00:00:00.940 Hey everyone, real quick before you skip, I want to talk to you about something serious and important.
00:00:06.480 Dr. Jordan Peterson has created a new series that could be a lifeline for those battling depression and anxiety.
00:00:12.740 We know how isolating and overwhelming these conditions can be, and we wanted to take a moment to reach out to those listening who may be struggling.
00:00:20.100 With decades of experience helping patients, Dr. Peterson offers a unique understanding of why you might be feeling this way in his new series.
00:00:27.400 He provides a roadmap towards healing, showing that while the journey isn't easy, it's absolutely possible to find your way forward.
00:00:35.360 If you're suffering, please know you are not alone. There's hope, and there's a path to feeling better.
00:00:41.800 Go to Daily Wire Plus now and start watching Dr. Jordan B. Peterson on depression and anxiety.
00:00:47.460 Let this be the first step towards the brighter future you deserve.
00:00:51.040 Good evening and welcome to Dr. Jordan B. Peterson's We Who Wrestle With God Tour.
00:01:00.280 Thank you.
00:01:30.280 All these great bands, and here you are tonight.
00:01:36.360 Well, thank you very much for coming.
00:01:38.260 Let me tell you what's going to happen tonight.
00:01:39.960 I'm going to share my thoughts with you for 70 minutes, thereabouts.
00:01:48.020 Then I have a special guest here, Konstantin Kizin, who runs a podcast.
00:01:53.180 Good. Well, you should know about him, definitely.
00:01:58.620 Crazy Russian from the UK.
00:02:02.320 A real voice of reason for our fellow Westerners in the UK.
00:02:12.720 Konstantin is going to come out on stage and torture me about what I said, I hope.
00:02:18.500 Well, what I'm hoping, Konstantin is a very clear thinker, very witty man.
00:02:25.200 He's got a very sharp mind.
00:02:27.000 He's critically oriented in the best possible way.
00:02:29.840 A good critical mind separates the wheat from the chaff, right?
00:02:33.040 Because to be property critical isn't to hurt or destroy with criticism.
00:02:38.360 It's to separate what's truly valuable from what isn't valuable,
00:02:42.220 so that you have solid ground to stand on.
00:02:44.400 And, you know, one of the things that I've strived to do in my whole academic career
00:02:48.460 is to move closer and closer to believing and stating and writing things
00:02:55.880 that I can't move.
00:03:01.240 And you do that yourself by subjecting your own presumptions to critical analysis.
00:03:10.600 You do that so that you think through what you're doing,
00:03:14.720 so that you don't act out your stupid ideas in the world and die.
00:03:19.840 And that's the purpose of thinking, right?
00:03:22.220 Seriously, the purpose of thinking is to have your stupid ideas die instead of you.
00:03:29.580 And that's part of the reason why your enemy can be your best friend,
00:03:32.600 because if someone can take out something you think,
00:03:35.760 because they can show you how it's erroneous and counterproductive,
00:03:40.200 and then you don't have to go through all the trouble of learning that stupidly in the world,
00:03:44.620 that's a fine gift.
00:03:46.620 And so, I'm hoping that Constantine can stand in for the audience,
00:03:52.960 for the critical and skeptical audience.
00:03:55.160 We're talking about very difficult issues.
00:03:56.940 It's highly likely that I could formulate what I'm stating more clearly and precisely.
00:04:05.880 And so, Constantine will come out and we'll discuss what was presented tonight,
00:04:13.320 and then we'll turn to the questions that you've kindly delivered and discuss those.
00:04:19.360 And then we'll reintroduce the band, and that should do for the evening.
00:04:24.580 And so, that's the plan.
00:04:27.560 And so, away we go.
00:04:30.180 I'm very much looking forward to this.
00:04:39.020 So, the first thing we're going to talk about is,
00:04:42.320 we're going to talk about stories and set the stage.
00:04:47.080 I think we're at a crucial inflection point in the world.
00:04:54.880 Culturally and philosophically.
00:04:57.560 I think we're on the dawn of a new set of realizations.
00:05:02.480 A new set of realizations that will return us to our fundamentals.
00:05:07.620 I think the reason that we have a culture war raging in the West,
00:05:11.800 why there's so much instability,
00:05:14.080 is because something new is struggling to be born or reborn.
00:05:19.180 And I want to explain the reason for that first.
00:05:23.860 And the reason is that the Enlightenment view of the world,
00:05:31.480 which has guided our technological and scientific endeavor,
00:05:35.980 our conceptual endeavor,
00:05:37.080 our philosophical endeavor for a few hundred years,
00:05:43.520 is there's something about it that's wrong.
00:05:45.780 Like, deeply wrong.
00:05:47.200 And that error is making itself manifest in the scientific community.
00:05:54.860 Because I would say now that scientists themselves from a multitude of different disciplines
00:06:00.860 understand that the idea that we see the world as a place of facts,
00:06:08.060 or that we see the world as rational creatures,
00:06:11.640 or that you can even see the world that way,
00:06:14.760 is wrong.
00:06:16.640 Wrong.
00:06:17.200 And I believe that it's been demonstrated to be wrong.
00:06:20.840 This isn't a matter of mere philosophical opinion anymore,
00:06:24.540 although it's also that.
00:06:26.400 One example, for example,
00:06:28.620 is that the newest artificial intelligence systems that we've designed,
00:06:34.780 the large language models that have burst onto the stage in the last year,
00:06:39.000 or thereabouts,
00:06:39.920 ChatGPT,
00:06:41.240 the catastrophic Gemini that Google so foolishly launched,
00:06:45.020 Elon Musk's Grok.
00:06:49.220 These systems are trained like human beings are trained.
00:06:53.760 They have an aim.
00:06:54.940 They have a purpose.
00:06:56.580 They were trained with reward and punishment, so to speak.
00:07:00.840 They're approximations to a target.
00:07:03.280 They see the world through a structure of value
00:07:06.520 that they have absorbed from human beings
00:07:09.560 to make the world's smartest linguistic machines.
00:07:15.640 We had to inculcate in them a structure of value.
00:07:19.980 Okay.
00:07:20.480 And so,
00:07:21.320 and we produced machines now
00:07:23.180 that can engage in discourse,
00:07:25.760 that can use language in a way
00:07:27.300 that's virtually indistinguishable from the human,
00:07:29.340 and that's going to become
00:07:30.300 radically indistinguishable from the human
00:07:33.500 very, very rapidly.
00:07:35.720 And they're not programmed like lists of rules.
00:07:40.580 They're not programmed like ordinary thinking machines.
00:07:45.440 They're programmed the same way that human beings learn.
00:07:48.000 They're programmed with aim.
00:07:49.540 They have an ethos and an ethic.
00:07:51.120 We can't orient ourselves in the world
00:07:58.420 with the facts.
00:08:01.840 We can't follow the science
00:08:04.520 because science isn't a leader.
00:08:07.980 Science doesn't establish our aims.
00:08:11.100 Our aims are established
00:08:12.360 using mechanisms of perception and emotion
00:08:15.980 and thought that aren't in themselves scientific.
00:08:19.420 We're aiming at something.
00:08:23.560 Why can't we orient ourselves
00:08:25.700 in the world with the facts?
00:08:30.140 Well, the simplest explanation for that
00:08:33.440 is that there are too many facts.
00:08:37.960 There's as many facts as there are phenomena.
00:08:42.620 More, actually.
00:08:44.040 There's as many facts as there are
00:08:46.100 possible combinations of phenomena.
00:08:49.420 You drown in the facts.
00:08:51.760 When you're confused in your own life
00:08:53.760 and things are chaotic
00:08:54.760 and you're anxious,
00:08:56.820 it's because a plethora of possibilities
00:09:00.220 is making itself manifest in front of you
00:09:02.900 and you don't know which way to turn.
00:09:05.220 You don't have a clear direction.
00:09:06.620 You don't have a clear aim.
00:09:07.680 There's no way of simplifying the world
00:09:09.620 so that you can act in it.
00:09:11.680 We know, for example,
00:09:13.140 that to perceive the world,
00:09:14.740 you have to obliterate from your consciousness
00:09:17.740 almost everything that you could see
00:09:20.740 because otherwise you're overwhelmed.
00:09:25.440 We know even that the hallucinogens
00:09:27.320 who are being studied with increasing intensity
00:09:31.100 in recent years
00:09:32.780 interfere with your normal perception
00:09:36.140 such that they bring to consciousness
00:09:39.400 a plethora of things
00:09:41.680 that under normal circumstances you ignore.
00:09:45.140 And the consequence of that
00:09:46.380 is an influx of a sense
00:09:49.480 of overwhelming significance and meaning
00:09:51.980 but at the same time
00:09:53.560 a kind of paralysis of action
00:09:55.540 because when everything becomes
00:09:58.320 infinitely meaningful,
00:10:00.540 there's no straightforward way
00:10:02.820 of moving forward.
00:10:04.420 When you're in a restaurant
00:10:05.700 with someone on a first date
00:10:07.520 and you're focusing on
00:10:09.380 the conversation and actions
00:10:11.600 of your date
00:10:12.580 in a sea of competing conversations,
00:10:18.380 you zero out everything
00:10:19.960 that you could be attending to
00:10:22.480 in every other table.
00:10:24.040 All the competing thoughts
00:10:25.660 in your imagination.
00:10:27.140 All the things you could be
00:10:28.800 bringing to mind
00:10:30.100 to zero in with like laser pinpoint accuracy
00:10:33.820 on what it is
00:10:35.280 that your partner in conversation is doing.
00:10:37.920 And you do that in the world all the time.
00:10:40.020 You make one thing at a time
00:10:42.380 of pinnacle importance
00:10:44.740 and you arrange everything else in the world
00:10:48.340 at every moment that you perceive
00:10:50.580 around that thing that you've made
00:10:53.080 of pinnacle importance.
00:10:55.200 That's how you see the world.
00:10:56.640 And I don't mean think about the world.
00:10:58.420 This is under thought.
00:11:00.600 It's more profound.
00:11:02.740 It's what you do
00:11:04.220 when you actually see.
00:11:07.140 If I decide to do something
00:11:09.980 straightforward
00:11:11.800 like walk from here
00:11:15.760 to the stairs on the stage
00:11:18.220 and I set my aim,
00:11:20.860 I don't perceive any of you
00:11:23.760 in consequence
00:11:25.220 because the fact of your existence
00:11:27.920 is irrelevant to my purpose
00:11:29.880 and you're gone.
00:11:32.200 None of the facts of the stage
00:11:34.540 that I could attend to
00:11:36.460 are relevant and perceptible
00:11:39.400 anymore except insofar
00:11:42.320 as they're pathways
00:11:45.380 or facilitators or obstacles
00:11:48.360 to my journey forward.
00:11:50.780 If I'm looking to the stairs,
00:11:53.380 I see the chairs
00:11:54.900 but not as places to sit.
00:11:57.060 I see them as obstacles
00:11:59.080 that I have to circumvent
00:12:00.780 in order to attain my aim.
00:12:03.060 Everything that you see in the world
00:12:05.240 makes itself manifest
00:12:07.040 in accordance with your aim.
00:12:10.100 And that's a radically,
00:12:12.120 revolutionarily,
00:12:13.680 different way of conceptualizing the world
00:12:16.620 than the notion
00:12:19.200 that you take the facts
00:12:21.160 and you sort them
00:12:23.140 despite their infinite number
00:12:25.620 and calculate your way
00:12:27.640 with the facts
00:12:29.060 rationally forward.
00:12:31.040 That's not what you do.
00:12:33.780 All right.
00:12:34.140 Here's a proposition
00:12:40.140 to contemplate.
00:12:42.620 It's another proposition
00:12:44.000 that has revolutionary significance.
00:12:46.200 It'll explain all sorts of things
00:12:47.680 that you know to be true
00:12:48.880 but don't know why they're true.
00:12:52.880 The description
00:12:54.180 of the structure
00:12:57.840 through which you see the world
00:13:00.640 is a story.
00:13:04.800 That's what a story is.
00:13:06.300 Okay.
00:13:06.580 So now,
00:13:07.620 this explains
00:13:08.620 many things
00:13:10.020 that are otherwise left
00:13:10.980 as mysteries
00:13:12.780 or side effects.
00:13:15.740 I read a book
00:13:16.300 by Steven Pinker once.
00:13:17.700 Pinker's an Enlightenment
00:13:18.760 rationalist from Harvard
00:13:20.380 and a good guy
00:13:21.400 and very smart
00:13:22.300 and much of what he says
00:13:24.000 is extraordinarily useful
00:13:25.120 but he believes,
00:13:26.460 for example,
00:13:26.960 that our proclivity
00:13:27.760 to enjoy and tell stories
00:13:30.300 is like a side effect
00:13:31.600 of something
00:13:33.360 more fundamental
00:13:34.160 cognitively.
00:13:34.980 It's the story
00:13:36.160 as entertainment theory.
00:13:37.660 You go to a movie
00:13:38.460 because it's fun.
