Summary

Every generation, the radical acceleration of the left forces it to shed a certain percentage of liberals who are not willing to adopt the newest progressive dogma. And due to the binary nature of the American political landscape, those individuals inevitably find themselves identified with the conservative movement. The discarded revolutionaries are often bewildered by their sudden ejection from the movement they identified with for most their lives and are slow to embrace their new allies.

00:00:30.000 I didn't leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me.
00:00:34.500 Ronald Reagan's famous turn of phrase has been adopted by many who find themselves suddenly
00:00:39.220 and inexplicably identified as right-wing.
00:00:42.300 We like to think that the current explosion of wokeness that has forced many moderate liberals
00:00:46.800 out of the Democratic Party is a unique phenomenon, but nothing could be farther from the truth.
00:00:52.160 Every generation, the radical acceleration of the left forces it to shed a certain percentage
00:00:57.260 of liberals who are not willing to adopt the newest progressive dogma.
00:01:01.060 And due to the binary nature of the American political landscape, those individuals inevitably
00:01:06.220 find themselves identified with the conservative movement.
00:01:09.780 The discarded revolutionaries are often bewildered by their sudden ejection from the movement
00:01:14.700 they identified with for most of their lives, and are slow to embrace their new allies.
00:01:20.380 Despite their initial hesitance, the newly minted conservatives are often thrust to positions
00:01:25.340 of power and notoriety in the movement, which is subsequently altered by the residual left-wing
00:01:30.760 views of its new leaders.
00:01:32.100 This neoconservative cycle is one of the key reasons why the American conservative movement
00:01:37.740 finds itself slowly but inevitably moving to the left.
00:01:42.340 Republican leadership is consistently out of step with the positions of its voting base.
00:01:47.660 Conservative politicians, pundits, and thought leaders now hold social positions that are
00:01:52.540 radically to the left of moderate Democrats in the 1990s.
00:01:56.020 In 2008, both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton publicly confirmed their belief that marriage
00:02:02.620 is between a man and a woman.
00:02:04.580 But in 2022, 12 GOP senators crossed the aisle to pass a bill redefining marriage.
00:02:11.320 Utah Governor Spencer Cox, the current Republican leader of one of the most conservative states
00:02:16.720 in the nation, regularly announces his pronouns before speeches and vigorously supports the progressive
00:02:23.200 narrative of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
00:02:26.400 I've previously written and made videos about a number of political ratchets that assured the
00:02:31.800 consistent leftward drift of American politics, but one of the most powerful is the mechanism
00:02:37.600 that places disaffected progressives in key positions of leadership inside the conservative movement.
00:02:44.700 Without addressing this failure of gatekeeping, there's very little chance that the right will
00:02:49.500 ever conserve anything of value.
00:02:51.880 Every revolution eats its own, and this is a very evident fact on the left.
00:02:57.680 Because progressivism is about the deconstruction of civilization and the institutions that support
00:03:03.400 it, someone is always being left behind.
00:03:06.560 Feminists loved the revolution as it deconstructed gender roles and emancipated women from traditional
00:03:12.620 bonds, but suddenly found themselves labeled bigots if they questioned the redefinition of the
00:03:19.280 word woman.
00:03:21.080 There's now an entire category hated by the left called TERFs, these trans-exclusionary feminists.
00:03:28.400 Even someone like Harry Potter author JK Rowling, who's rich and famous and was previously very
00:03:35.260 popular with the progressive movement, willing even to go back and retroactively edit the narrative
00:03:42.080 of her own books in order to insert diversity and alternative lifestyles into beloved children's
00:03:48.620 novels, can be canceled from her own work.
00:03:51.600 She's basically been erased as the author of her own series.
00:03:55.920 She isn't invited to any of the celebrations or events based around her own books that inspired
00:04:02.080 a massive movie franchise simply because she's not willing to go along with the newest step
00:04:08.240 of redefining the term woman.
00:04:10.700 Likewise, many atheists were happy to cheer the left as it stripped God from the public square,
00:04:16.500 but were later shocked when universities started firing professors for doing research or holding
00:04:22.140 political positions that violated the new religion that had taken place of the old one.
00:04:27.420 These former revolutionaries found themselves in the classic neoconservative position, standing
00:04:33.820 athwart a movement they once led and begging it to stop now that it had reached something
00:04:38.460 they held sacred.
00:04:39.620 But the revolution stops for no one, and these once trendy and virtuous individuals suddenly
00:04:46.940 found themselves cast down into the social status abyss of red America.
00:04:52.800 When the freshly minted batch of neocons arrive on the right, they're generally surprised to
00:04:58.260 find out that it's not that bad.
00:05:00.620 The people are nice, welcoming, and genuinely excited to see someone from the left realize how
00:05:05.800 insane things have gotten over there.
00:05:07.700 The former revolutionaries are still hesitant to identify as conservatives because conservatives
00:05:14.040 still have very backward and dangerous ideas, but they do start to believe that if they could
00:05:19.300 just reform the right, there could be a home for the now-moderate liberals of this next generation.
