00:04:30.240there have been reports of France and Germany pushing back against the idea of Canada getting
00:04:36.960some sort of associate membership status with the European Union. So in the run-up of the summit,
00:04:43.980the headline-making issue was the associate membership of Canada. That was eventually
00:04:51.500shot down by a couple of member states. What happened? Look, we need to go back last month.
00:04:57.840Ursula von der Leyen delivers her State of the Union speech in Strasbourg and all of a sudden
00:05:02.880she introduces this idea of making Canada the first ever associate member of the European Union
00:05:08.800in front of Mark Carney. Everybody's surprised and everybody's confused. Member states have a
00:05:14.400lot of questions about what this concept means in practice and they are also a bit resentful
00:05:19.520about the fact that von der Leyen did not consult with them before making this announcement.
00:05:24.000So what happened this week is that Germany led a push to basically kill the concept and any mention of associate membership has been deleted from the joint declaration and now we only see an ever closer association, which is very different.
00:05:42.640France and Germany, two of the biggest players in Europe.
00:05:47.300Now, they're not saying Canada can trade with Europe,
00:05:50.960but even some of the European countries themselves are presenting resistance
00:05:55.560to this whole idea of a global government that influences Canada as well.
