00:00:54.660 national defense committee meeting how true north and our friends at rebel news
00:00:59.360 could be defeated how do we do that she asked they're making videos they're

00:01:58.780 rodney clifton a professor at the university of manitoba
00:02:01.560 and a senior fellow at the frontier center for public policy the subject of the
00:02:06.020 interview was on the censorship of the residential school debate more
00:02:09.660 specifically about the calls to criminalize to amend the criminal code to
00:02:14.580 make it illegal to commit so-called residential school denialism the
00:02:19.660 interview at the time didn't receive much attention it wasn't one of our most
00:02:22.980 watched interviews it kind of flew under the radar but several weeks later
00:02:26.540 after some left-wing activists who pretend to be journalists picked up on this
00:02:31.140 interview and made a big issue of this we received an email from spotify telling
00:02:35.980 us that this interview was deleted from the platform because it promoted hate
00:02:40.640 speech the irony of course was lost on the left-wing activists who demanded this
00:02:44.880 interview to be censored despite the subject of the interview being this exact
00:02:48.680 issue right that the entire interview was about how it will be illegal you talk
00:02:53.020 about not only the fact that there have been no bodies no remains found at the
00:02:58.620 sites of former indian residential schools but also to repeat the claims of
00:03:03.140 former students themselves that there were in fact good things that happened at
00:03:06.740 these schools my guest on the show rodney clifton is not just a professor and
00:03:12.860 not just a senior fellow at a think tank he worked at and lived at an indian
00:03:18.900 residential school in the 70s he married his wife who attended the
00:03:24.420 residential school system and so you could say that unlike most of the people
00:03:28.540 who talk about this issue today rodney clifton actually knows what went on he
00:03:33.420 has his own eyewitness accounts of the indian residential school system and by
00:03:38.760 presenting those accounts by presenting his side of the story it is now
00:03:42.840 considered hate speech in 2022 as you will remember several first nations across
00:03:47.920 the country made claims that they had found remains of children buried in mass
00:03:52.540 graves at the sites of former indian residential schools to date not a
00:03:56.440 single bone not a single grave has been reported at these supposed mass graves
00:04:01.240 and furthermore the first nations who made those initial claims have since
00:04:05.800 revised their wording to make it clear that they haven't found anything that
00:04:09.640 ground penetrating radar has only found anomalies in the ground however
00:04:13.540 despite the fact that no remains have yet to be found to back up the absurd
00:04:18.400 claims of mass graves at indian residential schools last year the
00:04:23.020 federal government appointed independent special interlocutor on
00:04:26.620 missing children and burial sites kimberly murray recommended to the federal
00:04:31.840 government to criminalize residential school denialism urgent
00:04:37.000 consideration should be given to legal mechanisms to address denialism including
00:04:42.400 the implementation of both civil and criminal sanctions this would include
00:04:47.740 making it illegal to say that residential schools didn't exist which I don't think
00:04:52.120 anybody actually claims but it would also lump in with that statement that there
00:04:58.540 were good things that happened at these schools and that there weren't any
00:05:02.020 remains found in these supposed mass graves so the federal government
00:05:06.880 appointed representative on this issue proposed to make it illegal to say the
00:05:12.400 truth which is that there have been no remains found in the ground and that there
00:05:18.460 have been several accounts of former students at residential schools who have
00:05:22.540 very positive things to say about the residential school system this is not
00:05:26.800 whitewashing the problems at these schools this is not denying that nothing bad happened
00:05:31.660 at these schools quite the opposite actually the residential school system is a scar on the
00:05:36.640 history of Canada the abuse that many students went through is abhorrent and
00:05:41.560 terrible and cannot be justified in any way but that does not mean that we can't
00:05:46.120 say as well that there were good things that happened at these schools it's not me
00:05:50.200 saying that I didn't go to those schools obviously it's the actual students
00:05:54.020 themselves so that was the subject of the interview that it would be deeply
00:05:57.520 dangerous for the federal government to criminalize the truth and that
00:06:02.120 interview has now been deleted on Spotify it is however up in its
