In this episode, I talk about bias in the media and the ways in which it is amplified and spread across the internet. I discuss the role played by domestic media outlets and political operatives, and how they amplify stories to make them seem more important than they actually are.

00:00:00.000 when people write and talk about misinformation and interference in elections particularly coming
00:00:15.240 from foreign sources they mean not just creating fake news although that's a part of it they also
00:00:21.120 mean amplification stories that are amplified over others to make those stories seem more
00:00:26.880 important that's a concern coming from russian bots from bots within china and also you saw that in the
00:00:33.020 conversation about the u.s presidential election and whether or not there were several hundred bots
00:00:37.440 that were amplifying promoting this or that story or this or that political campaign rally well you
00:00:43.160 know it's funny because i think we shouldn't just talk about amplification of news coming from foreign
00:00:47.720 sources but let's talk about amplification here in canada within our own soil coming from our own
00:00:55.080 media and from our own political operatives and what that tells us about well not about foreign
00:00:59.960 interference because it ain't foreign but about bias writing in my recent column in the sun post
00:01:05.740 media papers i say my media colleagues better get their anti-shear bias in check pronto and i'm not
00:01:11.640 faulting people for creating fake news although sometimes there are of course stories that we
00:01:16.020 doubt the authenticity of them but more about what is promoted what is amplified and what is not so
00:01:22.620 for instance we have the story about andrew sheer and his 14 year old video making remarks about
00:01:27.900 same-sex marriage why he would not support them now this was amplified massively it became the story
00:01:34.480 that we all must read the story that everybody must have an opinion on it was rammed down people's
00:01:39.440 throats as the top issue of the day clearly various reporters they they told themselves somehow them
00:01:45.360 and their editors there was a mechanism within them the gears got going where they decided this
00:01:50.320 this is really where it's really at this is the big story of the day you gotta pause and go really
00:01:56.800 i mean i think that speaks to some sort of inherent bias i think that speaks to where your headspace is
00:02:02.340 at that you feel that that really is the top story of the day it all came out because ralph goodale
00:02:06.900 pushed a video showing andrew sheer making these remarks ralph goodale himself as we all know now
00:02:11.960 also voted against same-sex marriage now there are a whole lot of members of parliament and provincial and
00:02:18.780 local politicians who are posting a whole bunch of things to social media every single day
00:02:23.240 they're not all news so why is this news well because sources domestic sources in the canadian
00:02:31.060 media decided to amplify the stories and what's interesting is that there are some stories that
00:02:37.340 are amplified and other stories that are not for instance prime minister justin trudeau and the
00:02:42.300 liberals found themselves in a bit of a hot spot when benébreth canada posted a press release about
00:02:47.440 concerns about one liberal candidate who had said remarks that were characterized as anti-semitic now
00:02:53.320 he's the previous imam of a montreal mosque that was the victim of that tragic massacre a couple years
00:02:58.720 ago and he had risen to national prominence giving one of the speeches at the memorial i guess the
00:03:03.700 liberals thought hey we have a good candidate here we would like this imam to enter the liberal
00:03:08.260 caucus well benébreth canada comes out with this press release and then the liberals pretty quickly
00:03:13.680 dump him as a candidate after that and there's now debate raging as to whether or not the liberals
00:03:18.640 weren't sure about these remarks didn't really fully know about them they said they'd been doing
00:03:23.100 an investigation for a couple weeks or if they only dumped him because he was caught well he's now
00:03:28.960 done a press release and he has said that no the liberals knew and they were working with me on this
00:03:34.180 to sort of massage all of this and maybe explain what i was actually getting at and why it's misleading
00:03:39.240 and why it's not actually anti-semitic and so forth and we're going to deal with all of this
00:03:43.400 okay that's very interesting and i'm not commenting on those particulars maybe we'll learn more a bit
00:03:48.240 about them but that story was not particularly amplified i mean is it sort of being basically
00:03:53.780 reported on yes and the major news outlets are acknowledging hey here's a candidate they had
00:03:58.020 questions about him he was dumped the story kind of went dormant for a couple days he had the press
00:04:02.560 release the press conference that press conference will be sort of basically reported on so the
00:04:07.480 rudimentary work will be done but hands down i guarantee you it is not going to be the amplified
00:04:12.980 story the story that we all must discuss it's rammed down our throats as the top issue of the day that
00:04:18.540 you all must have an opinion on and justin chudeau is going to be hounded and dogged at every event
00:04:22.900 make comments on this like andrew sheer was about his 14 year old video so i say all this because it
00:04:29.160 makes me chuckle when i hear concerns about certain foreign interference because of course the main
00:04:33.660 the main concerns are the amplification of stories that work one way or the other and it is a concern
00:04:38.420 and of course we don't want that we don't want a whole bunch of russian bots pushing anything for
00:04:43.600 or against justin chudeau or andrew sheer because hey it's not their country it's our democracy
00:04:47.820 we kind of got a chuckle that the same stuff that we hear about a fear-mongering happening
00:04:52.020 from foreign sources it's kind of already happening here in our domestic sphere
00:04:57.860 with many of our mainstream voices
00:05:00.080 with all the other places
00:05:04.160 do you
00:05:06.160 you
00:05:06.220 you
00:05:08.160 do you
00:05:17.600 you
00:05:19.660 you
00:05:20.180 you
00:05:26.020 you
