Summary

How can anyone believe that Kamala Harris is popular, that price controls would solve inflation, or that open borders are ultimately good for the economy? How could an entire country founded on liberty allow their churches, schools, and businesses to be shuttered for years because of a nasty flu?

00:00:30.000 How can anyone believe that Kamala Harris is popular,
00:00:33.600 that price controls would solve inflation,
00:00:35.920 or that open borders are ultimately good for the economy?
00:00:39.380 How could an entire country founded on liberty
00:00:42.120 allow their churches, schools, and businesses to be shuttered for years
00:00:46.300 because of a nasty flu?
00:00:48.840 Even on the most fundamental truths of human existence,
00:00:52.300 like the difference between men and women,
00:00:54.260 our society seems to be incapable of recognizing obvious fact.
00:00:58.980 The cry heard most often from conservatives is one demanding a return to common sense.
00:01:04.660 But what many fail to understand is that common sense requires a common tradition.
00:01:10.340 Without a shared moral framework through which to understand our world,
00:01:15.020 self-evident truths quickly dissolve into a quagmire of relativism and propaganda.
00:01:21.460 Any society that grows beyond a certain size inevitably relies on the authority of institutions.
00:01:28.220 When a civilization is small, the authority of families and tribes provides a natural scaffolding
00:01:35.100 for social coordination through the perpetuation of religion, folkways, and traditions.
00:01:41.500 But as a society expands to encompass new territory and peoples,
00:01:46.700 it must shift some of that burden of authority into specialized institutions which allow coordination to scale.
00:01:55.360 These institutions often emerge out of the organic needs of society
00:01:59.760 and carry generations of hard-won knowledge,
00:02:03.060 making them critical pillars to the success of the nation.
00:02:06.200 This nexus of religious truth, cultural folkways, tradition, and institutional authority
00:02:13.520 combines to create what most people think of as common sense.
00:02:18.760 This thick web of culture allows the average person access to untold generations' worth of knowledge and wisdom,
00:02:25.900 effortlessly shaping the way they see the world.
00:02:28.580 Novel ideas about gender, history, or ethics are checked against the collective experience of society,
00:02:36.900 and only the most resilient new ideas are woven into the fabric of the tradition.
00:02:43.460 Like a fish in water that doesn't know it's wet,
00:02:46.420 an individual who's submerged in a proper culture
00:02:49.460 is guarded against the most poisonous extremes of ideology without even realizing it.
00:02:54.760 In 2024, the average American has lost all contact with the social forces that would create common sense.
00:03:03.180 The foundation of truth, a real and vibrant belief in Christianity, has been fractured.
00:03:09.840 Due to culturally indiscriminate legal immigration
00:03:12.920 and an open border that regularly allows millions of unvetted illegals to enter the country every year,
00:03:19.240 large foreign populations of different faiths
00:03:21.860 have radically altered the religious makeup of the nation.
00:03:26.220 Far more destructive is the modern obsession with secular neutrality,
00:03:31.240 which has sought to purge religious influence from both public institutions and private life.
00:03:37.720 Without a shared moral vision,
00:03:39.620 there can be no basis on which the average person arrives at a common sense conclusion.

00:04:01.400 The modern obsession with individual freedom has also broken down institutions of family and community
00:04:07.420 which are critical to grounding the culture.
00:04:10.220 Young people are encouraged to leave their community in search of education and employment opportunities,
00:04:16.300 abandoning the social networks which perpetuate their way of life.
00:04:19.900 Marriage and parenthood are coded as low status and individuals are instead encouraged to engage in a series of disposable relationships that allow them to focus on their empty careers as corporate widgets.
00:04:33.240 Young couples are priced out of the housing market and, separated from the assistance of extended family,
00:04:39.120 rely on expensive childcare while both parents work to make ends meet.
00:04:44.320 For most, the professional and personal cost of family make it a goal that is increasingly both unfashionable and out of reach.
00:04:52.460 Fraternities, church groups, bowling leagues, civic associations, and other voluntary social organizations that used to define American life have fallen away as families shrink
00:05:04.800 and irreligious, rootless cosmopolitans retreat to their apartments.
00:05:09.120 Online dating, Netflix, and grocery delivery make it possible to live a thoroughly modern life without any organic social contact.
00:05:19.660 Becoming middle class no longer means the independence of property and the posterity of family,
00:05:25.860 but access to a wider range of subscription services to be enjoyed in isolation.
00:05:30.300 The fact that this lifestyle helped to facilitate lockdowns across the population during the pandemic isn't an accident.
00:05:40.200 When the individual is separated from religious truth, cultural folkways, family, and even the most basic daily social interactions,
00:05:50.100 reality can quickly become distorted.
00:05:52.180 Common sense is not some inborn grasp of truth, but an inherited store of knowledge and wisdom that makes the navigation of complex scenarios seem obvious.
00:06:05.020 Without these organic social connections, the individual becomes untethered and highly susceptible to propaganda and suggestion.
00:06:13.960 The relentless tide of information flowing through television and digital media
00:06:18.860 combined with the curated algorithmic delivery of social media can rapidly and radically alter how an isolated actor sees the world.
00:06:28.700 With the continuity of tradition and the organic ground of community stripped away,
00:06:34.240 the individual becomes reliant on the authority of institutions as the basis for truth.
00:06:39.820 This can work for a time, but if those institutions themselves become separated from their founding duties
00:06:45.760 and the people that they were meant to serve, organizations that were meant to stand as pillars of truth
00:06:51.180 can quickly become conduits for lies.
00:06:55.140 Public health experts, scientists, journalists, academics, and even military leaders have proven
00:07:01.020 that they're willing to sacrifice credibility to conform to political power.
00:07:05.600 With this shattered epistemology, truth loses all ground and media manipulation becomes the engine through which the elites maintain power.
00:07:15.760 If conservatives wish to see the end of rule by media and the return to common sense,
00:07:21.920 they must first recreate the social fabric which enables it.
00:07:26.460 Individuals can only become resistant to media narratives if they have regular contact with reality
00:07:33.460 and a higher tradition against which to measure new information.
00:07:37.320 A man locked in his home, watching streaming entertainment, and having food delivered to his door
00:07:43.580 can be fooled into thinking a pandemic is ravaging the world outside.
00:07:48.140 A man who is regularly attending church, meeting with friends, and bringing his wife and children to the park
00:07:53.360 can easily observe that the media is spouting nonsense.
00:07:57.320 The solutions being offered by progressive politicians like Kamala Harris are absurd.
00:08:03.580 They stand in opposition to the moral truth, economic reality, and social custom that once seemed obvious to us all.
00:08:12.740 But as the shared social fabric which once bound our communities together has worn away,
00:08:18.560 common sense has lost its foundation, and isolated individuals have become highly susceptible to manipulative media and corrupt institutions.
00:08:29.480 If conservatives would like to see a return to common sense,
00:08:33.200 they must first revive the traditions and communities that once informed all that we held in common.
