00:00:58.940 compilation of prayers from various women and this prayer that has kind of gone viral and that people

00:01:05.480 are talking about starts with dear god please help me hate white people so we're going to talk about

00:01:13.200 that and the problems with it it might seem obvious but i think that our analysis of that prayer and

00:01:21.200 breaking down what's wrong with that kind of perspective is going to be very edifying to you

00:01:26.420 so let us first start with this rachel hollis drama so like i said she posted a video on tiktok that

00:01:34.640 she shared on instagram that she received a ton of backlash for and before we play it i want to give

00:01:42.120 you some context just in case you don't know who rachel hollis is she is the best-selling author of

00:01:47.880 girl wash your face she also wrote a book pretty recently um i think last year it came out called

00:01:53.000 girl stop apologizing if you've read my book you're not enough and that's okay we talk about rachel

00:01:58.720 hollis's um mindset her work her theology she's basically a life and business coach her books use

00:02:07.380 her own experiences to try to help women gain confidence to fix their relationships their health

00:02:14.240 their business endeavors she and her now ex-husband she announced a divorce not too long ago uh dave

00:02:22.340 hollis uh hosted conferences inspiring or i guess she still hosts these conferences inspiring women to

00:02:29.180 be their best selves she has become very very famous from all of this very rich it seems like very

00:02:36.360 influential and you'll see why i'm saying the very rich part in just a second um in the beginning of

00:02:42.220 her rise to fame a lot of christian women a christian woman that i know followed her because you know

00:02:48.300 she claimed to be a christian herself she seemed to be um maybe on the conservative side of things just a

00:02:54.940 normal happy mom an entrepreneur who wanted to help other women uh achieve their goals and the issue that

00:03:03.340 i have with rachel's work even though there were a lot of people that i like and know that that followed

00:03:09.760 her and listened to her is that she preaches and has always preached the gospel of self-fulfillment of

00:03:16.540 self-satisfaction she propagates what i call in my book uh trendy narcissism that everything that you

00:03:23.820 need to be whole to be healed to be happy is is found or can be found buried deep inside you and you

00:03:31.020 just have to do the work of of finding and unleashing that inner goddess that has been held back by

00:03:36.860 societal expectations or toxic relationships or whatever and that stuff might be motivating enough

00:03:43.080 uh to help you reach your long-term goals or your short-term goals uh but it's not how the bible

00:03:49.680 describes us it's not the picture that the bible lays out of who we are and what our journey actually

00:03:54.920 is the bible says that we are to be as christians totally relying on god for our ultimate fulfillment and

00:04:01.900 satisfaction that doesn't mean that we don't work hard that we can't be disciplined or that we can't

00:04:06.180 have goals but those things ultimately aren't going to be our satisfaction we are called in the bible

00:04:13.140 to deny ourselves to put on the new self given to us by christ and then to follow him to go to him as

00:07:20.000 align with god's will that god has called you to do um but that's not our promise our promise is not that

00:09:37.240 person for life advice or like my spiritual guru or anything like that um but it's not just that chunk

00:09:44.720 of her audience like she's also seen as problematic for other reasons none of which i just listed

00:09:49.360 because the the other people on the other side of the aisle i would say like more of the progressive

00:09:54.740 um activists the progressive self-help gurus wouldn't agree with anything that i just said like

00:10:07.800 biblical um they have more of a problem because of um because of her emphasis on what they would

00:10:17.120 probably say is like capitalistic toxicity like pull yourself up by your bootstraps kind of thing

00:10:22.420 but she's also um just generally been seen as problematic because she's been accused of plagiarism

00:10:35.100 articles on this and it doesn't like it doesn't look good i don't know if that's what she meant to do

00:11:35.020 woman who comes to my house twice a week and cleans she's my my house cleaner she cleans the toilets

00:14:47.960 with that what i think is that this post was a whole lot of ego and that doesn't surprise me like

