00:00:36.340 In Africa, there are a few traditional masses,
00:00:40.040 but there are few and far between.
00:00:41.740 They really don't have much of tradition in Africa.
00:00:45.760 When it's tried, it's usually resisted.
00:00:50.960 And this has been a real difficulty for all those who struggle and want it.
00:00:55.420 Now, there is a seminarian, then priest,
00:00:58.040 who during seminary was introduced to the Latin mass,
00:01:00.500 actually by books by Michael Davis sent to him,
00:01:03.660 and requested permission to go as a priest once I think he was in his sabbatical year
00:01:09.340 to try and go and learn the traditional mass.
00:01:12.060 Anyway, he did learn it eventually on his own sabbatical
00:01:15.140 and came back and asked the bishop if he could celebrate the traditional mass
00:01:19.320 for people there in Nigeria.
00:01:22.360 And basically, he was forbidden.
00:01:25.040 He was trying to celebrate the Novus Ordo mass in a most conservative way possible and so on.
00:01:32.360 But there was resistance there too.
00:01:35.200 And he felt called to enter tradition,
00:01:39.100 especially since, you know, Pope Benedict had allowed for it already in 2007 with Simorum Pontificum.
00:01:44.160 And these situations are tragic.
00:01:46.720 And they're not only in America or Canada or Europe.
00:01:51.540 They're also in Africa.
00:01:52.960 So there's a hunger, a hunger for the traditional mass in Africa.
00:01:56.820 And believe it or not, they've got, they've set up,

00:02:01.420 but there are people flocking to seminaries that they've started to teach the traditional mass

00:05:02.560 Currently, we have 22 seminarians,
00:05:03.720 seminarians, and we have 19 ladies or sisters
00:05:07.820 trying to try out the vocation
00:05:10.400 in the Catholic tradition.
00:05:13.800 Now, it's funny that you mentioned
00:05:15.500 that the deep church is there
00:05:17.660 and the deep state is there
00:05:18.760 because from our side of the world,
00:05:23.220 it's a very different picture.
00:05:24.960 When we go to Africa,
00:05:26.900 when I was just in,
00:05:28.520 just late last year,
00:05:29.580 I was in Kenya and Uganda.
00:05:30.860 I was stunned by how faithful the bishops are
00:05:34.200 on the life and family issues.
00:05:37.280 Whereas so many of our bishops,
00:05:39.480 particularly on the issue of homosexuality,
00:05:41.980 are unfaithful,
00:05:43.320 are just giving in on it,
00:05:45.140 are not willing to talk about it,
00:05:46.920 not willing to preach the truth on it.
00:05:48.540 Your bishops in Africa
00:05:49.520 were all about preaching the truth.
00:05:51.660 Now, South Africa is a different story,
00:05:53.320 but all of the regular Africa is solid.
00:05:57.860 The whole church preaches the truth

00:06:05.440 So, it's not an issue for our people down here,

00:06:25.800 They're trying to explore such means.

00:07:15.240 So, but they have vestiges of it.

00:07:23.960 One of the interesting things
00:07:24.980 about Africa that I noticed anyway
00:07:26.980 is that among these churches,
00:07:31.140 which are oh so faithful
00:07:32.320 on life and family issues,
00:07:33.660 the liturgy is somewhat impoverished.
00:07:38.960 It's very cultural.
00:07:40.700 So, it uses a lot of
00:07:41.720 the cultural expression,
00:07:42.800 which might be used
00:07:43.640 in all sorts of ways during prayer.
00:07:47.320 But the understanding
00:07:49.140 of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
00:07:50.940 is it's just that,
00:07:51.900 a Holy Sacrifice.
00:07:52.900 And that's why the whole
00:07:53.700 traditional Mass movement
00:07:54.580 sort of retained
00:07:55.500 what it should be.
00:07:57.420 We're present at the sacrifice of Jesus.
00:07:59.320 And so, that was sort of,
00:08:03.600 you know, apart from
00:08:05.140 a kind of periods of worship or prayer

00:08:10.040 all sorts of cultural expression.
00:08:12.500 The Mass, however,
00:08:13.900 is the sacrifice of Calvary.
00:08:15.980 So, it was a different thing.

