00:01:39.820 Amen
00:01:40.820 Yeah
00:01:41.820 Thank you Don Elvir
00:01:42.820 You're welcome
00:01:43.820 Thanks for inviting me and giving me the opportunity to give a testimony of what God did in our
00:01:49.920 life through the intercession of Our Lady and through the intercession of the entire church
00:01:56.480 that is praying for conversion of sinners
00:01:58.160 Amen
00:01:58.820 So well let's start there I want to your your story is so fascinating and I've been privileged
00:02:05.580 to know you for a few years now and I've known you first as a just a photographer who goes
00:02:10.340 around and takes awesome pictures but then when we looked at your background it was mind
00:02:15.580 blowing so let's get into that first of all you were born a catholic raised a catholic where
00:02:20.920 did you start?
00:02:21.920 It's not that simple yeah so my mother is from a catholic family as is my grandmother but
00:02:30.080 my father comes from a muslim family so in my family the the religion was kind of a taboo
00:02:38.840 and I did get catholic education catholic upbringing upbringing from my mother and my grandmother but
00:02:47.480 it was also kept secret because my father wasn't approving of that so I was baptized without
00:02:56.840 him knowing and he is still today very angry about that and I received the first communion
00:03:03.360 also not in my I was in in catholicism class but I didn't receive with all my classmates
00:03:10.840 I received it secretly in another church so that was a part of my upbringing and but you
00:03:17.600 went on to sort of lose the faith a little bit or get into the world right so in case sometimes I
00:03:25.820 forget to say that this when I was not around nine I went to become a priest oh wow but I forgot about
00:03:34.340 that and when I was 12 I completely left the faith I was in sixth grade I started listening to punk rock
00:03:41.180 music uh writing a skateboard like I got in contact with some anarchistic ideas like anarcho-communist and I was in a circle of people who were of that ideology so I just embraced it and at the same time I was thinking about God and how I never had any extraordinary experience of the spiritual realm so I just
00:04:11.160 figured okay that surely doesn't exist that's just something that people imagined when they were primitive and now we're modern we have the science and we can just explain everything we just don't need any like stories for little children how God created the earth right so I just thought of it as something primitive right and superfluous what we just don't need and it is that around so now you're growing up is this when did the interest in photography start
00:04:41.140 so the interest so this becoming an atheist consciously was with 12 okay and at that time I was already very interested in computers yeah and afterwards I learned programming I also went to some contests and also building websites like programming websites front-end back-end everything and for good websites as you know you already you always need good pictures photographs
00:05:07.140 so that's why I was begging my parents for months to get me a digital camera and that's how I started with photography just as a hobby just as something I needed for the websites okay and it developed in high school it developed into a full-time profession so after high school I went I grew up in Croatia in Osijek that's my hometown and after high school I went to Zagreb to study photography
00:05:37.120 cinematography and also I started working in cinematography and also I started working professionally for many magazines newspapers agencies private clients companies like commercial photography all kinds of stuff yeah and you were still a young man and I think you you you got to a level of photography that most people don't get to tell us a little bit about that well photography was a big passion it still is I still am taking photos of the liturgy
00:06:07.120 yeah but I really was driven by photography and I wanted to okay that there was this wish to to have a great career of success but but also I was in love with beauty just the aesthetics the colors composition light it just fascinated me and through photography I found a way to express this fascination
00:06:37.120 I was doing things I was doing things I was doing things I loved and I was paid to do it yeah great so you went you even toured the world doing this kind of thing you you you you were asked to go to different countries yeah accidentally in a sense not only working for for newspapers I started working also for for a car magazine the biggest car magazine in Croatia auto club so they've sent me all around the world practically to take photos
