Summary

Why do they hate us? a question that was famously asked by journalists and presidents in the aftermath of 9/11. And judging by the last 14 years of disastrous wars, sending grandma through pat-down lines and x-ray machines, and freedom fries, I think it s safe to say that we ve never really answered that question with a great deal of honesty and self-awareness.

00:00:00.040 Why do they hate us?
00:00:03.320 That's a question that was famously asked by journalists and presidents and average Joes
00:00:10.380 in the aftermath of the September 11th terror bombings.
00:00:15.580 Judging by the last 14 years of disastrous wars,
00:00:21.040 sending grandma through pat-down lines and x-ray machines and freedom fries,
00:00:26.600 I think it's safe to say that we never really answered that question
00:00:32.000 with a great deal of honesty and self-awareness.
00:00:36.300 Hopefully we can do a little bit better here today.
00:00:40.760 Well, first let's break this question down.
00:00:44.700 When I say us, I recognize that there are many different people in this room
00:00:50.280 with varying perspectives, hopes, and dreams.
00:00:53.380 So I'll define us simply.
00:00:57.480 We think race is biologically real
00:01:01.200 and that it has tremendous social, cultural, and historical consequences.
00:01:08.980 More important, we have a passionate attachment to our extended family
00:01:14.740 and the cultures and civilization that it birthed.
00:01:18.600 Now, when I say hate, I'm not referring to a passing emotion
00:01:27.020 or a maniacal contempt or loathing or resentment to some particular individual.
00:01:33.860 I'm referring to something much bigger.
00:01:38.460 To the total delegitimization of the white man
00:01:43.160 and to what is often called white guilt.
00:01:47.080 This feeling that is so pervasive that the white race and white racism
00:01:54.740 are uniquely responsible for suffering and injustice in the world.
00:02:00.540 These ideas could best be summed up by Susan Sontag's facile remark
00:02:16.420 that the white race is the cancer of human history.
00:02:21.020 Sontag, of course, was a literary poser,
00:02:23.800 but the sentiment behind her words is very much a part of the imagination
00:02:30.420 of millions of people
00:02:32.360 and has become a kind of implicit slogan of the unified left.
00:02:39.800 Yesterday, a friend sent me a photographic essay
00:02:43.640 from the hugely popular website BuzzFeed.
00:02:47.080 A journalist, Isaac Fitzgerald,
00:02:51.760 met with attendees at the annual Association of Writers and Writing Programs,
00:02:57.900 which sounds like a dorky conservative gathering, to say the least.
00:03:03.780 Fitzgerald asked them to send a message
00:03:06.140 to the White Straight Male Publishing Establishment
00:03:12.040 and, apparently, white straight males in general.
00:03:17.080 And so here are the results.
00:03:20.920 Read less straight white men.
00:03:23.720 That's actually the most benign one.
00:03:26.360 We owe you nothing.
00:03:29.220 Sit down and let us abolish you.
00:03:34.600 And she looks so sweet.
00:03:38.920 We are not tokens.
00:03:41.820 You have not doomed us.
00:03:43.920 You've doomed yourselves.
00:03:45.640 Agreed.
00:03:51.480 We don't need you.
00:03:56.180 No comment.
00:03:59.140 Take a vacation.
00:04:01.180 A long one.
00:04:02.700 It's pretty sinister.
00:04:06.360 Don't assume that you are at the center.
00:04:09.460 It's actually good advice.
00:04:10.380 In thinking about the they and why do they hate us,
00:04:17.380 it's tempting to focus on the kinds of people in these images
00:04:21.180 or the kinds of people who have often protested just outside our conference.
00:04:28.440 You know the type.
00:04:30.160 A particularly furry and foul-smelling species.
00:04:33.720 Even the male varieties.
00:04:38.860 But I have sometimes wondered if we just totally misunderstand these people.
00:04:43.140 And when they protest, they're actually groupies and rabid superfans
00:04:49.240 who have traveled across the country to come up, hold up a sign,
00:04:52.740 and scream our name and maybe get an autograph.
00:04:55.180 We just haven't given them a chance.
00:04:57.100 In other words, it's tempting to focus our inquiry on leftist,
00:05:03.960 social justice warriors, and granola communists.
00:05:07.700 Because they personify in our minds what white guilt is and means.
00:05:14.160 We don't quite understand what motivates them.
00:05:17.260 But whatever it is, it certainly can't be reduced to money or career advancement.
00:05:24.740 They are true believers, which you could say makes them interesting.
00:05:32.000 But in focusing solely on this low-hanging fruit, we miss the big picture.
00:05:38.000 We radically underestimate just how widespread and seemingly normal white guilt really is.
00:05:48.580 We overlook the banality of evil.
00:05:52.920 Those little things that go on every day,
00:05:56.700 which millions take for granted or don't even think about at all,
00:06:00.620 and which are slowly eating away at our future.
00:06:03.320 For when I say they, in why do they hate us,
00:06:09.840 I'm actually referring to everyone.
00:06:13.360 To the vast majority of the population of the industrialized world.
00:06:18.820 They hate us.
