The Ben Shapiro Show

Ep. 45 - How ISIS Really Recruits -- It Ain't Trump

Summary

On today's show, Ben Shapiro takes a look at the latest ISIS recruitment video and argues that Hillary Clinton and President Obama are making excuses for why ISIS is rising. He also points out that ISIS is not a threat to the United States in the same way that Ebola, climate change, and other non-existential threats are. And he points out why the media is blowing it all out of proportion and exaggerating the threat to make it seem like ISIS is a real threat. Plus, he talks about Hillary Clinton's schlonging of the pharmaceutical companies and why she should have been shamed for it in 2008. Ben Shapiro is the host of the conservative think tank, "Tribe to Demonize People Who Don't Care About Their Feelings" and founder of The Daily Wire. He's also a regular contributor to the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, and is a frequent contributor to CNN and the Weekly Standard, among other publications. 00:00:00.000 Welcome, welcome.
00:00:01.000 Here we are here on a Tuesday, just a couple of days before Christmas Eve, so everybody's very excited.
00:00:06.000 And there's a lot to talk about.
00:00:08.000 We're going to talk about Donald Trump saying that Hillary Clinton got schlonged by Obama in 2008.
00:00:13.000 He actually used that word, which of course is totally false.
00:00:17.000 Hillary Clinton has not been, she was not schlonged by President Obama or Senator Obama in 2008.
00:00:22.000 Fact is, she hasn't been schlonged for at least 30 years.
00:00:24.000 But we'll get to all of that.
00:00:25.000 We will also get to ISIS recruitment videos, plus some things that I hate, including Hillary Clinton, who is apparently trying to schlong the pharmaceutical companies.
00:00:34.000 We'll talk about all of that.
00:00:36.000 I'm Ben Shapiro, this is Tend to Demonize People Who Don't Care About Your Feelings.
00:00:44.000 Alrighty, so, here we are, and I want to start today's show by talking a little bit about something that the Democrats have been pushing, and that is this notion that Republicans, Donald Trump in particular, they are the people who are creating all of this impetus for recruitment to ISIS, that ISIS is using Donald Trump to recruit.
00:01:02.000 Now you remember Hillary Clinton in Saturday night's debate, in that little watched, little seen, they tried to hide it like Gollum tried to hide the ring, that debate.
00:01:10.000 But they hid that debate on a Saturday night.
00:01:12.000 But still, Hillary Clinton did say in that debate that Donald Trump was ISIS's best recruiting tool ever.
00:01:17.000 Their best recruiting tool.
00:01:18.000 And she said that they were creating videos with Donald Trump in them.
00:01:22.000 And then, Barack Obama, over the weekend, he did an interview with NPR.
00:01:26.000 And in this interview with NPR, he says that the only reason people even fear ISIS or fear terrorism is because of media exaggeration.
00:01:32.000 Here's President Obama blaming the media for ISIS's awareness and the fact that ISIS is rising.
00:01:39.000 You know, ISIL combines viciousness with very savvy media operations.
00:01:46.000 And as a consequence, if you've been watching television for the last month, all you've been seeing, all you've been hearing about is these guys with masks or black flags who are potentially coming to get you.
00:02:03.000 And so I understand why people are concerned about it, and this is a serious situation.
00:02:11.000 What is important is for people to recognize that the power, the strength of the United States and its allies are not threatened by an organization like this in the same way that
00:02:30.000 I don't know.
00:02:52.000 We're good to go.
00:03:13.000 This dichotomy that Obama tries to draw between existential threat and non-existential threat?
00:03:17.000 Let's be real about this.
00:03:19.000 In the entire history of the United States, the entire history of the country, there really have been only two existential threats.
00:03:25.000 Three if you count the American Revolution and the War of 1812.
00:03:28.000 The Civil War was an existential threat to the United States, although even then, not really, because the South didn't really want to take over the North.
00:03:34.000 And then there was an existential threat with regard to the Soviet Union.
00:03:37.000 But even the Nazis weren't really an existential threat to the United States, because the Nazis didn't have the capacity to come across the oceans.
00:03:43.000 We're good to go.
00:04:00.000 That if ISIS isn't an existential threat, if they just kill 14 people every couple of years in San Bernardino, or if they kill 130 people in Paris every so often, that's something we can live with.
00:04:09.000 It's not that big a deal.
00:04:10.000 It's really the media blowing all of this out of proportion.
00:04:13.000 Now, it is true that media coverage does create a heightened awareness and a heightened sense of fear among members of the public.
00:04:19.000 This has been true with everything from Ebola to climate change.
00:04:22.000 The question is, how much of a threat are these things really?
00:04:25.000 With Ebola, the threat was exaggerated.
00:04:27.000 With climate change, the threat is exaggerated.
00:04:29.000 Is the threat exaggerated with ISIS?
00:04:32.000 I really don't think so.
00:04:33.000 I don't think that most people think that ISIS is going to conquer the United States, but I think most people are concerned, rightly so, that somebody from ISIS could walk into a movie theater and shoot it up, or that somebody from ISIS could walk into a community center and shoot 31 people, including 14 dead.
00:04:48.000 That is not an idle worry, and I think that the American people are right to be worried about that.
00:04:52.000 But President Obama and Hillary Clinton, they make all of these excuses for why ISIS is rising.
00:04:57.000 I think it is worthwhile going through exactly why ISIS is rising in their own words.
00:05:01.000 So ISIS has released now, they did this last month, they released an English language recruitment video.
00:05:08.000 And we're gonna go through it, and we're gonna pause it every so often so I can explain what they're saying, because some of the words are in Arabic.
