00:01:50.220 shout out to to the fans because i checked our youtube we're almost at 30 000 followers that's
00:01:55.920 a big deal for us we haven't really been paying attention to the youtube it's kind of like uh
00:02:01.200 our second baby but i think that that's really cool this thing is growing i can't explain why
00:02:06.740 and i'm really grateful for that but without further ado we have a really fun guest today
00:02:11.340 uh alex soren alex what's up man we we've uh we had some words on twitter but now we're here
00:02:18.520 kind of face to face and i'm looking forward to the conversation and where it's going to go man
00:02:23.000 tell the people a little bit about yourself where they could find you and uh what you do yeah
00:02:28.100 likewise uh so my name is alex soren i'm an orthodox christian and a lawyer that's kind of
00:02:32.540 my spiel on youtube uh i converted to orthodoxy and adulthood like just under two years ago
00:02:38.940 prior to that, I spent a lot of time researching this thing. And I really, I approached it the
00:02:43.640 same way I would approach like any of my other case files, like really just going through case
00:02:47.620 history and trying to determine like, okay, what happened? Like, what are the facts? And like,
00:02:51.360 what does the Bible say about what the church is supposed to be? So I think that ties in well to
00:02:55.620 our discussion today on what the true church is. And you can find me on YouTube. I see you have my
00:03:00.340 YouTube channel up, just Alex Soren on YouTube or on X or on Instagram. You'll find me at any of
00:03:05.320 those places but i'm most active on youtube and x so just alex soren i should be one of the first
00:03:11.160 few that pop up it's not a very common name so excellent excellent well again thanks for joining
00:03:16.560 me and uh yeah so we had a little bit of a back and forth i was rude uh but you're dealing with
00:03:24.040 you're dealing with mr nasty so you know i did also call you a demoniac at one point so i mean
00:03:28.560 yeah it's and that's nothing new uh you know a lot of people a lot of people have called us that
00:03:33.980 and uh i don't know i guess like time bears time time will pass and then the fruits of that
00:03:40.980 insult will will bear out so one of our most recent people that called us a demoniac uh
00:03:47.420 timothy alberino or he called us what do we call us fake christians or something to this i think
00:03:51.800 you believe that we're fake christians too because of you know the orthodox church and their beliefs
00:03:56.220 but uh i don't know it turns out he goes on joe rogan he gets on the rogan show and doesn't even
00:04:00.440 talk about jesus so it's like it's a very interesting dynamic which was which was our
00:04:04.060 hold up with him but not here to talk about alberino we're here to talk about you and the
00:04:09.940 disagreement i guess you saw one of the maybe the memes that i posted i was kind of trashing on the
00:04:15.240 orthodox art right uh yes and i think just generally also there was some posts you made
00:04:20.960 about uh you thought the orthodox church was anti-christ that there's no salvation in the
00:04:26.360 church i mean prior to our interaction there were just a few tweets that you had up on that
00:04:29.960 But yeah, it got my attention because, you know, usually it's like, oh, if anybody's talking, you know, kind of trash about the Orthodox Church, it's like, oh, would you like to see if your claims stand up to scrutiny?
00:04:40.320 You know, would you like to have a dialogue or a debate or something?
00:04:43.380 So, yeah, you definitely got on my radar when you started posting that stuff.
00:04:47.620 Right, right.
00:04:47.980 So my claims, which, again, I don't it's an impossible thing to make. 0.83
00:04:53.020 It's almost a supernatural claim that salvation cannot be attained within the Orthodox Church. 0.70
00:04:58.020 Do I necessarily believe that? Not really. But the Orthodox Church does believe that, right?
00:05:07.540 Well, salvation in our theology has like many different senses, right? So we believe that you're saved in baptism through the remission of sins and being grafted into God's covenant people.
00:05:18.760 We think that you're saved through confession, by confessing your sins, and we think that, like, at the last day, when we stand in judgment in front of the great white throne, we have hope that we, too, will be saved, right? 0.99
00:05:30.700 So we say that salvation is found only in the Orthodox Church. 0.50
00:05:34.300 We're talking about, in the most immediate sense, that salvation and that transformation in your heart is found only in the Orthodox Church, right?
00:05:42.240 Now, does that mean that the Holy Spirit is not working outside the Church?
00:05:45.780 No.
00:05:46.060 If you look at Cornelius in the Bible, right, Cornelius, the centurion, he prayed to God, he offered alms up to God, and they were received by God.
00:05:55.200 But when he encountered Peter and he encountered the church, he recognized that it's God's church right away, and he joined it.
00:06:01.340 He didn't go and start his own church.
00:06:03.440 Well, that's something that I think we could talk about as well, because that's an interesting scripture where, I guess you're saying that the original church is based on Peter and the proclamation that Christ made to him at Mount Hermon.
00:06:13.660 uh yes and also john 20 and uh that's when jesus breathes on the apostles and he says
00:06:23.320 whoever sins you forgive are forgiven whoever sins you retain are retained uh and also there's
00:06:28.700 a whole cultural milieu about that binding and loosing language in matthew 16 and in matthew
00:06:34.080 18 as well when jesus says that to all of the apostles okay which which specific scripture
00:06:39.820 i'd like to read them so on john 20 which one are you referring to i think it's like john 20
00:06:44.800 verses 20 to 21 okay yeah so we'll pull it up um and when he had when he had said this he showed
00:06:55.500 them both his hands and his side and the disciples rejoiced when they saw the lord so jesus said to
00:06:59.620 them peace be with you as the father has sent me i also send you up to 23 yeah okay yeah um and when
00:07:06.120 he said when he had said this he breathed on them and said to them receive the holy spirit
00:07:09.960 if you forgive the sins of any their sins have been forgiven them if you retain the sins of any
00:07:15.500 they have been retained uh okay yeah so that's an authority that christ is transmitting to the
00:07:22.920 apostles and if you look at another like the foundation of this this uh authority is promised
00:07:29.120 by jesus to the apostles you see in matthew 18 and i'll give you the verses here in a second
00:07:36.120 it's like verses 18 uh 18 to 20 okay so you can pull it i can read it i guess for the sake of
00:07:43.960 time and you can pull it up yeah sure says i tell you the truth whatever you bind on earth will have
00:07:48.580 been bound in heaven whatever you release on earth will have been released in heaven again i tell you
00:07:52.860 the truth if two of you agree on earth about whatever you ask my father in heaven will do it
00:07:56.820 for you for where two or three are assembled in my name i am there among them right when jesus is
00:08:02.140 saying this he is speaking to the 12 he's speaking to his disciples so this is the promise of
00:08:07.260 authority this binding and loosing authority and he follows through on it you see it in matthew's
00:08:12.680 mission yeah you guys are thinking that like where two or three are gathered in his name
00:08:17.760 you're saying only two of three of the 12 or the 11 at the time i suppose uh at this time it was
00:08:23.280 the 12 you know but then of course judas you know unalives himself and then he's replaced by
00:08:28.380 matthias but we believe this authority is also passed down through the laying on of hands to
00:08:32.900 the bishopric in the church today what is your definition of a saint i don't want i don't want
00:08:39.580 this to be a debate i'm just i'm really trying to like because there there are like weird
00:08:43.260 definitional terms that i'm i'm trying to parse out that you guys are using and that i feel like
00:08:48.760 I'm not having an understanding of. Saint, I think, is a super important term, because if you look at
00:08:54.540 the Greek, in the Greek Septuagint and in the New Testament, see that the way Paul uses that term is
00:09:00.460 to refer to, like, the holy ones, right? So in the Old Testament, I think in the Greek, it's agioi,
00:09:06.340 refers to these, like, spiritual beings that are usually on, like, God's divine counsel or something,
00:09:11.040 the holy ones of God. Sometimes that's used to refer to the Israelites as well, and Saint Paul
00:09:16.940 uses that same term for the people in the church in the new testament right so we'd say that like
00:09:21.560 everybody in god's covenant people are like a small s saint right now there are those among
00:09:27.040 us that have lived exceptional lives that we would say uh we are very confident right after
00:09:34.520 their due diligence and uh it's like looking through the life of the person that this person
00:09:39.240 expressed a holy life so then we canonize them and we honor them in a special way compared to
00:09:44.900 the other saints right and we believe that they partake in the first resurrection and that they're
00:09:49.600 sitting on god's divine counsel today so we can ask them for their intercessions okay so to my
00:09:55.380 understanding a saint is a a person that's set apart a believer in christ a living believer in
00:10:01.140 christ and that's the definition of it so there's a strange like when we're we're talking about
00:10:07.980 canonizing and praying to saints is that this is like a big hold up for me the dead is the dead
00:10:12.760 the living is the living and uh i don't know i also don't this got me in trouble
00:10:18.100 if you want to know what got me in trouble initially with the orthodox church once you're
00:10:23.340 a little you're a little low i just want to raise your volumes yep okay um what initially got me in
00:10:29.220 trouble with the orthodox church was actually a catholic meme which was strange uh it was a
00:10:34.180 catholic meme about intercessional prayer which way it goes it's like a square and so you can
00:10:38.600 pray to mary you can pray to the saints and then they can pray to god the father and then it says
00:10:42.120 you can also pray to god and i just said hey why not just pray to god and uh it it started an entire
00:10:49.400 thing where i was like okay i wasn't exactly sure what the orthodox church was about i was friends
00:10:55.360 with jay dyer he showed up he actually showed up that's an unfortunate was there sorry to hear that 0.81
00:11:01.200 no i mean i don't really give a shit but he showed up he showed up to our last well two events ago 0.91
00:11:06.180 he showed up and uh he was actually when he showed up he was sick but he did show up and 0.95
00:11:10.640 tried to perform i think he was going to do like a cringe core rap which is funny so uh yeah we
00:11:16.660 were friends with jay dyer um and uh we had like you know i'm friends with buck johnson as well
00:11:24.060 and other orthodox cath orthodox christians and when i asked them for explanations about orthodoxy
00:11:30.580 it always like was reserved because it's a strange it seems like it is a strange religion it seems
00:11:35.820 like you guys are holding back you're not necessarily telling a lot of the strange nuances
00:11:40.000 that might ask people well what's the difference between catholicism and the orthodox church because
00:11:45.720 it looks a lot the same to me but anyway the meme that got me in trouble was that and all i did was
00:11:50.800 ask a question and then uh all of orthodoxy jumps down my throat and i'm like well now i'm now i'm
00:11:55.720 gonna smack you back we're not gonna like you're not gonna insult me because it's always like you
00:12:00.120 know i say wait a second why are you guys praying to saints i thought that that was a catholic thing 0.99
00:12:04.320 and then they're like well you're a nigger and i'm like okay so now we've got to yeah we've kind of 0.99
00:12:09.060 got to go back to ground zero and i'm like what do you guys actually believe and then we start 0.98
00:12:13.240 scratching at the surface this was at the point you probably remember um a couple months ago where
00:12:19.360 it was like the whole orthodox baptism thing was going around and that went viral yes it did it
00:12:24.680 got a lot of attention it's unfortunate that you know people didn't do more due diligence into that
00:12:29.160 but yeah due diligence but like yeah i was kind of at the the ground floor of that because now
00:12:34.600 i was asking questions and you know moving things around and another baptist pastor which i
00:12:38.960 disagree with also we've had him on the show uh jonathan shelley from the baptist bias he's the
00:12:43.380 one that kind of got that meme going and then i started to look into it ifb guy he debated jay
00:12:49.300 on sola scriptura like right before that uh after shelley i don't watch debates i don't know why
00:12:54.980 he he came on because uh we had a difference of uh of opinion on the sons of seth versus uh
00:13:02.140 children's of god children of god that kind of idea so we were talking about you know how the
00:13:06.660 Hebrew translates Elohim in the book of Job and so on and so forth, whatever it's a, it was a
00:13:11.480 debate, but the reason we don't do debates is because he goes, yeah, I think you're wrong.
00:13:16.720 And I go, well, I think you're wrong. And then we just kind of move on, you know, but it's like
00:13:20.140 agree to disagree. Yeah. Just whatever. Yeah. You don't agree. So what are we going to talk
00:13:24.520 about? I can call you stupid, but that's not necessarily correct. So, um, anyway, he jumps 1.00
00:13:29.680 in and that ball starts rolling and I didn't, you know, I see a lot going around where the
00:13:35.920 orthodox people are saying well that's been thoroughly debunked but i don't think it has
00:13:40.860 and also it's not even really a main point of contention for me if you got to make money make
00:13:44.800 money we're doing an event fucking show up pay some money but uh the the reasoning for it was
00:13:52.200 something like uh well yeah they have to pay the parishioners and they have to pay this person for 0.95
00:13:56.520 their time and then they have to pay for icons and i guess sacraments and robes and things like
00:14:01.420 that and it's like i get it you got to keep the lights on in the church you know this is a regular
00:14:04.920 this is a 501c3 idea. And before, you know, people throw out around the insult Protestant,
00:14:11.280 or, you know, they call me proddy and shit like that. It's like, that's fine. I'm not a Protestant 0.99
00:14:15.020 either. I understand the downfalls of that system. And I will say too, I'll let you jump in. But 0.52
00:14:20.420 that system, you know, it's one that I look at, I was like raised in that system as well.
00:14:28.820 And you see all the flaws in it, all the flaws of that system. I was inside of it kind of like
00:14:33.400 deep when i was younger i got kicked out you know so i'm familiar with the flaws but if you guys
00:14:39.420 were the one true church and they're an offshoot of you it's kind of your fault that there are so 0.98
00:14:45.140 many denominations because yeah because you guys are fucking up you guys you guys have you guys 0.97
00:14:52.360 have strayed from the bible in a way that has created this abomination that i do agree with 0.99
00:14:56.640 you but when i look at the orthodox church i also look at it as an abomination as well 1.00
00:15:00.980 And I can get into the reason for that a little bit, a little bit later. 0.91
00:15:05.780 But this episode is brought to you by Spreaker, the platform responsible for a rapidly spreading condition known as podcast brain.