00:13:40.340 You read a book
00:13:41.600 of fiction
00:13:42.180 to your child
00:13:42.800 because it's fun.
00:13:44.260 It's not core
00:13:45.600 to the,
00:13:47.680 what would you say,
00:13:48.880 it's not a core element
00:13:50.460 of the way
00:13:51.100 that you exist
00:13:51.920 in the world.
00:13:53.560 It's mere entertainment.
00:13:55.040 It misses the point,
00:14:00.640 that theory.
00:14:01.880 Why is it entertaining?
00:14:04.380 Why can you teach
00:14:05.540 children with stories?
00:14:07.760 If you get the story
00:14:09.180 right for a child,
00:14:10.220 you can capture
00:14:11.160 the child's interest
00:14:12.020 and you can
00:14:12.600 integrate almost
00:14:15.200 any form of learning
00:14:16.180 into the story
00:14:17.000 and the child
00:14:17.940 will be captivated
00:14:18.760 by that.
00:14:19.400 When children play,
00:14:21.280 pretend play,
00:14:21.940 which they do
00:14:22.540 spontaneously,
00:14:23.500 they spontaneously
00:14:25.200 dramatize the world.
00:14:26.640 They spontaneously
00:14:27.620 make stories
00:14:30.280 out of their roles
00:14:31.560 and their,
00:14:32.260 and their destinies.
00:14:35.080 And that,
00:14:35.600 that,
00:14:36.580 that captures them.
00:14:38.160 That forms the basis
00:14:39.200 of their friendships.
00:14:40.560 That's why children
00:14:41.200 want to play
00:14:41.780 so frenetically
00:14:42.660 is that they're
00:14:43.920 practicing
00:14:45.100 modeling the world.
00:14:47.300 When you go see a movie,
00:14:49.160 it's not that you
00:14:50.360 want to be entertained,
00:14:51.680 although it is
00:14:52.560 entertained.
00:14:52.880 That's not why
00:14:53.520 you're there.
00:14:54.320 It's not for fun
00:14:55.560 either.
00:14:56.540 That's easy to understand
00:14:58.060 and to,
00:14:58.500 and to see
00:14:59.100 what's fun
00:15:00.440 about a horror movie.
00:15:02.760 I'm dead serious.
00:15:04.080 It's like,
00:15:05.100 people will be
00:15:07.880 so afraid
00:15:08.480 in a horror movie
00:15:09.140 that they'll
00:15:09.520 cover their eyes.
00:15:11.420 They'll hide
00:15:12.000 behind the chair
00:15:12.780 in front of them.
00:15:14.040 They'll ask
00:15:14.640 themselves afterwards
00:15:15.480 why they even
00:15:16.620 put themselves
00:15:17.160 through it.
00:15:18.020 And yet,
00:15:18.480 they'll line up
00:15:19.300 and pay to do it.
00:15:20.400 Well,
00:15:21.780 why would you
00:15:23.240 line up
00:15:24.520 and pay
00:15:25.300 to torture yourself?
00:15:28.240 Well,
00:15:29.720 because you want to know
00:15:32.980 how to deal
00:15:33.480 with what's horrifying.
00:15:34.400 And you want to
00:15:37.180 practice that
00:15:37.800 in a way
00:15:38.220 if you can
00:15:38.860 that isn't
00:15:40.100 in itself fatal.
00:15:41.580 You want to
00:15:42.060 expose yourself
00:15:42.760 to the catastrophes
00:15:43.960 of existence
00:15:44.560 so that you're
00:15:45.800 prepared when
00:15:46.340 those catastrophes
00:15:47.280 come along.
00:15:48.160 You want to
00:15:48.680 expose yourself
00:15:50.500 to the predators
00:15:52.100 that lurk everywhere.
00:15:53.520 You want to
00:15:54.580 inure yourself
00:15:55.540 against what's
00:15:56.440 disgusting
00:15:57.100 and contaminating
00:15:58.180 because you're
00:15:59.040 going to have
00:15:59.380 to deal with it.
00:16:00.720 You want to
00:16:01.240 expose yourself
00:16:01.940 to what's frightening
00:16:02.620 so that you can
00:16:03.460 find the courage
00:16:04.680 within you
00:16:05.520 to deal with
00:16:06.660 what's frightening.
00:16:07.820 And that's part
00:16:08.540 of the instinct
00:16:09.180 to develop
00:16:10.320 and expand
00:16:11.020 your competence.
00:16:12.540 And it's
00:16:13.320 in that expansion
00:16:14.760 of competence
00:16:15.780 and skill
00:16:16.760 that occurs
00:16:17.780 as a consequence
00:16:18.560 of that voluntary
00:16:19.440 exposure
00:16:20.140 that the
00:16:21.140 entertainment
00:16:21.820 is situated.
00:16:23.380 The reason
00:16:23.840 that's entertaining
00:16:24.600 is because
00:16:25.180 it's part
00:16:26.540 of the manner
00:16:27.200 in which you
00:16:27.860 expand yourself.
00:16:29.100 And you can
00:16:30.580 do that
00:16:30.900 in the direction
00:16:31.480 of what's
00:16:31.900 dark and
00:16:32.420 terrible
00:16:32.840 just as you
00:16:33.840 can in the
00:16:34.960 direction of
00:16:35.420 say what's
00:16:35.940 heroic.
00:16:37.560 Going online
00:16:38.480 without ExpressVPN
00:16:39.460 is like not
00:16:40.320 paying attention
00:16:40.880 to the safety
00:16:41.420 demonstration
00:16:41.960 on a flight.
00:16:43.160 Most of the time
00:16:43.740 you'll probably
00:16:44.340 be fine
00:16:44.940 but what if
00:16:45.880 one day
00:16:46.280 that weird
00:16:46.920 yellow mask
00:16:47.500 drops down
00:16:48.060 from overhead
00:16:48.520 and you have
00:16:49.440 no idea
00:16:50.020 what to do?
00:16:50.820 In our
00:16:51.120 hyper-connected
00:16:51.860 world
00:16:52.140 your digital
00:16:52.840 privacy
00:16:53.240 isn't just
00:16:53.800 a luxury
00:16:54.200 it's a
00:16:55.000 fundamental right.
00:16:55.960 Every time
00:16:56.340 you connect
00:16:56.720 to an unsecured
00:16:57.500 network
00:16:57.900 in a cafe
00:16:58.560 hotel
00:16:59.120 or airport
00:16:59.880 you're essentially
00:17:00.760 broadcasting
00:17:01.380 your personal
00:17:01.960 information
00:17:02.460 to anyone
00:17:03.180 with a technical
00:17:03.920 know-how
00:17:04.360 to intercept it.
00:17:05.300 And let's be
00:17:05.720 clear
00:17:05.980 it doesn't
00:17:06.680 take a genius
00:17:07.220 hacker
00:17:07.520 to do this.
00:17:08.520 With some
00:17:08.860 off-the-shelf
00:17:09.460 hardware
00:17:09.840 even a tech
00:17:10.640 savvy teenager
00:17:11.440 could potentially
00:17:12.180 access your
00:17:12.820 passwords
00:17:13.360 bank logins
00:17:14.300 and credit
00:17:14.880 card details.
00:17:15.940 Now you might
00:17:16.640 think
00:17:16.940 what's the big
00:17:17.640 deal
00:17:17.880 who'd want
00:17:18.360 my data
00:17:18.880 anyway?
00:17:19.600 Well on
00:17:20.020 the dark web
00:17:20.540 your personal
00:17:21.280 information
00:17:21.800 could fetch
00:17:22.280 up to $1,000.
00:17:23.920 That's right
00:17:24.600 there's a whole
00:17:25.280 underground economy
00:17:26.200 built on stolen
00:17:27.200 identities.
00:17:28.180 Enter
00:17:28.480 ExpressVPN.
00:17:29.960 It's like a
00:17:30.400 digital fortress
00:17:31.100 creating an
00:17:31.900 encrypted tunnel
00:17:32.600 between your
00:17:33.220 device and the
00:17:33.940 internet.
00:17:34.640 Their encryption
00:17:35.100 is so robust
00:17:36.220 that it would
00:17:36.700 take a hacker
00:17:37.240 with a supercomputer
00:17:38.100 over a billion
00:17:39.100 years to crack it.
00:17:40.280 But don't let
00:17:40.860 its power fool
00:17:41.520 you.
00:17:41.980 ExpressVPN is
00:17:42.940 incredibly user-friendly.
00:17:44.440 With just one
00:17:45.080 click you're
00:17:45.540 protected across
00:17:46.280 all your devices.
00:17:47.480 Phones, laptops,
00:17:48.540 tablets, you name
00:17:49.420 it.
00:17:49.640 That's why I use
00:17:50.420 ExpressVPN whenever
00:17:51.480 I'm traveling or
00:17:52.520 working from a
00:17:53.180 coffee shop.
00:17:53.780 It gives me peace
00:17:54.460 of mind knowing
00:17:55.080 that my research,
00:17:56.160 communications,
00:17:56.920 and personal data
00:17:57.920 are shielded from
00:17:58.780 prying eyes.

00:18:04.500 That's E-X-P-R-E-S-S
00:18:06.560 vpn.com
00:18:07.620 slash Jordan and
00:18:08.500 you can get an

00:18:10.720 Expressvpn.com
00:18:12.040 slash Jordan.
00:18:12.780 What do you do
00:18:16.700 when you go to
00:18:17.260 a movie?
00:18:18.160 You fasten
00:18:19.520 on to a character
00:18:20.480 and you understand
00:18:21.700 that character
00:18:22.240 the same way
00:18:22.920 that you understand
00:18:24.100 people that you're
00:18:24.920 in conversation
00:18:25.460 with.
00:18:26.120 Now you might
00:18:26.600 think that the
00:18:27.360 way that you
00:18:27.900 understand people
00:18:28.740 is by you
00:18:29.760 listen to what
00:18:30.420 they say and
00:18:31.300 you extract out
00:18:32.300 the knowledge
00:18:33.040 that they're
00:18:33.540 delivering to
00:18:34.240 you in terms
00:18:35.680 of facts and
00:18:36.520 you interpret
00:18:37.040 the facts and
00:18:37.820 you derive your
00:18:38.540 understanding of
00:18:39.260 the person.
00:18:40.160 Like none of
00:18:40.880 that's true.
00:18:41.520 that has
00:18:42.940 absolutely nothing
00:18:43.940 to do with how
00:18:44.660 you establish a
00:18:45.420 relationship with
00:18:46.120 someone.
00:18:46.920 And well here's
00:18:47.660 some proof.
00:18:48.580 Is that what you
00:18:49.260 do with a dog?
00:18:51.520 Well obviously
00:18:52.580 not but you can
00:18:53.780 establish a
00:18:54.460 relationship with
00:18:55.260 a dog and so
00:18:57.140 and the relationship
00:18:58.100 you have with a
00:18:58.860 dog it's not the
00:19:00.140 same as the
00:19:00.800 relationship with
00:19:01.520 a person but a
00:19:02.180 dog's a pack
00:19:02.860 animal.
00:19:03.660 A dog can become
00:19:04.300 a member of the
00:19:05.000 family.
00:19:06.200 You can understand
00:19:08.280 a dog well enough
00:19:09.480 so the dog likes
00:19:11.100 you.
00:19:12.380 Right and so
00:19:13.240 whatever you're
00:19:14.260 doing with the
00:19:14.820 dog it isn't
00:19:15.600 discourse about
00:19:17.480 propositions because
00:19:19.040 most of the dogs
00:19:20.120 you own don't
00:19:21.680 talk.
00:19:23.100 So and it's the
00:19:25.040 same with very
00:19:25.640 young children and
00:19:27.020 it's the same with
00:19:30.040 an infant.
00:19:31.140 You establish a
00:19:32.180 relationship using
00:19:33.800 mechanisms that
00:19:34.720 aren't propositional.
00:19:36.980 They're not rules.
00:19:37.980 They're not
00:19:38.240 descriptions.
00:19:38.800 They're not facts.
00:19:40.260 That's not how you
00:19:41.200 do it.
00:19:41.940 How do you do it?
00:19:42.960 Where do you look
00:19:43.720 when you talk to
00:19:44.460 someone?
00:19:45.680 You look at their
00:19:46.380 eyes.
00:19:48.000 Why?
00:19:49.140 To see where
00:19:49.980 they're pointing
00:19:50.460 them.
00:19:51.540 Why?
00:19:52.440 So you can see
00:19:53.480 what they're looking
00:19:54.240 at.
00:19:55.080 Why?
00:19:56.720 So you can infer
00:19:57.880 what's important to
00:19:58.780 them because we
00:19:59.380 point our eyes at
00:20:00.140 that which is
00:20:01.740 important to us.
00:20:02.700 That's why our
00:20:03.480 eyes look the way
00:20:05.140 they look.
