00:00:00.360 Hiding in the gym or at the office.
00:00:03.520 The reason it's insidious is because it's very deceptive.
00:00:06.960 You going to the gym is a good thing,
00:00:08.640 but you can go to the gym and you can see guys
00:00:11.120 who are just absolutely shredded,
00:00:13.240 ripped, bulging muscles, shredded.
00:00:16.060 They look fit as they could possibly be.
00:00:18.680 And then you might get to know some of those guys
00:00:20.400 and realize, man, this guy's home life is a wreck.
00:00:23.720 And what a lot of guys will do is they'll hide.
00:00:25.920 And I don't know what your gym is or what your office is,
00:00:28.180 but they'll hide behind something that is noble in order to not do the real work that needs to
00:00:35.340 be done on themselves. Hey, what's up guys? Uh, last week on the Friday field notes, I talked
00:00:42.060 about 10 ways that self care, self work actually looks like for men. And I've got my phone pulled
00:00:48.460 up here cause I wanted to do a recap for you. Uh, but if you want more details on this, go to last
00:00:54.020 week's Friday Field Notes and check it out. But let me just recap these because today I'm going
00:00:59.380 to talk with you about 10 things or ways self-care does not look like. So we need to know both. But
00:01:07.180 let's talk about what it looks like first. This is what I talked about last week. Waking up with
00:01:11.480 intention, training your mind, body, and soul, reading for application, joining a brotherhood
00:01:17.000 of men, tracking your budget, being present in the house, owning your mistakes, processing your
00:01:23.920 emotions properly, living by a standard and a code, and doing difficult things with purpose
00:01:30.240 and intention. Today, like I said, I want to talk with you about what self-development,
00:01:35.460 what self-care, what self-work does not look like. And I only want to bring that up,
00:01:40.360 not because I want to focus on the negative, but because it's important that we don't deceive
00:01:45.840 ourselves as men into thinking that we're actually doing self-work when we're not really
00:01:50.860 moving the needle at all. Uh, it's a little bit like the term I've heard and used as mental
00:01:57.220 masturbation. Ultimately, you know, it feels good, but at the end of the day, it doesn't get the job 0.89
00:02:01.760 done. So we have to avoid that. So let's just break it down. We'll get into it as fast as
00:02:07.020 possible and write these things down. And, and also ask yourself if you're engaged in any of
00:02:12.160 this behavior and, uh, and it's, it's no longer serving you or, or if it's never served you,
00:02:18.760 these are things to just be on the lookout for. So the first one that I often see is buying a
00:02:25.120 course or a program that you don't use. I don't know what it is, but I've seen literally thousands
00:02:30.760 of men buy programs, buy courses, go to events, go to conferences, joining brotherhoods. And they
00:02:37.860 think that just because they join all of their wildest dreams are going to come true. And I think
00:02:43.160 we do that because it feels like we're checking something off the list. If you've listened to this
00:02:47.540 podcast for any amount of time, you know how often I talk about joining a brotherhood like
00:02:52.340 our iron council. Um, but it is interesting. It's fascinating to me how many men will join
00:02:59.260 our brotherhood and think that just because they joined, they're going to see the benefits or the
00:03:03.820 results. Of course you won't. So I'd rather you save your money and not by the next course,
00:03:09.000 not by the next program, not by the next ticket to the conference that you're going to do
00:03:13.680 nothing about. Save your money, pay off debt, invest, do something better with it. But if you
00:03:19.660 are going to buy a course, then like I said last week, do it with intention. Be involved with
00:03:25.440 intention. The money you spend on the investment of that course or that program is basically the
00:03:32.080 ticket to entry. What you do inside the course is what matters. All right. Number two, I see a lot
00:03:37.140 of people do is either doom scrolling or posting on social media. And you might think that these
00:03:44.860 things are obvious, but they're not. I mean, how many of us, myself included, will get stuck in
00:03:49.860 the rabbit hole of social media where we're just posting, posting, posting, telling everybody how
00:03:55.660 great or wonderful or what the new exciting thing is for us. Or we'll follow all the right accounts.