00:07:07.100 photos of new cars and also to drive them and yeah yeah also also not all of them but most of them yeah that's good so where do you get back to faith through all this because you're you're now in the world sort of very successful and the way I mean you've probably fulfilled a lot of people's ultimate dreams to become a kind of celebrity photographer yeah yeah I mean I'm I was on Facebook like 12 years ago already when it was only for for the youth who knew what it all what it was all about
00:07:37.080 and I started like getting a lot of fans on my Facebook page because I was posting I had the old the first iPhone and from the first iPhone on I always was posting photos like live photos from where I was traveling so people would see okay today he's in Spain tomorrow he's back to Zagreb the other day he's in Germany then he's back to America so I was like having a live diary
00:08:02.080 online and a lot of people were like envious not in the negative sense but some some famous people told me wow can I just go travel with you and carry your bags your life is like so exciting exciting and it was yeah it was a fulfillment of my dream yeah I really dreamed about being a photographer being paid to do what I love and and it came about yeah
00:08:29.080 yeah but after some time I started realizing there must be something more
00:08:36.580 wow that that's the problem I you know I wasn't I didn't go that far that I had like millions or I had a private helicopter or something but I had really really everything I wanted in my spare time I was skateboarding snowboarding kitesurfing doing all kinds of stuff I had lots of friends I mean I still consider them friends and I loved
00:08:59.060 them and I and I am contact with them although many of them most of them are not in the faith but I'm praying for them yeah so anyways my my time schedule was full but my heart was empty and that's just started kicking in but of course through the intercession through through the prayer of so many many especially my mother who was praying for me very intensively the last six years before my conversion because a friend
00:09:29.040 of hers told her she should do it and take the example of Saint Monica that was praying for her son Saint Augustine and my mother prayed really a lot for my conversion together with his friend and I am eternally grateful to them and to the entire church for their prayers because I wouldn't have converted if people didn't pray for me
00:09:52.620 wow what did that conversion look like how does someone go from celebrity photographer to even thinking about entering religious life
00:10:02.480 even today when I think about it it looks impossible yeah because as said I was totally into this leftist mentality like anarcho communist I was playing in a punk rock band for nine years
00:10:19.920 like against like against authority against the church everything I hated the church
00:10:24.120 I I mocked the idea of the existence of God like people who would say they believe in God I would just mock them practically and
00:10:34.160 put myself over them and consider them primitive
00:10:37.660 yeah so it's completely impossible that a human could have convinced me to to embrace the idea of the existence of God and then converting to to the one true faith
00:10:51.640 yeah
00:10:52.040 so this is a work of God
00:10:54.140 yeah
00:10:54.580 that's what I wanted to say with this whole
00:10:57.060 absolutely but how does this unravel did you see something hear something what what what happened here
00:11:04.340 uh the the way to to the faith was a twofold first when I was 25 I had an experience of prayer where this friend the same friend who told my mother to pray for me like six years before
00:11:20.120 I told my mother uh at one point I would like to meet him because I see he helps you a lot through prayer and I'd like to meet him just to thank him
00:11:30.500 but actually uh I was very curious I wanted to to see if uh if this spiritual world really exists
00:11:39.440 because when I was 12 I decided no it doesn't exist but I heard stories also from some friends who who went to some uh retreats
00:11:49.220 yeah and uh there were some uh demonic manifestations
00:11:53.620 oh uh when during the prayer or deliverance
00:11:56.800 yeah so I was like wow that really exists okay but I can't believe until I see it myself
00:12:01.360 like saint thomas
00:12:02.960 yeah uh who who was doubting so was I
00:12:06.560 yeah and when this first experience with uh
00:12:10.780 mio mio barata is the name of this friend
00:12:13.160 okay happened uh he's a lay person by the way
00:12:16.560 but he was just praying for for a person who had some spiritual problems let's say
00:12:20.660 and when the demons started reacting through this person
00:12:23.680 I just had to admit it exists
00:12:27.180 so did you see demons actually the the first uh I mean you cannot see demons themselves they're invisible
