00:00:30.000 As the culture war rages, conservatives rush from issue to issue, chasing whatever the

00:00:43.160 media dangles in front of them.

00:00:45.460 Each time, they come armed with facts and logic, well-constructed arguments designed to do battle

00:00:50.640 in the marketplace of ideas, and yet Republicans continue to lose.

00:00:55.000 The mainstream right has fully embraced the idea that in a democracy,

00:00:59.280 political battles are about making the most logical case to win over the majority,

00:01:04.240 but this is a terrible way to understand political loyalty.

00:01:07.880 In a democracy, people lend their political support to those who would deliver benefits

00:01:12.360 to themselves and their communities.

00:01:14.320 Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of true believers on the left, but the reason they

00:01:19.520 are so deeply invested in progressive ideology is that it delivers the goods.

00:01:24.780 The political contest in the United States is asymmetrical for several reasons, but one

00:01:30.280 of the most glaring is the way both sides approach the idea of patronage.

00:01:35.240 Patronage is the most ancient and powerful bond of political organization.

00:01:40.660 The patron provides protection, material rewards, and access to the client base, and the clients

00:01:47.220 provide loyalty and support to their political patron.

00:01:50.520 The left embraces this model and is proud of its ability to deliver for its clients.

00:01:56.460 The right rejects this model as a violation of its principles, and thereby denies itself

00:02:01.680 one of the most powerful tools with which to build power.

00:02:05.360 When progressives identify another front in the civil rights revolution, they don't just

00:02:10.460 see an opportunity to exploit identity and advance ideology, they see an opportunity to profit.

00:02:16.300 From the redefinition of marriage to the redefinition of woman, each battle requires massive amounts 0.94

00:02:23.360 of funding. New infrastructure is created as universities open academic departments dedicated

00:02:29.560 to studying the latest ideology, and NGOs are founded to employ the latest crop of activists.

00:02:36.560 Media campaigns are launched, concerts are held, movies are made, and foundations generate

00:02:42.200 research to bolster awareness about the latest progressive crusade.

00:02:47.340 Yes, there is a religious fervor in the advancement of progressive ideology, but behind that wave of

00:02:53.720 revolutionary zeal is a network of activists and academics that are cashing checks.

00:03:00.200 These clients owe their status and income to the progressive machine, which is why they will

00:03:05.880 lie down in traffic, or more often attack opponents in traffic, for the cause.

00:03:12.040 Benefits of the patronage model reach far beyond the activist class.

00:03:16.940 The left has established a vast network through its capture of most public institutions,

00:03:22.020 of which the most powerful is arguably the education system.

00:03:26.640 Teachers unions understand that the left keeps its leaders in power and its members employed.

00:03:32.160 Due to this direct infusion of power and cash, unions are motivated to ensure that their members

00:03:39.360 stay ideologically aligned. Public education is completely dominated by leftist radicals and

00:03:46.380 progressive doctrines. Few conservatives can obtain a degree from a college of education while

00:03:52.500 expressing their views, and any who manage to do so know that one ideological misstep in the

00:03:58.120 classroom will mean the end of their career. As a result, leftist propaganda is present in almost

00:04:04.140 everything a student hears, sees, and reads in class. Students are graded and promoted on their

00:04:11.900 ability to reliably repeat progressive narratives. The left's investment in patronage ensures them the

00:04:19.340 loyalty, not just of one generation of teachers, but of most students who will pass through the public

00:04:25.820 education system itself.

00:04:43.260 Government employees have an obvious incentive to seek the expansion of government power and bureaucracy.

00:04:48.900 With the growth of government comes an increase in jobs, benefits, and status for public employees.

00:04:56.600 An ideological commitment to government expansion allows the left to win the loyalty of most public

00:05:01.980 sector employees, and politically motivated hiring follows, ensuring that those who make critical

00:05:07.840 decisions inside of the federal bureaucracy are progressive loyalists. Key agencies like the State

00:05:14.780 Department, FBI, and CIA become staffed by individuals who owe their status and livelihood to the Democratic

00:05:22.000 Party. And it's this political patronage that builds the left's monolithic control of the deep

00:05:28.860 state. While the influence of political patronage is easy to see in the public sector, its influence is

00:05:36.180 felt deeply in private corporations as well. Alright guys, so there's a new movie coming out that I think

00:05:41.780 you're gonna really want to see. I was lucky enough to see a special sneak preview. It's called

00:05:46.760 Nefarious. The best thing is that it's based on a book by the Blaze's very own Steve Dace. And Steve

00:05:53.200 is really passionate about it. He was kind enough to have me come to an advanced screening. I'm sure

00:05:58.660 you've seen the posters or maybe even the trailer, and it all looks great. It's kind of in between a

00:06:03.280 horror movie and a psychological thriller. It's very much in the vein of C.S. Lewis. You know the book

00:06:09.080 The Screwtape Letters, of course. Steve calls it interview with a demon. A psychiatrist is called

00:06:15.280 to a prison, and he has to meet with a convicted killer who's about to be executed. The killer claims

00:06:21.080 that he's a demon named Nefarious. And of course, the psychologist, he's an atheist. He doesn't believe

00:06:26.020 any of the supernatural stuff. But he's got to decide, you know, is this guy insane? Is he pretending

00:06:31.280 to be insane? Can he be executed for his heinous crimes? Obviously, I'm not going to give anything 0.99

00:06:37.060 away, but let's just say that the psychiatrist is in way over his head. It's a supernatural thriller

00:06:42.640 that's perfect for your friends who love scary movies, but also has a really important message.

