00:02:20.180 In response to this ongoing debate, Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina introduced a resolution requiring House members
00:02:28.680 to use the bathroom corresponding with their actual sex, not the clothes that they wore that morning.
00:02:35.380 This resolution was entirely reasonable and should have been easy for Republicans to defend.
00:02:41.180 Unfortunately, the GOP's handling of the situation turned into a complete clown show.
00:02:46.780 The first misstep occurred when Speaker Mike Johnson refused to answer a straightforward question about whether McBride was a man or a woman.
00:02:56.400 During a press conference addressing the issue of bathrooms and locker rooms, Johnson dodged the question multiple times,
00:03:03.540 instead stating that every member deserved dignity and respect.
00:03:07.240 While this sentiment is ultimately true, it was obvious that Johnson was using it to evade directly addressing McBride's sex.

00:05:29.320 Using the left's framing and language is always a misstep.
00:05:34.720 Attempting to validate your opponent's position to expose perceived hypocrisy
00:05:39.780 often results in rhetorical failure for conservatives.
00:05:44.160 More troubling, however, is the cognitive dissonance revealed in Mace's statement.
00:05:48.560 On one hand, Mace seems to defend female-only spaces,
00:05:53.860 operating under the conservative belief that men and women are inherently different
00:05:58.760 and that women deserve spaces apart from men.
00:06:02.100 On the other hand, she wants to be celebrated as a feminist for breaking gender barriers at the Citadel,

00:06:11.100 Mace wants to be honored for helping to deconstruct male-only spaces,
00:06:15.380 but like so many before her, she is horrified when the cultural revolution she championed
00:06:21.360 arrives at her own bathroom door.

00:06:28.640 Allowing men into female bathrooms and sports raises immediate safety concerns,
00:06:33.860 and efforts to protect women in these spaces are entirely justified.
00:06:38.480 However, discussions with combat veterans about the effects of unit safety and cohesion
00:06:44.160 after introducing women to frontline roles reveal parallels that are more striking than they seem at first.
00:06:51.220 Mace managed to voluntarily step on another rake by later tweeting out,

00:07:12.780 I'm not sure who Mace thinks she's speaking on behalf of with the use of the word we there,
00:07:19.380 but ultimately she doesn't seem to understand the basic linkage between the revolution she's
00:07:25.160 supporting openly in her tweets and the reason she is now having to face the invasion of female
00:07:31.280 spaces by men who happened to change their clothes that morning.
00:07:35.120 The redefinition of marriage was simply the first step in a wider attempt to redefine gender,
00:07:41.920 sex, family, and everything about our social structure.
00:07:45.600 Mace's support of this revolution as a Republican puts her to the left of Barack Obama and Hillary
00:07:51.560 Clinton in 2008 when they were both running for president when they affirmed that marriage

00:08:10.900 Ultimately, Mike Johnson needs to grow a spine or probably even better be replaced, but much
00:08:16.060 more importantly, the conservative movement needs to decide what it really believes about