00:05:13.000 But, the recruitment video, the first thing that you'll notice, and folks, this is why you should subscribe, because the visuals are kind of important to this particular piece of audio.
00:05:21.000 You can still hear what's going on, obviously, but the visuals make it much more striking.
00:05:25.000 The visuals in this video are extraordinarily good.
00:05:28.000 I mean, really, really high quality.
00:05:30.000 This is not done in a cave somewhere.
00:05:31.000 There's an actual production facility.
00:05:34.000 Apparently, we know where it is, but they housed it in a civilian area, so we're not bombing it.
00:05:38.000 But this is something I, Jeremy Boring, managing editor of Daily Wire, he does videos for a lot of various different enterprises, including Prager University, and he's done videos, obviously, for Daily Wire.
00:05:48.000 We used to do videos for Truth Revolt.
00:05:50.000 And I asked him, how much would a video like the one you're about to watch cost?
00:05:53.000 I think so.
00:06:12.000 In this ISIS recruitment video is that nothing the left says about why ISIS is doing what it is doing, nothing they say about why ISIS is doing what they are doing, has anything to do with what ISIS actually says about what it's doing.
00:06:24.000 The left will say it's about climate change, or it's about the media, or it's about Donald Trump.
00:06:28.000 ISIS is pretty clear that the reason that they are doing what they are doing is one, they're Muslim.
00:06:33.000 Two, they think the West is a place of emptiness with no central value to it.
00:06:38.000 And three, they've won a string of victories over leftist governments.
00:06:41.000 This is really the theme of the video.
00:06:43.000 And I think it's worthwhile watching because we need to hear the enemy in their own words.
00:06:47.000 It is worthless.
00:06:49.000 My little sister is writing a graphic novel right now.
00:06:52.000 And in doing that graphic novel, she has to create a villain.
00:06:55.000 And so one of the things she's doing for research on the villain is she's reading Hitler's Mein Kampf.
00:07:00.000 And I told her it was a worthwhile endeavor to do that.
00:07:03.000 She started reading it, and she turned to me and she said, this is actually creepy because you read it, and it's well written, and the beginning is moving, it's all about Hitler and his father, and it's not the rantings of a total nutjob.
00:07:16.000 This is somebody who obviously was a rational human being with a deeply evil set of beliefs, and I said, right, that's sort of the point.
00:07:24.000 If we're going to take ISIS seriously, we have to figure out what it is that they think.
00:07:27.000 We'll take a look at this ISIS recruitment video and we'll break it down for you.
00:07:30.000 Here we go.
00:07:35.000 This is our Khilafah, in all its glory, remaining and expanding.
00:07:42.000 It was established in the year 1435 Hijri.
00:07:44.000 Its leader, from the tribe of Quraysh, is Shaykh Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and its territory is already greater than Britain, 8 times the size of Belgium, and 30 times the size of Qatar.
00:07:57.000 Okay, let's pause it there for a second.
00:07:58.000 Okay, so, Khalifa is their Islamic state, the Islamic regime.
00:08:01.000 So when they say our Khalifa is this size, that's what they mean.
00:08:05.000 They're already promoting the idea that they've created a state, which is more than Al-Qaeda ever could say, right?
00:08:10.000 This is why ISIS is different from Al-Qaeda, because ISIS actually tried to create an Islamic state, as opposed to Al-Qaeda, which said, we're going to live in Islamic states and then go target the West.
00:08:20.000 Their territorial integrity is vital to their case.
00:08:23.000 Right?
00:08:23.000 They have to say that they're winning.
00:08:25.000 This is the way that they recruit.
00:08:26.000 They say, we've taken over all this territory.
00:08:28.000 Now, how could they have taken over all this territory?
00:08:31.000 Hmm... Could it have had something to do with America pulling out all of its troops from Iraq and leaving the place wide open for 5,000 troops from ISIS to walk across the border?
00:08:41.000 5,000 people basically took over half of Iraq.
00:08:44.000 And this is their pitch.
00:08:46.000 And so far, this is a strong propaganda effort.
00:08:48.000 Let's continue.
00:08:50.000 It's a state built on the prophetic methodology, striving to follow the Qur'an and Sunnah.
00:08:56.000 Not a secular state built on man-made laws, whose soldiers fight for the interests of Tawhid legislators, liars, fornicators, corporations, and for the freedoms of Saudis.
00:09:08.000 We are men, honored with Islam, who climbed its peaks to perform jihad, answering the call to unite under one flag.
00:09:15.000 This... Okay, is there for a second?
00:09:16.000 Alright, so, there are a couple things that are going on here.
00:09:19.000 So, folks, if you can't see this, it's actually, it's really well made.
00:09:21.000 It's stunningly well made.
00:09:22.000 I mean, this is a very, very good video, in terms of aesthetic quality, obviously.
00:09:26.000 Its ideology is completely evil.
00:09:29.000 What they say is that they are men of Islam.
00:09:32.000 President Obama says they're not men of Islam.
00:09:34.000 Who do you think people are going to believe?
00:09:36.000 President Obama, who, according to these folks, is an emissary of the freedom of sodomites?
00:09:41.000 Or the people who are standing there with the ISIS flag pledging their allegiance to Allah?
00:09:45.000 Right?
00:09:46.000 Who do you think they're going to believe?
00:09:47.000 And when they say, when ISIS says, look at the West,
00:09:50.000 Right where they're fighting for dominant politicians and liars and and and what do they call it?
00:09:56.000 Fornicators?
00:09:57.000 They call Bill Clinton a fornicator?
00:09:58.000 So Hillary says Donald Trump's in this video.
00:10:00.000 Donald Trump is not in any of these videos.
