Relatable with Allie Beth Stuckey - Ep 399 ｜ Rachel Hollis Gets Canceled & a Prayer to Hate White People

00:00:00.000 hey guys welcome to relatable happy wednesday almost said happy thursday kind of feels like

00:00:15.140 thursday but no it's only wednesday which is good because i still have a lot to talk about

00:00:19.680 this week today we are going to talk about the author rachel hollis posting a video that got

00:00:27.860 a lot of backlash we're going to talk about the backlash what i think is legitimate criticism

00:00:32.020 what i think is not legitimate criticism why i think that her video was problematic in how i think

00:00:38.880 that we as christians can respond to something like this in a way that is actually glorifying to

00:00:44.060 god and then we're going to talk about uh this book that has been circulating or a prayer in this book

00:00:52.200 has been circulating the book is called rhythms of prayer and the prayer that is in it it's a

00:00:58.940 compilation of prayers from various women and this prayer that has kind of gone viral and that people

00:01:05.480 are talking about starts with dear god please help me hate white people so we're going to talk about

00:01:13.200 that and the problems with it it might seem obvious but i think that our analysis of that prayer and

00:01:21.200 breaking down what's wrong with that kind of perspective is going to be very edifying to you

00:01:26.420 so let us first start with this rachel hollis drama so like i said she posted a video on tiktok that 1.00

00:01:34.640 she shared on instagram that she received a ton of backlash for and before we play it i want to give

00:01:42.120 you some context just in case you don't know who rachel hollis is she is the best-selling author of

00:01:47.880 girl wash your face she also wrote a book pretty recently um i think last year it came out called

00:01:53.000 girl stop apologizing if you've read my book you're not enough and that's okay we talk about rachel

00:01:58.720 hollis's um mindset her work her theology she's basically a life and business coach her books use

00:02:07.380 her own experiences to try to help women gain confidence to fix their relationships their health

00:02:14.240 their business endeavors she and her now ex-husband she announced a divorce not too long ago uh dave

00:02:22.340 hollis uh hosted conferences inspiring or i guess she still hosts these conferences inspiring women to 0.99

00:02:29.180 be their best selves she has become very very famous from all of this very rich it seems like very

00:02:36.360 influential and you'll see why i'm saying the very rich part in just a second um in the beginning of

00:02:42.220 her rise to fame a lot of christian women a christian woman that i know followed her because you know

00:02:48.300 she claimed to be a christian herself she seemed to be um maybe on the conservative side of things just a

00:02:54.940 normal happy mom an entrepreneur who wanted to help other women uh achieve their goals and the issue that 1.00

00:03:03.340 i have with rachel's work even though there were a lot of people that i like and know that that followed

00:03:09.760 her and listened to her is that she preaches and has always preached the gospel of self-fulfillment of

00:03:16.540 self-satisfaction she propagates what i call in my book uh trendy narcissism that everything that you 0.91

00:03:23.820 need to be whole to be healed to be happy is is found or can be found buried deep inside you and you

00:03:31.020 just have to do the work of of finding and unleashing that inner goddess that has been held back by

00:03:36.860 societal expectations or toxic relationships or whatever and that stuff might be motivating enough

00:03:43.080 uh to help you reach your long-term goals or your short-term goals uh but it's not how the bible

00:03:49.680 describes us it's not the picture that the bible lays out of who we are and what our journey actually

00:03:54.920 is the bible says that we are to be as christians totally relying on god for our ultimate fulfillment and

00:04:01.900 satisfaction that doesn't mean that we don't work hard that we can't be disciplined or that we can't

00:04:06.180 have goals but those things ultimately aren't going to be our satisfaction we are called in the bible

00:04:13.140 to deny ourselves to put on the new self given to us by christ and then to follow him to go to him as

00:04:20.600 our source of fulfillment and satisfaction as we've said so many times if you've read my book you likely

00:04:26.880 remember this line the self cannot be both the problem and the solution so if inside yourself you are

00:04:33.940 finding all of these issues these insecurities these anxieties that you are just hoping that the next

00:04:39.980 self-help book is going to help you conquer so you could be on the road to manifesting all of your dreams

00:04:46.480 if you're finding those problems inside yourself there's no way logically for you to also find the

00:04:51.760 solution to those things inside yourself so you're not going to find the solution in the same place the

00:04:57.220 exact same place in the exact same person that you are finding all of your problems you can't fix you

00:05:02.860 your self-love and your self-empowerment will not regenerate you they do not have that power you don't

00:05:10.380 have that power it may make you feel better temporarily but ultimately because this kind of mentality is based

00:05:18.840 or this kind of practice i should say of self-empowerment and self-fulfillment and self-motivation

00:05:24.340 is based on dependent on your ability to love and empower yourself and because you like all people

00:05:33.060 are finite infallible you will find yourself on a roller coaster of ups and downs that is dictated

00:05:41.060 and directed by your frail attempts at being enough for yourself the good news is though the good news is

00:05:48.940 is that god's love the one who created you his strength his sufficiency his power his enoughness

00:05:56.820 is totally steadfast it's sure it's reliable it's stable it is unconditional it is trustworthy and you

00:06:05.260 get to release the burden of trying to be your own source of fulfillment which you can't be and look

00:06:12.580 to god to fulfill you to direct you to guide you to give you the wisdom and the truth and the love and

00:06:18.140 the satisfaction that you're trying to failing to find inside yourself because god can do that and he

00:06:24.960 will do that through christ for the believer it might not look like the life that rachel hollis and

00:06:31.780 other self-help self-motivational self-empowerment gurus uh tell you that you need your life might not

00:06:42.180 uh look like some boss babe that is constantly conquering the world when you are following 1.00

00:06:49.040 christ that's not what christ promises you he actually promises that your life is going to have

00:06:54.440 trouble when you follow him uh first timothy tells us that all who who desire to live a godly life

00:07:01.540 will be persecuted jesus promises in this life in this world you will have trouble but take heart i have

00:07:08.820 overcome the world but what we're told through the gospel uh it's not this promise of self-fulfillment

00:07:15.400 and perfect happiness and reaching all of our goals here again not that it's wrong to have goals that

00:07:20.000 align with god's will that god has called you to do um but that's not our promise our promise is not that

00:07:26.220 all of our dreams will come true our promise is not that we're going to be rich our promise is not that

00:07:30.500 we're going to have it all together and lose all of the weight and be able to motivate and empower

00:07:36.020 and fulfill and satisfy ourselves our promise is abundant life in christ that even as things don't

00:07:43.460 go our way even as we falter even as we fail even as the circumstances around us outside of our control

00:07:49.000 seem to crumble that we have an anchor we have a reason for joy in christ and that we have a hope

00:07:56.680 that is not a part of this world that's not in this world that's not temporal but it's actually

00:08:02.600 eternal that's better news and god says look like you can't handle this responsibility of being your

00:08:09.720 own satisfaction like you can lose all the weight you can reach all the goals you can get all the

00:08:15.200 promotions you can let go of all the toxic people in your life you can do all the the the yoga the

00:08:20.980 exercises you can sculpt your arms and lift your butt whatever it is and you're still going to be

00:08:27.060 waking up in the middle of the night wondering why am i here who made is there something is there

00:08:32.280 something bigger than me like is there something more than this is there something that transcends

00:08:37.240 me am i really all there is like is is self-love really the only the only goal um it's not enough

00:08:47.360 you're not enough for yourself and that's where i think rachel's books miss the mark they might have

00:08:54.180 some good advice they probably have some catchy phrases and maybe some of them have actually helped

00:08:59.180 you but they miss the mark when it comes to who we are what we truly desire what will satisfy us who god

00:09:06.800 is who we are in relation to god what god actually promises in relation to us and i actually think that

00:09:16.020 more and more people have figured that out um the more openly progressive and secular and kind of

