00:00:00.000 Hello, my friends. Joel Pollack is one of the smartest observers around. We're lucky to have
00:00:04.000 him on the show today to talk about the U.S. midterm elections. That's ahead.
00:00:23.200 Tonight, is Donald Trump going to win the U.S. midterms? And more to the point,
00:00:27.200 Who's going to be president in 2028?
00:00:30.320 It's November 2nd, and this is The Ezra LeVant Show.
00:00:33.440 You're fighting for freedom.
00:00:36.280 Shame on you, you censorious bug.
00:00:48.200 Well, tomorrow night is the midterm elections, and I'm terrified the polls suggest that Donald
00:00:53.920 Trump's Republicans may well lose the House and even the Senate, which would, I think, unleash a
00:01:02.160 torrent of recalls and impeachments and investigations and stymie some of the appointments that Trump
00:01:10.480 would like to make in his final two years as president. That's my thought from Canada, but
00:01:14.480 let's go to a man right in the heart of it, Joel Pollack, who's the opinion editor of the California
00:01:19.140 Post, who follows the Democrats quite closely. Joel, great to see you again. Am I right to be
00:01:25.420 nervous as a supporter of Donald Trump? Is it going to be a reckoning tomorrow?
00:01:31.340 We don't really know. And I think the Democrats have a good chance of taking the House, but
00:01:35.860 it's not really a guarantee. Nothing really is guaranteed. There has been so much gerrymandering
00:01:40.960 in this election and redrawing of districts that it's not really clear who's going to win.
00:01:45.580 Keep in mind, the Republicans only have a very small majority in the House right now,
00:01:49.360 so it would not take very much to shift the House over to Democratic control.
00:01:54.460 The Senate is a different story, and there it's a fight on multiple fronts.
00:01:59.500 If the Democrats take both houses, then there will be a solid united front against the Trump administration,
00:02:05.540 and you can't really see much more getting done legislatively out of this administration,
00:02:11.380 although he hasn't really been relying on Congress for most of the steps he's been taking.
00:02:15.880 A lot of what Trump has been doing has been unilateral through executive actions.
00:02:20.100 So he will continue to do that.
00:02:22.460 Congress will try to reel him in, and it will just be an endless fight going on for a couple of years leading into the presidential election.
00:02:30.960 Not clear if Democrats will do what they did last time and try to impeach him.
00:02:34.120 They certainly might try.
00:02:35.720 They will also try to block his judicial nominees if they take the Senate.
00:02:39.220 it really is up in the air. But I would say this just as someone who was supportive of the
00:02:45.180 president. He has achieved already in his first two years almost everything he promised to achieve.
00:02:51.100 And the difficulty is that there were things that he encountered that turned out to be a little bit
00:02:56.780 more complicated than it seemed at first, especially in foreign policy. It was plausible
00:03:02.720 to believe that as soon as the United States had leadership, that Russia and Ukraine might sit down
00:03:07.580 and actually have peace talks. But it was ironically the prospect of peace that led
00:03:11.680 Putin to become more aggressive. Now, Ukraine appears to be a little bit more conciliatory,
00:03:16.020 so something might emerge. But this is one example. There are a few other issues. Tariffs,
00:03:20.300 for example, ended up being very thorny. They did help some industries, but they also created
00:03:25.300 some upward pressure on goods, which didn't help inflation. It didn't really hurt inflation that
00:03:29.420 much, but not a good thing to do when part of your mandate is to lower consumer prices.
00:03:35.360 Overall, though, I think you'd have to look at his first two years as a success in terms of what he promised his voters.
00:03:41.120 And so we'll see what happens.
00:03:42.260 The Democrats have responded by nominating a slate of candidates across the country that includes some of the most radical people ever to run for office in this country.
00:03:50.720 And so if the Republicans have a chance at holding at least the Senate, it will be because Democrats overplayed their hand and went with some pretty radical people.
00:03:59.900 Well, that's what scares me.
00:04:00.760 I look at Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, who, I mean, there are moderate Muslims, there are liberal Muslims. 0.96
00:04:09.260 I truly believe that he is a radical Muslim Brotherhood style Trojan horse. 0.74
00:04:15.740 And I don't say that based on his ethnicity or that he reads the Koran. 0.93
00:04:20.480 It's his statements, his family statements, who he's campaigned with. 0.99
00:04:25.620 I regard him as far more dangerous than Ilhan Omar, who in her own way is just foolish and almost a clown. 0.93
00:04:34.980 But I think Abdul El-Sayed is deadly serious, even more so than Zoran Memdani in New York. 0.65
00:04:41.060 What do you think about his chances?
00:04:43.320 Because the polls I was looking at look fairly strong for him.
00:04:48.420 I might regret saying this after Election Day, but I don't think he's going to win.
00:04:51.940 But I think that the voters of Michigan are not quite a vote for him.
00:04:56.500 And the upper Midwest turns out to be very difficult to poll.
00:05:00.860 In previous races, you've seen that the Democrats have vastly underperformed their polls.
00:05:07.420 And I think you're going to see that again.
00:05:09.440 El-Sayed is just too aggressive. 0.82
00:05:11.620 Leave aside the Islamic stuff and the Muslim Brotherhood stuff and the far left-wing policies.
