00:01:36.880 So yesterday, RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald spoke to reporters and he confirmed a whole bunch of facts,
00:01:44.060 some of which we knew and some of which we did not.
00:01:46.700 So let's go through everything we know and the timeline so far.
00:01:49.980 So the shooter's name, legal name, I guess, is Jesse Van Rootsler.
00:01:54.040 He is 18 years old or he was 18 years old.
00:01:56.600 He went socially by Jesse Strange.
00:01:59.020 That's what his family called him.
00:02:00.440 That's what all his online profiles called him.
00:02:02.560 But police are saying that his legal name is Jesse Van Rootsler, age 18.
00:02:07.420 There are eight confirmed victims, eight people who were killed by Jesse.
00:02:11.680 Plus, Jesse killed himself as well.
00:02:13.940 So nine dead total.
00:02:15.380 We reported yesterday that it was 10.
00:02:17.060 That was based on a mistake that the RCMP had made.
00:02:20.200 They had assumed that someone who had died en route to the hospital.
00:02:23.860 But that person actually survived.
00:02:25.200 And we're going to bring you an update on her a little later in the show.

00:02:29.540 Roughly 1 p.m. local time on Tuesday.
00:02:32.640 Jesse Strange, aka Jesse Van Rootsler, age 18, was in his home.
00:02:37.800 He murdered his mother, Jennifer Strange, age 39, killed her in cold blood, killed his 11-year-old brother.
00:02:44.540 11-year-old brother, also dead, stepbrother, sorry, killed at the residence.
00:02:48.840 Jesse then went on over to the local high school.
00:02:51.420 This is Tumblr Ridge Secondary School.
00:02:53.660 It's a school that has grade 7 through grade 12.
00:02:57.420 There were roughly 175 students enrolled at this school in the very remote community of Tumblr Ridge.
00:03:03.960 This is a town of some 2,400 people.
00:03:06.260 So you got to know everybody knows each other.
00:03:08.100 And everybody knew who this guy, Jesse Strange, was.
00:03:12.360 Well, he carried out an unbelievable, disturbing rampage at the school.
00:03:16.420 I can't imagine the horror of those poor students.
00:03:18.920 Jesse killed one female teacher.
00:03:21.000 He also killed three female students and two male students.
00:03:24.980 Police say that they were primarily between ages of 13 and 17, although two of the victims,

00:04:10.760 She was flown to Vancouver, remains in critical condition.
00:04:14.520 Her mom posted last night that they didn't think she was going to survive the night.

00:04:29.260 So interestingly, the police say that Jesse was previously enrolled at this school.
00:04:33.760 He was a student, but he dropped out four years ago.

00:04:40.960 What has he been doing for the last four years before he went back and carried out this rampage?
00:04:46.900 Well, RCMP Commissioner Dwayne McDonald also confirmed that the family were gun owners.
00:04:52.020 He would not confirm which guns were used.
00:04:53.980 But let me just read from a Globe and Mail report.
00:04:56.380 It says the RCMP said the shooter once had a firearm license, but that it expired in 2024.

00:05:03.800 Okay, we know this person is mentally ill.
00:05:06.020 We know that this person is trans.
00:05:07.780 Why does he have a gun license?
00:05:09.740 And why does he, you know, he's not even in school.
00:05:11.780 The guy's not in school, but he has a gun license.

00:05:15.760 Police say that no guns were registered.
00:05:18.140 This is, okay, this is just a pause here.

00:05:22.440 This is how the Globe and Mail, this is how Canada's newspaper of record is reporting the story, pretending that the shooter was a girl and using her pronouns, even though it was a dude.

00:05:39.680 So anyway, we're reading from the Globe and Mail, no guns were registered to his name.
00:05:44.400 And the Mounties said that they do not yet know who on the guns used Tuesday or how they were procured.
00:05:49.020 Police had seized firearms from the home a couple of years ago, RCMP said.
00:05:53.060 But someone in the family successfully petitioned for their return.
00:05:56.580 The guns were given back roughly a month ago, a family member said.
00:06:00.360 So the RCMP knew that there was a problem here.
00:06:02.460 They knew this person shouldn't have guns.
00:06:03.960 They took those guns away.
00:06:05.740 And then a month ago, they gave them back.
00:06:07.520 They gave them back to this family and to this deranged, sick, young man.

00:06:15.820 RCMP confirmed that Jesse was struggling with severe mental illness and that there were multiple home visits, including as recently as last spring.
00:06:25.360 Juno News has exclusively uncovered online accounts suggesting that Jesse had severe mental health issues since at least 2023.
00:06:32.680 And he even reported wanting to burn down his own house at the time.
00:06:37.520 Here is RCMP Commissioner, Dwayne MacDonald, speaking about Jesse's mental illness.
00:06:43.100 Were there any calls, concerns by anyone in the public to police about the suspect in recent days, weeks, months?

00:06:56.540 So we've checked our police indices or databases, et cetera.

00:07:14.780 And yes, RCMP also confirmed that Jesse was trans, he considered himself a woman, even though he was a man, and that he started transing at the age of 12.

00:07:34.180 The police said they didn't want to reveal that the gunman was trans because the gunman identified as a woman.

00:07:49.680 So a reporter did ask RCMP on Wednesday why they were hiding the fact that the mass shooter was trans.
00:07:54.700 Again, here is Deputy Commissioner Dwayne MacDonald stating that he wanted to use the killer's preferred pronouns, actually, that it was really important to them not to misgender this maniacal monster who was gunning people down at the local high school.

00:09:32.880 So I guess they came around and did the right thing eventually because I'm sure they would have preferred that you just never knew that fact, that you never knew that it was trans and they're just going to pretend it was a female shooter.

00:10:53.880 Our managing editor, Cosman Georgia, spoke to a family member, confirmed the name Jesse Strange, confirmed that the guy was a shooter and that he was transgender.

00:11:37.840 And initially, when the active shooter alert went out, police said that they were looking for a female with brown hair wearing a dress.
00:11:46.340 But we have not heard anything more from police about a possible suspect.

00:11:56.560 Someone's shooting children at a local school, but heaven forbid we misgender them, Cosman.
00:12:02.020 I mean, like this is this is the world we live in, I guess, where we care more about the feelings of a shooter, a maniacal maniac murdering people than we do about the truth.

00:17:02.620 And for no reason, other than the fact that Jamil is out there having an impact, doing amazing things, using his own personal connections to the White House to try to advocate for Canadians and get a better deal.
