00:48:18.060 of taken out of our hands that's not even a conversation anymore because it is required by law

00:48:23.420 so when you get to that point you start asking the question well who do we want with uh with a gun on

00:48:30.300 campus and uh what's the purpose and uh as you as you follow the conversation further along uh then you

00:48:38.380 have to ask the question well what kind of gun are they going to carry so um you know we looked at um

00:48:47.660 if you're going to have somebody who and and remember that the ultimate purpose for this individual it

00:48:53.260 grows out of the parkland shooting and and previous shootings so they're here in the the ultimate

00:49:01.020 tragedy situation where you have an active shooter or uh you know assailant who comes on campus threatening

00:49:08.460 faculty staff students and so forth so if you look at that that far end of the spectrum the tip of the

00:49:15.740 spear you know everybody likes to talk about it's a rare occurrence and of course it is rare until it happens

00:49:22.780 and then nobody cares about statistics because it's very real ask the the folks at parkland you know

00:49:29.420 whether the statistics mean anything at all doesn't matter how rare it is it's it's very real so when

00:49:35.100 you look at that uh one thing i said was you know most uh police officers go through their career never

00:49:43.500 firing their weapon in anger and most of them go through their career never actually having been shot at

00:49:48.860 so if uh if we actually had an incident here i i made the comment one day that i i would really

00:49:57.580 rather not have that be the first time that your guard had been shot at because right i've never been in

00:50:05.500 the military right i've never been shot at but i have talked to an awful lot of people who have and i know

00:50:11.260 that and i've counseled some of those folks and i know this is a very life-changing experience uh you kind of

00:50:17.820 figure out who you are how you're going to respond uh it it's just something and i'm thinking you know

00:50:51.420 many of them have been through this uh many of them have come out the other side uh better than

00:50:57.180 they were before some of them uh have difficulty we all know that but uh we looked at it and said

00:51:04.700 well you know if if we made that a criteria for hiring then of course we're going to have people

00:51:10.700 go through psychological evaluations sure they go through all kinds of testing so that's the first

00:51:17.820 step in this journey is having people who understand that in the event of a of a tragedy like this

00:51:28.060 they kind of have an idea of what what happens and and how they're going to respond of course every

00:51:33.980 situation is different but at least they've been through it and they know that it's survival they know

00:51:44.780 that just like it was in in the military bill i have to tell you um as somebody who has to have uh

00:51:51.580 security i just hired a new security uh agent and um they go through all kinds of you know testing and

00:51:59.020 everything else before they're even coming to to um interview with me and uh i had re i just really good

00:52:06.140 choices um in front of me one guy who made it to the final selection uh had had lots of military

00:52:12.380 experience but no actual combat experience and i said to him how do i know that you when the when the

00:52:20.060 gunfire sounds that you're you're going to run in or you're going to do your job and he said well i'm i'm

00:52:28.060 confident of i'm confident of that and he made a good case and he was a really good guy however i didn't

00:52:33.740 have anything to to show that that is what because i don't know what i would do if i'm if i'm being

00:52:38.940 shot at um you can say well i'll pull my gun and i'll no you don't know that combat veterans have been

00:52:47.500 through it and they you know how they're going to react and i commend you for for thinking that way

00:53:01.980 tested qualified combat vets yep that's uh that's uh who we're going with and uh we're very comfortable

00:53:17.180 our our chief of police here who actually has come on our board now uh after all this uh discussion and

00:53:25.020 uh and and and thinking next step you have to look at uh uh all these sros all these guardians of the

00:53:33.660 training program and everything uh equips them with a with a nine millimeter handgun

00:53:39.980 and our campus is quite large we have very long hallways uh it's quite an expanse across the cafeteria

00:53:47.660 things like that that ain't gonna work and uh you know i love to use the the analogy that if you're

00:53:53.900 standing in front of our art gallery looking across the cafeteria it's 151 feet and i know

00:54:00.140 you're a shooter um and and next time you go to the range try taking your nine millimeter and shooting

00:54:51.820 if i'm standing there my guardian next to me and and and for some incredible chance an assailant were

00:54:59.420 to get through that door which had to buzz and everything uh and get past but if they were to get

00:55:04.940 in i have this horia a horrible scenario in my mind that i look at the guardian say hey will you run