00:04:02.240 we'll follow all the accounts that we're supposed to be motivated by and inspired by
00:04:06.400 and getting inspiration from we're going to look at memes we're going to post memes
00:04:10.900 we're going to look at clever quotes and then again do nothing with that information
00:04:15.860 guys your your self-work is not found on this device now there might be some things that you
00:04:22.400 can find that lead to inspiring action but at the end of the day if all you're doing is dinking
00:04:27.900 around on your phone looking for inspiration or giving inspiration hopefully to other people
00:04:32.900 you're not actually doing self-work and in many ways it could actually harm you because we start
00:04:38.080 to fall into comparison trap and we get into the endless amount of time that we could spend on
00:04:43.740 these devices that are engineered to keep us trapped and trapped and stuck on those devices
00:04:48.620 all right next is waiting until you're ready look if it were this simple or this easy i should say
00:04:56.220 to identify what, what you're doing that's not serving you, we wouldn't do it. So there's
00:05:02.260 something more at play here. And we, we usually don't say, well, you know, I'm waiting till I'm
00:05:07.380 ready. People don't usually say that. What they usually say is they say, well, I'm in, I'm in
00:05:12.720 research phase. I'm in research mode. Uh, you know, I'm being thoughtful. I'm being articulate
00:05:19.160 about it. I'm weighing my options. These are the things that people say, but really what they're
00:05:24.580 doing is they're waiting until someday they're procrastinating they're waiting until they're
00:05:29.520 ready and look sometimes yeah you need more information before you make a decision i'm not
00:05:34.700 saying we should all be rash and not make prudent choices but if you're being honest with yourself
00:05:40.620 you can say hopefully that you are procrastinating you don't need more research you don't need more
00:05:46.960 information you don't need to compile or collect more data what you need to do is do the thing
00:05:52.400 you said you're going to do. I mean, think about it with the gym even. How many guys have you seen
00:05:57.960 who will just research diet nutrition or research the best workouts and research the dynamics and
00:06:04.500 the physiology of the muscles and bones and what's best and what's worse and why this is going to
00:06:09.300 hurt, but why this is good for you. I mean, people do that all the time and then they never go to the
00:06:14.380 gym or they never go to the grocery store and get better food. Stop doing that. Stop waiting until
00:06:20.780 you're ready. Just be ready now and get involved in whatever it is you're going to get involved
00:06:25.780 with. Another thing that I often see, and again, it's not as blatant as I'm saying it right now,
00:06:31.400 but I want you to understand and recognize your excuses for what they are, is that we often blame
00:06:36.540 other people for our woes. The reason that I am this way is because of fill in the blank.
00:06:42.340 A lot of guys will do this even with their parents. They'll sit in therapy sessions
00:06:45.760 and and and complain about how their parents ruined them and ruined their childhood but these
00:06:51.420 are 45 50 year old plus men who yeah sure maybe there's some history there maybe that's part of
00:06:58.580 the the equation but you're a grown man and you now blaming how you're performing or underperforming
00:07:05.800 on your parents or the reason that your finances are in a mess is because the economy or because
00:07:13.460 your boss doesn't give you a promotion or you know fill in the blank with whatever excuse you come up
00:07:18.480 with is nothing more than that it's just an excuse the minute you start taking responsibility for your
00:07:24.960 actions and for your circumstances is the minute you can start doing something about it now the
00:07:30.820 reason i think that we don't often look at ourselves as often as we look at other people
00:07:37.780 for our problems is because if I can blame it on somebody else, then I don't have to do anything,
00:07:43.560 right? I can simultaneously give myself a pass not to work because if my success or lack thereof
00:07:52.040 is in the hands of somebody else, I just have to wait until they change. And as you know,
00:07:57.880 people don't often change. Circumstances don't often change unless there's some force,
00:08:03.260 the first law of physics, right? Unless some force is actively working against it,
00:08:07.360 that should be you. You should be the force working on, working against, working for,
00:08:13.660 working towards whatever it is that you're trying to accomplish. But we don't do that.
