00:02:09.900 You have pointed the way to defense of the freedom of worship in a way that really, for

00:02:17.660 most of America, for most of Europe, has been very alien.

00:02:21.520 You were forceful, of course, charitable, but you were forceful.

00:02:25.460 And I'd like to hear about that.

00:02:26.740 But first of all, tell us a little bit about yourself.

00:02:32.460 Well, I grew up in Poland, as you can tell by my accent, behind the Iron Curtain.

00:02:37.620 So I have seen firsthand the atrocities that were done to my people in my country, you know,

00:02:44.780 by the Soviets.

00:02:46.220 When Europe was and the whole world was celebrating the victory over the Nazis, Poland was taken

00:02:52.020 over by the Soviets. 0.58

00:02:53.780 And I'm telling you, socialism and communism is like a black plague. 0.96

00:02:59.020 It destroys everything that touches like a cancer.

00:03:02.240 So my country was ravished, destroyed.

00:03:04.380 People were depressed, people turned into alcohol for hope and faith.

00:03:12.220 Faith was the number one thing that was holding the people together.

00:03:18.180 And John Paul II, of course, coming to Poland and praying.

00:03:21.960 I had privilege to do a Christian festival, March for Jesus, in the very place where John

00:03:28.220 Paul II said, God, the Holy Spirit, come and touch this land, this ground.

00:03:34.500 And I actually quoted him on the same spot.

00:03:39.560 Millions of people were touched.

00:03:42.640 Millions of people were encouraged.

00:03:45.080 And after many, many years, after decades of Soviets destroying our country, finally, 0.99

00:03:50.260 1981, Polish people took to the streets.

00:03:53.520 They had courage.

00:03:54.680 Tens of thousands were arrested.

00:03:56.040 Some were murdered.

00:03:57.680 But eventually, after a big struggle during the Solidarity Movement, they won their freedom.

00:04:03.280 So I grew up hearing about the Nazis.

00:04:05.460 I grew up hearing about the Gestapo SS.

00:04:08.620 In my town, where I was growing up, was a concentration camp. 0.64

00:04:12.360 So as kids, we were playing in the bunkers that Germans built to murder people. 1.00

00:04:16.900 So I've heard from my grandparents about the atrocities of the Germans that they did in Europe and in Poland, of course.

00:04:24.000 And then firsthand, I saw what the communists did.

00:04:26.800 The police brutality, arrests, beatings, torturing, lawlessness, propaganda machinery, nonstop.

00:04:35.360 You were not allowed to listen to anything.

00:04:37.600 If you were caught listening to European radio in Poland, you could go to jail for five years.

00:04:43.100 But, of course, after you were brutally arrested and tortured and then sentenced.

00:04:47.800 If you were caught with something that was outside of the propaganda, so a leaflet or something else that was contrary, a book, for example, that was prohibited under the Soviet era, you could be tortured and sentenced to jail.

00:05:03.760 If you were caught with one American dollar, you could go for one year to jail.

00:05:08.120 So I've seen a lot of things, but I also have seen good.

00:05:12.680 I've seen when people come together and fade.

00:05:15.500 I will never forget this image when tens of thousands of people took it to the streets and they built this huge, huge cross. 0.78

00:05:23.540 And they marched with that cross and the soldiers were sent and they were ordered to shoot them dead.

00:05:28.300 But they they finally refused to do it.

00:05:30.820 And the people won and they prayed because prayer was illegal.

00:05:35.460 Congregating together, just like today, was illegal.

00:05:38.180 But people, by the tens of thousands, they did it.

00:05:41.080 So what I'm trying to say to you, there is hope.

00:05:43.540 Listen from a guy that grew up under craziness, hearing the stories of the Nazism and fascism and then seeing the communism, you know, destroying everything.

00:05:54.080 But people rose together. And here we are together.

00:05:57.640 I am a father. I have three children.

00:06:00.520 I was in monastery in Poland.

00:06:02.720 I was to become a priest.

00:06:04.620 God had a different plan for my life.

00:06:06.720 So now I am a pastor.

00:06:09.180 I'm feeding thousands of people on the streets of Calgary.

00:06:11.580 I escaped on the boat, irony, on a Russian boat to Istanbul, Turkey, and then to Piraeus in Athens, where we actually literally escaped from that boat.