00:09:23.080 self-adoring self-elevating she has become on social media the more a large chunk of at least

00:09:29.880 her like conservative christian audience it seems realized that okay maybe she should not be the go-to

00:09:37.240 person for life advice or like my spiritual guru or anything like that um but it's not just that chunk

00:09:44.720 of her audience like she's also seen as problematic for other reasons none of which i just listed

00:09:49.360 because the the other people on the other side of the aisle i would say like more of the progressive

00:09:54.740 um activists the progressive self-help gurus wouldn't agree with anything that i just said like

00:10:01.760 they probably had no problem with whether with with like her theology or whether or not she was

00:10:07.800 biblical um they have more of a problem because of um because of her emphasis on what they would 0.99

00:10:17.120 probably say is like capitalistic toxicity like pull yourself up by your bootstraps kind of thing

00:10:22.420 but she's also um just generally been seen as problematic because she's been accused of plagiarism

00:10:28.900 in her books which seems to be true like i don't know if that was her intent but you can look at the

00:10:35.100 articles on this and it doesn't like it doesn't look good i don't know if that's what she meant to do

00:10:40.560 by like taking people's phrases and trying to make them her own but that's what it looks like

00:10:45.680 happened at least in girl wash her face um she's also been called out in the past for throwing her 1.00

00:10:51.300 team under the bus publicly on social media uh when she posts something or or says something that gets

00:10:58.820 backlash um and this time the reason that she's in um you know a whole bout of controversy now is

00:11:06.480 because she posted this video that made a lot of people left and right really mad um i would say

00:11:14.840 it was probably at least most prominently and most loudly i saw people on the left but i saw

00:11:20.180 christian conservatives people who didn't necessarily follow hollis before really take issue with her

00:11:25.060 video i took issue with her video so i'm gonna play the whole thing it's very short it was a tiktok

00:11:29.800 video posted it on instagram here it is doing a live stream and i mentioned that there's a sweet

00:11:35.020 woman who comes to my house twice a week and cleans she's my my house cleaner she cleans the toilets 1.00

00:11:40.400 someone commented and said you are privileged af and i was like you're right i'm super freaking

00:11:47.180 privileged but also i worked my off to have the money to have someone come twice a week and clean

00:11:52.960 my toilets and i told her that and then she said well you're unrelatable what is it about me that made

00:12:02.820 you think i want to be relatable no sis literally everything i do in my life is to live a life that

00:12:11.300 most people can't relate to most people won't work this hard most people won't get up at 4 a.m

00:12:16.540 most people won't fail publicly again and again just to reach the top of the mountain literally every

00:12:23.160 woman i admire in history was unrelatable if my life is relatable to most people i'm doing it wrong

00:12:29.560 so like that just at first i started watching it and i was like okay like

00:12:35.260 but then every time she said something i was like oh oh oh oh stop please i was just cringing i

00:12:44.740 couldn't believe that she she like thought about this she at least scripted it in her head

00:12:50.700 and she did a video and then she posted it like that takes a lot of thought and we've all made mistakes

00:12:58.480 i'm not saying i've never made a mistake and and something that i posted that i just like didn't

00:13:02.620 really think about and it's possible probable that that's what happens here but oh that was hard to

00:13:09.280 watch and hard to listen to i can't imagine those of you listening who are driving in your car like oh

00:13:15.520 did she really just say that yes she really said that and then the caption kind of makes it worse

00:13:20.760 i agree with the people who had a problem with this caption so the caption says harriet tubman rbg

00:13:28.720 marie curie uh oprah winfrey amelia airheart frida kahlo malala yousafsi wu zhachan uh all

00:13:37.840 unrelatable a f um so it kind of seems like people or it kind of seems like she's comparing herself

00:13:47.160 to these people which is a little odd definitely in different categories uh people in the comments

00:13:53.360 told her whoa whoa whoa this is really privileged uh they said you know she's discounting the hard

00:14:00.840 work of people who don't make as much money as her which i think i think it's true like i guarantee

00:14:07.820 her housekeeper works very hard um people were saying also that this is like whiteness on display

00:14:17.020 this was white privilege this is degrading people of color who they claim haven't had the same

00:14:23.580 opportunities in a white privileged system as she has so you had those kind of progressive activist 1.00

00:14:29.040 comments as well um like i said people also took issue with her with her caption trying to compare 1.00

00:14:34.920 herself to not just very prominent women but also who by the way a lot of those women probably have 1.00

00:14:41.740 never had a housekeeper um but also like they were women of color and so people took issue

00:14:47.960 with that what i think is that this post was a whole lot of ego and that doesn't surprise me like

00:14:55.200 i've always like i said like i think that her books promote what i call trendy narcissism i think this ego

00:15:02.400 has been um you know uh uh something that she has had inside of her for a very long time and it probably

00:15:13.180 especially comes out when someone criticizes her and i think that's what we saw so after a couple days

00:15:20.140 i guess of criticism she tried to apologize and so she posted an apology and she said someday i'll learn

00:15:29.620 not yet apparently but someday i'll learn someday i'll learn that my intent and my impact can be wildly

00:15:34.780 different things i made a post last week that was upsetting to people and even though that was never

00:15:38.620 my intent i own that it was and i apologize uh she said and i'm not reading all the slides there are

00:15:46.640 several slides on instagram um she says i've talked a lot about this over the years i have a nanny i have

00:15:53.080 someone who helps with cleaning i have a team at work who helps to build this business and i think it's

00:15:57.480 crucial that i keep talking about that i could very easily pretend that i don't have any assistance

00:16:03.600 um and so she's like kind of asking these questions in this apology if i were reading all the slides then

00:16:10.120 you would see that she was like so like was it upsetting to you for this reason well here's my

00:16:15.060 response to that was it upsetting to you for this reason here's my response to that which

00:16:18.400 i found a little patronizing and i found like i'm sorry i found it to be like i'm sorry you feel

00:16:25.420 that way which is not a good apology it's not a good apology at all again i would say that that's

00:16:31.320 pretty prideful um and then in her last slides after she you know explains the situation and 0.70

00:16:39.380 semi apologizes for people's feelings about certain things but at the same time justifies herself

00:16:45.000 she says that was where things started but because i still haven't learned i didn't respond to these

00:16:50.720 things on friday when i heard people were upset here's the kicker i listened to my team instead of

00:16:58.560 my gut so she kind of just ended on the word upset but she she had to follow up with that last sentence 0.97

00:17:07.420 i listened to my team instead of my gut then the last slide this just makes me this is really what

00:17:16.580 what bothers me that she's throwing these people under the bus i listened when they her team told

00:17:22.400 me not to respond to let it blow over i listened when they said they would monitor the situation which

00:17:29.380 meant monitor comments and then i woke up this morning to find certain comments had been censored

00:17:34.560 and then she says like you know these people these activists that she follows should be able to call

00:17:41.260 her out and say that she effed up she says the word um and we should all listen now here's the irony

00:17:47.840 here's the irony here so in these last two slides completely throws her team under the bus and let 0.98

00:17:53.660 me just make a comment like there's such a difference in the the empowerment and advice

00:17:58.220 authors that women get versus the ones that men get and that would probably be why as we've talked

00:18:04.680 about before like i think women today are so toxic when it comes to cancel culture so toxic when it 1.00

00:18:12.620 comes to bullying over like performative activism on social media and in the name of social justice

00:18:21.120 and doing the work and doing better or constantly bullying other female entrepreneurs on social 0.98

00:18:28.720 media or other female influencers are trying to call people out and so-called hold people accountable 1.00

00:18:34.140 because this is the kind of nonsense that we get in the way of empowerment and advice whereas guys are

00:18:41.220 getting people like jordan peterson telling them to make their lives better to actually mend their

00:18:46.080 relationships rather than just cutting people out of your life telling them to clean their room we uh