00:08:19.000 We don't take responsibility because if it's my responsibility, then that also means it's
00:08:24.220 my responsibility to do something about it. And that's not as easy as saying it's someone else's
00:08:28.700 responsibility. Another one that I often see is going out of alone. This is a big ego flex I see
00:08:34.340 a lot of guys, you know, I don't, I don't need anybody else. I'm an alpha, even if they don't
00:08:38.440 use that verbiage, which is a little bit ridiculous, but I'm an alpha. I don't, I don't
00:08:42.360 need any help. I don't, I can't rely on anybody else. If I want it done, I have to do it right.
00:08:46.860 And I have to do it myself. Nobody can do it as good as me. I can't trust anybody. I can't rely
00:08:52.080 on other people. I mean, what, what an inferior way to live. Now, look, I know that if you have
00:08:58.860 relationships with others, that they are going to let you down and you are going to be disappointed
00:09:03.780 And potentially, in some cases, you're going to be hurt or you're going to be taken advantage of.
00:09:09.000 Those things can all happen.
00:09:11.480 I'm not saying they don't, but you can be prudent.
00:09:15.120 You can be wise about the people that you bring into your life.
00:09:18.100 But if you are a man and you're thinking to yourself, oh, I can do this better alone, you're wrong.
00:09:24.300 You can't do it better alone because you don't have all the information.
00:09:28.400 You don't have the entirety of the skill set needed to survive.
00:09:31.300 sometimes you need another guy in your life who can give you a kick in the pants or a pat on the
00:09:36.360 back or a word of encouragement or a cleverly crafted insult done in in jest and and done with
00:09:45.340 trust and good intentions behind it um i mean i've had so many conversations just over the past week
00:09:51.400 or two with guys who needed to express some things to me that they're dealing with that i was able to
00:09:56.500 provide some feedback with others. I just listened and heard what they had to say and they felt
00:10:01.480 better and walked away more edified and uplifted. And I've done the same thing. I've got a whole
00:10:06.040 group of people, men in my corner who are advocating for me, who are cheering me on,
00:10:11.020 who are rooting for me, who are holding me accountable, who are telling me, Hey man,
00:10:14.980 you can do better. I see you slipping in these areas. You need to be, you need to be better.
00:10:20.380 You need to show up more fully. And I do because I trust these guys. But if I was just doing it
00:10:25.240 alone, I'm leaving room on the table and I'm not really willing to do that. I need men in my corner
00:10:30.360 and I'll talk a little bit more about the iron council later because the guys that I have in my
00:10:34.840 corner, a large percentage of them I've met through the iron council. So I'm a, I'm an advocate of
00:10:41.200 course, cause it's our organization, but I'm also a beneficiary of what we do in the iron council.
00:10:48.200 Next one, this is similar to buying a course is collecting a library of books that you'll never
00:10:53.540 read, never have read, never will read. Uh, I used to, I used to be so guilty of this. I mean,
00:10:59.180 with the amount of men that we've had on the podcast for interviewing, I think I've done,
00:11:03.700 gosh, over maybe over 700, 800 interviews at this point and close to, if not right at 2000
00:11:10.980 total podcasts over the past 12 years, almost 12 years. I mean, I have, I have a crazy library of
00:11:17.760 books on my phone and I've got some books there behind the camera. I've got books upstairs. I've
00:11:22.080 got books in my bedroom. I mean, they're literally everywhere. And I used to pride myself on being
00:11:26.900 one of those guys like, I read, I'm going to read 50 books this year. Well, yeah, it sounds really
00:11:32.600 good, but reading isn't really the work. The work is the work. Reading is just prepping you for the
00:11:39.700 work. And if you're consuming all of your self-development time towards reading, when are
00:11:45.040 you actually applying any of that information? And if you're reading 50 books and applying even
00:11:50.680 just a little bit, which is probably not likely, but a little bit from every book, you're not
00:11:55.680 really doing anything significant in one area. Uh, you're, you're, you're just dabbling in a
00:12:02.820 thousand different areas that may or may not be relevant to what you're trying to accomplish in
00:12:06.880 life. So I'm not against books by any means. I love to read. I love to listen to books. I love
00:12:11.900 to read books. We do a book of the month inside the iron council. So we do all of that, but I'm
00:12:18.260 more interested in application than I am just reading. So read a book a little slower. Take a