00:20:06.340 Black in the
00:20:06.980 middle, colored
00:20:07.880 on that ring
00:20:08.960 around that
00:20:09.540 against a white
00:20:10.420 background.
00:20:11.640 That's an evolved
00:20:12.540 mechanism.
00:20:13.220 I can see your
00:20:13.880 eyes.
00:20:14.940 All of our
00:20:15.680 ancestors whose
00:20:16.540 eyes weren't
00:20:17.660 visible either
00:20:19.160 got killed or
00:20:19.960 didn't reproduce.
00:20:22.520 The one thing you
00:20:23.440 want to know about
00:20:24.080 someone right away
00:20:25.260 is where the hell
00:20:26.040 their eyes are
00:20:26.620 pointed.
00:20:27.620 And you can do
00:20:28.200 that politely,
00:20:29.200 which you do by
00:20:30.180 attending to
00:20:30.740 someone without
00:20:31.660 too predatory a
00:20:33.040 stare.
00:20:33.840 You do that by
00:20:34.900 attending politely
00:20:36.580 to their face,
00:20:37.640 but not too
00:20:38.360 intensely, and not
00:20:39.360 attending, let's
00:20:40.360 say, inappropriately
00:20:41.420 to other parts of
00:20:42.320 their body.
00:20:43.440 And they're going to
00:20:44.860 be watching you to
00:20:45.660 see what you do
00:20:46.320 with your eyes.
00:20:47.660 Because the one
00:20:48.380 thing you want to
00:20:48.920 know about someone
00:20:49.760 above all else is
00:20:50.660 what the hell are
00:20:51.420 they up to?
00:20:53.100 Right?
00:20:53.400 What's their aim?
00:20:55.800 And so when you
00:20:57.180 go to a movie,
00:20:57.740 that's what you do.
00:20:58.380 When you watch a
00:20:58.940 character,
00:20:59.300 character in a
00:21:01.400 role, you see him
00:21:03.440 in a variety of
00:21:05.000 different situations.
00:21:07.000 And you watch how
00:21:08.660 he structures his
00:21:09.680 attention, what he
00:21:11.000 pays attention to.
00:21:12.460 His attention is a
00:21:13.440 costly business.
00:21:15.100 And so people pay
00:21:16.080 attention to what
00:21:17.120 they value.
00:21:18.300 You watch what they
00:21:19.100 attend to.
00:21:20.720 And you watch how
00:21:22.460 they prioritize their
00:21:24.040 actions.
00:21:24.940 And from that you
00:21:25.820 derive an
00:21:26.780 understanding of
00:21:28.440 what's important
00:21:29.280 to them, as soon as
00:21:30.700 you understand what's
00:21:31.600 important to them,
00:21:32.600 you've got their
00:21:33.260 aim.
00:21:34.080 You've figured that
00:21:34.920 character out.
00:21:35.500 This is what you do
00:21:36.180 when you learn to
00:21:38.520 know someone.
00:21:39.540 What's their aim?
00:21:41.480 As soon as you know
00:21:43.460 their aim, you can see
00:21:47.000 the world through
00:21:47.500 their eyes.
00:21:48.840 You can see the same
00:21:50.160 objects they see, and the
00:21:52.520 objects take on the same
00:21:53.880 emotional significance.
00:21:55.520 And when you say, I come
00:21:56.420 to understand someone, what
00:21:57.500 you really mean is, oh, I
00:21:59.120 understand their aim, and
00:22:00.200 now I can aim at the same
00:22:02.420 thing, at least in
00:22:05.100 simulation, at least
00:22:06.200 fictionally, and I can come
00:22:07.800 to inhabit the same world of
00:22:09.680 perception and emotion that
00:22:11.640 they inhabit.
00:22:12.220 I can even guess at how
00:22:16.280 they might act and to what
00:22:17.380 they might attend in
00:22:18.280 situations I haven't seen
00:22:19.380 because now I know their
00:22:20.300 aim.
00:22:21.020 What's he up to?
00:22:21.980 That's what you're thinking
00:22:22.760 in a murder mystery or in a
00:22:24.040 thriller.
00:22:24.520 What's he up to?
00:22:25.380 What's he up to?
00:22:26.140 What's going to happen next?
00:22:27.960 And so, the plot of the
00:22:30.380 fiction is the aim of the
00:22:32.840 character across time.
00:22:34.260 The aim as the character
00:22:35.280 unfolds.
00:22:36.260 And that might involve the
00:22:37.260 transformation of his aims as
00:22:39.100 well.
00:22:39.740 Right?
00:22:39.880 And that would be the
00:22:40.840 transformation of a
00:22:41.860 character in a movie.
00:22:43.160 He aims at one thing and he
00:22:44.280 learns that that aim is off
00:22:46.280 in some manner.
00:22:47.140 Or he comes to a bitter and
00:22:49.380 dismal partial end and has
00:22:51.960 to switch course.
00:22:53.100 And you want to see people
00:22:54.140 transform their aims.
00:22:55.700 That's character development.
00:23:00.240 We see the world through a
00:23:01.560 story.
00:23:04.680 The world's objects reveal
00:23:07.560 themselves in relationship to
00:23:09.400 our aim.
00:23:09.880 The landscape of emotion
00:23:14.220 presents itself as markers on
00:23:17.120 the pathway to our aim.
00:23:18.860 The world reveals itself in
00:23:20.360 accordance with our aim.
00:23:21.600 That's how perception works.
00:23:23.380 That's a hell of a thing to
00:23:24.500 learn.
00:23:25.660 Because if the world, for
00:23:26.740 example, appears to you only
00:23:29.060 as thorn-bearing obstacles,
00:23:32.580 right?
00:23:32.900 If you feel that everything's
00:23:34.060 arrayed against you and there's
00:23:35.240 no pathway forward, if you feel
00:23:37.000 that you're surrounded by foes and
00:23:39.080 obstacles instead of walking the
00:23:42.240 golden pathway accompanied by
00:23:44.580 allies with the world on your
00:23:46.640 side, you might ask yourself
00:23:49.320 whether or not your aim is wrong.
00:23:52.080 And so, the world lays itself out in
00:23:57.860 accordance with our aim.
00:23:59.280 We go, we produce fiction, we generate
00:24:06.120 fiction, we live in a fictional
00:24:08.700 landscape because we want to get our
00:24:12.060 aim right.
00:24:13.020 We read stories, we watch movies, we go
00:24:16.660 to plays, we talk to each other because we
00:24:19.260 want to get our aim right.
00:24:20.160 We want to find the place we should go
00:24:23.100 and we want to learn how to get there
00:24:24.340 efficiently.
00:24:25.640 And we're compelled by spirit and
00:24:29.800 instinct to establish the aim and follow
00:24:33.420 the path and to transform ourselves so
00:24:36.720 that our aim becomes ever more precise
00:24:40.060 and efficient and delivers us a world
00:24:44.460 that's ever more abundant and beautiful.
00:24:47.660 And that's all a function of aim.
00:24:52.860 Okay, so we live in a story.
00:24:54.840 Well then, as soon as you know that,
00:24:56.380 this is what the postmodernists figured
00:24:58.140 out, by the way.
00:24:59.880 This is why the literary critics have
00:25:03.140 become a dominant force in the culture
00:25:04.980 war.
00:25:06.280 The postmodernists were literary critics.
00:25:08.000 You think, well, there's nothing more
00:25:09.020 irrelevant than a literary critic.
00:25:10.620 Like, who the hell cares what an
00:25:12.160 intellectual thinks about a story?
00:25:14.340 I mean, of all the preposterous things
00:25:16.360 to be concerned about, that might top the
00:25:18.800 list.
00:25:19.300 Not if the story is the thing through
00:25:21.180 which you see the world.
00:25:22.460 If the story is the thing you see through
00:25:24.640 which you see the world, there's nothing
00:25:26.420 more powerful than a literary critic,
00:25:28.320 except perhaps an author.
00:25:30.780 And we wouldn't have a culture war right
00:25:33.200 now if the literary critic wasn't far
00:25:37.440 more powerful than anybody had possibly
00:25:39.200 imagined.
00:25:39.660 because the French intellectual literary
00:25:42.280 critics, known as the postmodernists,
00:25:44.700 have criticized the central story of the
00:25:48.340 West to death.
00:25:51.080 And that's why we have a culture war.
00:25:53.220 And it's no joke.
00:25:54.860 This is foundational.
00:25:56.360 There's no more serious conflict than that.
00:25:59.260 And you all can feel that.
00:26:00.440 That's why you're here.
00:26:01.480 You know that the world is shaking and
00:26:03.740 uncertain in a way that's new.
00:26:06.180 And the reason for that is the story
00:26:08.900 itself is under assault.
00:26:11.700 All right.
00:26:12.280 So let's wander through that a little bit.
00:26:15.600 You see the world through a story.
00:26:18.900 The rationalists or empiricists, even the
00:26:21.160 biologists, they might have an answer to
00:26:22.600 that.
00:26:22.840 They say, okay, fair enough.
00:26:23.880 You see the world through a story.
00:26:25.340 But the story is biologically determined
00:26:28.760 or socioculturally determined.
00:26:31.000 It's a story of sex.
00:26:33.040 That would be Freud.
00:26:33.860 Because for Freud and for Charles
00:26:35.780 Darwin, for that matter, for Richard
00:26:37.240 Dawkins, the famous atheist, to an
00:26:39.660 equal degree, the story, the aim is sex,
00:26:49.240 reproduction, and the story is predicated
00:26:53.500 on that aim.
00:26:55.300 Freud, Darwin, Dawkins.
00:26:57.760 The degenerate element of that is a descent
00:27:04.780 into a kind of hedonism.
00:27:07.040 Because if sex is the story, then why not
00:27:11.380 worship sex?
00:27:14.700 And some dispute that and say, no, the
00:27:18.600 central story isn't sex.
00:27:20.880 This would be the Marxists.
00:27:22.060 The central story is power.
00:27:28.800 That's the story that the universities tell
00:27:31.300 when they're not telling the story about sex.
00:27:34.740 It's all about power.
00:27:37.860 The essential human aim is domination,
00:27:43.640 oppression, victimization, exploitation.
00:27:46.640 The central theme of the family is a power dynamic.
00:27:53.840 The central theme of the relationship between men and women
00:27:56.460 is a power dynamic.
00:27:58.780 Marriage itself is a heteronormative, patriarchal
00:28:02.820 establishment of oppression that goes back to the dawn of time.
00:28:07.280 The nuclear family is the same thing.
00:28:11.460 Economic arrangements are nothing but power.
00:28:13.960 Friendships are nothing but power.
00:28:15.620 The landscape of human interaction is a dynamic of power.
00:28:21.300 Or sex.
00:28:22.860 Or both.
00:28:24.520 Or both fighting against one another.
00:28:28.260 Look, these are powerful ideas.
00:28:30.900 Why?
00:28:31.640 Well, obvious.
00:28:32.640 It's obvious.
00:28:33.440 Why?
00:28:33.740 I mean, first of all, without sex, there's no reproduction.
00:28:38.580 And without reproduction, there's no people.
00:28:42.820 And so the Darwinian, Freudian, Richard Dawkins, selfish gene claim is that,
00:28:49.360 well, what could it possibly be other than sex?
00:28:53.720 And the Marxists come running forward and say,
00:28:57.440 how about power?
00:29:00.140 And then the Marxists say, well, obviously it's power.
00:29:02.760 Because there's radical inequality in the world.
00:29:07.420 There's some who have and some who have not.
00:29:10.640 There's no reason to assume that property in the final analysis, let's say,
00:29:14.560 isn't a form of theft.
00:29:16.500 And everyone who has established themselves in some manner
00:29:19.440 has only done that by stealing from those who are powerless
00:29:24.440 and who have less everything they have
00:29:26.220 and accruing it to themselves.
00:29:27.380 And that's a credible claim for a variety of reasons.
00:29:31.260 The first most fundamental reason is that a minority of people
00:29:35.120 have all the success on any possible dimension of comparison.
00:29:39.580 It's a very small number of people who are radically attractive.
00:29:42.580 It's a very small number of people who are radically gifted in the visual arts, let's say.
00:29:47.260 It's a radically small percentage of people who are musicians.
00:29:50.200 A tiny percentage of the people have most of the money.
00:29:54.080 A tiny percentage of the people gather most of the attention.
00:29:58.840 It's a Pareto distribution.
00:30:00.540 And that's what Marx pointed on to.
00:30:02.200 The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
00:30:04.640 And there's real truth in that.
00:30:05.920 And there's truth in the claim that
00:30:07.360 people structure their relationships with power.

00:31:23.760 And that some people who obtain success
00:31:26.920 do it as a consequence of exploitation.
00:31:29.060 And it's equally true that
00:31:30.520 when any human relationship deteriorates,
00:31:35.260 it tends to deteriorate in the relationship of power.
00:31:37.680 If your marriage starts to become shaky,
00:31:40.800 then you begin to exploit each other.
00:31:43.600 Use force.
00:31:45.320 You try to get your way.