00:12:34.360 right they're their spirits but you can see the manifestation uh in the material world
00:12:40.480 concretely uh through persons who are in some way oppressed or possessed that's very uh uh um rare
00:12:48.080 yeah but anyway the the first time I experienced it through a phone call so it was just uh auditive
00:12:54.240 yeah and late auditory yeah and later on I saw it as well when I went to some retreats etc
00:13:00.800 so basically it just sounded weird on the phone or like freaking you're just weird or you gotta
00:13:05.920 well the thing is uh I already heard about it from some friends and I just needed a confirmation
00:13:12.160 like to experience it live so I didn't really question it okay it was like okay my lord and my god
00:13:19.920 yeah but I didn't start a uh sacramental life and that's why after this first experience I stopped
00:13:28.160 with a lot of sins like oh oh god it really exists I I have to like uh just get a little bit yeah yeah
00:13:34.480 I have to re-embrace the ten commands the ten commandments when I when I was 12 I consciously uh
00:13:41.520 said no this doesn't this doesn't apply to me I can do what I want so at this point I just had to
00:13:47.200 revert like to the age of 12 I think but I didn't start praying I didn't start going to holy mass I
00:13:53.600 didn't confess oh wow so three or four months afterwards I just fell back to the old sins yeah
00:13:59.600 but through the prayer of so many uh one year uh total from this first experience one year afterwards
00:14:08.080 uh I went I was googling about the faith I just couldn't uh live in sin anymore it was just bugging
00:14:14.640 me so hard I just couldn't not to convert the grace of god was so intensive uh as said I was googling
00:14:22.160 about the faith uh I didn't know any priests I didn't have uh really friends who were faithful
00:14:28.400 Catholics uh where were you living at this point I was living in Zagreb in the capital of Croatia
00:14:34.240 and still with your mom or no no no no I was uh when I moved to Zagreb when I was 20 started studying
00:14:39.440 and working professionally I was living uh with friends or alone yeah yeah so I was living alone at that
00:14:44.880 time anyways uh I googled about Medjugorje I know it's controversial it's tough but for me as a complete
00:14:52.160 ignorant this was the only thing I knew that some people go there and have conversion yeah
00:14:57.200 so that's all I only knew and uh end of December 2011 I went there I came in the evening it was empty
00:15:03.920 there were no pilgrims or anything it was like minus five celsius that's that's under under the
00:15:09.360 freezing point yeah it was so cold and I just went around the whole night searching for these pilgrim
00:15:15.760 routes and I was praying the rosary which I knew from my childhood uh the whole night and I was
00:15:22.800 finished at like 3 a.m and then I kind of took a nap at a at a terrace of a bar or something I just
00:15:28.880 waited for the church to open and then finally at 5 or 6 a.m when when a friar for 6 and 5 was open
00:15:34.880 the church I just grabbed him and went to confession and confessed after 15 years wow and this was a new
00:15:43.760 start from this point on I'm a new man I've become a new man completely at the beginning of course I was still
00:15:53.600 skateboarding I mean two two weeks afterwards I went to Africa uh Cabo Verde I was surfing there two
00:16:00.160 weeks or something uh so externally I was the same man but internally I was a completely new man wow through
00:16:09.440 the grace of God well absolutely but your your life sort of keeps on rolling but where did the
00:16:15.520 religious life come from I mean this is a radical change to think that just in 2011 I guess maybe for
00:16:21.200 the really young people that means well that's like ancient history but for me that's like yesterday
00:16:24.720 so yeah you know 2011 and and here you are like this and in Rome so where did you go from there
00:16:32.880 so the thing is maybe I should also mention in 2011 I traveled 120 000 kilometers that's around 80 000
00:16:42.080 miles in this one year as a photographer so uh in January I was in Detroit for the car show you know
00:16:47.840 from Europe and then I toured all over the Europe uh I went then in October uh the Chevrolet paid the uh
00:16:57.360 trip for for a journalist and me to to to spend a month in America travel the whole route 66 actually
00:17:04.720 more from San Diego to New York wow I did that I went to Africa two times just for kite surfing
00:17:11.840 uh with my Vespa I have a small Vespa that's like a very small scooter like 50 cc it goes like 30 miles an
00:17:19.120 hour with that little puppy I went from Croatia to North Cap and back that's the most northern