00:12:25.000 little more time. If it's not serving you, put it away. You don't have to finish a book. I used
00:12:28.840 to think that too. If I open a book, if I crack open a book, then I have to finish it. No, you
00:12:33.120 don't. If it's not serving you, if it's not applicable in your life in that moment of time,
00:12:38.420 put it down. There's a million other books that you could read that might be more applicable to
00:12:42.340 you. But ultimately the ratio has to be greater and heavily weighted towards doing what the book
00:12:48.820 says to do than reading about what the book says to do. And this leads me to my next point, which
00:12:55.720 is just chasing the next bright and shiny object, the next workout, the next course, the next
00:13:01.140 program, the next book, the next podcast, the next project, the next woman, the next fill in the
00:13:07.520 blank. I mean, the amount of time that we spend just chasing random things all over the place
00:13:14.380 is asinine. I do it. I'm actually really guilty of this one. And it's something I have to be 0.97
00:13:19.680 very aware of. How do I maintain diligence towards one course of action? The gym is a
00:13:25.780 great example. How many people jump from fitness diet, fitness fad diet to exercise routines that
00:13:33.840 have no relevancy in what you're trying to accomplish with your physical health, but
00:13:37.140 their buddy said it was good. And so they go do this program and they do it for two weeks. They're
00:13:41.160 like, yeah, I'm bored. I'm going to go do this other program. And they do that for two weeks.
00:13:44.400 And then I'm going to go do this program. And they look in the mirror three, four, five years later,
00:13:48.880 they look the exact same and wonder why. Well, you didn't commit yourself to anything. You committed
00:13:54.000 yourself loosely, lightly to a lot of different things, none of which served you. If it's a good
00:14:01.120 thing, whether it's a gym routine, a nutrition plan, a business plan, relational strategies,
00:14:08.120 if it's a good thing, it's worth pursuing indefinitely. And by the way, it takes time
00:14:14.860 to see the results of your efforts. Most of the time, the prudent decisions that we make
00:14:20.340 are going to yield results eventually, but it takes time. It takes time for the process to
00:14:28.920 develop it takes time for you to become efficient with the process it takes time for the muscles to
00:14:34.620 start showing if we're talking about fitness or losing weight if we're talking about nutrition
00:14:38.760 or for you to get customers and clients and build your social media if we're talking about business
00:14:43.480 but if you're always chasing the next thing around you never give the thing an opportunity to develop
00:14:49.320 and mature and grow and become efficient and be a force of good in your life so we need to avoid
00:14:54.700 chasing the next thing. Make prudent decisions, projects, tasks, assignments, relationships,
00:15:00.980 business ventures, and then stick with it to the end. Let it work. And then there's another point
00:15:09.560 on that, and I kind of alluded to this when I was talking about the reading, is if you're talking
00:15:16.680 more than you're doing, that's a problem. That's not self-development. That's not self-work.
00:15:21.880 this is one of the problems I have with therapy and not to say that therapy is wrong or
00:15:26.260 guys shouldn't be involved in therapy but at some point it could actually become a hindrance
00:15:32.100 if all you're doing is sitting there talking about your issues and you're never working
00:15:36.600 towards resolution or you're never applying what you're learning or you're never thinking
00:15:41.160 more critically about where your thoughts and ideas originated from and which ones are helpful
00:15:46.760 and uh which ones are are toxic then you're just flapping your gums and you're not really doing
00:15:53.600 anything so ask yourself what is the ratio of me talking about my problems talking about or even
00:16:00.620 thinking about my issues uh relative to the time spent on solving the problem that's the real work
00:16:09.060 and i talked about that last week when i talked about what self-work actually looks like it's
00:16:13.960 taking action. Excuse me. It's taking action. I've got right here. I carry this around with me.
00:16:19.060 This is our 12 week battle planner. And this is the, the this is what I use to plan out and map
00:16:25.020 my day and my week. And when I'm doing that, I'm not actually doing anything. I'm not solving any
00:16:32.340 problems. I'm not moving the needle. All I'm doing is prepping to move the needle. But I know guys
00:16:37.980 who have plans like this and others, and they're beautiful. They look amazing. They're so deliberate.