00:15:13.340 Symptoms include buying microphones you don't need, explaining RSS feeds to confused relatives and saying things like, sorry, I can't talk right now.
00:15:21.360 I'm editing audio.
00:15:22.920 If this sounds familiar, you're probably already a podcaster.
00:15:26.300 The good news is Spreaker makes the whole process simple.
00:15:29.140 You record your show, upload it once, and Spreaker distributes it everywhere people listen.
00:15:34.000 Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and about a dozen apps your cousin swears are the next big thing.
00:15:39.580 Even better, Spreaker helps you monetize your show with ads, meaning your podcast might someday pay for, well, more microphones.
00:15:47.420 Start your show today at Spreaker.com.
00:15:50.080 Spreaker, because if you're going to talk to yourself for an hour, you might as well publish it.
00:15:54.980 So I guess what I was, yeah, let's talk about the baptism idea.
00:16:01.460 We saw $500, $300, someplace in Australia, $1,000 for the baptisms.
00:16:06.540 And that's to pay for the things that are happening.
00:16:10.300 That's fair, right?
00:16:11.520 Is that the explanation for it?
00:16:14.000 Generally, yeah, because there's a big party after usually.
00:16:17.300 I mean, a lot of these more ethnic parishes, right?
00:16:19.880 Like the Greeks, of course, they're going to have a huge party after.
00:16:23.160 the romanians as well that's the jurisdiction that i'm in so usually it goes to that uh and
00:16:29.720 there were so a lot of the main screenshots that were flying around on twitter there was a
00:16:36.040 buddy of mine he's also a lawyer uh he messaged me and he said hey i actually went and i called
00:16:41.160 all of these parishes uh i think there were like six five or six main screenshots that were flying
00:16:46.680 around he's like so i i went and i called them and i said hey is this like a mandatory thing
00:16:51.160 that we have to pay that. And the response across the board from each of them was like,
00:16:55.400 absolutely not. We do not require it. If somebody is unable to, because, you know, they're in a
00:17:00.900 tough financial situation, we would never require that of anybody. We would baptize them regardless.
00:17:06.320 Right. So a lot of that stuff is like for the vestments of the person that's being baptized.
00:17:10.440 They'll have like a white robe, like the food after supplies for the food, you know, and
00:17:15.500 generally that kind of thing. Okay. Yeah. It just flies in the face of, you know,
00:17:20.720 the book of apps acts i believe like chapter five where you know there's a eunuch on the road and
00:17:25.100 it's like well what do i got to do to get baptized he's like let's just find some water dog and they
00:17:28.840 do it so okay i am not opposed to that either you know again like we would never impose that on
00:17:34.840 anybody at least in my experience there's no church that said because you cannot afford you
00:17:39.980 know this fee we will not baptize you i think across the board especially like the ones that
00:17:44.260 we contacted they have all said that they would baptize somebody without the fee that that would
00:17:48.600 not be a hindrance to them being baptized yeah i i heard uh i guess i don't even know how to
00:17:53.860 pronounce the word i heard that if you're in the within the catechumen is that yeah that's correct
00:17:58.920 yeah catechumen okay yeah i guess that means that you're like training to be baptized or trying to
00:18:03.860 understand to become a part of the catholic a part of the orthodox church sorry um no we call
00:18:09.020 ourselves catholic sometimes so that works you do okay so yeah because we do see ourselves as
00:18:14.140 the universal church right the catholic orthodox church so yeah if we go back to in history even
00:18:20.480 there are like synods councils in the 1600s where even after the split we are still referring to
00:18:26.000 ourself as the catholic church okay so you just kind of like lost the branding of it which the
00:18:32.060 branding war yes we could have done a little better on that front okay that's fine where did
00:18:36.900 you you said you you found orthodoxy two years ago or you converted two years ago so what were you
00:18:42.220 what were you previously? What was your
00:18:44.780 spirituality, religious take?
00:18:47.200 Did COVID have anything to do
00:18:48.940 with it? Probably did,
00:18:50.840 honestly. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise
00:18:52.660 or not, you know, if you
00:18:54.540 ask my wife. You know, she'd be like, you know, he had his nose 0.99
00:18:56.800 in the books the whole time, but I was
00:18:58.900 raised in a Romanian Pentecostal
00:19:00.760 family, so
00:19:01.680 if you look at the Romanian Pentecostal community
00:19:04.760 today, they're a lot more westernized,
00:19:06.860 but when I was growing up, there were a lot of holdovers
00:19:08.920 I think from orthodoxy
00:19:11.080 in the old country you know the men and the women were segregated the women had head coverings
00:19:15.100 uh they approached the lord's supper a lot of places even today that are still like old school
00:19:20.940 romanian pentecostal will use uh two cups two chalices like one cup for the women and then
00:19:27.520 one cup for the men and uh they would usually just uh pass out the pita you know they wouldn't
00:19:33.620 have the little couplets that you see today in most uh evangelical churches that's changed today
00:19:39.460 think over the last 20 years or so they've really westernized uh but it was still it was a very
00:19:44.420 conservative upbringing still a huge emphasis on experience with god and speaking in tongues huge
00:19:51.320 emphasis on the scriptures and knowing the scriptures so i'm very thankful for my for those
00:19:56.200 aspects in my pentecostal upbringing um i think they're very gracious people and i think they're
00:20:01.360 all well-intentioned so i i appreciate that uh from them uh after that i spent about maybe four
00:20:07.960 or five years at like an independent bible baptist church so they were like i call them
00:20:12.860 calvangelicals you know redeemed zoomer nowadays he gets so pretentious over the term calvinist
00:20:17.600 he's like if you're not part of the historical reformation you cannot call yourself calvinist
00:20:22.200 and it's like dude john macarthur is a calvinist man chill like so uh i went to that calvangelical
00:20:28.860 church for a few years and uh that's really when i started digging into church history and trying
00:20:33.980 to figure out uh exactly what happened because you know these debates between like me and my
00:20:40.640 family my brothers you know uh and my other friends about oh is there free will or is it
00:20:45.600 predestination or and then the thought occurred to me like you know maybe the earliest christians
00:20:50.420 are probably in the best position to understand the bible and what it means right so i went back
00:20:57.660 to to read uh you know what they had to say about it and the way they understood the bible
00:21:02.480 is vastly different from the way evangelicals understand the Bible today.
00:21:07.100 So that was kind of the first domino that led to, you know,
00:21:09.840 about two years of just reading church fathers and church history,
00:21:13.940 leading up to me being received into the church just under two years ago.
00:21:18.540 Okay. Yeah, I understand that.
00:21:21.340 And I'm sympathetic to that inclination.
00:21:22.880 But like, you know, throughout the Bible,
00:21:24.160 even these guys that walked with Christ, they were being condemned by him.
00:21:27.680 They're walking with God and talking to him every day,
00:21:29.940 and they still couldn't get it right.
00:21:31.780 uh peter peter one of my favorite characters because it's like you see the characters one
00:21:36.960 of my favorite people because you see so much of him and his flaws in yourself and it's a question
00:21:43.640 that like we i constantly ask on this show where uh covet happened let's just say covet and we had
00:21:49.820 like a vaccine it's like did you say no to that were you able to deny that and withstand that
00:21:53.940 that's an easy test it's test number one and you kind of look back at peter that point where you
00:21:59.180 know christ is about to be crucified he told me you're gonna deny me three times and he did it
00:22:04.140 and this is a guy that was like anointed by christ as his right-hand man and it's it's it's a
00:22:11.160 beautiful story because it shows his humanity and it really shows who and and that doesn't get fixed
00:22:17.120 when jesus dies and resurrects either because he has to be condemned later on by paul for you know
00:22:22.320 corrected but yes well yeah corrected there was there was a little bit of a fight there but it's
00:22:26.760 like these are people these are people but and i get into some trouble and i like maybe i like
00:22:32.860 your opinion on this i get into trouble when uh i talk about even even angels the the respect that
00:22:39.520 we should have toward an angel and uh people say that i would show very little respect or
00:22:46.120 disrespect but i think there's a very thin line of uh there's a very thin line of attention and
00:22:53.960 worship not that is not worth that's the wrong word attention and respect that we should give
00:22:58.000 to these entities because they're here to do a job and when we give them more respect than they
00:23:03.200 deserve they end up full i don't know if you believe in uh well obviously believe in the
00:23:07.700 scriptures of you know genesis 6 and stuff of fallen angels i have an enochian view on that
00:23:12.780 so i think we have that in common on yeah okay and you know the first enoch is fine the rest of
00:23:18.720 it gets a little wacky but it's a it's all you know pick and choose and try to figure out what's
00:23:23.080 going on. So you see the fall of the angels and I'm like, I'm not going to make that mistake.
00:23:29.200 And then I also like, I like to look at Elijah, some of the prophets that were, you know, in the
00:23:35.000 grace of God constantly talking to him directly. When they encounter angels, it's not really a big
00:23:40.660 deal because I think that their disposition toward them is correct, where it's more like, okay,
00:23:45.700 respect. You have a job to do though, do it. And I'll, I'll see you later, you know, make me the
00:23:51.460 breakfast and I'll go back to bed, this kind of thing. So that for me trickles down to how we
00:23:57.440 treat saints or how we treat church elders. These are men. These are men that took shits just like
00:24:03.760 us and stubbed their toe. And there is value in what they're saying. Unfortunately, when I come up 0.99
00:24:12.140 on the online sect and even in-person section, we're in a coffee shop. This is where we do our
00:24:18.280 studio. So right outside those doors, we'll open them up and I'll be in here working before and
00:24:23.100 after the show and customers and friends and people will come through here and they want to
00:24:26.860 talk to me about this and that. The worst conversations I've had have been with people
00:24:33.220 that I actually know in real life that are Orthodox Christians. I'm sorry to hear that. 1.00
00:24:38.560 That's unfortunate. Me too. Because before they converted, they were reasonable people. But a lot
00:24:46.000 of it is like, well, who do you think you are reading the Bible and figuring out like, I don't
00:24:49.020 know, I'm going to continue to read the Bible and try to figure this out myself. And I think you are
00:24:53.440 too. But yeah, the point is, like, my view on this is like, I'm looking at them as men, because they
00:24:59.940 are men, and they're fallible, and they made mistakes. And I mean, even the letters that Paul
00:25:04.700 is writing to these churches, which are the I guess the origination, they're the beginning of
00:25:09.000 orthodoxy, or the first churches, they're screwing up left and right. It's all condemnations of what
00:25:14.780 they're doing wrong. And none of them are uniform either. They're all doing something slightly
00:25:18.720 different. So I have a hard time looking at an institution, a tax-free institution, and saying
00:25:27.340 that it's infallible and also that it holds God's power within its four walls. Am I getting that
00:25:34.100 wrong? Is that not the belief? Because Jay has said that to us as well. And it was kind of like
00:25:40.120 weird so when i mean you addressed i think there were like two issues in there that we can talk
00:25:45.620 about each of them if you want there's like the veneration of angels and saints and you know holy
00:25:50.860 men and uh whether we can trust the historical church or like the two issues i caught on there
00:25:56.560 uh does that sound right yeah just about i know it's it's going everywhere but like again it's
00:26:01.220 not a debate just like a conversation so whichever we pick up and whatever we drop doesn't really
00:26:05.660 matter. This episode is brought to you by Spreaker, the platform responsible for a rapidly
00:26:09.960 spreading condition known as podcast brain. Symptoms include buying microphones you don't
00:26:15.100 need, explaining RSS feeds to confused relatives, and saying things like, sorry, I can't talk right

00:26:47.660 at spreaker.com spreaker because if you're going to talk to yourself for an hour you might as well
00:26:53.900 publish it yeah so for the veneration of like angels and saints you can absolutely cross a line
00:27:00.260 And you see that in scriptures with Cornelius we brought up earlier.
00:27:04.540 It said that he bowed down and worshipped Peter.
00:27:08.780 And Peter said, get up, I'm just a man.
00:27:12.000 Same thing, we have the example in Revelation of St. John, the apostle, where he bowed to the angel.
00:27:19.300 And the angel said that it's not appropriate to do that.
00:27:24.080 That said, we have to keep in mind the counterexamples.
00:27:27.360 Because on one hand, we have that side of going too far.
00:27:30.820 On the other hand, we see in Revelation 3 that those who are in the synagogue of Satan
00:27:34.500 are going to be made to bow down to proskuneo, to the saints of God.
00:27:40.100 What scripture is this?
00:27:41.700 I think it's Revelation 3, 9.
00:27:45.440 Yeah, let's see that.
00:27:47.180 Yeah.
00:27:49.360 Okay, so I'll pull it up on screen for us.
00:27:52.460 Here we go.
00:27:53.240 Yes. So this is a command from Jesus. Jesus is saying he will make them bow down towards the saints, right?
00:28:15.940 So this is a proper veneration of, you know, the saints of God.
00:28:20.400 You also have in Genesis, Lot bowed down to the two angels that went and visited him at Sodom, and he was never rebuked for that.
00:28:29.480 There was no indication that that was improper.
00:28:32.480 It was just like a standard, you know, kind of greeting.
00:28:35.880 So in between like these two examples, right, where on one hand it is, there is some inappropriate worship.
00:28:42.400 Well, just the question, when does Revelation 3 take place here?
00:28:46.260 Like, when is it, when are they talking about?
00:28:48.220 Are they talking about the prophetic? Are they talking about within New Jerusalem?
00:28:52.640 Are these people, are these saints, glorified body saints or saints that are still alive?
00:28:59.240 So on these topics, there's like a range of permissible views in the Orthodox Church.
00:29:04.680 So I don't want to come off as like what I'm saying is like the definitive view in the Orthodox Church.
00:29:09.140 It's the same thing with Genesis 6. We have a range of permissible views there.