00:31:46.520 You try to dominate.
00:31:48.080 It's the same within any family
00:31:49.860 that's deteriorating into a state of pathology.
00:31:52.400 It's the same in any organization.
00:31:54.280 We've seen huge states
00:31:55.520 deteriorate into the tyrannical use of power.
00:31:58.500 If you had to identify
00:32:00.260 a cardinal attribute of mankind,
00:32:04.440 power is a reasonable hypothesis.
00:32:12.660 But let's think about that for a minute.
00:32:15.280 So imagine that...
00:32:18.340 Well, imagine that it's sex
00:32:21.920 that is and should be the
00:32:23.960 complete story of mankind.
00:32:26.240 Well, what does that mean exactly?
00:32:28.060 What's a world organized on that basis?
00:32:31.580 What does a world organized on that basis look like?
00:32:35.060 Well, there's nothing more important than sex.
00:32:37.200 Well, how about immediate sexual gratification
00:32:39.120 whenever you want it?
00:32:40.840 How about immediate sexual gratification
00:32:43.100 as the archetype of hedonism?
00:32:46.320 How about immediate sexual gratification
00:32:48.460 whenever you want it,
00:32:49.520 regardless of what anyone else has to say about it?
00:32:52.600 Because if it's the story
00:32:53.960 and it's the fundamental story,
00:32:55.820 then what stops me from gaining access
00:32:59.940 to what I want right now
00:33:02.060 regardless of the cost to anyone else?
00:33:06.220 If there's nothing beyond that,
00:33:08.300 if only the naive believe
00:33:09.920 that there's anything noble about humanity
00:33:11.960 beyond the immediate demand of reproduction,
00:33:14.720 then what have you got to say
00:33:15.960 that's moral about sex?
00:33:17.100 And why the hell shouldn't everybody
00:33:18.660 just do exactly what they want
00:33:20.900 with whoever they want,
00:33:22.420 whenever they want,
00:33:23.480 all the time?
00:33:25.800 And with power,
00:33:30.040 you can make exactly the same argument.
00:33:32.120 And classical societies,
00:33:33.940 aristocratic societies,
00:33:35.740 militaristic and martial societies
00:33:37.700 are predicated on this idea.
00:33:39.720 If I can push you around,
00:33:41.600 all that indicates is that
00:33:45.380 I should push you around
00:33:47.020 because if you're so weak
00:33:48.240 that I can push you around,
00:33:50.040 you have absolutely no ground whatsoever
00:33:53.100 to stand on to oppose me.
00:33:56.460 Because if you were moral
00:33:57.760 by the traditions of power,
00:33:59.720 I wouldn't be able to push you around.
00:34:02.840 And so,
00:34:03.600 it's very difficult to argue out of that
00:34:05.820 from a rational perspective.
00:34:07.120 why doesn't might make right?
00:34:09.220 And why isn't it only the weak
00:34:11.200 who claim that that's wrong?
00:34:13.080 And why isn't it only that the weak
00:34:14.900 claim that that's wrong?
00:34:16.600 Not because they're moral,
00:34:17.900 but because they're weak.
00:34:19.140 That would certainly be
00:34:20.120 a spin-off on the Nietzschean notion
00:34:22.620 that will to power
00:34:23.680 constitutes the core of man.
00:34:26.960 And I would say,
00:34:28.400 up until the dawn of
00:34:29.780 Judeo-Christian ethic,
00:34:32.180 let's say,
00:34:33.440 power ruled.
00:34:35.040 And then we can imagine
00:34:36.600 what sort of world it's like
00:34:38.060 when power rules.
00:34:39.040 Well, we know what that world's like.
00:34:40.460 It's like,
00:34:42.020 pay attention to the strongest
00:34:43.360 or suffer the consequences.
00:34:47.500 Well, is there something beyond that?
00:34:51.460 That's not mere naivety.
00:34:56.160 What's,
00:34:57.000 if it isn't power that's the story,
00:34:59.220 and if it isn't sex
00:35:00.160 that's the story,
00:35:02.640 what's the story?
00:35:05.040 For the West,
00:35:07.760 the answer to that is
00:35:09.720 the library of the Bible.
00:35:14.160 That's the story.
00:35:15.800 It's the story
00:35:16.700 upon which the West is founded.
00:35:20.600 It's the story that
00:35:22.120 has arisen over thousands of years,
00:35:25.920 tens of thousands of years,
00:35:27.040 for that matter,
00:35:28.040 attempting to address the core issue
00:35:33.780 What's the fundamental story?
00:35:39.000 It's no mystery to
00:35:40.560 make the claim that
00:35:42.240 the claim of the biblical
00:35:44.420 library of stories,
00:35:46.280 because it is a library,
00:35:48.180 is that
00:35:48.740 it's the fundamental story.
00:35:52.120 All right, so
00:35:53.140 we live in a story.
00:35:56.320 we've identified the competitors,
00:35:59.740 power and sex.
00:36:02.000 What is it that's being expressed
00:36:03.740 in the biblical story?
00:36:05.000 Look, if you go to a movie,
00:36:06.500 you read a complex book,
00:36:08.820 you go to a sophisticated movie,
00:36:10.400 a sophisticated play,
00:36:11.340 a Shakespearean play,
00:36:12.800 or you read a sophisticated work of fiction,
00:36:15.280 you see a multi-dimensional characterization.
00:36:20.200 Right?
00:36:20.700 A comic book has a hero with one motive.
00:36:25.380 A sophisticated work of fiction
00:36:26.860 has a hero,
00:36:29.400 and perhaps an anti-hero,
00:36:30.920 with complex,
00:36:32.340 multi-dimensional motivations.
00:36:34.500 Whatever characterizes those
00:36:36.240 more realistic people
00:36:37.940 isn't reducible
00:36:40.200 to any single attribute.
00:36:41.920 And in a complicated work of fiction,
00:36:45.540 the author walks you through
00:36:47.520 a multi-dimensional characterization.
00:36:50.700 You see the same person,
00:36:52.360 the hero,
00:36:53.420 aiming upward,
00:36:54.500 the anti-hero or villain,
00:36:55.900 aiming downward.
00:36:56.900 You see that person
00:36:58.160 portrayed in multiple
00:36:59.440 different situations.
00:37:01.920 And as a,
00:37:02.380 and, and, and
00:37:03.220 pursuing
00:37:04.820 partial
00:37:06.340 reflections of their ultimate aim.
00:37:09.400 And in consequence of that,
00:37:11.020 you
00:37:12.020 learn to
00:37:13.840 understand and embody
00:37:15.300 that
00:37:16.640 complex of aims.
00:37:20.500 When you see a movie
00:37:21.660 and you watch the hero,
00:37:23.700 you're watching the hero
00:37:24.720 to learn how to act
00:37:25.940 like a hero.
00:37:27.540 When you're
00:37:28.340 watching a movie
00:37:29.460 and you watch the anti-hero
00:37:30.780 or the villain,
00:37:31.620 you're watching
00:37:32.280 the movie
00:37:33.140 to learn how
00:37:34.040 not to fail
00:37:34.960 catastrophically
00:37:36.000 and land in hell
00:37:37.140 while taking everyone else
00:37:39.300 along with you.
00:37:40.060 is it reducible
00:37:43.020 to something as simple
00:37:46.080 as power
00:37:47.360 or sex?
00:37:49.540 Not if it's not
00:37:50.520 a comic book.
00:37:51.740 You need a
00:37:52.540 multi-dimensional
00:37:53.220 characterization.
00:37:54.920 All right.
00:37:56.600 The biblical corpus
00:37:58.000 provides a
00:37:58.680 multi-dimensional
00:37:59.560 characterization
00:38:00.560 of the fundamental
00:38:01.840 aim of
00:38:03.300 man and
00:38:05.020 cosmos.
00:38:05.640 that's the claim
00:38:07.380 of the book.
00:38:08.060 So I'm going to walk you
00:38:08.940 through some of the stories
00:38:09.840 and show you
00:38:11.620 what's being revealed.
00:38:14.920 What's being revealed
00:38:15.960 is the proper object
00:38:17.360 of worship.
00:38:18.460 Okay.
00:38:18.800 So what does that mean?
00:38:19.640 The proper object
00:38:20.600 of celebration.
00:38:21.920 The aim towards
00:38:23.820 which all sacrifices
00:38:25.140 and work
00:38:25.740 are to be directed.
00:38:26.640 that which should be
00:38:28.480 held in the highest
00:38:29.360 regard.
00:38:30.600 That which should be
00:38:31.780 imitated in ritual
00:38:33.900 and admiration.
00:38:36.500 Okay.
00:38:36.740 So that's the
00:38:37.360 that's the idea.
00:38:40.760 Admiration in the same way
00:38:42.180 that a small child
00:38:43.360 who
00:38:43.760 hero worships
00:38:45.640 worships
00:38:46.280 the boy down the street
00:38:50.460 who's
00:38:51.060 the baseball star
00:38:53.060 because that boy
00:38:55.240 portrays a pattern
00:38:58.220 of skill
00:38:58.840 and attention
00:38:59.560 that
00:39:00.960 is the next
00:39:02.240 appropriate
00:39:02.840 developmental step
00:39:04.060 for the hero
00:39:04.680 worshiping child.
00:39:06.320 That's a recreation
00:39:07.500 of the religious
00:39:08.580 impulse.
00:39:10.820 The impulse to look up
00:39:11.900 admire and imitate.
00:39:13.800 The question being
00:39:14.660 what to what should we
00:39:15.980 address our attention
00:39:17.180 upward looking
00:39:18.160 admire and imitate.
00:39:22.540 That
00:39:23.340 highest possible
00:39:25.340 object of
00:39:27.220 apprehension
00:39:28.560 and admiration
00:39:29.280 is by definition
00:39:31.920 God.
00:39:34.680 It's a definition.
00:39:37.240 It's
00:39:37.760 the highest aim
00:39:39.800 that lurks
00:39:40.340 behind all proximal aims.
00:39:42.280 That's a good way
00:39:42.920 of thinking about it.
00:39:43.740 It's the upward aim
00:39:44.820 as such.
00:39:46.540 Alright.
00:39:47.260 How do you bring
00:39:48.140 that down to earth?
00:39:49.200 Well let's start
00:39:49.740 with Genesis 1.
00:39:51.760 There's a characterization
00:39:52.620 of God and man
00:39:53.780 in Genesis 1.
00:39:57.620 The
00:39:58.140 story opens
00:40:00.020 at the dawn of time.
00:40:01.660 At the beginning
00:40:02.560 of things.
00:40:03.180 That's not exactly
00:40:04.740 the beginning of time.
00:40:05.980 That's usually how
00:40:06.660 it's read
00:40:07.020 but it's more complex
00:40:07.900 than that.
00:40:08.300 It's not only
00:40:09.880 the beginning
00:40:11.060 of time
00:40:11.780 in the linear sense
00:40:13.000 but it's the beginning
00:40:14.200 of all things
00:40:15.000 that begin.
00:40:16.180 This is what happens
00:40:16.980 every time something
00:40:18.100 begins.
00:40:18.980 This is what happens
00:40:19.620 every time
00:40:20.320 something new
00:40:21.400 makes its entry
00:40:22.500 into the world.
00:40:23.760 It's the continual
00:40:25.080 beginning
00:40:25.760 that continually
00:40:27.080 unfolds
00:40:28.040 that happened
00:40:28.960 and is happening
00:40:30.120 now
00:40:30.420 and will always
00:40:31.780 happen.
00:40:32.120 It's the pattern
00:40:34.060 of
00:40:34.380 the emergence
00:40:36.560 of order
00:40:37.280 out of chaos
00:40:38.460 that
00:40:39.340 makes itself
00:40:40.540 manifest
00:40:41.320 in the form
00:40:45.720 of your life.
00:40:48.620 How is the stage
00:40:49.940 set?
00:40:50.880 The spirit
00:40:51.480 of God
00:40:52.100 hovers
00:40:55.560 over the water
00:40:56.380 over the deep.
00:40:59.140 You hear
00:41:00.140 that
00:41:00.520 in the Judeo-Christian
00:41:03.200 tradition
00:41:04.200 God
00:41:05.060 engenders
00:41:07.240 the world
00:41:07.720 ex nihilo
00:41:08.600 out of nothing.
00:41:10.040 That's not how
00:41:10.700 the story
00:41:11.080 sets itself up.
00:41:12.580 It sets itself up
00:41:13.800 with the spirit
00:41:14.360 of God
00:41:14.900 hovering above
00:41:16.560 the waters
00:41:17.120 but it's not
00:41:18.060 water.
00:41:19.100 That's not the word.
00:41:20.320 Water is one
00:41:20.980 of the symbolic
00:41:21.720 images
00:41:24.240 attempting
00:41:25.420 to make
00:41:26.020 what's being
00:41:27.580 described
00:41:28.060 clear
00:41:28.560 using
00:41:30.400 a sequence
00:41:31.600 of complex
00:41:32.240 metaphors.
