00:00:40.000The 83 year old was in visible disbelief and began crying for 45 minutes.
00:00:43.000I've made a mistake, Brigitte Stegman, known affectionately to her family as Gigi or Oma, wailed.
00:00:48.000Yet 48 hours after she wept uncontrollably at the notion of MAID, which is what they call assisted suicide up in Canada, Stegman is said to have died with her hands clasped in prayer, covered in her own blood, due to a botched first attempt at connecting the IV.
00:01:02.000Krennendonk is currently in the process of desperately appealing to the chief coroner's office in Ontario.
00:01:06.000As well as the patient's ombudsman and Belleville police, in a bid to ascertain what happened the morning of July 10th at the Pearl Care Home in Knifton was legal.
00:01:14.000So prior to Stegman's death that summer, Cranand Zonk had been her caregiver for 12 years and her medical power of attorney for the past six.
00:01:20.000A year and a half before her death, the family made the decision to house Stegman in the Pearl as her physical and cognitive health began to deteriorate.
00:01:26.000In February, she was diagnosed with stage four stomach cancer, but doctors weren't certain about whether the diagnosis meant she had six months to live or maybe up to two years.
00:01:34.000During the cognitive assessment, which she sat in on, Cranand Zonk claims the questions were curiously designed.
00:01:39.000In that the doctor couldn't immediately verify the answers.
00:01:43.000So, again, the questions should have been things like who's the prime minister or what was today's date.
00:01:48.000But instead, she was asked personal questions like how many siblings she had.
00:01:51.000So, there was no way for the doctors to know the answer to that.
00:02:05.000According to government guidelines, a patient must be of sound mind and have a grievous and irremediable medical condition to be eligible for assisted suicide in Canada.
00:02:14.000And again, this unfortunately is not rare in Canada at all.
00:02:19.000Here's a Canadian American woman named Kristen Logan who received an assisted suicide pamphlet from the Canadian government after she was diagnosed with cancer.
00:02:52.000And as I'm waiting for even the first call from the oncology team, I get this pamphlet in the mail basically telling me that I can go and kill myself.

00:03:58.000All of the rips on the American healthcare system leave aside the fact that pretty much all medical innovation happens in the United States.
00:04:03.000According to the Wall Street Journal, an outside advisory committee to the FDA will review Grail's multi cancer early detection test.
00:04:10.000Grail's Galeri test leads a fast developing field of liquid biopsies that screen asymptomatic patients for signals of cancer in the blood.
00:04:16.000The goal is to diagnose cancers earlier when they're easier to treat and the odds of survival are higher.
00:04:22.000So it looks as though Galeri is working.
00:04:26.000A randomized control trial conducted with UK's National Health Service tracked about 142,000 asymptomatic patients.
00:04:31.000Age 50 to 77, half received the Galeri test every year.
00:04:35.000Galeri caught four times as many cancers in total than the UK's four recommended screenings for colon, breast, lung, and cervical cancer, which is fantastic.
00:04:44.000And again, this is what happens when you have ready pools of capital to invest in medical RD.
00:04:50.000That is why private markets continue to matter.
00:04:53.000Democrats, of course, if they had the chance, would essentially ban all private capital from the medical industry, which is not going to work.
00:05:17.000Funding is useful because funding allows for the actual development of products, goods, and services.
00:05:23.000I just introduced a bill that would ban private equity from owning your doctor.
00:05:28.000It's called the Stop Corporate Takeovers of Physicians Act because doctors should be able to do what's best for their patients, not What's best for some wealthy investor?

00:06:24.000The second thing that we're going to do is we're going to do some additional verification.
00:06:27.000We expect that most of these people are fraudulently enrolled, but we're going to do some additional verification on about 419,000 people.

00:06:39.000And second of all, we're going to make sure that they actually meet the income threshold requirements in order to receive these Obamacare benefits.
00:06:46.000To put into context the amount of money that we're stopping from going to fraudsters today, $2.2 billion.
00:06:52.000The average American child receives about $4,000 in health care benefits every single year.
00:06:58.000That means that we are saving 550,000 American children's worth of health care that was going to fraudsters and now will go to the essential services for which it was meant to go.

00:07:13.000Again, what he's cracking down on are illegal immigrants who are getting Obamacare, as well as people who are above income thresholds who are getting Obamacare.
