00:00:58.840 I guess it was done in the hopes that there would be some lessening of the persecution of Chinese Catholics.

00:01:04.500 So to make an official agreement, it was brokered by former so-called Cardinal McCarrick,

00:01:12.380 many of whom, many of you know him as the sexual abuser.

00:01:16.520 But he brokered this deal for Pope Francis with the Vatican in China, and it is a horrendous deal.

00:01:23.300 Let me give you some of the expert testimony on it.

00:01:26.260 First of all, from Stephen Mosher, who most of you know as the great researcher on China

00:01:33.100 who first discovered the horrific one-child policy.

00:01:36.880 He, of course, is a close collaborator with LifeSite News.

00:01:39.600 Here's what he said.

00:01:40.860 And these are quotes from Steve Mosher in an article he did for LifeSite News that you can go check out.

00:01:45.760 But he's speaking of President Xi Jinping.

00:01:50.300 He said, as he made clear in a speech on religion in December 2021,

00:01:54.620 Xi Jinping intends to bring every religion in China, Catholic, Christian, Muslim, Taoist, and Buddhist,

00:02:01.260 under the direct control of the Chinese Communist Party and make them serve its purposes.

00:02:06.520 Any religion that does not teach its members to love the party and socialism is a backward religion engaged in illegal religious activities, Xi said,

00:02:20.280 and will be stomped out.

00:02:23.140 Religions should only conduct their activities in approved places of worship

00:02:27.500 and must not interfere with social life or the education of the young.

00:02:31.980 So, as Mosher continues,

00:02:34.580 it goes without saying that Xi Jinping intends to crush the underground church

00:02:39.980 and is using the Sino-Vatican Agreement,

00:02:43.400 and that's the name of the agreement, the Sino-Vatican Agreement, for this purpose.

00:02:47.400 But it is also clear that by preventing the faith from being passed on to the next generation,

00:02:52.520 by forbidding young people to go to church,

00:02:54.920 he intends the same fate for Catholicism in general.

00:02:58.080 In the meantime, the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association,

00:03:01.600 which is the Chinese Communist Party-approved church,

00:03:05.080 will be used to promote the Chinese Communist Party's political goals and ideology,

00:03:10.740 as well as core leader Xi himself.

00:03:14.180 The Sino-Vatican Agreement,

00:03:15.920 instead of leading to a new birth of religious freedom for Catholics in China,

00:03:20.140 is instead being used by the CCP for its own purposes.

00:03:24.460 And these are, and this is Steve Mosher,

00:03:28.060 it is now clear to decapitate the church hierarchy by slow-rolling the appointment of bishops,

00:03:33.420 while at the same time slowly strangling Catholicism itself out of existence.

00:03:39.940 Mosher concludes,

00:03:43.380 and that was Steve Mosher,

00:03:45.120 and this is, his opinion and take on this, of course, is very, very well informed,

00:03:49.180 but it's also corroborated by a member of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom,

00:03:56.300 who has said he is tremendously disappointed

00:03:59.240 by what the renewed Sino-Vatican deal will mean for Chinese Catholics.

00:04:04.200 His name is Stephen Schneck,

00:04:06.100 he's a member of the USCIRF,

00:04:09.100 and he told Crux Media Outlet,

00:04:11.620 and I quote,

00:04:12.080 I think that these agreements have not produced any improvement in religious freedom for Catholics in China,

00:04:18.360 and I think that the Holy See should really rethink its decision to dance with Xi on this whole business.

00:04:27.280 Schneck added,

00:04:27.980 So, taking this issue with the Vatican and allowing the CCP to have a say in the choice of bishops for Chinese Catholics,

00:04:56.580 Schneck asked,

00:04:58.700 Who are the pastors of their faith?

00:05:01.300 Do they come from the Church of the State?

00:05:04.620 So, Schneck himself is a Catholic,

00:05:06.540 and he was appointed to the Commission on International Religious Freedom

00:05:09.720 after more than two decades of experience in the field.

00:05:13.940 Now, this group that he's with,

00:05:15.360 the U.S. group,

00:05:16.240 this U.S. government sanctioned group,

00:05:18.360 this USCIRF,

00:05:20.460 is an independent, bipartisan federal commission,

00:05:23.700 which closely monitors issues of religious freedom throughout the world,

00:05:27.840 and it publishes an annual report on recommendations to the U.S. government and Congress.