00:06:20.580 And we know it.
00:06:22.680 It's why even the brave ones among us are afraid to show their faces.
00:06:29.000 White guilt is indeed so pervasive
00:06:31.540 that it's difficult to pinpoint
00:06:33.540 or say where it ends and where it begins.
00:06:38.360 For millions who don't want to think about white guilt,
00:06:42.820 white guilt is thinking for them.
00:06:46.500 So what do I mean by all this?
00:06:48.920 As likely everyone here remembers,
00:06:51.380 last August, a major story emerged from Rotherham
00:06:55.820 in South Yorkshire, England.
00:06:58.220 A report revealed that between 1997 and 2013,
00:07:04.520 some 1,400 children in the town,
00:07:07.960 and likely many more,
00:07:10.020 experienced the worst kinds of sadistic rape,
00:07:14.400 beatings, and torture.
00:07:17.380 In the words of the BBC,
00:07:19.840 gang rape had become a usual part of growing up in Rotherham,
00:07:24.940 this otherwise quaint town with Roman ruins and a Gothic cathedral.
00:07:32.100 Looking into the matter further,
00:07:34.320 we discovered that the vast majority,
00:07:36.560 if not all, of the alleged rapist and child abusers
00:07:40.420 were Asian,
00:07:42.220 which in British parlance means Arab, Semitic, and mostly Muslim.
00:07:46.680 Furthermore,
00:07:48.680 the reason this grotesque situation was allowed to persist for so long
00:07:55.840 was that the accusations, stories, and rumors
00:07:59.400 that the authorities were hearing
00:08:01.160 always involved Asian men as the perpetrators.
00:08:04.860 The town council thus constantly avoided the issue,
00:08:11.060 like someone trying to forget a bad memory
00:08:14.120 because they feared being called racist.
00:08:18.920 In a way, the Rotherham case would be much more reassuring
00:08:23.600 if it had been revealed that the town council
00:08:26.460 were secret Maoist revolutionaries,
00:08:29.460 Muslim power activists,
00:08:31.880 or just Satan worshippers or perverts.
00:08:35.400 That is, if they were part of some dark conspiracy
00:08:38.880 to destroy the white race.
00:08:41.400 What makes Rotherham truly horrifying
00:08:44.540 is that they weren't.
00:08:47.580 The authorities in the town were,
00:08:50.640 to all accounts,
00:08:52.320 respectable white people
00:08:53.780 who took their positions
00:08:55.700 and social responsibilities seriously.
00:08:59.460 The story offers us a glimpse
00:09:02.380 of just how powerful white guilt can be.
00:09:06.460 In our society,
00:09:08.340 being labeled a racist
00:09:09.620 is arguably more damaging
00:09:11.880 than being convicted for murder.
00:09:14.860 For even murderers get second chances.
00:09:18.340 But I never imagined
00:09:19.820 that white people might actually prefer
00:09:22.220 that their children be raped and demeaned
00:09:25.940 than they have the scarlet R
00:09:28.620 penned on their chest.
00:09:32.400 So what does this mean for us?
00:09:36.200 Who are we,
00:09:37.320 who are taking part in this conference
00:09:39.900 on matters that most white people
00:09:42.580 would equate with unspeakable crimes?
00:09:46.540 Among other things,
00:09:48.140 this means that we occupy
00:09:49.580 a very strange position in modern society.
00:09:53.080 As the writer Gregory Hood remarked,
00:09:57.900 we racists,
00:09:59.440 as our enemies call us,
00:10:01.420 are utterly powerless.
00:10:03.960 And yet,
00:10:04.740 we've got all the power.
00:10:07.480 We are what huge foundations,
00:10:10.100 even sovereign governments,
00:10:11.000 have dedicated billions to combat,
00:10:15.400 unsuccessfully.
00:10:16.300 We are what rival politicians
00:10:19.580 accuse each other of being.
00:10:23.080 We are able somehow
00:10:24.540 to sow hatred in the world,
00:10:26.880 which would otherwise enjoy
00:10:29.040 a multiracial embrace.
00:10:32.360 We might very well feel powerless,
00:10:36.820 not to mention impoverished
00:10:38.840 and other things,
00:10:39.860 but that is not how we are viewed.
00:10:44.300 Our situation reminds me
00:10:46.180 of an old joke,
00:10:47.800 one that involves ethnic humor,
00:10:49.820 but which is actually beloved
00:10:51.540 by anti-racist and leftists.
00:10:55.240 There are two Jews
00:10:56.700 sitting on a park bench
00:10:57.980 one Sunday.
00:10:59.880 One discovers that the other
00:11:01.300 isn't reading the New York Times
00:11:03.000 or whatever as usual,
00:11:04.520 but instead is reading,
00:11:05.900 of all things,
00:11:06.740 a neo-Nazi pamphlet.
00:11:08.240 When asked how
00:11:10.380 he could read such trash,
00:11:12.540 the Jew remarks that
00:11:13.540 he loves this magazine.
00:11:15.900 It says here
00:11:16.600 that the Holocaust never happened
00:11:18.160 and that you and me
00:11:19.220 control the world.
