00:00:00.000 Hey guys, welcome to Relatable. Today I'm going to be sitting down with Phil Robertson of Duck
00:00:05.980 Dynasty. We're going to be talking about his new book and faith and parenting and all the stuff
00:00:11.560 going on in the country right now and why the Word of God is more important for us to stand on
00:00:16.840 than ever, or at least as it's ever been. First, I want to talk about the movie Unplanned. So a lot
00:00:22.420 of you guys have reached out to me about this, asking me if I've seen it. I did see it all the
00:00:26.820 way back in February. I saw it with my mom. And as someone who is pregnant, I'm just going to be
00:00:31.320 real with you. It was really hard to watch. You see a lot of the things that you often just hear
00:00:36.480 about when you are hearing about or reading about abortion. I was bawling, like spontaneously burst
00:00:43.320 into tears. I could not control myself. And that's why I think it's so important for people to see.
00:00:47.920 You've probably heard the controversy that's surrounding it. They got an R rating by the MPAA.
00:00:53.600 This is kind of an attempt to maybe prevent Christians or to steer people away with children
00:00:59.560 away from seeing the movie. They also want to make it harder for young people who need to see
00:01:07.440 the consequences of abortion to see it. Abby Johnson herself, who the movie is about, she had two
00:01:14.200 abortions. She worked for Planned Parenthood. She was a staunch supporter of abortion, so much so that
00:01:20.600 even her mom and her husband could not convince her to think differently. And you're going to see
00:01:25.160 that in the movie. She rose really quickly throughout the ranks of Planned Parenthood.
00:01:29.440 She became the director of the clinic where she worked. But all of that changed when she was called
00:01:34.520 to assist with an actual abortion one day. And that's the scene that's just super compelling.
00:01:39.560 And what she witnessed during that abortion totally changed her perspective and changed her life.
00:01:44.220 And so this movie is about that story. The movie Unplanned brings us an eye-opening look inside the
00:01:51.380 abortion industry, I'm quoting, from a woman who was once its most passionate advocate. So you can go
00:01:57.160 to unplannedfilm.com. That is unplannedfilm.com. It is playing now. I promise that you are not going to
00:02:05.480 leave the theater the same way as when you walked in. So go to unplannedfilm.com and see where this is
00:02:13.620 playing near you. Okay, now we are going to talk to my new friend, Phil Robertson. Phil, thank you so
00:02:20.900 much for joining me. Hey, no problem. I'm really excited to learn more about your book. I've already
00:02:25.140 read the press release and stuff, and it looks like something that not only I want to read, but also my
00:02:30.540 audience wants to read. Because you talk about the denigrating and the stealing of the American soul.
00:02:35.360 So can you expound on that a little bit? You read texts in the Bible, and they are numerous.
00:02:47.440 They're 2,000-year-old writings. Yeah. 2,000 years ago. You're like, low, low-tech world.
00:02:57.100 But big empires were there, Roman Empire. They ruled the world. Right. Gigantic, you know,
00:03:06.640 works of art, stadium. If you've ever seen it, I've seen it. You're like, and writings like this.
00:03:14.680 And this is what spurred me to write the book. Since they did not think it worthwhile. He's writing to
00:03:21.860 the Roman Empire. The Romans. Since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God.
00:03:32.640 I mean, get every vestige of God out of your psyche. He gave them over to a depraved mind to do what
00:03:43.500 ought not to be done. You say, well, what is it that they do? Here's the list. They've become
00:03:51.080 no knowledge of God. They've become filled with every kind, filled with every kind of wickedness,
00:03:58.820 evil, greed, and depravity. They're full of envy. Listen to this. Murder. You're like, murder?
00:04:07.440 Murder, envy, strife, deceit, malice. They're gossips, slanderers, God-haters,
00:04:17.440 insolent, arrogant, boastful. You say, it sounds like the internet, which I've never clicked on to
00:04:25.720 ever. I don't have a cell phone. I don't see it. I don't hear it. I'm oblivious to it. And he ends
00:04:32.840 that section up by saying they disobey their parents. And here's four words that describe
00:04:39.120 Paul's writings to the Romans. So it will be up to us to read these writings and say, I wonder if
00:04:46.480 that's still pertinent today. Right. They are the ones who say there is no God. They are senseless.
00:04:56.220 What's a human being like if they're characterized by being senseless? They're faithless.
00:05:07.880 No God. They're heartless. They will slaughter their gifts from God, their own children. They will
00:05:19.020 slaughter them. You're like, what are you doing? And they're ruthless, heartless and ruthless.