00:29:13.120 I think the Enochian view is like one of the permissible views to have within that range.
00:29:18.220 For like eschatology and like this passage in particular, the understanding that, you know, I think makes the most sense is that this is like the persecuted church and the saints in glory.
00:29:29.060 So it'd be more eschatological.
00:29:31.940 Okay.
00:29:32.380 Now, when they kneel at them, when they bow down, there's that it doesn't mention worship.
00:29:38.980 It seems more like submission.
00:29:42.000 Yes.
00:29:42.600 So in the second temple period, there are like different gradations of veneration and worship.
00:29:49.700 And that's why like the distinction between dulia and hyperdulia and latria that the church makes about like 800 years later, that was out of necessity to show that there's like a gradation of different levels of honor you can give somebody.
00:30:04.100 Right. So latria, it would be like the highest level of like worship honor that you can give to something that is to God alone.
00:30:10.580 that's like a sacrifice of incense or the sacrifice of the Eucharist
00:30:14.260 that is the highest form of worship we give that only to God
00:30:17.300 asking somebody for help or praising them
00:30:21.640 we would say that that's a lower level category that you can give to
00:30:24.940 really anybody so if you bow to someone in respect
00:30:28.480 in different cultures they do that if you kiss somebody
00:30:32.260 we would say that you are honoring that person and that's an appropriate form
00:30:36.500 of veneration that doesn't reach that highest level of worship that would
00:30:40.360 offend God and the commands we have in his word in the Bible. Right. It just seems like a slippery
00:30:46.100 slope, something not to play with it. Like from my studies, I'm doing, I don't even know, like
00:30:54.540 16 parts on the idea of worship. I'm a musician, so I'm trying to figure out what worship is as
00:31:00.560 it pertains to frequency or alignment with God or even in the other direction. And it appears to me
00:31:07.100 that we are kind of uh we're just like entities that are made to worship one thing or another
00:31:15.700 and yes worship worship seems like uh it seems like uh the way to avoid sin it's it's in which
00:31:25.980 direction you're oriented and in which direction you're paying attention so if at any time during
00:31:31.580 the day I don't have my eyes or my thoughts on God, I feel like that is a form of sin. My
00:31:38.140 calibration is off. I know you might differ, but if I'm not constantly oriented toward God,
00:31:43.640 I am going in a different direction. So when we venerate or pray to a thing, a drawing,
00:31:58.500 a dead saint jesus's mother which is another strange one 0.98
00:32:03.540 how do how do you differentiate this and also isn't that getting like kind of jewy
00:32:09.760 like we're like well maybe yeah like like we're we're just kind of like i don't know counting
00:32:14.420 sand here when in reality legalistic maybe is that what you're saying no i'm just saying you're
00:32:21.380 in danger like a so i had mentioned at the top of the show our disagreement with timothy alberino
00:32:26.860 know and it's i don't i'll break it down for you but it is the same idea at heart he uh called us
00:32:34.080 retarded because we said aliens are demons we're like big this is a conspiracy show and we also
00:32:39.840 love jesus so like yeah there are a few orthodox saints that would agree with you on that i know 0.91
00:32:44.700 i think father seraphim rose would agree with me right um yeah yeah and again it's it's been an
00:32:50.140 unfortunate turn of events because of how people have behaved and what i've gleamed from what
00:32:56.800 they're saying, especially, I don't have the screenshots on me, but Jay Dyer's saying you
00:33:00.280 can't, salvation is not attainable outside of the Orthodox Church. I say, well, now we have a big
00:33:04.560 problem. And you should have that too, growing up in a Pentecostal church. I'm sure that you've met
00:33:10.000 people that are, you know, examples of God's faith within that church, but neither here nor there.
00:33:18.720 I guess, yeah, going back to the aliens or demons things, the issue that he had was
00:33:23.660 you're you're you're sweeping with too broad of a brush and we're not defining the insectalines
00:33:29.540 from the reptilians from the grays and i was like okay well you know and he's also a christian so i
00:33:34.720 said well biblically speaking there is no gray ground there's no middle ground they'll spit you
00:33:40.260 out of his mouth if you're lukewarm you're either for god or against god especially when we're
00:33:44.420 talking in in the in the heavenly realm in the i guess the elohim realm there is there are two sides
00:33:50.660 none can remain neutral and we read in uh i think second kings or judges i forget exactly where the
00:33:57.660 the country of miraz remained neutral and they were punished for not backing israel at the time
00:34:03.740 that god asked them to check that out that that's also an interesting one i'd like to hear what the
00:34:08.580 orthodox have to say about miraz some people think it's a planet i don't know but the point being is
00:34:15.000 that okay you're going on and and and at that point he was on the trajectory to go on rogan
00:34:21.740 he was he was just on like big daily wire show so i'm like you're going on these shows
00:34:26.200 and you're somewhat preaching the gospel of jesus christ or at least you should be pointing back to
00:34:31.840 christ in some meaningful fashion which is another issue that i had with dyer going on
00:34:36.120 tucker that was absent and i don't know you're pointing people towards an institution rather
00:34:42.840 than Jesus Christ himself, it could be a little bit of an issue. But he wants to define terms
00:34:50.540 and count sand. And I go, that's going to get a lot of people in trouble, man.
00:34:55.100 Like we need to, but maybe it would be better to blanket term this and say, hey,
00:34:59.720 don't even play around with this. You know, these things are of a malevolent nature.
00:35:05.740 Don't look at them, get away from them. When you see them, rebuke them, move on.
00:35:10.160 same thing with icons idols veneration saints i don't know i've i've read some stuff where uh
00:35:19.000 i i've read that the catholic church has integrated some of these saints because they
00:35:23.060 were picking up pagan cultures and they wanted that to be appealing to people so they put that
00:35:27.420 in there and i'm not really a fan of poking around and seeing what's what i've already been like you
00:35:34.140 know we've been touched by the supernatural me in magnificent ways and i've been you know i've been
00:35:40.760 a victim of witchcraft in some ways like the stories get crazy but they're real they this
00:35:45.640 this stuff happens uh so i'm like i'm not really interested in playing around with this and it
00:35:51.180 seems like that's what is happening here which is why i'm against it yeah in our view i think the
00:35:57.940 boundary between the scene and unseen realm is porous i think like you were describing that
00:36:03.420 there obviously are things going back and forth uh that said we're told in the scriptures that
00:36:08.940 you know the church is trustworthy that the church is the pillar and ground of the truth
00:36:14.540 and uh that the church you know instructs you in some way that you have to follow what the church
00:36:19.660 says like it's not optional to follow what the church says right so this that kind of begs the
00:36:24.780 question but like what is the church right what exactly does that mean well that's why i brought
00:36:29.740 up these passages on authority earlier the power to bind and lose because you see the only way
00:36:34.780 really those terms could have been understood within the second temple period milieu is within
00:36:41.820 a chain of authority so there's a jewish tradition at the time that you see uh even through their own
00:36:47.580 documents like the mishnah which i think is like the earliest document they have trying to record
00:36:52.380 these like second temple period uh traditions it's called smika which refers to like a chain
00:36:58.140 of authority and ordinations through the laying on of hands from one line through the Aaronic
00:37:04.260 priesthood from Aaron to the Levites to the priesthood that you see at the time. And then
00:37:09.720 another one through Moses, through the laying on of hands, who was laying hands on Joshua and on
00:37:14.540 the 70 elders that you see in numbers and also in Exodus, there's a version of it. So you see a
00:37:21.380 passing down through of like judicial and priestly authority that goes all the way down to the
00:37:27.360 Pharisees and to the priesthood at the time of Christ.
00:37:30.940 So that's why you see in Matthew 23 and throughout the gospels, 0.64
00:37:34.280 like Christ just accuses the Pharisees of like being hypocrites.
00:37:37.020 And he says that their interpretations and their application of the law is
00:37:41.620 wrong, but he never says to people to not obey the Pharisees.
00:37:45.740 In Matthew 23,
00:37:46.540 he says to listen to the Pharisees and to obey them because they sit in the 0.95
00:37:50.960 seat of Moses, but don't do what they do because they're hypocrites. 0.97
00:37:53.900 And then he goes on to talk about how they're hypocrites the whole time. 0.95
00:37:56.800 He says that, you know, you shut people out of heaven, even though you yourself don't
00:38:00.900 enter, you bind things on people, but you never lose anything.
00:38:04.420 And then he even says at the end of that chapter that their authority will be taken away from
00:38:08.720 them and they'll be replaced with prophets and with scribes.
00:38:12.120 And you see throughout the Old Testament prophecies about the fulfillment of the church and what
00:38:16.580 will it look like under the new covenant.
00:38:18.480 It's really the Orthodox church that fits those criteria.
00:38:21.380 And you see that he started a new chain of authority with the apostles and you see with
00:38:25.640 St. Paul, this transmission of authority through the laying on of hands to St. Timothy, which is
00:38:31.480 why we think that historical continuity is necessary. Right, but you also don't see the
00:38:36.860 correlation from the line of Moses all the way to the modern-day Pharisee, how things have changed.
00:38:42.820 This is the second temple period Pharisee at that. So like today, we would say that, yes,
00:38:47.680 Christ took that authority away from them at that time, and then he gave it to the apostles. So
00:38:51.760 we would say that ever since, you know, the Great Commission or John 20, that the Pharisees did not
00:38:57.880 have that authority anymore. So like rabbinical Jews today would claim some sort of succession 1.00
00:39:02.400 from that, which we can say definitively they don't have that succession because the Roman
00:39:07.620 Empire purposely stamped out that line of succession in about the 400s. So there is no
00:39:14.160 succession for them back to the Pharisees anyway. But even if they did, Christ took it away from 0.77
00:39:19.360 them and established a new chain of authority and reconstituted the priesthood based on again like
00:39:24.760 many prophecies that you see in the old testament talking about that i know and in the new testament
00:39:29.220 in the later books it's all riddled with what they did wrong already within 30 40 years of christ
00:39:35.060 leaving so now we're 2 000 years separated and and that still stands this is what i'm saying like
00:39:40.540 men are men they're good the first thing we're going to do is destroy a thing and it's going
00:39:44.960 have to constantly be rebuilt and that's how you get protestism in 45 000 different denominations
00:39:52.660 and that's how you get snake charmers and people floating in the back of church and all kinds of 0.74
00:39:58.060 wacky shit smoke smoke machines and electric i like the electric guitars it's fine but it's like
00:40:02.320 it's not that it's fine i i personally enjoy i know you guys have tradition uh but i do think 0.97
00:40:08.900 that there are ways to worship God that, uh, that perhaps weren't thought of by the original
00:40:16.660 apostles. And I think God honors that stuff if it truly does come from the heart. But so, yeah,
00:40:23.700 like it's, it's hard for me to believe that the Orthodox church has not just maintained the exact
00:40:31.400 tradition, but nothing has gone, nothing has gone astray at all. But then I look at, uh, I don't
00:40:36.980 know, like, I think it's second Timothy four, uh, we're talking about marrying, being a doctrine of
00:40:44.480 not marrying, being a doctrine of the devil. And I know that Orthodox priests, if they are already 0.90
00:40:49.380 ordained, are not allowed to marry. So it's, and again, I don't, I'm not trying to like shoot you
00:40:55.200 guys in the foot. It just seems strange. It seems like you can't claim to have 100% direct lineage
00:41:02.820 when there are are strange offshoots and also the orthodox is the orthodox church completely
00:41:07.560 in line like every single branch of the orthodox church completely in line with what one another
00:41:14.500 is saying we all believe the same things in terms of doctrine yes but some shut down for
00:41:20.240 covet and some didn't yes that's that's administrative that's not theology or or
00:41:25.740 doctrine kind of is it's it's i can see how it's related but it's not directly
00:41:31.600 yeah it just seems like it's like i don't know in order to claim that it's the one
00:41:36.520 true church of christ and then it has to be a monolith non-changing that goes directly from
00:41:41.980 the words of christ to the apostle but it's like there are you know things have things have changed
00:41:46.380 things are a little bit different and and that's fine this episode is brought to you by spreaker
00:41:51.480 the platform responsible for a rapidly spreading condition known as podcast brain symptoms include
00:41:57.220 buying microphones you don't need, explaining RSS feeds to confused relatives, and saying
00:42:02.000 things like, sorry, I can't talk right now, I'm editing audio.
00:42:05.820 If this sounds familiar, you're probably already a podcaster.
00:42:09.240 The good news is Spreaker makes the whole process simple.
00:42:12.380 You record your show, upload it once, and Spreaker distributes it everywhere people
00:42:16.280 listen, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and about a dozen apps your cousin swears are the next
00:42:21.280 big thing.
