Transcript

00:00:00.000 You're a man of action. You live life to the fullest. Embrace your fears and boldly chart your own path.
00:00:06.040 When life knocks you down, you get back up one more time. Every time.
00:00:10.500 You are not easily deterred or defeated. Rugged. Resilient. Strong.
00:00:15.500 This is your life. This is who you are. This is who you will become.
00:00:19.760 At the end of the day, and after all is said and done, you can call yourself a man.
00:00:25.320 Gentlemen, what is going on today? My name is Ryan Michler, and I am the host and the founder of this podcast, The Order of Man.
00:00:31.680 You just stumbled upon, whether you've been here forever or just getting started, the greatest podcast in the world of podcasting for men.
00:00:39.860 We are interviewing the world's most successful men, from athletes to warriors to scholars to entrepreneurs and business owners, fathers, husbands, you name it.
00:00:48.400 If they're doing good and big things in their lives, we are interviewing those men.
00:00:52.240 We are breaking down their skills and their strategies and their resources and their tactics, the things that they're doing in their lives to enhance their lives, of course, and the lives of those that they care about.
00:01:03.260 So we are delivering that stuff straight to you directly through this podcast.
00:01:07.680 I'm glad that you're here and you're joining us.
00:01:09.420 Now, this show is our Friday Field Notes.
00:01:11.460 It's a little bit different than our interview shows because you get to listen to me.
00:01:14.800 You get to listen to me ramble and basically just talk about some of the things that I've been thinking about from throughout the week.
00:01:21.760 And I've got a good one lined up for you today on the subject of makers and takers.
00:01:26.760 But I've got a couple of quick announcements before I get into the meat of the conversation.
00:01:30.620 The first thing I wanted to share with you is that this show is sponsored by The Order of Man store.
00:01:35.920 I know it's a little different because usually we have a podcast sponsor.
00:01:38.900 We're not going to be doing that so much because I'd rather focus on what we're doing here than talking about other products that may or may not be relevant to you.
00:01:46.600 So I know it's a little cliche to talk about this show being sponsored by The Order of Man store, but I thought what a great way to support the show.
00:01:54.960 If you've got any value or insight or anything from this podcast that is enhanced and improved your life, that's a great way to support the show.
00:02:02.740 It's also a great way to look good.
00:02:04.600 We've got hats, patches, shirts.
00:02:06.620 We've got a lot of stuff over there.
00:02:07.620 So if you go to store.orderofman.com, you can pick up some merchandise from our store.
00:02:13.360 And we actually just came out with a new Curve Brim FlexFit hat.
00:02:17.540 I know a lot of you guys have been requesting that.
00:02:19.580 So that's in the store as of just a couple of days ago.
00:02:22.100 So check it out again, store.orderofman.com.
00:02:24.860 Now, the other announcement is our live experience.
00:02:28.520 This is a three and a half day event.
00:02:30.900 And it's not like an event that you would normally see where you go into a conference center and people talk at you for two days straight.
00:02:36.200 This is a lot different.
00:02:37.760 This is very engaged.
00:02:38.880 It's very focused.
00:02:40.300 Now, there's a lot of physical activities, mental, emotional challenges.
00:02:43.340 You're going to be teamed up with seven other men and you're going to be put against some other teams, three other teams specifically in completing some objectives and some tactics and some strategies that are going to help you create a new framework, create a new foundation for life.
00:02:58.360 This is our third time doing the uprising event.
00:03:01.440 We've done it twice before.
00:03:02.600 And each time has been an amazing, amazing experience.
00:03:05.740 And we've got some new activities.
00:03:07.260 And I really don't get too much into the activities that we do.
00:03:10.540 The element of surprise is an element of the experience itself.
00:03:14.120 So if you are interested, I was looking at it this morning.
00:03:16.900 I think we've got six, maybe seven spots left.
00:03:20.960 So not very many spots.
00:03:22.300 It's May 3rd through the 6th, 2018.
00:03:25.280 May 3rd through the 6th, 2018.
00:03:26.920 It's a great experience for you or a friend.