00:10:01.000 Bill Clinton is in these videos and he doesn't even merit the title of politician.
00:10:06.000 He's called a fornicator by ISIS here.
00:10:08.000 They also showed George W. Bush and they showed Barack Obama here.
00:10:13.000 And what they say, basically, is that we live an empty lifestyle on behalf of corporations.
00:10:17.000 Now, what's amazing, of course, is that there's one other group in American life that says that America is built for the sake of corporations.
00:10:26.000 The American left.
00:10:27.000 They're using the dominant themes of the American left in order to push their own routine, and you're going to see them do more of this.
00:10:32.000 The pitch that ISIS makes is basically that conservative America is their enemy.
00:10:38.000 Leftist America is their enemy because they fight for the freedom of sodomites, and sodomites, of course, are gay people, in their parlance.
00:10:44.000 But what they are really saying here is they are saying that the real enemy are people who fight on behalf of corporations, which is the language of Bernie Sanders,
00:10:52.000 So all these attempts to paint them as this radical right-wing group, they're not radically right-wing.
00:10:57.000 In fact, they mirror a lot of the arguments of the left.
00:11:01.000 Osama bin Laden liked to argue that climate change was a Western imperialist effort to defeat the third world, which is basically what the American left says.
00:11:09.000 You wonder why the left sides with radical Muslims so often?
00:11:15.000 ISIS, but certainly they've been very kind to radical Muslims in Hamas, and even with ISIS, the truth is that they're not siding with ISIS, but they're okay with the rise of ISIS.
00:11:24.000 It doesn't bother them too much.
00:11:25.000 It bothers them significantly more if the U.S.
00:11:27.000 were to get deeply invested in war with ISIS, or Al-Qaeda, or Saddam Hussein, or any other Muslim.
00:11:33.000 But what's amazing about this is that their philosophy is a mash-up of radical Islam, and also they're taking tropes from the American left, which they realize are popular, in order to recruit people
00:11:42.000 And so the question is, and this really is a question, where does ISIS draw its crowd?
00:11:48.000 Where do they draw their crowd?
00:11:49.000 They're drawing their crowd from disaffected Muslims in the West.
00:11:52.000 And those disaffected Muslims are not conservative Americans.
00:11:56.000 We're not talking Republicans.
00:11:57.000 We're talking people who believe that the West has subjugated the third world and is a bad place and has done terrible things.
00:12:04.000 And so they're drawing from Muslims in America and abroad who also tend to believe bad things about the West.
00:12:12.000 I mean, the American left has lent some severe firepower to ISIS with their case that America's a bad place.
00:12:17.000 You're going to see that throughout.
00:12:18.000 There's a bunch of arguments that ISIS flips on its head.
00:12:21.000 The American left makes the arguments, then ISIS flips it on its head and uses it against America.
00:12:25.000 So we'll continue the video.
00:12:27.000 This is the source of our glory, our obedience to our Lord.
00:12:31.000 We are uncompromising in our call to Tawhid.
00:12:34.000 We only bow to Allah, unlike the countless deviant factions raising their false banners and changing with the winds of Jahili politics.
00:12:43.000 Yes, we are the soldiers who stopped the idols of nationalism, demolished the shitty symbols of Palmyra and Nineveh, and destroyed the Sykes-Picot borders.
00:12:54.000 We have to explain what he's talking about there.
00:12:56.000 So Keanu Reeves, who's narrating this video, Islamic Keanu Reeves, he says that they have demolished the idolatry.
00:13:04.000 The word that he's using in Arabic means idolatry.
00:13:07.000 The idols in Nineveh
00:13:09.000 Uh, and, uh, and Palmyra, which are, which are these, these 3,000, 4,000-year-old statues, and ISIS went in and blew them up, because after all, the Qur'an says that you're not supposed to tolerate idolatry.
00:13:19.000 So they went and they blew up these historic structures, these historic statues.
00:13:22.000 The Sykes-Picot borders that they're talking about are borders that were set up after World War I by the British, that separated Iraq from Syria, and drew a bunch of arbitrary lines in the Middle East.
00:13:32.000 Uh, and, and when they say that they're fighting the, uh, they're fighting the idol of nationalism, uh, again,
00:13:37.000 I seem to remember just a few weeks ago, we were playing a song on this very program that talked about a world without borders, a world without nations, right?
00:13:43.000 Nations are bad.
00:13:45.000 ISIS combines the worst elements of the radical left with radical Islam, and you're gonna see that continue.
00:13:50.000 This is a consistent theme.
00:13:51.000 This is not cherry-picking the points.
00:13:52.000 You'll see it.
00:13:53.000 It's over and over in this video.
00:13:55.000 ...no honor to be found in the remnants of shirk and nationalism, and no difference between an Arab and a non-Arab, or a black man and a white man, except through piety.
00:14:07.000 This is the glory of faith that unites us.
00:14:10.000 Justice is served with the establishment of the Islamic court... ...and pause it again.
00:14:14.000 So basically, they're doing the same thing the Soviet Union did back during the Soviet Union's heyday.
00:14:19.000 They're saying that America is bad because America is racist.
00:14:22.000 Right, so now they're hijacking the Black Lives Matter language.
00:14:24.000 Right, America's racist.
00:14:25.000 There's no difference between black and white and anyone else, except in allegiance to Allah, meaning that if you have allegiance to Allah, then you are part of the group, and if you're not, then you're not.
00:14:34.000 But there is no racial differentiation, and that's a slap at the supposed racism of the West.
00:14:38.000 They're taking every criticism that the left has leveraged against the right in the West, and they are using it in order to promote their own agenda here.
