00:00:00.000 We hope you're enjoying your Air Canada flight.

00:00:02.320 Rocky's Vacation, here we come.

00:00:05.060 Whoa, is this economy?

00:00:07.180 Free beer, wine, and snacks.

00:00:09.620 Sweet! 0.95

00:00:10.720 Fast-free Wi-Fi means I can make dinner reservations before we land.

00:00:14.760 And with live TV, I'm not missing the game.

00:00:17.800 It's kind of like, I'm already on vacation.

00:00:20.980 Nice! 0.94

00:00:22.240 On behalf of Air Canada, nice travels.

00:00:25.260 Wi-Fi available to Airplane members on Equipped Flight.

00:00:27.200 Sponsored by Bell. Conditions apply.

00:00:28.720 CRCanada.com.

00:00:30.520 Every state is operated by an organized minority, a ruling class.

00:00:35.340 That class may rule by divine right, wealth, the authority granted to them by their birth,

00:00:40.240 or even in the name of the people.

00:00:41.900 But there will always be two groups, the rulers and the ruled.

00:00:46.120 Brutal warlords and dictators can rule through raw force for a time.

00:00:50.560 But that's a brittle power that can easily snap.

00:00:53.880 Eventually, every regime requires a political formula that grants their rule legitimacy in

00:00:58.700 the eyes of the public.

00:01:00.380 In America, and the wider Western world, elections are the only acceptable,

00:01:05.440 legitimating mechanism for state power.

00:01:07.920 And other political formulas are considered authoritarian.

00:01:10.840 Both major political parties have made a habit of calling the validity of America's elections

00:01:16.680 into question for decades.

00:01:18.100 But with the federal indictment of former President Donald Trump on Tuesday, an incredibly dangerous

00:01:23.760 line has been crossed.

00:01:24.940 The criminalization of political opposition in America threatens to become a common feature

00:01:31.000 of the electoral process, shattering the illusion of legitimacy that has held our decadent ruling

00:01:36.340 class and power for so long.

00:01:39.340 Conservatives like to see their elections as practical affairs, a contest between two competitors

00:01:44.380 in the marketplace of ideas vying for support and the chance to implement the priorities

00:01:49.040 of their supporters.

00:01:50.000 Once every four years, Americans walk down the supermarket aisle and evaluate their choice

00:01:56.140 for president like they're selecting a brand of toothpaste, then go on about their business.

00:02:01.080 But the relationship between rulers and the ruled is far more metaphysical than most voters

00:02:05.920 are willing to admit.

00:02:07.940 Americans believe in popular sovereignty and, like the coronation of a king, elections are a

00:02:13.420 ritual meant to affirm their faith in the system by which they transfer authority to the ruling

00:02:18.280 and class.

00:02:20.000 Humans will always invest their leaders with some portion of their hopes, dreams, and identity.

00:02:25.840 This might sound silly to modern ears, but one only needs to remember the fainting spells

00:02:30.160 of supporters at Obama rallies or the former president's speech about causing the waters

00:02:34.620 of Earth to recede after his election to see this manifested on the left.

00:02:39.460 The right's constant worship of the ghost of Ronald Reagan and the numerous pictures of Trump

00:02:44.060 being guided by the hand of Jesus Christ shows that this is not a one-sided

00:02:48.280 affair.

00:02:50.000 When the left now invokes our sacred democracy, they're speaking to a real belief that people

00:02:54.860 hold whether they realize it or not, and the validity of that belief must be protected

00:02:59.360 if the regime is to survive.

00:03:01.880 Donald Trump now faces three counts of criminal conspiracy and one count of obstruction for

00:03:06.860 repeatedly and publicly questioning the fairness of the 2020 election.

00:03:11.320 It should be obvious that making it impossible to question the fairness of a political process

00:03:16.100 through the exercise of an individual's First Amendment free speech protections ends any

00:03:21.020 chance at substantive political opposition.

00:03:23.960 And it is obvious.

00:03:25.500 That's the point.

00:03:26.220 What's better than a well-marbled ribeye sizzling on the barbecue?

00:03:30.300 A well-marbled ribeye sizzling on the barbecue that was carefully selected by an Instacart

00:03:35.540 shopper and delivered to your door.

00:03:37.620 A well-marbled ribeye you ordered without even leaving the kiddie pool.

00:03:42.020 Whatever groceries your summer calls for, Instacart has you covered.

00:03:46.160 Download the Instacart app and enjoy $0 delivery fees on your first three orders.

00:03:50.600 Service fees, exclusions, and terms apply.

00:03:53.720 Instacart.

00:03:54.660 Groceries that over-deliver.

00:03:57.100 The alleged co-conspirators named in the Trump indictment were attorneys who were offering

00:04:01.900 advice to a client.

00:04:03.880 It's not just the ability to question electoral results that's being threatened, but core aspects

00:04:09.280 of due process and freedom of speech that are enumerated in the Bill of Rights.

