00:00:00.000 Anthropic is now announcing that they are committing a portion of their shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new entity with a structure that increases the stake as the company grows.
00:00:10.000 Subject to stockholder approval, 5% of Anthropic's shares will be committed today, with an additional 2% added at the board's discretion for every 50% increase in the company's value above a set baseline.
00:00:22.000 And again, the basic idea here is that they are, quote unquote, investing in the public benefit.
00:00:27.000 They say, as a public benefit corporation, most of our work in pursuit of our mission takes place inside the company.
00:00:33.000 These activities have both a public benefit component and for profit value, so we house them directly in the company.
00:00:38.000 But the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund will have increased flexibility and scale, enabling us to pursue our mission in new ways.
00:00:43.000 For example, we might explore large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations.
00:00:49.000 So they're not actually going to hand out stock in their company, God forbid.
00:00:52.000 Instead, so that you get to choose what to do with the money, they are going to determine what's in the public benefit and then they're going to donate to it.
00:00:59.000 Right?
00:00:59.000 So again, this is effective altruism 2.0.
00:01:03.000 So, the effective altruism movement was the basic idea that we will be as capitalist as we want to be, maybe including cheating and stealing, like Sam Bankman Fried.
00:01:11.000 And then we'll use more of our money for the causes that we think are really, really, really important.
00:01:17.000 Problem is, of course, Anthropic is a very left wing company.
00:01:19.000 And so, there is something bizarrely Orwellian about Anthropic because, again, they just send out their leadership to routinely tell you how Anthropic is going to get you all killed, destroy your job, and you will end up being crisped by the robots at some point in the future.
00:01:35.000 But at least they're setting up a public benefit fund so that all of their big brains can figure out where the money ought to go.
00:01:41.000 So there are some questions about what Anthropic is doing.
00:01:43.000 The Wall Street Journal points out that this so called Anthropic Long Term Benefit Trust has huge sway over the company.
00:01:50.000 It's governed by documents that we've never seen.
00:01:52.000 So it's totally unclear exactly how they're even going to run Anthropic or what this thing is supposed to do.
00:01:57.000 According to the Wall Street Journal, the trust has no explicit vote in many shareholder matters, instead, exercising power by appointing most of Anthropic's boards.
00:02:04.000 They have a lot of indirect power.
00:02:05.000 It can seat four members of Anthropic's seven member board and dismiss them.
00:02:09.000 Without cause, trustees can block corporate action.
00:02:11.000 Its mandate is to steer AI for humanity's long term benefit.
00:02:15.000 So, Anthropic named the first five trustees.
00:02:17.000 Now, the trust only has to consult the company when filling vacancies.
00:02:19.000 There are two currently.
00:02:21.000 Trustees include the former Fed chairman, Ben Bernanke, and Chairman Neil Buddy Shaw, the head of the Clinton Health Access Initiative.
00:02:27.000 Uh oh.
00:02:28.000 Anthropic says the trustees are financially disinterested and unaffected by Anthropic's material success.
00:02:33.000 They don't own Anthropic equity, they don't share it in its profits.
00:02:36.000 So, again, the idea is that trustees are going to run the company for the benefit of the general public.
00:02:41.000 All these sorts of little games tend not to work particularly well because if it runs too much against the interests of the company, the company will end up taking measures to stop all of it.
00:02:49.000 Some legal experts say that basically they have veto power, but with that said, totally unclear whether this is going to work or not.
00:02:59.000 So most other companies don't work this way.
00:03:02.000 Most companies take steps to insulate themselves from shareholders for a reason because you want the people who founded the company to continue running the company.
00:03:09.000 One of the things you don't want is sort of paralysis.
00:03:12.000 By diversity of analysis.
00:03:13.000 You don't want a group of people who sit there stroking their beards as the company goes under.
00:03:17.000 Now, shareholders can modify the trust and its powers without trustee consent if there are sufficiently large supermajorities.
00:03:24.000 Unclear what that supermajority looks like.
00:03:26.000 So we have literally no idea how this trust is going to work.
00:03:29.000 But supposedly this is going to work.