00:14:45.000 This is why everybody on the left is trying desperately to pretend that Donald Trump
00:14:51.000 Is the language that is driving ISIS.
00:14:53.000 The truth is, it's the American left that's driving the language of ISIS.
00:14:56.000 We'll continue.
00:14:57.000 There are thousands of Masajid in schools for our Cubs and Pearls, where they prepare themselves to share in the great rewards of expanding this caliphate.
00:15:05.000 America, you claim to have the greatest army history has known.
00:15:10.000 You may have the numbers and weapons, but your soldiers lack the will and resolve.
00:15:15.000 Still scarred from their defeats in Afghanistan and Iraq, they return dead, or suicidal, with over 6,500 of them killing themselves each year.
00:15:26.000 So while you go around cooking the facts on the results of your military airstrikes, we continue to haunt the minds of your soldiers and sow fear into their hearts, with 18 of your soldiers committing suicide each day.
00:15:40.000 Okay, we'll pause it there.
00:15:41.000 So, again, this is a leftist trope.
00:15:45.000 How many movies have you seen just in the last few years about American soldiers coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan who are suicidal, and depressed, and suffer from PTSD, and can't handle themselves, and they can't handle what they've done, and they come home and they kill themselves or they alienate their families?
00:16:00.000 This is how the media covers the military, because the left, in essence, really does not like the American military, which is why they're attempting to slash it.
00:16:07.000 They see it as a tool of colonialism and imperialism and therefore they have to portray America.
00:16:11.000 They can't say that American soldiers are bad.
00:16:13.000 That went out in the 60s.
00:16:14.000 Instead what they say is that American soldiers are victims.
00:16:17.000 There's no draft anymore.
00:16:18.000 Everybody volunteered.
00:16:19.000 But everybody who comes back from the military is a victim and has to be treated as a victim and they're dying of suicide every day.
00:16:27.000 So the way that ISIS plays this is actually smart.
00:16:30.000 What they say is the reason that you're committing suicide is because we defeated you.
00:16:34.000 We defeated you so badly that you cut and you ran, and then you killed yourself later.
00:16:37.000 Okay, now these statistics are not true.
00:16:38.000 There's 18 suicides each day.
00:16:41.000 That includes anyone who has ever served in the military, and the majority of people who are killing themselves are people who are above the age of 50.
00:16:47.000 So it's not people who are coming home and are young.
00:16:49.000 There is an elevated suicide rate lately for members of the military who are younger, but it's not 18 suicides a day.
00:16:55.000 Every year it's about 350 active duty service members who kill themselves, which is still a lot of people, but it isn't 6,500 people.
00:17:02.000 Every single year, but the point that they're making is the same point the left is making, which is that our soldiers are crazy or mentally fragile, that they don't have the will to fight.
00:17:11.000 Now, the truth is, the truth is our soldiers definitely have the will to fight.
00:17:14.000 I mean, if you've ever talked to anybody in the military, they are ready to go over there and kick some ass right now.
00:17:18.000 And the people who were pulled out from Iraq as a general rule were very much against the idea that we're going to hand over the country to a bunch of people who are going to give it away.
00:17:25.000 They saw it as a betrayal of the sacrifices made by them and their friends, and they were right.
00:17:31.000 This is why whenever people argue with me, I'm a young guy, and they say, well, why didn't you go into the military?
00:17:35.000 Are you a chicken hawk?
00:17:36.000 You didn't go in the military, and yet you argue in favor of American interventionism in places like Afghanistan.
00:17:42.000 And I say, okay, I'm very happy.
00:17:44.000 If you want to, we will make a deal.
00:17:46.000 Only current and former members of the military get to vote on foreign policy.
00:17:49.000 And the left immediately shies away from this because the truth is, as a general rule, members of the military agree with me.
00:17:55.000 Members of the military are ready to go and kick ass right now.
00:17:58.000 It's our politicians who are the cowards.
00:18:00.000 Our politicians are the cowards, not the men and women of the military.
00:18:03.000 But ISIS is using the fact
00:18:05.000 That we cut and ran in Iraq and Afghanistan thanks to President Obama.
00:18:09.000 They're using that as a recruitment tool.
00:18:11.000 So, is Trump the problem here?
00:18:13.000 No.
00:18:13.000 Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton who created this policy are the problem and you'll see that is the theme of this video over and over and over again.
00:18:20.000 Let's continue.
00:18:21.000 ...before you've even advanced.
00:18:24.000 And in addition to the $6 trillion price tag on your war against the Muslims, you're now too weak to put boots on the ground.
00:18:31.000 You opt instead to attack us from the air with missiles, each worth $250,000, while we send your proxies to hell with 50-cent bullets.
00:18:44.000 Then, there's your new coalition of devils, with Iran, Turkey, and Russia joining the fray.
00:18:50.000 That's because the Milav Khufr will always unite you together to fight the truth.
00:18:56.000 So bring it on, all of you.
00:18:59.000 Your numbers only increase us in faith, and we're counting your banners, which our prophets said would reach 80 in number.
00:19:07.000 And then, the flames of war will finally burn you on the hills of death.
00:19:13.000 Bring it on, for we echo the mighty call of our prophets.
00:19:19.000 Gather your allies.
00:19:20.000 Plot against us, and show us no respite.
00:19:25.000 Our ally is the greatest.
00:19:27.000 He is Allah, and all glory belongs to him.
00:19:32.000 Okay, so.
00:19:34.000 And then we, uh, and then we cut into the universe and suddenly we're underneath the, the Star Destroyer.
00:19:38.000 And then we go to Star Wars.