00:16:43.500 they're so intentional they're so well thought out but then you look at your their life and it's
00:16:48.380 like wait what's the disconnect here you have this beautifully crafted plan and your life is
00:16:54.940 in shambles you're a wreck why because you never translated from the doing or the talking in this
00:17:00.040 case to the to the acting okay you just planned but you didn't do it you just talked but you
00:17:06.620 didn't take action so figure out what that ratio is and ask yourself man if i'm an over planner
00:17:11.420 maybe i ought to be moving into the realm of acting now look some guys and i don't think
00:17:17.220 this is the majority of men tend to be over actors that's me where i i i run the risk not
00:17:24.640 of over planning but i run the risk of of taking action too quickly which can also be
00:17:31.980 expensive i mean i've made some dumb financial decisions because uh i acted too quickly now for
00:17:40.020 a personality personality like me it makes sense that i take a step back and i plan a little more
00:17:45.360 but for most guys they're not at risk for acting too much they're at risk for acting too little
00:17:51.680 stop talking start doing the next one and this one i think is particularly insidious it's very
00:17:58.360 hard to see that's what uh i've heard and referred to it as a noble obstacle and that is hiding in
00:18:05.960 the gym or at the office. The reason it's insidious is because it's very deceptive.
00:18:12.380 You going to the gym is a good thing. I mean, we talk about that all the time,
00:18:15.760 getting in shape, getting fit, getting healthy. Those are good things,
00:18:19.300 but you can go to the gym and you can see guys who are just absolutely shredded, ripped,
00:18:25.700 bulging muscles, shredded. They look fit as they could possibly be. And then you might get to know
00:18:31.280 some of those guys and realize, man, this guy's home life is a wreck. This guy's business is
00:18:37.180 suffering. You know, you often hear the thing of the way you do one thing is the way you do
00:18:41.660 everything. I don't think so. Not in every case. I know guys, again, who are fit and strong, but
00:18:47.260 they're struggling with their mental health and life. I know guys that have incredible businesses,
00:18:53.720 thriving, successful, money-making businesses, but their wife and their kids hate them.
00:18:58.760 so clearly the way you do one thing is not the way you do everything and what a lot of guys will do
00:19:04.940 is they'll hide and i don't know what your gym is or what your office is but they'll hide behind
00:19:09.360 something that is noble in order to not do the real work that needs to be done on themselves
00:19:16.740 so stop hiding and ask yourself am i doing this wisely am i engaged in this behavior because it's
00:19:23.680 helpful? Or am I trying to avoid doing the real work that I need, which is usually the work that
00:19:29.060 we're running away from, not moving towards. And guys, the last point, the 10th that I wanted to
00:19:35.480 talk about is just quitting when things get hard. Again, if we told ourselves that, we wouldn't have
00:19:41.240 any problem identifying it. We don't say that. What we say is, I'm no longer interested. Or we
00:19:46.960 might say, hey, this isn't the path that I'm meant to follow anymore. And while that might be true,
00:19:52.920 more often than not I think it just got hard and you're using the hey I'm no longer interested
00:19:57.780 as an excuse to back away and give yourself an out that sounds better than saying I'm a quitter
00:20:02.980 we got to stop quitting we got to go all in on the things that are important and look if they're
00:20:09.040 not important and you true and only you could answer this but you truly know it's not important
00:20:13.660 or it's not a thing of yours anymore yeah sure pivot I've made pivots in my life one of them
00:20:19.960 a notable one is that i had a previous podcast called wealth anatomy it was geared towards
00:20:25.500 helping finance medical professionals understand their finances that's my background financial
00:20:30.920 management uh i did about 20 episodes and i realized very quickly that i love the medium
00:20:36.580 of podcasting but i didn't want to have that conversation anymore so technically i quit
00:20:42.380 i choose to look at it as pivoting because that was no longer what i wanted to do it wasn't that
00:20:49.240 it was hard. It was that I just wasn't interested in that discussion and pivoted to order of man.
00:20:54.200 And here we are almost 12 years later. So there's a difference between pivoting and quitting. And
00:20:59.680 if you're quitting, cause things are hard, then you're not really doing self-work and you're not
00:21:03.200 actually even giving yourself a chance to grow. Uh, just like muscles, it requires pressure.