00:05:29.460 I read those texts and I'm like, whoa, be terrible times in the last days. People be lovers of money,
00:05:38.320 lovers of themselves, not lovers of good, lovers of pleasure. And you just start down the list,
00:05:45.180 you know, and you say, their feet are swift to shed blood. So I said, you know, Jesus said in John 8,
00:05:54.860 the devil is the father, the father of lies and the father of murder. So John the apostle and some of
00:06:07.620 would come along 5,000 years from the first recorded murder that I know of when Cain killed
00:06:18.500 his brother Abel in the field. Here's the exact read. This is the message we've heard from the
00:06:24.780 beginning. And here's what I'm trying to do. We should love one another. Don't be like Cain.
00:06:33.220 He goes back 5,000 years. Think about all the people that have been killed in the 5,000,
00:06:39.280 you know, read the Old Testament. You say, whew, he goes back to the first murder. Don't be like Cain
00:06:45.260 who belonged to the evil one. There wasn't but four people on the earth. Right. Adam, Eve, Cain,
00:06:53.520 you're like, and they couldn't even get along. Right. They couldn't even get it right. Don't be like
00:06:58.240 Cain who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. Why did he murder him? Because his own
00:07:04.160 actions were evil and his brothers were righteous. Just start there and you say, my goodness at the
00:07:12.880 murders and the human race. So my task is to get people to understand when they say, but if God would
00:07:25.260 just say something to me, then I would know he's there. If he would just talk to me, I'm like,
00:07:30.980 what do you want him to do? Write you a letter? He's written you 66 letters explaining who he is.
00:07:39.520 And I have a book, having never used a cell phone, but I have a thick book that's full of text messages.
00:07:48.000 Right. And it starts out by saying, God says, I made it. Love me and love each other.
00:07:58.700 How hard could it be just to get up in the morning? I haven't sinned today. Right.
00:08:05.020 I got up this morning over here at some hotel in Dallas, Texas. I'm talking to you. You said,
00:08:09.640 Phil, has there been any filthy language coming out of anybody's mouth? Right. No. No.
00:08:14.820 You said evil thoughts? No. You're like, so there's been no fits of rage? None. Has there
00:08:21.740 been any hatred? No. I'm on planet earth. I got up this morning. You say you have trained yourself
00:08:29.200 with the scriptures to just get up and be good for crying out loud. Yeah. How hard could it be? I mean,
00:08:38.120 really? I think for a lot of people, my generation, especially, they do think that it's hard because
00:08:44.060 the most important thing that we're told, and you might not have seen this since it's mostly
00:08:48.480 propagated on social media, the most important thing we're told is to feel good about ourselves
00:08:53.120 and to just be ourselves and to do what's convenient. And you quoted that passage from Romans
00:08:58.340 that talked about how people are going to be when they give up God. And you also talked about,
00:09:03.300 they're going to be lovers of self. Well, the big thing today, I don't know if you've heard the term
00:09:07.480 self-love, but self-love is the big trend, even among so-called Christians, is that all you have
00:09:14.260 to do is love yourself. Then you're going to be confident and happy. But scripture has a lot to say
00:09:19.200 about self-love and how that's really not what we're called to. It's self-denial, which I think
00:09:24.260 is a lot of why we're experiencing what you're talking about. Yeah. You got to remember, you say,
00:09:29.600 okay, so let me get this right. The prediction is made in Genesis chapter 3, verse 15, way back.
00:09:40.620 Someone from a woman, the seed of a woman will crush Satan. You say, what? What does it mean?
00:09:48.180 So from Genesis all the way through Malachi, the whole Old Testament, Jesus is coming starting in
00:09:59.500 Genesis 3. He's coming for He would be born, what they would call Him, what He would say,
00:10:05.400 what He would do, prophecy after prophecy after prophecy for 5,000 years. So finally,
00:10:12.140 Jesus is coming in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, there's a big change. Yay, Jesus is here.