00:41:33.400 The word
00:41:33.900 for the water
00:41:35.580 over which
00:41:36.320 the spirit
00:41:36.820 of God
00:41:37.160 hovers
00:41:37.500 is
00:41:37.760 tohu
00:41:38.220 vabohu
00:41:38.920 or tehom
00:41:39.920 and it
00:41:40.580 means
00:41:41.000 a lot
00:41:41.860 of things.
00:41:43.080 It means
00:41:43.560 the
00:41:45.880 dragon
00:41:47.480 that lives
00:41:48.020 at the bottom
00:41:48.560 of the deepest
00:41:49.220 well.
00:41:50.400 It means
00:41:51.060 the
00:41:51.880 unplumbable
00:41:53.220 depths
00:41:53.680 of the
00:41:54.400 most
00:41:55.480 abysmal
00:41:56.040 ocean.
00:41:57.020 It means
00:41:57.600 the water
00:41:58.380 that brings
00:41:58.920 forth
00:41:59.280 life.
00:42:00.380 It means
00:42:00.760 the
00:42:01.040 infinite
00:42:04.560 well
00:42:05.020 of
00:42:05.200 possibility
00:42:06.020 itself.
00:42:07.880 It means
00:42:08.620 the confusion
00:42:10.220 that reigns
00:42:11.100 when your
00:42:11.500 world
00:42:11.940 falls apart.
00:42:14.160 It means
00:42:15.340 the
00:42:16.380 unstructured
00:42:18.840 day
00:42:20.120 that
00:42:20.900 makes
00:42:21.880 itself
00:42:22.260 manifest
00:42:22.740 when you
00:42:23.860 wake up.
00:42:24.420 it means
00:42:26.220 all of
00:42:26.600 that.
00:42:27.240 It means
00:42:27.900 the dragon
00:42:29.160 that the
00:42:29.840 archaic
00:42:30.520 god
00:42:31.020 sliced
00:42:31.920 into pieces
00:42:32.580 and made
00:42:33.020 the world
00:42:33.400 from.
00:42:34.580 It means
00:42:35.420 it's the
00:42:36.500 hydra
00:42:36.920 that Hercules
00:42:37.660 defeats
00:42:38.940 to
00:42:39.700 form the
00:42:40.840 world.
00:42:41.880 It's all
00:42:42.600 of that.
00:42:43.980 So what
00:42:44.760 does that
00:42:45.100 mean?
00:42:46.860 It means
00:42:47.740 that
00:42:48.080 the spirit
00:42:49.420 of being
00:42:49.960 and becoming
00:42:50.680 generates
00:42:51.600 the world
00:42:52.180 from
00:42:52.480 possibility.
00:42:53.080 possibility.
00:42:54.380 What does
00:42:55.100 that mean?
00:42:56.140 That's what
00:42:56.600 your consciousness
00:42:57.200 does.
00:42:58.560 That's what
00:42:59.160 you do.
00:43:00.280 See,
00:43:00.500 you think
00:43:00.940 you're
00:43:01.160 surrounded
00:43:01.520 by a
00:43:01.940 world
00:43:02.180 of
00:43:02.340 objects
00:43:02.720 that
00:43:02.960 you
00:43:03.120 manipulate
00:43:03.660 in
00:43:03.940 a
00:43:04.060 robotic
00:43:04.400 fashion,
00:43:05.380 but
00:43:05.580 you're
00:43:06.140 not
00:43:06.360 concerned
00:43:06.940 with
00:43:07.340 the
00:43:07.960 objects
00:43:08.480 that
00:43:08.740 are
00:43:08.900 static.
00:43:09.940 You're
00:43:10.360 concerned
00:43:10.860 with
00:43:11.140 what
00:43:11.360 you
00:43:11.600 can
00:43:11.840 dynamically
00:43:12.420 transform.
00:43:13.880 When
00:43:14.300 you
00:43:14.520 wake
00:43:14.760 up
00:43:14.940 in
00:43:15.040 the
00:43:15.140 morning,
00:43:15.460 what
00:43:15.620 presents
00:43:16.080 itself
00:43:16.520 to
00:43:16.760 you
00:43:16.980 is
00:43:17.760 a
00:43:19.000 field
00:43:19.500 of
00:43:19.760 indeterminate
00:43:20.700 opportunity.
00:43:21.400 That's
00:43:23.200 why
00:43:23.360 you're
00:43:23.640 worried
00:43:24.180 or
00:43:25.860 perhaps
00:43:26.340 excited
00:43:26.920 because
00:43:27.560 you have
00:43:27.880 something
00:43:28.160 to
00:43:28.380 grapple
00:43:28.780 with
00:43:29.020 that
00:43:29.200 hasn't
00:43:29.680 yet
00:43:29.960 come
00:43:30.260 into
00:43:30.540 being.
00:43:31.700 The
00:43:32.140 possibilities
00:43:32.700 of the
00:43:33.040 day,
00:43:33.320 and you
00:43:33.460 might
00:43:33.600 think,
00:43:33.900 oh my
00:43:34.160 God,
00:43:34.700 I have
00:43:35.380 so many
00:43:35.780 things
00:43:36.020 to do,
00:43:36.580 I'm
00:43:36.860 overwhelmed,
00:43:38.020 it's
00:43:38.280 too much.
00:43:39.140 Well,
00:43:39.300 that's the
00:43:39.760 tohu
00:43:40.140 vabohu,
00:43:40.880 that's the
00:43:41.320 chaos and
00:43:41.960 confusion,
00:43:42.920 that's a
00:43:43.400 plethora
00:43:44.040 of
00:43:44.300 possibility.
00:43:45.240 You're
00:43:45.540 thinking,
00:43:46.020 oh my
00:43:46.480 God,
00:43:46.960 how many
00:43:47.400 ways are
00:43:48.100 there for
00:43:48.500 things to
00:43:49.080 go wrong?
00:43:49.740 Well,
00:43:50.380 that's the
00:43:50.820 multi-headed
00:43:51.420 serpent that
00:43:52.200 the hero
00:43:52.600 always
00:43:53.120 confronts.
00:43:55.220 And what
00:43:55.920 do you
00:43:56.140 have to
00:43:56.580 do with
00:43:56.940 that?
00:43:57.200 It's like,
00:43:57.540 well,
00:43:58.840 are you
00:44:00.460 going to
00:44:00.780 establish the
00:44:01.640 order that's
00:44:02.300 good in
00:44:03.440 the course
00:44:03.820 of the
00:44:04.100 day?
00:44:04.540 Because that's
00:44:05.260 what you're
00:44:05.560 called upon
00:44:06.060 to do.
00:44:06.480 And it's
00:44:07.260 your
00:44:07.620 recreation of
00:44:09.420 what God
00:44:09.980 himself does
00:44:10.840 at the
00:44:11.160 beginning of
00:44:11.700 time that
00:44:12.720 constitutes the
00:44:14.440 action of
00:44:15.300 your conscious
00:44:15.980 on the
00:44:16.560 possibility that's
00:44:17.640 in front of
00:44:18.500 you.
00:44:19.420 You have
00:44:20.200 a microcosm
00:44:22.200 of plenitude
00:44:24.060 and possibility
00:44:25.160 right in front
00:44:26.620 of you at
00:44:27.060 any moment
00:44:27.840 that you can
00:44:29.180 wrestle into
00:44:30.260 order if
00:44:31.600 your aim is
00:44:32.360 right.
00:44:34.080 The process
00:44:36.280 that God
00:44:37.880 relies on to
00:44:39.240 extract the
00:44:41.520 cosmos, the
00:44:42.660 order that's
00:44:43.300 good, from
00:44:44.520 the well of
00:44:46.600 unformed
00:44:47.640 possibility,
00:44:48.500 is the
00:44:50.280 word, it's
00:44:50.960 the logos.
00:44:52.180 What does
00:44:52.580 that mean?
00:44:57.880 How much
00:44:58.580 hell can you
00:44:59.100 bring into
00:44:59.460 being by
00:44:59.940 saying the
00:45:00.340 wrong words
00:45:00.800 to your
00:45:01.080 wife?
00:45:04.620 Right, now
00:45:05.280 your wife is
00:45:05.960 who she is,
00:45:06.740 but she's
00:45:07.040 also who she
00:45:07.680 could become,
00:45:08.540 as you've no
00:45:09.560 doubt noticed
00:45:10.180 many times.
00:45:11.480 And you
00:45:12.700 can extract
00:45:13.720 out something
00:45:15.940 good or
00:45:16.500 something terrible
00:45:17.460 from the
00:45:18.480 possibility she
00:45:19.380 represents with
00:45:21.020 the cautious
00:45:22.700 and loving
00:45:23.620 application of
00:45:24.760 your words or
00:45:25.640 with the
00:45:26.080 careful and
00:45:26.680 prideful and
00:45:28.080 dismissive
00:45:28.640 application of
00:45:29.420 your words.
00:45:29.900 and the
00:45:30.560 world you
00:45:30.960 live in
00:45:31.540 will be
00:45:33.620 radically
00:45:34.020 different
00:45:34.620 depending on
00:45:36.320 which of
00:45:36.620 those two
00:45:36.980 approaches you
00:45:37.580 apply.
00:45:38.360 And that
00:45:38.740 will be
00:45:39.000 exactly the
00:45:39.740 same with
00:45:40.980 anyone else
00:45:41.540 you talk to
00:45:42.200 and how you
00:45:42.780 treat yourself
00:45:43.480 and how you
00:45:44.260 interact with
00:45:44.840 the world
00:45:45.260 as such.
00:45:46.260 because there's
00:45:47.540 a provision
00:45:51.440 of possibility
00:45:52.640 that you're
00:45:55.060 offered as a
00:45:55.800 participant in
00:45:57.780 the process of
00:45:58.620 creation that
00:46:00.020 you formulate in
00:46:01.040 accordance with
00:46:01.640 your aim.
00:46:03.140 What's the
00:46:03.960 insistence in
00:46:05.080 Genesis 1?
00:46:07.560 Aim up with
00:46:08.620 love.
00:46:10.820 So if you
00:46:11.980 want to
00:46:12.280 establish the
00:46:14.260 paradise of your
00:46:15.100 household in
00:46:16.620 relationship to
00:46:17.420 your wife and
00:46:18.080 your children,
00:46:19.680 you aim at
00:46:21.020 what's best for
00:46:23.260 the best in
00:46:23.960 them.
00:46:25.040 You offer
00:46:25.980 them the
00:46:27.220 security that
00:46:27.920 you can
00:46:28.200 imagine.
00:46:29.220 That's the
00:46:29.920 walls of the
00:46:30.620 walled garden.
00:46:32.000 And you
00:46:32.600 present to
00:46:34.560 them the
00:46:35.860 challenge that
00:46:36.840 allows them to
00:46:39.500 unfold and
00:46:40.500 develop optimally.
00:46:42.700 And you do
00:46:43.700 that appropriately
00:46:44.900 if you're
00:46:46.140 aiming at
00:46:46.620 what's best,
00:46:48.100 what's
00:46:48.420 highest.
00:46:49.540 And that's
00:46:51.160 the spirit of
00:46:52.260 God that
00:46:52.880 makes itself
00:46:53.800 manifest on
00:46:55.280 the waters of
00:46:55.940 possibility.
00:46:57.320 That's the
00:46:58.440 embodiment,
00:46:59.860 the source,
00:47:01.660 the initial
00:47:02.460 source, and the
00:47:03.320 spirit of
00:47:04.280 upward aiming
00:47:06.520 ultimate love.
00:47:07.340 you can
00:47:10.960 understand this
00:47:11.740 by understanding
00:47:12.640 what sort
00:47:13.280 of walled
00:47:16.500 garden you
00:47:16.940 produce in
00:47:17.500 your own
00:47:18.540 household with
00:47:19.300 your aim.
00:47:22.460 God
00:47:23.100 wrestles with
00:47:27.700 the possibility
00:47:29.420 that's not yet
00:47:31.140 manifest and
00:47:32.220 creates the
00:47:33.520 cosmic order as
00:47:34.420 consequence in
00:47:35.320 sequence.
00:47:37.980 Creating the
00:47:38.800 fundamental
00:47:39.260 divisions to
00:47:40.000 begin with.
00:47:40.820 The separation
00:47:41.600 of light and
00:47:42.460 darkness, that's
00:47:43.800 the phenomenology of
00:47:44.840 day and night, the
00:47:45.780 separation of the
00:47:46.560 land from the
00:47:47.180 waters, the
00:47:48.220 establishment of
00:47:49.060 the dome of the
00:47:49.860 sky over the
00:47:51.220 disk of the
00:47:51.920 earth, populates
00:47:54.620 the world with
00:47:56.320 its created
00:47:57.860 beings, and on
00:48:00.840 the sixth day
00:48:01.720 produces man, and
00:48:05.940 says in his
00:48:08.720 own image.