00:42:22.440 Even better, Spreaker helps you monetize your show with ads, meaning your podcast might
00:42:26.580 someday pay for well more microphones start your show today at spreaker.com spreaker because if
00:42:34.360 you're going to talk to yourself for an hour you might as well publish it and i also would like to
00:42:39.960 apologize for saying that uh salvation is not attainable within the orthodox church not a nice
00:42:47.620 thing to say uh i just felt like it was a proper response to the orthodox church saying that about
00:42:52.840 anything else so if that's fair uh i guess we could kind of go on from there and maybe we could
00:43:02.000 talk about that the idea of salvation it's just the more i like read and and pray and think about
00:43:10.220 the sacrifice of jesus christ and what he did in that moment and how how it's a transmutation of
00:43:20.040 reality i mean so much so much goes back to it like even the idea of the like the passover hyssop
00:43:25.720 like that's used to paint the blood on the wall and it's like that's used to give him his life
00:43:29.060 it's such a fan and it's such a fantastic through line and from the beginning of the word of god
00:43:37.420 it all leads back and points to that one moment on the cross and then i have to hear somebody say
00:43:45.120 that that one moment is now only attainable and accessible through this specific 501c3 denomination
00:43:54.360 or i guess you wouldn't call yourself a denomination you call yourself an institution or
00:43:58.680 church i have a problem with that it it demeans god it demeans the sacrifice of jesus christ
00:44:06.280 and then you know i'll push back and be very rhetorical because it's twitter
00:44:10.820 and say something like well you know that's what twitter's for really i mean like it's just supposed
00:44:16.080 to be a few words back and forth right so listen anybody i've got like 50 000 followers on there
00:44:21.520 that's how you do it you say the boldest thing and maybe a racial slur underneath it and then
00:44:27.400 get the conversation started but it's it's good because it could it'll draw out like i enjoy this
00:44:33.040 conversation right now that i'm having with you because it's it's provoked that in a way
00:44:36.780 unfortunately i had to uh get my get my hands really dirty you know to uh to have a meaningful
00:44:44.440 conversation but uh you guys you have no qualms with that like like as far as especially with
00:44:51.880 your background it's just like a strange understanding for me to believe that that
00:44:58.500 eternal sacrifice that happened there is only attainable in in one small one small place
00:45:05.440 so i think one of the like one of the reasons why we're speaking past each other a smidge
00:45:13.100 is because we have different understandings of like what the church is so we don't see the church
00:45:19.600 as just like an institution that's just made up of men that like very obviously make mistakes and
00:45:25.440 sometimes like many mistakes right we think that in spite of that god the holy spirit is working
00:45:32.080 through that to, you know, make sure that it is preserved and that, you know, it can be maintained
00:45:37.660 as Christ's body, right? He says that I will not leave you as orphans. I will be with you till the
00:45:41.980 end of the age, right? So he's not going to leave us alone. He's going to be with us. And we see
00:45:47.320 that in Ephesians chapter one, at the very end of the chapter, he says that the church is the
00:45:52.600 fullness of Christ. So this is not like some abstract, you know, just whoever vaguely believes
00:45:59.820 in Christ makes up this like platonic form of the church, like somewhere out there in the land of
00:46:06.000 abstractions. You see that in Matthew 18, when Christ says, like, if you have a problem with
00:46:10.680 your brother, take it and you go through the process, right? You confront them, you bring
00:46:14.980 your friends, then take it to the church. He's talking about something tangible there, right?
00:46:19.480 It's not like an invisible, vague, just whoever accepts Jesus in their heart. This is something
00:46:24.720 that can make administrative decisions and can administer, like, disputes.
00:46:29.340 This is the same authority that, like, Timothy has over elders.
00:46:32.340 When St. Paul tells Timothy that if somebody brings a charge against an elder,
00:46:38.120 make sure you have at least, like, two or three witnesses,
00:46:41.720 and then you adjudicate the disputes over the elders.
00:46:44.700 So that's kind of a tangential point.
00:46:46.960 Right away we see, like, a three-tiered office already in the letters to St. Timothy.
00:46:51.280 thing um but i mean the church as an institution it is the body of christ it is not in our view
00:46:58.720 just a man-made institution it is the fullness of christ that's where you find christ is in his
00:47:04.640 church and we see time and again throughout the scriptures like multiple times in the new testament
00:47:09.800 uh in the old testament you have the first schismatic who decided to go start their own
00:47:15.020 faction was cora and that did not end well for cora he ended up going to hades you know swallowed
00:47:20.600 it up right there by the earth. In Galatians 5, St. Paul says that he's talking about the fruits
00:47:27.480 of the flesh, and he's contrasting them with the fruits of the spirit, and he says among the fruits
00:47:31.680 of the flesh are factions and dissensions, and that factions will keep you out of the eternal
00:47:38.060 kingdom. So you cannot go and like start your own church or set up your own altar, and this is how
00:47:43.860 the earliest Christians also understood this. So if there's like an elder somewhere that sets up
00:47:49.980 his own altar uh contrary to like what the bishops say or what the councils say at that time whoever's
00:47:56.620 like the the church government then they're part of a faction they are a sectarian they're no longer
00:48:02.640 in the church their salvation is in like grave danger so i understand like the concerns that
00:48:08.320 you have for us because i mean uh and from the outside looking in i understand the veneration
00:48:14.000 stuff uh you know might be like strange or weird or like different especially from a western
00:48:21.340 context i just want to be clear i don't necessarily have concerns for your salvation uh i'm a bad
00:48:26.120 i'm a bad christian in that sense where i'm not like a guy that's going to be doing you know
00:48:31.180 evangelical outreach um i'm worried about my salvation that's hard enough for me every single
00:48:37.060 day is it yeah this is and and it should be for everybody else too you wake up and you know that
00:48:42.000 you're already doing something wrong or your thoughts are somewhere else this just happens
00:48:46.220 constantly once i open up twitter so i'm worried about me right my concern is not necessarily about
00:48:51.260 you my concern is about uh telling other people this which i don't believe to be true telling
00:48:58.760 other people that we have found the one way this is the one way we do it and by the way this is
00:49:02.900 what we do here we're burning incense we're i mean the orthodox prayer to mary is a little
00:49:07.940 staggering too well let me let me close out this idea real quick and then we can get to that i was
00:49:12.620 a little bit long-winded there but i'll get to the point here is that uh so at every single liturgy
00:49:18.260 we do pray for the whole world we're offering up the eucharist as a sacrifice for the whole world
00:49:24.080 we believe jesus died for the whole world right so we are praying for everybody to be saved we're
00:49:29.760 hopeful that uh everyone will be saved you know we're not universalists but i mean if you have
00:49:34.820 an option to hope we would hope for everybody we don't want anybody to end up in eternal torment
00:49:39.200 although it's like a real possibility so and we also believe in praying for the dead we have a
00:49:45.040 saint saint verus who is uh in particular for the praying for the saint of praying for the dead who
00:49:51.040 have died outside the church so we believe that even though uh they die outside the church and
00:49:57.700 you know they end up in hades right shale uh that does not necessarily mean that they will end up
00:50:03.440 in Gehenna because although you can't repent you know after your soul leaves your body you can still
00:50:08.520 be forgiven so we're hopeful that at the final judgment God who Saint Paul says he desires for
00:50:14.960 every man to be saved right like thank goodness he has this inclination to save to towards salvation
00:50:20.540 for us right that he'll be a fair judge for everybody at the end so and if you look at what
00:50:26.940 the judgment is at the final judgment every single every single time it's mentioned whether
00:50:30.780 it's revelation 20 or romans 2 it says that they will be judged according to their deeds
00:50:35.360 so i mean for some people the orthodox church is just not available to them or they were taught
00:50:40.900 something different their whole life we believe that god will be a fair judge in those circumstances
00:50:45.080 and although their participation in the first resurrection that might be limited i think at
00:50:50.540 the final judgment that god will be a fair i'm a lawyer i've been in front of many judges a lot of 0.78
00:50:55.820 them really smart a lot of them also dumb as rocks right i trust god to be the best judge
00:51:01.940 uh out of all of them and to look at the totality of the circumstances for each person 0.97
00:51:06.380 so i think that's that's kind of the orthodox view on like salvation outside the church it's
00:51:12.800 something i think about too we we've discussed on the show a bunch um this idea let's say
00:51:17.080 somebody's had 20 years on earth and they get taken out and now they have to sit in the judgment
00:51:23.120 seat versus somebody who's had 70 years on earth and they're old they're both sinners but it's like
00:51:29.800 man like i hope that that younger kid gets great on a curve because i know when i was 20 right like
00:51:34.980 i was kind of like how could you i couldn't possibly start to fathom even this conversation
00:51:40.060 or this i the idea of christ and and the sacrifices one until i had children and two
00:51:45.520 probably until i was like over 30 you know like that's when your brain starts to actually work
00:51:50.580 in a functioning way yeah i agree yeah so but but again god is a god of justice so everything that
00:51:56.100 he does is righteous and perfectly balanced so yeah we have to assume that i i'm not going to
00:52:00.840 get mixed up in the idea of uh praying for the dead i i think dead is dead i think that uh jesus
00:52:07.280 jesus told a parable of that where uh there's a man on the other side he's like yeah you can't
00:52:11.260 reach him there that's that's it that's it you can't give him advice but whatever it doesn't
00:52:16.140 really matter to me you know dead is dead we need to reach the people that are here now that are
00:52:19.760 alive um but i do want to talk about that for a moment sorry i don't want to interrupt but
00:52:25.240 yeah and from the the orthodox view we see that uh like before christ uh in his resurrection and
00:52:31.360 the harrowing of hades that the landscape of you know metaphysical reality was like quite different
00:52:38.240 that this is what saint john talks about when he talks about the first resurrection when your soul
00:52:42.460 leaves your body the righteous they no longer go to hades right like king david he's not in hades
00:52:48.660 he's you know he's taken out of Hades by Christ right and he's in heaven now on God's divine
00:52:53.900 counsel that's what we call like the first resurrection the second resurrection is the
00:52:58.200 resurrection of everybody physically where they have the the final judgment right so it's in our
00:53:04.040 mind it's like weird to say that the righteous who have passed on that they are dead because they are
00:53:09.020 like in the presence of life itself right like God is the source of life so if you're like standing
00:53:15.100 before him in his throne room from the orthodox like orthodox ears it's like very strange to hear
00:53:20.860 that and uh i think that there's like a really good verse on this and john 11 verse 25 it's about
00:53:28.340 lazarus and like right before christ resurrects him this episode is brought to you by spreaker
00:53:33.840 the platform responsible for a rapidly spreading condition known as podcast brain symptoms include
00:53:39.580 buying microphones you don't need explaining rss feeds to confused relatives and saying things like
00:53:44.920 sorry, I can't talk right now, I'm editing audio. If this sounds familiar, you're probably already
00:53:50.640 a podcaster. The good news is Spreaker makes the whole process simple. You record your show,
00:53:55.920 upload it once, and Spreaker distributes it everywhere people listen. Apple Podcasts,
00:54:00.220 Spotify, and about a dozen apps your cousin swears are the next big thing.
00:54:04.800 Even better, Spreaker helps you monetize your show with ads, meaning your podcast might someday pay
00:54:09.520 for well more microphones start your show today at spreaker.com spreaker because if you're going
00:54:17.100 to talk to yourself for an hour you might as well publish it uh i'll start from verse 24 i'll just
00:54:22.780 read it says martha said to him jesus i know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last
00:54:28.280 day and jesus said to her i am the resurrection in the life he who believes in me will live even
00:54:35.100 if he dies everyone who lives and believes in me will never die ever do you believe this and i think
00:54:43.040 that john here writing this i think he's talking about like i think breaking the fourth wall a
00:54:47.760 little bit to the reader it's like do you believe this right so i think that's a question we all
00:54:52.120 have to ask ourselves you know that if you believe in christ if you do what he says you believe in
00:54:57.220 him and you believe him right if you're uh you know repenting of your sin if uh you're doing what
00:55:04.400 uh god instructed us to do in baptism and being joined to his covenant people right that you will
00:55:10.160 never die ever it doesn't say that it says if you believe in me yeah so we take you know we're never
00:55:16.620 not the whole bible right so if you believe in him you're also going to believe what he commands
00:55:21.180 and you're going to do what he says right so in like john chapter 2 for example when he says that
00:55:26.040 you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven unless you're born again of water and of the spirit
00:55:29.740 i think that's a very obvious reference to baptism that's how the church has interpreted it
00:55:35.340 that's how the early christians saw it so uh and again like as an interesting one like god's gonna
00:55:41.720 judge us based off our certainly fairly based off our circumstances and what we know right so like
00:55:46.360 the thief on the cross obviously he had no opportunity to go get baptized after he repented
00:55:50.980 right so i think we can have faith and hope in god that he's going to be fair but that we still
00:55:56.360 have to do what he says and again this is a very interesting thing right like if i am not orthodox
00:56:03.580 um and i never will be at this point but i live a life aimed at christ everything that i do even
00:56:10.760 my business is aimed at christ i am baptized i preach the word of god to people that want to
00:56:17.980 hear it i joke around a lot too but um this is like you know this is how i'm living um and it
00:56:24.920 doesn't really matter to me what other people think, whether I'm going to hell or not, or the
00:56:29.740 state of my salvation. I just find it interesting, especially when we're like kind of intermingled
00:56:34.440 in a weird way. And it's like, it's never like, it's never stated outright until the rubber hits
00:56:43.400 the road, where these people who are kind of like my colleagues or my peers, Jim Bob, Jim Bob's been
00:56:49.360 following me for years. He loves what I do until recently. Jay Dyer, the same sort of thing. Andrew
00:56:55.300 Wilson also was a follower of mine for a little while until he blocked me. That's fine. Because
00:57:00.060 just this one little crux there. And then I have to, I don't like to do it, but then I have to look
00:57:04.700 at the state of my life versus the state of theirs and which way I'm walking and what I'm doing.
00:57:10.240 And then I'm going to be told by somebody else, a chain smoker possibly, that, oh no, you're not
00:57:15.560 gonna and i don't know like this this verse right here jesus said to her uh if you believe in me
00:57:22.180 you'll never die do you believe the i believe that i believe what jesus said
00:57:27.020 and uh i don't know there's a lot of other stipulations that are putting put on this
00:57:32.460 not not even not necessarily necessarily within the bible i like to review some of those scriptures
00:57:36.680 at another time where they're talking about all the you must be baptized and i get that
00:57:40.980 you should be baptized. And then, you know, salvation through faith, but then you should
00:57:45.580 also have the works, right? Yes. Because if you are saved, then it should show, the fruit should
00:57:49.940 show. Yeah. And it's a, in our view, it's a synergistic relationship. So the more faith you
00:57:55.500 have, the more works you'll do. And the more works you do, your works also feed your faith. So it
00:57:59.620 goes back and forth. Yeah. Yeah. I, I, I say something similar. Like, it's like, why would I
00:58:04.980 not why would i not do this thing every time i feed this it feeds me back tenfold so it's like
00:58:10.960 it's almost uh self-serving at at this point because like you know you kind of know and i
00:58:16.600 guess you know it's a little trick that people got to figure out in their life that if they do
00:58:19.840 this thing then they're but i'm not here for the earthly gains like that's not necessarily what i
00:58:25.680 want um what i want i've been explicit actually on the last couple of shows it's it's a very
00:58:31.080 interesting take. I wonder what you think about it. It's like making not just a covenant with
00:58:36.520 God, but making an agreement like, hey, I've dedicated my life to you. I'm dedicating my
00:58:41.740 life to you. Whatever I have here is yours, not this stuff. Who cares about me? That's yours. I
00:58:47.160 don't necessarily want anything physical, but what I do want is what I want desperately for my
00:58:51.540 children. How do you plant that seed for the generations to come? That's the most important
00:58:56.920 thing, not about what I can do now or what I could even leave them, although that would be nice.