00:06:06.520 entirety on X it is still up on rumble and YouTube so in a way all of this kind
00:06:12.880 of promoted our interview and now more people are gonna see it and maybe have a
00:06:16.780 different opinion on what's going on here some of these positive accounts come
00:06:21.280 from one of Canada's most famous indigenous people Thompson highway the
00:06:25.400 novelist musician and playwright Thompson highway famously said of his time at the
00:06:30.980 residential school system that it was nine of the happiest years of his life as he says
00:06:35.380 there are many successful people today that went to those schools and have
00:06:39.820 brilliant careers and are very functional people very happy people like myself I
00:06:43.840 have a thriving international career and it wouldn't have happened without that
00:06:47.440 school he's talking about the residential school system and it wasn't just
00:06:50.440 Thompson highway who was said positive things about the Indian residential
00:06:53.620 school system pointing out only one person's experience would be cherry-picking I
00:06:58.720 also want to highlight the comments of former Dene Inuvik chief CC Hodgson
00:07:03.940 Macaulay Hodgson Macaulay also described the residential school system as some of the
00:07:10.420 best years of her life as the first female chief of one of the 23 bands in the
00:07:15.100 Northwest Territories her opinion is kind of important on this issue at least I
00:07:19.660 would think so she says many former students were coming forward with their good and
00:07:24.340 positive side of the residential school experiences and they are planning to
00:07:28.360 start a committee of elders to make public the positive side of the
00:07:31.540 residential school system they all agree that Canadians must be made aware of the
00:07:35.380 positive stories that in fact was a letter to Senator Lynn Bayek when she was
00:07:40.900 eventually kicked out of the Senate for talking about the other side of the
00:07:45.160 residential school story in fact in the TRC Commission report several positive
00:07:50.620 stories about the residential school system were written down and put into
00:07:54.640 that report meaning that if the government gets their way in
00:07:58.420 criminalizing so-called denialism well then part of the stories written in the
00:08:03.580 TRC Commission report will be made illegal as Kimberly Murray herself said last
00:08:08.620 year about what I have just committed the terrible act of residential school
00:08:14.020 denialism she says that it is harmful and violence and calculated these were her
00:08:19.480 words last year many international experts point out that denialism is the
00:08:24.340 last step in genocide deny that it happens denialism is violence denialism is
00:08:32.620 calculated denialism is harmful and denialism is hate and it was previous
00:08:40.000 Attorney General David Lametti who said he was open to amending the criminal code to
00:08:44.660 add denialism to a list of offenses I know that that Kimberly Murray has begun to
00:08:50.840 address this in her in her interim report and I know that my colleague Mark Mark
00:08:55.760 Miller has responded to MP Leah Gazan in the House of Commons when she asked the
00:09:00.200 question I have had it raised to me personally I'm open I'm open to all I'm
00:09:07.640 open to all possibilities here including a legal including a legal solution and
00:09:12.740 outlawing it another act of denialism would be to say that there were no
00:09:16.760 murders of indigenous children at residential schools of which there is
00:09:20.980 no evidence to back that up there is no evidence to say that any student at a
00:09:24.440 residential school was murdered despite what many people have tried to tell us
00:09:29.000 certainly many students did die there were diseases at these schools but there
00:09:33.740 was not a single piece of evidence to back up that any murders of students took
00:09:38.420 place and yet we are told to accept that this residential school system was a
00:09:44.480 genocide in our country in fact it was NDP member of Parliament Leah Gazan who got
00:09:50.420 the entire House of Commons to unanimously agree that the residential school system
00:09:54.980 was a genocide in the last session I put forward a unanimous consent motion
00:09:59.900 recognizing what happened in residential schools as an act of genocide I was
00:10:05.180 shocked when members of this House chose not to support my motion confirming that
00:10:10.040 residential school denial is still a reality we need to do better we need to
00:10:16.520 find a way forward that honors the truth about what happened in this country
00:10:20.420 especially in light of Pope Francis's acknowledgement that what took place in
00:10:24.980 residential schools was in fact genocide speaking of the NDP after Spotify