00:48:11.060 So now we
00:48:12.080 have a
00:48:12.340 characterization of
00:48:13.380 God who's the
00:48:15.380 dynamic process
00:48:17.000 that gives rise
00:48:18.160 to order from
00:48:19.940 possibility itself
00:48:22.340 in keeping with
00:48:24.000 the highest
00:48:24.460 possible aim, and
00:48:26.080 we have a
00:48:26.520 characterization of
00:48:27.500 the human being
00:48:28.340 as a microcosm of
00:48:29.600 that process.
00:48:32.360 The notion
00:48:33.880 that each of
00:48:35.220 us has a
00:48:37.260 worth that's
00:48:38.220 transcendental
00:48:40.180 and not given
00:48:42.040 by the state, not
00:48:43.380 given by yourself, not
00:48:44.480 given by other
00:48:45.140 individuals, is
00:48:46.720 predicated on
00:48:48.720 that image.
00:48:51.320 I mean that
00:48:51.880 historically, and I
00:48:52.760 mean it
00:48:52.980 conceptually.
00:48:54.480 The notion
00:48:54.980 is that, one
00:48:57.820 of the notions
00:48:58.460 is that the
00:48:59.060 state itself
00:49:00.120 has to grant
00:49:02.440 to you
00:49:02.980 the worth
00:49:04.440 of
00:49:04.920 someone
00:49:07.260 created in
00:49:08.020 the image
00:49:08.420 of the
00:49:09.760 creator himself
00:49:10.740 in order
00:49:11.820 even for
00:49:13.100 the state
00:49:13.920 to exist,
00:49:15.700 maintain itself,
00:49:16.660 and transform.
00:49:18.080 That the
00:49:18.840 state itself
00:49:19.520 cannot function
00:49:20.580 unless it
00:49:22.080 establishes a
00:49:25.300 sacred boundary
00:49:26.160 between its
00:49:26.920 operations
00:49:27.620 and the
00:49:28.660 operation of
00:49:29.500 the psyche,
00:49:31.420 the human
00:49:31.780 psyche, the
00:49:32.420 human spirit
00:49:33.060 that's a
00:49:33.880 manifestation of
00:49:35.000 the God
00:49:35.940 who generates
00:49:36.700 the order
00:49:37.120 that's good
00:49:37.600 from possibility.
00:49:39.380 And you
00:49:39.920 might ask,
00:49:41.420 well who
00:49:42.340 believes that?
00:49:43.640 And I
00:49:43.940 would say,
00:49:45.060 try talking
00:49:46.280 to one
00:49:46.940 person
00:49:47.540 once
00:49:48.560 without
00:49:49.880 believing that
00:49:50.800 and see
00:49:52.100 how it
00:49:52.500 goes.
00:49:53.640 We call to
00:49:54.460 each other
00:49:54.860 all the
00:49:55.140 time,
00:49:55.460 especially in
00:49:56.020 our intimate
00:49:56.400 relationships,
00:49:57.720 to be
00:49:58.460 treated as
00:49:59.420 if we
00:50:00.340 are the
00:50:01.300 locus of
00:50:02.500 value.
00:50:03.260 And if
00:50:05.180 you treat
00:50:05.600 people that
00:50:06.180 way,
00:50:07.040 if you
00:50:07.800 regard them
00:50:08.460 that way,
00:50:08.820 if you
00:50:09.020 perceive them
00:50:09.660 that way,
00:50:10.360 if you
00:50:10.800 encourage them
00:50:11.620 in that
00:50:12.260 pathway of
00:50:12.800 development,
00:50:14.660 everything
00:50:18.280 in your
00:50:19.940 interactions
00:50:20.780 with human
00:50:21.380 beings will
00:50:21.940 open itself
00:50:22.840 up to you
00:50:23.420 and fill
00:50:24.800 your life
00:50:25.260 with abundance.
00:50:26.900 Everyone
00:50:27.420 wants to be
00:50:28.080 treated that
00:50:28.580 way.
00:50:29.620 And the
00:50:29.960 reason for
00:50:30.360 that is
00:50:30.820 it's in
00:50:32.780 keeping with
00:50:33.260 our
00:50:33.440 essential
00:50:33.760 nature.
00:50:35.440 And that
00:50:35.900 that
00:50:37.140 hospitable,
00:50:38.760 welcoming,
00:50:39.460 encouraging,
00:50:41.860 upward aiming,
00:50:43.360 loving
00:50:43.680 treatment
00:50:44.420 is the
00:50:46.120 aim
00:50:48.460 and attitude
00:50:49.840 upon which
00:50:50.680 the
00:50:53.480 soul,
00:50:54.320 the
00:50:54.540 soul,
00:50:56.900 the community
00:50:57.460 and the
00:50:58.660 natural
00:50:59.020 order itself
00:50:59.900 depends for
00:51:01.300 its
00:51:01.460 integrity.
00:51:02.780 your
00:51:03.500 country
00:51:04.000 is
00:51:04.840 predicated
00:51:05.500 on that
00:51:05.940 notion.
00:51:06.920 The idea
00:51:07.380 that each
00:51:07.960 of you
00:51:08.360 is endowed
00:51:09.740 with
00:51:11.120 inalienable
00:51:11.720 rights
00:51:12.120 and their
00:51:13.600 requisite
00:51:14.140 responsibilities
00:51:15.040 is a
00:51:15.860 direct
00:51:16.340 reflection
00:51:17.360 of that
00:51:18.240 conceptualization.
00:51:19.320 And one
00:51:20.120 of the
00:51:20.360 things you
00:51:20.740 might
00:51:21.040 frequently
00:51:22.080 remind
00:51:22.620 yourself
00:51:23.120 of
00:51:24.340 is the
00:51:24.780 fact
00:51:25.040 that
00:51:25.400 your
00:51:26.840 country
00:51:27.160 wouldn't
00:51:27.460 be what
00:51:27.900 it is
00:51:28.400 which
00:51:29.040 is the
00:51:29.380 closest
00:51:29.800 approximation
00:51:30.700 to a
00:51:31.420 shining
00:51:31.760 city
00:51:32.760 on the
00:51:33.120 hill
00:51:33.400 that's
00:51:34.160 been
00:51:34.380 established
00:51:35.000 so far
00:51:35.900 in the
00:51:36.660 travail of
00:51:37.380 mankind
00:51:37.820 without that
00:51:38.880 fundamental
00:51:39.540 conception.
00:51:41.120 Right?
00:51:41.600 So then
00:51:44.980 you might
00:51:47.000 say well
00:51:47.460 is it
00:51:47.760 true?
00:51:48.240 And the
00:51:48.460 answer is
00:51:49.040 it's not
00:51:51.280 hell.
00:51:52.820 I mean
00:51:53.780 that because
00:51:55.020 lots of
00:51:55.560 countries are
00:51:56.180 hell and
00:51:57.820 they're hell
00:51:58.200 in a way
00:51:58.600 that opens
00:51:59.920 up into
00:52:00.580 an abyss
00:52:01.280 and has
00:52:02.480 the possibility
00:52:03.220 of a deeper
00:52:03.840 abyss
00:52:04.360 waiting latent
00:52:06.060 within it
00:52:06.680 which will
00:52:07.120 open up
00:52:07.700 with the
00:52:08.140 possibility
00:52:08.680 of a deeper
00:52:09.340 abyss
00:52:09.760 within that
00:52:10.820 and that's
00:52:11.960 what happens
00:52:12.540 when that
00:52:13.080 fundamental
00:52:13.800 characterization
00:52:15.200 is overthrown
00:52:17.920 in a
00:52:18.220 revolutionary
00:52:18.640 manner
00:52:19.220 or carelessly
00:52:20.320 abandoned
00:52:20.860 and we
00:52:21.740 saw that
00:52:22.380 for all of
00:52:23.380 us who
00:52:23.700 are non-believers
00:52:24.560 and no
00:52:25.520 longer
00:52:25.940 conceptualize
00:52:27.960 the metaphysical
00:52:29.700 hell is
00:52:30.180 real
00:52:30.520 we saw
00:52:31.440 the metaphysical
00:52:32.980 hell realized
00:52:34.060 in the 20th
00:52:34.800 century
00:52:35.140 many times
00:52:36.140 in case
00:52:37.440 anyone
00:52:37.960 having
00:52:40.980 abandoned
00:52:41.460 their
00:52:41.960 metaphysical
00:52:42.900 presuppositions
00:52:43.820 was so
00:52:45.540 blind that
00:52:46.220 only an
00:52:46.760 object lesson
00:52:47.480 would suffice
00:52:48.320 right
00:52:49.900 Nazi
00:52:50.560 Germany
00:52:51.080 the Soviet
00:52:53.400 Union under
00:52:54.160 Stalin
00:52:54.660 the Chinese
00:52:56.380 Communist Party
00:52:57.620 under Mao
00:52:58.220 if that
00:53:00.260 isn't close
00:53:00.820 enough to
00:53:01.320 hell
00:53:01.620 for you
00:53:02.560 then I
00:53:04.200 would say
00:53:04.740 you should
00:53:05.520 pray that
00:53:06.120 you aren't
00:53:07.380 introduced
00:53:07.840 to something
00:53:09.020 even worse
00:53:09.780 for the
00:53:11.480 purposes of
00:53:12.200 convincing you
00:53:13.140 about what's
00:53:14.120 real
00:53:14.460 in the
00:53:18.120 second
00:53:18.540 God
00:53:24.500 announces
00:53:24.920 two things
00:53:25.520 once he
00:53:25.960 three things
00:53:26.660 four things
00:53:27.340 once he
00:53:27.740 creates man
00:53:28.360 he says
00:53:28.820 man is to
00:53:30.700 tend the
00:53:31.120 garden
00:53:31.420 that's his
00:53:32.600 purpose
00:53:32.980 why a
00:53:34.500 garden
00:53:34.880 it's a
00:53:35.780 walled
00:53:36.120 garden
00:53:36.340 actually
00:53:36.700 because that's
00:53:37.160 what paradise
00:53:37.660 means
00:53:38.220 walled
00:53:38.720 garden
00:53:38.960 why a
00:53:39.680 walled
00:53:40.000 garden
00:53:40.280 well a
00:53:40.740 garden is a
00:53:41.280 place of
00:53:41.660 nature
00:53:42.020 obviously
00:53:43.360 and walls
00:53:44.600 are a place
00:53:45.080 of culture
00:53:45.660 and a
00:53:46.360 walled
00:53:46.700 garden is a
00:53:47.260 place of
00:53:47.640 nature
00:53:48.040 encapsulated
00:53:50.700 in a manageable
00:53:51.460 manner
00:53:51.960 by the walls
00:53:53.360 of culture
00:53:53.820 that's what your
00:53:54.600 backyard is
00:53:55.460 it's a yard
00:53:57.200 it's nature
00:53:57.840 it has walls
00:53:59.180 the walls are
00:54:00.020 culture
00:54:00.420 the walls
00:54:01.520 you could
00:54:01.860 think of
00:54:02.160 as physical
00:54:02.820 as physical
00:54:05.360 entities
00:54:06.140 as objects
00:54:06.800 but your
00:54:07.800 lawn has
00:54:09.140 borders
00:54:09.500 if you don't
00:54:10.020 have a
00:54:10.340 fence
00:54:10.720 and your
00:54:12.180 neighbors know
00:54:12.680 where the
00:54:12.920 borders are
00:54:13.600 and where
00:54:14.080 are the
00:54:14.260 borders
00:54:14.640 well they're
00:54:15.280 in the
00:54:15.500 imagination
00:54:15.880 of your
00:54:16.460 neighbors
00:54:16.840 I'm dead
00:54:18.920 serious about
00:54:19.620 that
00:54:19.940 the walls
00:54:21.160 it's so funny
00:54:21.880 because you'll
00:54:22.240 see people
00:54:22.740 in the border
00:54:23.240 between Canada
00:54:23.980 and the
00:54:24.220 United States
00:54:24.820 they'll get
00:54:26.120 out and
00:54:26.380 they'll step
00:54:26.880 across the
00:54:27.440 border
00:54:27.760 it's like
00:54:28.920 as if
00:54:30.760 it's an
00:54:31.100 object
00:54:31.540 as if
00:54:32.440 it's an
00:54:32.760 entity
00:54:33.120 that's
00:54:33.500 there