00:17:27.040 point of Europe you can like like the the northern tip of Europe there was 10 000 kilometers I think
00:17:33.200 it's six and a half thousand miles it was a month-long expedition practically so and this was the year
00:17:41.040 you know when I was uh this was the final year before the conversion came so it was like an explosion
00:17:47.200 of everything of worldliness of searching yeah and I didn't find anything until I found God in the
00:17:54.720 sacraments in his church wow wow yeah and now now to come to come back to your question how come I'm
00:18:02.000 in a religious habit yeah uh well I didn't expect that I had no idea as I mentioned when I was nine
00:18:09.120 I wanted to be a priest but I completely forgot about that even after the conversion I didn't remember of
00:18:13.680 that and uh that was 2011 when I converted like cento per cento 100 percent and I just started going
00:18:23.200 regularly to holy mass every day praying the rosary uh at least three a day that was my goal I didn't
00:18:29.280 manage to do every day but that was the goal and regular confession and also I went to some retreats
00:18:37.280 and I was just given the advice to pray uh for God's will for him to show me what does he want from me
00:18:43.680 yeah because I had in a way a luxury conversion nothing bad happened to me you know I didn't have any
00:18:50.640 uh any tragedies in my life I had everything in the worldly uh sense but my heart was empty and God gave me
00:19:01.120 the faith and gave me the perspective of the eternal life so so I could see this life is completely uh it's
00:19:08.320 not completely irrelevant but in the face of eternity uh it's it's so uh insignificant to attach yourself to
00:19:17.600 anything which is temporal which is passing yeah so this perspective towards eternity made it very
00:19:24.640 easy for me to commit my life to God and I wanted to start a family uh because I was 25 I saw people
00:19:31.520 around me already having their third child maybe or or getting ordained to the priesthood and I just
00:19:38.560 converted and I wasn't even at the beginning because I just didn't know which way to go yeah and I told this
00:19:44.800 to a priest at a at a confession and he gave me some real good advice and after this confession immediately
00:19:54.160 afterwards there was a holy mass uh and and I uh went there uh received holy communion went back to the
00:20:01.840 pews just prayed in silence on my knees and uh I I gave my whole life to our lord at his disposal and and
00:20:11.040 asked him just to uh uh reveal to me his will a concrete will for my life what should I do which way
00:20:20.000 should I go and he just made it very clear to me it wasn't like a voice it was more like a thought just
00:20:28.640 just this one sentence I created you to become a priest wow and that was it that that was it I just didn't
00:20:39.520 need any clarification I didn't need any time to think about it because I said yes in advance I just
00:20:45.680 wanted to see the the content of God's will when the mass finished I just went out of the church I
00:20:52.320 called my mother told her okay Jesus called me to become a priest I'm going to a monastery and she was
00:20:58.000 like what's going on because she was praying for the conversion she wasn't expecting this but of course
00:21:03.440 she embraced it and she was uh extraordinary happy and also I called this friend uh Mio who who prayed
00:21:11.040 played a big role in my conversion uh to to ask him if he could get me in touch with canons regular
00:21:18.640 that I've met through him in Germany because in my country I really didn't know uh any monasteries
00:21:25.280 and I didn't even know that there's a difference between uh religious priests and uh diocesan priests
00:21:30.960 I had no idea that there's also like uh seminary I could go to so this monastery in Germany was the
00:21:37.760 only thing I knew and I just wanted to go there and a few months later I really did go there they
00:21:43.680 were also kind of like what what does he want like who is he because they're all German I'm the only
00:21:48.640 non-German I'm Croatian yeah uh there but they were really kind to me and they gave me a chance
00:21:54.400 and uh loving languages so much uh I didn't have uh uh any troubles learning German yeah and I really
00:22:03.360 stayed there went through post postulancy novitiate yeah first vows solemn vows and now I'm solemnly
00:22:11.760 professed canon regular wow in Germany still in Germany but I am here in Rome studying they've sent
00:22:18.560 me to study at the angelicum which I think is the best university in Rome I've been here for three
00:22:27.600 semesters so one and a half years let's say so I mean it's so fascinating your your life has taken this