00:19:39.000 But it, but, uh, but what they're talking about at the very end
00:19:43.000 When they say that we're going to have wars in the hills of Dabiq, Dabiq is a place in northern Syria, and according to ISIS, according to their Islamic prophecy, no, not their Buddhist prophecy, their Islamic prophecy, there will be an Armageddon battle there between 80 nations, an alliance of Christians and the Muslims, and that will eventually usher in the Messianic Age for Muslims.
00:20:02.000 So, notice also in that last portion there,
00:20:05.000 There are a couple other elements of politics that were brought in by ISIS.
00:20:08.000 One was, you guys can't afford to keep boots on the ground because you spend too much money on the wars.
00:20:12.000 Does this sound familiar to anyone?
00:20:15.000 Right?
00:20:15.000 We've spent trillions of dollars on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
00:20:18.000 We've bankrupted ourselves.
00:20:19.000 We spent so much money and now we can never put troops on the ground, no boots on the ground.
00:20:23.000 And they're saying, well, okay, you know, you're going to proclaim that you're winning from the air, but you're not winning from the air because you're dropping these really, really expensive bombs on us and we're shooting bullets at your proxies and killing them.
00:20:33.000 And there is some truth to this.
00:20:35.000 I mean, this is not completely false.
00:20:37.000 In every horrible lie, there is a grain of truth, and there is a grain of truth to the idea...
00:20:42.000 We're good to go.
00:21:12.000 Did anything in there say Donald Trump is ISIS's chief recruiting tool?
00:21:16.000 Donald Trump has said we shouldn't allow Muslims to immigrate to the West without better security checks.
00:21:21.000 Did you notice anything in there about Donald Trump is mean to Muslims, therefore you should come join ISIS?
00:21:26.000 Did you notice anything in there about that?
00:21:27.000 I didn't either.
00:21:28.000 What I noticed is we are strong, you are weak.
00:21:29.000 That's their pitch.
00:21:31.000 Their pitch is we are ideologically and militarily powerful.
00:21:34.000 We are men fighting from the hills on the basis of Allah.
00:21:38.000 And you guys are weaklings!
00:21:40.000 That's their basis.
00:21:41.000 And their basis is Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
00:21:43.000 The greatest recruiting tools that ISIS ever had were Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
00:21:47.000 The proof is in the pudding.
00:21:48.000 ISIS did not exist until 2011-2012, when it grew under President Obama and his Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.
00:21:56.000 Now, meanwhile, I mean, it's amazing how the left has to create this massive disconnect with reality with regard to ISIS and Syrian refugees and the nature of radical Islam.
00:22:06.000 There's another video that came out yesterday with a Syrian refugee talking about Islam and Islamic radicalism and talking specifically about what he thinks
00:22:15.000 Muslims ought to do in Europe, and it is not what the left has been suggesting.
00:22:19.000 It's not a bunch of people who are just desperate to leave, at least this guy says.
00:22:23.000 It's not a bunch of people desperate to leave because they're just looking for a better life outside of the helter-skelter of Syrian war.
00:22:29.000 Here is a Syrian Muslim refugee talking online about his reason for leaving Syria.
00:22:34.000 I'll read you the subtitles because obviously if you aren't subscribing, again, you should, but if you aren't subscribing, then I'll read you the subtitles.
00:22:41.000 He's speaking in, it looks like he's speaking in German.
00:22:45.000 This is my main goal for leaving Syria is to lead people to the acceptance of Islam.
00:22:53.000 If my wish comes true, I will gladly forego the whole world.
00:22:57.000 For this purpose, I would not only sell Syria, but also my parents, who are more valuable to me than Syria.
00:23:06.000 I swear by Allah, I only came here for this one goal.
00:23:11.000 But this will be very demanding work for me.
00:23:14.000 And for this reason, I've met with a few men and women who want to know more about Islam.
00:23:26.000 I've observed that they are curious and willing to get to know Islam through us.
00:23:35.000 So he's not coming to interpolate himself into Western culture.
00:23:38.000 He's not coming to integrate himself into Western culture.
00:23:41.000 He's coming to convert people.
00:23:43.000 Right?
00:23:43.000 That's why many Muslims are coming.
00:23:46.000 And this idea that they're coming because Donald Trump doesn't want them to come is just asinine and silly.
00:23:50.000 But don't worry, Hillary Clinton lying about the rationale for ISIS.
00:23:53.000 See, this is actually an important thing.
00:23:54.000 This is something the media should be covering.
00:23:56.000 The media should be covering, why is it that ISIS is thriving?
00:23:59.000 Why is ISIS doing well?
00:24:00.000 They're not going to cover that.
00:24:01.000 They will, however,
00:24:03.000 Let me just tell you.
00:24:04.000 I may win, I may not win.
00:24:27.000 Hillary, that's not a president.
00:24:29.000 That's not.
00:24:30.000 She's not taking us to the- Everything that's been involved in Hillary has been losses.
00:24:34.000 You take a look.
00:24:35.000 Even her race to Obama!
00:24:36.000 She was gonna beat Obama!
00:24:39.000 I don't know who'd be worse.
00:24:41.000 I don't know.
00:24:41.000 How does it get worse?
00:24:43.000 But she was gonna beat, she was favored to win, and she got schlonged.
00:24:47.000 She lost.
00:24:47.000 I mean, she lost.
00:24:50.000 Okay, schlong, for people who don't understand the reference, is a Yiddish term, and schlong is a penis.
00:24:55.000 And apparently, there's another Yiddish term that is called schlogen, or schlagen, and so some people were suggesting that maybe he mixed it up.
00:25:05.000 I doubt it.