00:05:18.860 He has an aggressive demeanor that has come out in the last few weeks when he's been challenged in some of his policies and associations that I think is a real turnoff to voters.
00:05:27.380 And ultimately, it turned off one voter in particular named Haley Stevens, who was the Democrat member of Congress who ran against him in the primary.
00:05:35.520 And she had endorsed him after she lost him, but she has now withdrawn her endorsement and she's backing the Republican Mike Rogers.
00:05:42.440 I just think his bedside manner, you know, to borrow a medical term, even though he's not actually a licensed physician, his bedside manner leaves a lot to be desired. 0.82
00:05:51.080 Voters don't want someone who's aggressive, who yells, who's Xiaohi. 0.52
00:05:55.020 I think that he has lost sight of the people he's trying to represent.
00:05:58.420 He's very smooth.
00:05:59.660 He looks very good.
00:06:01.100 Wears the muscle T-shirts, you know, to appeal to some people.
00:06:04.060 I don't blame him for doing that.
00:06:05.340 He's got to do whatever you do to win.
00:06:07.240 But where he has really gone wrong is when he's asked difficult questions, unlike Barack Obama or even James Tallarico, who might win in Texas, he doesn't roll with it.
00:06:17.100 He doesn't use a kind of verbal jujitsu to empathize while also giving the kind of answer he wants.
00:06:23.760 He attacks the questioner.
00:06:25.540 And I think it's a huge mistake.
00:06:26.820 And somebody close to him ought to really tell him not to do that. 0.95
00:06:29.940 But maybe he damn told him he doesn't listen. 0.52
00:06:32.200 But I think it could cost him swing votes. 0.98
00:06:34.000 I think it's going to cost him the votes of some women. 0.94
00:06:35.580 And I can't see him winning. If he does win, then there was so much anger in the electorate against Trump that it was a foregone conclusion and it didn't matter who they ran. But I do think that he is in trouble at Michigan. And I think the Haley Stevens switch on the last weekend before Election Day could really affect the result and perhaps the control of the Senate.
00:06:53.360 Wow. You mentioned James Tallarico. He's a candidate running in Texas. And to me, the idea that Texas might turn Democrat is so contrary to the way the world ought to be.
00:07:06.280 I mean, I know in the past, of course, it has been Democrat, but a different kind of Democrat, an LBJ Democrat, let's say the idea that a woke left, you know, like some of his statements are so college professor left wing radical and even his personal style.
00:07:26.880 But he, like Abdul El-Syed, is polling very strongly.
00:07:31.900 I just can't believe that Texas might turn Democrat. 0.64
00:07:35.640 Tell me what's going on there.
00:07:38.000 Well, in Texas, it's not so much about James Tallarico's strength as about Ken Paxton's weakness.
00:07:43.080 Ken Paxton is a very flawed candidate.
00:07:44.820 He ran against a weak incumbent, John Cornyn.
00:07:47.880 John Cornyn was unpopular because he had taken a number of moderate stances that were at odds with what the conservative base wanted.
00:07:54.580 And he had done so repeatedly and sort of stuck his thumb in the eye of Republicans.
00:07:58.760 He had been very liberal on immigration reform, for example.
00:08:01.900 So he really had fallen out of touch with his base.
00:08:05.200 But the challenge that came from Ken Paxton might be a little too much for many Texas voters to swallow.
00:08:12.480 Ken Paxton had had some ethical questions.
00:08:14.700 He was acquitted by the legislature when he was impeached.
00:08:17.360 But he was impeached as a state office holder.
00:08:21.300 And he is a guy with a lot of baggage. And so I think that if Tallarico wins Texas, it's largely because Republicans just couldn't stomach Ken Paxton.
00:08:32.880 Having said that, I don't think Tallarico's chances are that good. And I do think Texas will probably barely stay in the Republican column.
00:08:41.200 Again, I could eat those words on Wednesday or Thursday, but as you mentioned, Tallarico really just does not represent Texas in any kind of cultural way.
00:08:49.260 It's very hard to think of Texas electing a guy who believes that there are six genders and God might be non-binary.
00:08:55.120 The fact that he's walking it all back right now just makes him look inauthentic.
00:08:57.940 So I don't know that he's got what it takes.
00:09:00.940 I think if the Democrats had run someone a little stronger, perhaps they might have had a chance or a better chance.
00:09:05.680 You know, he could win.
00:09:07.160 And if he does, it'll be because of the defections from Republicans.
00:09:10.180 But, you know, again, there's a lot of sentiment in this election. And it's almost because Trump did a good job relative to his promises than rather than because he did a bad job.
00:09:23.240 I mean, I think what happens in American politics is when you have a very energetic president, whether on the left or the right, it excites an opposition that's equally energetic.
00:09:31.800 And you saw that with Obama in the Tea Party wave of 2010.
00:09:36.420 Obama wasn't a particularly effective president, but it was very energetic.
00:09:39.820 And passing Obamacare was a huge achievement for Democrats.
00:09:42.440 And that triggered a huge response from Republicans.
00:09:45.800 And I think we're seeing the same thing among Democrats, that they are so incensed at the fact that Trump is able to do some of these things, even if they might be good for the country, like securing the border and that type of thing.