00:22:35.600 unbelievable course of everything and you're now back in Rome did you ever come to Rome before you
00:22:41.760 when you were a photographer interestingly enough yes when I was 15 on a school uh trip excursion how
00:22:48.800 you yeah exactly we were in Italy and out of protest because I was such a militant atheist I didn't even
00:22:57.920 want to enter the Saint Peter's Basilica I was at Saint uh at the uh the Saint Peter's Square I was taking
00:23:04.800 photos because already then I was into photography but I didn't want to enter because I really hated the
00:23:10.880 church wow and look at me now so let's let's talk for a second about um our lady I know you're really
00:23:18.880 devoted to our lady you're praying the rosary where did she fit into this story well uh although I mentioned
00:23:27.440 Medjugorje which is like there's pro and contra but it is about our lady yeah which is allegedly just
00:23:35.200 calling for conversion for prayer and uh I've I have this such a strong connection to our lady
00:23:42.320 and I am thankful to her for my conversion because she obviously played a huge role and my mother
00:23:48.000 consecrated me to our lady when I was a little child yeah I had this uh how do you I don't know the
00:23:53.600 English word that the yellow uh the yellow uh fiber um scapula no no no it's this uh the disease uh
00:24:02.720 little children have just for a few days newborns uh I forgot it doesn't matter it doesn't and when I was
00:24:11.200 a newborn uh this disease was like uh taking not five days but it it was for for a month yeah and the
00:24:17.680 doctor said this is too much uh yeah this is too much uh he's going to have some serious uh mental
00:24:26.960 and and physical disabilities because in this stage of uh development that that's crucial so just
00:24:33.600 be prepared and my mother didn't know what to do and a real religious sister told her just consecrate
00:24:40.160 him to our lady uh and that's what she did uh to our lady of Medjugorje because uh that was at the
00:24:46.640 beginning i was i'm born 86 that was completely in the beginning at that time and that's why that's
00:24:51.920 one of the idea why i came back to Medjugorje to uh to have the conversion and to confess yeah but also
00:24:58.960 more importantly the the spirituality of uh saint louis de montfort uh and and his uh true devotion to mary
00:25:07.040 that inspired me like on so many levels and uh i'm trying to live this devotion in his spirit beautiful
00:25:15.440 so when you compare your life now i mean somebody might ask you like you were on top of the world
00:25:20.960 or at least you could have headed to the top of the world because you were young and already a famous
00:25:26.160 photographer and you were just on an upward track and you sort of gave it all up and now you're here
00:25:31.600 and you're you're you're dressed like this and you can't get married you're you're confessed professed
00:25:38.240 canon there's no more marriage in your future you can't have that wife and family now exactly so how do you
00:25:44.640 feel about that i mean is isn't that the are you sad about that or you think you had the life that
00:25:49.920 everybody thinks is the glory life and now you're just here and you're just not able to have a family
00:25:55.200 so what what would you respond uh externally it is the glory life but only externally internally it isn't
00:26:03.520 that's the problem so so i'm not saying it's it's not externally it is but internally it it's just not
00:26:10.000 fulfilling only god can fulfill your heart our heart is uh i don't know the english quote of saint
00:26:17.920 augustine our heart is my heart is made for you it's i can't say i can't say yeah yeah so we we cannot
00:26:25.040 rest until we rest in god and after this gift of of the faith that god gave me and this perspective of the
00:26:34.720 eternal life i just uh it's just obvious to me that everything uh earthly worldly is passing it may
00:26:45.360 be glorious but sick transit gloria mundi it just it just goes away very very quickly and it's completely
00:26:53.280 logical when you have this perspective of eternal life to do anything what is in accordance to god's will
00:27:01.360 because that's the synonym for the best possible thing you can do and since god gave me this very
00:27:08.480 clear information i could i should become a priest i just went and did it yeah i'm a very logical guy you
00:27:15.520 know so so that that's that's logic behind it it's it is also very emotional it is very emotional because
00:27:23.120 i am very serious about the faith but i know i'm a sinner and i i should start with myself i cannot change the
00:27:30.240 others i must work on myself and sacrificing uh family life of course it's a sacrifice because that