00:59:03.300 And yeah, that's kind of where my mind's been at a lot lately. Like, how do I keep witches out of
00:59:08.600 my family going forward? How do I have children that embrace the Lord, whether it's in orthodoxy
00:59:15.020 or, you know, Pentecostalism or whatever? How do I have children that do love God and that do
00:59:21.420 believe in this, that do believe in me and then won't die later. That's what I'm concerned about.
00:59:28.920 And then I come online to people who I think should be, uh, spreading this idea. And instead
00:59:37.020 I get a debate. I get to like, and, and I've been doing this for a long, like I've been doing this
00:59:42.760 show for a while, but I've been online. I mean, you know, within the realm of podcasts for over
00:59:47.880 a decade. I've worked for all the people that you can think of, whether it's graphic design or
00:59:52.720 helping them do production. I'm familiar when somebody's trying to debate me. And this is what
00:59:57.640 I get constantly with these people. And I'm like, well, where is God? Where is God in this
01:00:04.980 conversation? No one's concerned about this. You want to slip me up on a question or you want to
01:00:10.320 take a Bible verse and make it say what you want? I'm not really interested in that. I'm interested
01:00:15.460 in this in the end of the day and i'm not getting any of that from and you know i dealt with jim bob
01:00:20.000 kind of harsh because of that because he approached me in that way you didn't approach me in that way
01:00:24.980 and i was like okay i'd like to talk with alex a little because he you were asking questions and
01:00:28.960 it seemed genuine like you were actually asking me i appreciate that i was genuine it's it's hard
01:00:34.600 to tell you know when you're being yeah i don't blame you yeah yeah especially on online it's just
01:00:39.560 words so like you're reading text and i've already been uh debate raped a couple of times by a couple
01:00:43.920 people so i'm like looking around and i was like wait a second i think i might have misjudged this
01:00:47.380 guy let me let me talk to him a little bit um but yeah why why is that why does that become the
01:00:52.220 culture of the the orthodox the orthodox church or orthodoxy the face of it in general and
01:00:59.100 protestantism has that too i know like that that guy avery is out there debating people and 0.67
01:01:03.660 there's a couple of other people that are just fucking debate um why do you why do you think 0.78
01:01:10.340 that that's taken over and uh do you understand like how it leaves a bad taste in people's mouth 0.88
01:01:16.160 yeah i think there's a bit of an over correction in response to um i think probably what started
01:01:23.300 off in like wokeism and in the universities as like uh you know this political correctness 0.64
01:01:30.600 you can't say the retard word or things like like this uh very like motherly kind of patronizing 0.75
01:01:37.800 uh like talking down to especially with young men and that's why i get this part of the orthodoxy i 0.67
01:01:43.680 get i like that uh that hard nose side of it they're using it against me which is hilarious
01:01:49.080 because like the background that i've come from i'm like yo dog i said let's give it right back
01:01:52.460 yeah yeah i'm not gonna say it back and again at this point because it's like i don't know if you
01:01:56.400 look at my past like i've already done all that and i'm not going to be somebody else's n-word
01:02:00.540 say or just to say it but i'm like okay i see what you're doing here you've uh you've assessed
01:02:05.480 that i have insulted you in a way and now you've crossed the line to a point where you think that
01:02:09.720 i can't cross it i can't meet you yeah it's like jokes on you buddy yeah jokes on you we could all
01:02:14.960 do it but it's like i'm at the point in my life where i'm like i could but why like i'll yeah if
01:02:20.520 if the term is used to like really like a punt deliver a punchline cool but if it's just to say
01:02:25.520 that i'm not going to say it back so i do respect that aspect of of uh i wonder how you guys square
01:02:32.400 that as well like being inside of this uh structured church but then also stepping outside
01:02:38.860 of it to really like you know make a point and i like that i like that idea but i feel like it's
01:02:45.320 just only that idea there's no there you're missing this other side of it you know uh honestly i have
01:02:52.540 literally no disagreement with you at all on that i think uh and jay has said this too also cleave
01:02:58.740 to antiquity i think jim bob alt like numerous times has said that there is no online orthodoxy
01:03:03.900 there's no such thing it doesn't exist orthodoxy is something that you live and that you participate
01:03:10.320 in when you go to you know your local parish and you worship in the divine liturgy and you have a
01:03:14.780 priest or a spiritual father who you talk to him about you know the sins that you're struggling
01:03:19.040 with and you know like a doctor and like a father he'll direct you and like give you maybe sometimes
01:03:24.780 some medicine like hey you need to fast a few more times during the week that way you have
01:03:28.620 more control of your body so that you know when you're tempted to look at something inappropriate
01:03:32.760 online you have the the wherewithal to stop yourself right um so online orthodoxy is really
01:03:39.820 like this is just it's not online orthodoxy it's just a discussion about like dogmatics or church
01:03:45.760 history or theology or something it is something totally separate from what being an orthodox
01:03:52.520 christian is uh saint gregory of nazianzus uh he has like a very high status in our church he has
01:04:00.180 this title the theologian so basically you have to believe his theology and we honor him very highly
01:04:04.880 and he has these like five theological orations uh the first two basically the first two he talks
01:04:12.520 about who shouldn't be doing theology and that you shouldn't be doing theology all the time
01:04:16.620 You should only be like engaging in theology when it's necessary, right? If you have to correct somebody or to correct an enemy of the church, to correct some sort of misconception. And I think that's the attitude that we try to have, too.
01:04:33.580 The thing is, in America today, there are like no Orthodox, like it's a very small percentage of the population, right?
01:04:41.520 So almost every Christian that we're talking to is like, well, they don't really get the Orthodox point of view because it is. 0.76

01:05:32.180 Spreaker, because if you're going to talk to yourself
01:05:34.800 for an hour, you might as well publish it.
01:05:38.020 I mean, a lot of the conclusions on the surface
01:05:41.000 might appear similar to Roman Catholicism.
01:05:43.880 Like a lot of our reasons and the way we get there
01:05:46.420 are like very different.
01:05:47.720 And you'll see even in our conclusions,
01:05:49.140 there are some nuances, right?
01:05:50.640 Like, yes, we believe Mary is sinless,
01:05:53.120 but we do not believe the doctrine
01:05:54.580 of the Immaculate Conception.
01:05:56.200 I think that is actually kind of a dangerous doctrine 1.00
01:05:58.440 that the Roman Catholics have there. 0.96
01:06:00.520 um so we believe in church authority we reject what do you what do you mean by that you don't
01:06:07.000 believe in the immaculate conception how what do you what do you mean yeah so we believe mary is
01:06:12.020 sinless in the sense that she uh did not affirmatively do any sins right so she was
01:06:19.240 able to keep herself from committing sins you see that there are other figures in the bible like
01:06:24.060 says job was blameless before the lord and that noah was righteous right you see in uh some of
01:06:30.160 the Second Temple literature that we see as deuterocanonical books,
01:06:34.700 like the Wisdom of Solomon, the Wisdom of Sirach,
01:06:37.400 they refer to Noah as perfect, even.
01:06:40.940 They say that Enoch was taken up, like that he didn't have sin,
01:06:44.100 he was assumed into heaven.
01:06:46.120 It says in the Gospel of Luke about Elizabeth and Zechariah,
01:06:50.620 the parents of St. John the Baptist,
01:06:52.980 that they kept the law perfectly, right?
01:06:56.220 So we believe that Mary is without sin in that sense,
01:06:59.220 But she's still culpable to the consequences of sin that came into the world because of Adam and Eve's original sin.
01:07:09.680 So the Immaculate Conception says that Mary was born without any original sin and that every single other person has original sin.
01:07:17.920 But she was for this one purpose.
01:07:19.680 She was preserved from original sin.
01:07:22.420 And it's based on this Augustinian doctrine.
01:07:26.200 some people would say it's not augustinian but derived from his theology that a personal guilt
01:07:32.340 is passed on like from generation to generation so we would just say that it's based on a bad
01:07:38.340 view of what sin is uh so we can't accept that doctrine right and there are like a bunch of uh
01:07:45.220 entailments that have to do with that view as well right uh why isn't she preserved from the
01:07:50.800 consequences of adam's sin if she is preserved from the guilt of adam's sin right there it's
01:07:56.020 a bunch of like begging the question that arises with that doctrine so we do have like uh some
01:08:02.580 maybe pedantic differences on these things it's also odd i don't know jesus was born i guess
01:08:07.860 born to a completely perfect mother but then was immediately put in a food a food slop trough
01:08:13.320 yeah yeah so i don't know i don't know about all that and you're sorry please continue i just
01:08:20.080 sorry to cut you off uh you were going we're talking about mary immaculate conception i
01:08:24.860 think you were going somewhere else with that but i forgot all right well now i gotta there were a
01:08:31.740 few things that there were some things that you brought up though like you were talking there
01:08:35.300 were some things i'm taking notes here uh you brought up like marriage and how like some of
01:08:39.620 our priests like after they're ordained that they uh cannot get married um we would say you know we
01:08:46.500 don't ban marriage from anyone we would say that if you want to get married go get married but don't
01:08:50.680 do it after you become a priest it's just too dangerous for a priest to abuse his position
01:08:55.640 and to use that as a way to leverage a woman into into marriage right so we we want to avoid those
01:09:03.360 kinds of situations so as for our bishops that was just a matter of uh at the time uh there's
01:09:11.620 this tendency around i believe it was like the 400s 300s uh bishops that would try to create
01:09:19.280 these like dynastic legacies where they they would try to put in like their kids and their
01:09:24.600 kids after them they try to be like a line of kings or something which is exactly the opposite
01:09:28.580 intention that christ had for leadership of the church that's why he washed the disciples feet
01:09:33.060 like the point was you're not going to be a bunch of little princes prancing around you're going to
01:09:37.040 serve people right so when that started happening the church found it appropriate to just limit it
01:09:43.620 to the monastic order but again that's a canonical like administrative rule so we could change that
01:09:49.180 at any time. So the way those
01:09:51.300 fathers interpreted those
01:09:52.960 requirements, I guess, for
01:09:55.320 elders in the
01:09:57.300 pastoral epistles, St. Paul,
01:09:59.580 was that he has to be the husband
01:10:01.220 of one wife. They interpreted
01:10:03.140 that as
01:10:03.960 a ceiling, not a floor.
01:10:07.720 So you cannot have more than 0.99
01:10:09.300 one wife. 1.00
01:10:11.220 That makes sense. And I
01:10:13.180 will say again, not to 0.99
01:10:15.400 give you more ammo against Protestant
01:10:17.320 churches but that is that is a huge problem like nepotism within there it's like i don't know
01:10:21.240 this guy's a pastor and his kid's a youth pastor here it's like well we'll call it
01:10:25.560 yeah and it's not just qualifications but like is this is this led by because maybe that does
01:10:34.600 happen but you know we've seen a lot i think one of the recent mega pastors just made his wife well
01:10:41.320 he he cheated on one wife then divorced her then got another one and he made her an apostle so it's
01:10:45.960 These are blaring examples. I know. But it also doesn't make orthodoxy look like, you know, look at them.
01:10:53.200 Each church has its own administrative problems, right? Each assembly of believers, they have, like, we're not saying that we're a perfect church by any means.
01:11:02.300 We're just saying that we are the church that Christ founded. That doesn't excuse us from the human element.
01:11:08.020 Whenever you get people together, you're going to see sin, corruption, spiritual warfare against the church.
01:11:14.480 it's just our view of the church is that like yes
01:11:17.180 at times it might get dicey
01:11:19.100 sometimes but over the long term
01:11:20.800 the church will win
01:11:23.340 it can't fail
01:11:24.700 it will always win
01:11:26.240 so that's the promises that we have
01:11:29.280 from Christ and I think from
01:11:30.880 the Old Testament as well of what this
01:11:33.100 fulfillment of the church will look like
01:11:34.580 possibly I don't know
01:11:36.780 I see the church more as like a
01:11:38.540 more decentralized thing but I do
01:11:40.560 understand this idea of
01:11:42.840 like it's it's i'm almost sympathetic to the idea of having a formula for a thing because
01:11:48.740 obviously things get very dicey over centuries of changes and different people coming through and
01:11:54.280 different ages and technology who knows but how do you stop yourself from becoming
01:12:00.340 mcdonald's in a way or it's not just mcdonald's but it's also scale and i guess this is a different
01:12:07.940 conversation, not necessarily attacking any churches, but it's something that I think about
01:12:12.960 a lot as well. Like you want to take a thing as men, we want to take it and we want to grow it.
01:12:18.620 And when we grow it, we have to sacrifice parts of it for it to grow because you have to let it go
01:12:24.160 and you have to delegate to this person. That person is like, well, how do you effectively do
01:12:27.820 that? Especially when we're talking about Jesus Christ, like we're trying to minister a church
01:12:32.780 to the nations let's say orthodoxy did take over how do you grow this in such a in such a fashion
01:12:40.020 that it doesn't go off the hinges which you'll see in protestantism a lot and i i just i don't
01:12:46.880 know i think it's an impossibility but uh i wanted to ask you maybe this kind of does pertain to you
01:12:51.640 do you guys ever have like bible studies with your your friends like your orthodox friends you
01:12:56.240 get together and study stuff and just like talk and maybe say some shit that might be heretical
01:13:01.380 because, you know, we're just figuring it out. 0.93
01:13:05.160 Yes, so at my parish, we do have a weekly Bible study.