00:09:56.280 they're so energized by that fact that it almost doesn't matter whether Trump is doing a good job
00:10:00.820 or a bad job. They don't like the fact that he's doing a job. So they get mobilized. And I think
00:10:05.780 that's just part of the American temperament. We don't like being governed. So when we see someone
00:10:09.540 else governing in an energetic way, it increases our desire to do the governing. And I think it's
00:10:15.080 a bit of a pendulum effect as well. I've become a single issue voter. I just have to say,
00:10:20.500 especially after my travels to Europe, which I do quite frequently, I believe that immigration is
00:10:25.580 more important than every other issue combined and in fact it impacts every other issue combined
00:10:31.340 from crime to housing to inflation and troublingly to cultural misfit and i was recently in paris
00:10:40.640 during the riots and you know i just see what happens especially with immigration from deeply
00:10:48.200 anti-semitic countries we see that in canada too by the way um will donald trump be able
00:10:55.480 to hold the line, given that the ICE and a lot of the border control is within his executive power.
00:11:02.660 Will he be able to hold the line on immigration, even if he does lose the House and the Senate?
00:11:08.480 I think so. I think that he's going to be able to use his executive authority to keep the border
00:11:13.000 patrol on the case. And I think the border will remain secure. What happened after 2028 is
00:11:19.520 anybody's guess. But I do think that Trump will be able to secure the border. And I think if the
00:11:25.640 Democrats refuse to fund Border Patrol, although I think it's fully funded now through 2030,
00:11:30.980 I think if they refuse to fund it or they try to pull a shutdown like they did last time they took
00:11:35.400 Congress while he was president, I think it's going to backfire because this time he has shown
00:11:40.260 he really can do it, that all it took to secure the border was political will. You know, we were
00:11:44.240 told for so many years by Joe Biden, press secretary, that we could not have a secure
00:11:49.080 border until we had comprehensive immigration reform. It was a form of blackmail, really,
00:11:53.580 for extortions. They were saying, we won't do our constitutional duty to secure the border
00:11:58.100 unless we get this legislation passed that would allow millions of illegal aliens to become
00:12:03.000 citizens to vote for us. And that's just not a deal Republicans are willing to make, and rightly so. 1.00
00:12:09.180 Trump's come in and said, look, all you needed was someone who could actually enforce the law
00:12:12.060 and free the Border Patrol to do their jobs. He did that. So now you have a secure border,
00:12:16.320 And you haven't had to pass any legislation. So I'm like you, actually. I'm a one issue voter. I was certainly in 2024. The border was my issue because I care a lot about other things. And, you know, I care a lot about Israel and Jewish Americans.
00:12:28.280 But the problem in the United States with anti-Semitism and anti-Israel sentiment was coming from new arrivals to the country, or if not the arrivals themselves, certainly the first generation, which hit university campuses and decided that what made it reconcile their Western identity and their Muslim identity was to go for the anti-Israel movement, which exists still very much on the fringes of both left and right.
00:12:51.620 But it was the way they would try to pull together these two worlds that I suppose in their ordinary personal lives were constantly at odds with one another.
00:12:59.940 And that's El-Sayed, by the way.
00:13:01.420 I mean, El-Sayed played football.
00:13:03.880 You know, he's very American in other ways and yet supported the Muslim Brotherhood in a letter in 2012 urging him to purge the police in Egypt.
00:13:12.600 What does he care about what the Muslim Brotherhood does in Egypt?
00:13:15.220 But, you know, I think he is trying to reconcile his two identities through this left wing politics.
00:13:21.080 And that's where the problem is.
00:13:22.660 And in this country, in the United States, there are two commitments that this country has made to Jewish Americans.
00:13:28.280 One is a foundational commitment by George Washington in that wonderful document, A Letter to the Jewish Community at Newport, in which he promised that Jews would never have to feel afraid in the United States.
00:13:39.800 That's a commitment from George Washington.
00:13:41.520 It's important to members of other faiths as well, because in that letter, George Washington outlines his view of religious freedom generally.
00:13:47.140 So it's not just a kind of private or parochial promise to the Jewish community.
00:13:51.400 It's a general statement of religious tolerance.
00:13:53.460 Nobody should be afraid of religious violence.
00:13:55.780 And the other commitment is one that was made in the 20th century, which is that the United States of Israel would be as close as two allies can possibly be. 0.83
00:14:04.120 And in comes a new population over the last 20 years, 30 years, perhaps, and decides that they're going to violate both of these commitments.
00:14:12.160 Well, it doesn't work that way.
00:14:13.380 You don't get to come here and overturn something that was hard fought by a community that contributed to this country, that fought for its place in this country, that fought discrimination for years.
00:14:23.660 A community whose path, in many ways, blazed the path for the Muslim community.
00:14:28.220 I mean, I had a friend once in San Francisco who was representing a Pakistani immigrant in an immigration proceeding.
00:14:37.600 And she said, I wonder if he knows I'm Jewish.
00:14:40.200 And I wonder if he knew what he would think about that.
00:14:43.380 Jews have often been at the forefront of defending new immigrants
00:14:46.620 and sometimes, I think, to our detriment
00:14:49.280 because some of the new arrivals have been hostile to
00:14:52.580 Jewish state and the Jewish community. I think that
00:14:55.440 the Muslim community needs better leadership
00:14:58.520 and it needs leadership that says, hang on a minute, we have to learn 1.00
00:15:01.540 how to live with this pre-existing environment. You don't have to like everything about it
00:15:04.620 but this is how the United States works.
