00:00:00.000 hello everyone welcome to the critical compass my name is mike and uh my co-host james is with us
00:00:08.140 of course uh we got a short one today this is just a little bit of a touch base um we've got
00:00:14.140 an event coming up it's not our event it's an app event it's called the i am alberta rally
00:00:18.640 we'll uh we'll link in the description of the notes and everything uh big rally coming up at
00:00:24.580 the alberta ledge uh we're going to be there this saturday and uh and james i think has some info
00:00:29.680 on it as well and we'll um we'll just talk a little bit about what we're going to expect and
00:00:33.440 uh and hopefully what we can chat about with you guys when you come see us when we're there
00:00:38.380 yeah this is one that you should not miss uh there was a rally back in may and it didn't have much
00:00:46.100 notice it came up right after the election there's about a thousand to two thousand people there max
00:00:52.720 and without much of a uh planning and kind of there wasn't really much social media attraction
00:01:01.820 on that that's not a bad turnout and this one has been in the works for three weeks now
00:01:08.680 uh the app is doing a pretty good job of spreading the word they even have some buses um one coming
00:01:17.440 from calgary one from red deer a few of these smaller towns as well gp i think too
00:01:22.160 yeah like it's uh i think there are some spots you can buy advanced tickets and there might be a
00:01:28.060 couple spots still left as well so uh if you need a ride there are multiple ways of getting there and
00:01:35.960 that's i think between the buses that's uh a few hundred uh just coming right there so um i i think
00:01:43.040 they want to make sure that it's a good event um mitch sylvester said that they'll have some tables
00:01:49.500 they'll have some merch they'll have a few things they'll have flags um they want everybody to
00:01:54.080 they want a good showing and i think this one's important especially with the forever canada petition
00:02:00.260 uh it's important for us to show the numbers to really get this momentum uh going uh so at this event
00:02:08.880 we have uh mitch sylvester uh jeff rath dennis maudry keith wilson and more speaking so it's going
00:02:17.740 to be a heavy hit loaded event going to be some great talks and uh yeah i guess uh
00:02:25.360 like last time there there's probably going to be some counter protesters but we're going to outnumber
00:02:33.120 them yeah um yeah you got some great photos last time of that but uh yeah the last one they
00:02:40.440 allowed uh loud individuals it was mostly actually loud like it was less counter protester yeah it
00:02:45.420 wasn't like super you know it wasn't violent or anything of course it was just it was mostly
00:02:50.320 indigenous groups and it was kind of right um it was just at the right time that it was sort of
00:02:55.120 boiled over for some um gut reactions about you know what an alberta independence might look like i think
00:03:01.060 um i think maybe some cooler heads have prevailed in that aspect of it and the indigenous aspect of
00:03:07.180 it in the last few months when there's been some more dialogue about that you know we've got some
00:03:10.620 interviews with uh bruce party and with uh jeff jeff rath from the app that's kind of should at least
00:03:18.020 i would hope kind of ease some of those fears from the indigenous groups but we'll see we'll see what
00:03:22.340 kind of um counter protesters we have or protesters i guess there's no yeah this isn't really a protest but
00:03:30.100 yeah the protesters of the rally but yeah the uh i i guess with it being in edmonton and with uh the
00:03:39.180 recent election with how how woke the edmonton city council is it wouldn't surprise me if a few of
00:03:46.880 those same people um would show up to this event and i think they treat independence as a right issue
00:03:55.920 um even though it's not necessarily a right issue but many are proposing a new alberta with codified
00:04:06.780 limits to government woven in and that doesn't sit well with people who are collectivists and i guess
00:04:13.740 that's where we're both really curious to just have some conversations um i know it's it's one thing
00:04:21.000 just to chat with people who agree with you um so yes pull it over just a little bit and uh
00:04:29.640 so independence is best for all our burdens change our minds yeah we're hoping to uh elicit some uh
00:04:40.320 pardon me for my uh messy recording area but uh yeah we're hoping to elicit some conversations where
00:04:47.460 we're gonna hop on the uh hashtag change my mind uh uh sign bandwagon but i i think you know so like
00:04:55.760 we'll we'll have some we'll have some take some video and some photos and stuff but i would hope