00:10:20.940 The one we've been talking about for 5,000 years, Jesus is here. Well, everyone can look at Him and say,
00:10:29.380 what did He say? What did He do? Why was He here? He said, I've come down to remove every mistake
00:10:39.700 you've ever made. I've come down to set you free from Satan, set you free from sin. You do have
00:10:49.060 sins, don't you? Well, yeah, I've made some mistakes. He took them all away. Set you free from the guilt
00:10:57.000 of it all. Cleanse your guilty conscience. You're like, that would be a big one. Oh, set you free from
00:11:05.620 of law of works, having to be perfect and try to never make a system of law where there was no
00:11:14.360 provision for sin. There was no provision. So they kill the animals and the bulls and the goats. You
00:11:20.800 say, but it never took away their sin. It just reminded them they were guilty as charged. Jesus
00:11:26.860 comes, perfect God, mistake free, allows them to kill Him. That's why He came in flesh. He let them
00:11:35.820 get their hands on Him. He never makes a mistake. Alabeth, look what they did to Him. They brutalized
00:11:44.920 Him, but He's God in a human body and only He was big enough to be the big enough sacrifice
00:11:51.720 to get us out of them under our law of works. Save us sin, guilt, the same. You're like, and finally
00:11:59.140 delivered us by His resurrection from the grave. Now we're talking immortality is on the table.
00:12:09.760 Freedom from sin, immortality, and all we have to do is embrace that, repent, turn,
00:12:17.620 and get up in the morning, love God, and love each other. I'm just saying, it's all been-
00:12:27.100 It's not that complicated. It's not theological. It's not pie in the sky. You're like, what a
00:12:33.600 story. I'm 72. You say, so Phil, when you asked people, do you have a better story? Really?
00:12:45.280 Life, peace of mind, no guilt, sins are removed. Man, peace of mind on planet Earth. And you know
00:12:57.300 you're going to be raised from the dead. That's not the end of you. You'll live on. God says,
00:13:02.920 it's impossible for me to lie. And since there's no bigger one to swear by than me, I'm going to swear
00:13:09.520 by myself. I will deliver you from your sin and I will give you eternal life. It's impossible for
00:13:16.500 me to lie. I'm telling you, I'm going to do that. And He said, keep that as an anchor for your soul
00:13:24.180 because you have hope. Hope is an anchor for our soul. So I'm looking at the world. I love them. Even
00:13:31.200 the ones that curse me and all that, I don't hold it against them. Not at all. The vitriol that's
00:13:37.400 directed toward me from time to time. You're like, I never hear it. I never read tweets and I'm on
00:13:42.900 the internet, but I hear that some are cursing me and bad-minded me, but it doesn't bother me in
00:13:48.300 the least. Think about it. Look what they did to my Lord. And He never made a mistake. I'm a sinful
00:13:54.480 man saved by the graves of God. You're like, you're going to make some mistakes. Yeah. By the way, after
00:14:00.600 He was raised from the dead, He spent 40 days to show Him. He was convinced Him He's alive. Thomas didn't
00:14:06.720 believe it. He said, what about it? Look at these marks. Thomas falls down in front of
00:14:13.940 him and says, my Lord and my God. It was a wonderful thing for Thomas to realize, good
00:14:24.640 night. I'm here. I watched him. I just didn't think he could beat death. So he beat death
00:14:31.060 for all of us. He goes back to where he came from. The Bible says He's there 24-7 interceding
00:14:38.500 for us because when we make mistakes and we're walking in the light and we're loving our neighbor
00:14:44.320 and we're loving God, we still are weak. So when we make a mistake, He's there 24-7 to not count
00:14:52.280 our mistakes against us. That's what grace is all about. You're like, that is a good
00:14:58.440 deal. Oh, it's the best deal we're ever going to find while we're on planet Earth. So I'm
00:15:05.840 sitting here basking in the grace of God saying, yeah, a little cussing, a little, take a few
00:15:10.260 cussings from time to time, but literally it does not bother me. In other words, your love
00:15:16.000 for your neighbor, it can't be contingent upon how they feel about you because you'll
00:15:22.400 end up. So when they curse me, I'm like, my love's not contingent on whether you love
00:15:28.440 me or not. I love you anyway. I don't want you cursing me.
