Summary

The federal government may have eased the carbon tax regulations, but don't be deceived, this is still a carbon tax and it's still just as bad. This is an example of the media not picking up on what actually happened here. Back in January, Catherine McKenna, the Environment Minister, set the benchmark at 70%, meaning that the federal government would be put on any company whose emissions were more than 70% of their industry s average emissions. Now, she's changed it to 80%, or for some industries 90%, but I want to make very clear about this: the percentage is based on the average emissions for the industry, which means that the average, as in where most people are concerned, is still going to be penalized.

00:00:00.000 The federal government may have eased the carbon tax regulations, but don't be
00:00:05.200 deceived, this is still a carbon tax and it's still just as bad. This is an
00:00:09.320 example of the media not really picking up on what actually happened here. Back
00:00:13.880 in January, Catherine McKenna, the Environment Minister, set the benchmark
00:00:17.660 at 70%, meaning that the carbon tax imposed by the federal government would
00:00:22.260 be put on any company whose emissions were more than 70% of their industry's
00:00:27.660 average emissions. Now what she's done is changed it to 80% or for some industries
00:00:33.140 90%, but I want to make very clear about this. The percentage is based on the
00:00:38.900 average emissions for the industry, which means that the average, as in where most
00:00:43.520 of the people are really in and around as far as companies are concerned, is still
00:00:47.740 going to be penalized. So when the benchmark is now set at 80%, that means
00:00:52.260 that if you are the average industry, your emissions are on par with any other
00:00:56.720 company in that sector, you are going to be dinged. You are going to have to pay
00:01:00.560 this carbon tax. And that's why Scott Moe, the Premier of Saskatchewan, who is
00:01:04.820 fighting the federal government on this carbon tax, has said that even with this
00:01:08.900 change it is still, in his words, economic poison. You cannot put lipstick on a pig
00:01:14.840 and expect that it's going to be something other. And the same is true with
00:01:18.100 this easing, allegedly, of the federal carbon tax. For the True North Initiative,
00:01:21.940 I'm Andrew Lutton.