00:04:59.900 that if there is any sort of contingent of um really vocal opponents to uh independence out there that
00:05:08.980 they would take the opportunity to maybe you know if they're if they're passionate enough about it to go
00:05:15.040 to an im alberta rally where there's going to be they know that there's going to be a high percentage
00:05:19.600 of independence advocates you would think they would have some strong arguments in favor of their
00:05:25.680 position of staying you know in canada so i i hope it leads to some good conversations we'll see
00:05:30.680 yeah and uh i i think if we're there a little bit before we might be able to get some of those people
00:05:37.480 as they're coming in or even i would love to chat with a forever canada like one of their actual
00:05:44.260 uh canvases or canvassers uh that would be that would be good not sure what to expect if we can
00:05:52.900 get one or two just like articulate people um i would love to be properly challenged on some of
00:05:59.700 these ideas yeah it's so rare it's one thing that we're like oh just because we're so smart and so
00:06:05.580 right about everything but it's it's rare that people who who oppose i'm not even going to say
00:06:11.720 leftist necessarily but just people in general who oppose independence in particular because we
00:06:16.640 were talking a little bit before uh we hit record about how this is not necessarily a left right
00:06:20.880 issue this is a um it's a little bit it's an up it's a top down issue um more than left right but
00:06:27.780 so people who just oppose the idea of independence in general they don't tend to be very interested in
00:06:32.160 uh um just hashing it out you know eloquently in a discussion they seem to be very uh it's a very
00:06:40.980 emotionally driven reaction isn't it yeah if you have the wrong evil ideas why should it be up to
00:06:50.260 debate like that's right there's no reason to even engage with what they consider morally bank
00:06:57.380 bankrupt people which of course we know is like the biggest cope possible right because if you're so
00:07:03.000 if you're so like morally superior to somebody these are softballs yeah it's this should be easy
00:07:09.280 yeah so uh it's an event uh you shouldn't miss uh it's just going to be great people and every time
00:07:19.420 we've gone to any of these events it's just uh great positive atmosphere honestly you can just go up
00:07:26.920 and walk walk to anybody just have a conversation um everyone's super open yeah that's what happened
00:07:32.660 at the we unified conference i was there by myself so we didn't even go together and i was just sitting
00:07:38.180 at tables and had people sit beside me and just strike up conversations like some of the most
00:07:42.540 welcoming and just interesting people and from all all different age groups walks of life uh so yeah
00:07:49.520 i expect the same at this one as well and also if you recall james at the uh the ucp agm
00:07:56.800 last year that we were at we had we sort of you know over the over the few days we sort of developed
00:08:02.020 a reputation for wherever we were sitting we happened to be with a really good group of people
00:08:05.720 but wherever we were sitting people just came and sat and chat chatted and uh um it was really good
00:08:11.720 like it was everything kind of came naturally so we have a good aura so you guys should come see us
00:08:15.900 yeah if you are open and happy to have conversations that will that aura will it will feedback people
00:08:24.000 recognize the vibes will translate yeah so yeah we hope to see all of you there um so it's saturday
00:08:31.500 october 25th 4 p.m till 6 p.m uh that's that's the time so it should still have some sunlight before that
00:08:38.960 might be a cold one but uh yeah i was looking at the weather said it was uh expected a high of 10
00:08:45.420 and a low of three so probably at that time in the afternoon yeah maybe maybe high high single digits
00:08:51.200 kind of mid layers wouldn't hurt yeah or a toque maybe some gloves it'd be good yeah awesome we're
00:08:58.340 all burnt well uh yeah well just wait until the next one's uh middle january we'll get even bit
00:09:05.260 even a larger amount of people out so yeah all right man well hey looking forward to it so
00:09:11.920 hopefully we see some of you guys out and um even if you don't want to uh necessarily be in a debate
00:09:17.240 on camera just you know say hi and we'll we'll hang out um cool thanks as always guys uh i again
00:09:23.640 um we'll put the links to the uh to the event in the description uh and uh yeah make sure you show up
00:09:30.100 yep all right we'll see you there cheers
00:09:35.260 you
00:09:54.400 you
00:09:54.560 you
00:09:55.240 you