00:03:31.000 We'll find out whether Anthropic's trust centric version of governance works or not.
00:03:31.000 We'll find out.
00:03:36.000 I have some serious doubts.
00:03:38.000 It's more on this in a moment.
00:03:39.000 First, simply safe smart AI powered outdoor cameras can detect suspicious activity around your property.
00:03:44.000 And alert a live US based security agent.
00:03:46.000 That agent assesses the situation and can intervene through the camera in under 30 seconds, letting the person know they've been spotted and requesting urgent 911 dispatch when necessary.

00:04:42.000 Elon is doing it differently.
00:04:44.000 Elon announced that next year he will give one of his SpaceX shares to every kid in America.
00:04:48.000 This will be the first of many, which is kind of awesome.
00:04:50.000 It's awesome in a few different ways.
00:04:52.000 One, it gets every kid invested in the stock market, which is great.
00:04:56.000 This was also the idea of the Trump funds.
00:04:59.000 This is what Brad Gerstner has been pushing for a while, Michael Dell.
00:05:02.000 That's good.
00:05:03.000 Everybody feeling invested in the market is a good thing.
00:05:06.000 I would like to make the point, generally speaking, that the beauty of free markets is not the charity on the other end of the free market.
00:05:14.000 Charity is wonderful.
00:05:15.000 I give a lot of it.
00:05:16.000 Charity is great.
00:05:17.000 It is a virtue.
00:05:18.000 It is biblically mandated.
00:05:19.000 Charity is awesome.
00:05:21.000 Also, free markets have enriched and empowered more people on earth at scale than any amount of charity in the history of the human race.
00:05:30.000 Period.
00:05:31.000 Again, that is not a referendum on charity being bad.
00:05:33.000 It is to say that the value of SpaceX does not lie in Elon giving individual shares to every kid in America.
00:05:38.000 That's great.
00:05:38.000 I like that.
00:05:39.000 But the value of SpaceX lies in its innovation, it lies in its product, it lies in the fact that it's going to make your life better and easier.
00:05:47.000 That's the value of the tech.
00:05:49.000 Now, we are seeing a bizarre rebellion against tech in pretty much all of its forms. 1.00
00:05:56.000 Sometimes you kind of see why, but a lot of the time it's just unbelievably stupid. 0.99
00:06:00.000 So, for example, there's a brand new poll out about self driving cars. 0.99
00:06:06.000 And what this poll shows.
00:06:08.000 Is that somehow a plurality of voters believe that their city or town should ban self driving cars?
00:06:17.000 This is a survey from the argument.
00:06:21.000 41% of voters say there should be a ban on self driving cars compared to 28% who say it should be allowed.
00:06:28.000 31% say unsure.
00:06:31.000 Interestingly, male voters are 39 32 in favor of allowing self driving cars, female voters are 48% in favor of a ban. 0.67
00:06:43.000 I have some jokes about the female drivers, which I'll refrain from here. 0.99
00:06:49.000 Let us just say this is stupid on all fronts. 1.00
00:06:51.000 Self driving cars are wonderful. 1.00
00:06:54.000 Self driving cars will save literally tens of thousands of lives.
00:06:58.000 Tesla's full self drive is incredible.
00:07:01.000 Waymo is great.
00:07:04.000 The rebellion against self driving cars is a generalized rebellion against progress.
00:07:10.000 The downside of self driving cars is absolutely minimal.
00:07:13.000 You're going to have to explain it to me, truly.
00:07:16.000 Explain why self driving cars are bad.
00:07:19.000 The more self driving cars that are on the road, the safer they get, by the way, because it's human error that is generally causing people to crash.
00:07:27.000 Yeah, the sort of upswing in sentiment against tech is leading to a vast downgrade of the quality of life. 1.00
00:07:39.000 And that's incredibly stupid. 1.00
00:07:40.000 It's a gigantic mistake. 1.00
00:07:42.000 We should not participate in it.
00:07:43.000 People, don't do that.
00:07:45.000 What an amazing video you just watched!
00:07:47.000 Wasn't that amazing?