00:11:21.440 Well,
00:11:21.860 such a joke
00:11:25.620 is of course misleading
00:11:27.060 with regard to the status
00:11:29.120 of Jews in modern America
00:11:30.480 and the power
00:11:31.480 of some Jewish organizations.
00:11:34.020 But is this joke
00:11:35.920 not perfectly suited to us
00:11:38.160 perhaps we should spend
00:11:40.900 more therapeutic Sundays
00:11:42.460 reading critical race theory.
00:11:44.860 We'll learn just how powerful
00:11:46.760 we really are.
00:11:49.440 Are our institutions underfunded?
00:11:52.640 Have some of us lost our jobs
00:11:54.520 or become estranged
00:11:55.960 from our wives for our views?
00:11:58.460 Never fear,
00:12:00.240 for apparently we have hegemony
00:12:02.200 over the known world.
00:12:03.420 What this situation tells us
00:12:08.460 is that
00:12:09.000 however futile
00:12:11.040 our efforts might feel,
00:12:13.820 and they feel futile sometimes,
00:12:16.560 when we do
00:12:17.760 what we do,
00:12:19.160 we're doing something powerful,
00:12:22.040 something dangerous.
00:12:23.940 We're dynamite.
00:12:26.620 And because of that,
00:12:28.240 we make the modern world
00:12:29.640 hysteric.
00:12:33.760 In case you think
00:12:34.840 I'm exaggerating,
00:12:36.400 I would direct your attention
00:12:38.000 to the recent travails
00:12:40.040 of little old me.
00:12:43.380 To sum things up,
00:12:45.200 in the fall and winter
00:12:46.400 of last year,
00:12:47.920 I was dragged out of a bar
00:12:49.700 in Budapest
00:12:50.520 by the police,
00:12:52.340 thrown into jail
00:12:53.300 for three days,
00:12:54.660 then shipped out of the country
00:12:56.060 in cuffs.
00:12:56.620 When I arrived back home,
00:12:59.160 a social movement
00:13:00.200 had formed
00:13:00.920 dedicated to making
00:13:02.420 Richard Spencer illegal.
00:13:07.140 In phrasing things this way,
00:13:09.240 I'm exaggerating
00:13:10.440 only slightly.
00:13:12.940 The story,
00:13:14.200 if you haven't heard it,
00:13:15.200 goes like this.
00:13:17.260 My organization,
00:13:18.600 the National Policy Institute,
00:13:20.560 was to host an event
00:13:22.040 quite similar to this one,
00:13:23.840 an English-language conference
00:13:26.140 in the beautiful
00:13:27.300 imperial city
00:13:28.480 of Budapest.
00:13:31.680 Jared Taylor
00:13:32.560 was to be a featured speaker,
00:13:34.000 as were other Americans,
00:13:35.320 a Croatian,
00:13:36.340 a noted Russian philosopher,
00:13:37.860 and a French activist,
00:13:39.040 among others.
00:13:40.980 The Budapest event
00:13:42.560 was to be something rare.
00:13:44.820 It was a genuine attempt
00:13:46.520 by all involved
00:13:48.000 to be good Europeans,
00:13:51.140 to think as Europeans,
00:13:53.060 and to try to overcome
00:13:55.360 the ethnic conflicts
00:13:57.000 and hatreds
00:13:58.020 that have informed
00:13:59.140 European history
00:14:00.220 to this very day
00:14:01.760 to our great detriment.
00:14:04.740 But,
00:14:05.140 from one perspective,
00:14:06.100 our gathering
00:14:06.820 could easily be
00:14:08.340 thought of
00:14:10.200 as entirely harmless.
00:14:12.460 The event
00:14:13.040 was just talk
00:14:14.080 and would have been
00:14:15.280 attended by journalists,
00:14:16.980 bohemians,
00:14:17.660 and other dreamers.
00:14:18.520 But we struck a nerve.
00:14:21.860 We became dangerous.
00:14:24.300 As I was increasingly aware,
00:14:26.160 our conference
00:14:26.760 was making headlines.
00:14:28.780 And it was becoming
00:14:29.620 a political football,
00:14:31.260 and even launched
00:14:32.360 a sort of
00:14:33.060 constitutional crisis
00:14:34.580 over free speech
00:14:36.160 in Hungary.
00:14:37.800 The event
00:14:38.680 happened to be scheduled
00:14:39.600 just before
00:14:40.140 a parliamentary election,
00:14:41.380 and suddenly
00:14:42.520 politicians
00:14:43.200 were forced
00:14:43.760 to weigh in
00:14:44.560 on the hate
00:14:45.540 that was just about
00:14:46.600 to descend
00:14:47.160 on them
00:14:47.860 from abroad.
00:14:50.760 Then strange things
00:14:52.260 started to happen.
00:14:53.300 First of all,
00:14:54.080 all of our venues
00:14:54.980 canceled.