00:18:52.080 men get jocko willink who are telling them hey take extreme ownership of your life freaking get out of bed

00:18:58.980 stop being lazy stop making excuses and just uh just do the things that you want to do i'm not saying

00:19:07.060 i'm not endorsing like the entire world view of those authors or like the entire perspective or all of

00:19:11.920 their tips or anything i'm just trying to give you the contrast uh between uh between what men get in the

00:19:20.940 way of advice and then what women get like this is the self-empowerment guru for women rachel hollis

00:19:28.300 and she is modeling what she thinks leadership and character looks like which is throwing her team

00:19:34.320 under the bus and men are being told to take extreme ownership of their lives and are being told

00:19:41.220 um that they need to take responsibility and to actually take steps to make their lives better no

00:19:49.360 wonder women today are just so lost in chaos the advice that we're getting the people we're following are 1.00

00:19:56.480 so actually toxic um and then here's the irony too so she says in these last two slides um you know i

00:20:05.120 shouldn't have listened to my team uh i shouldn't have i i shouldn't have followed their advice i

00:20:11.000 should have done what i know is right and then in her caption for this you know so-called apology she

00:20:17.520 says what you find on my social media feeds is me for better or worse it's all me so hang on a second

00:20:24.320 is it you is it you or is it your team so it's your team when you don't want to take ownership for

00:20:30.560 something um so she kind of apologizes here uh but not really i mean she made the post like she made

00:20:39.380 the post she made the decision as far as i know she has access to her account she could have apologized 0.92

00:20:44.760 if she wanted to and she's not wanting to take ownership of that because it's the same ego that we

00:20:51.280 that we have always seen from the work and i'm not saying that like that we don't all struggle with

00:20:56.960 pride and we don't all struggle with ego but we just need to call it what it is and then okay so

00:21:02.740 she kept on getting backlash people called her out i think rightly on that apology and we're like

00:21:07.140 what the heck how how are you still missing this again people that i don't necessarily agree with

00:21:12.640 um on you know all of their views and everything but just saying like look this is your apology is not

00:21:19.400 correct of course i will say that a lot of the people calling her out are never going to be okay

00:21:24.220 with any kind of apology that she makes it like doesn't matter how humble she is but i think

00:21:28.580 they're right this particular apology missed the mark so what she ends up doing is she deletes this

00:21:33.660 so-called apology she deletes the original post and then she posts another um another apology in which

00:21:42.360 she talks about you know she she didn't um acknowledge the systems of privilege and the systems of racism 0.91

00:21:51.040 that cause these disparities and um she really just needs to do better and all this stuff all this you

00:22:00.500 know crt it's the same kind of apology that we saw from like for example chris harrison when he

00:22:09.260 defended that bachelor contestant for being for pictures resurfacing from 2018 in which she was wearing

00:22:17.100 like um you know antebellum garb and he said you know i'm really going to do the work and systems of

00:22:23.740 privilege and disparities in my opinion all of that still misses the point like that to that's not why

00:22:31.080 this was problematic it was problematic because she does actually disregard the hard work of other

00:22:37.560 people who haven't who who who haven't had the same life and the same opportunities that she has like

00:22:44.900 hard work it's not necessarily i'm sure she does really work hard and you can work hard in a lot

00:22:52.020 of cases and do what she does and get what she gets but there are a lot of people that work really hard

00:22:58.100 that can't ever afford a housekeeper like there are teachers that work really hard for years and years 0.94

00:23:04.520 there are going to be housekeepers that work really hard there are going to be janitors there are going to

00:23:08.580 be accountants there are going to be a stay-at-home moms who who don't work that have worked really 1.00

00:23:14.600 hard and work just as hard as rachel hollis does and her equating her success um exclusively with hard 1.00

00:23:23.380 work and her ability to afford a housekeeper exclusively with hard work i do actually think 1.00

00:23:28.640 is problematic because it shows her narcissism it shows her pride it shows that bad theology the gospel

00:23:37.100 of self-fulfillment now whether or not she is ignoring systemically racist systems that is 0.83

00:23:45.200 really up for debate but regardless i agree with her critics that this was just totally off and to me

00:23:54.600 it revealed something that is actually going on in her and i and i hope because we're all imperfect

00:23:59.300 and we all make mistakes and we all post things and say things that we shouldn't say i do hope that

00:24:04.500 she learns from this but i hope that she learns the right lesson in that i hope that god humbles her

00:24:09.980 i hope that god softens her heart i hope god calls him uh calls her to himself and that she realizes wow

00:24:16.300 all of the gifts that i have come from the lord and let me stop worshiping myself publicly and privately

00:24:21.740 and let me worship and turn to him that's what i hope and then you have people who are um you know

00:24:28.420 they're professing christians who decide that they are going to take it upon themselves to quote hold

00:24:35.260 rachel hall is accountable and i have a problem with this kind of response to shrouded in righteousness

00:24:41.480 that i actually think is a form of bullying and i talked about this um i talked about this on social

00:24:46.860 media this post by ashita moore who i had never heard of before but apparently she's influential in the

00:24:53.940 world of like christian social justice and she talks about the importance of making sure that

00:24:59.640 rachel hollis um basically pays for what she said so she talks about um in her post for example why she

00:25:07.520 believes rachel hollis's video was problematic she says it was steeped in meritocracy i worked hard

00:25:13.980 first of all i don't have any problem with meritocracy like i do believe that rachel hollis probably did

00:25:20.540 work hard i have a problem with what i just articulated a couple minutes ago but i again

00:25:25.860 this like critical race theory idea that meritocracy is inherently racist and bad i just don't get on

00:25:32.660 board with that at all paternalism the sweet lady who cleans my toilets that's she said that this post 1.00

00:25:37.960 or rachel hollis's video had paternalism i agree that part was very cringy for me the sweet lady who

00:25:43.940 cleans my toilets no thanks and she says this post um demonstrated white supremacy no sis apparently 1.00

00:25:51.880 that is appropriation of the black vernacular ashita moore is saying and so that was problematic um it

00:25:59.840 did nothing but cause harm to so many people so i will pray for those she harmed and pray for her

00:26:06.440 ears to hear correction so even though i don't agree with the entirety of that like okay whatever at least

00:26:12.980 you're ending with like i'm gonna i'm gonna pray for her i'm gonna pray for the people whose feelings

00:26:16.700 have been hurt now i think this word harm is being so overused right now by the same people who call

00:26:23.380 people of a certain skin color fragile like activists are constantly using this word harm to

00:26:29.160 describe certain kinds of speech and i just think that it belittles actual harm but this is the problem

00:26:35.400 that i really had with this particular post by ashita moore she says i am a peacemaker and i take

00:26:41.980 jesus's teaching on the sermon on the mount seriously so i will continue to pray for rachel okay awesome i

00:26:49.040 don't believe anyone is too far gone to change awesome i will be emailing her partners okay but

00:26:57.120 that's not enough i won't just go after her pocketbook and ignore her heart i will pray she's in pain so i will

00:27:04.380 pray she's bought into dangerous ideology so i will pray and if she asks me i'll help her learn

00:27:11.000 she's profiting from harm there's that word again so i will pray for the lord to make it possible for

00:27:16.680 her to heal and protect those whom she has hurt she may have to lose some influence and may need to go

00:27:22.940 away for a while that's not frightening at all that's okay even paul had to get quiet listen and

00:27:30.100 re-learn this is the only way i know how to be a peacemaker so so close so close lots of righteous

00:27:38.460 sounding language and then we've got right in there that apparently this person thinks it's her

00:27:45.240 responsibility to go after rachel hollis's sponsors to go after her pocketbook that's verbatim to make

00:27:55.100 sure she says in another part of the post that it's important that you can um that you want people to feel

00:28:01.740 consequences for their actions i'm going to talk about why i think that kind of response

00:28:06.620 is also very prideful and something that we need to stay away from as christians we've talked about