00:15:07.600 We have a strong relationship with Israel as a fellow democracy,
00:15:09.880 as a Judeo-Christian civilization.
00:15:12.500 And the idea of intimidating Jews
00:15:14.500 by protesting outside synagogues and Jewish schools
00:15:17.320 is completely beyond the pale.
00:15:19.360 And yet that's how Mamdani and his allies
00:15:21.940 like to express themselves.
00:15:23.300 So, you know, we have this problem
00:15:26.000 and it starts at the border.
00:15:26.960 So I'm with you on that one.
00:15:28.440 I know you have to run.
00:15:29.680 It's such a busy 48 hours for you down there.
00:15:32.180 But let me ask you a closing question
00:15:34.240 because, of course, the minute these midterms are done,
00:15:38.040 eyes will turn to the next election. I mean, in a way, when you're in your last term of your last
00:15:45.420 year as president, you're called a lame duck. Now, I don't think Donald Trump is going to be lame 0.75
00:15:49.140 at all. I think he's going to fight to the end. But all of a sudden, J.D. Vance, Marco Rubio,
00:15:56.400 Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom, well, it's their time to shine. Give me, I believe that one or both of
00:16:05.120 the Houses are going to go to the Democrats.
00:16:07.160 Give me a super quick look ahead to what we can expect
00:16:10.940 from the four contenders I've just outlined.
00:16:15.880 J.D. Vance will not be president of the United States.
00:16:19.320 He cannot win an election.
00:16:21.360 He can win the nomination, but he can't win a general election.
00:16:24.340 He's just disliked very strongly by too many people across the spectrum,
00:16:28.600 and he doesn't have the pull that Trump has.
00:16:30.280 I think that he's in a pole position to win the nomination because he has early endorsements from people like Turning Point USA.
00:16:39.580 He also has kind of, if you want to call it, paleoconservative wing that supports him.
00:16:46.300 But he is not a coalition builder.
00:16:48.600 Among his many virtues, and I think he's a person with great political courage and obviously very brilliant.
00:16:54.440 He's just not a coalition builder.
00:16:55.980 He's not great at making groups feel like he speaks for them as well.
00:17:00.140 And maybe that's part of being vice president.
00:17:03.120 You always seem a little bit secondary to the president.
00:17:06.000 But I just cannot see him winning a general election.
00:17:09.900 Whether he wins the nomination will depend on whether another Republican emerges to make that case strongly enough and quickly enough where he loses support and you can see people consolidating behind another Republican.
00:17:20.940 I think Marco Rubio would be a shoo-in both for the nomination and for the presidency, but he's already said he's not running.
00:17:26.240 And I think he just may not want to rock the boat right now because he knows that it would be a very bruising internal fight if he ran for the presidency right now.
00:17:36.580 Ted Cruz is almost certainly running, and he will prosecute the case against J.D. Vance.
00:17:40.260 I don't know that he'll do any better than he did when he ran against Trump in 2016.
00:17:45.900 But we could also see other Republicans emerge as possible contenders.
00:17:49.380 We just don't know who they are yet.
00:17:50.380 On the Democratic side, Gavin Newsom is, in my world, the frontrunner, even though the polls say maybe he's in second or third place. He represents experience in governing, even if it's not great experience. He governs the biggest state, one of the most important Democratic states. And he is very good at cultivating an image of competence, even if not a reality. So I think he's in the prime position to secure the nomination.
00:18:15.540 Right now, the polls say, even in California, AOC, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is the favorite choice. That's because the left is very, very active, and they're very much into political authenticity. Mainstream establishment politicians don't exude authenticity. They exude compromise. They exude a kind of convenience and pragmatism that is not in vogue at the moment.
00:18:38.700 But AOC really doesn't know what she's doing, ever.
00:18:41.920 And so I don't think she's really a candidate that can win a general election.
00:18:45.620 I think there are enough Democrats who know that.
00:18:47.680 So I think Newsom becomes the default after a while.
00:18:50.040 There are other Democrats who will come out of the workbook.
00:18:52.800 Kamala Harris has no chance because she lost last time. 0.85
00:18:55.340 And donors aren't going to rally behind someone who lost.
00:18:58.040 So I think Gavin Newsom is still the odds-on favorite.
00:19:00.960 Pete Buttigieg, also just no track record of doing anything successfully.
00:19:06.500 He was a poor mayor of South Bend.
00:19:08.420 He was a terrible secretary of transportation.
00:19:10.820 He was AWOL on the job for two months while he was on fraternity leave that he only announced later in the middle of a cargo crisis. 0.97
00:19:17.640 I mean, he basically is just incompetent.
00:19:20.140 Very highly trained, great resume, all of that, incapable of doing anything.
00:19:25.580 So I think it's going to come down to Gavin Newsom versus whoever the Republicans put up.
00:19:30.300 If it's Gavin Newsom versus J.D. Vance, Gavin Newsom will be your next president.
00:19:33.460 If it's Gavin Newsom versus Marco Rubio, Rubio wins 40 states and he's your next president.
00:19:37.840 Wow.
00:19:38.420 Well, that's a lot to think about, Joel.
00:19:41.760 It's great to see you.
00:19:42.600 I'm going to let you go because you're so busy.