00:14:57.160 Next,
00:14:57.740 and through our colleagues,
00:14:58.720 we had made contact
00:15:00.260 with a man
00:15:00.740 named Marton
00:15:01.640 Gianjosi
00:15:02.860 and the ethno-nationalist
00:15:04.520 party,
00:15:04.980 Yabek.
00:15:06.040 But suddenly,
00:15:07.040 these contacts
00:15:08.180 were claiming
00:15:08.660 that they had
00:15:09.220 no idea
00:15:10.140 who we were.
00:15:11.380 They were apparently
00:15:11.920 suffering from a kind
00:15:13.000 of political amnesia.
00:15:15.700 I hope they recovered.
00:15:18.700 Things started
00:15:19.540 to get crazy
00:15:20.360 when we were denounced
00:15:21.440 by the minister
00:15:22.220 of the interior,
00:15:23.800 and then by no less
00:15:25.020 than the prime minister
00:15:26.080 himself,
00:15:27.060 Viktor Orban,
00:15:28.120 who claimed
00:15:28.660 that he would use
00:15:29.500 quote,
00:15:29.880 all legal means,
00:15:31.220 end quote,
00:15:31.660 at his disposal
00:15:32.440 to stop us.
00:15:35.200 I was taken aback
00:15:37.300 by all this,
00:15:37.940 and I certainly
00:15:38.740 thought that maybe
00:15:40.680 I should just
00:15:41.280 cancel everything.
00:15:43.760 But there was
00:15:44.520 something about
00:15:45.120 doing that
00:15:45.720 that didn't feel
00:15:46.520 right.
00:15:48.900 First off,
00:15:49.720 there were some
00:15:50.160 150 people
00:15:51.400 coming to Budapest
00:15:52.380 from around the world.
00:15:54.140 Conferences are really
00:15:55.020 about meeting people
00:15:56.080 and making friends,
00:15:57.240 not speeches.
00:15:58.320 So why shouldn't we
00:15:59.020 all come together
00:15:59.820 in a private venue?
00:16:01.920 On another level,
00:16:03.040 I felt that our movement
00:16:04.080 needed to stand
00:16:05.260 its ground.
00:16:05.860 And we needed
00:16:07.240 to force our enemies
00:16:08.680 to play by their own
00:16:09.980 rules and follow
00:16:11.420 through with their
00:16:12.140 threats.
00:16:14.200 If Viktor Orban
00:16:15.460 was determined
00:16:16.260 to act like a
00:16:17.700 liberal caricature
00:16:18.700 of a fascist
00:16:19.620 and demonstrate
00:16:20.620 our movement's
00:16:21.540 resolve all at the
00:16:22.440 same time,
00:16:23.280 then why should I
00:16:24.080 stop him?
00:16:27.740 The rest is,
00:16:29.320 as they say,
00:16:29.920 a blur.
00:16:30.380 The government
00:16:32.800 sent a detail
00:16:33.860 of a couple dozen
00:16:34.860 police officers,
00:16:35.920 some undercover,
00:16:37.220 to track us down
00:16:38.240 at a local bar.
00:16:40.000 I was arrested
00:16:41.100 around midnight,
00:16:42.620 and the next 15 hours
00:16:44.100 were comprised
00:16:45.000 of bright lights,
00:16:46.440 hard benches,
00:16:47.280 and being shuttled
00:16:48.000 between various
00:16:48.800 bureaucracies.
00:16:50.320 I was forced
00:16:51.220 to sign my name
00:16:52.260 to documents
00:16:52.940 printed at Magyar,
00:16:55.160 which is understandable
00:16:55.880 we were in Hungary,
00:16:56.580 but they gave the
00:16:57.140 proceedings a Kafka-esque
00:16:58.960 quality.
00:17:00.340 I was then informed
00:17:01.500 that I had been
00:17:02.280 declared a national
00:17:03.380 security threat,
00:17:05.040 which made everything
00:17:07.940 even Kafka-esker.
00:17:13.260 Jail is the experience
00:17:14.940 of having everything
00:17:16.120 on your person,
00:17:17.420 up to the lint
00:17:18.300 in your pockets,
00:17:19.420 inspected and cataloged,
00:17:21.660 and then being under
00:17:22.500 constant surveillance
00:17:23.800 by guards,
00:17:24.920 literally even
00:17:25.800 while you sleep.
00:17:26.640 It's also the experience
00:17:29.220 of being served
00:17:30.120 some substance
00:17:30.960 that appears
00:17:32.140 to be a mix
00:17:32.820 between sawdust
00:17:33.740 and cat food.
00:17:35.860 I don't say any of this
00:17:37.600 to evoke pity.
00:17:39.780 In a way,
00:17:40.580 I'm deeply grateful
00:17:41.820 for what happened,
00:17:43.860 as funny as that
00:17:44.620 might sound.
00:17:46.440 A little bit of prison
00:17:48.020 goes a long way.
00:17:50.240 It focuses the mind.
00:17:51.840 It allowed me
00:17:53.400 to better understand
00:17:54.360 myself and learn
00:17:55.640 just how far
00:17:56.600 I was willing to go.
00:17:58.820 And crises reveal
00:17:59.760 character.
