Summary

The government of Alberta is doing the unthinkable against the Liberals' gun grab scheme. The premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, is pushing back heavily, and her government is throwing down a serious challenge to Ottawa by invoking the sovereignty act. That means Alberta s basically telling the feds, we re not playing along with your plan to treat law-abiding gun owners like criminals. We re not confiscating anybody s guns here. We re standing up for the right of Albertans to keep their legally owned firearms and handle things on their own terms.

00:00:38.100 The government of Alberta is doing the unthinkable against the Liberals' gun grab scheme.
00:00:44.280 Here's what's going on.
00:00:45.700 The premier of Alberta is pushing back heavily, and her government is throwing down a serious challenge to Ottawa by invoking the Sovereignty Act.
00:00:54.260 Now, what does that mean?
00:00:55.700 It means Alberta's basically telling the feds, we're not playing along with your plan to treat law-abiding gun owners like criminals.
00:01:03.920 We're not confiscating anybody's guns here.
00:01:06.980 They're standing up for the right of Albertans to keep their legally owned firearms and handle things on their own terms.
00:01:14.020 Let's get into the video.
00:01:17.800 Same thing for law-abiding gun owners.
00:01:20.040 They bought their guns legally in good faith.
00:01:22.480 And the last thing we want our policing resources or our Crown prosecutors doing is wasting their time going after law-abiding citizens.
00:01:30.260 Let's go after the bad guys there, too.
00:01:31.640 We've got plenty of gangs and organized crime and people who are up to no good.
00:01:35.900 That's what we're policing and our prosecution priority should be.
00:01:39.340 And so we passed a motion in the legislature to affirm that.
00:01:44.220 And it is one of the things, one of the powers that we have as a province that, yes, the federal government can put forward criminal code sanctions as part of their constitutional jurisdiction.
00:01:54.540 Well, we're responsible for administration of justice and policing.
00:01:57.820 And so we can exercise our jurisdiction by declining to make that a priority for policing or prosecution.
00:02:03.700 I got a little tip for low-life criminals out there.
00:02:06.780 If you don't want to get shot, don't break into someone's house.
00:02:10.480 It's really that simple, isn't it?
00:02:12.960 It really is.
00:02:15.160 We want our great men and women in law enforcement and our justice system to spend their precious time and effort going after criminals.
00:02:23.200 Not farmers, not ranchers or sport shooters, nor Albertans defending their families and their homes.
00:02:29.020 Now let's dive into how Premier Danielle Smith is leading this charge.
00:02:33.640 She's made it loud and clear that Alberta's not going to let Ottawa's gun grab roll in without a fight.
00:02:39.640 In a recent statement, she's basically said, look, our government isn't going to help you disarm our law-abiding citizens.
00:02:46.020 She's defending the idea that people in Alberta have a right to protect themselves and their families and that the federal policy is overreaching.
00:02:54.040 Her statement against home invaders is the key here.
00:02:56.720 If you don't want to get shot, don't break into people's houses.
00:03:00.840 It's a real show of defiance in a country where people go to jail for defending themselves and a clear message that Alberta's going to stand its ground.
00:03:09.240 I wanted to get your reaction to an incident, I believe, in Lindsay, Ontario, where a man is now facing criminal charges for defending himself from a home intruder.
00:03:21.080 What are your thoughts on that situation?
00:03:23.160 Well, if you don't want to get shot or beaten up, don't break into people's houses.
00:03:27.440 It's pretty straightforward.
00:03:33.620 We had a similar incident in Alberta where somebody defended themselves and they determined that there was not a reasonable likelihood of conviction
00:03:42.280 because we do expect that people are going to use a reasonable use of force to defend themselves and their families and I support that.
00:03:50.540 These are part of the Order and Council ban, ban, ban, ban, ban.
00:03:53.800 The federal government granted amnesty to existing owners of the 2,500 types of firearms that were banned in 2020, but that amnesty will be expiring next fall.
00:04:03.880 To compensate, Ottawa is offering to buy those guns back before they're ultimately seized.
00:04:09.860 But...
00:04:10.400 We will oppose any policy that undermines law-abiding firearm owners and does not combat the criminal use of firearms.
00:04:16.740 Using its Sovereignty Act, the Alberta government says it will direct all provincial entities, including municipal police forces,
00:04:22.820 not to implement the federal gun seizure program.
00:04:25.860 Crown prosecutors will also be given guidance not to pursue charges against gun owners who fail to surrender their banned guns
00:04:31.740 or who use their firearms to protect themselves, their families or homes.
00:04:36.280 The issue of gun rights is an important one to the United Conservative Party's base,
00:04:40.940 who over the weekend booed the Premier for signing an agreement with the federal government over energy policy.
00:04:47.220 But the federal government says motion or not, when it comes to federal law, all gun owners will need to comply.
00:04:53.340 We will require compliance, so at some point, provinces and territories need to come on board.
00:04:58.280 Setting the stage for another Alberta-Ottawa showdown.
00:05:01.200 With a fight that no promised pipeline can pacify.
00:05:05.040 So here's the big picture.
00:05:06.600 Alberta isn't just pushing back.
00:05:08.560 They're exposing how backwards Ottawa's entire gun grab really is.
00:05:13.000 Instead of cracking down on smuggled guns and violent repeat offenders,
00:05:17.260 the federal government is spending more money on confiscating legal firearms than on NATO or border security combined.
00:05:24.580 With nothing to show for it.
00:05:26.260 They've barely collected any guns because the citizens know better than to surrender their legally obtained property to a tyrannical government.
00:05:35.420 The Liberals banned more than 2,000 models of firearms, including handguns and many semi-automatic style weapons, offering to buy them back.
00:05:44.120 A lot of young Canadians getting involved in this for various reasons.
00:05:47.740 When people start talking about gun owner rights, I get very concerned about the ideological flow of ideas from the U.S.
00:05:59.400 We've got our camera set up behind this bulletproof glass.
00:06:01.740 Sociologists blame a renewed interest in guns in part on the influence of social media.
00:06:07.300 The kind of masculine ideology that is being promoted on the radical right side of the political spectrum.
00:06:12.900 It is very much a heroic masculinity, a nostalgic masculinity.
00:06:18.280 Well, I guess, God forbid, young men actually embrace their masculinity and learn responsible self-defense.
00:06:25.600 Leave it to the woke left to lose their minds over people embracing traditional values.
00:06:31.540 The government paid media and anti-gun talking heads are crying foul over Canadians legally owning firearms.
00:06:38.040 Just because they're black and they look kind of like each other doesn't make them all bad.
00:06:44.400 When the RCMP put out this opinion piece saying that they believe that the R-9 is a prohibited firearm, it has the impact of law.
00:06:55.880 Who's going to buy one of my rifles now with this firearms reference table out there that says that the R-9 is a prohibited rifle?
00:07:03.820 But there's no way to actually fight the FRT.
00:07:06.800 So what do you think?
00:07:08.260 Should other provinces follow in Alberta's footsteps and defy the federal government?
