After the 2018 "Sacred Deal" between China and the Vatican, Pope Francis and Xi Jinping struck a deal to allow Catholics in China to practice their faith without fear of persecution. The deal was brokered by Cardinal John McCarrick, the disgraced former cardinal who served as Pope John Paul II's proxy for the Roman Catholic Church in China.