00:08:26.080 of traditional playing out in Africa?
00:08:27.480 Africans were so fortunate.

00:08:41.100 only brought up the mass in 1969

00:16:04.580 And that is when many of them came to know the traditional Catholic Mass, because that
00:16:07.940 was the only Mass I was waiting for them during that period.
00:16:10.780 So in 2020, on the Feast of Our Lady, the Feast of Our Lady, the Feast of Our Lady, October 8th, that was when I had my last Novus Odo Mass.
00:16:26.780 Because I told the Bishop, I want to, from henceforth, saying that the control that they have over the Novus Odo Mass is too strong.
00:16:37.100 And in the traditional Catholic Mass, it is very, very easy to do the right thing, to do the right thing, to do what our Lord wants.
00:16:46.520 So I prayed to Our Lady, Our Lady now gave me the inspiration and said, this is the Mass from henceforth.
00:16:53.120 So I told the Bishop that this is the Mass I want to celebrate for the people from henceforth.
00:16:56.680 And from that time to today, 2003, that was the Mass I've been celebrating.
00:17:02.580 In 2023, that's the Mass I want to give to the people, if it permits me.
00:17:09.280 But currently, I don't have the permission to give to the people, so I'm like a vagus.
00:17:14.800 What has become of your parishioners who were with you before?
00:17:19.860 Lagos Act Diocese invited me.
00:17:22.000 It's a bigger diocese than my diocese.
00:17:24.380 My diocese is a smaller diocese in Nigeria.
00:17:26.340 But Lagos Act Diocese is a metropolitan diocese, the former capital of Nigeria.
00:17:30.860 So the faithful opted for the Mass, and they asked that they would like me.
00:17:38.620 They told their Archbishop, Martins, Adewali Martins, they would like Father Samuel to come and help them with the Mass.
00:17:45.040 So the Archbishop called on me, His Grace, and asked me if I can come down and help with the traditional Catholic Mass in his act diocese.
00:17:53.860 So I opted for that.
00:17:55.460 I went to see him, but he told me, Father, would you give communion in the hands?
00:18:00.860 And still celebrate the traditional Catholic Mass for the faithful who wants it.
00:18:04.940 I said to him, in conscience, I cannot administer the Lord on the hand.
00:18:11.800 And he was not comfortable with that.
00:18:15.140 So he said, Father, you cannot walk in my diocese.
00:18:19.560 I said, thank you, Your Grace.

00:18:22.740 I came back home, still insisted with my bishop that I would like to celebrate the traditional Catholic Mass for the faithful.
00:18:29.860 I almost wanted to resign from the priests, from the active ministry.
00:18:37.740 But I was advised not to do that.
00:18:39.940 So currently, my case is still being studied by the diocese, and we are hopeful that they will give me a hearing so that if I have the right to celebrate the traditional Catholic Mass for the people, then fair and good.

00:20:13.620 Because we have, you know, been told by Bishop Snyder himself that where this is forbidden, it can't be.
00:20:22.280 So you're under a kind of disobedience, but it's not really, because you're obeying a higher authority.
00:20:29.560 Because this Mass from time immemorial was allowed, and it was reinforced by Pope Benedict XVI in Semorum Pontificum in 2007.
00:20:41.020 He made it so that priests don't even have to request from their bishops the ability to say this Mass because it's available perpetually.
00:20:49.080 How has that played out in your life to this date?
00:20:51.540 What goes on then with your parishioners or those who are with you for the Mass?
00:20:56.860 So those who come for the Mass, I told them clearly, I have no right to take care of your soul.

00:21:07.160 And some of them actually did, and the bishops, sorry, the bishops, and some of the parish, the priests, tell them, go away.