00:04:14.560 Questioning the legitimacy of elections is a tradition as old as elections themselves.

00:04:19.000 Voter fraud has and always will exist at some level, and the fervent denial of that basic

00:04:25.840 fact raises questions of its own.

00:04:28.600 The slogan, Vote Early and Vote Often, has been jokingly used to refer to the wildly corrupt

00:04:34.040 machine politics of Tammany Hall in New York or various leaders in Chicago.

00:04:39.340 The highly disputed election of 1877, which ended with the installation of Rutherford B.

00:04:45.120 Hayes in the Oval Office, required a backroom congressional deal to keep the nation from

00:04:50.060 tearing itself apart after the Civil War.

00:04:53.000 American history is full of examples, but in general elections have conveyed legitimacy

00:04:57.720 because individuals could exercise their right to free speech and raise questions if they

00:05:02.560 felt that the process was in some way compromised.

00:05:05.560 Coronations are about the rigid transfer of unquestioned authority.

00:05:09.200 The first election to imprint itself on my political consciousness was the presidential

00:05:15.840 contest between George W. Bush and Al Gore when I was in high school.

00:05:20.360 As a native Floridian, it was impossible to ignore the fact that your home state was at

00:05:24.500 the center of the most controversial election in living memory.

00:05:28.300 I vividly remember college professors, media pundits, and Democratic politicians endlessly

00:05:33.760 challenging the validity of the election in attacking Bush as an illegitimate president

00:05:38.760 who stole the election throughout both of his terms in office.

00:05:42.720 No charges were ever brought and no one went to jail for their assault on our sacred democracy.

00:05:48.740 The ability of the other side to question the election didn't create an existential threat

00:05:53.100 to the political system.

00:05:55.200 Since then, the losing side of each presidential election has never granted full legitimacy to

00:06:01.060 their victorious opponent.

00:06:02.340 A number of Republicans and conservative media personalities questioned Barack Obama's ability

00:06:08.780 to hold office with the birth certificate scandal in 2008.

00:06:12.920 Democrats lost their mind with the election of Donald Trump in 2016, calling for the destruction

00:06:18.680 of everything from the Electoral College to the Senate before eventually settling on the

00:06:23.940 fake Russian collusion narrative.

00:06:25.660 Celebrities made endless and unbearable montage videos demanding the removal of the duly elected

00:06:32.540 president, and Senator Kamala Harris claimed that voting machines had been hacked right in

00:06:37.700 front of her eyes.

00:06:39.480 Again, none of these people went to jail.

00:06:42.040 None of these people were threatened with criminal charges for questioning the validity of the election.

00:06:47.300 There are, of course, blatant examples of election interference in our recent past, but no one in power

00:06:53.420 seems to care very much.

00:06:54.640 The Democratic National Committee conspired with the Hillary Clinton campaign to rig the primary 1.00

00:07:00.280 against her populist opponent, Bernie Sanders. 0.99

00:07:03.700 Sanders was a grifter and a coward who immediately sold his delusional supporters down the river 0.99

00:07:08.720 for a pat on the head, so no one makes much of it now. 1.00

00:07:12.120 But the subversion of democracy was obvious and no one has ever paid a price.

00:07:17.300 Thanks to the Twitter files, we know that multiple divisions of the state security apparatus pressured

00:07:23.020 social media companies to suppress or completely lie about critical information like the Hunter

00:07:28.660 Biden laptop story in order to manipulate the outcome of the 2020 election.

00:07:33.860 Time magazine even had the unimaginable hubris to print a victory lap article about the secret,

00:07:40.040 shadowy cabal that saved the 2020 election.

00:07:42.940 We don't need to speculate about burst water pipes and magical ballot drops at 3 a.m.

00:07:49.000 because progressive elites have been more than happy to brag about how they subverted

00:07:53.260 the mechanics of the election through mail-in voting, media manipulation, and the direct

00:07:57.780 interference of federal agencies.

00:08:00.500 Americans may be subjected to endless propaganda about how a corrupt dementia patient won the most

00:08:06.580 votes ever in the most free and fair election in the nation's history, but the average person isn't

00:08:12.200 buying it.

00:08:13.600 An election so free and so fair that anyone who questions it is censored.

00:08:19.060 An election so free and so fair that those who protested are indefinitely detained.

00:08:24.700 An election so free and so fair that the political opposition must be federally charged and face years

00:08:31.400 in prison.

00:08:31.940 The last bits of regime legitimacy are being shredded by those who can no longer be bothered

00:08:38.040 to maintain the clown show that has stood in for rule of law.

00:08:42.300 Our elites are playing recklessly with the most fundamental myths of the nation, the rituals

00:08:47.440 that grant their power validity in the first place, and once those spiritual ties between

00:08:52.520 the rulers and the ruled have been broken, things get ugly.

00:08:57.020 Fast.

00:08:57.440 Fast.
