00:00:30.220 After Vladimir Zelensky's disastrous meeting at the White House last week,
00:00:34.460 every progressive pundit rushed to announce the impending collapse of the rules-based international order.
00:00:40.640 Delusional commentators explained that any Ukrainian peace negotiation
00:00:44.580 which acknowledged Zelensky's intransigence would signal the end of international law and national sovereignty.
00:00:52.280 The assumption there is that international law is some kind of higher power to which countries can appeal
00:00:58.180 and which the United States is bound to maintain.
00:01:01.840 In truth, international law and the supranational bodies that theoretically maintain it are not guarantors of national sovereignty.
00:01:10.280 They're actually the forces that will most likely destroy it.
00:01:13.620 Sovereignty is defined as wielding supreme power.
00:01:18.200 Having the ability to make the final decision on any given issue.
00:01:22.840 Sovereign entities will consider the interests of other parties and even the limits of their ability to project power beyond their own borders.
00:01:30.240 But ultimately, a sovereign power is one that can make the final decision on its own.
00:01:36.700 A sovereign nation doesn't need to check with other nations,
00:01:39.900 and it doesn't need to appeal to a higher international body to validate its decisions.
00:01:44.700 If a leader is appealing to an outside body to establish the sovereign rights of their nation,
00:01:50.120 then they've misunderstood the meaning of that term.
00:01:53.220 The political philosopher Thomas Hobbes grounded the principle of sovereignty in the state's ability to protect the people that it governs.
00:02:02.120 A state that couldn't protect its own citizens or borders could not, by definition, be sovereign.
00:02:09.320 No nation can last long without protection from hostile forces.
00:02:13.840 So if the people of a nation aren't able to provide for their own defense,
00:02:17.520 another political entity will assume protective duties and therefore achieve sovereignty.
00:02:24.160 Carl Schmitt echoed Hobbes' sentiment when he wrote,
00:02:26.960 If a people is afraid of the trials and risks implied by existing in the sphere of politics,
00:02:35.060 then another people will appear that will assume these trials by protecting it against foreign enemies and thereby taking over political rule.
00:02:44.320 The protector then decides who the enemy is by virtue of the eternal relation of protection and obedience.
00:02:51.760 End quote.
00:02:53.000 Despite the valiant effort of many Ukrainian men, the country is simply unable to defend itself.
00:02:59.700 Zelensky was installed as the president in a CIA-backed color revolution.
00:03:05.140 Western nations have sent hundreds of billions of dollars along with ammunition and advisors,
00:03:10.120 but even with all that assistance, the Ukrainian military has barely been able to keep pace.
00:03:16.920 The Russians certainly haven't been able to dominate in combat to the degree that they'd like,
00:03:22.380 but ultimately it's clear that without the backing of the United States and other NATO allies,
00:03:28.840 Ukraine would lose the war tomorrow.
00:03:30.940 In theory, international law and organizations like NATO exist to defend the sovereignty of nations
00:03:38.660 that otherwise couldn't stand up to great powers like the Russian Federation.
00:03:43.700 NATO was initially founded to defend Western nations from the expanding threat of the Soviet Union,
00:03:49.640 and even though that threat has dissolved, the military alliance persists,
00:03:53.780 at least ostensibly, to protect the sovereignty of its constituent members.
00:03:57.880 Despite the alliance losing its great antagonist, it's continued to expand,
00:04:03.280 forever advancing its territory closer and closer to the Russian border.
00:04:07.100 When I found out my friend got a great deal on a designer dress from Winners,
00:04:11.140 I started wondering,
00:04:12.780 is every fabulous item I see from Winners?
00:04:15.940 Like that woman over there with the Italian leather handbag.
00:04:18.880 Is that from Winners?
00:04:20.060 Ooh, or that beautiful silk skirt.
00:04:22.600 Did she pay full price?
00:04:23.840 Or those suede sneakers?
00:04:25.400 Or that luggage?
00:04:26.500 Or that trench?
00:04:27.400 Those jeans?
00:04:28.340 That jacket?
00:04:29.060 Those heels?
00:04:29.960 Is anyone paying full price for anything?
00:04:32.900 Stop wondering.
00:04:34.160 Start winning.
00:04:35.080 Winners.
00:04:35.660 Find fabulous for less.
00:04:37.220 We should make it clear that NATO is the United States,
00:04:41.460 and the United States is basically NATO.
00:04:43.900 The US provided $830 billion of NATO's $1.3 trillion budget in 2023,
00:04:52.060 with the next largest contributor being Germany, which clocked in at only $61 billion.
00:04:57.200 That's why Donald Trump has repeatedly asked European nations to increase their contributions to NATO
00:05:02.380 and to their direct national defense.
00:05:04.960 Previous US administrations have encouraged and facilitated the demilitarization of Europe while pledging to defend those nations with our own blood and treasure.
00:05:14.460 This alliance may have played a critical role in stopping the spread of communism when Europe was weakened by two consecutive world wars,
00:05:21.540 but having outlived its original purpose, it only serves to distort the reality of sovereignty in the modern day.
00:05:28.180 Officially, Zelensky is the president of an independent nation involved in a war of territory with a great world power.
00:05:36.920 In reality, the United States and its NATO allies are funding a proxy war with Russia.
00:05:42.900 Zelensky should have a great deal of authority,
00:05:45.880 but everyone knows that the real peace negotiations are occurring between Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
00:05:53.480 If the United States continues to fund the war, it could drag it on for years.
00:05:57.880 And if we withdraw financial and military aid, the conflict would be over tomorrow.
00:06:04.160 Ukraine can't defend itself, so it ultimately is unable to become the master of its own fate.
00:06:10.900 Ukraine is simply not sovereign.
00:06:13.620 Zelensky doesn't make the final decisions.
00:06:16.540 The Ukrainian president forgot this fact during his meeting in the White House,
00:06:20.900 but Trump didn't hesitate to remind him of it before showing him the door.
00:06:25.400 It would be comforting to believe that a collection of international laws written down in the charter of a supranational institution
00:06:33.980 could create an objective body to which lesser nations could appeal while maintaining sovereignty.
00:06:40.600 But this is just an illusion.
00:06:42.560 If a smaller nation must appeal to an international body,
00:06:46.820 it's ultimately appealing to the will of other sovereign nations that constitute that body.
00:06:53.360 The minute that one country must appeal to another state,
00:06:57.760 it's dependent on the power of that nation for protection and is no longer sovereign.
00:07:04.120 This geopolitical reality is disturbing to many because it ultimately means that very few nations are truly sovereign.
00:07:13.940 They may have some degree of internal political autonomy,
00:07:18.300 but even that can be quickly called into question.
00:07:21.500 The U.S. intelligence services have had a great degree of influence on the affairs of foreign nations,
00:07:28.540 in no small part because those nations are largely dependent on America for their own defense.
00:07:35.940 Samuel Huntington's analysis that geopolitics plays out as a clash of civilizational blocs
00:07:43.080 dominated by great powers has been proven correct.
00:07:47.120 Supernational organizations like NATO and the international law that they enforce
00:07:53.340 is simply a window dressing for the will of great powers acting on the world stage.
00:08:00.000 Civilizations will continue to clash in a contest of great power politics,
00:08:05.360 and for better or worse, everyone else is just along for the ride.
