Summary

In the wake of the September 11th, 2011 attacks in the United States, the term riots was coined by some to describe the massive amount of lootings that took place across the streets of major U.S. cities that night. What is the role of a high-trust society when it comes to dealing with large scale crime?

00:00:30.000 We'll be right back.
00:00:59.980 And in question, turned out to be a knife.
00:01:02.920 A swarm of criminals used the dismissal as a pretext to smash and loot Apple, Foot Locker,
00:01:08.480 and Lululemon stores along with many other businesses during the two nights of unrest.
00:01:13.640 A social media influencer known as Meatball live-streamed the riots on Instagram as she
00:01:18.800 encouraged looters to steal iPhones in the name of racial justice.
00:01:22.440 While over 50 arrests were made during the Philadelphia crime spree, most looters will face few if any consequences for their actions.
00:01:30.700 This kind of violence and theft has become a regular feature of life in American cities, and major retailers are responding by closing stores and fleeing to safer areas.
00:01:41.080 Municipal governments are increasingly unable to maintain order due to highly racialized politics, and this failure will bring about the end of our high-trust society.
00:01:49.580 Civilization is a funny thing.
00:01:52.520 When social cooperation is high and everything is working properly, the people of a nation barely take notice.
00:01:58.740 But when the interdependent structures that allow for seamless operations start to fall apart, it suddenly becomes clear what was taken for granted.
00:02:05.760 In a high-trust society, valuable items can sit openly on store shelves because shoppers can be expected to retrieve the item and pay for it at the counter.
00:02:15.100 Shopping carts can be left outside a storefront because customers can be trusted to return them instead of leaving them strewn through the parking lot or stealing the carts at the first opportunity.
00:02:25.060 Public transit can make movement throughout the city effortless because citizens can be trusted to keep the cars clean, stand in orderly lines, and not hop the turnstile for a free ride.
00:02:34.740 A high-trust society can operate with remarkable efficiency because the population enforces the rules on themselves.
00:02:43.400 No ugly and intrusive security measures are needed.
00:02:46.820 No superfluous and silly safety devices are required because the common social custom and expectation of the people create a guard against delinquent behavior that is far more effective than any draconian top-down enforcement.
00:03:01.080 What's better than a well-marbled ribeye sizzling on the barbecue?
00:03:04.740 A well-marbled ribeye sizzling on the barbecue that was carefully selected by an Instacart shopper and delivered to your door.
00:03:11.560 A well-marbled ribeye you ordered without even leaving the kiddie pool.
00:03:16.040 Whatever groceries your summer calls for, Instacart has you covered.
00:03:20.180 Download the Instacart app and enjoy $0 delivery fees on your first three orders.
00:03:25.060 Service fees, exclusions, and terms apply.
00:03:27.740 Instacart.
00:03:28.660 Groceries that over-deliver.
00:03:30.240 When the social norms that allow for day-to-day cooperation break down, life becomes inconvenient in little ways at first.
00:03:39.020 But if the slide is not arrested, eventually the entire system falls apart.
00:03:44.100 Stores begin by placing small anti-theft tags on items that are frequently stolen.
00:03:48.900 But as shoplifting escalates, those items are placed in cases that must be manually unlocked by employees.
00:03:56.420 Videos now frequently appear on social media displaying stores in major cities where almost every single item,
00:04:03.420 even inexpensive products like mustard and toothpaste, must be held in a locked case due to the extreme amount of shoplifting.
00:04:11.160 Some grocery stores in San Francisco, where shoplifting has been de facto legalized,
00:04:17.340 have resorted to running large iron chains through the doors of their freezers to stop homeless drug users from emptying them.
00:04:24.960 Of course, none of these cumbersome security features really stop large-scale theft when rioting and looting occur.
00:04:31.460 Vladimir Putin called the U.S. dollar's drop in dominance objective and irreversible during the recent BRICS summit in South Africa,
00:04:40.280 as Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa formally agreed to use local currencies instead of the U.S. dollar.
00:04:48.480 It's the first shoe to fall.
00:04:50.060 As demand for the dollar weakens, the buying power of the dollar weakens.
00:04:53.440 And that's why Birch Gold Group is busier than ever.
00:04:55.860 However, investors and savers are looking to harness the power of physical gold held in a tax-sheltered IRA.
00:05:02.400 Text ORIN to 989898 for your free info kit on gold.
00:05:07.640 With thousands of happy customers, an A-plus rating with the Better Business Bureau, and countless five-star reviews,
00:05:14.080 you can count on Birch Gold to help you navigate transitioning an existing IRA or 401k into an IRA in gold.
00:05:21.840 As the U.S. dollar continues to receive pressure from foreign countries, digital currency, and central banks,
00:05:28.260 arm yourself with information on how to protect your savings.

