Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors is a lecture by Dr. Jordan B. Peterson. In this lecture, Dr. Peterson talks about Joseph and the coat of many colors, and how he became the patriarch of the 12 tribes of the Ten Tribes, and the father of Jacob, the first king of the Israelites. This lecture was recorded in the midst of riots in Serbia, so I apologize for the delay in posting this episode. I'm still in Serbia and there are still riots in the streets, but I hope you're not too cooped up in the aftermath of the chaos. 00:02:57.020Season 3, Episode 15, Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors, a Jordan B. Peterson Lecture.
00:03:18.520That's a hell of a welcome for someone who's going to talk about the Bible.
00:03:21.580So, I thought I would get farther than through Genesis by this point, but I'm not unhappy about the pace either.
00:03:32.560I've learned a tremendous amount, and so hopefully what we'll do today is finish Genesis completely.
00:03:40.640And then I think I'll try to start up with Exodus in May, depending on what happens next year.
00:03:47.460I have a busy travel schedule, but I would really like to do it.
00:03:50.660I really like the Exodus story, and I understand it very well.
00:03:53.860A lot of the stories in Genesis, especially after the first few stories, say up to the Tower of Babel,
00:03:59.500I had to do a tremendous amount of learning about, which is really good.
00:04:02.440But I do know the Exodus story, so I'm really looking forward to that.
00:04:06.700So, let's dive right into it and see how far we can get today.
00:05:46.360But sometimes you also want to do things that are the worst things you can do.
00:05:49.540You know, because you're angry or resentful or bitter.
00:05:51.660And so the moral decisions that you make that govern your actions are really the most important decisions that you make in your life.
00:05:59.620And it's not that easy to figure out how to make moral decisions.
00:06:03.600We don't have an unerring technology for that the same way as we do for, say, making decisions about empirical reality.
00:06:12.240Which, in some ways, seem a lot simpler.
00:06:16.600Partly because we can work collectively at it.
00:06:18.580Partly because we have a rigorous methodology for deciding what's true and what's not.
00:06:22.800So, one of the things that's really struck me, like it's an overarching theme, I would say, that emerges out of Genesis.
00:06:30.120Especially after the really ancient stories, say, especially after the stories of Cain and Abel and Noah and the Tower of Babel.
00:06:43.680When you get to the accounts of the historically, more historically real people.
00:06:52.060One injunction seems to be, get the hell out there and do something.
00:06:57.260You know, one of the major themes for all of the patriarchs that we've talked about, Abraham, say, Jacob, and Joseph, is move out into the world regardless of the circumstances at hand.
00:07:14.140Now, that's in the Old Testament stories, that's basically portrayed as hearkening to the voice of God.
00:07:22.140Maybe you could think about that as destiny or a psychological calling.
00:07:25.180And the funny thing, too, is that it's not that these people have an easy time of it when they heed that call.
00:07:33.340So, what's fascinating is that they often run into extreme difficulties right away.
00:07:39.560And I think that's very interesting, first of all, because life is obviously full of extreme difficulties.
00:07:45.320And second, it's another example of the failure to sugarcoat things, which is one of the things I think makes a mockery of anti-religious theories that are even quite sophisticated.
00:07:57.020Say, like Freud's, because Freud thought of religion as a wish fulfillment, essentially.
00:08:03.220And also Marx, who thought about religion as the opiate of the masses.
00:08:09.660If those were true, it seems to me that there'd be a lot more wish.