00:25:06.000 But, as I said earlier, he's totally wrong.
00:25:10.000 Hillary did not get schlonged by Obama in 2008.
00:25:12.000 She hasn't been schlonged for three decades.
00:25:14.000 But this is generating more headlines because, oh, vulgar Donald Trump.
00:25:18.000 How could he be president?
00:25:19.000 Vulgar, vulgar Donald Trump.
00:25:21.000 It's just so terrible.
00:25:22.000 Okay, which disturbs you more?
00:25:24.000 Donald Trump's language or that ISIS video?
00:25:27.000 If it's the ISIS video, then you know who should never be president.
00:25:30.000 The people who give that impetus to ISIS.
00:25:32.000 The ISIS video, just for me, for my money, is a lot more scary than the Donald Trump video.
00:25:38.000 But not to President Obama.
00:25:39.000 President Obama thinks that Donald Trump is the scariest guy because Donald Trump is generating all sorts of nasty feeling about people.
00:25:45.000 Nasty feelings.
00:25:47.000 President Obama said back in, I think it was Audacity of Hope, his second autobiography, President Obama said that if it ever came to
00:25:56.000 Americans versus the Muslims.
00:25:57.000 He knows that he would stand with the Muslims.
00:25:59.000 He said that because he thought Islamophobia would be the worst thing in the world.
00:26:02.000 He's continuing along those lines.
00:26:03.000 The only reason that white men are following Trump is because Trump is scaring them into following him with talk about those crazy Muslims.
00:26:11.000 Here's President Obama's clip 5.
00:26:13.000 Because of the financial crisis, because of technology, because of globalization, the fact that wages and incomes have been flatlining for some time and that particularly
00:26:24.000 Blue-collar men have had a lot of trouble in this new economy where they're no longer getting the same bargain that they got when they were going to a factory and able to support their families on a single paycheck.
00:26:40.000 You combine those things and it means that there's going to be potential anger, frustration, fear.
00:26:49.000 Some of it justified, but just misdirected.
00:26:53.000 And I think somebody like Mr. Trump's taking advantage of that.
00:26:58.000 I mean, that's what he's exploiting.
00:27:00.000 All right, enough of this.
00:27:01.000 So Trump is exporting the hate.
00:27:03.000 It's the bitter clingers language all over again from 2008, right?
00:27:06.000 Everybody who supports his opponent is somebody who's bitter, and they lost their job, and they're living in a Rust Belt town, and they're the father from Footloose, and they're all just these terrible downtrodden people
00:27:17.000 Like Christian Balin out of the furnace and they're just being exploited by Donald Trump.
00:27:21.000 And that's really what we should fear.
00:27:22.000 We should fear the Trump movement.
00:27:23.000 We shouldn't fear the fact that President Obama has made ISIS an actual power in the region as well as a threat to people outside the region.
00:27:32.000 That's something that we shouldn't fear.
00:27:34.000 Again, if you are looking at the geopolitical situation right now and you're still thinking of voting Democrat, please slap yourself in the face repeatedly because it's just, it's absurd.
00:27:42.000 Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton is pushing her new routine.
00:27:44.000 We're good to go.
00:28:04.000 It all sounds good.
00:28:05.000 This is one of those things that sounds good even to Republicans.
00:28:07.000 Oh, let's dump a bunch of money into research for Alzheimer's.
00:28:09.000 Who could oppose money for research to Alzheimer's?
00:28:12.000 I don't oppose money for research to Alzheimer's.
00:28:14.000 There's only one problem with all of this, which is that Hillary Clinton, like all of the Democrats before her, is a snake oil salesperson.
00:28:21.000 Like an actual snake oil salesperson.
00:28:22.000 She's selling snake oil.
00:28:24.000 The government can cure Alzheimer's if you throw enough money at the problem.
00:28:27.000 Really?
00:28:28.000 Are all the researchers and Alzheimer's just sitting around waiting for those government grants?
00:28:31.000 They've just been sitting on their hands with their thumb up their butt waiting for Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton to sign them a check?
00:28:36.000 Here's the fact.
00:28:37.000 John Edwards, if you remember back to 2004, he actually said at a campaign rally that Christopher Reeves, the guy from Superman, he would get up and walk again if John Kerry was elected president in 2004.
00:28:49.000 He said, we will fund all of this research into paralysis and we will cure paralysis if John Kerry is elected president.
00:28:55.000 Joe Biden, just a few weeks ago, when he announced that he was not in the race any longer, Joe Biden said that he wanted a moonshot to cure cancer, as though the only thing that separates us from curing all of these terrible diseases is government intransigence.
00:29:09.000 If it just weren't for all of these government actors standing in the way, we could just drop a bunch of money, and boom, cancer would be cured.
00:29:15.000 There's only one problem with all of this, which is it's complete and utter hogwash.
00:29:19.000 And I think it's important to explain this because there are too many people who buy into it.
00:29:22.000 It's just nonsense.
00:29:23.000 The vast, vast, vast, vast majority of all useful drugs in the world are created by private pharmaceutical companies.
00:29:30.000 They are created by drug companies with a profit margin and a necessity for creating profitable products.
00:29:36.000 And there's an old joke about the Greeks versus the Romans.
00:29:39.000 The old joke about the Greeks versus the Romans, that the reason the Roman Empire defeated the Greeks and eventually ended up supplanting the Greeks is because while the Greeks were sitting around talking about the theory of building, the Romans were inventing cement.
00:29:50.000 And the idea is that there is sort of a dichotomy between making products that work and the worries about theory.
00:29:55.000 The theory of government-funded research is that government-funded research will create the underlying scientific theory, and then building on that scientific theory, drug companies will create the profitable drugs.
