Summary
In this episode, I discuss why a true democracy can never exist in a multiracial society. I discuss examples from the United States, Yugoslavia, and apartheid in South Africa, to name a few. I also talk about the role of identity in the development of a democracy.

Let's talk about democracy and what I mean when I say democracy and how it can never exist in a
00:00:07.300
multiracial society. And I'm not going to say multicultural because multiculturalism is
00:00:12.680
something totally different. True democracy, defined as a system where all citizens have
00:00:19.460
equal representation and influence over governance, faces significant challenges in
00:00:25.440
any multiracial society. This is due to inherent tribalism, you know, competing rather interests
00:00:32.540
and historical patterns of division. While the idea of democracy assumes a unified populace
00:00:40.080
capable of rational consensus, human nature and history suggest that racial diversity often
00:00:47.500
amplifies factionalism, undermining the cohesion necessary for such a system to function effectively.
00:00:56.240
So one of the examples here is the United States, which a lot of people often use as an example,
00:01:02.840
but for different reasons. So obviously, the United States was founded on Euro, Anglo, European culture,
00:01:09.820
religion, Christianity. And, you know, it was intended for the European settler or European
00:01:15.800
person. However, they have a longer history than some of the other Western countries,
00:01:20.880
including, you know, slavery. So there is a little bit of a nuance there when it comes to
00:01:25.700
with the black population. However, it's kind of been flipped on the opposite side in the US,
00:01:30.680
you'll see now, there is so much favor or I mean, things are starting to kind of change slowly here.
00:01:36.940
But there is has been since slavery was ended, there's been a slow push. And I guess in the last 10 years,
00:01:44.220
you wouldn't say it's exactly slow, but to favor one group over another, and that would be obviously
00:01:49.700
the black group. So you're going to have that in any country. I know most people think, well,
00:01:53.440
it's white supremacy in the US. It's actually not. It's quite the opposite. So you can't have a true
00:01:58.640
democracy in situations like that, because one group is always going to rise to the top and put their
00:02:03.760
own interests above everybody else. Another example you could use is Yugoslavia. Now it's a
00:02:11.520
multi ethnic state that disintegrated in the 90s. Under Tito's rule, a semblance of a unity was
00:02:17.940
maintained. But beneath that, the Serbs and the Croatians, the Bosnians, and other harbored,
00:02:24.500
and others rather harbored a deep, you know, seated ethnic loyalty as most ethnic groups do. When
00:02:30.240
democratic elections were introduced after his death, the voting was largely split along ethnic
00:02:36.320
lines, you know, empowering nationalist leaders like Slobodan Milosevic, and Franco Tudeman, I'm
00:02:42.420
probably butchering that. The result was not a unified democratic will, but a descent into war and
00:02:47.980
genocide, illustrating how racial and ethnic diversity can transform, you know, democratic
00:02:53.260
mechanisms into tools for exclusion and conflict rather than a consensus. Again, people are going to
00:02:58.840
side with their tribe. Now, the biggest and most, you know, I guess it's not even talked about as
00:03:05.040
much, although it is coming to the forefront more now, is the South Africans transition to apartheid,
00:03:10.840
right? To a somewhat democracy. Well, they did that in 1994. And it highlighted, obviously, the fragility
00:03:17.560
of the multiracial, multiracial, rather democratic ideals. You know, I guess Nelson Mandela was trying to
00:03:24.560
at least the claim was that he was trying to foster reconciliation. But, you know, but that
00:03:30.860
tended to prioritize the black majority's interests over the white majority interests who in South
00:03:37.880
Africa have been there, obviously, the longest they've, they're ones who cultivate the land who,
00:03:42.640
you know, are the farmers for the most part. So you can see what's happening now. And it's,
00:03:47.080
it's definitely heading towards ethnic genocide of the white boar or the farmer. So, again,
00:03:53.560
can they really have a true democracy in, you know, this is like a very short summary of it,
00:03:59.420
but you really can't have a true democracy in multiracial society, because everybody is tribal,
00:04:05.020
that's just human nature, they're going to tribe up with their own group at the end of it, despite,
00:04:10.680
you know, maybe generations of being born into another, you know, ethnic group or whatever like
00:04:17.640
that. At the end of the day, I believe your genes, your, you know, biology is always going to win out.
00:04:23.560
So, I mean, the examples I gave, they kind of underscore a big issue is that in multiracial
00:04:29.700
societies, groups, often the group identity trumps the individual equality. You know, people,
00:04:36.060
like I said, tend to align with their ethnic kin, their racial or ethnic kin, and viewing governance
00:04:41.260
as a zero sum game, basically, where one group's gain is another group's loss. You see that quite
00:04:46.680
often with the black community. This dynamic erodes the trust and shared purpose that true democracy
00:04:55.440
would require. I mean, historically, homogenous societies like the ancient Athens, despite its own
00:05:01.680
exclusions, could approximate democratic ideals more closely, because common identity reduced
00:05:08.960
total or sorry, reduced factionalism. In contrast, you know, multiracial states were capable of a
00:05:14.820
formal democracy. They struggled to transcend tribal instincts, leaving the system vulnerable to
00:05:20.840
obviously manipulation and equity, I guess you could say, or collapse. I believe it usually heads
00:05:26.720
towards collapse. That's generally the trajectory of most of these things. So, you know, a true democracy,
00:05:32.100
it's an expression of a unified and equal populace. It remains really unattainable, ideal in the face of
00:05:37.920
racial diversity. That's at least my opinion. I have not found a historical example yet of a truly
00:05:45.540
multiracial, democratic, truly democratic society that has succeeded for more than maybe a century or
00:05:52.920
two. But I'd be, I would love to hear if anybody else has a different opinion on that and put that in
00:05:58.240
the comments here. But yeah, I just don't know why they keep pushing this whole, you know, they kind of
00:06:04.200
make it the same, mean the same thing, like democracy, you know, is multiculturalism, or is
00:06:09.640
multiracialism, we can't have one without the other, when in fact, they're actually working towards
00:06:13.920
each other, you know, like opposing each other, and it's causing the fraction, which obviously is
00:06:18.520
probably, at least, again, in my opinion, all part of the PSYOP.
00:06:23.640
they can't have one without the other, but it doesn't matter what you're Howl Ohlig