00:28:13.000 this before but i just want to reiterate the importance of realizing that that's not actually

00:28:17.900 a biblical response to the video that rachel hollis posted as offensive as it was to so many people for

00:28:25.820 so many different reasons here's the problem with this kind of response even though it sounds so close

00:28:38.020 to being right it sounds so close to being good it's shrouded with that righteous sounding language

00:28:42.780 it almost sounds biblical you're using the sermon on the mount here to be a peacemaker is this really

00:28:49.880 peacemaking like is this what god is talking about when he's talking about peacemaking like i agree that

00:28:55.800 peacemaking is not just sitting back and allowing things to happen it doesn't mean that you can't

00:29:01.200 disagree uh with people i do agree that if you are to be reconciled to someone who has actually wronged

00:29:09.320 you personally and directly by the way that's reconciliation it's not this like intangible

00:29:14.300 ethereal idea of one large group reconciling to another large group that doesn't know each other

00:29:19.280 um it actually takes relationship it's reconciliation is predicated on a pre-existing relationship let me

00:29:29.040 just say that um but i also don't think peacemaking is quote going after someone's pocketbook that's

00:29:39.160 revenge like that's petty that is bullying that is a prideful response it is not up to you random

00:29:47.840 person on the internet to quote hold someone accountable we've talked about the etymology

00:29:52.320 of that word accountability and what we found was that that word accountability especially every time

00:29:57.980 it's used in scripture denotes um authority it denotes uh the the requirement of having authority

00:30:07.040 to hold someone accountable so we as constituents we hold elected officials accountable we have that

00:30:13.820 authority or we're supposed to be able to have that authority because this is a government for the

00:30:17.880 people and by the people and of the people um and as uh as an employer you hold your employees

00:30:25.260 accountable you give them certain metrics and certain goals and you can fire them that's another part of

00:30:30.840 accountability that we talked about there has to be almost like a consequence that someone has the

00:30:36.180 authority to dole out if a standard is not reached by the person they are holding accountable and yes a

00:30:42.140 friend can hold you accountable but only when you give them that access and the authority to do so so

00:30:49.480 there is a particular position that you have to have in some kind of hierarchy or some kind of

00:30:55.500 relationship in order to be able to say that you are holding people accountable like it is not your job

00:31:02.560 to hold someone on the internet accountable because you don't like something that they said now that does not

00:31:10.760 mean that if someone says something that you don't like that you can't unfollow them or you can't stop

00:31:14.740 supporting them or you can't publicly disagree with them i publicly and privately disagree with people

00:31:19.720 all the time as we've talked about like that's not accountability that's not cancel culture that's not

00:31:26.160 bullying that actually i think is great like have that public discourse have that public dialogue be able

00:31:32.280 to say here's what this person said here's why i don't believe it's true without attacking them

00:31:37.000 personally i have disagreed with rachel hollis for a very long time i included her in my book never

00:31:45.020 want like and i have thought that her theology is um extremely detrimental uh to people's understanding

00:31:56.680 of god in the bible and their world view for a very long time like i've had before these people

00:32:04.260 thought that rachel hollis was problematic i thought that she was problematic for different reasons 0.98

00:32:08.380 have i ever for one second thought about going after her sponsors or contacting her sponsors or

00:32:16.360 or contacting her partners calling up peloton and saying you know this person is promoting trendy narcissism

00:32:22.640 do you really promote trendy narcissism and by the way peloton would be yes we do but um i would never

00:32:29.240 even consider doing that even if i thought that it was effective what i have said is like look here's

00:32:35.360 what she says here's why according to scripture that's not going to get us the the place that god

00:32:41.620 wants us to go here's what i think is true here's what i think is better that is totally 100 not just

00:32:47.240 fair game but i also think very productive and very good um i have never even thought about

00:32:55.200 trying to quote go after her pocketbook that's not my responsibility i don't have that authority

00:33:01.840 in her life i don't have that authority in general nor do i want that authority why would i want to bear

00:33:06.580 the burden of being the vessel through which uh god exacts vengeance and some kind of forced humility

00:33:14.860 uh on to onto her through like through punishment that'd be one thing if rachel hollis 1.00

00:33:23.180 read my book and was like wow i i see the light that would be a wonderful privilege to be that kind of

00:33:30.060 vessel but i don't have the time nor do i have the desire nor do i have like the inclination or or

00:33:39.200 feeling of bitterness and resentment and and and pointed uh pointed anger to be able to take i mean

00:33:48.620 i just can't imagine i cannot imagine taking the time to try to go after someone's pocketbook

00:33:56.680 just an individual we're not talking about a major corporation i also think that that's different

00:34:01.620 go after someone's pocketbook because they made a video that i found offensive you cannot try to tell

00:34:09.780 me that that's biblical like that is petty vengeance that is prideful bullying yes it is totally fair for 1.00

00:34:18.780 you to not support her anymore it's totally fair for you to privately or publicly disagree with that

00:34:23.300 person it's even fair to say look this is where i think that she's wrong and i probably wouldn't follow

00:34:28.460 her if i were you that's totally fine and you say that you're gonna pray for her and that you hope

00:34:35.080 that she you know has a different mentality that she learns okay whatever that's fine do not try to

00:34:42.820 say that it is biblical peacemaking to target someone's sponsors come on come on like that's just secular

00:34:52.220 cancel culture maoist struggle sessions that you are trying to uh that you are trying to make sound

00:35:01.280 biblical but it's not that is uh your attempts to satisfy your your fleshly desire for resentment

00:35:09.780 uh your fleshly desire to satisfy your resentment um and it's not biblical like like spend your time

00:35:20.160 doing something else the bible actually says that if we want to heap coals on our enemy's head and i'm not

00:35:25.680 saying that rachel hollis is an enemy then we're kind to them like we're abundantly generous to them

00:35:32.220 this is it is not your it's not your authority to make sure that that person this individual again

00:35:39.040 not even a major corporation feels the consequences of the offensiveness of her video by you going after

00:35:46.080 her pocketbook like how evil is that so i disagree with a lot of these things all around disagree with

00:35:54.240 rachel hollis disagreed with the video didn't like the video thought it was yucky for lack of a better 1.00

00:36:00.200 term disagreed with a lot of the responses in the comments of why it was problematic disagree with this

00:36:07.820 kind of bullying shrouded in biblical sounding righteous sounding language and as we've talked

00:36:13.640 about so many times like this is the toxicity of women on the internet especially professing christian 0.99

00:36:19.920 women like this whole do better culture it's like i mean it's all intermixed too it's this um like 1.00

00:36:30.300 these people who are calling out rachel they think that they're so much better than rachel but really

00:36:34.700 they're exemplifying the same pride they're actually there's a lot of people in the comments that are

00:36:39.220 trying to capitalize on someone else's mistake and point to themselves as who should actually be the

00:36:45.800 go-to source to help someone find their self-fulfillment or self-empowerment because they're

00:36:50.080 more woke or they're more intersectional or whatever it is like all these people are just intermixed with

00:36:57.020 their own forms of confusion and idolatry and i think as christians we need to stand away from it and say

00:37:04.600 here's why according to scripture you're wrong and you're also wrong and you're wrong and guess what i'm

00:37:10.600 wrong in a lot of ways too and the reality is is that we're all dead in sin apart from christ and

00:37:16.740 in christ we are all made alive through him there's not different levels of dead and sin there's uh not

00:37:23.260 uh i'm not superior to anyone who is also made alive in christ and we need to be gracious and humble and

00:37:32.700 realizing that everything that we've been given is a gracious gift from god there's a whole lot of pride

00:37:39.760 and ego stewing in this mess of a social media dumpster fire so i just wanted to explain all of

00:37:49.140 that um and now we're going to talk about another dumpster fire and that is this book rhythms of prayer