00:03:30.920 Come with a friend.
00:03:32.060 Maybe you've got your husband because I know there are some women who listen to this show who wants to go.
00:03:37.120 This would be a great gift for him or even perhaps a son or a relative of some sort.
00:03:41.880 But anyways, check it out.
00:03:42.840 May 3rd through the 6th, 2018.
00:03:45.380 Orderofman.com slash uprising.
00:03:48.220 Again, orderofman.com slash uprising.
00:03:50.800 Guys, that's all I have as far as announcements go for you today.
00:03:53.700 I want to jump into this conversation and it's that of makers and takers.
00:03:59.020 I mean, there's really two types of people in this world from my experience, makers and takers.
00:04:04.860 And the reality is, is that we've all been probably a bit of both in our lives.
00:04:08.560 I know I have, but I think more and more, I'm really seeing a pendulum swing in society from most of society being makers to now most of society being takers.
00:04:20.680 It's not sustainable, guys, and it's not healthy.
00:04:23.240 And frankly, I don't believe it's manly.
00:04:25.380 So today, I thought I'd share why being a maker is not only your job and my job as a man, but it's much more profitable.
00:04:32.940 It's a much more fulfilling way to live.
00:04:35.360 And then I'm also going to share with you five very practical tips or mindsets for turning yourself into more of a maker and why you'll want to do that.
00:04:44.880 But look, at the end of the day, it's easy to see why a lot of people believe that being a taker is going to produce results in their lives.
00:04:53.480 And it actually will.
00:04:54.520 That's the challenge.
00:04:55.740 Being a taker will produce results in your life, but it's for a very, very short period of time.
00:05:01.500 Because when you're a taker, your results, those results typically come at the expense of other people.
00:05:09.140 But being a maker is about cooperation.
00:05:13.140 It's about cooperation with other people to create environments where every one of you wins, not just one party.
00:05:20.240 When you create scenarios in which everyone wins, it's much more sustainable over long periods of time because it leverages your efforts from just you now to an army of motivated advocates for you.
00:05:36.040 So if you take this movement, for example, with Order of Man and more specifically, even this podcast, I do this for free.
00:05:41.980 I don't get paid to podcast.
00:05:44.100 I've never asked you to pay me to deliver this information to you.
00:05:47.380 Sure, we've got programs and offerings like I mentioned earlier with the store and the experience and the things that we're doing.
00:05:53.060 But the value you get here in the words that I share is free.
00:05:57.500 It's free and it's accessible to everyone.
00:06:00.080 There's no barrier to entry here.
00:06:02.040 What this has done in turn has created a movement that millions and millions of men are not only proud to support, but also proud to share with other men in their lives that they know.
00:06:13.980 And this is just one small example of how making, being a maker, inevitably turns into taking.
00:06:20.780 And I want to be very clear on this.
00:06:22.240 Making, which I think is synonymous with producing results in your life, should not come at your own expense.
00:06:28.960 There's a point in which making becomes unhealthy.
00:06:32.860 We recognize this when we see the perennial nice guy who lets himself become the victim to everything and everyone else.
00:06:40.580 There is a point in time where you will take and we all do a little bit of both.
00:06:45.980 But I'm not necessarily advocating for being a maker simply so you can be a taker at some point.
00:06:51.920 Sure, it often plays out that way, but that's just a natural byproduct of producing more in your life.
00:06:56.920 Quite honestly, it just feels good to give to other people.
00:07:00.520 Why?
00:07:01.440 Because we're hardwired to do it.
00:07:03.600 Think about our tagline.
00:07:04.560 It's protect, provide, and preside.
00:07:06.660 And all three of those roles have an element of service, which is making, giving.
00:07:12.560 So yes, being a maker will help you win.
00:07:15.160 But guys, as I said before, it's also, it's our job.
00:07:17.900 So on that note, I want to break down five tips, five strategies, mindsets that you can incorporate to be a more effective, a better maker in your life.
00:07:26.960 Number one is to be optimistic.
00:07:29.960 If you're going to be negative, and negativity is all around us, but if you're going to be negative about every situation, you are more likely to be a taker.
