00:00:48.980Welcome back to another episode of Straight Bible, Sermon on the Mount, episode 26.
00:00:54.100We're still in Matthew 6, 22 through 24.
00:00:57.080We're going to pull that up real quick just so we can all be on the same page with that.
00:01:01.460And then we're going to unpack some of these passages, some of these cross-references through the scripture that tie into this concept of not serving God and mammon.
00:04:05.120One year later, Keter-Lammer and his ally, I'm just doing the best to pronounce that0.99
00:04:09.140to, and his allies arrived and defeated the Rephaites at Ashtaroth Karnaim, the Zuzites0.77
00:04:15.040at Ham, the Emites at Shabbath Kiriath Jadim, and the Horites at Mount Zaire, as far as
00:04:20.620El Paran, at the edge of the wilderness.0.97
00:04:23.520Then they turned back and came to En Mishpat, now called Kadesh, and conquered all the territory0.97
00:04:29.800of the Amalekites and also the Amorites living in Hazan Tamar.0.91
00:04:34.500Then the rebel kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Adma, Zeboim, and Bila, also called Zoar, prepared for battle in the Valley of the Dead Sea.
00:04:43.620We're going to catch up here in a minute.
00:04:46.000They fought against King Keterolamar of Elam, King Tidal of Goyim, King Avraphel of Babylonia, and King Ariok of Elessar, four kings against five.
00:04:54.960As it happened, the Valley of the Dead Sea was filled with tar pits, and as the army of the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some fell into the tar pits.
00:05:02.620while the rest escaped into the mountains the victorious invaders then plundered sodom and
00:05:07.880gomorrah and headed for home taking with them all the spoils of war and the food supplies
00:05:13.060they also captured lot abram's nephew who lived in sodom and carried off everything he owned so
00:05:18.960i know that was long-winded but you got to have like the backdrop of what's happening it's these
00:05:22.500four kings went to war against five kings so it's it's completely you know you got nine nations
00:05:28.440involved at this point uh and lot gets carried away so watch the dude abraham watch this but
00:05:35.640one of lots men escaped and reported everything to abram the hebrew who was living near the oak
00:05:40.760grove belonging to mammer the amorite mammer and his relatives eskel and aner were abram's allies
00:05:47.560so these are just his buddies right this is all that's saying when abram heard that his nephew
00:05:52.280lot had been captured he mobilized the 318 trained men who had been born in his household
00:05:58.440so abraham's just got 318 trained servants in his household like ready to go to war that's a
00:06:06.320that's a large militia bro ready to go to war with four or five nations is that wild he's got
00:06:13.300318 like clearly trained on another level warriors but that's what we were talking about
00:06:18.800with james just before where you were saying like we're like talking about the power of the church
00:06:23.640was that okay you were talking about the power of the church like that true church right well
00:06:32.240the truth i mean just the power of christians in general this dude's swinging around 318
00:06:36.18018 soldiers just just for no reason dude just he's just ready he had it yeah he's just ready so
00:06:42.060so these kings come against him take away lot who's basically like his son he treats him like
00:06:46.440a son it's his nephew but he treats him like his own child and so he he takes his 318 trained men

00:21:03.160he's operating through a captain in the army of syria and god is giving deliverance into syria
00:21:11.960through this captain think how wild this is right and some of this is against israel i know a lot
00:21:19.040of people aren't ready for this but this is god operating through a uh worldly captain dare i say
00:21:25.700a goyim right through the goy he's operating through them and some of his purposes are against
00:21:33.060israel watch this lord had given deliverance into syria he was also a mighty man in valor0.97
00:21:39.060but he was a leper so it's very interesting like god used him but he didn't heal him
00:21:44.420yet yet he's a leper and the syrians had gone out by companies and had brought away captive
00:21:51.700out of the land of israel a little maid and she waited on naaman's wife0.97
00:21:57.460so god's operating to this captain in the syrian army and they're actually capturing israelites
00:22:03.060that wild yeah and had brought away captive out of the land of israel a little maid and she waited
00:22:08.020on naaman's wife and she said unto her mistress would god my lord were with the prophet that is0.90
00:22:13.460in samaria for he would recover him of his leprosy and one went in and told his lord saying thus and
00:22:19.140thus said the maid that is of the land of israel so the so the maid that's been caught captive
00:22:24.580says man you know naaman he could be healed he could be healed of his leprosy if he could just
00:22:30.020get after uh the prophet that's in samaria who's elisha and the king of syria said go go to
00:22:40.820this is weird it says go to go the king of syria said go to go and i will send a letter
00:22:46.660out to the king of israel and he departed and took with him 10 talents of silver and 6 000
00:22:51.860pieces of gold and 10 changes of raiment so he's expecting this is going to cost money right that's
00:22:57.540That's a lot of money looking for healing.