00:37:59.320 um help me hate white people is um a line from a book or a line from a prayer 0.74

00:38:09.260 in this book let me tell you a little bit um about it first so rhythms of prayer is a new york times 0.96

00:38:17.100 best-selling book um edited by sarah bessie there are a lot of other authors that are there are a lot

00:38:24.320 of authors that contributed to it like nadia bulls weber you might know who she is you might remember

00:38:29.840 that she had women this is very hard for me to explain because i can't like physically roll my 0.91

00:38:38.540 eyes hard enough to just uh to be able to match this level of ridiculousness of this story that i'm

00:38:50.740 about to tell you or your reminder that i'm about to give you nadia bulls weber is the woman who asks 0.99

00:38:56.740 women to send in their purity rings and i'm pretty sure it was along with gloria steinem that she uh 0.99

00:39:04.840 they like melted these purity rings and made them into like a statue like a golden image or a golden um 0.95

00:39:14.340 a car uh uh i don't know even what you would call it a statue or something of a vagina 1.00

00:39:21.120 um and they had women um you know i guess saying oh i'm done with purity culture i'm going to make 0.56

00:39:30.100 this uh golden image like a like a like a golden calf in the in the in the old testament if you 0.76

00:39:37.880 remember that um and i'm going they are going to create a vagina out of it and it was very strange so 0.98

00:39:45.220 if that gives you any indication of who is contributing to this kind of book i hope that

00:39:50.940 just kind of helps you understand where this book is coming from and the kinds of women that are 1.00

00:39:55.780 contributing to it and like the kinds of prayers that you can expect uh from this book but this

00:40:02.160 particular prayer there was a woman who was at target and she decided to look at this book and she

00:40:08.100 opened up i guess to this page and she posted it um on on twitter and if you're wondering well how can

00:40:15.040 you verify that this is really part of this book uh well because i'll tell you the author actually

00:40:20.800 responds to it and it says this is part of the book so let me read you some of this prayer it's by

00:40:27.260 shaniqua walker barnes dr shaniqua walker barnes um and this is part of the prayer dear god help me to hate

00:40:36.040 white people or at least to want to hate them at least i want to stop caring about them individually 0.97

00:40:43.380 and collectively i want to stop caring about their misguided racist souls to stop believing that 0.99

00:40:49.460 they can be better that they can stop being racist and then she goes on to say look i'm not talking

00:40:55.660 about the true anti-racist white women who have done all the right things according to my standards

00:41:03.320 and have fought white supremacy i'm talking she says um on the next page she said um i'm talking about

00:41:12.420 the other white people you know the nice ones the fox news loving trump supporting voters who don't

00:41:18.400 see color but who make thinly veiled racist comments about those people the people who are happy to have

00:41:25.100 me over for dinner but alert the neighborhood watch anytime an unrecognized person of color

00:41:29.640 passes their house the people who welcome black people in their churches and small groups but

00:41:35.360 brandice's heretics if we suggest that christianity is concerned with the poor and the oppressed that's a 0.74

00:41:39.440 strong man but anyway those are the people that she asks god to help her hate um she goes on um

00:41:50.480 asking the lord to harden her heart she says lord if it be your will harden my heart stop me from

00:41:57.100 striving to see the best in people stop me from being hopeful that white people can do and be better 0.62

00:42:03.320 let me imagine them instead as white hooded robe standing in front of burning crosses let me see them 0.97

00:42:10.280 as hopelessly unrepentant reprobate bigots who have been who have blasphemed the holy spirit

00:42:17.160 and who need to be handed over to the evil one so if you remember blasphemy of the holy spirit is the

00:42:24.560 one unforgivable sin which different interpretations have different um understandings of what that means

00:42:31.660 but in light of all of scripture it simply means being unrepentant rejecting god until you die

00:42:38.440 um and she said that the white people the ones who watch fox news and who are nice and who have her 0.99

00:42:43.560 over for dinner but aren't sufficiently anti-racist um that uh those people are going to hell those people 0.99

00:42:51.360 are going to be handed over to the evil one because shenequa walker barnes is the um apparently the the 0.97

00:42:58.640 standard bearer for that she's the one who gets to determine who is going to hell and who is not 0.72

00:43:05.240 um and then at the end she talks about that i want to be an agent in your ministry of justice and

00:43:13.200 reconciliation you have not allowed me to languish alone but you have lighted the path towards beloved

00:43:19.840 community with the loving witness of the ancestors elders and sojourners who have come before me

00:43:25.640 and who stand with me today thus in the spirits of fanny and ida and paulie and ella and septima and

00:43:33.020 coretta i pray and press on in love and love not so sure about that

00:43:39.840 now let's talk about a little bit before we get into actually talking about the ridiculousness of this

00:43:55.220 prayer and the danger of this kind of prayer and by the way i'll put the link um to this tweet in

00:44:02.140 the description of this podcast so that you can read the prayer in its entirety i don't want it to

00:44:07.520 seem like i'm taking things out of context uh because this person posted all of the pictures

00:44:13.480 of the entire prayer so you can read the context and you can decide if the context uh makes things

00:44:19.280 better um so sarah bessie is the um is the is the editor of this compilation called rhythms of prayer

00:44:29.620 she is the author also of best-selling and critically acclaimed books this is according to

00:44:33.880 her website jesus feminist out of sorts making peace with an evolving faith and miracles and other

00:44:40.180 reasonable things along with her friends the late rachel held evans and jim chaffee sarah co-founded

00:44:45.920 evolving faith evolving faith according to the website is um this is what the website says about

00:44:52.960 the organization maybe you're ready to reimagine the scripture and theology you used to take for

00:44:58.840 granted maybe you've been searching for answers at the intersections of faith justice belonging

00:45:03.760 scripture church and life you know it's long past time to decolonize your belief system

00:45:09.620 and lean into hard conversations but you want to do that work in community i just had to put

00:45:15.700 the emphasis on some um on some cliches that we often see uh in progressivism um okay let me try to

00:45:24.340 break that down for you a little bit if you're wondering what any of that means it kind of helps set

00:45:28.760 us up for understanding this particular prayer where it's coming from and why it's wrong so when this uh

00:45:35.440 when this website uh of evolving faith which is co-run by the editor of this book sarah bessie

00:45:42.960 when it says decolonize what does what does that mean that means less western less white

00:45:49.720 centering lived experiences of people of color lgbtq people decentering you'll hear those words

00:45:57.820 decentering and centering a lot uh decentering white cis gendered straight western males except

00:46:04.720 conveniently for uh carl marx i can't speak to what sarah bessie means by that completely or 0.88

00:46:13.580 everything that she believes so when i'm explaining what like decolonization and sometimes deconstruction

00:46:19.700 looks like i'm not saying that this is exactly what sarah bessie believes but using that language this

00:46:25.320 is typically how those terms are defined in what they look like so what happens in the so-called

00:46:31.280 decolonization of your faith process is that you take out the parts of the bible that are culturally

00:46:38.160 inconvenient that are confusing they're unpopular like the bible's teachings on sexuality on marriage on

00:46:44.720 sin on sanctification obedience salvation and you replace them with that which is culturally 0.98

00:46:52.300 acceptable politically liberal socially permissible today um they replace progressive holiness and i mean

00:47:01.720 progressive as in literal progress of holiness throughout our lives uh through the holy spirit with

00:47:07.460 quote doing the work that always includes uh operating from voting with and pushing for leftism and leftist

00:47:15.420 policies like you're just not going to find someone who is politically conservative who also has this kind of

00:47:21.720 mentality about faith or is on this faith endeavor endeavor um it's a different faith entirely it's a

00:47:29.720 different theology it's a different worldview entirely from that of orthodox christianity um it sees jesus not

00:47:35.840 as a savior from sin but a liberator from systems he's not a king but he is an oppressed activist god's

00:47:42.960 kingdom is not something that is coming one day and will one day manifest itself through jesus's victory over

