00:00:00.000 One of these strange circumstances where Canada needs Alberta a lot more than Alberta needs Canada.
00:00:06.960 Like, we can exist quite happily without Canada.
00:00:09.300 Like, much happier without Canada.
00:00:11.660 The popularity of Alberta separation on the rise.
00:00:15.040 It comes as comedian Rob Schneider and the richest man in the world throw support behind the independence movement.
00:00:30.000 well folks the alberta independence movement has searched in support after a recent attack from an
00:00:50.320 activist liberal appointed judge who stepped in to try to slow the process down by blocking
00:00:56.560 the official petition count from even being delivered to Elections Alberta. Yeah, that was
00:01:02.640 their move, but it's actually completely backfired, and here's what they clearly didn't see coming.
00:01:08.820 This didn't stop anything. It did the exact opposite. Albertans didn't back off. They doubled
00:01:15.000 down. From what I'm hearing, the signature collection is actually accelerating. More people
00:01:20.200 are signing it now than there were before. A growing number of undecided people are getting
00:01:25.480 involved, and the momentum is only growing, not shrinking. And this is the part that really blows
00:01:31.840 my mind. Who exactly thought that taking away Albertans' right to a referendum was a good idea?
00:01:38.300 Did they really think that Albertans would just roll over and say, well, that's it, folks? No,
00:01:43.800 that's not how this province operates. Every time they try to shut it down, this movement only grows.
00:01:50.560 And what's happening right now might actually be the moment that gets us over that 50% support
00:01:55.460 that we're looking for. Let's get into it. The people behind the Stay Free Alberta campaign
00:02:01.520 say they already have enough signatures to force a referendum but on Friday a wrench was thrown
00:02:07.040 into the next step of their efforts towards Alberta's independence. Multiple First Nations
00:02:12.220 were in court this week arguing the petition is unconstitutional and without consultation
00:02:17.280 amounts to a treaty violation. Signatures are due to be returned to Elections Alberta by early May
00:02:25.440 for verification. But Justice Shana Leonard stayed the process on Friday, pausing it until a court
00:02:31.400 decision is made on the validity of the referendum question. So the court has taken a nuanced
00:02:36.420 position here. They've said you can continue to collect signatures until such time as the court
00:02:42.020 makes a ruling on whether this is a constitutional question or not. Stay Free Alberta's lawyer told
00:02:47.720 Global News on Friday the court's decision is surprising. I think there's some very serious
00:02:52.680 jurisdictional issues with regard to a justice of the court of King's Bench issuing orders
00:02:59.960 against an officer of the legislature. Lawyers for the Alberta government had argued against it,
00:03:05.760 saying until the province acts on a referendum, there is nothing it legally needs to consult on.
00:03:11.020 Alberta's Ministry of Justice is aware of the temporary stay granted by the judge yesterday.
00:03:15.820 As the matter is still before the courts and we are awaiting a final decision expected by May,
00:03:21.100 we have no further comment until then. In press releases from both the Pekani Nation,
00:03:26.140 a part of Blackfoot Nations, as well as the Athabasca Chippewan First Nation,
00:03:30.820 it says that they are both pleased with the court's decision and says it confirms that
00:03:34.980 there are real legal issues at stake. But this is where it starts getting weird.
00:03:39.560 This isn't just an Alberta thing anymore. This is starting to get attention outside of the country.
00:03:45.200 You've got people, big names like Elon Musk, actually talking about Alberta going its own way.
00:03:51.100 and that should tell you something this isn't just some small idea anymore and at the same time 0.95
00:03:56.300 people are looking at what canada is doing right now getting cozier with china more top-down
00:04:02.300 authoritarian control more you don't get a say energy and they're connecting the dots
00:04:08.220 the popularity of alberta separation on the rise it comes as comedian rob schneider and the richest
00:04:14.940 man in the world throw support behind the independence movement elon musk did agree that
00:04:21.820 alberta needs to flee canada the u.s based billionaire responding to this political
00:04:28.140 organizer and pro-independence albertan wednesday night on x i happen to know through my connections
00:04:35.500 that there's a lot of interest in alberta independence you know in the white house and
00:04:39.500 in the mega broader network mostly because they're really a freedom-minded kind of people
00:04:45.020 so look this is where we're at right now they try to slow this thing down they try to put a wall in
00:04:50.220 front of it and it didn't work it did the exact opposite more people are paying attention more
00:04:56.780 people are getting involved and the momentum is clearly building on the side of a busy alberta
00:05:02.940 highway a drive of a different kind a voter one residents putting their names behind a new movement
00:05:12.060 to separate alberta from the rest of canada i want out of canada so bad so bad that i think i'm gonna
00:05:20.780 move if if we don't separate because it's gotten so bad she's just the latest but not the last
00:05:27.900 signing a petition to trigger a province-wide vote for Alberta's secession or independence
00:05:33.960 this fall. If anybody will take that meeting, the Trump administration will. Let's see if we can get
00:05:39.220 it just for fun, right? And sure enough, you know, the Trump administration, you know,
00:05:43.600 likes disrupting things and challenging the status quo. Jeffrey Rath is with the Alberta
00:05:49.080 Prosperity Project, the group spearheading the secession movement. He says Albertans
00:05:54.780 are fed up with the status quo.
00:05:57.760 So it's one of these strange circumstances
00:05:59.560 where Canada needs Alberta a lot more than Alberta needs Canada.
00:06:05.020 Like, we can exist quite happily without Canada.
00:06:07.360 Like, much happier without Canada, right?
00:06:10.100 That's one of the big things that they throw out against Alberta independence.
00:06:14.020 Oh, you're going to be landlocked.
00:06:15.700 Well, wait a minute, boys and girls, we're landlocked now.
00:06:18.740 Alberta is one of Canada's ten provinces
00:06:21.200 known as the country's energy hub
00:06:24.020 because of its abundant oil, sometimes called the Texas of Canada, not just for the black gold,
00:06:31.440 but also because it's one of the country's most conservative provinces. There are plenty of
00:06:37.140 people who might hear someone say, we want our independence. And there are a lot of people who
00:06:42.740 upon hearing that would say, well, that sounds like a crazy idea. Yeah, well, that's kind of
00:06:50.180 funny. It's like, you know, I'd like to leave home. It's like, that's kind of silly. Shouldn't
00:06:53.580 you live in your mom's basement your entire life right it's that's kind of my response to that i
00:06:57.860 mean for albertans i think you know we could literally the day we declared ourselves independent
00:07:02.320 from canada would be the country with the highest gdp per capita in the world you know you look at
00:07:08.060 alberta like we have the third largest oil resource in the world right we have more barrels like by a
00:07:14.160 factor of two or three we have three times more barrels of oil per capita than saudi arabia has
00:07:20.580 this isn't some small local story anymore this is starting to get noticed outside of the country
00:07:25.680 and once that happens you don't just put it back in the box so the real question now isn't if this
00:07:30.740 will grow it's how far it'll end up going and if you've been seeing this movement grow like i have
00:07:35.800 make sure you're subscribed to the channel because this channel is tracking it every step of the way
00:07:41.000 and we will keep you informed see you in the next one
00:07:43.940 I hear the train coming
00:07:45.720 It's rolling around the bed
00:07:50.120 And I ain't seen the sunshine
00:07:54.840 I don't know when