00:19:44.120 Joel Pollack, opinion editor of the California Post.
00:19:48.120 Good luck, and we'll follow along.
00:19:59.020 Well, it's almost Remembrance Day,
00:20:01.100 and a crazy act of vandalism happened against the Legion.
00:20:06.040 My friend David Menzies was on the scene here.
00:20:07.680 Take a look.
00:20:08.420 David Menzies for Rebel News here in New Hamburg Ontario and folks I'm standing outside
00:20:16.220 Legion Branch number 532 and if you had to give a headline to this story I think it would be this
00:20:25.860 how low can you go and what I mean by that folks is that recently a memorial banner here in New
00:20:35.340 Hamburg honoring a Canadian soldier who gave his life serving Canada was actually vandalized with
00:20:44.320 spray paint. Private Tyler Todd died in 2010 in Afghanistan due to an improvised explosive device
00:20:52.540 and a banner marking the ultimate sacrifice of Private Todd had been raised here just prior to
00:21:01.900 Remembrance Day. The banner was one of 281 on display in New Hamburg as well as nearby Plattsville
00:21:11.740 and Wellesley honouring those veterans who served their country. Now that seems to me
00:21:19.560 a wonderful thing to do to honour our veterans in such a way but if you can imagine some people
00:21:28.320 had a problem with this, and so it was Private Todd's banner was vandalized. Now, there is some
00:21:36.620 security footage of what happened around 2 a.m. on October 24th. Here, check it out. Now, he reached
00:21:45.360 out to the Waterloo Police Service, and there is an ongoing investigation into this crime.
00:21:52.620 a spokeswoman stated, quote, we conducted a comprehensive and extensive canvas of the area
00:22:00.140 and are reviewing several CCTV videos that were obtained. The Waterloo Regional Police Service
00:22:10.300 will not tolerate acts of vandalism targeting memorials or signs that honour our veterans
00:22:17.540 and fallen military members. These acts are deeply disrespectful to those who served and
00:22:24.880 sacrificed for our country, and we are treating this investigation with the seriousness it
00:22:31.940 deserves. But folks, if you can believe it, the banner desecration was merely the latest act
00:22:39.260 of vandalism against veterans in New Hamburg. Back in August, someone or some people vandalized
00:22:48.680 the local cenotaph here. Of note, the names of prominent leftist individuals and organizations
00:22:56.240 were written on the cenotaph. This includes federal NDP leader Avi Lewis, author Naomi Klein,
00:23:03.800 And commentator Hassan Piker, by the way, Piker is that American kook commentator who once stated that, quote, America deserved 9-11, end quote.
00:23:17.180 Unbelievable.
00:23:18.860 Now, also amongst the graffiti were the initials DSA, which is presumably a reference to the Democratic Socialists of America.
00:23:28.620 That would be that cabal of Marxists and Islamists who seem to be unofficially running the Democratic Party these days.
00:23:38.160 In any event, my cameraman Mitch and I have traveled to New Hamburg.
00:23:42.700 It's a small town of 15,000, about 90 minutes west of Toronto.
00:23:48.380 And here we are at the local Legion branch.
00:23:51.500 let's see if we can find someone here at the Legion that wants to weigh in on this grotesque
00:23:58.540 vandalization. Well folks, I'm with Bob Neubauer. He is the Veterans Service Officer here at the
00:24:07.640 New Hamburg Legion. And Bob, I gotta ask you, what is going on in this town? First, the desecration
00:24:18.700 of that banner honoring private todd and in august um the cenotaph being vandalized and
00:24:28.720 this is a small town of 15 000 people who has a problem with remembrance day and remembering
00:24:37.220 our great warriors that made the ultimate sacrifice i really wish i had answers to any
00:24:45.260 those questions we're a small rural town in ontario remembrance day is a big deal for us
00:24:57.180 why someone would want to desecrate first of all a cenotaph last august and now a memorial banner
00:25:07.340 especially for a young Canadian lad who was killed on April 11th in 2010 in Afghanistan.
00:25:17.620 He was born and raised in Bright, Ontario, not too far out of New Hamburg.
00:25:25.060 But because they don't have a legion there, we've sort of adopted his cause
00:25:29.440 and we got permission from his family to produce a banner.
00:25:34.400 and he went in a place of honor right at the corners of the main streets in town
00:25:42.860 along with another young lad who died in service a couple years ago Danny's there
00:25:50.360 I don't know why someone would be would have a problem with with any of the banners but
00:25:57.900 much less that one but here we are you know it's inexplicable to me i mean i i personally have a
00:26:05.640 problem of so many people who don't wear the poppy uh come remembrance day but at the end of the day
00:26:11.740 it's your choice i suppose but to i don't know do some kind of political or ideological agenda
00:26:17.840 to carry out acts of vandalism against our veterans i think bob that's beyond the pale
00:26:24.660 Well, I'd have to agree. I don't see any kind of a defense that someone could make, you know, if they ever did get caught.
00:26:32.980 I don't know what their defense would be other than just, you know, raising pure hell and causing a lot of dismay
00:26:41.220 and a lot of problems for a family that just has had their share of heartaches in the past, and they just don't need any more, you know.
00:26:50.180 It's grotesque. Tell me, the desecration of Private Todd's memorial, was there anything said, or was it just so much spray paint desecrating it?