00:21:09.380 It requires strain. It requires time under tension, uh, to break down those old habits,
00:21:13.960 to break down the muscle. If we're talking about the gym, uh, to break down your, your ego even
00:21:20.300 so that you can grow and thrive and build yourself into something new, but that requires pressure
00:21:25.080 and stress and strain. So guys, that's the list. Ask yourself, maybe even, maybe even rank yourself,
00:21:32.080 take that list and I'll read it here. And again, shortly, but rank yourself one to 10 on each of
00:21:36.860 those with 10 being the highest and maybe you're a uh maybe you have 70 points let's say um seven
00:21:44.040 in each and now your goal is to move move to move to an 80 right like i'm not doing these things
00:21:51.660 or maybe when it comes to the to the what self-care doesn't look like the lowest score is
00:21:57.180 better the one last week the highest score is better so rank yourself on both and try to reduce
00:22:03.160 your score for the things not to be doing and increase your score for the things from last
00:22:08.920 week to be doing. So let's go through them again, write them down if you want and give yourself a
00:22:14.040 score. So number one, buying a course or a program that you just don't use, save your money. Number
00:22:20.600 two, posting or endless scrolling on social media feels good, not really getting the job done.
00:22:27.620 number three waiting until you're ready to move forward next is blaming other people or
00:22:33.960 circumstances for your circumstances in your situation next is going at it alone next is
00:22:40.620 collecting a library that you've never read or that you will never read it looks cool it looks
00:22:45.780 awesome but you're not going to do anything with it next is chasing what's always around the corner
00:22:50.880 the next project the next program the next woman the next business the next this the next that
00:22:55.080 stop doing that next is talking more than you're actually doing also hiding at the gym or hiding
00:23:03.280 at the office and then the last is quitting when things get difficult again one thing to consider
00:23:09.520 is that you're not saying it that way which is why it's easy to fool ourselves I know exactly
00:23:15.740 what to tell myself to get out of or into exactly what I've always wanted to get into or out of
00:23:21.960 I can talk myself into anything
00:23:24.060 because I know myself better than anyone.
00:23:26.840 So ask yourself, what verbiage are you using?
00:23:30.880 For example, waiting until you're ready.
00:23:33.140 You're not gonna say that.
00:23:34.360 You're saying, well, I'm in the developmental stage.
00:23:36.300 We talked about that earlier.
00:23:37.940 Figure out what you say to yourself to fool yourself
00:23:40.680 into thinking you're doing something, moving the needle
00:23:42.880 when you're not moving it at all.
00:23:44.740 In fact, it's probably slipping further behind.
00:23:46.960 Guys, if you want some more help on this,
00:23:49.000 especially the going at it alone,
00:23:51.960 uh, join us in the iron council. We are open until the end of October. So as of the release
00:23:56.880 of this podcast, we'll be open for another six or seven days, uh, another week. And then we close
00:24:02.280 it down for the rest of the year. We want you inside. We want to teach you the systems and
00:24:06.600 give you the tools that you need to improve your confidence, to improve your communication with
00:24:13.340 the people that you love and ultimately to achieve better results in your life. What is
00:24:18.640 that for you? Is it losing weight? Is it getting promoted? Is it starting a business? Is it creating
00:24:25.280 more connection and intimacy with your wife? Is it deepening the relationship you have with your
00:24:30.520 children? What is it? Is it making more money, paying off debt? What is it for you? Because
00:24:35.840 ultimately with, for men and women, what we need in our lives is two things to accomplish those
00:24:41.760 goals. We need a network and we need a framework. The framework is the systems developed to achieve
00:24:49.660 that. And they're proven and they work. So you need a framework. And then the network is people
00:24:54.100 that are rallying around you, behind you, for you, advocating for you, mentoring you, coaching you,
00:24:59.700 offering insight, being a sounding board. If you're missing one of those two things,
00:25:03.900 a network or a framework, you're leaving room on the table. And that's why we invite you to
00:25:08.100 join the iron council. You'll get both the frameworks for success and the network and
00:25:12.620 brotherhood of men who are going to help you accomplish big things as we roll into the end