00:18:01.580 In other words,
00:18:02.800 you get to know
00:18:04.160 who your friends
00:18:05.160 really are
00:18:06.040 and aren't.
00:18:09.260 When I arrived
00:18:10.440 back in Whitefish,
00:18:11.540 Montana,
00:18:12.080 where I live
00:18:12.980 for half of the year,
00:18:14.200 I spent the next
00:18:15.340 few months
00:18:16.060 fighting a local
00:18:17.220 battle I previously
00:18:18.720 didn't think
00:18:19.500 was even possible.
00:18:21.640 I had been under
00:18:22.660 this impression
00:18:23.400 that Montana
00:18:24.580 was immune
00:18:25.940 to leftists,
00:18:27.740 that all those
00:18:28.680 people had
00:18:29.500 moved to Oregon
00:18:30.620 or something.
00:18:32.220 But,
00:18:33.000 lo and behold,
00:18:34.840 after the town paper
00:18:35.960 reported on my
00:18:37.000 Hungarian adventure,
00:18:39.180 a local rabbi
00:18:40.240 and his band
00:18:41.180 of the self-righteous
00:18:42.440 came out
00:18:43.380 of the woodwork.
00:18:45.000 The group
00:18:45.540 called themselves
00:18:46.540 Love Lives Here.
00:18:47.880 And much like
00:18:53.220 the SBLC,
00:18:54.200 their lives
00:18:54.820 are based
00:18:55.440 on hating hate.
00:19:07.620 Furry,
00:19:08.340 foul-smelling
00:19:08.920 creatures,
00:19:09.520 even the male
00:19:10.120 varieties.
00:19:12.120 In October,
00:19:13.240 more than
00:19:13.480 a hundred people
00:19:14.220 mobbed the
00:19:14.980 city council meeting,
00:19:16.080 telling various
00:19:16.860 tales of patriarchal
00:19:18.600 and racist oppression
00:19:19.580 and demanding
00:19:20.640 that the local
00:19:21.520 government ban me.
00:19:24.080 These efforts,
00:19:25.120 as you might imagine,
00:19:26.160 didn't go anywhere.
00:19:28.160 America is still
00:19:28.960 a free country,
00:19:30.640 or sort of.
00:19:32.600 At least,
00:19:33.540 we can say
00:19:34.040 that you aren't
00:19:34.740 allowed to pass
00:19:35.720 laws against
00:19:36.540 people you don't like.
00:19:39.360 My enemies
00:19:40.200 then decided
00:19:40.840 to pass
00:19:41.520 a much
00:19:42.720 weaker resolution,
00:19:44.540 one that simply
00:19:45.300 declared the goodness
00:19:46.540 of diversity.
00:19:48.840 And in a chess
00:19:50.160 move that
00:19:50.860 still brings
00:19:51.840 a smile
00:19:52.360 to my face,
00:19:53.560 I publicly
00:19:54.360 endorsed
00:19:55.100 their call
00:19:56.180 for greater
00:19:56.740 inclusiveness.
00:20:00.040 Writing for
00:20:00.840 the local
00:20:01.180 paper and even
00:20:01.860 standing before
00:20:02.680 them in the
00:20:03.540 city council.
00:20:05.500 I'm able to
00:20:06.420 chuckle at this
00:20:07.200 episode now,
00:20:08.400 but the fact is,
00:20:09.700 living through it
00:20:10.940 became very
00:20:11.760 painful.
00:20:12.220 being the
00:20:14.280 subject of
00:20:15.240 a witch
00:20:15.700 hunt
00:20:16.080 means
00:20:16.860 alienation.
00:20:18.840 It means
00:20:19.520 not being
00:20:20.220 home in
00:20:20.980 your home.
00:20:22.660 It means
00:20:23.440 this surreal
00:20:24.360 feeling
00:20:25.260 of knowing
00:20:26.200 you're on
00:20:26.620 everyone else's
00:20:27.580 mind.
00:20:29.420 The suspicious
00:20:30.460 glances
00:20:31.120 and stares,
00:20:32.280 the polite
00:20:33.080 request that I
00:20:33.960 had not
00:20:34.360 returned to
00:20:35.300 their shop
00:20:35.860 anymore,
00:20:36.560 and the
00:20:37.820 knowledge that
00:20:38.480 nothing will
00:20:39.060 ever be the
00:20:39.600 same.
00:20:42.300 But enough
00:20:43.120 about me.
00:20:44.940 The real
00:20:45.760 question is
00:20:47.500 how do we
00:20:47.960 make sense
00:20:48.800 of all these
00:20:50.020 threads?
00:20:51.900 In the case
00:20:52.840 of Whitefish,
00:20:53.880 we see
00:20:54.540 something all
00:20:55.400 too familiar,
00:20:56.920 and almost
00:20:57.600 entirely all
00:20:59.080 white community
00:21:00.060 reacts
00:21:00.920 pathologically
00:21:01.960 to any
00:21:03.020 movement for
00:21:04.080 white consciousness
00:21:04.960 and survival,
00:21:06.240 or even to
00:21:07.460 any individual
00:21:08.680 who appears
00:21:09.680 to be racially
00:21:10.560 aware.