00:27:02.160 It's hard to tell. I can show you the banner. It's in my van. It appears as though they tried to write Me Too.
00:27:13.820 Me Too?
00:27:14.460 I have no idea what the connection is to a banner. No idea. It's just, you know, we're looking at it as vandalism. People are saying maybe it should be a hate crime, and I'm not sure I disagree with that.
00:27:30.640 You know, we can only speculate. Is this someone or some people, because I understand two individuals were caught on security camera footage.
00:27:42.800 Is this somebody with a grievance against the Canadian military or is it something personal they had with Private Todd?
00:27:53.920 because i see so many banners it's a beautiful display of so many wonderful veterans um do you
00:28:00.560 i guess what i'm getting at bob do you think there would be any reason why they would have
00:28:05.840 targeted private todd's banner yes out of the 260 odd banners that we have up
00:28:15.760 the one for private todd as i mentioned earlier is a special location at the four corners in
00:28:22.400 in downtown New Hamburg.
00:28:24.740 Right below his banner and that of Donnie's Air,
00:28:29.240 there was a trash can with a heavy metal lid on it.
00:28:33.240 And I think just they got on top of the trash can,
00:28:38.320 stood on top of that, they were able to reach the banner,
00:28:41.980 spray the paint on there, and it just happened to be,
00:28:45.760 if the trash can hadn't been there,
00:28:48.060 probably they would not have damaged his banner.
00:28:51.720 just an unfortunate event gotcha so uh it was a matter of logistics i guess uh they were able to
00:28:57.620 raise themselves up to the height of the bend um also when we look at the vandalism of the cenotaph
00:29:03.460 back in um august um what you couldn't help but notice was um the names of those on the left
00:29:13.840 into the cenotaph, NDP leader Avi Lewis, Naomi Klein, DSA, Democratic Socialists of America.
00:29:26.500 I don't know what that has to do with Canada and the Legion and veterans. But what do you make of
00:29:34.560 that? I'm not sure that the two events are even related. They could be, of course. The desecration
00:29:43.820 at the memorial was all done with a black sharpie pen the desecration of the banners and and a couple
00:29:52.640 of the benches for the bus stops and that sort of thing now is all done with a can of spray paint
00:29:58.660 i'm not sure that there's a connection i didn't see anything political other than you know as i
00:30:05.820 mentioned earlier on Tyler's banner it appeared to say me too but it's done so roughly that it
00:30:14.780 you know I may not even be reading that correctly but it's absolutely bizarre Bob tell me what has
00:30:20.700 been the reaction of members of the legion what has been reaction of the community given these
00:30:27.240 grotesque acts of vandalism well um the amount of support that the legion and the banner program
00:30:39.080 and tyler todd has received from the community is just it's pretty unbelievable really we've had
00:30:46.760 three or four hundred comments on on social media um i've had i don't know probably 50
00:30:53.560 requests from local individuals you know i'll be happy to pay for a new banner we'll we'll
00:30:59.500 pay for it i had a business out of kitchener ampersand of canada i think it is
00:31:08.280 a company we've never dealt with but apparently they produce things along the line of the banner
00:31:15.520 and they reached out and said you know we we will produce a banner and we'll guarantee that you'll
00:31:21.720 have it by Remembrance Day of this year.
00:31:25.760 But for six years now, I've been using the same local
00:31:29.960 printer in New Hamburg, Ritz Printing, and they've
00:31:33.000 been wonderful, so, you know, Morgan, the manager,
00:31:37.340 has said that, you know, we can produce a new banner,
00:31:40.540 we'll expedite it, and we'll do what we need to do
00:31:43.800 to make sure you have a banner for November the 11th.
00:31:47.520 So in fairness to Morgan, you know, he's been with us
00:31:50.680 all the way along.
00:31:51.440 It's been wonderful support for us.
00:31:54.940 But I'm going to go it on a limb here.
00:31:56.640 With all those hundreds of comments you've received, Bob,
00:31:59.800 I bet you not one said, hey, good on the vandals
00:32:02.960 for taking this stance.
00:32:04.440 No.
00:32:04.940 No.
00:32:05.440 No.
00:32:06.820 We're a small town.
00:32:09.160 You would want to have an anonymous account
00:32:11.380 to post something like that.
00:32:13.780 There has been nothing negative whatsoever
00:32:16.760 about the program or the Legion or New Hamburg
00:32:19.780 anything like that it's it's been all the the comments following all this sad event has been
00:32:26.380 very positive um and as bad as the damage has been done it's it's kind of enlightening to know that
00:32:35.380 you know two bad apples did this but you know 500 other people in town um are supportive of it you
00:32:43.780 And I guess that's the silver lining. 0.96
00:32:45.660 This is clearly the lunatic fringe. 0.93
00:32:48.740 Yes.
00:32:50.700 I'm not even sure it's on the fringe of lunacy.
00:32:54.740 But, yeah, it was two individuals.
00:32:56.920 It looked to be two males.
00:32:58.460 I've seen the footage.
00:33:00.000 We can't tell from the footage what their faces are.
00:33:03.740 But, again, it's a small town.
00:33:05.680 Someone is going to say something to somebody.
00:33:08.160 And, you know, I talked to the police this morning at length,
00:33:12.100 and they've dedicated a whole bunch of resources to this.
