01:07:43.980 You know, when I was hired at De Anza College as a faculty director, it was after many years of working in higher education as a part-timer, if you will.

01:07:57.000 You know, after I got my doctorate, those job offers, you know, for the tenure track just didn't come pouring in like I thought they would.

01:08:03.360 But the one silver lining of the pandemic for me was that, you know, all of these positions opened up and, you know, colleges needed extra hands, if you will.

01:08:15.120 And I was one of those folks that was hired on.

01:08:19.100 And it was a job that, you know, had a job responsibility and title that, you know, everyone had kind of always said, Lee, you need to be like a director somewhere, you know, you don't need to just be in your classroom anymore.

01:08:31.480 You need to share your knowledge with a wider, you know, group of colleagues and impact an institution.

01:08:37.300 And this was a job that provided me with an opportunity to do that position as a faculty member.

01:08:43.960 And so the things that took place almost immediately as I began to do my work let me know that I was in an environment that I had never been in before.

01:08:53.600 And it was like I was in a twilight zone almost.

01:08:58.520 It was immediate within two weeks after, you know, starting starting my work.

01:09:03.080 So when when you took the lead role on DEI, what did you think it was?

01:09:10.440 Yeah. So this was a position to lead a faculty, an institution wide transformation around three topics, which was my office role, equity, social justice and multicultural education.

01:09:23.600 And when I interviewed for it, it was a lengthy process.

01:09:27.040 And, you know, I was very forthright with them about who I was.

01:09:30.800 And they kind of revealed to me some of their pain points.

01:09:33.400 And one of the things they said was the panel said was, you know, the office you will be working for.

01:09:40.140 They're a little too woke. And, you know, that's why we're looking for someone to come in and bring a balance.

01:09:45.240 And I said, well, can you tell me what you mean by woke?

01:09:48.560 Because people use words all the time and they have different meanings for them.

01:09:54.020 And so I'm always someone who's looking to get at the heart of what is someone actually talking about?

01:09:58.420 And they said that, well, when faculty goes to your office, you know, if you're selected as a candidate, they feel uncomfortable.

01:10:12.660 And so a lot of faculty doesn't engage.

01:10:15.560 And I said, well, based on that definition that you're telling me, you know, I'm definitely not woke.

01:11:57.740 And from that, that was the same person who, a couple of weeks after that initial meeting with them, while I was meeting with my team, we had already had some kind of informal meetings, you know.

01:13:36.100 And there, when we hear white supremacists, it's actual like KKK members, white national socialists is what that refers to.

01:13:52.480 And I said, you know, I haven't come in here saying any, calling anyone names, you know, I said, this is, I feel very uncomfortable with what you said.

01:14:00.940 And I just explained to them what I explained to you, where I'm from and how I've heard that use.

01:14:05.260 And everyone on the call had these looks of condemnation as though I was offending the person who said those offensive words to me.

01:15:20.500 You know, I saw they, I started going to their workshops and I kept seeing this slide pop up and it said white supremacy culture characteristics.

01:16:52.080 That's one of their core things that they put, even the academic Senate made a resolution stating that.

01:20:27.560 Our student government basically subverted an effort of the Jewish Student Union to bring forth a definition of anti-Semitism, the IRA definition.

01:20:44.700 And then they made no definition of anti-Semitism, but they condemned Israel.

01:20:49.500 And so that was very disappointing to the students.

01:20:53.580 I also heard about the students being uncomfortable because of anti-Semitic flyering.

01:21:00.100 This is all before I got there, you know, and people were sharing these stories with me and telling me the environment of fear and exclusion that have been created for Jewish students.

01:21:11.080 And I was on, as part of my director responsibilities, a group called the Equity Action Council.

01:21:21.440 To me, equity means fairness, the textbook definition.