00:21:12.700 For me,
00:21:13.780 this kind
00:21:14.480 of antipathy
00:21:15.340 and hatred
00:21:16.100 towards us
00:21:16.940 should never
00:21:18.060 be understood
00:21:18.980 as just
00:21:20.220 some
00:21:20.580 misunderstanding.
00:21:22.660 They don't
00:21:23.080 know what
00:21:23.620 we really
00:21:24.080 stand for,
00:21:24.900 or we
00:21:25.200 haven't yet
00:21:25.740 given them
00:21:26.280 our best
00:21:27.080 argument or
00:21:27.840 our best
00:21:28.260 data set.
00:21:29.920 To the
00:21:30.660 contrary,
00:21:32.460 their hatred
00:21:33.200 points us
00:21:34.640 to the
00:21:35.020 nature of
00:21:35.920 guilt,
00:21:36.960 the nature
00:21:37.480 of morality,
00:21:38.160 the foundation
00:21:39.080 of religion,
00:21:40.320 and the
00:21:40.700 things that
00:21:41.240 make us
00:21:41.900 social animals.
00:21:44.600 These are
00:21:45.360 uncomfortable
00:21:46.020 topics for
00:21:46.900 modern people,
00:21:47.920 who like to
00:21:48.980 believe that
00:21:49.680 they're all
00:21:51.140 past all
00:21:51.920 that,
00:21:52.880 that they're
00:21:53.320 post-moral,
00:21:54.740 post-guilt,
00:21:55.620 post-shame.
00:21:57.580 For them,
00:21:58.380 religion is
00:21:59.000 just another
00:21:59.600 lifestyle choice,
00:22:01.300 like yoga,
00:22:03.020 or the
00:22:03.400 paleo diet,
00:22:04.900 something one
00:22:05.480 could try out
00:22:06.440 or not.
00:22:08.180 They close
00:22:08.900 their eyes
00:22:09.680 to the
00:22:10.100 reality that
00:22:11.020 morality,
00:22:12.240 guilt,
00:22:12.820 and shame
00:22:13.380 are much
00:22:14.360 more than
00:22:15.060 personal.
00:22:16.980 They are a
00:22:17.580 force of
00:22:18.120 social bonding
00:22:19.200 and social
00:22:20.000 hierarchy.
00:22:22.420 Sam
00:22:22.820 Francis was
00:22:23.600 deftly
00:22:24.140 perceptive when
00:22:24.980 he observed
00:22:25.620 that modern
00:22:26.640 people have
00:22:27.380 not really
00:22:27.940 dispensed with
00:22:29.100 morality and
00:22:29.960 religiosity like
00:22:31.420 they think
00:22:31.860 they have.
00:22:33.080 They've just
00:22:33.780 rearranged it
00:22:34.900 and swapped
00:22:35.640 out the
00:22:36.080 parts while
00:22:37.340 maintaining the
00:22:38.300 same intensity.
00:22:40.380 Sam noted
00:22:40.880 that for the
00:22:42.400 Victorians,
00:22:43.740 the great
00:22:44.280 taboo was
00:22:45.140 sex, and
00:22:46.800 they were,
00:22:47.640 from the
00:22:48.060 perspective of
00:22:48.620 the 21st
00:22:49.180 century,
00:22:49.820 profoundly
00:22:50.500 repressed.
00:22:52.680 Sexual acts
00:22:53.800 and identities
00:22:54.560 that are now
00:22:55.160 commonplace on
00:22:56.080 television were
00:22:57.400 criminalized by
00:22:58.620 the men of
00:22:58.980 the 19th
00:22:59.460 century, or
00:23:00.440 seen as signs
00:23:01.520 of insanity
00:23:02.360 were denied
00:23:03.600 altogether.
00:23:05.360 On the
00:23:06.180 other hand,
00:23:07.360 the Victorians
00:23:08.140 would speak
00:23:09.080 about the
00:23:09.980 biological reality
00:23:11.460 of race,
00:23:12.620 not to mention
00:23:13.300 eugenics and
00:23:14.340 breeding, in
00:23:15.620 frank, carefree
00:23:17.640 terms that
00:23:18.800 would utterly
00:23:19.360 horrify the
00:23:20.740 enlightened minds
00:23:21.800 of today.
00:23:24.280 Seen in this
00:23:25.040 light, modern
00:23:26.120 people have
00:23:26.900 become Victorians
00:23:28.660 about race.
00:23:29.520 race, they've
00:23:30.740 become Puritans
00:23:31.960 about race.
00:23:33.920 Race has
00:23:34.400 become the
00:23:34.760 very center of
00:23:35.740 their moral
00:23:36.440 universe in
00:23:37.620 the most
00:23:38.060 unhealthy
00:23:38.780 fashion, so
00:23:40.600 much so that
00:23:41.460 the Rotherham
00:23:42.480 Town Council
00:23:43.440 was unable to
00:23:44.440 protect children
00:23:45.540 lest they
00:23:46.800 violate that
00:23:47.840 unspeakable
00:23:48.760 great taboo.
