Summary

What is the real purpose of our major institutions? What are their real goals? And why do they fail so badly at it? Is it because our elites have a disastrous vision for the future of the world? Or is it because they don t understand the real goals of their own elites?

00:00:30.620 One of the key faults of conservative political analysis has been its focus on stated goals
00:00:35.420 instead of true purpose revealed through actions.
00:00:38.600 Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, recently declared on Twitter,
00:00:43.100 mass migration has failed.
00:00:45.000 Oh no, my friend, I quickly replied.
00:00:47.080 It has succeeded at its actual goal.
00:00:50.100 Kirk is correct that mass migration has been a disaster for citizens of the countries that
00:00:55.100 have implemented it.
00:00:56.260 Crime has increased.
00:00:57.660 Real wages have fallen or stagnated, housing prices have skyrocketed, and social cohesion
00:01:03.180 has collapsed.
00:01:05.080 The promise that these populations would assimilate while increasing economic prosperity and solving
00:01:10.840 a demographic crisis rings hollow.
00:01:12.980 But this was never the real purpose of mass migration, and attempting to judge success
00:01:18.400 or failure by the stated goal of the policy is a mistake.
00:01:22.820 The interests of the ruling class in the West have radically diverged from the people of those nations,
00:01:28.360 and this means it's far more useful to understand the real goals of our elites
00:01:32.580 than it is to listen to their hollow words.
00:01:35.100 Americans have been taught that we live in an enlightened age of reason.
00:01:39.980 Conservatives believe that everyone in America has the general well-being of the nation in mind,
00:01:45.560 so facts, statistics, and logical argumentation in the marketplace of ideas will produce the best result
00:01:51.420 through the democratic process.
00:01:53.300 It should be obvious at this point that that's not the case.
00:01:56.400 While conservatives make arguments hoping to sway popular opinion,
00:02:00.460 the left takes control of the institutions that actually manufacture that opinion
00:02:03.920 and implement policies that will permanently transform the nation
00:02:07.400 in a way that generates an electoral advantage in perpetuity.
00:02:11.140 As long as conservatives debate instead of act,
00:02:14.620 the borders stay open and mass migration continues.
00:02:17.860 The stated goal of mass migration was always asinine,
00:02:21.120 but that hardly matters,
00:02:22.240 as long as the right is arguing with the stated goal instead of stopping the real purpose of the policy,
00:02:28.060 the left wins.
00:02:30.100 This disconnect between stated purpose and actual goal
00:02:33.580 can be observed in almost every institution in the United States.
00:02:38.360 Public education claims to be about helping students learn to read, write, do math, and think critically,
00:02:44.660 but our schools are objectively terrible at this.
00:02:47.880 What public schools are very good at doing
00:02:50.300 is inundating children with radical leftist ideology on topics like gender, race, and sexuality.
00:02:57.220 To be very clear, the schools haven't failed.
00:02:59.800 They've excelled at their true task.
00:03:02.340 Our elites care far more about someone doing a racism
00:03:05.440 than an entire generation failing to learn to read,
00:03:08.680 and those preferences are reflected in the focus of our education system.
00:03:12.740 The same can be seen in institutions like the United States military.
00:03:16.880 The purpose of any military since time began
00:03:19.860 is first and foremost the defense of its nation's borders.
00:03:23.940 Conquest or peacekeeping are nice,
00:03:26.240 but the most basic reason to organize a military in the first place
00:03:30.020 is to defend the nation from the people who are not supposed to cross into it.
00:03:34.480 Warhawk politicians from both parties
00:03:36.580 always seem to have a reason to keep the American military deployed,
00:03:40.120 but the one place the armed forces can never, ever protect
00:03:44.280 is the southern border of the United States.
00:03:47.480 Congress will funnel untold billions of dollars to defend the borders of Ukraine.
00:03:51.860 The president will deploy carrier groups to defend Israel,
00:03:54.880 but the invasion of the southern border continues.
00:03:58.180 Our ruling class could use the military to end the invasion of the country tomorrow,
00:04:03.140 but despite the stated purpose of the armed forces,
00:04:05.940 that is not their real goal.
00:04:07.380 Instead, money and personnel are directed to the real priorities.
00:04:12.860 If the stated goal and the true purpose of our major institutions have radically diverged,
00:04:18.260 then it's vital to learn what caused this split.
00:04:21.840 Institutions are central to the maintenance of any civilization
00:04:24.740 once it reaches a certain size.
00:04:27.140 The larger and more complex a society becomes,
00:04:29.680 the more it relies on institutions that can care for the needs of the people
00:04:33.520 and perpetuate their way of life.
00:04:35.240 Most of our institutions retain credibility
00:04:38.240 because they were founded explicitly with the purpose of protecting the populace
00:04:42.140 or improving their lives.
00:04:44.020 So why have they stopped doing that?
00:04:46.180 What we're observing is a problem of scaling civilization beyond its natural limits.
00:04:51.540 The global village is a disastrous vision for social organization.
00:04:56.060 So is importing the world into the United States
00:04:58.540 and expecting that public schools and television will transform everyone into a cohesive polity.
00:05:04.820 Ideology is nice in the abstract,
00:05:07.360 but the question of who acts is critical.