00:47:48.740 sin and satan but is rather something that can be manifested through us via social justice which

00:47:56.120 always conveniently includes again left-wing social causes so acceptance of abortion transgenderism 0.97

00:48:02.680 redistribution of wealth reparations you name it uh people who hold to this don't always by the way get

00:48:09.280 it entirely wrong on everything not everything that they say is necessarily untruthful sometimes they can

00:48:16.400 recite scripture well they may even point out to flaws in traditional evangelicalism or in the united states that

00:48:23.180 are valid but like i said they're operating from a different worldview of an orthodox christianity a different

00:48:29.780 starting point with different goals in mind and a different method and path that they're taking from that start

00:48:36.660 to that end that always is extra biblical and most often is anti-biblical

00:48:42.680 many times they'll go so far as to say that a biblical inerrancy is a white supremacist

00:48:50.460 construct or a patriarchal construct or that objectivity or the idea of absolute truth or

00:48:57.160 white supremacist constructs and they will use this as a way to reject real theological debates over

00:49:03.780 scripture they will justify taking a verse out of context and applying it and interpreting it how they

00:49:09.400 want to according to their politics or according to their political ideology uh because they deny

00:49:16.740 that there is any one way to read scripture they deny the coherent inerrancy and infallibility and

00:49:23.460 authority of scripture so of course if you're deconstructing and decolonizing you're allowed to take

00:49:28.920 verses however you want out of context and apply them however you see fit but of course this is

00:49:35.680 fallacious this post-modernist denial of absolute truth that they so fiercely defend and put forth

00:49:43.700 and use as a bludgeon on evangelicals who believe in inerrancy and infallibility and authority of

00:49:50.240 scripture because by by them saying that you are wrong for believing in the inerrancy of scripture

00:49:57.260 or uh or objectivity or absolute truth they are asserting their own version of absolute truth

00:50:04.280 and actually showing that they are more willing to depend on their own inerrancy authority and

00:50:09.480 infallibility than the bibles and so both camps believe in inerrancy and infallibility and

00:50:15.480 authority it's just that like one side one camp traditional christianity believes that about god's word

00:50:21.500 and the other camp progressive christianity believes that about themselves um and that's what

00:50:29.060 this uh paradoxical progressive christianity does just like the prosperity gospel it replaces the god

00:50:37.860 of scripture with the god of self ibram kendi we've talked about this he said recently uh in a in a video

00:50:44.900 that was going around on twitter that jesus is not a savior uh but that anti-racism can literally save

00:50:51.780 humanity which is super convenient since he is like the most prominent writer of books about

00:50:57.460 anti-racism and so it's very convenient to say that what you believe and what you write about and

00:51:02.600 what you get paid tens of thousand dollars to speak about is going to save uh humanity and it's actually

00:51:08.980 a human construct that's very interesting rafael warnock tweeted the other day we talked about uh we

00:51:15.600 talked about this on monday's episode uh that by helping others we can save ourselves that that's the most

00:51:22.500 that's actually the more transcendent meaning of easter he said and these are great examples of

00:51:28.940 um of of what i'm talking about in this decolonization liberation theology but the bible speaks directly

00:51:36.780 against that kind of mentality that we heard ephesians 2 8 through 10 says this for by grace you have been

00:51:44.920 saved and this is not your own doing or have been saved through faith and this is not your own doing

00:51:50.060 it is the gift of god not a result of works so that no one may boast how emphatic is god through paul

00:51:57.140 about your inability to save yourself and then verse 10 says for we are his workmanship created in christ

00:52:04.160 jesus for good works which god prepared beforehand that we should walk in them so we are called to

00:52:10.760 good works good works are very important it is a part of our faith james says uh faith without work

00:52:16.300 is dead but that does not mean that we take any part in saving ourselves god is so clear in this

00:52:21.920 passage that you don't get to boast that it's a gift that i gave you by grace that you are dead in

00:52:27.740 your sin you're made alive in christ that is something that i offered you not because you're

00:52:32.260 good and you earned it but because i am good and because i am gracious and the salvation that you have

00:52:38.680 your uh your your saving of your soul cannot be done by you no amount of decolonization or

00:52:46.380 deconstruction or helping others or moralism or liberation is ever going to get you there god

00:52:52.460 makes that so very clear uh whenever someone says they are decolonizing or deconstructing their faith

00:52:59.960 that's always an indicator that that person is a proponent of something that is radically different

00:53:05.860 in every theological soteriological eschatological way than orthodox christianity which is exactly why

00:53:15.080 and where we get a prayer like the one that we just read by the woman dr shaniqua barnes or walker barnes

00:53:20.160 uh here's a little bit of her background according to her website dr shaniqua walker barnes is a

00:53:26.880 clinical psychologist public theologian and ecumenical minister whose work focuses on upon healing the

00:53:34.320 legacies of racial and gender oppression her faith has been shaped by methodist baptist and evangelical

00:53:40.640 social justice communities as well as by buddhism and islam about her book um i bring the voices of

00:53:49.960 my people a womanist vision for racial reconciliation her website says drawing upon intersectionality theory

00:53:57.660 and critical race studies she demonstrates how living at the intersection of racism and sexism

00:54:03.580 exposes women of color to unique experiences of gendered racism that are not about relationships

00:54:10.280 but rather are about systems of power and inequity so when i say that this is a part of critical race

00:54:17.820 theory and intersectionality that is not me invoking this boogeyman that doesn't exist her website

00:54:22.520 literally owns that says that and we'll talk about again in just a second what that means and why

00:54:29.200 that's important and the reminders that we get of ethnic gnosticism when we read a description like

00:54:36.660 that but first like i just want to remind you of some of the things that the prayer says so dear god

00:54:42.360 help me hate white people she says i'm talking about the uh fox news loving nice ones that will invite me

00:54:50.820 over to dinner but are nonetheless racist to commit these kinds of microaggressions and so she is asking 0.98

00:54:58.640 god also to harden her heart against these people to see them as the ku klux klan and um to realize that

00:55:06.840 they are people who have blasphemed the holy spirit and need to be handed over to the evil one so these 0.63

00:55:11.780 are uh people that she believes these well-meaning white people that she believes are racist she wants 1.00

00:55:18.700 to hate she wants to harden her heart against them and she wants them to go to hell that is what she 0.99

00:55:23.600 is praying about what do we even say to that like what do we even say i mean what do we even say to 0.89

00:55:30.620 that kind of madness this comes from a heart and i say this like as sincerely as possible that is steeped

00:55:40.720 in bitterness and resentment and selfishness and loathing and self-glorification and narcissism

00:55:49.560 now remember what i just read from that prayer and then let me read you colossians 3 5 through 17

00:55:57.900 put to death therefore what is earthly in you sexual immorality impurity passion evil desire 0.91

00:56:06.840 and covetousness which is idolatry on account of these things the wrath of god is coming 0.98

00:56:11.540 and these you too once walked when you were living in them but now you must put them all away

00:56:17.420 anger wrath malice slander and obscene talk from your mouth do not lie to one another seeing that

00:56:25.320 you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self which is being renewed 0.83

00:56:29.840 in knowledge after the image of its creator here there is not greek and jew circumcised and uncircumcised 0.97

00:56:35.560 barbarian scythian slave free but christ is all and in all then it keeps going and i wanted to stop 0.89

00:56:42.900 there i wanted to give you a shorter passage but the next part is really important and applicable to

00:56:46.980 put on then as god's chosen ones holy and beloved compassionate hearts kindness humility meekness and

00:56:54.940 patience bearing with one another and if one has a complaint against another forgiving each other as

00:57:01.360 the lord has forgiven you so you must also forgive and above all and above all these put on love

00:57:08.280 which binds everything together in perfect harmony and let the peace of christ rule in your hearts