00:22:59.060And he's expecting that there's going to have to be some money exchanged in this transaction for his health.
00:23:05.320And he brought the letter to the king of Israel saying, now, when this letter has come unto thee, behold, I have therewith sent Naaman, my servant to thee, that you may recover him of his leprosy.
00:26:42.260I mean, it's like a reasonable thought in the natural realm.
00:26:44.400He thought he's getting took by some false prophet.
00:26:46.340He's not really sure what to expect, but there's probably all kind of shenanigans going on with the so-called prophets.
00:26:51.820And so he's just kind of in turmoil now.
00:26:55.360Thank goodness for one of his servants, though.
00:26:56.900And his servants came near and spoke unto him and said, my father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, would you not have done it?
00:27:04.940How much rather than when he say it to thee, wash and be clean.
00:32:24.720Jamie Walden was like, hey, man, listen, if you're approaching God through this with like a pure heart, with your intention aimed at God, they could have done whatever they wanted.

00:58:33.300to talk to yourself for an hour you might as well publish it and soul was cons was consenting unto
00:58:40.140his death that stephen's death okay and at the time there was great persecution against the church
00:58:45.640which was at Jerusalem and they were all scattered abroad throughout the
00:58:49.160regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.
00:58:52.980So that church that was told to go to Jerusalem, Samaria, Judea,
00:58:58.460the uttermost parts of the earth, they didn't leave. They didn't leave,
00:59:01.900but then there was persecution and then that scattered them abroad.
00:59:05.860So they at least went to Judea and Samaria by that time,
00:59:09.360but they were scattered abroad. But the, but the apostles stayed in Jerusalem,
00:59:14.100him, which is just wild. This is a bigger story to unpack. It's like they weren't really supposed
00:59:18.720to stay there. They were told to go. And devout men carried Stephen to his burial and made great
00:59:25.020lamentation over him. As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering into every house and
00:59:29.860inhaling men and women committed them to prison. Therefore, they that were scattered abroad went
00:59:35.940everywhere preaching the word. Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ
00:59:41.060unto them. He didn't preach like doctrine or theories or concepts or whatever. He just preached
00:59:48.520Christ. There's a thought. Right. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which
00:59:55.560Philip spoke, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. This is very much what James is
01:00:00.820keying in on. For unclean spirits crying with loud voice came out of many that were possessed with
01:00:06.320them and many taken with palsies and that were lame were healed and there was great joy in that
01:00:12.580city but there was a certain man called simon which before time in the same city used sorcery
01:00:18.200and bewitched the people of samaria giving out that himself was some great one you know what
01:00:24.100this wasn't even recorded this conversation with james this was after okay it's crazy right so
01:00:31.400what the the people that watch the watch these shows don't know how much is said before and
01:00:36.300after show sometimes it's like man i wish that was recorded but after the show was crazy way
01:00:41.540crazier than the show anyway go ahead continue to whom they all gave heed from the least to the
01:00:48.440greatest saying this man is the great power of god so that sorcery word uh isn't like i think
01:00:53.700sorcery is sometimes pharmakia is that i don't know i'm gonna mix up but this one's not it's
01:00:57.780like magio which i think is like a magic so he's like uh he's like tricking people through magic
01:01:03.380he's got him bewitched which is like astonished um it's not the same bewitched from the galatian
01:01:09.240letter that's a different greek word the the magic term when you're talking about pharmakie
01:01:14.920you're talking about like chemical substance that could fundamentally change your your brain
01:01:19.020chemistry when you're talking about magic this is also what we're talking about with james we're
01:01:22.320talking about like uh slight of slight of hand yeah a card trick kind of astonishing people with
01:01:27.060it he's doing that tricks just yeah parlor tricks yeah to whom they all gave heed from the least of0.99
01:01:32.540the greatest saying this man is the great power of god he had them all duped all the black people
01:01:36.740ran away and to him they had regard because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries0.92
01:01:42.480but when they believed philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of god in the name of jesus
01:01:48.740christ they were baptized both men and women then simon himself believed also the scripture says
01:01:55.940Simon believed also. And when he was baptized, he continued with Philip and wondered, beholding the
01:02:03.160miracles and signs which were done. So he's drawn to the supernatural, right? Like he's drawn to it,
01:02:09.140but curiosity isn't enough. Now, when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had
01:02:17.660received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John. This is intriguing and sparks
01:02:22.100debates within the church so so they so they've already believed they've received the word of god
01:02:27.300they've been baptized in jesus name heard that samaria received the word of god they sent unto
01:02:35.060them peter and john who when they were come down prayed for them that they might receive the holy