00:15:53.080 someone who helps with cleaning i have a team at work who helps to build this business and i think it's

00:15:57.480 crucial that i keep talking about that i could very easily pretend that i don't have any assistance

00:16:03.600 um and so she's like kind of asking these questions in this apology if i were reading all the slides then

00:16:10.120 you would see that she was like so like was it upsetting to you for this reason well here's my

00:16:18.400 i found a little patronizing and i found like i'm sorry i found it to be like i'm sorry you feel

00:19:20.940 way of advice and then what women get like this is the self-empowerment guru for women rachel hollis

00:22:23.740 privilege and disparities in my opinion all of that still misses the point like that to that's not why

00:22:31.080 this was problematic it was problematic because she does actually disregard the hard work of other

00:22:37.560 people who haven't who who who haven't had the same life and the same opportunities that she has like

00:22:44.900 hard work it's not necessarily i'm sure she does really work hard and you can work hard in a lot

00:22:52.020 of cases and do what she does and get what she gets but there are a lot of people that work really hard

00:22:58.100 that can't ever afford a housekeeper like there are teachers that work really hard for years and years

00:23:08.580 be accountants there are going to be a stay-at-home moms who who don't work that have worked really

00:23:45.200 really up for debate but regardless i agree with her critics that this was just totally off and to me

00:23:54.600 it revealed something that is actually going on in her and i and i hope because we're all imperfect

00:23:59.300 and we all make mistakes and we all post things and say things that we shouldn't say i do hope that

00:24:04.500 she learns from this but i hope that she learns the right lesson in that i hope that god humbles her

00:25:07.520 believes rachel hollis's video was problematic she says it was steeped in meritocracy i worked hard

00:25:13.980 first of all i don't have any problem with meritocracy like i do believe that rachel hollis probably did

00:25:20.540 work hard i have a problem with what i just articulated a couple minutes ago but i again

00:25:25.860 this like critical race theory idea that meritocracy is inherently racist and bad i just don't get on

00:25:32.660 board with that at all paternalism the sweet lady who cleans my toilets that's she said that this post

00:25:37.960 or rachel hollis's video had paternalism i agree that part was very cringy for me the sweet lady who

00:25:43.940 cleans my toilets no thanks and she says this post um demonstrated white supremacy no sis apparently

00:25:59.840 did nothing but cause harm to so many people so i will pray for those she harmed and pray for her

00:26:57.120 that's not enough i won't just go after her pocketbook and ignore her heart i will pray she's in pain so i will

00:28:25.820 so many different reasons here's the problem with this kind of response even though it sounds so close

00:28:38.020 to being right it sounds so close to being good it's shrouded with that righteous sounding language

00:28:42.780 it almost sounds biblical you're using the sermon on the mount here to be a peacemaker is this really

00:28:49.880 peacemaking like is this what god is talking about when he's talking about peacemaking like i agree that

00:28:55.800 peacemaking is not just sitting back and allowing things to happen it doesn't mean that you can't

00:29:01.200 disagree uh with people i do agree that if you are to be reconciled to someone who has actually wronged

00:29:57.980 it's used in scripture denotes um authority it denotes uh the the requirement of having authority

00:30:07.040 to hold someone accountable so we as constituents we hold elected officials accountable we have that

00:30:13.820 authority or we're supposed to be able to have that authority because this is a government for the

00:30:17.880 people and by the people and of the people um and as uh as an employer you hold your employees

00:30:25.260 accountable you give them certain metrics and certain goals and you can fire them that's another part of

00:30:30.840 accountability that we talked about there has to be almost like a consequence that someone has the

00:30:36.180 authority to dole out if a standard is not reached by the person they are holding accountable and yes a

00:30:42.140 friend can hold you accountable but only when you give them that access and the authority to do so so

00:30:49.480 there is a particular position that you have to have in some kind of hierarchy or some kind of

00:30:55.500 relationship in order to be able to say that you are holding people accountable like it is not your job