00:06:47.740 It's the kind of movie that you'll be thinking about long after you get out of the theater.

00:06:52.100 Nefarious opens nationwide the weekend of April 14th. So make sure to mark the date and get your

00:06:58.160 tickets now at whoisnefarious.com. That's whoisnefarious.com.

00:07:04.420 The left has been so effective in the realm of law and culture that it's illegal to offend

00:07:10.720 leftists. Corporations spend billions of dollars in compliance costs to avoid legal action when it

00:07:17.860 comes to discrimination or the creation of a hostile workplace. And it is, of course, progressives

00:07:23.480 who create the ever-shifting definition of what constitutes discrimination or a hostile workplace.

00:07:29.360 This means that leftist political commissars, also known as human resource departments,

00:07:35.660 are a legal requirement for all major corporations. Armies of progressive activists are employed by

00:07:42.560 corporations to monitor every interaction between employees and purge wrongthink from their staff.

00:07:49.580 Those HR departments deliver mandatory re-education to all employees, ensuring that the latest progressive

00:07:56.740 dogma is memorized and repeated back to them by anyone who wants to keep his job.

00:08:02.540 Again, these jobs and the status that they grant are complete creations of the leftist patronage

00:08:08.740 machine. And every corporate HR director knows this. Their bond of loyalty to the Democratic Party

00:08:15.180 and its ideology couldn't be stronger.

00:08:17.440 In order to defeat wokeness, the right must understand not just its ideological origins or

00:08:23.940 popular arguments, but its material incentives. Most people aren't simply cynical actors adopting

00:08:30.520 ideology for a paycheck, but they will naturally invest in the system on which they depend for

00:08:36.840 status and employment. Everyone needs to pay the mortgage and feel important. If woke ideology

00:08:43.060 remains the best way to climb the social hierarchy while landing a paycheck, people will pledge their

00:08:48.740 loyalty without worrying about logical contradictions. Facts might not care about your feelings,

00:08:55.140 but in a democracy, facts lose to feelings and cold hard cash every time. In a democracy,

00:09:02.960 vote buying is the best strategy, but it's usually illegal, so proxies are created through make-work

00:09:08.560 jobs and government benefits. Many on the right will be offended by this truth, but it remains

00:09:14.600 the truth nonetheless, and any group of political actors who ignore that truth do so at their own

00:09:21.180 peril. The classic conservative response to this truth has been to limit the size and scope of

00:09:27.340 government. If the government doesn't have jobs or cash to hand out, then the left can't use those

00:09:32.820 resources to gain power. This makes sense in theory, but in practice it's been a disaster. Despite

00:09:40.140 conservative efforts, government has exploded in size, and its influence over American life

00:09:45.760 is enormous. Even if government can be curtailed, the progressive patronage network has expanded well

00:09:53.100 beyond the bounds of its original host, and wokeness is now firmly implanted in private corporations

00:09:59.040 and the NGO complex. Containment has been an unsuccessful strategy, and the right must

00:10:05.520 acknowledge the political reality of patronage if it wishes to survive. Creating a competing patronage

00:10:12.600 network won't be easy. While Democrats eagerly redistribute funds to their base, conservatives

00:10:18.400 have been told that their ideology only allows tax dollars to go to arms manufacturers and bank

00:10:24.020 bailouts. While reducing the power and funds available to our current regime would be ideal,

00:10:30.600 it's not a long-term strategy for building and maintaining our own patronage network.

00:10:35.760 Mainstream conservatives are already good at funding some institutions, like think tanks,

00:10:40.780 but they must expand their ambitions and take on more substantive endeavors.

00:10:45.140 The efforts of individuals like Corey DeAngelis and Chris Ruffo to decouple our educational spending

00:10:51.320 from the progressive patronage network is a good start. If that funding can be redirected into a

00:10:57.420 network of schools that are committed to an explicitly conservative worldview, it would strip the

00:11:02.860 left of one of its greatest weapons while creating a blueprint for how patronage could work on the

00:11:07.880 right. Progressives spent many decades creating and expanding their patronage network, and it won't be

00:11:14.340 undone in one fell swoop. But if the right is to succeed, it must understand the inescapable power

00:11:21.020 of political patronage.