00:57:14.840 to which indeed you are called in one body and be thankful let the word of christ dwell in you

00:57:21.420 richly teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs

00:57:27.420 with thankfulness in your hearts to god and whatever you do in word or deed do everything

00:57:32.980 in the name of the lord jesus giving thanks to god the father through him that's not just something

00:57:38.260 that dr walker barnes needs to hear that's something that we all need to hear ephesians 4 31 is very

00:57:44.820 similar let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you along with

00:57:54.560 all malice be kind to one another tender hearted forgiving one another as god in christ forgave you

00:58:02.300 first john 4 20 if anyone says i love god and hates his brother he is a liar for he who does not love

00:58:09.880 his brother whom he has seen cannot love god whom he has not seen galatians 5 22 through 23 but the fruit

00:58:17.920 of the spirit is love joy peace patience kindness goodness faithfulness gentleness self-control against

00:58:26.040 such things there is no law her prayer that she thinks is to god is actually an appeal from hell

00:58:35.780 there is nothing godly about this now here is how sarah bessie justified it on twitter

00:58:42.100 um well first of all dr walker barnes says apparently a screenshot of my prayer from a

00:58:50.740 rhythm of prayer is floating on the socials the folks critiquing have never have clearly never read

00:58:56.660 psalms other than 23 and 100 because then they'd recognize what it's modeled after sarah bessie

00:59:02.640 responds i think my eyes just rolled out of my head grateful for you dr shaniqua walker barnes says

00:59:09.440 it's funny because people are acting like they're super good christians who have never seen such a

00:59:14.640 prayer they're essentially admitting they don't actually pay attention to scripture and then i saw

00:59:19.300 i think it was sarah bessie or someone saying oh yeah they're telling on themselves right right it's

00:59:25.580 people who have a problem with you asking god to help you hate people of a certain skin color who don't

00:59:31.760 agree with you politically to have the bible wrong not you right the hubris here is just amazing so 0.67

00:59:37.980 she claims that this is modeled in scripture this kind of uh prayer of of just what what they are

00:59:46.360 calling honest and raw and real before god i don't see any anything that mirrors this in scripture

00:59:56.080 nothing the only thing that maybe i could think if you decontextualize it is anywhere close to this

01:00:02.340 kind of thing psalm 139 oh that you would slay the wicked oh god oh men of blood depart from me

01:00:10.020 they speak against you with malicious intent your enemies take your name in vain do i not hate those

01:00:15.540 who hate you oh lord and do i not loathe those who rise up against you i hate them with complete hatred 0.61

01:00:21.820 i count them as my enemies but the only way the only way that you could see this is comparable to her

01:00:29.740 prayer is if you qualify all white people the white people that she's talking about so not the

01:00:35.260 acceptable white allies who have proven to this person their own uh that they have reached this

01:00:44.360 person's version of righteousness um as wicked uh which is what critical race theory does which is why

01:00:52.320 it is so frightfully dangerous but hang on a second let's back up in this chapter like even if we were

01:01:00.180 to say okay this is reflected in scripture which it's not by the way unless you are saying that all

01:01:06.260 white people are wicked which you don't have any biblical precedent for calling one race of people

01:01:11.620 wicked because of what someone that looks like them may have done or because they don't reach your 0.99

01:01:18.600 standard of what you think is sufficiently righteous and virtuous and anti-racist no biblical precedent

01:01:23.760 for that whatsoever but let's even just back up a little bit in this very chapter and see why even if

01:01:31.580 you are trying to say that you're modeling this god help me hey white people prayer off of the bible 0.66

01:01:36.760 it just doesn't work like let's just back up a few verses pro-lifers know these verses 13 through 16 of

01:01:43.340 chapter 139 of psalm of the psalms very well for you formed my inward parts you knitted me together

01:01:51.700 in my mother's womb i praise you for i am fearfully and wonderfully made wonderful are your works my soul

01:01:57.440 knows it very well my frame was not hidden from you when i was being made in secret intricately woven

01:02:02.500 in the depths of the earth your eyes saw my unformed substance in your book were written every one of them

01:02:07.700 the days that were formed for me when as yet there was none of them now i do wonder just as an aside

01:02:13.680 if dr walker barnes is against abortion i would guess not something tells me maybe it's the pronouns

01:02:22.400 in her bio that she's probably pro-choice but the point is in reading this particular passage that white

01:02:32.680 people black people brown people were fearfully and wonderfully made in their mother's womb 0.98

01:02:38.940 god loves people of all different kinds of skin colors he made them intentionally with the skin color 0.99

01:02:45.660 that he did made them all in his image and ascribes value to them not based on their melanin count

01:02:51.980 uh but based on their humanity now i understand that in the world of critical race theory white

01:02:58.780 isn't necessarily a melanin count whiteness is a construct and therefore it is uh justified to be

01:03:07.100 able to see whiteness as evil but that still ascribes a certain kind of collective wickedness and guilt

01:03:15.020 onto people who have that skin color and that's why it's just so ugly it's so ugly he uh ultimately 1.00

01:03:23.460 and eternally classifies people of all different kinds of skin colors and categorizes image bearers

01:03:29.740 not by their race ultimately but by their faith in christ either as ephesians 2 says we are all equally

01:03:37.700 dead in sin there are different levels of dead apart from christ or we have been made alive in christ by

01:03:43.560 grace through faith when david is speaking of wicked people in psalm 139 talking about hating people

01:03:50.160 he's talking about people who hate god he's not talking about people with a certain skin color

01:03:54.840 or whose politics you find abhorrent or people who don't fit into your standards of sufficient

01:04:00.000 righteousness or people who don't engage in your brand of social justice activism but people who

01:04:05.600 have rebelled against god who work against god according to god's standards who commit evil in god's

01:04:11.540 sight according to god's standards who ironically very often exemplify exactly the kind of hard-hearted

01:04:18.480 pride and bigotry that we see emulated in this very prayer uh here's what else sarah bessie the

01:04:26.540 editor of this book has to say she says if you actually read the whole prayer you see the context of

01:04:31.960 that line you see her asking like jesus modeled for a cup to pass from her you get a glimpse of her

01:04:39.440 grief her lament her weariness of the burden of calling white people to repentance and confession

01:04:44.000 oh man and so then she she goes on to say i have something to say specifically about that part of

01:04:51.460 saying that this is a jesus modeled prayer uh when jesus prayed to let this cup pass from him got a lot

01:04:58.840 to say about that but she goes on to say she literally says a few lines into the prayer i'm not talking 0.96

01:05:04.740 about the white anti-racist allies so as my granny would say the pig that's bit squeals i love how she 0.99

01:05:13.420 thinks that that makes it better that she only wants to hate like white conservatives who will 0.99

01:05:17.920 watch fox news apparently that's like a justification for asking god to help her hate 0.93

01:05:22.320 only certain white people okay got it uh she said the prayer that is being splashed across uh across

01:05:28.360 every social media platform ends with her trusting god her resolution to carry it as to carry on as an

01:05:33.820 agent in ministry uh of justice and reconciliation she picks up her cross and rises again because her

01:05:40.600 brand of social justice activism is of course what jesus is talking about when he says take up your

01:05:45.320 cross and follow me so here's what we're getting out of that justification from sarah bessie

01:05:51.120 um that the people who are mad it's not just that we don't get it um it's that we're racist of course

01:05:58.820 that's what is always given as the explanation for anyone who disagrees with this kind of thing

01:06:04.880 critical race theorists love what is called a kafka trap it's a logical fallacy that prevents them

01:06:10.940 from actually having to engage in arguments so if you disagree with them it's it's not just because

01:06:18.200 maybe they're wrong or maybe because scripture points to something different or there's another

01:06:21.760 point it's because you're demonstrating white fragility or white supremacy it's a very

01:06:27.240 unintellectual but convenient way to respond to pushback also let me get to this point which i just