00:23:51.720 And we must
00:23:52.420 recognize that
00:23:53.560 this morality
00:23:54.400 of white guilt
00:23:55.680 would not be
00:23:57.380 nearly as
00:23:58.660 powerful and
00:23:59.740 successful as
00:24:01.200 it is, if
00:24:02.260 whites didn't
00:24:03.080 at some level
00:24:03.920 really believe
00:24:05.420 in it.
00:24:07.340 Put another
00:24:08.180 way, white
00:24:09.840 guilt could not
00:24:10.680 have triumphed
00:24:11.640 over whites
00:24:12.320 if whites
00:24:13.280 lacked that
00:24:14.380 special capacity
00:24:15.700 of becoming
00:24:16.860 their own
00:24:17.660 worst enemy.
00:24:19.900 This is the
00:24:21.000 manner in which
00:24:21.920 white guilt
00:24:22.580 functions as
00:24:23.900 guilt, that
00:24:25.160 is, as a
00:24:25.940 personal moral
00:24:27.020 experience.
00:24:29.040 Any animal
00:24:30.680 can feel shame.
00:24:32.620 My dog
00:24:33.580 feels shame
00:24:34.680 whenever I'm
00:24:36.720 capable of
00:24:37.420 actually
00:24:37.820 disciplining that
00:24:43.400 lovable creature.
00:24:45.660 Caught in the
00:24:46.480 act, he will
00:24:47.400 assume the
00:24:48.520 prone and
00:24:49.320 penitent posture
00:24:50.360 of a devout
00:24:51.360 monk.
00:24:53.840 Shame is based
00:24:54.560 on fear.
00:24:55.160 guilt, on the
00:24:57.320 other hand, is
00:24:58.580 shame when
00:24:59.940 one is alone.
00:25:01.740 Guilt is shame
00:25:02.740 without fear of
00:25:04.100 a master or
00:25:05.020 tribal elder.
00:25:06.920 Guilt is
00:25:07.400 disembodied shame,
00:25:09.040 internalized shame.
00:25:11.320 Guilt is our
00:25:11.860 ability to punish
00:25:13.020 ourselves.
00:25:15.160 And this
00:25:15.560 psychic violence
00:25:16.860 we are able to
00:25:17.880 inflict is what
00:25:19.280 we call our
00:25:20.120 conscience.
00:25:20.580 sins.
00:25:22.740 In a notable
00:25:24.060 book, Paul
00:25:25.240 Godfrey
00:25:25.780 understood modern
00:25:26.860 white guilt as
00:25:28.220 a kind of skewed
00:25:29.220 form of
00:25:29.880 Protestantism, with
00:25:31.760 slavery or the
00:25:32.700 Holocaust replacing
00:25:33.820 original sin.
00:25:35.980 But the white
00:25:36.740 man's ability to
00:25:37.840 inflict guilt on
00:25:39.320 himself goes back
00:25:40.600 much further, well
00:25:42.160 before Protestantism,
00:25:43.480 to the dawn of
00:25:44.400 Christianity in
00:25:45.260 Europe, and it
00:25:46.240 actually points to
00:25:47.320 something eternal
00:25:48.320 in ourselves.
00:25:50.800 In Beowulf, the
00:25:52.600 first great piece
00:25:53.660 of old English
00:25:54.640 culture from
00:25:55.960 950 AD, the
00:25:57.500 narrator relates,
00:26:00.460 that was sorrow
00:26:01.920 to the good man's
00:26:03.080 soul, greatest of
00:26:04.480 griefs to the
00:26:05.560 heart.
00:26:07.180 The wise man
00:26:08.280 thought that
00:26:08.960 breaking established
00:26:10.160 law, he had
00:26:11.700 bitterly angered
00:26:12.940 God, the Lord
00:26:14.500 everlasting.
00:26:15.100 His breast was
00:26:16.860 troubled from
00:26:17.640 within by dark
00:26:19.240 thoughts, as
00:26:21.360 was not his
00:26:22.080 want.
00:26:23.940 In this scene,
00:26:25.160 Beowulf is alone,
00:26:27.500 and yet he is
00:26:28.500 troubled by these
00:26:29.420 internal dark
00:26:30.560 thoughts about his
00:26:31.820 honor.
00:26:33.840 What kind of dark
00:26:35.000 thoughts haunt us?
00:26:39.240 We might be able
00:26:40.640 to glimpse, off in
00:26:42.840 the distance, another
00:26:44.640 version of
00:26:45.480 ourselves, with
00:26:46.960 another morality, one
00:26:49.700 that is utterly
00:26:50.580 immune to white
00:26:51.840 guilt, in fact, to
00:26:53.580 guilt in general.
00:26:57.100 There was a time in
00:26:58.720 our history when we
00:27:00.160 practiced what Nietzsche
00:27:01.380 called master
00:27:02.260 morality, a morality
00:27:04.320 that is self-contained
00:27:05.940 in a way that only an
00:27:07.760 aristocratic morality
00:27:09.000 can be.
