00:00:17.240 you are. This is who you will become. At the end of the day, and after all is said and done,
00:00:22.800 you can call yourself a man. Gentlemen, what is going on today? My name is Ryan Michler,
00:00:28.000 and I am the host and founder of this podcast, The Order of Man. This is a show dedicated to
00:00:33.720 reclaiming what it means to be a man. To that end, we interview the world's most successful men.

00:00:47.040 your Friday field notes. Also, just to put a little bug in your ear, I'm excited about this. We are
00:00:52.120 going to be launching a third show each and every week where we'll be interviewing some of my
00:00:56.580 brothers inside the Iron Council. These are ordinary guys like you and me doing some extraordinary
00:01:01.200 things to produce big results in our lives. We're going to be calling that show In the Trenches.
00:01:06.240 So look out for that in the coming weeks, in the coming months. Now, today, I wanted to share with
00:01:09.700 you a little bit about the power of a code of conduct for the way in which you operate in your
00:01:14.400 life. This is actually an excerpt from my new book coming out in February. It's titled Sovereignty,
00:01:19.580 The Battle for the Hearts and Minds of Men. If you are interested in knowing when it's available,
00:01:23.260 head to orderofman.com book. Guys, I can't even begin to describe how excited I am to get this book
00:01:30.060 in your hands. It's been a bit of an emotional roller coaster completing it, and we're only two
00:01:35.520 weeks away or so from making it available to you. In it, I cover the battle all of us as men are
00:01:40.880 fighting, the mission we have in being here, the code of conduct in which we ought to consider adhering
00:01:46.200 to in our lives, and a very, very specific planning strategy called the battle plan, which will help
00:01:51.460 you produce big results in your life. Again, you can head to orderofman.com book to be notified when
00:01:56.820 it's available. In the meantime, guys, again, here is a quick excerpt of the book regarding the code
00:02:01.440 of conduct. Part three, the code of conduct. In matters of style, swim with the current. In matters
00:02:10.080 of principle, stand like a rock. Thomas Jefferson. Every great society and every great movement agrees
00:02:16.680 to adhere to a set of rules and a set of guidelines, a code of conduct, if you will. Romans adhered to
00:02:22.740 romanatas or mas maiorum, which means the custom of the ancestors. Although this code was unwritten,
00:02:30.180 these models, practices, and traditions shaped much of Roman behavior. Among the personal virtues Roman
00:02:35.680 aspired to live up to were mercy, dignity, tenacity, frugality, industriousness, and truthfulness.
00:02:41.680 Among the public virtues Romans strived to adhere to were abundance, equity, prosperity, confidence,
00:02:47.980 justice, and freedom. Dating back even further, 1754 BC, we find the code of Hammurabi from the
00:02:54.500 ancient Babylonian people. This code of 282 laws can be found on seven and a half feet tall stone
00:03:00.320 monuments and covers everything from slander to trade to slavery and theft to the duties of workers
00:03:06.100 and divorce. Christians adhere to the Ten Commandments. Members of the medical community swear to uphold the
00:03:11.340 Hippocratic Oath. Warriors of every nation and every time period have all lived up to a code,
00:03:15.840 from the Spartan army's code of honor and discipline to medieval knight's code of chivalry to the
00:03:20.220 Japanese samurai's Bushido, or way of the warrior. When I joined the military, I was expected to
00:03:25.180 memorize the code of the United States Fighting Force, which illustrated the way we as soldiers were
00:03:29.660 to conduct ourselves on the battlefield and in captivity. Even pirates adhered to a code, which came to
00:03:35.720 be known as the Articles of Agreement. The pirates' article of agreement covered everything from
00:03:40.140 discipline, to division of stolen items, to desertion, to the hierarchy of the ship's commanding
00:03:45.080 crew. Too many men live their lives without a personal code of conduct for the way they will
00:03:49.340 conduct themselves in any given situation, in any given environment. Consider, for example, the man
00:03:54.080 who steps out on his wife. In hindsight, and after the excitement has died down, he will justify his
00:03:59.040 actions because he has temporarily lost himself. He forgot who he was. He let the heat of the moment
00:04:04.440 get to him. I've heard men balk at the notion of a code of conduct. Many men believe the idea
00:04:09.140 that living to a set of self-imposed guidelines somehow places unnecessary restrictions on them.
00:04:14.640 On the surface, this makes sense. Rules, regulations, and guidelines are, by definition,
00:04:19.480 restrictive. But I'd have you consider that the healthy, constructive guidelines we establish
00:04:23.820 enable us to live fuller, richer lives than living free from the burden of these limitations.
00:04:30.020 Take, for example, the man who decides to consume whatever food, drinks, and substances he feels
00:04:34.340 so inclined to consume in any given moment. Does this man not increase the chance of developing a
00:04:39.340 crippling medical condition, decreasing his standard of living, and or shortening his years? Which is
00:04:45.120 worse, imposing a set of standards on yourself or suffering the consequence of doing whatever the
00:04:50.540 hell you feel like? In part three, we break down the sovereign man's code of conduct. We looked at
00:04:56.040 the what in part two, the mission. Now we're going to uncover the how. It is through the 13 virtues we
00:05:02.060 highlight that you maximize your ability to live a sovereign life and effectively carry out your
00:05:06.960 mission to protect, provide, and preside. In addition to the code we cover, you will also learn
00:05:12.100 the mindset required to master each virtue. And where most books end with information, we encourage
00:05:17.820 you to use this section as a field manual for your day-to-day operations. For this reason, we've also
00:05:23.260 included a set of skills that you will be challenged to engage in on your journey to become the master
00:05:27.800 of your heart and mind. My journey from rock bottom to what has become the best days of my life has
00:05:33.060 been a long, slow process. I've had my share of ups and downs along the way. These 13 virtues have been
00:05:40.100 my guiding compass to keep me on the narrow path of the sovereign man. Gentlemen, there again is just
00:05:47.440 a short snippet from the book on operating and living by a code of conduct. I hope that you enjoyed
00:05:52.620 that brief section. If you want to know when the book is available, head to orderofman.com book where
00:05:58.280 you can download the introductory chapter and sign up to be notified when the book goes live. Again,
00:06:03.580 I can't wait to get this in your hands. I know it's going to change lives and it's been such a rewarding
00:06:07.320 process for me to go through. I'm excited to finally put this thing into action. Thanks for being here with
00:06:13.540 me today, gentlemen. This movement would not be nearly what it is today without you tuning in each
00:06:18.080 and every week and sharing the message of the order. Until next week, take action and become the man you
00:06:23.820 are meant to be. Thank you for listening to the Order of Man podcast. You're ready to take charge of
00:06:29.420 your life and be more of the man you were meant to be. We invite you to join the order at orderofman.com.
