00:00:00.000 It's called Brain Games Conformity Waiting Room, sent by Luke.
00:00:04.040 Pay attention.
00:00:07.520 Take a look at this crowded waiting room.
00:00:10.000 These people may appear to be waiting for the eye doctor,
00:00:12.700 but they're actually waiting for the first test subject in our hidden camera experiment.
00:00:17.340 And here she is, right on time for her 12 o'clock appointment.
00:00:21.480 Hi, how are you doing?
00:00:24.180 This woman thinks she's here for a free eye exam. 1.00
00:00:27.740 Have you been here before?
00:00:28.580 No, it's my first time.
00:00:30.120 What she doesn't know is that everyone else in this room is working for us.
00:00:34.960 Gideon, you want to get on stream?
00:00:36.440 They'll be with you in just a couple minutes.
00:00:38.540 Today we're running an experiment on social control.
00:00:40.720 Thanks, Chris.
00:00:41.360 The test starts now.
00:00:46.420 Did you hear that?
00:00:50.440 These people sure did.
00:00:58.580 It doesn't take long for our test subject to notice a pattern.
00:01:05.120 Beep means stand up.
00:01:06.860 But why?
00:01:08.080 And if you were in her shoes, what would you do the next time the tone sounds?
00:01:12.780 While you might think you make your decisions all on your own.
00:01:16.620 Look at the pressure on her face right now. 1.00
00:01:18.180 Fuck, am I the only one? 1.00
00:01:19.520 When it comes to peer pressure, all too often, your brain is just following the crowd. 1.00
00:01:26.740 It's all around you, every day.
00:01:31.300 An invisible force you're probably not even aware of.
00:01:34.520 It affects what you do, how you think, and who you are.
00:01:38.980 It's called social conformity or peer pressure.
00:01:41.960 And while it might not sound like a good thing, it's actually not so bad.
00:01:45.460 The truth is, your brain craves synchronicity and takes comfort in the ease and efficiency
00:01:50.260 of just going with the flow.
00:01:52.080 And whether it's simply knowing what to wear in the morning, supporting your team at the
00:01:55.820 big game, or even marching off to war, we're all programmed to be part of the group.
00:02:01.000 And that's because your brain knows that there's power.
00:02:05.360 So think about it, Chad. 1.00
00:02:06.320 Like, my advice is if you're doing the same shit that everybody else is doing, if you're 0.98
00:02:10.120 echoing the opinions that everybody else is echoing, maybe you didn't come up with 0.99
00:02:14.060 them on your own.
00:02:14.640 Maybe you should be a free thinker to some extent, because all of you are just saying,
00:02:18.420 Black, white matter, take this thing, I'm doing it right. 0.99
00:02:22.220 Like, if everyone believes in it, it's probably wrong. 1.00
00:02:26.600 If a bunch of bots believe in your shit, it's probably wrong. 0.99
00:02:30.380 If the rich people aren't doing it, it's probably right. 1.00
00:02:33.860 Power in numbers.
00:02:35.100 We set up a hidden camera experiment to see if this woman. 1.00
00:02:38.420 Chill out, Chad. 1.00
00:02:38.960 The volume's just low on this shit. 1.00
00:02:40.080 This is an old-ass fucking TV video. 1.00
00:02:41.600 This is, it's all the way up. 1.00
00:02:42.420 Would stand up at the sound of this tone, simply because everyone else is.
00:02:47.800 You might be thinking you'd never go along with this.
00:02:51.060 Or would you?
00:02:51.800 I've always been the opposite.
00:02:59.260 I've always been that guy that just wants to do exactly the opposite of what everyone
00:03:02.700 else is doing, just because I'll always try hard.
00:03:05.000 After just three beeps, and without knowing why she's doing it, this woman is now conforming
00:03:12.980 perfectly to the group.
00:03:14.580 Look at her observing, too.
00:03:19.640 But what happens if we take the group away?
00:03:24.600 Elaine, please.
00:03:25.500 Now she's been trained.
00:03:44.020 She's still going to do it after they leave, right?
00:03:45.560 What's the correlation between Asians and still wearing double masks? 0.93
00:03:57.720 Is it just the lack of wanting to be an independent thinker?
00:04:00.720 The crowd is gone, and nobody is watching her.
00:04:03.780 But is it, I don't know, I've been thinking about it a lot since the pandemic.
00:04:06.620 Like, why is it that Asians are still everywhere they go? 1.00
00:04:09.300 Not only are they, are Asians less free-thinking, but also succumb to peer pressure, like, way 1.00
00:04:17.440 more.
00:04:19.360 Accept our hidden cameras.
00:04:21.220 What do you think she'll do?
00:04:23.600 Get up.
00:04:27.820 But!
00:04:32.660 There you go.
00:04:36.740 That's how it works.
