Candace Malcolm here with True North. Now, Canadians could be forgiven for
1.00
00:00:15.300
believing that the crisis of illegal border crossers and asylum seekers has
00:00:20.680
simply gone away. I mean, after all, the media hardly cover the issue anymore and
00:00:25.980
when the few politicians who are brave enough to bring up the issue, try to
00:00:31.680
talk about it, we actually have media fact-checking them and complaining about
00:00:37.320
their language using the politically correct Trudeau-approved talking points.
00:00:42.480
What I don't want, I don't want our RCMP officers to welcome them. They are illegal
00:00:49.260
migrants and so we must be sure that if they want to come to our country, they
1.00
00:00:54.480
have to follow our immigration law and that's very important for us.
00:00:58.860
I think the correct term is irregular migrants, is it not?
1.00
00:01:02.940
The reality is that the number of people coming into Canada illegally and making
0.99
00:01:08.640
asylum claims has shown no signs of slowing down. Now, if we go back to 2017, there was
0.97
00:01:16.260
plenty of media coverage about this issue. It was all over the news from the CBC to
00:01:22.620
the Toronto Star. Everyone, even left-wing journalists in downtown Toronto and
00:01:27.620
Montreal, were covering the issue. Now, part of that was because they tried to
00:01:32.160
create a fake news narrative claiming that somehow Donald Trump was responsible for
00:01:37.620
the huge surge in illegal border crossings into Canada. That, of course, wasn't true.
00:01:43.200
The reason for the flood of migrants crossing the border illegally there was
00:01:48.840
because of Justin Trudeau, because of his virtue signaling on the world stage, inviting the
00:01:53.880
world via Twitter to come to Canada, and because his government made critical changes to our
00:02:00.280
refugee and asylum program, allowing virtually anyone to come to Canada and claim asylum.
00:02:06.760
He removed all kinds of restrictions that had been brought in by the previous Conservative government.
00:02:12.440
Now, it's the middle of the summer, it's slow news days, but I was looking up the data at Immigration
00:02:19.960
Canada and the CBSA, and I found that the numbers, it's surprising, the numbers have shown no signs of
00:02:27.080
slowing down. So, from January until June of 2019, the number of asylum claims that have been made in
00:02:33.800
Canada has been 26,860. That's actually on track to be higher than the number of total asylum claims
00:02:42.520
in 2017, and we're going to give 2018 a run for its money. So, last year, 2018, from January to December,
00:02:51.400
there were 55,035 asylum claims. Now, interestingly, last year, from January to June, the tally after half
00:03:00.280
the year, it was only 25,000. So, we're actually on track, potentially, to have more asylum claims
00:03:06.200
this year, 2019, than last year. Go back to 2017, the year that we did get plenty of media attention
00:03:12.520
on this topic, 2017, there were a total of 50,390 asylum claims made, and from January to June,
00:03:20.280
there had only been 18,445. So, those are the numbers. We're at 26,860 already after just six months
00:03:29.320
of tally there by the Canadian government. And yet, despite this ongoing surge, there just really
00:03:36.360
isn't a lot of discussion about it. You could almost assume that the Trudeau government had
00:03:41.400
somehow solved the problem that it had gone away. So, there are still a large number of people coming
00:03:47.080
into Canada illegally. They're either coming illegally across Roxham Road and illegal border crossings
00:03:53.720
across rural Quebec, Manitoba, British Columbia, or they're flying to Canada under false pretexts.
00:04:00.920
They're coming with tourist visas, or they're coming with falsified documents and passports,
00:04:06.440
landing at major airports in Canada, only to turn themselves in essentially, claim asylum, say to the
00:04:13.800
Canadian government, I'm a refugee, and the Canadian government by law has to hear their cases. So,
00:04:19.720
the problem is not going away. It's only growing. It's only getting worse. Canadians deserve to know
00:04:25.400
about this. And unfortunately, our media are just so in the bag for the Trudeau government and the
00:04:30.920
Trudeau liberals, they don't want to discuss the issue. They all want a piece of that pie of that
00:04:35.960
of that government bailout money that goes to journalists in Canadian media who use Trudeau
00:04:41.720
government-approved talking points, especially after the passing of the UN Global Compact on Migration,
00:04:47.720
which specifically said that governments were only going to support approved journalists and approved
00:04:53.560
media who use the correct language and the correct talking points when it comes to talking about
00:04:59.080
migration. Well, the reality is that there is still an illegal immigration problem in Canada. There are
00:05:05.000
huge numbers of people coming to our country illegally, and we don't know who they are. We haven't properly
1.00
00:05:10.840
screened them. We don't know. We don't even know always what nationality they are. Where are they coming
0.74
00:05:15.240
from? We rely entirely on their own accounts, their own stories. Well, folks, we know we shouldn't be
00:05:21.400
naive. We know the truth is that many people fabricate their past. Many people lie on their
00:05:25.640
applications. Many people will cheat and take advantage of any loophole possible to have a chance
00:05:31.080
to live in Canada. And that's not right. We have the rule of law in this country. We have a set of
00:05:35.480
immigration laws, and we should demand that our government follow these laws, that people follow these
00:05:41.320
laws when they come to Canada. So I would like to hear a lot more reporting on this issue. It's
00:05:46.200
incredibly important. For True North, I'm Candice Malcolm.