01:02:39.700ghost so there's a process there's like levels to this levels you could say yeah they're baptized
01:02:46.820but what this is saying is they had not received the holy ghost so in this case not in every case
01:02:53.620uh peter and john are sent that they may receive the holy ghost for as yet he was fallen upon none
01:03:01.220of them only they were baptized in the name of the lord jesus why do you think that is why do
01:03:06.180you think that the holy ghost has not fallen upon these people that have discovered the church and
01:03:10.500and the gospel of jesus christ like does this does the holy ghost have to be delivered like
01:03:17.940or explained to the people like they don't even have a concept of this idea or
01:03:21.780why is that i don't think it's that and i and i think like in this case it says
01:03:25.860like in this next verse it says then laid they their hands on them and they received the holy
01:03:30.020ghost but like if you look at peter when he preaches in cornelia's house he doesn't lay
01:03:34.180hands on him he's just preaching and the holy ghost falls on them and they say
01:03:37.540which is another intriguing thing here they're baptized in water and then through the laying
01:03:43.420on of hands they receive the holy ghost in cornelia's house peter's just preaching and
01:03:48.860they receive the holy ghost then they're baptized in water like it's two different things man and so
01:03:54.680it does seem like there's a there's a reception of the holy spirit in the salvation process i'm
01:04:02.400not saying like when you go in the water that that happens i'm not saying that i'm saying that
01:04:06.500Like all these things are connected, but there's a point where like you do receive the Holy Spirit.
01:04:10.960And to my view, through stories like this, it looks like there's something more to the fullness of the Holy Spirit than just receiving the Holy Spirit initially.
01:04:19.680And I think the language of the Bible and talks about being filled with the Spirit or baptized with the Spirit, it's talking about overflow of the Holy Spirit.
01:04:27.580It's not just talking about like receiving a measure of the Spirit, but actually receiving a measure so much that you're overflowing, that there's a fullness of the Holy Ghost.
01:04:36.500which i know this gets into like crazy and then people like oh he's in that camp or he must be in
01:04:40.340this camp like i i don't know i'm just saying study the scripture like they were baptized
01:04:44.900they had the joy of the lord that that's like a fruit of the spirit so it looks like you know
01:04:48.820they had joy they believed all this language is of people who have already received salvation
01:04:53.540and they still say we had to send peter and john so that they'll receive the holy ghost
01:04:59.620so take that however you want but then laid they their hands on them and they received the holy
01:05:04.740ghost and when simon saw that through laying on of the apostles hands the holy ghost was given
01:05:10.900he offered them money though this is a physical tangible act that you can
01:05:16.200same idea with uh i mean it is a physical tangible act they're laying hands and people
01:05:21.960are receiving the holy ghost yeah but it's not one that's transactionary like you can't sell me that
01:05:27.020right it's it's not from you do you think anybody in church history has said oh you can
01:05:32.380and let me get my jacket and smack you with it real quick you see what i'm saying i mean like
01:05:36.840we have all these examples man yeah and when simon saw that through laying on of the apostles
01:05:41.540hands the holy ghost was given he offered them money saying give me also this power that on
01:05:46.400whomsoever i lay hands he may receive the holy ghost so he didn't just want it that like he would
01:05:52.360receive it but that he could distribute it uh-huh give me also this power that on whomsoever i lay
01:05:58.920hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, thy money perish with thee because
01:06:04.580you have thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Dude, do people still
01:06:10.200think this is like a relevant statement? Peter said unto him, thy money perish with thee because
01:06:17.320you have thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. So the gift of God is
01:06:22.520not purchasable with money did he condemn him to hell basically is that what that means i don't
01:06:29.540think so because if you're i mean you don't you're not going to perish if you have everlasting life
01:06:34.040but if your your money's going to perish no matter i mean it's a fair question i don't i don't think
01:06:38.660so but i see how you could take it that way like your money die with you that's what it sounds like
01:06:42.580a curse in a way but it might not be i don't know well it's strong language no matter what he didn't
01:06:47.460say oh that's okay brother just come watch the show with me on sunday everything will be okay
01:06:51.640he definitely gave him strong language because he loved him right peter said unto him thy money
01:06:57.080perish with thee because you thought that the gift of god may be purchased with money that gives him
01:07:01.240some counsel you have neither part nor a lot in this matter because your heart is not right in
01:07:05.880the sight of god so this is a dude who believed and is baptized but his heart is not right in the
01:07:11.400sight of god i i don't know that's a curious thing dude would we would we say that today
01:07:17.320They always say, yeah, yeah, I'll take the money.
01:17:04.320That's what he's saying here, because he had done wisely.
01:17:06.780For the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.
01:17:10.620And I say unto you, here's what he says to do with mammon.