00:54:33.860 on the
00:54:34.960 ground
00:54:35.280 and people
00:54:35.900 know that
00:54:36.360 that's magic
00:54:37.080 in some
00:54:37.560 sense
00:54:37.840 because
00:54:38.140 the grass
00:54:39.500 in Canada
00:54:42.280 is only
00:54:42.940 slightly
00:54:43.500 less healthy
00:54:44.960 than the grass
00:54:45.660 in the United
00:54:46.160 States
00:54:46.680 let's say
00:54:47.940 it's easy
00:54:51.800 to concretize
00:54:52.600 that
00:54:52.840 but the
00:54:53.320 idea of a
00:54:54.920 walled off
00:54:55.420 space
00:54:56.040 in a
00:54:56.340 communal
00:54:56.660 society
00:54:57.300 is a
00:54:58.400 social
00:54:58.660 agreement
00:54:59.080 you have
00:55:00.380 your domain
00:55:00.960 your house
00:55:01.540 your garden
00:55:02.880 your backyard
00:55:03.480 that's enough
00:55:04.960 cosmos for you
00:55:06.020 to set right
00:55:06.780 and perhaps
00:55:07.720 if you're
00:55:08.080 competent enough
00:55:08.760 to do more
00:55:09.400 you'll expand
00:55:11.160 your garden
00:55:12.520 so that you
00:55:13.400 have more
00:55:13.720 to tend
00:55:14.220 but you
00:55:15.560 start with
00:55:16.380 a walled
00:55:18.460 garden of
00:55:18.860 some
00:55:19.240 size
00:55:21.340 and if you
00:55:22.240 tend it
00:55:22.660 properly
00:55:23.040 then the
00:55:23.900 promise is
00:55:24.520 that
00:55:24.820 as your
00:55:26.480 competence
00:55:26.900 grows
00:55:27.320 so will
00:55:27.860 your
00:55:28.220 dominion
00:55:29.220 man
00:55:32.420 sent
00:55:32.820 to
00:55:33.100 tend
00:55:33.340 the
00:55:33.500 garden
00:55:33.840 and to
00:55:35.000 name
00:55:35.420 everything
00:55:36.220 that's
00:55:36.500 in it
00:55:36.800 this is
00:55:37.440 Adam
00:55:37.720 what does
00:55:38.700 that mean
00:55:39.580 well it's
00:55:40.480 the logos
00:55:41.100 again
00:55:41.540 it's
00:55:41.840 a
00:55:42.000 re-representation
00:55:43.680 of the
00:55:44.200 creative
00:55:45.200 spirit
00:55:45.640 of God
00:55:46.200 that makes
00:55:47.140 itself
00:55:47.500 manifest
00:55:47.980 when
00:55:49.020 time
00:55:49.840 begins
00:55:50.240 and when
00:55:50.620 new things
00:55:51.160 come into
00:55:51.600 being
00:55:51.880 our
00:55:52.960 ability
00:55:53.340 to
00:55:53.600 name
00:55:53.940 our
00:55:54.180 ability
00:55:54.500 to
00:55:54.760 speak
00:55:55.460 is
00:55:56.300 that
00:55:56.660 in
00:55:57.460 the
00:55:58.040 microcosmic
00:55:59.000 manner
00:55:59.400 that's
00:56:00.040 what we're
00:56:01.500 capable of
00:56:02.120 doing
00:56:02.300 that's what
00:56:02.700 the patriarchal
00:56:03.740 spirit
00:56:04.160 does
00:56:04.700 is
00:56:04.980 name
00:56:05.740 and order
00:56:06.220 the world
00:56:06.820 and God
00:56:08.900 brings
00:56:09.300 everything
00:56:09.720 to Adam
00:56:10.100 to see
00:56:10.500 what he'll
00:56:10.820 name
00:56:11.080 them
00:56:11.240 and that's
00:56:11.680 a
00:56:12.000 reflection
00:56:13.600 of the
00:56:14.040 idea
00:56:14.400 that
00:56:14.720 we have
00:56:17.000 a created
00:56:17.540 order
00:56:17.900 but
00:56:18.160 man has
00:56:19.440 a place
00:56:19.880 in it
00:56:20.200 and the
00:56:20.480 place
00:56:20.780 is to
00:56:21.300 organize
00:56:22.440 it
00:56:22.820 and to
00:56:23.140 put
00:56:23.300 everything
00:56:23.800 in its
00:56:24.240 proper
00:56:24.580 place
00:56:25.020 and to
00:56:25.700 assign
00:56:26.180 it
00:56:26.360 its
00:56:26.740 identity
00:56:27.580 and that's
00:56:29.420 no different
00:56:30.020 than the
00:56:30.560 prioritization
00:56:31.620 of attention
00:56:32.360 that's part
00:56:33.500 of the
00:56:33.800 story
00:56:34.200 name
00:56:36.060 things
00:56:36.400 in
00:56:36.560 relationship
00:56:37.040 to their
00:56:37.460 function
00:56:37.880 put
00:56:38.380 things
00:56:38.660 in
00:56:38.860 place
00:56:39.260 in
00:56:39.580 relationship
00:56:40.800 to
00:56:41.340 their
00:56:41.740 significance
00:56:43.560 in the
00:56:47.400 hierarchy
00:56:47.960 of being
00:56:48.640 orient
00:56:50.140 them
00:56:50.520 orient
00:56:51.980 all
00:56:52.500 named
00:56:52.960 things
00:56:53.520 upward
00:56:54.140 sequence
00:56:55.940 constrain
00:56:57.760 organize
00:56:59.060 and order
00:56:59.640 the
00:57:01.040 manifestation
00:57:01.580 of the
00:57:02.140 patriarchal
00:57:02.720 spirit
00:57:03.140 what does
00:57:04.000 God
00:57:04.240 decide
00:57:04.700 that's
00:57:05.280 not
00:57:05.480 good
00:57:05.700 enough
00:57:06.100 man
00:57:08.060 lacks
00:57:08.540 a helper
00:57:09.440 man
00:57:10.060 needs
00:57:10.340 a helper
00:57:10.800 woman's
00:57:13.300 created
00:57:13.580 as a
00:57:13.940 consequence
00:57:14.360 because
00:57:14.980 the order
00:57:16.800 that men
00:57:17.600 produce
00:57:19.480 because of
00:57:22.040 their
00:57:22.400 limitations
00:57:23.600 is
00:57:24.620 insufficient
00:57:25.260 and
00:57:26.320 something
00:57:26.880 has to
00:57:27.340 be
00:57:27.500 introduced
00:57:28.060 to
00:57:28.520 speak
00:57:30.560 for that
00:57:31.160 which is
00:57:31.540 not
00:57:31.780 included
00:57:32.300 that's
00:57:34.180 the role
00:57:34.560 of woman
00:57:34.980 that's
00:57:36.360 the
00:57:36.540 biblical
00:57:36.860 role
00:57:37.320 of the
00:57:37.600 woman
00:57:37.860 it's
00:57:38.660 the
00:57:38.820 biological
00:57:39.340 role
00:57:39.840 of the
00:57:40.120 mother
00:57:40.400 you know
00:57:41.280 this in
00:57:41.640 your
00:57:41.760 own
00:57:41.960 household
00:57:42.560 women
00:57:45.320 bring the
00:57:45.840 concerns
00:57:46.320 of the
00:57:46.800 marginalized
00:57:47.720 to the
00:57:48.740 center
00:57:49.040 you can
00:57:51.180 think about
00:57:51.540 that
00:57:51.780 politically
00:57:52.280 it's
00:57:53.520 useful
00:57:54.020 to think
00:57:54.720 about it
00:57:55.100 politically
00:57:55.520 all
00:57:56.580 established
00:57:57.460 human
00:57:57.860 orders
00:57:58.420 exclude
00:57:59.720 the
00:58:01.260 exclusion
00:58:01.760 causes
00:58:02.260 pain
00:58:02.880 the
00:58:03.780 pain
00:58:04.660 of
00:58:04.820 exclusion
00:58:05.320 requires
00:58:05.900 a
00:58:06.140 voice
00:58:06.700 that's
00:58:08.280 the
00:58:08.420 voice
00:58:08.660 of the
00:58:08.960 eternal
00:58:09.300 mother
00:58:09.660 that's
00:58:13.020 where
00:58:13.180 Genesis
00:58:13.580 1
00:58:13.960 ends
00:58:14.340 Genesis
00:58:16.480 2
00:58:16.880 begins
00:58:17.360 contains
00:58:18.680 the
00:58:18.920 story
00:58:19.220 of
00:58:19.360 Adam
00:58:19.580 and
00:58:19.720 Eve
00:58:19.960 it's
00:58:20.580 another
00:58:20.920 creation
00:58:21.540 story
00:58:22.080 it's
00:58:23.920 commensurate
00:58:25.920 with the
00:58:26.340 first one
00:58:26.820 it's a
00:58:27.760 variation
00:58:28.320 on a
00:58:28.800 theme
00:58:29.080 God
00:58:32.400 creates
00:58:32.960 Adam
00:58:33.300 out of
00:58:33.880 matter
00:58:35.480 earth
00:58:37.060 and
00:58:37.940 breath
00:58:39.200 spirit
00:58:39.980 why
00:58:40.620 because
00:58:41.080 that's
00:58:41.380 what
00:58:41.520 human
00:58:41.860 beings
00:58:42.160 are
00:58:42.420 we're
00:58:42.840 material
00:58:43.900 creatures
00:58:44.460 that are
00:58:45.700 animated
00:58:46.800 anima
00:58:48.080 means
00:58:48.380 spirit
00:58:49.060 we
00:58:50.440 what's
00:58:53.660 the
00:58:53.880 spirit
00:58:54.400 the
00:58:56.500 spirit
00:58:57.020 is the
00:58:57.680 living
00:58:59.380 organizing
00:58:59.960 principle
00:59:00.460 of the
00:59:00.840 material
00:59:01.220 and human
00:59:03.020 beings
00:59:03.320 are an
00:59:03.620 amalgam
00:59:04.060 of
00:59:04.340 the
00:59:04.840 living
00:59:05.280 organizing
00:59:06.260 principle
00:59:07.120 and the
00:59:07.920 material
00:59:08.380 and that's
00:59:09.640 what's
00:59:09.860 portrayed
00:59:10.220 in the
00:59:10.740 creation
00:59:11.540 of
00:59:11.720 Adam
00:59:12.000 the
00:59:13.660 combination
00:59:14.020 of
00:59:14.420 matter
00:59:14.740 and
00:59:14.960 spirit
00:59:15.280 the
00:59:15.700 combination
00:59:16.120 of
00:59:16.440 material
00:59:17.700 and
00:59:18.320 conscious
00:59:18.820 you can
00:59:19.200 think about
00:59:19.520 it that
00:59:19.820 way
00:59:20.000 if you're
00:59:20.300 more
00:59:20.560 secular
00:59:21.360 minded
00:59:21.860 we're
00:59:22.860 conscious
00:59:23.380 matter
00:59:23.940 what's
00:59:26.540 up with
00:59:26.900 that
00:59:27.320 no one
00:59:28.780 understands
00:59:29.360 that
00:59:29.780 no
00:59:30.140 materialist
00:59:30.860 understands
00:59:31.380 that
00:59:31.680 we
00:59:32.220 understand
00:59:32.680 nothing
00:59:33.140 about
00:59:33.440 consciousness
00:59:33.960 it's
00:59:35.100 as
00:59:35.220 mysterious
00:59:35.620 now
00:59:36.020 as
00:59:36.160 it's
00:59:36.340 been
00:59:36.520 throughout
00:59:36.840 the
00:59:37.280 entire
00:59:37.600 course
00:59:37.940 of
00:59:38.080 our
00:59:38.200 existence
00:59:38.580 it's
00:59:39.580 never
00:59:39.820 been
00:59:40.040 reduced
00:59:40.400 to
00:59:40.580 material
00:59:41.000 phenomena
00:59:41.560 phenomenon
00:59:42.840 we have
00:59:43.220 no idea
00:59:43.620 what that
00:59:43.940 would
00:59:44.100 even
00:59:44.320 mean
00:59:44.580 and if
00:59:45.460 we
00:59:45.580 did
00:59:45.780 reduce
00:59:46.160 it
00:59:46.300 to
00:59:46.420 the
00:59:46.560 material
00:59:46.920 all
00:59:47.180 that
00:59:47.380 would
00:59:47.540 mean
00:59:47.720 was
00:59:47.940 that
00:59:48.100 we
00:59:48.320 inadvertently
00:59:49.300 elevated
00:59:49.800 the
00:59:49.980 material
00:59:50.400 we
00:59:52.000 treat
00:59:52.240 each
00:59:52.500 other
00:59:52.680 like
00:59:52.900 we're
00:59:53.060 conscious
00:59:53.460 we
00:59:54.400 presume
00:59:54.940 from
00:59:55.200 first