00:05:10.300 People who don't feel the weight of their decisions will become out of touch,
00:05:15.140 making lazy and poorly informed choices.
00:05:18.020 They're also very likely to take actions that benefit themselves
00:05:21.440 at the cost of the institutions they operate or the people they serve.
00:05:25.820 If you see the faces of the people you're supposed to work for every day,
00:05:29.400 if your family lives in the neighborhood you're supposed to protect,
00:05:32.660 you're far more likely to do your job well.
00:05:35.500 If instead the mission of your institution is something abstract,
00:05:39.380 serving a class of people you never interact with or neighborhoods you never see,
00:05:43.380 it's much easier to turn the power you wield inside that organization to your own benefit.
00:05:47.900 The disconnect between the actor and the person or group who actually bears the cost of the action
00:05:53.980 is called the principal-agent problem.
00:05:56.620 Anyone who has ever worked in a large bureaucratic organization
00:06:00.060 could recognize this phenomenon immediately.
00:06:03.640 The stated goal of a company may be serving the customer and making money,
00:06:08.220 but the different managers and functionaries in that organization
00:06:11.280 are far more interested in their own power and prestige.
00:06:14.100 This often leads them to make decisions on behalf of the company
00:06:18.800 that have nothing to do with customers or profit,
00:06:22.120 but only serve their personal needs or their faction inside that organization.
00:06:27.260 This can only occur because the company has become so large and complex
00:06:31.340 that a portion of its resources can be redirected to the abstract squabbles of managers
00:06:36.380 without collapsing the entire business.
00:06:38.420 America's founders understood this principle
00:06:42.160 and implemented federalism to mitigate some of the problems that scaling civilization represents.
00:06:48.540 By locating as many political decisions as close to the people that they impact as possible,
00:06:54.100 you reduce the chance that the agents will be completely unimpacted by the choices they make.
00:07:00.200 Politicians are less likely to bulldoze a community for profit
00:07:03.800 or let illegal aliens sleep in the streets if their kids play in that neighborhood.
00:07:09.380 But the war against federalism has been relentless.
00:07:12.360 The 10th Amendment has been dead for a long time,
00:07:15.160 and the phrase states' rights has become a punchline.
00:07:18.820 The U.S. government has exploded in size
00:07:21.260 and justified centralization at every opportunity.
00:07:24.760 Local governments and private institutions are held hostage
00:07:27.740 by centralized funding and bureaucratic regulation,
00:07:30.700 ensuring that real decisions are made in Washington, D.C., not in the heartland.
00:07:36.100 People often ask me how our elites became so unhinged
00:07:39.520 that they would risk killing the goose that lays the golden egg.
00:07:43.020 It's easy to see why bureaucrats would act in their own interests,
00:07:46.420 but why would they enact policies that are actively malicious?
00:07:50.140 Don't they realize that if they destroy the country as it is now,
00:07:53.580 they can no longer benefit from the resources that they're currently siphoning to themselves?
00:07:58.480 No, they don't.
00:08:00.700 You see, people, especially intelligent people who think all important knowledge
00:08:05.280 is contained in their field of expertise,
00:08:07.520 are terrible at understanding second- or third-order effects.
00:08:12.320 Bureaucrats sitting at the top of a system always think they understand how a system works,
00:08:17.480 even though they're very far away from crucial parts of the infrastructure
00:08:21.220 that are slowly eroding.
00:08:22.720 For someone designing woke educational policy or lax immigration law in Washington, D.C.,
00:08:29.540 the power has always come on.
00:08:31.840 Planes have always landed.
00:08:33.700 Groceries have always been delivered.
00:08:35.620 And they always will be.
00:08:37.300 So you've always been picky about your produce.
00:08:40.560 But now you find yourself checking every label to make sure it's Canadian.
00:08:44.720 So be it.
00:08:45.820 At Sobeys, we always pick guaranteed fresh Canadian produce first.
00:08:50.060 Restrictions apply.
00:08:51.020 See in-store or online for details.
00:08:52.760 The ruling class is free to pursue policies that serve only their ends
00:09:00.000 because the plebs have always kept the country running and they always will.
00:09:05.100 So what if they can't buy a home or have kids or dying deaths of despair?
00:09:10.520 The elites don't have to see any of that.
00:09:13.040 They don't have to live in flyover country.
00:09:15.460 Just replace the plebs with immigrants.
00:09:17.620 One drone is as good as the next, right?
00:09:21.800 Many would like to imagine a large cabal working to destroy the United States.
00:09:26.900 Don't misunderstand.
00:09:28.180 There are those who conspire against the nation.
00:09:31.200 But much of what is now happening can be attributed to the forces
00:09:34.480 that have mortally wounded most great empires throughout history.
00:09:38.560 We are ruled by increasingly inept, decadent, and out-of-touch elites
00:09:43.480 who have shielded themselves from the consequences of their decision-making
00:09:46.980 on behalf of the nation.
00:09:49.220 Our institutions have grown bloated and sclerotic,
00:09:52.140 far more interested in internal political struggles
00:09:54.560 than the populace they were designed to serve.
00:09:57.580 Until decisions are placed back in the hands of those who feel the sting of failure
00:10:01.980 and the thrill of success,
00:10:03.320 our institutions will continue to pursue their own perverse power
00:10:07.080 and ignore the well-being of the people.