01:13:09.940 We're taking a summer break now,
01:13:11.260 but it depends on the parish you go to.
01:13:13.320 Like, I know the Antiochian jurisdiction,
01:13:15.900 they have even, like, a pretty laid-out Sunday school curriculum.
01:13:21.060 I know the Reverend Father of Stephen DeYoung,
01:13:24.580 you know, is a very smart man.
01:13:28.160 Was he the guy on Tucker?
01:13:29.900 Yes, he also was on Tucker.
01:13:31.380 yeah it was he was talking about the nephilim the nephilim yes okay yeah i did i saw parts of
01:13:35.500 that yeah that was interesting you would probably like to have him on the channel actually he probably 0.83
01:13:39.100 wouldn't come on this channel after the shit that i've said but that's well i mean after after this 0.93
01:13:44.060 one maybe we've healed the bridge a little bit but yeah he's like wicked smart when it comes to 0.98
01:13:48.440 second temple period judaism and these apocryphal texts and the deuterocanonical texts uh and yeah
01:13:55.580 he's doing their sunday school curriculum and they have like a new catechism coming out so
01:14:00.100 I think when orthodoxy first arrived in North America, it was really to cater to these ethnic
01:14:05.220 communities that did not have a parish. And, you know, now that they're seeing like they've
01:14:09.360 like settled in, they're realizing the importance of evangelism and, you know, reaching out to
01:14:15.200 their community more instead of just the ethnic immediate community.
01:14:20.180 I see. So within your catechism, within your like the liturgy, is that like a structured thing?
01:14:27.000 does every Orthodox church teach from like the same way, I guess, Judaism would do.

01:15:15.640 Spreaker, because if you're going to talk to yourself for an hour, you might as well
01:15:20.040 publish it.
01:15:21.120 This is a good point.
01:15:22.240 Actually, I wanted to talk about this earlier because you mentioned about these claims that were unchanging.
01:15:28.620 And the claim is, let me clear this up, that in the things that matter, we are unchanging.
01:15:34.760 Of course, on tertiary issues, each bishop will tailor the liturgy in certain ways, but it's always going to have the same fundamental structure, and that is never going to change.
01:15:46.240 We received that structure, you know, we believe from the apostles and that it's an inheritance from how they would worship in the synagogues, right?
01:15:55.700 And some aspects of like temple worship as well, that we believe we inherited that from the apostles.
01:16:00.440 That doesn't change in our views, like those fundamental things.
01:16:03.860 Now, that said, like we have these like call and answer prayers where, you know, the priest will say something like he'll pray for the leaders of the land and then the choir or the people respond, you know, Lord have mercy here.
01:16:18.080 And then they'll go on through that. Like maybe they'll change one. Maybe they'll leave one out.
01:16:21.940 Maybe they'll put another one in. Right. So there are like always these like little changes that are part of this dynamic, small tree, small tea tradition.
01:16:29.920 but the big tea tradition we believe that's like the work of the holy spirit inside the church
01:16:36.440 and that will never change right so that would include the structure of the liturgy uh the dogmas
01:16:42.700 from the ecumenical councils right when when the whole church speaks on something we think like
01:16:47.520 that's that is the holy spirit working through the church and it's just as much god's word as
01:16:52.400 the bible is it's the same spirit informing both of those so uh we believe that the church is like
01:16:59.080 alive today and that you still participate in it and yes there are changes throughout the years but
01:17:04.440 those changes don't affect the substance of our worship and what we believe okay all right that's
01:17:11.080 fair listen man i i'm enjoying the conversation because it has been extremely hostile if i may
01:17:18.520 uh toward these people and i'm like i really have no other choice but to but to be this way it's
01:17:22.840 like almost like a defensive mechanism because you're kind of being ridiculous but i enjoy
01:17:27.880 talking to someone who is explaining these things again i i don't necessarily agree on a lot of uh
01:17:34.680 a lot of the stuff but i i enjoy it i want to ask you me too the uh the art this is what we came
01:17:42.120 down at yeah yeah and it's a little bit tongue-in-cheek uh but i kind of do mean it some of
01:17:48.680 it isn't it's it's just not good and it's it's in the style of something traditional uh traditional
01:17:55.240 eastern art which kind of does look like some weird uh hindu art that i've seen previously as
01:18:01.880 well but like why do they do that why do you keep doing that and then do i have to say that it's good
01:18:09.720 if like structurally it you know the anatomy doesn't work so uh michael garden is a guy who's
01:18:20.840 like studies this pretty in depth uh i've had the privilege to talk to him at length about some of
01:18:25.800 this stuff and the style of art that you see seems to have been derived from like egypt and probably
01:18:32.400 like hellenistic jews around that second temple period uh and that it's a continuation of this
01:18:38.100 iconography that you see in like ancient synagogues uh throughout like mesopotamia and even like syria
01:18:44.580 and turkey uh the style of iconography where you see like there's the famous dura europis synagogue
01:18:50.480 which is like it seems almost tattooed like from head to toe like culvert in art and icons right
01:18:56.300 um so that style of art it was adopted by the early christians and maintained in a way
01:19:02.960 uh to try to maintain the appearance of the apostles and in the sense that even if you read
01:19:08.980 like saint irenaeus like with everything they tried to like mess with it as little as possible
01:19:14.120 tried to maintain everything right so when you see in the byzantine empire that it like kind of
01:19:19.060 maintained this style of art it's from that spirit of like we just we don't want to touch it we don't
01:19:24.640 want to mess with it just like leave it that way and like just just leave it alone right now you
01:19:29.420 see in russia there's like maybe some more realistic uh style of icons uh we would say
01:19:35.540 that's like a western influence right because you will never see in a orthodox church you go in like
01:19:39.900 in the sistine chapel and you go in and you see like naked people all over say what is this you
01:19:45.300 You know, this is, according to anatomy, it's probably a bit more correct than, you know, the stylized art you see from the Byzantine or Orthodox tradition.
01:19:55.900 But for us, it's really, this might sound a little cheesy, but what the icon represents, right?
01:20:01.000 So in the same way, you'd be like, oh, I don't like the style of this Bible.
01:20:05.600 The margins are too small.
01:20:06.840 The paper is too thin.
01:20:08.220 The cover is like whatever.
01:20:09.900 It's just it doesn't look great.
01:20:10.880 I can't read it.
01:20:11.540 The font is too small.
01:20:13.060 You see, it's more about what the icons represent.
01:20:15.060 So like the resurrection icon, it's like Christ, you know, in Hades, like pulling Adam by his wrist, like out of the grave and like pulling Eve out of the grave with a wrist.
01:20:25.060 And it's like it might not meet your sensibilities for like art stylistically, but it's it's what matters is what that represents and what we can learn from it.
01:20:34.240 Right. So there's like a whole theology of icons that we have in the Orthodox Church.
01:20:37.980 There's even heretical icons. You cannot have this icon. This kind of depiction is not how you're supposed to talk about God or the saints or anything. And the way we see all of the saints in their icons is the reason why they're venerable and why we have icons is because of the work of Christ in their life.
01:20:56.760 So ultimately, yes, there's this foreground of we're honoring the saint or there's this biblical story that's depicted or Christ or the mother of God.
01:21:07.980 But at the end of the day, the reason why the saints and the mother of God, they receive our honor and our veneration is because of the work of Christ in them.
01:21:16.980 I get it. Listen, man, I was I was just poking fun and it is kind of hard to defend some of the art.
01:21:21.820 I'm like, this is not, but, uh, yeah, that's a, again, an admission. It's like a little bit of
01:21:27.680 a low blow. Cause I'm like, all right, well, we can, we can go here and we can have a little bit
01:21:32.060 of fun with this. I understand why you do that. And I understand the tradition of drawing it this
01:21:36.980 way. I did again, I don't agree with it. I think it could be a little bit dangerous. Um, and I'm
01:21:42.520 definitely not going to do it. I don't know if, I don't know why, if it's like, maybe it's just
01:21:45.840 not in my culture or something uh something inside of me screams danger when i see a lot of
01:21:53.000 a lot of this stuff actually can i ask you a question this is like a yeah that's why why
01:21:57.920 why is it always like uh this kind of thing with the fingers you know like there's like one in
01:22:03.840 and every single one i've seen it's uh the acronym of christ uh let me look it up it's uh
01:22:12.100 shoot uh basically it's like ik uh something i can't believe i'm blundering on hold on let me
01:22:21.760 look it up real quick that's a good question because there is a meeting behind that no that's
01:22:29.460 fine i did ask uh my friend got married in the greek orthodox church and i asked one of the
01:22:34.900 priests and he like he's like i was like shook me off i was like no i'm asking i was like what's
01:22:39.380 going on with the gang signs
01:22:41.400 we're throwing up here.
01:22:43.560 Yeah, I-C-X-C.
01:22:46.320 So it's a symbol
01:22:47.520 of the name of Christ that they would
01:22:48.920 use in the early church. So Jesus
01:22:51.260 Christ, I think
01:22:53.440 the victor or something
01:22:55.020 refers to
01:22:58.960 it's in Greek. It's an acronym
01:23:01.100 in Greek. But it's
01:23:03.420 just a way to say the name
01:23:05.260 of Christ.
01:23:05.780 yeah okay all right that's that's pretty interesting um i guess yeah that's i i'm i'm
01:23:14.540 sure i have like a ton of other questions but uh that's that's kind of like my my holdups with this
01:23:19.540 and and also maybe i don't know i guess you have a foothold within not a foothold but like
01:23:23.860 a reputation within the orthodox church so maybe you can pass on a little bit about what i've said
01:23:30.620 here because there's something not uh clicking and i guess to drive my point home about uh i guess
01:23:37.800 the ambassadors of the orthodox church because again when i'm looking at this when i'm looking
01:23:44.000 at this this uh thing i'm seeing people like uh tommy tommy sammons he's a like he's the first
01:23:51.760 guy that ever interviewed me for a podcast um buck johnson there's there's a bunch of other guys
01:23:57.220 that, uh, I was in like this, like libertarian movement with them very political and very, uh,
01:24:03.840 yeah, I guess just political kind of like active in like sarcasm and, and, uh, worldly worldly,
01:24:11.580 I'd say, but not, not like, you know, out there doing egregious things, but just very worried
01:24:16.200 about like what's happening in Congress day to day. And around the same time, we all kind of like
01:24:22.100 realize that this is nonsense and there's a lot more going on in the world uh spiritually speaking
01:24:29.420 and maybe we should start looking at that i think uh buck was uh he was an atheist at some point
01:24:35.800 and now he's a he's a devout member of the orthodox church and it's it's weird because
01:24:39.680 i'm like i'm just bang just shooting at you guys and uh it's and then i gotta look to the side and 0.98
01:24:45.580 i know buck is like what the fuck man you know like he's he's probably sad by it and i don't 0.98
01:24:52.020 want to do that to him because i really like him and i really like i see you see a change in some 0.99
01:24:56.600 of these people and like they're it's something that they needed but why do you think that there's
01:25:02.060 a correlation between like the disaffected uh right-wing person possibly like right-wing
01:25:07.960 libertarian pipeline into the orthodox church in in this fashion and they don't it's not necessarily
01:25:14.140 just an orthodox church but it's almost like into the the debate nature of the orthodox just like
01:25:18.340 They come through there and they, I don't know, some of them get like abrasive or weird there.
01:25:24.540 Some of them go, go a little past it and, and settle.
01:25:28.620 I don't know.
01:25:29.360 What, what do you think is going on there?
01:25:31.580 I think you're right that there is a demographic of like disaffected kind of men, maybe in
01:25:39.800 libertarian, maybe even in like the Wignett kind of culture today that, you know, some
01:25:45.600 of them do tend to go towards the orthodox church that is uh uh i think something i've seen they're
01:25:52.680 uh a minority i wouldn't say they're it's like most of them but i would say that it is a key
01:25:58.380 demographic they're a notable demographic it's people that are high in like a trade of organization
01:26:04.860 like order they they desire it and they they end up in orthodoxy now people who yeah i can see that
01:26:11.900 yeah and and i like those type of people i i think that there could be a little bit of a lack
01:26:17.720 of creativity within that that like personality type i'm not that person very type a yeah yeah
01:26:24.780 yeah and and useful for like a lot of things but you need you need all the body of christ to do
01:26:29.600 something so for me i'm like i'm more of a spontaneous guy and i don't necessarily belong
01:26:33.960 to any denomination but i i read the bible every day and i try my best to understand this and try
01:26:39.560 to walk with God. So I'm like, I'm just a little bit, I'm different. This does not fit me.
01:26:43.200 This episode is brought to you by Spreaker, the platform responsible for a rapidly spreading
01:26:47.260 condition known as podcast brain. Symptoms include buying microphones you don't need,
01:26:52.760 explaining RSS feeds to confused relatives, and saying things like, sorry, I can't talk right now.