00:15:31.560 Because that's what Christ did for us while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
00:15:35.260 So we need to get out and about. Not so much, we shouldn't be known for people who go to church
00:15:43.140 because it's a couple of hour meeting in a structure that a big wind blew away. You
00:15:48.980 say we, God's people, the body of Christ, we are the church. So Paul to the Romans, he
00:16:00.600 said, look, in view of God's mercy, his death for us, his burial, resurrection, in view of
00:16:07.880 that. Offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. It's not Sunday
00:16:16.080 today. You and I are not in church. We're two members of the church worshiping God with
00:16:24.700 an audience listening in. What they just heard, and I made sure they did. You said, you made
00:16:31.140 sure they heard the gospel of Jesus before you're going to leave here today. Yeah, it's
00:16:36.380 my job. I'm a proclaimer. Check it out. See if it's true or false. It's a story. You've
00:16:43.960 got one that'll top it. What? Come on out with it. What you got? We've got removal of sin
00:16:50.680 delivered from Satan, delivered from guilt, delivered from a law of works and resurrection
00:16:55.540 from the grave for crying out. What else do you want? You're like, I mean, while you're on
00:17:00.800 earth, I've never heard of a story like that ever. Have you? No, nothing like it. We're
00:17:06.760 counting time by him. It's 2019 years since Jesus showed up over here. Well, what were
00:17:12.900 all the years before Jesus got here? The rednecks would say, I'm like, they're called all the
00:17:18.680 years before Jesus got here. Right. Exactly. Everything centers on him. One individual, whoever
00:17:25.800 walked on planet earth, Jesus Christ, and he's the one our calendars based on. Yeah. That
00:17:31.340 lets me know something. He was here. Right. He was here. No doubt. It's not just a myth.
00:17:37.840 So tell me about how you have raised four sons, lots of grandkids and great grandkids and how
00:17:45.360 you have passed down this legacy of faith to them since I am about to be a mom in June.
00:17:49.980 Yeah. The Lord has blessed you with the gift of life. Yes. You know, I never mentioned,
00:17:56.820 you know, I didn't know you were pregnant. And I know because one time I walked up to the one of
00:18:02.440 the sisters, I say, well, good night, girl. I didn't know you were pregnant. And she said,
00:18:06.800 I'm not. Oh, no. I'm like, and Kay calls me out, my woman outside. She said, you idiot. Don't ever tell
00:18:12.500 a woman. Okay. So you learned your lesson. I didn't know a girl who just picked up a few pounds.
00:18:16.980 So I wasn't going to say anything. You know, I'm just going to say, yeah, I better keep my mouth
00:18:21.240 shut. So you say, how do you do it? Look, all scripture is God breathed. It's useful for teaching,
00:18:33.300 for rebuking, strong reprimand, for correcting. That's not quite the path you want to take, son.
00:18:44.240 Let me explain something to you. And for training in righteousness so that the man of God will be
00:18:51.180 thoroughly equipped for every good work. One of my sons, I'll give you his name in a minute.
00:18:57.340 He came to me one time out of Beth and he said, dad, he said, what are STDs? What is that?
00:19:07.940 I'm looking at him. I said, come over and sit down, son. Let me explain to you what STDs are.
00:19:13.940 So I gave him a speech on the ravages of STDs. By the way, in America, there are 110 million
00:19:32.260 Americans who are suffering from a sexually transmitted disease at any given time.
00:19:38.560 I didn't know that.
00:19:39.820 CDC, Center for Disease Control. Read it. When I read it, I like the fellow off the chair. I said,
00:19:45.220 my goodness, one out of three. And some of these things are debilitating. Some of them,
00:19:51.920 death is involved in it. You're like, but none of them are any good. So he comes and wants to find
00:19:57.580 out about it. I gave him a speech and I was using terminology in the redneck world. We just spout it
00:20:04.820 out. There's microbes out there, son, running around. And they follow that kind of behavior.
00:20:12.120 People who sleep around with this one and that one. And I said, there's microbes running around
00:20:16.660 that will eat your genitals off your body. Well, he tells the story now. And he said,
00:20:24.840 my dad gave me the speech on STDs one time. He said, y'all have to remember, I wasn't but eight.
00:20:32.240 Oh, wow. So he was probably scared to death.
00:20:36.240 So he's eight. But he said, to let everyone know in this audience tonight, he gives this story. He
00:20:44.380 said, when I started dating my girlfriend, Missy, she was one of the sisters up there at church,
00:20:52.360 Godly girl. He said, when we dated, he said, I waited until we married before there was any sex
00:21:00.840 involved. He said, you know why? I never forgot that speech.
00:21:04.920 Yeah. He might've been eight, but he remembered it.
00:21:07.160 He remembered it. So he said, I remain pure until I married and I've kept my sex right there. He said,
00:21:13.960 but my dad gave me a speech one time. So a lot of what people would say, well, you're too harsh.
00:21:19.560 You shouldn't tell. I just told him the truth.
00:21:22.680 It worked. It was effective.
00:21:24.200 It worked very effective. So I had four sons. So none of the other three ever came and told me that
00:21:30.500 so we all sin in many ways, but you say, but there was one who got it, but you know,
00:21:38.440 that's the reason Jesus died for us to remove our sin. I used to be in my own, get drunk, get high.
