00:00:25.560 What's going on today, men? My name is Ryan Michler,
00:00:27.780 and I am the host and founder of Order of Men.
00:00:29.800 And, as always, I want to welcome you to the show today.
00:00:31.940 This is our Friday show. It's a short show of my ramblings each and every week.
00:00:35.340 And, these shows typically last between five to eight minutes, but today's is a little bit longer.
00:00:39.880 If you're interested now in our full show, make sure you subscribe to iTunes
00:00:43.560 or wherever you get your fix of podcasts so you never miss our Friday episode or our Tuesday show.
00:00:48.240 And, during our interview shows on Tuesday, we have conversations with some of the world's most successful people.
00:00:53.780 We've got Navy SEAL Jocko Willink, Art of Manliness as Brett McKay, Art of Charms, Jordan Harbinger,
00:00:59.680 Seal Fitz, Mark Devine, Spartan Race's Joe DeSena, just to name a few.
00:01:03.660 Now, today, I want to cover a topic that is near and dear to my heart.
00:01:07.460 It's books.
00:01:08.300 If you've followed me and Order of Man for any amount of time, you know that I am an avid reader.
00:01:13.200 I try to read between 40 to 50 books per year because I know how valuable new information is.
00:01:19.580 So, today, I want to share with you 10 books that every single man should read by the end of the year.
00:01:23.980 Now, let me put out this disclaimer.
00:01:25.960 These are my non-fiction book recommendations.
00:01:28.480 Without fail, whenever I give a book list, someone always wants to tell me that I don't have any fiction books on the list.
00:01:33.900 That's correct because, again, this is my non-fiction book list.
00:01:38.080 Now, a couple of resources that you need to be aware of before we get started, before I share with you these 10 resources,
00:01:42.960 is that I put an article out a couple of months ago about speed reading.
00:01:46.700 The tips I share in the article are the strategies and the tactics that I use to get through those 40 to 50 books every single year.
00:01:53.240 So, if you're interested in reading a little bit faster and also comprehending that information, go to orderofman.com slash speedread.
00:02:00.840 Second, if you want to gain access to all of the books that I mentioned today, head to orderofman.com slash FFN014.
00:02:09.540 As in Friday Field Notes 014.
00:02:12.400 All the links and the book recommendations that I mentioned today will be there.
00:02:16.540 And also, the links to interviews with a few of the authors of some of these books.
00:02:21.100 All right, with that said, let's just dive into this.
00:02:24.640 Now, these aren't in any particular order.
00:02:26.540 They're in the order that I pulled them off the bookshelf.
00:02:28.600 So, the first one is The War of Art.
00:02:31.440 You heard that right.
00:02:32.080 The War of Art by Steven Pressfield.
00:02:34.740 This is a great read for anybody in the creative space.
00:02:37.640 If you're creating art, whether that's content on a podcast or a blog or a social media outlet, or you're an artist,
00:02:43.660 or even if you're offering services of some kind, you will want to dig into this book.
00:02:48.100 It's a super quick read, and Steven digs into the mental obstacles and hurdles that get in the way of our success.
00:02:55.620 And he refers to it as the resistance, which you may have heard me say before.
00:02:59.380 So, if you've ever bumped up against some barriers, again, the resistance in your work,
00:03:03.260 this book will show you how to overcome those.
00:03:06.520 Next is Resilience by Eric Greitens.
00:03:09.140 Eric Greitens is a retired Navy SEAL.
00:03:11.260 The book is actually written in an interesting format.
00:03:13.700 Essentially, it's the correspondence between him and a SEAL brother who's struggling adapting to civilian life after time served in the SEALs.
00:03:21.580 Now, I never personally experienced the struggle that he talks about in the book after my time in the military,
00:03:26.760 but I do know that this is something a lot of veterans deal with after tours and deployments.
00:03:31.800 But the book isn't just for veterans.
00:03:33.540 It's for anyone who's ever experienced hardship in their life and needs some help in overcoming it.
00:03:39.520 So, check that out.
00:03:40.620 The next one, Ego is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday.
00:03:43.440 This is a follow-up book to Ryan's incredible book, which I'm sure you've heard of and read, The Obstacle is the Way.
00:03:49.240 In Ego is the Enemy, Ryan teaches us why our egos are probably the single biggest hindrance to our success
00:03:55.600 and, more importantly, how we can remove or at least to a minimum reduce our egos.
00:04:00.140 So, he shares with us how we have a tendency to be our own worst enemy
00:04:02.860 and why the alternative to ego and pride, which is humility, is a better approach to life.
00:04:08.120 If you are interested, you can check out one of our highest downloaded podcast interviews
00:04:12.100 with Ryan Holiday at orderofman.com slash 065.
00:04:17.740 Now, the next book, Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin.
00:04:22.300 If you've listened to me for any amount of time, you know that I recommend this book
00:04:26.540 as probably my favorite business, leadership, and self-development book.
00:04:31.520 I had an incredible interview with Jocko Willink.
00:04:33.440 That interview can be found at orderofman.com slash 060 about this book.
00:04:39.060 The retired Navy SEAL commander of Task Unit Bruiser, Jocko Willink, and Leif Babin
00:04:42.920 extract the lessons they've learned from the battlefield in Ramadi, Iraq,
00:04:46.400 and coincidentally, we had some overlap of deployments.
00:04:49.600 They were getting to Ramadi as I was leaving, but if you pick one book from this list,
00:04:54.360 this is probably the one that you should read.
00:04:56.120 People are going to help you stop making excuses and take full ownership of every single element
00:05:02.040 of your life.
00:05:03.540 Next, The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone.