00:04:37.680 She's now conforming to the rules of the group without them even being there.
00:04:44.280 Wow.
00:04:46.500 Now, watch what happens when we introduce another outsider who doesn't know the rules. 0.91
00:04:52.800 Have a seat, and they'll be out in just a couple minutes.
00:04:55.240 She's going to echo the conformity, and he's going to do it, too.
00:04:59.360 That's how they get you.
00:05:00.280 Thanks so much.
00:05:07.680 Is she going to tell him?
00:05:11.320 Is she going to tell him, oh, you have to stand up.
00:05:17.700 Bro, how long is she waiting for her appointment, bro?
00:05:24.200 Because we have to.
00:05:25.180 Everybody was doing it, so I thought I was supposed to.
00:05:29.320 Think she'll teach the new guy what to do?
00:05:33.360 Yep.
00:05:35.480 Bot is a disease.
00:05:42.860 Oh! 1.00
00:05:44.780 Shit, this shit is contagious. 1.00
00:05:46.160 Stop the spread of bot. 1.00
00:05:48.240 Stop the spread of bot, chat.
00:05:56.480 We kept the cameras rolling as more unsuspecting patients arrived. 1.00
00:06:00.340 Wait, look how stupid y'all look, bro. 1.00
00:06:15.800 This is how y'all look, injected this shit. 1.00
00:06:19.840 It's the same exact shit. 1.00
00:06:21.940 It's the same shit. 1.00
00:06:23.440 You're saying that this is... 1.00
00:06:24.300 No, chat, fuck you. 1.00
00:06:25.340 Because you're saying that this looks dumb. 1.00
00:06:28.080 But how dumb is it walking around? 1.00
00:06:30.340 That looks stupider, because you can't breathe. 1.00
00:06:35.340 They're just doing that. 0.99
00:06:40.320 And slowly but surely...
00:06:42.340 What began as a random rule for this woman 0.95
00:06:47.800 has now become the social norm for everyone in this way.
00:06:52.160 Oh, my God.
00:06:53.160 Bro, chat, it's not actors.
00:06:54.740 This is real.
00:06:55.640 I'm telling you, this is real. 0.99
00:06:56.620 This is exactly how the mass shit worked. 1.00
00:06:58.180 It's exactly where all of you got injected. 1.00
00:07:00.080 All of you, 90% of people. 1.00
00:07:03.100 It's exactly why you believe in this shit you believe. 1.00
00:07:05.140 It's exactly why you posted a black square on Instagram. 1.00
00:07:08.220 Here to explain what's going on in their brains
00:07:11.820 is Jonah Berger of the University of Pennsylvania.
00:07:15.140 This sort of...
00:07:15.740 This is bots.
00:07:17.640 ...of internalized form of herd behavior
00:07:19.440 is part of what we call social learning.
00:07:21.660 Starting at a very early age,
00:07:23.160 when we see members of our group perform a task,
00:07:25.200 our brains literally reward us for following in their footsteps.
00:07:27.660 I like following orders, because I don't like thinking for myself.
00:07:30.840 When I saw everybody stand up, I felt like I needed to...
00:07:34.680 Social pressure. 1.00
00:07:35.620 Oh, shit. 1.00
00:07:36.260 Everyone's doing it. 1.00
00:07:37.040 I want to conform.
00:07:38.580 I don't want to be left out.
00:07:40.480 I'm a good boy.
00:07:42.380 Otherwise, I'm, like, excluded.
00:07:44.460 Once I decided to go with it,
00:07:47.380 then I felt much more comfortable.
00:07:52.920 Conformity is how we become socialized,
00:07:54.920 but it can also cause us to develop bad habits
00:07:56.880 or repeat past wrongs.
00:07:58.440 And it's why even this rebel,
00:08:00.360 who wasn't standing for any of this nonsense...
00:08:03.460 Woke.
00:08:07.780 You feel me?
00:08:09.320 ...eventually joined the ranks.
00:08:10.880 No!
00:08:14.580 You were one of the good ones!
00:08:16.160 Like, he looked at the regret on his face, too. 0.99
00:08:17.860 He thinks it's stupid, but you don't want to be... 0.97
00:08:20.100 Nobody wants the pressure being looked at by everybody else. 0.99
00:08:22.980 That's why it was so easy for everyone to get this.
00:08:25.820 Because, like, 30% was like, yeah!
00:08:28.840 And the other people were like, well, okay.
00:08:30.380 And then everyone else was like, well, my mom told me to do it. 0.99
00:08:32.940 And then fucking everybody got it. 0.99
00:08:35.580 And the only thing more shocking 0.99
00:08:37.280 than seeing how easily conformity affects the way you act...
00:08:40.880 ...is that similar forces are subconsciously shaping
00:08:45.420 the way you think right now.
00:08:52.700 That's it.
00:08:53.380 Is it your job?