00:06:24.880 And we were threatened that we would be arrested.

00:06:27.100 But God opened the doors and we went to the other side of the fence, throwing our belongings through the fence.

00:06:34.680 And we lived in Greece for five years.

00:06:38.420 And irony again, the Canadian government said, we want people like you to come, sell your business, sell your belongings, come to Canada.

00:06:46.440 Why? Because it's the freest country on the planet Earth.

00:06:49.280 No one will persecute you for your fate.

00:06:51.820 And we finally decided after many years of living in two countries that were very corrupted, everything was run by bribery and constant fear.

00:07:00.460 We came to Canada to start all over again in 1995.

00:07:12.980 And I pray the same prayer that John Paul II prayed.

00:07:25.100 You lived through a kind of brutal persecution, and yet you find in yourself, despite watching, and I'm sure in the communist times that you lived through, you would have seen families arrested.

00:07:44.600 You would have seen, as you said, the brutal torture of people, yet you're still willing to speak out and do so forcefully in defense of freedom.

00:08:03.060 I mean, I said quite often, and publicly, and to my congregants, that God had blessed me with amazing people, freedom fighters, lovers of people, lovers of this country.

00:08:17.680 If you think for a second that you pay me and I work for you, you're delusional.

00:08:22.640 I have only one God as boss, and you're not God.

00:08:28.720 And when he tells me to do something, I will do it, even if it offends all of you, and you will choose to leave this place.

00:08:46.120 When my son was born, Nathaniel, the first one, Nathaniel in Hebrew means gift from God, a gift of God.

00:08:55.300 He had a heart on opposite sides, smashed lungs.

00:08:58.480 I was in a business realm at that time, and I always thought that you can buy anything you want with money.

00:09:04.860 I always had this saying, you know what?

00:09:10.900 At that moment, 21 years ago, I realized that there are certain things you cannot buy.

00:09:17.680 You can be the richest man on the planet Earth, and you can be the most miserable person on Earth.

00:09:24.060 You can have all the money, but if something is broken and people cannot fix it, that's it.

00:09:47.040 I think this was the first time that I really realized there's someone more powerful than money, more powerful than politicians, more powerful than lawyers, judges, and the mighty dollar.

00:09:58.680 I have to tell you, that was a moment when I had my big rebellious fight with God.

00:10:06.920 You know, we always have this saying, why not the neighbor?

00:10:16.700 I did terrible things, but this guy is worse than me.

00:10:27.540 And I had a vision, and I would encourage you to watch a documentary that was done on my life.

00:10:39.500 And I'm telling all that story over there.

00:10:44.060 And I'm telling you, as a businessman, I did not believe in visions.

00:11:09.380 They said even if he survives this time, he's going to be vegetable for the rest of his life.

00:11:14.480 And they told me three doctors to unplug him.

00:11:19.060 She called everyone she knew.

00:11:21.080 Many churches were praying.

00:11:22.260 Many family and friends called other friends.

00:11:25.480 So there was a huge amount of people that were praying and visiting the intensive care in the children's hospital here.

00:11:32.980 Me, on the other hand, I was just watching this whole thing like what's happening to somebody else.

00:11:38.500 After my rage against God, after me calling him names and lifting fists and, oh, you, how terrible you are.

00:11:46.580 Then I calmed down and I just observed.

00:11:49.060 And I saw Jesus Christ in Gethsemane.

00:11:50.960 I saw the torture.

00:11:52.200 I saw the beatings.

00:11:53.380 I can tell you the conversations they had.

00:11:56.060 It was incredible.

00:11:57.340 And the beatings were so severe.

00:11:58.900 I ran away from the hospital and I came back the next day and it started again.

00:12:04.080 It happened to me three times until I saw the crucifixion.

00:12:08.640 I saw the darkness.

00:12:09.760 I saw the earthquake.

00:12:10.840 I saw when the creation was crying.

00:12:13.080 And then I heard a voice talking to me.

00:12:15.520 And he said, what would you do to save your son?

00:15:51.640 Something happened because, you know, I was walking there expecting that my son is dead.

00:16:00.380 I said, God, whatever you're going to do, whatever is your answer, if you choose to take him home,

00:16:08.260 So this horror, this suffering for me and my wife would end.