01:06:34.200 think is so important jesus did not model this prayer at all in any way what blasphemy i mean

01:06:42.080 that just guts me to read something like that uh in one of the most heartbreaking chapters of the bible

01:06:48.200 matthew 26 jesus says then he said to them peter james and john my soul is very sorrowful even to death

01:06:55.960 remain here and watch with me and going a little farther he fell on his face i mean i could just get

01:07:02.660 choked up right now reading this and prayed saying my father if it be possible let this cup pass from me

01:07:10.320 nevertheless not as i will but as you will who jesus is talking about the crucifixion that he's about to

01:07:19.880 face the torture the betrayal the rejection the murder the pain the distress the desperation the wrath

01:07:28.540 that is going to be drained from the cup that he will have to fully drink on our behalf that line

01:07:35.540 from how deep the father's love for us um it always it always gets me i can't get through it singing it

01:07:42.180 i'm not gonna cry but i'm not gonna i'm not gonna cry while i'm saying it but singing it i can't ever

01:07:46.280 get through it without crying but if you haven't heard it that lie that says ashamed i hear my mocking

01:07:51.840 voice call out among the scoffers it was my sin that held him there until it was accomplished his

01:07:57.800 dying breath has brought me life i know that it is finished seeing that we as sinners are represented

01:08:04.540 among the scoffers when it comes to jesus's crucifixion how humbling for all of us if we all

01:08:11.400 had that mentality we wouldn't be praying prayers about hating people that look a different way or who

01:08:17.940 look like someone who has offended us at one point you're telling me that a prayer asking god

01:08:26.460 to help her hate white people is similar to the prayer that the son of god prayed in the garden 0.87

01:08:34.300 of gethsemane before he endured a gruesome death on a cross for the sake of our sins you mean the prayer 0.75

01:08:41.480 that he prayed out of total allegiance to god the father an unfathomable love for us for sinners to

01:08:49.400 the point of ultimate sacrifice that's what you think this petty prideful satanic prayer is like

01:08:56.480 i want these women to know the gospel so much desperately sincerely i desperately want them to

01:09:04.300 know the wonder and the richness that lies in the word of god in jesus christ and the good news that he

01:09:10.160 brings i'm afraid that these women have totally lost the plot and missed the point worldliness and 1.00

01:09:18.080 devilish doctrine has so intoxicated them that they cannot tell the truth from a lie they don't know the

01:09:25.180 difference between love and hate between righteousness and disobedience this prayer makes me so sad it gives

01:09:32.660 me a pit in my stomach and not for myself i don't care if she hates me i'm sad for her that she is

01:09:39.160 carrying this burden that she does not need to carry and is commanded if she is a christian not to carry 0.91

01:09:45.280 i pray truly that the lord would relieve her of this burden would open her eyes would draw her to

01:09:52.400 himself and free her to realize that her callousness is not just sinful but deadly and yes of course it

01:09:59.480 makes me sad for the readers for society that this putrid malignancy is going to spread and teach 0.98

01:10:06.520 black and brown people to hate people because of their skin color and that there are going to be 1.00

01:10:12.640 mothers who teach their babies to hate other babies because of their skin color if this is what is being 0.99

01:10:18.820 passed around and passed down we are doomed i mean honestly do women who pray these kind of prayers do

01:10:25.720 they also hate children of a certain skin color who have never done anything against them or anyone

01:10:32.500 who looks like them it sounds like they actually think whiteness is the original sin the inherited sin 0.78

01:10:38.680 and that's the i mean that's the natural implication of that kind of thinking hating people that you don't 0.94

01:10:44.980 know because of their skin color is racism it's just as bad as a white racism against black people that

01:10:53.480 resulted in all kinds of horrific injustices throughout american history it doesn't matter that 0.60

01:10:59.820 progressives have tried to say that only white people can be racist because the new definition

01:11:04.100 of racism is prejudice plus power and because in this worldview of critical race theory only white

01:11:09.760 people have power and so only white people can be racist i'm sorry i have no obligation to agree 0.95

01:11:15.940 with stupidity and exchange the actual definitions of words for new and illogical definitions 0.98

01:11:20.960 and because i feel morally obliged to keep insisting that two plus two and d equals four 1.00

01:11:27.400 i will continue to refuse to agree with that inane assertion clearly non-white people can be racist 0.64

01:11:36.300 clearly they can show bias and bigotry and their melanin count will not justify them will not justify

01:11:42.780 any of us before god do you hear that that's that's the important thing here your melanin count your

01:11:49.440 lived experience your intersectionality points your self-categorization as on the side of the

01:11:55.660 oppressed will not justify you before god it will not absolve you of your guilt it will not earn you

01:12:02.240 righteousness only christ can do that that is what the collectivist form of justice of critical race

01:12:09.440 theory does not understand because white is bad and black is good in critical race theory so it's totally 1.00

01:12:16.660 fair game and actually logically necessary to say that you must hate white people and categorize all of 0.98

01:12:22.820 them no matter what no matter how poor or weak or disabled they are as oppressors unless they're 1.00

01:12:28.760 white people who happen to agree with you and have proven to you that they've done the work they've

01:12:33.560 met your standards they fit into your qualifications of what it means to be a decent white person they've

01:12:40.620 effectively divested of their whiteness in a way that you approve of if they don't do those things then 0.99

01:12:46.380 they're apparently just bad awful people who are oppressors and they're totally worthless and worthy 0.92

01:12:52.560 of hate this is what vodibachum calls ethnic gnosticism it's a form of standpoint epistemology we just talked 0.93

01:13:00.060 about this the other day uh the idea that special knowledge and even special righteousness is granted to

01:13:06.980 people special clarity special insight is granted to people in the world of uh critical race theory

01:13:13.580 according to skin color and categorizing yourself according to skin color um on the side of the

01:13:20.460 oppressed it will always lead to confusion it will always lead to hate it will always lead to resentment

01:13:27.060 it will always lead to death church christians you gotta stop messing with this stuff stop getting close 0.90

01:13:35.940 to it stop flirting with it stop preaching a message of repentance to your white congregants that you don't 0.96

01:13:42.680 preach to your black congregants stop saying that this stuff is a tool for understanding history

01:13:47.820 or that it's at least somewhat a useful framework for understanding injustice it's not it's not it's also

01:13:55.400 not new by the way here's james cone in his 1970 book a black theology of liberation uh cone uh cone advanced

01:14:06.680 this kind of uh uh idea of god being on the side of black people and against white people he says black theology

01:14:15.980 refuses to accept a god who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community if god is not for us 0.99

01:14:22.640 and against white people then he is a murderer and we had better kill him the task of black theology james cone says 0.99

01:14:30.760 is to kill gods who do not belong to the black community black theology will accept only the love 1.00

01:14:37.100 of god which participates in the destruction of the white enemy what we need is the divine love as 1.00

01:14:43.960 expressed in black power which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by 0.96

01:14:50.180 any means at their disposal unless god is participating in this holy activity we must reject 0.97

01:14:55.740 his love exchanging the god of scripture for the god of self stop preaching pastors two different

01:15:04.220 gospels that excuse sin and bad theology in one group but not the other i mean that is so patronizing

01:15:12.280 it's bigoted it's racist people of all colors need the same gospel that doesn't mean that we have all of

01:15:20.160 the same history or all of the same experiences that we can't bring different perspectives to the table

01:15:56.980 us clearly in his word and stop looking to doctrines of hate and trying to find love it's not going to

01:16:02.640 work stop preaching intersectionality and secular moralism stop adopting the world's definition of

01:16:10.680 justice and reconciliation in exchange for biblical definitions stop misusing and abusing micah 6 8 please

01:16:17.580 to mean something that it does not mean stop viewing the world and people primarily through the lens

01:16:22.800 of melanin i promise you that this doesn't end well it doesn't end well for the church it doesn't end
