00:00:00.000 Is Canada a racist country? A clear majority, two-thirds of the country, say no. That's pretty
00:00:06.180 remarkable given the constant, steady stream of Canada bashing we've heard from elites in
00:00:11.440 politics and the media. I'm Candice Malcolm and this is The Candice Malcolm Show.
00:00:20.120 Did you see this remarkable new study from the Angus Reid Institute? Angus Reid partnered with
00:00:26.000 the University of British Columbia for this comprehensive research series on racist
00:00:30.400 attitudes in Canada. You probably saw the legacy media headlines which stressed the negative. That
00:00:36.140 is, that one-third of the country thinks that Canada is racist. But that's sort of to be expected. After
00:00:41.480 all, almost every political leader in the country was bludgeoned and shamed into agreeing with the
00:00:46.640 weird notion that Canada is systemically racist. This all happened last summer after the very
00:00:51.580 public death of a Black man in Minneapolis. So this death had nothing to do with Canada. In fact,
00:00:57.800 when it comes to the history of Black people in our country, when it comes to ending slavery,
00:01:02.980 Canada was nearly a century ahead of the U.S. and the rest of the world in abolishing the slave trade
00:01:08.380 and abolishing slavery. It happened in 1793 when Upper Canada passed the Anti-Slavery Act,
00:01:14.460 outlawing slavery, and it wasn't until 1865 that the U.S. did the same. So why did nearly every
00:01:20.660 political figure in Canada use this sad death as the pretext to bash our country and claim that
00:01:27.620 Canada is irredeemably racist? It's a very difficult thing for people within positions of authority,
00:01:34.360 within systems, to recognize. It's difficult for me, as a prime minister, to recognize that the
00:01:41.420 government of Canada is regularly guilty of systemic discrimination. There is incredible pain
00:01:49.040 across this country about the systemic racism that continues to exist in policing.
00:01:55.000 I think that they don't have to look any further than Indigenous populations to understand that
00:02:01.640 racism does exist in Canada. I say Canada, Ontario, this very house that we stand in here today
00:02:09.260 is built upon systemic racism. Of course there's systemic racism in Ontario. There's systemic racism
00:02:16.800 across this country. It's important and it's hard to acknowledge that there is systemic racism in our
00:02:25.080 country. But we also acknowledge that there is institutional racism, that there is systemic racism.
00:02:30.440 Is our government racist?
00:02:37.760 Yes. Well, it was thanks to a very sophisticated political campaign that this isolated incidence of
00:02:44.600 police brutality in the United States and dealing with George Floyd became the rallying cry to push
00:02:49.680 the woke ideology into every aspect of our society. So in case you don't know what the woke ideology is,
00:02:56.200 the simplistic narrative goes something like this. Western culture is nothing but a hierarchy of power,
00:03:02.480 where everybody falls into one of two categories. You're either an oppressor or you're oppressed.
00:03:08.000 All individuals are reduced down to a few biological traits, namely your skin color,
00:03:12.760 your gender, and your sexual orientation. So straight white males are always the oppressors,
00:03:17.880 they're always at fault, and everyone else falls into one of the other categories unless they are
00:03:23.400 pitted against someone who's even more oppressed. So women are oppressed unless they are white and
00:03:29.160 they're in the presence of a non-white man. In that instance, it flips and the white woman becomes the
00:03:34.000 oppressor. But if a non-white man is in the presence of a non-white woman, well then he becomes the oppressor.
00:03:40.100 That is, unless the non-white woman is a police officer, in which case then she is the oppressor.