00:05:06.400 If you're not following Grant Cardone, you should be.
00:05:08.760 This man is all about thinking big, like 10X big.
00:05:12.060 In this book, Grant talks about why thinking big, bigger than you've ever thought before,
00:05:17.240 is the key to massive success in your life.
00:05:19.220 He teaches us it's going to take bigger goals, bigger risk, more resources, more energy,
00:05:23.380 and more time to create the life that we really want.
00:05:26.560 So if you know in your life you need to think bigger than where you are right now, this
00:05:30.060 is the book that you want to read.
00:05:31.780 Next, The One Thing by Gary Keller.
00:05:34.600 Gary Keller has created, if you're not familiar with him, an incredible real estate force to
00:05:39.680 be reckoned with.
00:05:40.560 And in this book, he shares with us some strategies for focusing on the things that are extremely,
00:05:45.860 extremely important to help us accomplish big things in our life.
00:05:48.460 I recommend this book all the time, guys.
00:05:50.660 And I use the lessons every single day in my daily and my weekly planning, which if you're
00:05:56.940 interested in those, can be found at orderofman.com slash battle plan.
00:06:01.220 The next book is The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg.
00:06:05.440 Every single one of us knows creating and actually sticking to habits is the key to success.
00:06:10.620 But how many of us can actually say that we do it?
00:06:12.720 Or at least to the degree that we should.
00:06:14.240 In The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg shares with us the formula for creating any new habit
00:06:20.040 in our lives and how we can actually reprogram our brains to stick with these new habits that
00:06:25.740 we want to implement.
00:06:26.660 So make sure you check it out.
00:06:27.900 The next book, Mansfield Book of Manly Men by Stephen Mansfield.
00:06:31.360 This is a great book on what it means to be a man.
00:06:34.020 And this is a question that I've been trying to answer for the past year and a half.
00:06:37.260 But in this book, Stephen Mansfield breaks down what it actually means to be a man using
00:06:41.560 four manly maxims he's identified every man should be living by.
00:06:45.060 And he also breaks down some key virtues that we should strive to live by as well.
00:06:49.260 So if you're interested in checking out my interview with Stephen Mansfield,
00:06:52.400 you can find that interview at orderofman.com slash 038.
00:06:56.120 I'm actually curious to listen to that one myself as it was done quite a bit ago.
00:07:00.360 So I'm wondering how far I've come since then.
00:07:02.340 But if you've ever struggled with a question of what it means to be a man and how you can
00:07:05.660 be more of a man, Stephen is going to answer that for you.
00:07:08.800 Now, the next book is Relentless by Tim Grover.
00:07:11.800 Guys, this is a no nonsense.
00:07:13.280 It's a powerful book.
00:07:14.280 It's written by Tim Grover, who is the trainer to the likes of Michael Jordan, Dwayne Wade,
00:07:19.020 Charles Barkley, Kobe Bryant, a ton more.
00:07:21.520 Tim gets in your face about what it will take to help you succeed on a massive level in every
00:07:26.920 area of your life.
00:07:27.720 I really enjoyed getting to peek inside the training regimen and requirements of some of
00:07:30.800 the world's best athletes.
00:07:32.640 And he also does a great job of sharing with the reader how those lessons actually transfer
00:07:37.520 over into the lives of an everyday guy like you and me.
00:07:39.740 So this book is not for the faint of heart or the easily offended.
00:07:43.580 And then the last book, guys, that I want to share with you, number 10, again, not in any
00:07:47.060 order, is The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod.
00:07:50.460 For those of you who have listened to me, you know that I am a huge proponent of planning
00:07:54.680 out your day.
00:07:55.740 The bottom line is that unless you plan out your day, you're never going to succeed at
00:08:00.260 the level you desire.
00:08:01.000 So Hal Elrod, the author of The Miracle Morning, breaks down the science of a perfect start
00:08:05.620 to your day, how you can eliminate the things that are keeping you from starting the day
00:08:09.900 off right, and how to make the most, again, of every single day.
00:08:13.080 I did an interview with Hal, and it is, guys, the single highest download episode to date.
00:08:18.560 So you'll want to check it out at orderofman.com slash 070.
00:08:22.580 So there you have it.
00:08:23.620 My book recommendations for the remainder of 2016.
00:08:26.800 Let me just break these down again real quick for you.
00:08:28.600 The War of Art by Steven Pressfield, Resilience by Eric Greitens, Ego is the Enemy by Ryan
00:08:33.900 Holiday, Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin, The 10x Rule by Grant Cardone,

00:08:45.000 Men by Steven Mansfield, Relentless by Tim Grover, and The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod.
00:08:51.120 Make sure you buy these books, guys.
00:08:52.580 Make sure you read these books.
00:08:53.620 Make sure you implement their teachings in your life because knowledge is only power when it
00:08:58.140 is applied.
00:08:59.100 So again, you can go to orderofman.com slash FFN014 for the links to the interviews I mentioned
00:09:07.080 and access also to the books so you can buy them yourselves.
00:09:09.880 Last thing, guys, if you're interested in exploring these concepts further, you do need
00:09:13.560 to consider joining the Iron Council.
00:09:14.920 This is a group of men all working together to help each other succeed.
00:09:18.220 Next week, we're going to be implementing what I refer to as our 12-week battle plan where
00:09:22.440 we're going to lay out our objectives over the next 12 weeks, identify the tactics to
00:09:26.740 meet them, and then hold each other accountable in success.
00:09:29.620 So you can learn more at orderofman.com slash Iron Council, and I hope to see you there.
00:09:34.160 In the meantime, guys, take action this week and live manfully.
00:09:38.140 Those are your Friday Field Notes.