00:27:09.820 we are we, we are
00:27:14.800 strong, we rule, we
00:27:17.940 are good.
00:27:19.960 They are other, they
00:27:22.220 are weak, they are
00:27:24.420 bad.
00:27:26.620 The greatest
00:27:27.800 revolution in morality
00:27:29.640 occurred when these
00:27:30.880 basic, natural, unthinking
00:27:33.240 assumptions were brought
00:27:34.540 into question.
00:27:35.300 when we began doubting
00:27:37.360 ourselves and giving
00:27:39.320 legitimacy and honor
00:27:41.320 to the other.
00:27:43.660 Some of us might long
00:27:45.460 for a return to that
00:27:47.580 old master morality,
00:27:50.580 perhaps today in the
00:27:52.320 form of an unthinking,
00:27:54.360 affirmative nationalism.
00:27:55.720 But I doubt anything
00:27:58.740 like that is possible
00:28:00.180 or desirable.
00:28:02.780 And we shouldn't
00:28:03.840 underestimate how
00:28:05.620 our conscience, our
00:28:07.740 self-questioning,
00:28:09.100 self-doubting,
00:28:09.960 self-loathing mechanism
00:28:11.420 has made us deep
00:28:13.120 and made us
00:28:14.440 interesting.
00:28:16.060 And we shouldn't
00:28:17.100 underestimate the
00:28:17.840 degree to which we
00:28:18.680 will need our
00:28:19.600 conscience in the
00:28:21.080 future to confront
00:28:22.800 the great challenges
00:28:24.080 of this new
00:28:25.220 century, which are
00:28:26.680 not the sexual
00:28:28.000 hot buttons of
00:28:29.480 contemporary
00:28:29.960 conservatism, but
00:28:31.900 the question of how
00:28:32.860 we can become
00:28:33.500 guardians of the
00:28:34.500 natural world and
00:28:36.160 the creatures that
00:28:36.960 live in it and
00:28:38.400 restrict our
00:28:39.340 unrelenting economic
00:28:41.400 and industrial will
00:28:42.660 to power.
00:28:44.740 But we shouldn't
00:28:46.040 forget that the
00:28:47.820 Jews and early
00:28:48.540 Christians who, at
00:28:49.940 the dawn of this
00:28:50.820 new age, said
00:28:52.900 that the meek
00:28:53.660 shall inherit the
00:28:54.600 earth, that the
00:28:55.780 first shall be
00:28:56.440 last, and that
00:28:57.780 there is righteous
00:28:58.500 and the most
00:28:59.040 pitiable, that
00:29:00.640 they were waging
00:29:01.620 war against their
00:29:03.100 masters, their
00:29:04.780 other embodied by
00:29:06.400 Rome, and making
00:29:08.120 them doubt
00:29:08.680 themselves.
00:29:10.820 In turn, we
00:29:12.180 shouldn't forget
00:29:12.820 that there is a
00:29:13.540 fundamental asymmetry
00:29:15.200 to the white guilt
00:29:16.400 phenomenon.
00:29:17.980 There is a
00:29:19.000 difference between
00:29:19.960 being sick with
00:29:21.300 guilt, being
00:29:22.400 decadent, as so
00:29:23.860 many millions of
00:29:24.860 white people are,
00:29:26.260 and, on the other
00:29:27.160 hand, promoting
00:29:28.500 white guilt as a
00:29:30.120 means of making
00:29:31.280 your enemy sick and
00:29:33.040 decadent.
00:29:35.220 Why do they hate
00:29:36.520 us?
00:29:38.220 The fact is, our
00:29:39.720 enemies are giddy
00:29:41.460 imagining a world
00:29:42.940 without us, as do
00:29:45.620 so many whites
00:29:46.520 embrace their own
00:29:47.640 oblivion.
00:29:50.000 White guilt is the
00:29:51.420 foundational morality
00:29:52.940 of this global
00:29:54.420 transformation we are
00:29:55.680 now experiencing, what
00:29:57.540 could be called the
00:29:58.600 great erasure.
00:30:00.560 It is a transformation
00:30:01.900 of a world created and
00:30:04.020 once dominated by
00:30:05.180 Europeans into a
00:30:07.100 world with many
00:30:08.380 European shapes and
00:30:09.880 forms, democracy,
00:30:11.980 feminism, free love,
00:30:13.620 and the iPhone, but a
00:30:16.520 world without
00:30:17.480 Europeans in it.
00:30:20.400 In other words, sit
00:30:22.480 down and let us
00:30:23.820 abolish you.
00:30:26.400 Opposing this coming
00:30:27.860 world and offering
00:30:29.760 alternatives to it is
00:30:31.920 the mission of our
00:30:33.260 movement.
00:30:35.320 In order to achieve
00:30:37.220 this, in order to
00:30:39.040 fight, we must learn
00:30:42.240 to rise and greet
00:30:44.220 the dawn with a
00:30:45.620 clear conscience.
00:30:47.320 Thank you very
00:30:47.840 much.
00:30:48.100 Thank you.