01:26:57.760 I'm editing audio. If this sounds familiar, you're probably already a podcaster. The good news is
01:27:03.820 Spreaker makes the whole process simple. You record your show, upload it once, and Spreaker
01:27:08.500 distributes it everywhere people listen apple podcasts spotify and about a dozen apps your
01:27:13.340 cousin swears are the next big thing even better spreaker helps you monetize your show with ads
01:27:18.600 meaning your podcast might someday pay for well more microphones start your show today
01:27:24.620 at spreaker.com spreaker because if you're going to talk to yourself for an hour you might as well
01:27:30.860 publish it i would say to that group of young men that of course yes obviously they are welcome in
01:27:37.700 orthodox church but you should not be joining the orthodox church for your politics or you think
01:27:43.460 they have good politics or you like what some of their saints said about race the reason you're
01:27:48.580 joining the orthodox church is because you think christ is there that's why you should be joining
01:27:53.380 the orthodox church is because you want to meet christ and ultimately the church like god transforms
01:28:00.020 you through the church right through your repentance through your confession through like
01:28:04.820 making things right with the people around you and like showing love to the people around you like
01:28:10.900 this is how god works in the world he works through people right he works through things
01:28:15.540 you see it throughout the bible um so i'd say like to that of course they should be welcomed
01:28:21.540 into the church but this is why we have a one-year catechism right so if they're in it for the wrong
01:28:25.300 reason they'll probably drop out at some point because it's a pretty big commitment to make
01:28:29.540 for one year just because you like what somebody said about race realism or politics you know yeah
01:28:37.380 yeah and again that's not a that's like kind of like an argument of like well what about abortion
01:28:42.100 that happens through you know through rape it's like well that's a i'm not i'm not saying that
01:28:46.260 that's everybody but it that that is a little bit of the case just and it's not always the case
01:28:51.140 either like there are people that do come through this political realm and they go into orthodoxy
01:28:55.620 And I look at them and I'm like, I can see a legitimate change in this person. Or you can see there's something about when somebody embodies Christ, when they when they have this light of Christ and when they receive salvation, you can tell it comes off of them.
01:29:08.660 Even if it's like online, you're like, whoa, something different about you, you know, and that certainly does happen. And then there are other people for the wrong.
01:29:15.600 but you know i don't want to i don't want to necessarily focus on that um i guess i'll i'll
01:29:22.920 i'll tell you just one more story and then i want to respect your time and uh get you out here i'd
01:29:27.800 like to talk to you again maybe with my uh my co-hosts are here one of them popped in but he's
01:29:32.180 he's doing some stuff um yeah i'd enjoy that yeah so uh that like how how i met jay dyer and this is
01:29:40.160 a good it's a good example of what happened um and and like why my my disposition toward you guys is
01:29:48.760 uh not friendly so jay i i reached out to him and i'm like hey do you want to come on the show
01:29:55.340 uh because he's you've written multiple books about occult hollywood and conspiracy and like
01:29:59.520 that's right up our lane that's in with the theme of the show yeah sure the show is mostly conspiracy
01:30:04.520 comedy but you know we we actually do have another show called straight bible where me and uh the
01:30:09.540 owner of this coffee shop. He does. He reads the Bible. We break it down. We cross reference
01:30:13.900 scripture. And I'm sure that you'd call it heretical. But we so heretical is sorry, I don't 0.99
01:30:21.420 mean to interrupt, but it's a heretical is a very specific thing. Right. So heretical is like
01:30:25.260 when somebody ought to know better and they're instructed as to what the proper doctrine is,
01:30:31.440 yet they're obstinate about it and they're like prideful in their own intellect and knowledge.
01:30:36.640 So this is what St. Vincent of Laurent says about origin of Alexandria, that he got taken away with his own intellect and pride. He became obstinate to correction and he fell into error. So like the grandma down the street who like doesn't know anything about she's not a heretic. She can't be. She doesn't know anything to the contrary. She's just the misinformed Christian in our view.
01:30:59.980 but so that's a bit of a bunny trail i just i think that's like an important we do even on our 0.70
01:31:04.800 side i think people use it too regularly but it is a weighty term right to call somebody heretic so
01:31:10.300 yeah it's like uh it sounds a little bit like blasphemy i guess the definition of it would
01:31:14.620 be like attributing uh the power of the holy spirit to something else or that's blasphemy
01:31:19.300 against the holy spirit so then that would be knowing exactly what the holy spirit can do and
01:31:24.460 then also knowing to put it on something uh you know i don't know a chris blitzel will do something
01:31:29.060 like this where the holy spirit is now feminine and it's named an ancient goddess from egypt so
01:31:34.280 it's like that's a little bit of uh but again it's no it's not right it's not right but then
01:31:40.480 we also have to question is that an unforgivable sin because you've attributed characteristics of
01:31:46.180 the holy spirit to an entity that probably is the divine feminine some sort of you know ancient evil
01:31:51.680 but do you do that knowingly like i can i can't know a man's heart to know if you you are deceived
01:31:58.420 or are you being deceived?
01:31:59.900 I don't know.
01:32:00.740 I'm sure other people know.
01:32:01.820 But anyway, reach out to Jay Dyer.
01:32:05.220 And I go, we'd love to have you on the show.
01:32:06.960 He says, yes, he signs a Calendly.
01:32:09.180 And then I reach out to him like about,
01:32:11.540 I don't know, a couple of days before.
01:32:13.140 And I go, hey, following up.
01:32:15.260 And I would have followed up with you,
01:32:16.320 but we've been very busy.
01:32:17.500 And I go, following up, making sure we're still good.
01:32:20.620 And he goes, who is this?
01:32:22.740 And I go, it's Top Lobster.
01:32:24.400 Like right under over here,
01:32:25.900 you could scroll up
01:32:26.700 and you can see our messages back and forth.
01:32:28.420 And he goes, I thought you were XG from a tinfoil hat.
01:32:32.560 It's Sam's co-host, Sam Tripoli's co-host.
01:32:35.640 And I go, no, I'm just brown like him, but no, not.
01:32:38.720 This episode is brought to you by Spreaker, the platform responsible for a rapidly spreading

01:32:53.580 I'm editing audio.
01:32:54.480 If this sounds familiar, you're probably already a podcaster.
01:32:58.420 The good news is Spreaker makes the whole process simple.
01:33:01.780 You record your show, upload it once, and Spreaker distributes it everywhere people listen.

01:33:19.620 Start your show today at Spreaker.com.
01:33:22.280 Spreaker, because if you're going to talk to yourself for an hour, you might as well publish it.
01:33:27.180 not that guy and then he goes uh oh like he gets like defensive and then he propositions to debate
01:33:36.400 me and i was like okay on what though like we were going to interview you like the same way i'm
01:33:42.740 talking to you now about your ideas but probably more aimed towards conspiracy hollywood stuff
01:33:47.360 government stuff cia stuff yeah and if you know whatever it gets into orthodoxy yeah we could
01:33:53.220 talk about that too but that's what we do on this show we don't like uh take people and like pin 0.96
01:33:58.320 them to the wall it's not it's not fun for us so and we do this shit every day this is like my main 0.62
01:34:05.620 job so uh yeah this is like i'm not gonna do anything that i don't like to do um and yeah 0.99
01:34:11.440 you propositioned me for a debate and i was like that's gay i'm like what are you talking about
01:34:15.340 you know like either come on or don't or if you're embarrassed that you thought i was somebody else
01:34:19.800 then just tell me no and we don't have to do it and uh it was weird it was tense and then he came
01:34:26.600 on the show and he had a good time and then he came on again i think we had him on three times
01:34:30.320 we had him on three times but i'm like it's interesting that that's how our relationship 0.96
01:34:35.220 started off as a joke but i did show i showed you grace by not being an asshole and telling you like
01:34:42.180 hey you know what the you thought i was someone else like it was it's very strange and then we 0.94
01:34:48.780 you get further into the relationship of uh our well our relationship and then what or whatever
01:34:54.180 orthodoxy is and i'm like i'm seeing a lot of the same attitude from like a lot of these people
01:34:59.240 and i don't know i don't have that attitude we'll have people on we'll talk to other people i'm not
01:35:05.620 going to disrespect you unless we're on twitter that's a lot of fun but yeah if we're going to
01:35:09.580 be like like i said i think that's what twitter is for honestly it's it's not you're not writing 0.57
01:35:14.300 essays back and forth to people right it's like hey i think you're wrong dummy and then you know
01:35:18.940 whatever racial slurs follow exactly can i make a punchy point within 48 characters and maybe a
01:35:24.740 picture and move on with your life yeah um so yeah again so people they get the top lobster mixed up
01:35:30.480 with the the daniel that's going to be on nds and i understand that whatever it's just part of the
01:35:35.580 job but that's how the relationship starts off and then that's how like i still see it continuing
01:35:40.680 with everyone. And I'm like, dude, what's your problem? Like, why are you, why are you behaving
01:35:45.120 in this way? This doesn't look like a way that people, that men of God behave, that people that
01:35:50.680 are followers of Christ behave like, where is the joy coming from you? I don't see that. I see
01:35:55.880 debate. I see wanting to prove somebody wrong for no reason. Is this helping? And again, I guess
01:36:03.820 I'm outside of the Orthodox church, so it doesn't quite matter. But I, it leads me to wonder
01:36:08.780 what damage are you doing here because if i wasn't so firm in my belief and i came up against 0.97
01:36:15.260 the orthodox church in this way i would have been like fuck christianity in general i'm out and 0.95
01:36:20.480 there's a big spirit moving toward that like you know the the anti-jewish movement which i've been 0.82
01:36:25.380 uh culpable of some anti-semitisms myself on twitter like who hasn't at this point i mean who
01:36:33.180 has i've been i've been retweeted by elon musk about it and then yes i saw that yeah wrote me
01:36:38.240 letters and it was fucking crazy oh yeah it's so i i understand that like let's push that to the 0.51
01:36:44.380 side like when people go oh you love the jews i'm like dog you have no idea like i have lost this 0.97
01:36:48.720 this little poster behind me here we lost an entire venue because of the jews oh wow um but 0.94
01:36:54.800 whatever it neither here nor there um i guess i'm just saying like what what are we what are 0.98
01:37:04.060 we missing here what are what's happening with these guys is this debate to debate is it a career
01:37:10.140 it are do they understand like people might necessarily you're going to attract some people
01:37:15.540 but there are some people who are going to go completely away from christ because of how you're
01:37:20.340 behaving and i'm guilty of it too in some form of fashion but it's like where's the accountability
01:37:25.740 here i don't belong to the one true church i'm just a guy that reads the bible so what's happening
01:37:31.140 there i think uh with jay in particular and like you know i i have talked to jay and like we're
01:37:38.840 colleagues we get along just fine like i like him he's only done like good things for me and he's
01:37:43.780 never asked me for anything ever so like i'm not pretending like i i know him so well or something
01:37:48.980 but no and for me as well it's yeah i've we we i've said like crazy shit about him lately and
01:37:53.860 you know saint diarrhea is hilarious but the guy showed up to my event that you know it was a small 0.93
01:38:00.620 event and he actually had diarrhea and he wasn't able to perform but he he showed up man and it's
01:38:05.140 like somebody that makes that physical effort like what you want me to say that you're like a bad
01:38:09.420 like no you you did that so there's that that aspect of him and then there's the other side
01:38:15.880 where I'm like what's happening here here's what I reasonably know about Jay is that uh and he
01:38:23.200 wouldn't talk about this himself because he is not into talking about like personal piety and
01:38:28.480 he makes no uh effort to do so he's like very open about that uh but I reasonably know that he does
01:38:35.820 receive communion regularly he goes to confession regularly uh and that it it appears to me that he
01:38:43.700 was a bit of a reluctant uh apologist in the first place that he was kind of he was always
01:38:49.880 like pursuing this career in geopolitics which he did very in my opinion i think very successfully
01:38:55.100 to you know be on the alex jones show regularly in that way to write for uh you know comedy for
01:39:01.060 sam tripley like to put out numerous books like a successful guy and like sources uh you know
01:39:07.700 up to your neck in in books like probably one of the most well-read guys out there
01:39:11.760 uh but i don't think he saw himself becoming uh like an orthodox apologist none like i mean let's
01:39:19.040 not uh tiptoe around it he is the top orthodox apologist he is the best debater out of all of
01:39:26.240 us um and i think that's probably just like in general like just on youtube in terms of you know
01:39:32.340 rhetoric and substance he might be the best debater uh or at the like arguably at the top
01:39:38.860 uh so i mean yeah he has that jay's a personality he's a comedian uh but i mean he is a debater at
01:39:47.640 the end of the day so he's i don't think he's ever postured himself as uh you know a the pinnacle of
01:39:55.620 moral character or moral improvement uh but i would say what paul said that insofar as jay
01:40:01.900 imitates christ imitate jay insofar as saint paul imitates christ imitate saint paul right
01:40:08.580 So, you know, confessing your sins regularly, repentance.
01:40:12.740 And I mean, I think I have seen it in Jay over the last few years in particular that I think he has softened up on some folks a bit.
01:40:21.400 So we're all works in progress.
01:40:23.580 Oh, that's that's true.
01:40:25.120 And yeah, you know, as far as the comedian thing goes, I'm not going to say he's not a comedian.
01:40:29.620 I think I find him kind of funny sometimes, too.
