00:00:03.560 Big news. The Supreme Court has struck down affirmative action.
00:00:08.480 Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the 6-3 opinion.
00:00:12.120 He ruled that colleges and universities are no longer allowed to consider race as a factor for admission.
00:00:18.860 The Chief Justice wrote this, quote,
00:00:21.780 The Constitution deals with substance, not shadows,
00:00:24.960 and the prohibition against racial discrimination is leveled at the thing, not the name.
00:00:31.240 A benefit to a student who overcame racial discrimination, for example,
00:00:35.760 must be tied to that student's courage and determination.
00:00:39.340 Or a benefit to a student whose heritage or culture motivated him or her to assume a leadership role
00:00:46.260 or attain a particular goal must be tied to that student's unique ability to contribute to the university.
00:00:53.460 In other words, the student must be treated based on his or her experiences as an individual,

00:01:04.580 The ruling affects 42 states, not including California, Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, Arizona, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, and Idaho.