00:07:37.900 You're more likely to believe that the world is somehow inherently bad or that everyone is out to get you.
00:07:44.680 And you know people like this.
00:07:45.760 You might even be this type of person.
00:07:47.500 I don't believe that's the case at all.
00:07:49.100 I believe that people are inherently good and that most people are moral and ethical and probably want very much the same things that I want out of life.
00:07:58.720 It's a good relationship, a little money in the bank account, a thriving career, some memorable experiences.
00:08:05.120 And because I believe this to be true, I can see a bit of myself in every single person that I meet.
00:08:11.520 I want people to win.
00:08:13.300 I believe they can win.
00:08:15.200 And if I can help them do that, you better believe I'm going to do that.
00:08:19.240 And you know what?
00:08:19.800 I'm willing to give people the benefit of the doubt because of it.
00:08:23.580 Every once in a while, I might get it wrong, but it's never served me poorly to give to other people abundantly and to be optimistic about the opportunities that I have and the opportunities that this world creates.
00:08:36.560 And along those same lines is point number two, which is scarcity versus abundance.
00:08:41.640 I believe that you can have one of those two mindsets, scarcity or abundance.
00:08:46.760 Those with a scarcity mindset tend to believe the pie is finite.
00:08:51.120 And then if I am going to win, it has to come at the expense of someone else.
00:08:55.880 They believe, for example, that the rich only get richer at the expense of the poor.
00:09:00.920 And they live their lives believing they have to get theirs, get what's theirs before anyone else or there won't be any left.
00:09:08.120 And those with an abundance mindset, they believe there is no pie, that there is more than enough to go around.
00:09:14.960 And because they know there's more than enough to go around, they can share freely of their resources.
00:09:20.980 They know they won't run out of that which they give to others because there's no tank.
00:09:25.000 There's no tank that holds happiness and opportunity and connections, innovation, ideas that once depleted will be gone.
00:09:34.680 It's like sustainable energy.
00:09:36.960 These things cannot be depleted.
00:09:39.100 In fact, the more that you give, the more you create.
00:09:42.640 So it's in your best interest to create, to give, to produce.
00:09:46.880 This is a natural principle.
00:09:48.200 And then in addition to being optimistic and of an abundance mindset is point number three.
00:09:53.880 Makers are constantly, guys, looking for ways to create win-win scenarios, win-win situations.
00:10:00.540 This isn't a negotiation necessarily, but an opportunity to make sure success for one does not come at the expense of the other.
00:10:09.980 I think those with the taker mindset see a very, very limited set of solutions to problems.
00:10:15.220 But a maker sees more than black and white.
00:10:18.200 He sees the middle ground, the unconventional, the unorthodox maybe even, those solutions to some of the world's biggest problems.
00:10:27.000 And because he sees the world through that lens, he becomes a person who has the ability to get the job done.
00:10:33.640 His reputation grows, his relationship thrives, his businesses explode.
00:10:38.660 From the outside, others will probably wonder in amazement at all this guy's been able to accomplish and just chalk it up to the quote-unquote X factor.
00:10:48.820 When all the while, it was simply this man's ability to see a solution others failed to see.
00:10:54.660 To see a way that we could create win-win situations.
00:10:59.100 And that actually leads nicely into point number four.
00:11:03.600 Looking for creative solutions.
00:11:05.160 I have a lot of people who will ask me how we've been able to rise to the top of a very, very crowded marketplace.
00:11:12.300 The answer is simple, guys.
00:11:14.540 Be creative when it comes to helping other people win.
00:11:18.340 I want people to win.
00:11:19.340 I said that earlier.
00:11:20.020 I want you to get information from this podcast that will change your life for the better.
00:11:25.080 I want my guests to sell their books and their courses.
00:11:28.640 I want men to step up more fully into their lives as fathers and husbands, business owners, community leaders.
00:11:34.460 I've said that over and over and over again.
00:11:36.920 And because I want that so much, I spend time.
00:11:40.660 I have the capacity to spend time thinking creatively about how I can help others accomplish the things they want in their lives.