00:33:16.260 It's just not something that should happen in a small Ontario town.
00:33:21.880 I don't think it's something that should happen anywhere in our dominion, Bob.
00:33:26.680 And what sticks in my craw about this, it's not just the criminal act,
00:33:34.140 the desecration of property that you have no right to do,
00:33:38.880 but it is the ingratitude of these individuals the idea that so many of the men on these banners on
00:33:47.160 display they gave their lives to preserve our rights and freedom the rights and freedom for
00:33:53.920 these people to walk around I guess with spray paint and markers and whatnot and yet they don't
00:33:59.860 seem to care and in fact they have some sort of visceral hatred for the veterans you know can you
00:34:07.760 connect those dots for me, Bob? I don't think I can. As I say, along with the banner, there was
00:34:15.140 damage done to a couple of bus stops. You know, so do they hate buses. It's, you know, I think it's
00:34:21.360 just because the banner was there, there was an access to it because of the trash can. If the
00:34:27.320 trash can hadn't been there, I don't think they would have touched the banner. You know, how are
00:34:32.140 going to reach it you know i i'm not sure that it's a hatred towards the military or or things
00:34:39.100 canadian um i think it was just two people that happened to have a can of spray paint and nothing
00:34:47.420 else to do at two o'clock in the morning absolutely astonishing and bob i want to ask in in the big
00:34:54.780 picture i mean i'm looking at this gorgeous mural here and it's the classic phrase we associate
00:35:01.980 with those who gave their lives in battle lest we forget and what i'm getting at is we go back to
00:35:10.700 november 2019 don cherry calling out people for not wearing the poppy i don't think he said
00:35:17.260 anything outrageous in fact we proved it that year we or the following year we went to the corner of
00:35:23.260 young and dundas in downtown toronto at 10 minutes before 11 a.m on november the 11th
00:35:31.020 and i was shocked bob easily more than 95 percent of passers-by were not wearing the poppy here
00:35:39.740 check it out folks the phrase around this time of year is less we forget have people just forgotten
00:35:46.460 well i don't know if any of them really are that interested you know they're too busy making money
00:35:53.980 you know so they don't consider it a privilege to live in this country they want us to forget
00:36:01.100 our heritage and to fill it with a vacuum of their choosing i would say it looks like
00:36:09.580 a sheer number of people have forgotten and um but this is next level this is carrying out
00:36:17.020 you know uh basically a crime spree uh to these uh monuments um but going back to my original
00:36:24.940 premise bob why is it just the passage of time that people aren't paying enough attention they're
00:36:33.100 they're not making the effort to go out buy a poppy and display it at least for one day
00:36:39.520 for those people that gave their lives well that's a big question I've been I'm a vet so
00:36:49.120 selling poppies is is a big issue for me I've been doing it for 35 years I suppose and it's
00:37:01.540 a little disheartening when you know people walk by and they just don't acknowledge you when you're
00:37:06.700 standing there trying to pin poppies or distribute them um it's a little unfortunate you know i've
00:37:15.180 gone through malls in brampton and toronto around remembrance day and you're right 95 percent of
00:37:20.300 people don't wear a poppy and it's it's unfortunate part of it might be because well you know what do
00:37:27.300 you do with the money you know where does the money go what what good is my ten dollars going
00:37:32.580 to do the royal canadian legion so this year in every poppy box that we've distributed throughout
00:37:39.920 the whole area we broke down exactly where the funds go you know um so lack of education
00:37:49.500 lack of history just lack of caring i guess um it's shameful to me bob but i have no other word
00:38:00.400 And one last thing. Can I say one more? Absolutely. I totally agree with Don Cherry. I agreed 100 percent the night he said that. I've agreed with him 100 percent ever since then.
00:38:12.800 And it's scary. Someone of his gravitas, someone who's a legend, someone responsible for the most watched eight minutes of TV in Canada every week got cancelled for saying the truth.
00:38:26.860 And Bob, I would say if they can cancel Don Cherry, they can cancel anyone.
00:38:31.220 Well, they're not going to cancel us.
00:38:32.820 OK.
00:38:33.800 We're celebrating our 100th anniversary in Canada.
00:38:37.240 So 1926, the Legion started up. We're still here. We're still strong.
00:38:42.320 We've got 377,000 members across Canada.
00:38:46.540 In small towns like New Hamburg, we are the center of town.
00:38:50.860 You know, we do the banquets and the dances and the meat draws and all that sort of stuff.
00:38:55.980 Whatever we make keeps the doors open and the rest goes to look after legions, sorry, veterans, veterans' families, veterans' children, whatever it takes.
00:39:07.660 Well, Bob, one last point. 0.86
00:39:09.700 It seems that not a year goes by where there is what I call a Remembrance Day bozo eruption. 0.83
00:39:18.400 And what I mean by that, it's something like a major retailer sending a security guard out to the parking lot to give a veteran selling poppies the heave ho.
00:39:29.480 um some reprobate going into a convenience store or a coffee shop and stealing the poppy box just
00:39:38.460 for just to uh presumably get the money in it and what i'm getting at bob is that when these stories
00:39:45.160 uh are publicized the rage out there it's basically i don't care who you are what you
00:39:54.580 believe in don't screw with the veterans and i guess what i'm leaning up to is if and when these
00:40:01.660 people are identified well bob i wouldn't want to be in their shoes well tyler todd was a member of
00:40:09.500 the first battalion princess patricia's canadian light infantry um i've heard from about seven or
00:40:16.120 eight uh ex-members of that regiment and i sure hope the police find them before those fellows do
00:40:22.580 That's about all I can say to that.
