00:00:00.000 for most of human history scarcity was the enemy be it territory land wealth calories or energy

00:00:14.280 the majority of conflict and technological innovation was driven by the fact that resources

00:00:18.940 were scarce with the incredible explosion in scientific knowledge and technological advancement

00:00:24.740 over the last few hundred years the dynamic has shifted scarcity hasn't vanished across the globe

00:00:30.440 by any stretch of the imagination but in wealthier and more advanced portions of the world many of the

00:00:36.280 critical material deficiencies have seen significant relief the problem that many affluent nations now

00:00:42.980 face is that the artificial solutions they developed to alleviate scarcity have proven to be just as if

00:00:49.260 not more dangerous than scarcity itself for most of our history humans have been selected for their

00:00:55.760 ability to alleviate or survive scarcity now they're being selected for their ability to survive the

00:01:02.120 dangers of an artificial abundance entire civilizations have risen to prominence or been completely destroyed

00:01:10.160 based on their ability to provide consistent calorie counts food was hard to produce whether our pests

00:01:16.760 could wipe out entire harvests and preserving consumable calories for the long term was difficult

00:01:22.460 most of the population was employed in the production of their own food supply and yet famine regularly

00:01:29.620 devastated entire civilizations in first world countries today factory farming improved logistics and 0.61

00:01:36.920 advancements in creating artificial foodstuffs allow for the instant availability of calories a single trip to

00:01:44.820 mcdonald's or the junk food aisle at walmart can produce an entire week's worth of calories for just a few

00:01:50.320 dollars calories are now so available that obesity not hunger is the largest threat to the well-being of

00:01:57.120 the poor the artificial flavors and empty fillers and processed food can simulate the necessary calories

00:02:03.900 derived from real food but constantly meeting those basic needs with this modern creation slowly poisons the

00:02:11.320 consumer's body a similar struggle can be seen in the modern proliferation of pornography and video games among young

00:02:18.260 men along with hunger sex is one of the most basic elements of human desire and entire civilizations have been

00:02:24.620 created and destroyed by sex drive historically the need to fulfill sexual desire drove men to elevate their status

00:02:32.400 win wars accumulate wealth and achieve other great deeds now men can simulate the achievement of great deeds and fulfill their

00:02:41.120 sexual appetite digitally there's no need to venture into the world or brave the dangers of the dating market because

00:02:47.780 those impulses can be masturbated satisfied without engaging in the real and consequential behavior

00:02:53.980 as a result young men are trapped in an eternal adolescence temporarily satisfied into compliance with a corrupt system but

00:03:02.220 never threatening it with their full potential social media and online dating have a similar impact on women

00:03:09.880 both technologies have a negative impact on society at large but they hit young women the hardest

00:03:15.540 women crave community they want to be seen and validated social media allows women to delude themselves 0.99

00:03:22.420 into believing that they are building meaningful bonds and friendships without having to deal with the real

00:03:27.900 work that would be involved in serving a family community or group of friends social media also combines with

00:03:34.660 online dating to give women the illusion of male attention distorting their expectations for healthy

00:03:40.640 relationships in reality social media is responsible for driving up rates of female depression by opening an 0.99

00:03:47.680 avenue of constant and inescapable criticism women lose their traditional roles as social facilitators and 0.99

00:03:55.360 builders of community from which much of their identity historically arose they also become increasingly

00:04:01.480 uncomfortable with male attention in real life while craving it online where it's considered safe and

00:04:07.500 controllable this leads to a broken and hypergamous dating market where men find approaching women in 0.64

00:04:13.580 real life impossible while women wait online for the attention of the perfect man that's just never coming 1.00

00:04:19.820 covid showed us the true danger of attempting to simulate every aspect of human experience during the lockdown

00:04:27.100 social interactions from school church work and even bonding with friends over a meal became impossible

00:04:34.060 when does fast grocery delivery through instacart matter most when your famous grainy mustard potato

00:04:40.220 salad isn't so famous without the grainy mustard when the barbecue's lit but there's nothing to grill

00:04:45.500 when the in-laws decide that actually they will stay for dinner instacart has all your groceries covered

00:04:51.320 this summer so download the app and get delivery in as fast as 60 minutes plus enjoy zero dollar

00:04:56.960 delivery fees on your first three orders service fees exclusions and terms apply instacart groceries that

00:05:03.360 over deliver the average person was encouraged to instead attempt to simulate all these experiences

00:05:10.480 online with disastrous results depression skyrocketed childhood development was severely impacted and education

00:05:18.640 became a joke the attempt to replace all of these fundamental human experiences with simulated alternatives

00:05:25.680 that were safer and easier for the ruling class to control turned out to be a disaster the worst part

00:05:32.080 is that while the experiences were inferior in every way many people still practice them because they are easier

00:05:38.400 than engaging in the real thing there are individuals who will be damaged for the rest of their lives

00:05:44.240 because they were given the opportunity to live life as a fully artificial existence reality is hard living a life of

00:05:53.280 community and human interaction well it can be unpleasant demanding and even dangerous the only reason most people

00:05:59.680 ever got off the couch is that there was no alternative to fulfilling their basic desires but now there are

00:06:05.920 infinite alternatives to simulate almost every human need when given the option most people will choose

00:06:12.640 comfort and ease over the difficult but meaningful this is why we must think carefully as a society about the alternatives

00:06:20.880 to reality that we offer or promote the philosopher Jean Baudrillard developed the idea of the simulacra as a copy that

00:06:29.440 represents something that no longer has an original in the modern world we have replaced the fulfillment of basic desires that

00:06:37.280 defined our lives with copies of copies that have no connection to the original experience the cheeseburger with so many artificial

00:06:46.480 ingredients that it fills your belly but has none of the nutrients provided by real food the ai online

00:06:53.040 companion combating loneliness but ensuring that you never leave the house looking for community

00:06:59.280 the porn star who looks and behaves nothing like a real woman the online male attention that destroys the 0.84

00:07:05.360 ability of a woman to date a real man the simulated combat of a video game that keeps you from achieving anything of

00:07:12.480 a real substance in your free time we're passing through an evolutionary bottleneck as real as the

00:07:18.480 one that's selected for stronger more resilient and more intelligent human beings in the past the new 0.98

00:07:24.880 selection criteria is the ability to reject the simulacrum can you say no to masturbating your sexual 0.68

00:07:32.160 desires your hunger your desire for community your drive for greatness those that make it to the other side

00:07:38.880 will choose austerity in the face of abundance it will be those that can value the real over the

00:07:44.480 simulacra that will find meaning and avoid the incoming wave of nihilism artificial intelligence will

00:07:51.360 only increase the categories of desire which can be simulated but those that survive will be those that are

00:07:57.840 unsatisfied we must choose reality and meaning over comfort and ease we must teach our children to do the same

00:08:08.560 the same thing that we must teach our children to do the same thing that we must teach our children to

00:08:12.960 the same thing that we must teach our children to do the same thing that we must teach our children
