00:02:54.820 according to the paramilitary, duh, parliamentary committee, that a caseworker from the Veterans
00:03:00.240 Affairs Canada, VAC, offered her medical assistance in dying, made, a week after the Veterans Affairs
00:03:06.840 Minister confirmed that at least four other veterans were offered the same thing.
00:03:10.580 Retired Corporal Christine Gauthier, who has been trying to get a wheelchair ramp installed
00:03:15.420 at her home for the past five years, testified on Thursday that a caseworker told her that
00:03:19.660 they could give her assisted dying, even offering to supply the maid equipment for her. 0.71

00:03:51.920 It was just getting too much and unbearable, she said.
00:03:54.920 And the person, in fact, mentioned that point, well, you know, we can assist you with assisted
00:03:59.080 dying now if you'd like.

00:04:10.620 Gauthier, who completed in the 2016 Paralympic Games and the 2016 Evictives Games as a
00:04:15.640 para-canuist, told the committee she sent letters detailing her experience to Prime Minister
00:04:19.840 Justin Trudeau and Veterans Affairs Minister Lawrence McCauley.
00:04:24.020 A spokesperson for McCauley said Veterans Affairs is taking the issue very seriously while
00:04:29.220 adding that providing advice on maid is not a VAC service.
00:04:32.780 Our employees have no role to mandate, recommend it, or raise it.
00:04:36.240 Considerations for maid are the subject of discussions between a patient and their primary
00:04:40.060 care providers to determine appropriateness in each individual context.
00:04:44.580 Erica Lashbrook-Nutzen, Press Secretary for McCauley's office, said in a statement to

00:04:50.340 McCauley's office also told CTV News Veterans Affairs took actions to ensure this doesn't
00:04:54.640 happen again, such as issuing a directive ordering all employees not to provide advice
00:04:58.720 suggestions to veterans on the issue of MAID and implementing mandatory training.
00:05:03.740 When asked about Gauthier's experience being offered MAID, Trudeau called it absolutely