00:11:48.440 And here's one of the best parts.
00:11:50.680 When I do this, when I am creative and helping people win, I make myself indispensable in their lives.
00:11:58.600 Everyone can come up with the same regurgitated solutions.
00:12:02.380 But if you can craft creative solutions to problems others may not even recognize they have,
00:12:07.640 you will cement yourself as someone others need in their lives.
00:12:13.020 And that's the power of being creative.
00:12:15.300 And guys, I saved the last point, number five for last.
00:12:17.520 Because without this final strategy, nothing else I talked about really even matters.
00:12:23.500 You have to be in this game for the long haul.
00:12:26.000 I have talked about this before.
00:12:27.600 If you haven't fully committed to being a maker in every environment in which you find yourself,
00:12:34.300 you are not going to win long term.
00:12:37.720 Let that sink in.
00:12:38.740 If you aren't fully committed to being a maker in every single scenario that you find yourself in,
00:12:45.420 you will not win long term.
00:12:49.020 Sure, you're going to secure some short term gains, but they won't last because you didn't do it the right way.
00:12:55.460 Usually, what I found is that when somebody is in it for the short term,
00:12:58.540 they'll jeopardize their principles because they know they'll be out soon.
00:13:02.720 So they have to get while the getting's good.
00:13:05.720 If you want to win for a very, very long time,
00:13:09.660 plant your flag now and know that things will work out in everyone's favor when you focus on being around forever.
00:13:17.040 You can't lie and cheat and steal and manipulate and coerce because there's nowhere to hide when you plan on being around indefinitely.
00:13:27.680 Man, I know there's a lot more solutions and mindsets to living as a maker than what I've shared with you today,
00:13:34.340 but I wanted to get the conversation started.
00:13:37.160 But I want to hear from you now.
00:13:38.880 What are your best tips for becoming more of a maker in your life and the lives of those that you care about?
00:13:44.560 Well, this stuff isn't always easy,
00:13:46.540 especially when you're working to overcome mindsets that have been indoctrinated into you since childhood.
00:13:51.800 But with a little thought and a lot of effort along the way,
00:13:55.320 you can become someone who gives more than he takes and have the honor of calling yourself a man because that is our job.
00:14:02.620 That's what we do.
00:14:03.740 So guys, with that said, let me give you a couple of quick announcements once again as we wind down.
00:14:08.420 The one I wanted to share with you most is the uprising experience.
00:14:11.400 That's that three and a half day experience in the mountains of Southern Utah.
00:14:14.560 We're going to be shooting.
00:14:15.720 We're going to be doing some self-defense stuff.
00:14:17.460 We're going to be having firesides every night.
00:14:19.240 We're going to be teaching you about communication and leadership and team development.
00:14:23.340 All of the things that I think go into becoming a more effective man in the walls of your home and in your business,
00:14:29.780 your community, every facet of life.
00:14:32.260 So those dates are May 3rd through the 6th, 2018.
00:14:36.520 And you can go to orderofman.com slash uprising.
00:14:39.860 So I'll sign out for today.
00:14:41.760 Remember the five tips to becoming more of a maker in your life.
00:14:44.680 Be optimistic.
00:14:46.080 Subscribe to the abundance versus scarcity mentality.
00:14:49.320 Create win-win situations for people.
00:14:51.480 Be creative in your solutions to help others win.
00:14:53.980 And plant your flag.
00:14:54.960 Be in this for the long game.
00:14:57.160 Until then, guys, take action.
00:14:58.840 Become a maker.
00:14:59.900 And become the man you are meant to be.
00:15:02.280 Thank you for listening to the Order of Man podcast.
00:15:05.300 If you're ready to take charge of your life and be more of the man you were meant to be,
00:15:09.300 we invite you to join the order at orderofman.com.
00:15:12.420 Thank you.
00:15:17.180 Thank you.
00:15:18.020 Thank you.
00:15:18.240 Thank you.
00:15:19.280 Thank you.
00:15:19.780 We'll see you next time.
00:15:20.020 Bye-bye.
00:15:24.700 Bye-bye.