00:27:38.720 is our natural vocation we have this natural vocation but god has a supernatural vocation for some people
00:27:47.440 who then sacrifice this natural vocation in order to be able to fulfill this supernatural vocation through
00:27:53.920 the priesthood consecrated life in its fullness to be undivided and to uh uh be uh god's property yeah
00:28:04.560 one of the things that you didn't lose though was your photography your love for photography
00:28:10.960 and it's been such a blessing to life side voice the family all these different and the masses that you
00:28:17.120 photograph the the beauty of the liturgy that you're able to bring out mostly traditional liturgy just
00:28:23.280 unbelievable you're and your photographs when i saw them i was like whoa where did that come from
00:28:29.040 and so you've been able to use your god-given talent i mean really had a a have a talent for
00:28:35.600 this that's that's very very rare and it's beautiful to see that you're able to use this nonetheless but
00:28:42.000 as a religious as a professed religious you're still doing it i am just using a talent god gave me
00:28:47.280 yeah and not just uh because i have to i love it i still love it as i told you but in the end i am
00:28:53.360 a completely a useless servant i'm not doing nothing special i'm just using the talent god gave me and
00:28:59.440 this love for beauty and now uh actually during my studies i learned that that god is the absolute beauty
00:29:07.280 that's what actually attracted me to photography this is these aesthetics it's the beauty of god that
00:29:13.040 that that uh that is behind the creative world so i'm just bringing recording documenting something
00:29:20.240 that already exists through the camera lens onto the sensor and sharing this beauty this god's beauty
00:29:27.200 with others beautiful you had some closing words especially for young people i think a lot of young
00:29:32.720 people are going to be attracted to your story what would that be to they if they're on the fence like
00:29:37.920 you or right in the world like you uh and then just watching this because it this looks so crazy um what
00:29:44.480 would you say to them to the young people especially don't be afraid our lord has conquered the world world
00:29:53.840 our lady is so mighty satan can't even pronounce her name he is so afraid of her just stay faithful
00:30:02.720 don't worry just hope pray and don't worry and the life of sanctity striving toward towards sanctity is
00:30:12.080 the only normal life every every other dogma you're getting from the world every other uh like precept
00:30:22.400 you're getting from from the world from the media is irrelevant and very often wrong just follow
00:30:30.960 what our lord told us and what what our holy mother church teaches us and you'll be fine so i've
00:30:39.280 talked to a lot of young people they'll answer you say well okay i a lot of guys will say i just can't be
00:30:46.000 holy there's no way i i'm i'm addicted to lots of stuff i can't get there i just can't do that that's
00:30:51.840 impossible okay but admitting it is is the first level admit it go to confession because confessing the
00:31:00.560 same things all the time that's the actual uh saintity that that's the hard part something oh i'm
00:31:09.200 confessing all the the same things all the time it's it's useless it doesn't make any no that's the
00:31:14.480 point that you're uh doing it all over all over again and believe me you will either stop sinning or
00:31:23.200 stop confessing and the same applies to the rosary pray the rosary a lot a lot of girls will say look
00:31:29.920 i am i try to be good and everybody ignores me friends don't talk to me and the only way i can
00:31:36.400 be cool is to do the kind of things they're doing i've got to have a boyfriend i've got to have this
00:31:40.720 and that i've got to put my pictures out on the internet and i got to make it look good and sexy
00:31:44.880 otherwise no one pays attention to me i'm lonely exactly that is true that is true externally on the
00:31:52.800 outside but uh get to know god better get to know uh him how much he loves you uh get get together with
00:32:02.560 catholic friends go to uh uh to a to a church where uh faithful catholics are gathering who are still
00:32:10.160 holding the the faith and um don't don't care so much about what other people think because they can
00:32:19.440 save you only our lord can so that that's the important thing what does god think so don't go with
00:32:26.400 the flow though don't go with the flow you you don't have to be a part of the mainstream be a saint
00:32:32.320 well you heard it right here from don elvir uh just absolutely amazing this former celebrity
