00:00:00.000 While he should have been honouring the victims of the Polytechnique Massacre in Montreal,
00:00:05.160 Justin Trudeau decided he would take the opportunity on a Montreal radio station to talk about gun control.
00:00:10.940 Specifically, not ruling out a full ban on handguns and assault weapons.
00:00:15.700 Though Toronto Star reports, quoting an anonymous government official,
00:00:19.420 says that a full handgun ban and buyback is not on the table at this point.
00:00:24.840 Trudeau did say that there are some measures to restrict access to assault weapons and handguns.
00:00:30.820 One of them is forcing law-abiding, licensed, permitted gun owners to keep their guns in a storage locker at a gun range
00:00:38.820 instead of actually having them at home,
00:00:41.260 which is keeping them in accordance with very strict and very stringently regulated guidelines.
00:00:48.040 And the one element of this, though, that the media refuses to cover
00:00:51.580 is that when Trudeau talks about needing to get assault weapons out of people's hands,
00:00:56.440 well, they're already illegal.
00:00:59.220 Assault weapons, firearms that have the capacity to shoot fully automatically,
00:01:03.080 are already illegal in Canada.
00:01:05.800 When Justin Trudeau and the left say assault weapons,
00:01:08.740 what they are actually referring to are guns that look scary.
00:01:13.060 Guns like the AR-15, which, while it may be a gun that looks like a military rifle,
00:01:17.900 it's actually designed solely for civilians and shoots semi-automatic,
00:01:22.440 the same as most hunting rifles.
00:01:24.560 Except this one, because of its appearance, is restricted.
00:01:28.080 Take a look at another gun, the Mini-14,
00:01:30.400 which can be made to look, again, like a scary black rifle.
00:01:34.360 The Mini-14 is a non-restricted gun.
00:01:38.040 And the bitter irony of this is that a Mini-14
00:01:40.180 was the gun used by Gamil Garbi in the L'Ecole Polytechnique shooting.
00:01:45.760 It's a non-restricted firearm, used routinely for hunting.
00:01:49.200 Would not be further restricted under any of the gun bans
00:01:52.880 that have been proposed by the Liberals
00:01:55.100 or any of the other gun control activists.
00:01:57.660 So once again, we have Justin Trudeau taking advantage of the theatrics
00:02:01.480 of gun control to give Canadians the illusion
00:02:04.440 that he's doing something and using the cover of tragedy to do it.
00:02:09.040 Let me tell you why this idea of forcing people
00:02:11.480 to store their guns at a gun range is a terrible idea.
00:02:14.940 Number one, there are people that own restricted firearms
00:02:17.840 with collector's permits that don't intend to shoot them at a gun range.
00:02:22.180 And all of a sudden, for them to have a collection
00:02:24.640 that they aren't allowed to collect wouldn't make sense.
00:02:28.320 Number two, the people that have the restricted firearms licenses,
00:02:32.440 the RPAL, or Restricted Possession and Acquisition License,
00:02:36.080 who have that license and need that license
00:02:38.660 to own handguns or guns like the AR-15,
00:02:41.960 have gone through very strict and rigorous vetting and screening,
00:02:46.540 which involves daily police background checks
00:02:49.200 to make sure they haven't tripped any police radars across the country.
00:02:52.780 These people are not the ones that are actually using their gun for harm.
00:02:57.040 And it's a lot safer for a licensed and responsible gun owner
00:03:00.660 to have their gun stored and secured in their own home
00:03:03.740 than to have it stored off-site,
00:03:05.740 where they might not be checking up on it.
00:03:07.880 They won't have the ability to see if someone is breaking into, perhaps, steel.
00:03:12.560 These are all possibilities.
00:03:14.140 If you have forced gun ranges to be,
00:03:16.400 by fiat of the state, gun storage facilities,
00:03:19.960 you're eliminating the number one thing that gun owners do 1.00
00:03:22.880 to protect their property,
00:03:24.040 which is constantly supervise their own storage systems.
00:03:27.820 Which, by the way, the police can check up on at any point without a warrant.
00:03:33.180 So when Justin Trudeau talks about restricting assault weapons,
00:03:36.120 he's lying to Canadians to pretend that they aren't already banned.
00:03:40.220 When Justin Trudeau talks about restricting access to handguns,
00:03:43.600 he is lying to Canadians by not telling them 0.99
00:03:46.120 how strictly regulated and controlled they already are.
00:03:49.960 And to use dead Canadians to make those points is despicable.
00:03:55.040 For the True North Initiative, I'm Andrew Lawton.