01:17:14.080Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness, that when you fail, they0.68
01:17:18.340may receive you into everlasting habitations.
01:17:22.260He's saying like, yeah, you come across money, man, use it in the natural realm.
01:17:26.240make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness that when you fail they may
01:17:30.760receive you into everlasting habitations use it in such a way that in eternity it's going to matter
01:17:36.080that those people when you see them in eternity they're like my man that was cool down there that
01:17:41.220was cool we were doing down there don't use it just for selfish gain don't use it because you
01:17:45.360serve it and you're trying to store it up use it for friendship use it for good use it to further
01:17:51.060Sure. The kingdom of God. Yeah. He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much.
01:18:00.560That's a big statement, man. Right. He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much like the Bible talks about like money, monetary gain, mammon in the earth as being least like a very low thing.
01:18:13.880he that is faithful now which is least is faithful also in much and he that is unjust in the least
01:18:19.540is unjust also in much like whatever you are you are that you know the people who are like oh if i
01:18:25.600had all this money i would do this this this and this you say okay well let me see your life right
01:18:29.140now like what are you what are you doing with your money that you have right now okay well don't assume
01:18:33.060if you had way more you would be doing this that and the other right whatever you have whatever
01:18:37.580you do when you have little that's what you'll do with more it's just the way it works if therefore
01:18:43.420you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon who will commit to your trust the true
01:18:48.220riches that's a wild statement and if you have not been faithful in that which is another man's
01:18:55.900who shall give you that which is your own talking about eternal stuff man like if i can't trust you
01:19:02.380with this stuff on the earth that doesn't last forever how can i trust you with riches that
01:19:07.020last forever what are the promise of the saints that they're they're going to like
01:19:10.140like, help rule over New Jerusalem, like, you're going to get that, but you can't be responsible
01:19:15.800for $20? You're going to judge angels? Like, yeah, yeah. You think I can trust you to judge
01:19:19.120angels? Like, in the Corinthian letter, it says that they're taking each other to court.
01:19:23.440It says, you guys are going to a worldly court, like, suing each other, and you're in the church?
01:19:28.080And I think that's the context where he says, do you not know you'll judge angels? Like,
01:19:31.640if I can't trust you with, like, dealings amongst yourselves, how are you going to be
01:19:35.880trusted in eternal things. This is always the lesson in all of this. It's like, hey,
01:19:40.800manage your life in such a way that honors eternity, that you could be trusted in eternity.
01:19:47.120Think bigger. Yeah. If therefore you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon,
01:19:52.380who will commit to your trust to true riches? Because mammon's not true riches.
01:19:56.820And if you have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which
01:20:00.540is your own? No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other,
01:20:05.420or else he will hold to the one and despise the other you cannot serve god and mammon
01:20:12.140all right maybe we wrap this up with a blue letter bible search on the word uh covetous can we do
01:20:17.100that yeah and then we'll just pull it up in the in the new testament whatever that greek word
01:20:22.620greek word is and see what it says and the reason i want to do that at the end here is just that um
01:20:26.860the word covet covetous c-o-v-e-t-o-u-s covetous because on this section to me the way i see this
01:20:37.880like this matthew 6 um what is it 19 through 24 we've been unpacking uh has to do with being
01:20:47.280covetous over money we're going to go into the next section next week which is actually shouldn't
01:20:51.980take as long as this section uh but it goes matthew 6 25 through 34 when we get into that
01:20:57.820it's going to talk about not being anxious for money this section i feel like is saying like
01:21:01.200don't be covetous for money and then the next section is saying like don't be anxious for money
01:21:05.880so we'll unpack that next week but this is what it looks like if you look at the word
01:21:10.000covetous which is which is what all this kind of revolves around
01:21:13.640if we can go full screen uh so the transliteration is bossa botswa the pronunciation
01:21:25.440all right and look at look at these definite look at how it's translated right here
01:21:29.720uh it's translated as gained given greedy covetous covetous cut finish fulfilled
01:21:37.980get performed and wounded these are all the different ways that that word
01:21:42.000um wait hold on can you did you put in covetous c-o-v-e-t-o-u-s yeah that's all the different
01:21:50.200ways it popped up and what was the what was the um did it give you a word that you were able to
01:21:55.700click on that brought all that up hold on yeah the covetous right h 12 14 okay basa this is right
01:22:50.820It says, and the Pharisees also who were covetous heard all these things and they derided him.
01:22:55.580So after Jesus is explaining all this stuff about faithfulness with mammon, the Pharisees are listening to it and they're pissed.
01:23:02.620So if we pull up that word covetous in Luke 16, 14, I think that's going to give us a more fuller understanding of like what Jesus is talking about.