01:40:32.180 um but when you're delving when you're dealing in comedy uh and you have sacred cows
01:40:39.240 well people are going to touch them that's the nature of the comedy of the idea of it
01:40:45.460 and then when you're also like one of my big uh beefs with them was uh not not him only but like
01:40:51.960 yeah i guess the main three you know like andrew wilson these these guys uh the debate with owen
01:40:59.600 benjamin years ago about the trinity it's like the trinity is a complex subject you're going to
01:41:05.100 debate somebody into believing it you're going to debate a comedian while you hold the title of
01:41:11.260 comedian into believing this abstract thing that like again i think we could we could find multiple
01:41:18.440 ways to justify it through scripture but if somebody's not a bible reader what does that
01:41:22.360 matter this is the thing with debate too i think i've had jay on my on my stream to talk about
01:41:26.920 this to like how he sees debate and i think we're both on the same page that it's like
01:41:30.520 the the people that are actually doing the arguing they have their minds made up already
01:41:35.740 so like what debate is is like this is combat in in my view right good my with my background
01:41:41.640 in litigation it's like the other side is gonna fight for their side no matter what you froze up
01:41:47.180 all right guys we'll give him a second you froze up there for a second you said it's uh combat in
01:41:52.020 your view yeah i mean especially with my background like the other side is gonna they're gonna
01:41:56.860 argue their side no matter what even if they think it's wrong they're gonna argue it right so
01:42:01.280 i kind of go into debates with that mindset too that like look i am convinced of my view i've done
01:42:06.240 the research of it i think it's true the other side they also think that their view is true and
01:42:11.340 if they get persuaded by my arguments great that's like a cherry on top right but i'm not going there
01:42:16.500 primarily with that aim it's mostly the viewers and not even all the viewers because most of the
01:42:21.480 viewers also have their mind made up already there's like a sliver like a sliver of people
01:42:26.200 in the middle that are open to having their minds changed that uh do want to see like how does this
01:42:32.600 view stack up against this view does it stand up to scrutiny uh does this baptist view stand up to
01:42:38.480 this orthodox view like oh how is this orthodox going to defend icons and say that they're
01:42:42.800 apostolic right i want to see that but it is more about like the the viewers and that's why i try to
01:42:49.120 make my debates like educational and substantive and of course like rhetoric is a tool that we use
01:42:54.620 in there but it is like debate needs to be taken as like as a tool it is not the main thing it's
01:43:00.740 just one method of getting out uh you know the arguments for against orthodoxy for against
01:43:06.780 baptists pentecostal atheists whatever you know so it's i i there is a bit of an over emphasis
01:43:13.880 probably and like i said earlier i think it's an over correction to the the sewing circle culture
01:43:19.220 uh that you see in woke left and increasingly in christian circles as well yeah it's a shame i
01:43:26.420 understand the need for it as well it's like uh you have to explain these ideas and they're
01:43:31.360 they're nuanced and they're drawn out and but it but it does just become a point like
01:43:35.380 of diminishing it's a little tiring yeah it's tiring and then what do you do when uh
01:43:40.040 this episode is brought to you by spreaker the platform responsible for a rapidly spreading
01:43:44.440 condition known as podcast brain. Symptoms include buying microphones you don't need,
01:43:49.900 explaining RSS feeds to confused relatives, and saying things like,
01:43:53.400 sorry, I can't talk right now, I'm editing audio.
01:43:56.480 If this sounds familiar, you're probably already a podcaster.
01:44:00.240 The good news is Spreaker makes the whole process simple. You record your show,
01:44:04.260 upload it once, and Spreaker distributes it everywhere people listen. Apple Podcasts,
01:44:08.460 Spotify, and about a dozen apps your cousin swears are the next big thing.
01:44:13.200 Even better, Spreaker helps you monetize your show with ads,
01:44:16.060 meaning your podcast might someday pay for, well, more microphones.
01:44:21.040 Start your show today at Spreaker.com.
01:44:23.660 Spreaker, because if you're going to talk to yourself for an hour,
01:44:27.280 you might as well publish it.
01:44:29.440 I was doing like a comedy show and carving out a path for myself there within comedy, 0.95
01:44:36.100 and then I kind of realized like, oh, shit, man, I don't want to. 0.99
01:44:39.860 That's not me. 0.99
01:44:40.860 It's not the truth.
01:44:41.620 that's part of me but do i have to do that all the time now and and that that's how you become
01:44:47.680 somebody else's n-word sayer you know right they go dance for me daddy like say say the thing that
01:44:53.600 i'm not brave enough to say because you and i'm like i just don't want to do that anymore but i
01:44:57.100 like i so i i'm sympathetic to people who have like put themselves in that position if they feel
01:45:02.020 that way i don't know if they do some people might be very happy to be in that position but that
01:45:07.040 certainly is a thing when you when you're in this sort of business that you can kind of 0.97
01:45:11.840 you know you could uh you can cast yourself as a fucking spider-man and now you're spider-man the 0.96
01:45:16.400 rest of your life tom holland so it's like that's it's it sucks it's rewarding but i think with owen 0.99
01:45:23.080 in particular i think the concern with like jim bob and jay was that you know this debate i think
01:45:28.540 i don't know with jay i'm speculating a bit here so you know give me a little bit of grace but i
01:45:33.880 i suspect it's because they saw his tendency to like re and like you said this is par for the
01:45:40.340 course in comedy it's kind of what you sign up for right understanding that i think they probably
01:45:44.960 reconsidered and said do i want to really be on a platform where this guy is going to like put
01:45:50.720 poop on icons like at least in a depicted way you know because for us like we said if there's the
01:45:57.100 the icon of the harrowing of hades like this is an important doctrine it's the same way
01:46:01.560 desecrating a bible or desecrating an icon like for us there's the same content in each of them
01:46:08.980 right it's telling the story of the incarnation and how god saves the world from spiritual death
01:46:14.780 right so it's probably they just didn't want to give more attention to what we see in the
01:46:21.060 orthodox churches like desecration i okay i understand that said i understand your point
01:46:26.840 that it's par for the course in comedy like it's it's also a huge failure on their part 0.98
01:46:31.620 is what i'm saying and this is what this has been one of my main gripes and i i don't want to keep
01:46:35.920 you too long man but uh i think this is a having a decent time here um the the failure is you don't
01:46:45.000 believe exactly how i believe and you're talking to somebody like owen benjamin who is a good
01:46:49.200 friend of mine i mean this guy again another dude that showed up to my events flew across the the
01:46:53.940 country to come and hang out. And it's been nothing but good to me for probably four years
01:46:58.160 now. And I've had, I have a working relationship where I, yeah, I message him all the time. So
01:47:02.820 it's like, this is like, he's a friend. You've taken somebody like Owen Benjamin, who is a force
01:47:08.260 multiplier, in my opinion, somebody that is a mover of men, okay, can do this. And because
01:47:15.860 he didn't believe exactly the way you wanted him to believe in the timeframe in which you wanted
01:47:19.780 him to believe. Then you lean on debate. And then he leans on comedy. And then you lean on debate
01:47:27.040 more. And then he leans on comedy and he's better. And then you get offended. And then we have to
01:47:32.200 push away. So what has effectively happened is somebody who is a leader of men, and that's not
01:47:38.620 just, you know, I'm not a bear. I'm not a follower of Owen Benjamin. But when I look, there are many
01:47:44.320 of them. And this dude's been canceled and they have their own community. And that community is
01:47:48.760 flourishing. And when I look at Christ and what Christ is doing, and when I look at men who are
01:47:53.500 walking in the way of Christ, they're doing similar things like this. They have family.
01:47:58.300 They have good hearts. They don't partake in, you know, debauchery. They're building things.
01:48:03.480 They have their own land property. They're growing. They're growing. And that's what
01:48:09.500 Owen is doing. So I'm like, man, to have pushed this guy away from orthodoxy, from believing in
01:48:17.480 Christ in general, and then spreading that message to his people, shame on you. What did you do wrong
01:48:24.780 here? And will you learn from it? And the answer is no, you absolutely won't learn from it. It's
01:48:29.540 going to continue and proliferate. The bigger a platform you get, it's not going to stop. It's
01:48:35.340 just going to grow into something uglier. And I'm not in a position to stop them and be like, hey,
01:48:40.320 here's everything wrong with you. Because you could point right back at me, sure, a lot wrong
01:48:44.660 with me but certainly this happened here this happened here you fucked up and now there is no 0.99
01:48:51.680 there's no mending this bridge because you've messed up so badly and then tripled and doubled 1.00
01:48:56.820 down onto the how dare you how dare you with the icon shit it's like all right like you got to 0.99
01:49:01.000 understand this has been a back and forth thing where you debate real hard and then he comedies 0.99
01:49:06.360 real hard and then you get sad about the comedy but then you also can't have comedian in your
01:49:10.820 title. So like, we're working on like, levels of parody here that are, I guess are lost upon most
01:49:18.100 people, but I'm watching and I'm going, what a shame, what a shame for the kingdom of God,
01:49:23.840 not just the people and everyone, maybe people enjoy, yay, we're going to get a debate,
01:49:28.760 they'll spar with words, who cares, like souls that are in the meantime here are being lost
01:49:34.040 and left on the table, whether they're going to again, I guess you'd be happier that they go to
01:49:39.520 orthodox church i'd be happier if they went to christ and i don't know i don't know exactly where
01:49:44.580 that is i think he's omnipotent and it works in strange ways i think we can't define this
01:49:48.760 but that what i can tell you for sure is that that's been squandered and in part by me too 0.96
01:49:53.920 because i'm taking part in the the shit throwing fest you saw online so what do you do what do we 0.91
01:49:59.640 do here how does this get fixed does it get fixed does anybody care i don't know i don't know i would 0.72
01:50:05.560 i would hope for it to get fixed i think on this topic we may just have to agree to disagree on it
01:50:11.360 i think uh yes there is like the uh expanded parody that pushes the limits within comedy
01:50:18.820 and again for us this is something equal to like desecration and i need to equivocate between like
01:50:25.500 as i understand it when it came to the like jim bob and the trinity debate with owen that there
01:50:30.800 was an equivocation between the trinity and like a homosexual relationship and that just those are
01:50:36.900 some lines that for us it's like yes we'll joke and we'll have fun but there are some things that
01:50:42.160 are like that are sacred and i understand that's not the case for owen uh but i i mean it's it's
01:50:49.460 an internal thing on our side it's just we would rather you've also got it you got to understand
01:50:54.360 when you're when you're debating somebody into a corner with uh terms that most people are not
01:50:58.980 familiar with ecumenicalism i had to look that up and honestly most of the terms that are used by
01:51:03.840 the orthodox people i won't look up because i'm like i like we understand what these words mean
01:51:09.120 when i when you phrase them out over three or four words i'm not going to use these pretentious
01:51:12.540 words it's not how i talk and it's going to come off there's a lot of lingo and jargon and theology
01:51:18.140 that's right there's a lot of lingo and i get it you're distilling the huge thoughts into one word
01:51:23.820 but a lot of people and i'm on your side on that i think it's unnecessary most of the time
01:51:28.020 But yeah, it's a very pretentious lingo. Yeah, Jesus didn't talk like that. He spoke pretty clearly. I mean, the message was a bit obscure. You had to think about it sometimes. But like, yeah, the wording was not the phrasing was always simple. Again, not to trash you guys for using that. It's just that's how it comes off. So when you're doing that and you put people in a corner with this kind of stuff. And again, my tool is or Owen's tool is comedy. He's going to punch you back and he's going to punch you way harder.
01:51:55.120 like this is a so you cannot you can't get offended you have to understand what you're 0.84
01:51:59.580 doing here you know and you can't make somebody believe in a triune nature of an eternal being
01:52:05.860 that created the whole world with words like there has to be more there's actions there's
01:52:11.200 there's things that we can do there's patience that we have to have with people to understand
01:52:14.860 this thing and it wasn't shown there and now this is the the fruits of that it's it's just like
01:52:21.560 it's just a shame it's it's it really is but we can't change i think we can agree that overall
01:52:27.700 it is a shame i think they're like competing priorities on on both sides and we do not have
01:52:33.620 the same set of priorities so like for us like that's what i mean is that like for us like
01:52:38.460 the icons are like uh they are the the means by which the seen and the unseen are connected
01:52:45.680 right it's it's a form of that right it's hebrews 8 where it says that the things that you saw in
01:52:50.900 the tabernacle that's what moses saw on the mountain and that everything in the tabernacle
01:52:55.460 corresponds to that spiritual reality right the symbols are like a connection yeah but everything
01:53:00.280 in the tabernacle was also built to perfect specifications as above so below again just to
01:53:06.820 make fun of the art a little bit it was like i don't know the arms don't really connect
01:53:09.560 so but but i i understand what you're saying i understand what you're saying yeah for us it's a
01:53:13.500 it's a priority for us that for you guys it's not a priority so that's like probably one of the
01:53:18.020 factors of why it ended up this way is that if competing priorities there are some things that
01:53:23.540 we hold sacred that you got not you but i'm just saying like owen's side they think it's okay to
01:53:28.680 profane these things or to desecrate these things i just it's just uh this how else was it gonna go
01:53:35.740 it almost seems inevitable in hindsight it almost seems inevitable that you know owen's gonna do his
01:53:40.780 comedy thing and you know the things that we think are like sacred he's gonna desecrate them and uh
01:53:47.940 we're gonna do the debate that like you said we're gonna do the debate thing and we're just
01:53:51.940 gonna okay what's your substantive claim oh then you know it'll just end up in a bit of a stalemate
01:53:56.580 which is it seems like that's where it is it's uh i don't it doesn't seem like a stalemate it
01:54:01.760 seems like it's it's kind of an embarrassment on jay's part he's challenged him to a debate and
01:54:06.420 then asked him for a roast and then ran away from it you asked for a roast too you asked for a roast
01:54:13.420 from our side
01:54:15.580 like again
01:54:17.440 like we have different priorities right so
01:54:19.500 from our shoes it's an embarrassment
01:54:21.200 on Owen that you know his instead of
01:54:23.620 discussing the substance of the
01:54:25.500 like what actually is the point that issue
01:54:27.540 like what actually is the disagreement
01:54:29.240 that he's going to go and make it about you know this
01:54:31.640 like poop thing
01:54:32.560 yeah I know it's fine
01:54:35.660 it's just you know I'm just
01:54:37.460 baffled by what you got what you asked for
01:54:39.420 like you asked the guy to roll around and 1.00
01:54:41.520 shit with him and he rolled around and shit with you 1.00
01:54:43.080 you got dirty so you know i don't know i think i think people we need to go back to the table 1.00
01:54:47.860 because i don't hate you guys i really do love a lot of these a lot of the orthodox people man
01:54:52.480 i just there's some differences i don't really care what you think about my salvation but we
01:54:57.420 love you too stop it stop it it's been a fun conversation man it was a lot longer than i
01:55:03.780 expected to to keep you here um but uh could you tell the people as we wrap it up just tell them