00:05:33.860 Now, the Commission's report in April of 2022

00:05:36.360 recommended that the U.S. re-designate China as a country of particular concern

00:05:40.800 for engaging in systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom

00:05:45.400 as defined by the International Religious Freedom Act.

00:05:48.540 Now, the key findings on China were that in 2021,

00:05:54.320 religious freedom continued to deteriorate.

00:05:58.360 The government continued to vigorously implement its cynicization of religion policy

00:06:02.640 and demand that religious groups and their adherents

00:06:06.180 support the Chinese Communist Party's rule and ideology.

00:06:09.840 Now, this is right from the report.

00:06:11.880 Throughout 2021,

00:06:12.700 the State Administration for Religious Affairs,

00:06:15.200 a government agency under direct control of the CCP's United Front Work Department,

00:06:20.440 and other agencies issued new legal measures imposing further restrictions on clergy,

00:06:26.500 religious schools, and religious content on the Internet.

00:06:29.840 Although China recognizes Buddhism, Catholicism, Islam, Protestantism, Taoism,

00:06:34.540 adherents of groups with perceived foreign influence,

00:06:37.660 such as underground Catholics,

00:06:39.280 house church Protestants, Uyghurs, and other Muslims,

00:06:42.320 and Tibetan Buddhists,

00:06:44.340 and those from other religious movements,

00:06:46.600 such as Fulangang and the Church of the Almighty God,

00:06:50.780 are especially vulnerable to persecution,

00:06:54.560 says the report.

00:06:55.660 Despite the Vatican-China agreement on bishops' appointments,

00:06:59.140 authorities continue to harass and detain underground Catholic priests

00:07:03.280 who refuse to join the state-controlled Catholic association,

00:07:06.100 such as Bishop Joseph Zhang Weizhou of Shijang, Hibai Province.

00:07:15.180 Moreover, authorities throughout China routinely raided churches,

00:07:20.480 confiscated religious materials.

00:07:22.440 The government also continued to demolish church buildings and crosses,

00:07:26.460 including the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Xinjiang,

00:07:30.200 under its Sinicization of Religion campaign.

00:07:33.820 The report noted that China is officially an atheist state.

00:07:37.180 The CCP, whose members are banned from believing in or practicing any faith,

00:07:42.880 has long repressed religious freedom,

00:07:45.120 and in recent years,

00:07:46.280 it has become increasingly hostile toward religion,

00:07:49.980 implementing campaigns to Sinicize Islam, Tibetan Buddhism, and Christianity,

00:07:54.180 to rid them of alleged foreign influences.

00:07:57.900 These policies require religious groups to support the CCP,

00:08:01.180 that's the Chinese Communist Party rule,

00:08:03.460 and its political objectives,

00:08:05.380 including by altering their religious teachings

00:08:07.620 to conform to CCP ideology and policy.

00:08:11.060 Both registered and unregistered religious groups and individuals

00:08:14.680 who run afoul of the CCP

00:08:16.500 face harassment, detention, arrest, imprisonment, and other abuses.

00:08:22.040 And then, there is Cardinal Zen,

00:08:25.340 who is arrested by the Chinese Communist Party authorities

00:08:28.380 under the terms of China's draconian 2020 national security law.

00:08:33.240 He was the retired Archbishop of Hong Kong,

00:08:36.720 and the number one person whom the Vatican used to rely on

00:08:40.020 for all things to do with China,

00:08:42.320 led the policy on China's relationship,

00:08:45.880 or Vatican's relationship with China,

00:08:47.740 under Popes John Paul II and Benedict,

00:08:50.000 but was totally sidelined by Pope Francis,

00:08:53.880 not even shown the new Vatican agreement with China.

00:08:59.200 He was found guilty, that is, by the Communist Party,

00:09:05.300 for an offense, and was arrested.

00:09:09.480 He was fined some $4,000.

00:09:13.360 And Zen and his fellow defendants had pled not guilty.

00:09:17.240 However, Reuters reported at the time

00:09:19.320 that he could face yet further prosecution

00:09:21.860 as police investigate, and I quote,

00:09:24.200 an accusation of collusion with foreign forces.

00:09:28.460 Zen's travel to Rome for Benedict's funeral,