00:05:25.880 The key thing to remember is that most of these discarded revolutionaries don't think
00:05:30.480 they did anything wrong.
00:05:31.880 The neoconservatives believed that they were correct to support the progressive movement up
00:05:36.680 until the point where they were dismissed from it.
00:05:39.360 They don't understand that the values they supported would always inevitably lead to the
00:05:44.140 attack on what they held sacred.
00:05:46.280 There is no repentance because there's nothing to repent of.
00:05:50.200 So instead, the neoconservatives seek to reconstruct their older version of the same movement they
00:05:55.700 were just ejected from by pulling their new conservative allies to the left.
00:06:00.380 What's better than a well-marbled ribeye sizzling on the barbecue?
00:06:04.900 A well-marbled ribeye sizzling on the barbecue that was carefully selected by an Instacart
00:06:09.640 shopper and delivered to your door.
00:06:11.640 A well-marbled ribeye you ordered without even leaving the kiddie pool.
00:06:16.120 Whatever groceries your summer calls for, Instacart has you covered.
00:06:20.260 Download the Instacart app and enjoy $0 delivery fees on your first three orders.
00:06:25.120 Service fees, exclusions, and terms apply.
00:06:27.300 The right tends to follow neoconservative leadership for a very simple reason.
00:06:36.020 In America, progressive credentials determine social and moral standing.
00:06:40.600 Those with the skills for modern technocratic and media-driven leadership tend to acquire
00:06:45.580 them from institutions that transmit progressive values.
00:06:49.600 Those who have most recently fallen from grace are also closest to the progressive zeitgeist
00:06:55.100 and therefore closer to power and prestige.
00:06:58.300 Whenever a high-status defector moves right, conservatives rush to appease their new ally
00:07:03.820 thinking the left have finally gone too far and sanity will soon be restored.
00:07:09.240 Conservatives can be quickly convinced to shift key elements of their worldview in the hope
00:07:14.460 that if they capture the disaffected center, the popular majority will swing their direction.
00:07:19.580 But that victory never comes and the right commits, issue by issue, to shift further and further
00:07:25.820 to the left in each iteration of the cycle.
00:07:29.480 The progressive opposition is more than happy to play its role in this process.
00:07:34.860 Nothing is more hated than a recent apostate.
00:07:38.280 Defectors are a threat to the revolution, no matter how moderate their objections might be,
00:07:43.520 and so an example must be made.
00:07:45.580 Every progressive must be shown what happens to those who betray the movement.
00:07:51.380 This public persecution only raises the profile of those attacked, making it increasingly likely
00:07:57.020 that they will be seen as important and worthy of elevation on the right.
00:08:01.400 Anyone treated as this dangerous by the progressives must be saying something very important, right?
00:08:07.220 This all-out attack on recent defectors also has the very valuable effect of anchoring the
00:08:12.760 rightmost edge of the Overton window.
00:08:15.580 Donald Trump is, by all reasonable measures, a blue-dog Democrat.
00:08:20.020 He's socially progressive on some issues, but not totally radical, and he has the protectionist
00:08:25.160 and immigration positions of moderate leftists from a few decades ago.
00:08:29.240 Now, to be clear, this is not an attack on Trump.
00:08:32.040 Sadly, a blue-dog Democrat is to the right of most of the GOP today, but it is the truth.
00:08:37.220 There's just nothing radical about Trump's positions.
00:08:39.480 The media, however, are willing to shriek relentlessly about how Trump is the most radical authoritarian
00:08:45.720 reactionary ever to win office.
00:08:48.100 They declare him the second coming of mid-century German leader on a daily basis.
00:08:52.760 Conservatives, understandably, defend him passionately because they see the fervent vitriol of these
00:08:58.740 heinous attacks, but they also onboard the framing.
00:09:01.760 Trump has now been successfully redefined as the rightmost edge of political discourse,
00:09:08.280 and anything beyond must, by definition, be unacceptable.
00:09:11.800 This is how a moderate Democrat from the 2000s becomes the most radical conservative in 2023.
00:09:20.180 Unless conservatism can define itself, it will always be, as author Michael Malice has famously
00:09:26.440 labeled it, progressivism going the speed limit.
00:09:29.520 It will always be the trailing edge of the left-wing revolution that drives American politics.
00:09:35.380 The right cannot exist simply in opposition to the left, and frankly, it cannot see itself
00:09:41.540 as strictly conserving a culture it failed to defend long ago.
00:09:46.380 Conservatives must first understand what they are fighting for and offer a better version
00:09:51.240 of the future to those they seek to lead.
00:09:53.940 That shouldn't be too hard.
00:09:55.940 The future the left offers now is rather ugly, but it means that the time of purely reacting
00:10:01.780 to the left is over.
00:10:03.240 The right can't simply accept the cast-off leadership class and ideology of the left
00:10:08.780 from 20 years ago and call it a movement.
00:10:11.560 It must be something more.