00:30:05.000 There's only one problem, which is that that
00:30:07.000 Actually, it's not typically the way things work when it comes to scientific development.
00:30:11.000 It wasn't that somebody developed the theory of the lightbulb.
00:30:13.000 It's that there were tons of people competing to develop the actual lightbulb.
00:30:17.000 And then afterward, you figure out the theory of the lightbulb.
00:30:19.000 The theory of the lightbulb actually didn't matter all that much.
00:30:21.000 The mechanics of the lightbulb mattered a lot.
00:30:23.000 Ask your plumber if he knows the theories of water pressure.
00:30:25.000 Like, why does water pressure work the way it works?
00:30:29.000 Your plumber probably doesn't know the answer, but he certainly knows how to fix your toilet.
00:30:32.000 Well, the drug companies are in the business of fixing the human body.
00:30:35.000 Right?
00:30:36.000 These government-funded agencies are in the business of basic science.
00:30:40.000 This is not a case against all government funding of scientific research, but it is to say that Hillary Clinton said, in the first Democratic debate, she said it openly, Hillary Clinton said, who are your enemies?
00:30:49.000 The drug companies.
00:30:50.000 She said her enemies are the drug companies, so if you are going to say that you're defeating Alzheimer's, don't go after the only people who have any history of actually defeating Alzheimer's and actually fighting these things.
00:31:00.000 Okay, it's all private companies that are doing that work.
00:31:03.000 Okay, it's time for some things that I like and some things that I hate.
00:31:07.000 Something that I like.
00:31:07.000 There's a great short story.
00:31:09.000 I'm trying to remember the author, but the name of the short story is The Most Dangerous Game.
00:31:12.000 It's a phenomenal short story.
00:31:13.000 If you haven't read it, it's kind of a great horror-adventure short story.
00:31:17.000 You can find it online, you can buy it at Amazon, and it'll take you maybe 20 minutes to read, 25 minutes to read.
00:31:23.000 And it's just, it's fantastic.
00:31:24.000 There have been more movies that are kind of softly based on The Most Dangerous Game than probably any other short story.
00:31:30.000 It really is terrific.
00:31:31.000 So, check that out.
00:31:32.000 Okay.
00:31:33.000 Things that I hate.
00:31:35.000 I was driving yesterday and I noticed that there was a Kia Soul in front of me.
00:31:39.000 First of all, if your car is your soul, then you're stupid.
00:31:42.000 But the Kia Soul is in front of me and the Kia Soul is one of these cars that screams, I'm an environmentalist, right?
00:31:48.000 There are certain cars, the Nissan Leaf, right?
00:31:51.000 There are certain cars that just scream at you, I'm an environmentalist and therefore I'm a better human being than you are.
00:31:57.000 If you drive a Prius,
00:31:58.000 You can beat little children in your backyard, and it won't matter.
00:32:01.000 Everybody thinks that you are just grand and glorious.
00:32:03.000 Here in California, you are crunchy, and you are wonderful, and you are just... you're a cut above.
00:32:08.000 You're the greatest person who ever lived, if you drive a Prius, in the state of California.
00:32:12.000 And in fact, they've done studies, and what they found, actually, is that if you drive a Prius, you're more likely to be an a-hole.
00:32:17.000 I don't think so.
00:32:31.000 Well, there's this guy in the Kia Soul and he's in front of me, and I noticed that as he's pulling onto the freeway over at Havenhurst, I think, he's pulling onto the freeway and down rolls the window and boom, littered right out the window.
00:32:44.000 Right out the window.
00:32:45.000 And I thought to myself, well, yeah, this is sort of the
00:32:49.000 Feeling of justification and decency that people get from worshiping the idol of nature.
00:32:54.000 Here I am.
00:32:54.000 I've done my part for nature.
00:32:56.000 I bought this really crappy car that fits like a person and a half and gets a lot of miles per gallon because I can literally pick it up and fold it up and put it in my pocket when I'm done for the evening.
00:33:07.000 And I've done enough for the environment today.
00:33:09.000 I'm tossing this hamburger wrapper out the window.
00:33:11.000 Well, the mother of all of these people is this woman apparently named Megan Kimball.
00:33:16.000 Maybe she's a very nice person.
00:33:17.000 I don't know her.
00:33:18.000 But, her column is really stupid.
00:33:20.000 She has written this book, and she wrote a column in the Washington Post called, quote, I ate only unprocessed foods for a year.
00:33:27.000 Okay, and so, the idea is she ate only unprocessed foods for a year.
00:33:31.000 I know people, by the way, who eat nothing but unprocessed foods their entire life.
00:33:35.000 They're called poor people and they live in the third world and they die at age 30.
00:33:39.000 The fact is that, the reality is that processed foods, for all of the crap that processed foods get, and there's a lot of bad stuff about processed foods, I tend to eat healthy, I like eating healthy, but the idea that processed foods are the worst threat to people, talk about first world problems, but there's a virtue that attaches to you if you say that you eat unprocessed foods.
00:33:56.000 So only two groups of people, Adam Corolla does rich man, poor man, where he says there are certain things that only a rich guy can get away with and a poor guy can get away with,
00:34:03.000 Right, and so he talks about, for example, if you have a car in your front yard, right, something only a rich guy can get away with and a poor guy can get away with, in one case it's like a beat-up old Chevy from 1956 with all the wheels missing, and in the other case it's a Rolls-Royce that you park on your front lawn to show how rich you are, and this is a rich man-poor man scenario.
