00:00:00.000 Flavio Bolsonaro has fled to America after losing his bid for the presidency of Brazil in a stunning
00:00:06.020 upset. Bolsonaro led in the first round of elections and was expected to secure victory
00:00:11.060 until his opponent, Lula da Silva, received a surprising surge of votes from unlikely sections
00:00:16.880 of the country. Flavio's father, Jair Bolsonaro, is currently serving a 27-year jail sentence after
00:00:23.760 his loss to Lula during a contentious election in 2022. While Donald Trump has stated that the
00:00:30.140 results of the election seem suspicious outside of providing temporary asylum for Flavio,
00:00:35.620 it seems like the administration doesn't intend to take action to address the questionable results.
00:00:41.020 Despite the highly questionable nature of the election, no one in the international community
00:00:45.740 is acting to intervene on Bolsonaro's behalf. The entire episode should serve as a warning
00:00:50.800 to conservative Americans that no one is coming to save them if the U.S. elections fall apart.
00:00:56.680 Jair Bolsonaro proved to be a controversial right-wing leader both inside his country and
00:01:01.580 on the international stage. His opposition to gay marriage, abortion, affirmative action,
00:01:07.540 secularism, and drug decriminalization placed him at odds with the fashionable opinions of
00:01:13.500 the global elite, as did his desire to strengthen relations with the U.S. and Israel. During his
00:01:20.160 bid for re-election, Bolsonaro faced the far-left former president, Lula da Silva. The sitting
00:01:26.260 president claimed systematic fraud, including hacked voting machines, during the election.
00:01:31.740 But the Brazilian Supreme Court, which is known for its leftist opposition to Bolsonaro,
00:01:36.600 ruled that the politician had conceded the election by authorizing a transfer of power.
00:01:42.180 Large crowds formed to protest the decision while Bolsonaro fled to Florida.
00:01:46.200 JR denounced the protest and denied responsibility, but he was still sentenced to 27 years in prison when he eventually returned to Brazil.
00:01:55.040 Without a thorough review of both elections by independent organizations, it's impossible to know whether the Brazilian races were fraudulent or not.
00:02:04.100 And given the progressive political leanings of most of the organizations that conduct such reviews,
00:02:09.020 it's unlikely that they would declare the election illegitimate if blatant evidence was uncovered.
00:02:15.080 Even if an independent agency somehow did claim that one or both of the Bolsonaro's had been cheated out of a victory,
00:02:21.680 it's unlikely that there's a government or an international body out there somewhere
00:02:25.400 willing to take action to pressure Brazil into removing Lula and installing Flavio.
00:02:30.520 The results of the elections may appear highly suspect,
00:02:34.200 but Lula remains in office and will be allowed to further consolidate power and punish his enemies.
00:02:39.340 Without some external authority to appeal to, the right in Brazil seems to be trapped in a very dangerous situation.
00:02:46.760 In the United States, the legitimacy of elections has become an incredibly contentious subject.
00:02:52.800 It's difficult not to see the parallels between the fate of Jair Bolsonaro and Donald Trump.
00:02:58.400 Trump also lost a contentious election with highly questionable vote-counting procedures,
00:03:02.540 had his challenges denied by the Supreme Court, and ultimately faced criminal charges after a
00:03:08.120 crowd of his supporters entered the Capitol building in protest. The billionaire eventually
00:03:12.640 returned to office, but Democrats have already prepared for the next contentious election.
00:03:18.260 It was recently revealed that Democrats have several organizations working in concert to
00:03:22.760 prepare governors for the possibility of domestic turmoil due to contentious elections. During a
00:03:28.660 conducted by the United Democracy Alliance, members of the organization outlined how civil
00:03:34.020 unrest could be fomented after a contested election and how it could be used to demand
00:03:38.920 radical changes or even to replace the Constitution itself. Some have tried to play this off as a
00:03:44.920 simple preparation for a contingency, but this is absurd. The Democrats are predicting the
00:03:49.720 breakdown of electoral politics and are planning radical action in response. The fact that the GOP
00:03:55.040 isn't building its own playbook for such a scenario conveys the serious naivete of both
00:04:00.340 party leaders and voters. To call the Congressional Republicans a total failure would be a mistake.
00:04:06.620 They have refused to solidify the Trump agenda into permanent legislation, and many of the
00:04:11.180 administration's greatest victories could be quickly reversed the minute a Democrat enters
00:04:15.660 office. The fact that the SAVE Act, a piece of legislation critical to avoiding the exact kind
00:04:21.240 situation we're witnessing in Brazil has failed to pass is frankly criminal. Calling this a failure
00:04:27.640 would be a mistake because this is what GOP politicians were hoping to achieve. Republicans
00:04:32.640 would rather run out the clock on Trump in the hopes of destroying MAGA's hold over the party
00:04:38.080 than secure a future for the country. Elected GOP politicians hate their voters so much that
00:04:44.080 they would rather engineer an environment where they are more likely to lose, throwing the country
00:04:48.740 into chaos than admit that the party establishment needs to be replaced. It's critical that
00:04:55.280 conservatives realize what time it is. Appeals to the rules and a sense of fair play are not
00:05:01.140 going to save you if the Democrats decide to rig elections. A stern lecture on the importance of
00:05:06.700 civic responsibility is not going to stop riots. Brilliant arguments about the separation of
00:05:11.900 powers won't prevent the courts from manipulating the law to secure a victory for progressives.
00:05:16.900 Just like the Bolsonaro's, your pleas for justice will mean nothing when your enemies lock you in prison for 30 years.
00:05:24.160 Unlike the unfortunate Brazilian presidential candidates, American conservatives have nowhere to flee when things go wrong.
00:05:31.520 There will be no objective outside institution, no strong geopolitical actor who steps in and restores law and order.
00:05:39.160 The GOP seems incapable of taking our existential moments seriously, but conservatives must demand more.
00:05:45.500 sleepwalking our way into a brazilian nightmare would be a terrible fate we owe it to our ancestors
00:05:51.600 and to our posterity to fight to maintain america right now