00:40:24.660 Yeah, well, you know, to be clear, I'm not kind of advocating any vigilantism.
00:40:30.020 I just mean the blowback they're going to get from the public,
00:40:34.300 if they're employed, perhaps losing their jobs.
00:40:37.740 Who would want somebody like that on staff?
00:40:40.420 So let's see what happens in the days and weeks ahead.
00:40:43.480 I know Waterloo Regional Police is actively investigating this.
00:40:47.720 And maybe there'll be a modicum of justice.
00:40:50.340 and maybe we'll find out if the same people are responsible for the banner desecration
00:40:55.460 who vandalized the cenotaph in august last word goes to you bob well i i don't know um
00:41:06.660 again being a small town we're we're just not used to this sort of behavior
00:41:11.940 i know in larger urban areas you know there's always that fringe element you know that that
00:41:17.540 is going to go out of their way to cause a problem but we're just not used to it in in small town
00:41:23.300 kids here you know we're active in all the schools here and have been for years and years
00:41:29.380 so anybody educated anywhere around town or anywhere in the area they're they're brought up
00:41:34.980 you know they they know how to respect not just remembrance day and and the veterans but the whole
00:41:42.580 concept of remembrance and and you know the old story be kind it's free you know
00:41:50.020 Bob this is indeed the banner of private Tyler Todd it has been desecrated I think
00:41:58.900 you're right they were trying to write some sort of message on it first things
00:42:05.620 first is this recoverable can you remove this paint stain no okay no we've tried
00:42:12.560 different cleaners different solvents the township has offered their services with
00:42:18.000 special solvents that they can order but to no avail we're not able to clean it
00:42:24.720 as i i don't know if i mentioned before initially the todd family wanted it left up
00:42:31.040 but then later changed their mind they found it distressing which is fair ball so then they asked
00:42:37.840 to take it down, so I went up yesterday on a ladder, took it down, took it over to Ritz
00:42:46.400 Printing, the people that produced it, and they tried with their cleaners and that sort of thing,
00:42:53.680 and just no luck at all. So ultimately, Bob, the way I look at things in the final analysis,
00:42:59.320 this was lose-lose for the Vandals. I'll tell you why. You're going to have a brand new
00:43:03.660 uh placard go up for private todd and i bet you with all the awareness that's being generated
00:43:11.240 people are going to well vote with their wallets maybe make a little extra donation uh to the
00:43:18.640 legion uh if that's the only thing they can do uh i imagine people that support the legion people
00:43:26.080 who support our veterans will do that what say you i hope so okay um you know we talked earlier
00:43:33.600 about pinning poppies and I've been doing it for 35 years some people you know
00:43:39.780 you can count on them year after year you know they're gonna show up with a
00:43:43.260 sizable donation or a small donation whatever they can afford and they're
00:43:47.400 gonna support it other people it's just another day in the week folks before my
00:43:53.280 camera woman and I head back to Toronto we thought we would drop by the cenotaph
00:43:58.200 pay our respects. And, you know, it's kind of funny, isn't it? Not in a good way. The slogan
00:44:06.500 we associate with the veterans and with those who died in battle is, lest we forget. But as far as
00:44:14.760 I'm concerned, I don't know what it is. Maybe just the passage of time too many people have
00:44:22.200 You might recall Don Cherry in what would become the last episode of Coach's Corner back in November 2019.
00:44:32.980 He said as much himself. Check it out.
00:44:36.520 You people love you. They come here, whatever it is. You love our way of life. You love our milk and honey.
00:44:42.660 At least you can pay a couple of bucks for poppies or something like that.
00:44:46.580 These guys pay for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada.
00:44:50.780 these guys paid the biggest price anyhow i'm going to run it again for you great people
00:44:56.260 and good canadians that bought a poppy i'm still going to run it anyhow i love you for it you know

00:45:12.220 and presumably because some snowflake would be offended by the truth.
00:45:19.740 Well, I guess they can't handle the truth, as the saying goes.
00:45:23.360 And for that reason, they made Don Cherry a sacrificial lamb.
00:45:28.040 And by the way, if they can cancel a legend, an icon like Don Cherry, they can cancel anyone.
00:45:36.040 But that's the thing that makes this story in New Hamburg so egregious, so outrageous.
00:45:42.560 It's not merely a matter of people not caring anymore.
00:45:46.640 It's not merely a matter of people not putting a couple of bucks in a box to buy a poppy and proudly display it.
00:45:54.760 No, for as we've seen, we have some reprobates in this town that are going out of their way to vandalize the cenotaph.
00:46:03.820 They are going out of their way in the wee hours of the morning to vandalize banners honoring the war dead that fought so hard for our country and paid the ultimate price.
00:46:19.480 Bottom line, folks, as I mentioned in the preamble, Waterloo Police Service are investigating this crime.
00:46:27.420 And I'll tell you something, if and when the reprobates that did this vandalism are identified and charged, I sure wouldn't want to be in their shoes. 0.79