00:34:20.000 The people who eat unprocessed foods in the world are the people who literally have access only to unprocessed foods, and uber-wealthy people living in the first world who shop at Whole Foods, which is the most expensive store
00:34:30.000 On Planet Earth.
00:34:32.000 So she writes this whole long piece about how she is a better person for eating unprocessed food.
00:34:37.000 She says, I wanted to stop eating processed food for a lot of reasons.
00:34:41.000 There was the environment.
00:34:42.000 We live in an era of climate change, when natural resources are becoming scarce, and our food system is increasingly dependent on fossil fuels.
00:34:48.000 Okay, first of all, let me just point out, there is no shortage of fossil fuels, okay?
00:34:52.000 All of that was crap.
00:34:52.000 Everybody who said there was a shortage of fossil fuels, we're gonna run out in the 70s, it's nonsense.
00:34:57.000 Look at your gas prices today.
00:34:59.000 Your gas prices?
00:35:01.000 Let's put it this way.
00:35:02.000 How much is a gallon of milk now at the store?
00:35:04.000 I haven't bought a gallon lately.
00:35:05.000 I buy the half gallons.
00:35:07.000 I'm going to say a gallon of milk is at least $5.
00:35:09.000 A gallon of milk is at least $5.
00:35:11.000 It costs significantly more for a gallon of milk than a gallon of oil.
00:35:14.000 Right?
00:35:15.000 And milk is a replenishable resource.
00:35:17.000 Unless you eat the cow, which is delicious.
00:35:19.000 But, milk is a replenishable resource.
00:35:22.000 It just goes to show you... I mean, in fact, how much is a gallon of water?
00:35:26.000 A gallon of water now is like a buck fifty at the store.
00:35:28.000 So, there are places in the country where oil is cheaper than water.
00:35:32.000 So you're telling me that we're running out of oil?
00:35:34.000 No, we are not.
00:35:35.000 It's just there are political reasons.
00:35:37.000 I consider the enormous influence food companies wield in our national politics.
00:35:41.000 There is truth to the idea, by the way, that food companies wield influence in our national politics.
00:35:45.000 That's why the government is corrupt and should never set nutrition standards.
00:35:48.000 If you remember the old food pyramid, and you remember the bottom of the food pyramid was all grains?
00:35:52.000 If you ate that many grains, you would die of obesity at age 26, right?
00:35:56.000 But that was because the corn industry and a bunch of wheat...
00:36:00.000 We're good.
00:36:20.000 My local food system?
00:36:22.000 So I've never understood this local food system nonsense.
00:36:25.000 So you want to impoverish the guy living in China growing your food by helping the guy living in Detroit growing your food.
00:36:31.000 Isn't that a little bit nationalistic of you?
00:36:33.000 Isn't that a little bit xenophobic of you?
00:36:36.000 She says, I was tired of reading about what I should do.
00:36:38.000 I wanted to explore what I could do.
00:36:39.000 And then this thing goes on for like 3,000 words about how all she ate was unprocessed foods and how this makes her a better person.
00:36:47.000 She says, she feels better, stronger, and fuller.
00:36:50.000 I found a sense of community in the place I live.
00:36:52.000 While it's true that dollars spent on local businesses are dollars withheld from unaccountable corporations, it's also true that spending money better can make a more lovely Sunday morning and a more delicious Sunday dinner.
00:37:02.000 Listen, I'm fine.
00:37:03.000 You want to eat organic?
00:37:04.000 Eat organic.
00:37:05.000 You want to eat local?
00:37:06.000 Eat local.
00:37:06.000 You want to eat natural?
00:37:07.000 Good for you.
00:37:08.000 My great downfall as an eater is that I think vegetables were created by Satan.
00:37:12.000 But this idea that you are a better person because you are eating
00:37:18.000 Unprocessed food, as opposed to processed food.
00:37:22.000 See, I consider you a better person based on what you do with your life.
00:37:25.000 I consider you a better person based on how many people you help.
00:37:28.000 And let's just make one thing clear about these corporations.
00:37:31.000 These corporations employ a lot of people.
00:37:34.000 And those unprocessed foods that everybody's whining about, one of the reasons that processed foods sell so well is because they last on the shelf forever.
00:37:42.000 Right?
00:37:42.000 One of the problems that we have for most of human history is that if you cut a piece of meat,
00:37:46.000 You couldn't freeze it.
00:37:46.000 There were no freezing mechanisms and it was spoiled within a day and a half.
00:37:50.000 Right?
00:37:50.000 So you really had to sell it out.
00:37:52.000 Because of freezing, because of processing, because we can now maintain foods for periods of years, lots of people aren't starving specifically because of that.
00:37:59.000 When you go to your food drive and you figure, I'm going to ship this food to Africa, you know, a hundred years ago you couldn't ship that food to Africa because it would spoil halfway there.
00:38:06.000 It would spoil halfway out of town actually.
00:38:09.000 This is not a case that unprocessed foods are better than processed foods.
00:38:12.000 If you find virtue
00:38:14.000 In eating unprocessed foods versus processed foods, you need a better moral system.
00:38:18.000 You need better opponents to fight.
00:38:20.000 Because now you're ghost hunting.
00:38:21.000 Now you're just patting yourself on the back for doing something that really has very little impact on the world in a positive way.
00:38:27.000 And I'm sorry.
00:38:28.000 I hope it makes you feel better.
00:38:29.000 I hope that if you eat unprocessed foods and raw fish and all the rest of it, it makes you feel all clean on the inside.
00:38:34.000 But if it makes you feel spiritually clean, as opposed to, you know, actually helping people, then you're not helping anybody.
00:38:40.000 I'm Ben Shapiro.
00:38:40.000 This is The Ben Shapiro Show.