00:03:46.900 Ironically, they've developed their own hierarchy where people move up and down the chain of
00:03:51.080 oppression depending on the whims of the Twitter mob. This is also the basis of the legal academic
00:03:57.300 concept of critical race theory, which was developed in the early 1970s, mostly by Harvard law professor
00:04:03.380 Derrick Bell. So in a nutshell, critical race theory argues that the legacy of white supremacy remains
00:04:10.180 embedded in modern-day society through our laws and our institutions that were fundamental in shaping
00:04:15.380 our society. So this theory rejects the idea that laws are inherently neutral, even though they are
00:04:21.140 sometimes applied unevenly. Instead, they argue that the laws themselves are racist, even if the law has
00:04:26.980 nothing to do with race. The theory ignores any progress that we've made over the last 200 years,
00:04:32.180 it ignores changes made in the law, it ignores programs introduced to address past wrongs,
00:04:37.540 and it ignores drastically different societal attitudes that exist today. It ignores the rest of
00:04:43.060 the world as well, and it ignores how North America is still the most tolerant, open, free, and equal society
00:04:49.700 in the world. Instead, it has a singular focus on racism, and the vagueness of this accusation is sort
00:04:56.340 of the brilliance of critical race theory and the woke ideology. Rather than pointing to individual
00:05:01.860 instances of racism, a racist person, a racist law, racist beliefs, any of those we would all join together
00:05:08.180 to condemn and try to change, but instead they say that the racism is hidden and so we can't see it and
00:05:14.660 we can't acknowledge it. It's just out there, forming the basis of every law and every institution
00:05:20.340 in our society. And so the only way to rid our society of this hidden racism is to dismantle the
00:05:26.980 rule of law, dismantle our laws, dismantle our institutions, and replace them with a new and
00:05:32.580 untested system that would promote equity. Equity, not equality. So we're not talking about equality of
00:05:38.500 opportunity, which is more or less what we already have. Equity means giving more to people of less,
00:05:44.660 and giving less to people who have more in order to achieve equality of outcome. And here is where
00:05:50.740 the modern woke left realigns with its Marxist roots. They fundamentally have the same goal,
00:05:56.260 equality of outcome. They want to tear apart Western liberal democracy and replace free markets
00:06:01.700 and individual liberty with some new communist utopia. The woke worldview has seeped into every aspect
00:06:09.060 of our lives in the past 12 months. We hear about it from politicians, from the media,
00:06:13.780 from Silicon Valley, Hollywood actors, musicians, and the broader corporate world. It's all over our
00:06:19.780 schools, all over universities. Wherever you look, you will find this theory. They've all gone woke,
00:06:25.860 and they all want you to believe that we live in a racist society. They tell us that every day.
00:06:31.460 Here in Canada, for the past month or so, we've heard nothing but how racist and awful our country
00:06:37.140 is. Now, none of this is to say that there aren't racist people in Canada. There are. There are racist
00:06:43.140 Canadians. Canadians, after all, are human beings. Human beings are flawed, and there are people who hold
00:06:49.780 bigoted and hateful views. But the important thing is, Canadians, by and large, condemn their actions
00:06:56.580 and their beliefs. Racists in this country are few and far between. They're not part of the mainstream,
00:07:01.860 and they don't represent the country as a whole. I'll read you the preamble of this Angus Reid report
00:07:07.380 to give you a little taste of it. So it says, these are times of deep reckoning over issues of race and
00:07:13.940 identity, hatred, and violence in Canada. Against the backdrop of the London, Ontario attack that
00:07:19.460 targeted and killed the Muslim family, the deep pain associated with revelations about the hundreds
00:07:24.900 of children buried on the grounds of former residential schools, and ongoing reports of
00:07:30.420 discrimination against Canadians of Asian origin. Many are attempting to reconcile the realities of the
00:07:36.820 nation's attitudes towards diversity and equality with national mythologizing about multiculturalism.
00:07:44.100 So it is against this backdrop, the death of George Floyd, Black Lives Matter, critical race theory,
00:07:49.620 the Tukumloop's chief alleging the discovery of children's remains, an alleged terrorist attack
00:07:54.500 against a Muslim family, and politicians like Prime Minister Justin Trudeau equating criticism of the
00:08:00.340 communist regime in China to anti-Asian racism. It's against the backdrop of all of this that this
00:08:06.580 Angus Reid poll was done. And sure, it's sort of disheartening that 34% believe that Canada is a racist
00:08:12.740 country. But those are the same 34% who support the NDP and the Green Party, and it constitutes a
00:08:18.420 majority of young women under the age of 34. But another way to think about it is that only 34% of
00:08:25.060 the country has bought into this new woke political narrative, despite propaganda coming from every
00:08:31.540 corner of our society. I personally think that's good news. A clear majority doesn't care what the fancy
00:08:38.100 people in politics and on the CBC have to say. A clear majority of Canadians reject the idea that
00:08:44.740 Canada is a racist country. Thank goodness for Canadian common sense. I'm Candice Malcolm,
00:08:50.580 and this is The Candice Malcolm Show.