00:05:38.140 The impact on the local population in these areas is obvious.
00:05:42.240 In addition to the physical danger, shopping in these areas becomes increasingly inconvenient and time-consuming
00:05:49.760 as employees must unlock each item the customer intends to purchase.
00:05:54.980 The employee and the customer begin to ask themselves if they're suckers for putting in a hard day's work
00:06:00.880 and abiding by the law, why criminals routinely steal whatever they can with little consequence.
00:06:06.060 Eventually, major companies realize there's simply no way to operate at a profit
00:06:12.140 or provide a safe environment for their customers and staff, and they shut down operations.
00:06:18.160 In recent months, CVS, one of the chain's hardest hit by the increase in crime,
00:06:23.320 has announced plans to close over 900 stores by 2024 as part of a strategy to curtail losses due to shoplifting.
00:06:31.000 Its rival Walgreens plans to close 150 stores,
00:06:35.540 and Target has announced that it will close several stores in major American cities due to violence and theft.
00:06:42.140 One of the left's favorite talking points is the food deserts created by the flight of major retailers
00:06:47.700 from these dangerous and unprofitable areas.
00:06:51.160 When the major businesses leave, only smaller discount stores filled with junk food, alcohol, and cigarettes
00:06:57.480 are willing to take the risk of servicing the community.
00:07:01.000 Progressives love to blame this phenomenon on racism or capitalist greed,
00:07:05.980 but the truth is that this situation was manufactured through the policies of the very same political actors
00:07:11.480 who complain about the inevitable consequences of their own policies.
00:07:15.860 Crime is a part of the human condition.
00:07:18.420 It will always be with us to some degree.
00:07:21.020 But reliable solutions for reducing its severity are well known.
00:07:24.840 When small violations of the law are allowed to go unpunished,
00:07:29.480 criminals are emboldened, and they escalate their behavior.
00:07:33.700 Average people who would naturally abide by the law see criminals prosper without consequence
00:07:38.740 and realize that it's foolish to follow the rules.
00:07:42.820 Broken windows policing was not some new revolution in law enforcement.
00:07:47.280 It's the rediscovery of one of the most basic truths of human organization.
00:07:52.260 A population will mostly self-regulate if order is the norm,
00:07:57.100 but the more that delinquency is excused or rewarded,
00:08:00.260 the faster things will spiral out of control.
00:08:03.560 At a cookout a few months ago, I heard a story from a local police officer
00:08:07.960 that I have now seen play out over and over again in American cities.
00:08:12.340 The young cops said that after the BLM riots of 2020,
00:08:17.340 the order came down to basically avoid interaction with minority communities at all costs.
00:08:24.140 Even the most routine traffic stop in one of these neighborhoods could escalate unexpectedly,
00:08:29.620 and with the incredible bias of the press and the viral nature of social media,
00:08:33.960 an officer could have his career ended in the blink of an eye.
00:08:37.540 Better to avoid possible lawsuits and violent riots
00:08:41.140 by simply ignoring the call when it came over the radio.
00:08:45.560 Again, law-abiding people in these neighborhoods suffer the direct consequences
00:08:49.680 as they are the most likely victims of these unpoliced crimes,
00:08:53.880 but unfortunately narratives of racial victimhood
00:08:56.400 have reliably proven more powerful than the observable deterioration in these communities.
00:09:02.140 This lack of will to prevent crime is not simply due to racial tensions.
00:09:06.820 Retailers often have a general policy of not stopping or prosecuting shoplifters
00:09:12.860 because the lawsuits and bad press that result if something goes wrong
00:09:16.680 is more costly than the stolen merchandise.
00:09:20.020 In many cases, progressive communities believe that they are actually saving the less fortunate
00:09:25.660 by removing criminal penalties.
00:09:27.360 In San Francisco, shoplifting is not technically legal,
00:09:31.860 but any theft under $950 has been downgraded to a level of misdemeanor so insignificant
00:09:37.740 that it does not automatically trigger a police investigation.
00:09:42.040 This means that drug addicts can walk in,
00:09:45.200 steal just under $1,000 of merchandise to fund their habit,
00:09:49.000 and walk out without worrying about being apprehended.
00:09:51.580 The solution that many corporations have seized on
00:09:55.340 is having an entirely online delivery model to service neighborhoods
00:09:59.460 that have become too dangerous for physical retailers.
00:10:03.020 This sounds promising at first.
00:10:05.500 Shoplifters and looters can't take products off their shelves if there's no shelves,
00:10:09.920 but few have thought this through.
00:10:12.420 If a neighborhood has become so dangerous that a grocery store can't safely operate,
00:10:17.080 then why would delivery trucks full of valuable merchandise
00:10:20.420 be allowed to traverse the same streets unmolested?
00:10:24.460 The problem has not been solved.
00:10:26.360 We're simply creating the 2023 equivalent of Wild West train robberies.
00:10:31.140 The refusal to police crime has a terrible impact on communities,
00:10:35.340 but its worst aspect is the generational damage that it causes.
00:10:39.920 Children grow up with metal detectors in their schools,
00:10:43.180 bars on every window,
00:10:44.360 and every item at the store locked behind glass.
00:10:48.380 This has a deep impact and changes the social expectations of an entire generation.
00:10:54.720 High-trust societies crumble and fall away
00:10:57.200 as the shared commitment to community operation
00:10:59.880 is replaced with a steal-it-before-someone-else-burns-it-down ethic.
00:11:04.700 As long as law enforcement, community leaders, and corporations
00:11:08.640 are more worried about performative social justice
00:11:11.620 than the safety and prosperity of the people they serve,
00:11:14.900 there'll be no end to the looting.
00:11:17.300 A society that can't find the will to protect itself from crime
00:11:21.100 inevitably slides into third-world conditions.