00:21:43.760 I mean, until I was 28. But I repented and turned to God. And now if someone had told me
00:21:50.260 one day you'll be running around calling about Jesus, I would have thought, are you crazy?
00:21:57.340 Yeah. No one would have ever, including me, would have ever believed that.
00:22:01.820 Yeah. Any other final parenting advice? Anything specifically for girls? I heard
00:22:07.420 from a good source that you don't, you don't agree with girls wearing makeup.
00:22:11.780 With girls wearing makeup?
00:22:13.280 You don't, you don't agree with girls wearing makeup.
00:22:15.520 Nah.
00:22:15.920 Or is that not true?
00:22:16.900 Not true.
00:22:17.600 Not true. You're fine with it.
00:22:18.540 Not true. I just don't, I don't personally go into the hair and makeup room.
00:22:24.260 Yes.
00:22:25.020 Because I tell them I'm 72, it's too late. Forget all that.
00:22:29.380 Yeah.
00:22:29.640 So I'm not worried about that kind of stuff at all. See what I'm saying?
00:22:32.680 Yeah. It's not your realm.
00:22:34.020 No.
00:22:34.680 Okay. Any other final words of wisdom for us? This was so great.
00:22:38.260 No, I just.
00:22:38.520 Thank you for clearly articulating the gospel.
00:22:40.980 I know that's your job.
00:22:42.520 Yeah. They've heard the gospel. I'll just, I'll just end with this. This is a great text.
00:22:48.220 And a lot of people get confused about this. Let no debt remain outstanding. Pay your debts.
00:22:56.020 Let no debt remain outstanding except, except, this is the debt we owe as human beings.
00:23:03.720 The continuing debt to love one another. Now watch this.
00:23:10.100 For he who loves his fellow man has fulfilled the law. All the commands. Don't do this. Don't do that. Don't do this. Don't do this.
00:23:21.000 You say, how do you deal with that? Just love your neighbor. It'll be okay.
00:23:27.540 Watch. The commandment, do not commit adultery. Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not covet.
00:23:36.300 And whatever other commandment there may be, they're summed up in this one rule.
00:23:42.960 Love your neighbor as yourself. Love does no harm to its neighbor.
00:23:50.800 You're like, I can fulfill all those texts about don't do, don't do, don't.
00:23:57.280 If, if you love your neighbor, you're not going to shoot him.
00:24:04.720 You're not going to kill him. You're not going to hate him.
00:24:08.840 You're not going to curse him. You love him.
00:24:12.780 You say, love, it would solve the problem for all the things that we're told to do and not do.
00:24:22.240 That's why the two greatest commands in the Bible are love God and love your neighbor.
00:24:28.960 Alabeth, how hard could it be?
00:24:32.760 It's only difficult until you decide to do it.
00:24:37.480 If you decide to do it, you, you get the training from God and you say, you put it into practice all the time, wherever you are.
00:24:49.000 In the duck blind, you say, there's no mischief going on there.
00:24:53.040 No, at home, at dinnertime, we're thanking God for the meal.
00:24:57.560 We're loving one another.
00:24:58.800 You say, there's not chaos.
00:25:00.560 You don't have to live like that.
00:25:02.000 It's a hard sell because the evil one, as I wrote in the book, is so powerful.
00:25:09.380 He lies and we buy into it and we, we check the color of people's skin.
00:25:18.380 From one man, Adam, God made every nation of men.
00:25:22.240 He determined the time set for them, the exact places they should live.
00:25:25.640 You say, we all came from one person, Adam and his wife Eve.
00:25:30.520 That's where we all came from.
00:25:32.900 I don't even know what color Adam was.
00:25:35.280 I have no idea.
00:25:36.440 You're like, you say, there's just one race on planet Earth.
00:25:41.900 It's the human race.
00:25:44.080 It's the human race.
00:25:46.040 All of us, worldwide.
00:25:48.620 So when we look out at them, people, all this, this race thing.
00:25:53.860 You're like, what is wrong with them?
00:25:56.200 Our college professor said, you have the negroid race, the Caucasian.
00:25:59.720 And the Mongol law, they got it, broke it all up into sections.
00:26:03.960 And everybody, I'm like, come on.
00:26:08.200 It's not what the Bible says.
00:26:09.720 No.
00:26:09.960 It's really simple.
00:26:11.280 Human race.
00:26:12.420 Yep.