00:59:55.500 principles
00:59:56.000 that
00:59:56.820 we're
00:59:57.000 conscious
00:59:57.500 we
00:59:58.220 can't
00:59:58.500 even
00:59:58.680 distinguish
00:59:59.140 between
00:59:59.600 being
01:00:00.260 itself
01:00:01.000 and
01:00:01.280 being
01:00:01.520 conscious
01:00:01.980 and
01:00:03.120 so
01:00:03.380 that's
01:00:04.020 a
01:00:04.120 perfectly
01:00:04.400 reasonable
01:00:04.880 representation
01:00:05.460 of
01:00:05.960 man
01:00:06.680 woman
01:00:11.800 is
01:00:12.060 taken
01:00:12.380 from
01:00:12.640 man
01:00:13.000 from
01:00:14.800 a
01:00:14.980 rib
01:00:15.240 from
01:00:15.740 the
01:00:15.960 side
01:00:16.400 as
01:00:16.860 an
01:00:17.000 equal
01:00:17.300 there's
01:00:18.860 a
01:00:19.060 critique
01:00:19.580 of
01:00:19.980 patriarchal
01:00:22.000 judeo-christian
01:00:23.280 narrative
01:00:24.180 from the
01:00:25.220 resentful
01:00:25.740 feminist
01:00:26.200 side
01:00:26.760 that
01:00:27.440 makes
01:00:27.680 the
01:00:27.840 claim
01:00:28.060 that
01:00:28.260 the
01:00:28.420 biblical
01:00:28.700 narrative
01:00:29.140 is
01:00:29.400 for
01:00:29.540 example
01:00:29.920 radically
01:00:30.500 patriarchal
01:00:32.080 in its
01:00:32.380 orientation
01:00:33.020 dooming
01:00:34.260 women
01:00:34.580 to
01:00:34.800 subjugation
01:00:35.560 that's
01:00:37.400 a
01:00:37.540 preposterous
01:00:38.360 claim
01:00:38.740 by the
01:00:39.720 way
01:00:39.900 it's
01:00:40.600 not
01:00:41.000 only
01:00:41.240 false
01:00:41.900 it's
01:00:43.120 false
01:00:43.320 in a
01:00:43.560 very
01:00:43.700 particular
01:00:44.020 way
01:00:44.420 there
01:00:44.960 are
01:00:45.140 falsehoods
01:00:45.760 that
01:00:45.920 are
01:00:46.040 approximations
01:00:46.980 of
01:00:47.160 the
01:00:47.320 truth
01:00:47.700 there
01:00:49.260 are
01:00:49.420 falsehoods
01:00:49.980 so
01:00:50.340 deep
01:00:50.620 that
01:00:50.820 they're
01:00:51.000 the
01:00:51.180 exact
01:00:51.840 opposite
01:00:52.420 of
01:00:52.660 the
01:00:52.840 truth
01:00:53.140 and
01:00:53.880 the
01:00:54.060 truth
01:00:54.360 of
01:00:54.500 the
01:00:54.620 matter
01:00:54.840 is
01:00:55.120 that
01:00:55.440 right
01:00:56.540 from
01:00:56.900 the
01:00:57.120 first
01:00:57.580 words
01:00:58.180 the
01:00:59.440 biblical
01:00:59.960 library
01:01:00.560 is
01:01:00.860 miraculous
01:01:01.700 in its
01:01:02.340 insistence
01:01:03.840 that
01:01:04.500 women
01:01:04.900 like men
01:01:05.600 are made
01:01:05.980 in the
01:01:06.220 image
01:01:06.420 of
01:01:06.580 God
01:01:06.960 that
01:01:07.440 emerges
01:01:07.800 in the
01:01:08.140 first
01:01:08.340 chapter
01:01:08.760 and
01:01:09.340 that
01:01:09.620 Eve
01:01:10.780 is
01:01:11.080 the
01:01:11.300 equal
01:01:11.880 of
01:01:12.100 Adam
01:01:12.540 in
01:01:13.280 every
01:01:13.840 manner
01:01:14.360 although
01:01:16.880 complementary
01:01:17.580 and not
01:01:18.480 identical
01:01:18.960 and
01:01:20.440 our
01:01:21.360 society
01:01:21.900 is
01:01:22.180 riven
01:01:22.600 by
01:01:22.860 conflict
01:01:23.480 so
01:01:24.260 deep
01:01:24.660 that
01:01:24.980 we
01:01:25.980 now
01:01:26.240 doubt
01:01:26.520 both
01:01:26.880 of
01:01:27.020 those
01:01:27.220 propositions
01:01:27.960 there's
01:01:29.580 no
01:01:29.960 form
01:01:30.460 of
01:01:30.620 confusion
01:01:31.180 more
01:01:31.580 profound
01:01:32.040 than
01:01:32.320 that
01:01:32.640 sexually
01:01:35.260 reproducing
01:01:36.040 creatures
01:01:36.480 without
01:01:36.880 nervous
01:01:37.340 systems
01:01:37.740 can tell
01:01:38.160 the
01:01:38.320 difference
01:01:38.640 between
01:01:38.980 male
01:01:39.240 and
01:01:39.420 female
01:01:39.740 I'm
01:01:40.800 dead
01:01:41.180 serious
01:01:41.640 about
01:01:41.960 that
01:01:42.300 if
01:01:48.380 you
01:01:48.560 can
01:01:48.740 get
01:01:48.920 people
01:01:49.260 to
01:01:49.500 swallow
01:01:49.820 the
01:01:50.060 lie
01:01:50.300 that
01:01:50.500 there's
01:01:50.720 no
01:01:50.900 difference
01:01:51.260 between
01:01:51.600 men
01:01:51.800 and
01:01:51.960 women
01:01:52.180 there
01:01:52.640 is
01:01:52.840 no
01:01:53.340 lie
01:01:53.820 they
01:01:54.060 won't
01:01:54.440 swallow
01:01:54.900 right
01:01:55.980 so
01:02:01.100 God
01:02:01.620 makes
01:02:01.940 Adam
01:02:02.200 and
01:02:02.360 Eve
01:02:02.640 each
01:02:05.160 with
01:02:05.380 their
01:02:05.560 own
01:02:05.780 role
01:02:06.220 and
01:02:08.220 he
01:02:08.340 puts
01:02:08.560 them
01:02:08.700 in
01:02:08.840 the
01:02:08.940 garden
01:02:09.240 to
01:02:09.600 play
01:02:11.040 forever
01:02:11.720 under
01:02:12.500 the
01:02:12.700 watchful
01:02:13.140 eye
01:02:13.420 of
01:02:13.600 their
01:02:13.840 heavenly
01:02:14.540 father
01:02:14.960 and
01:02:16.000 he
01:02:16.140 tells
01:02:16.480 them
01:02:16.660 they
01:02:16.820 have
01:02:17.020 free
01:02:17.360 reign
01:02:17.680 in
01:02:17.820 the
01:02:17.940 garden
01:02:18.240 with
01:02:19.020 everything
01:02:19.380 delightful
01:02:19.860 that's
01:02:20.720 being
01:02:20.940 created
01:02:21.420 except
01:02:23.460 for
01:02:23.740 one
01:02:23.980 thing
01:02:24.300 they
01:02:25.600 are
01:02:25.700 not
01:02:26.040 to
01:02:26.320 eat
01:02:26.760 the
01:02:27.040 fruit
01:02:27.300 of
01:02:27.480 the
01:02:27.600 tree
01:02:27.880 of
01:02:28.400 the
01:02:28.520 knowledge
01:02:28.800 of
01:02:28.960 good
01:02:29.120 and
01:02:29.240 evil
01:02:29.460 so
01:02:35.480 what
01:02:35.620 does
01:02:35.720 that
01:02:35.900 mean
01:02:36.180 man
01:02:37.500 that's
01:02:38.420 a
01:02:38.560 mystery
01:02:38.920 I
01:02:40.620 spent
01:02:40.860 a
01:02:41.020 long
01:02:41.260 time
01:02:41.700 trying
01:02:42.780 to
01:02:42.960 crack
01:02:43.340 the
01:02:43.840 micro
01:02:44.320 narratives
01:02:44.720 in
01:02:45.000 the
01:02:45.140 story
01:02:45.380 of
01:02:45.520 Adam
01:02:45.720 and
01:02:45.860 Eve
01:02:46.060 and
01:02:46.240 it
01:02:47.720 wasn't
01:02:48.040 until
01:02:48.440 three
01:02:49.620 or
01:02:49.740 four
01:02:49.900 years
01:02:50.200 ago
01:02:50.420 that
01:02:50.680 I
01:02:51.340 think
01:02:51.780 I
01:02:51.980 started
01:02:52.380 to
01:02:52.580 understand
01:02:53.160 that
01:02:54.780 particular
01:02:55.360 fragment
01:02:55.880 of
01:02:56.080 the
01:02:56.200 story
01:02:56.440 friend
01:02:57.920 of
01:02:58.080 mine
01:02:58.240 he
01:02:58.400 is
01:02:58.580 here
01:02:58.780 Jonathan
01:02:59.240 Pajot
01:02:59.760 some
01:03:00.040 of
01:03:00.180 you
01:03:00.280 might
01:03:00.500 have
01:03:00.620 been
01:03:00.780 following
01:03:01.160 him
01:03:01.560 Jonathan
01:03:03.940 and
01:03:04.260 his
01:03:04.420 brother
01:03:04.700 Matthew
01:03:05.140 really
01:03:05.480 helped
01:03:05.740 me
01:03:05.900 crack
01:03:06.260 this
01:03:06.640 and
01:03:07.540 so
01:03:07.880 we're
01:03:08.820 here
01:03:09.140 I'm
01:03:10.500 here
01:03:10.660 with
01:03:10.860 Jonathan
01:03:11.240 and
01:03:11.440 a
01:03:11.580 number
01:03:11.760 of
01:03:12.000 my
01:03:12.420 other
01:03:12.660 colleagues
01:03:13.080 and
01:03:13.300 friends
01:03:13.620 right
01:03:13.920 now
01:03:14.160 with
01:03:14.340 the
01:03:14.480 daily
01:03:14.660 wire
01:03:14.880 recording
01:03:15.460 another
01:03:15.860 seminar
01:03:16.840 we
01:03:17.440 released
01:03:18.000 an
01:03:18.180 Exodus
01:03:18.500 seminar
01:03:18.980 we're
01:03:19.260 recording
01:03:19.620 a

01:03:23.820 through
01:03:24.040 that
01:03:24.360 and

01:03:26.060 so
01:03:26.260 you
01:03:26.420 know
01:03:26.600 that's

01:03:33.320 rule
01:03:33.700 do

01:03:40.080 that
01:03:41.780 should

01:03:47.740 is
01:03:47.900 predicated
01:03:48.380 on
01:03:48.580 the
01:03:48.720 idea
01:03:48.980 that
01:03:49.160 there's
01:03:49.360 an

01:04:00.060 undesirable
01:04:00.680 is
01:04:01.400 the
01:04:01.540 diabolical
01:04:02.220 and
01:04:02.420 the

01:04:18.720 in
01:04:18.900 the

01:04:19.340 that
01:04:19.620 the
01:04:19.900 fiction
01:04:20.260 describes
01:04:20.960 the
01:04:21.200 structure
01:04:21.700 through
01:04:22.000 which
01:04:22.340 you
01:04:22.580 see
01:04:22.920 the
01:04:23.120 world
01:04:23.440 fiction
01:04:25.100 as
01:04:25.380 the
01:04:25.560 deepest
01:04:25.900 form
01:04:26.340 of
01:04:26.520 truth
01:04:26.980 what
01:04:29.080 does
01:04:29.240 it
01:04:29.420 mean
01:04:29.740 to
01:04:30.120 eat
01:04:31.060 of
01:04:31.300 the
01:04:31.500 fruit
01:04:31.780 of
01:04:31.960 the

01:04:32.460 of
01:04:32.780 good
01:04:33.200 and
01:04:33.340 evil
01:04:33.580 when
01:04:35.220 Nietzsche
01:04:35.700 announced
01:04:36.260 the
01:04:36.520 death
01:04:36.780 of
01:04:36.980 God
01:04:37.340 in
01:04:37.980 the
01:04:38.180 late
01:04:38.520 1800s
01:04:39.940 he
01:04:40.340 said
01:04:40.620 something
01:04:41.140 that
01:04:42.420 he
01:04:42.560 believed
01:04:42.900 would
01:04:43.140 constitute
01:04:44.720 a
01:04:44.920 pathway
01:04:45.200 forward
01:04:45.560 he
01:04:45.740 said
01:04:46.080 we
01:04:47.220 have
01:04:47.500 dispensed
01:04:48.400 with
01:04:48.620 God
01:04:48.960 we
01:04:49.540 are
01:04:49.660 the
01:04:49.820 greatest
01:04:50.320 murderers
01:04:51.060 who
01:04:51.200 ever
01:04:51.460 lived
01:04:51.860 we
01:04:52.720 have
01:04:52.920 engaged
01:04:55.100 in
01:04:55.340 a
01:04:55.580 murder
01:04:56.280 so
01:04:56.600 profound
01:04:57.120 that
01:04:57.460 we
01:04:58.460 will
01:04:58.540 never
01:04:58.800 wash
01:04:59.200 away
01:04:59.400 the
01:04:59.580 blood
01:04:59.880 how
01:05:00.820 could
01:05:01.040 we
01:05:01.240 possibly
01:05:01.860 how
01:05:03.440 could
01:05:03.660 we
01:05:03.860 possibly
01:05:04.320 conduct
01:05:04.760 ourselves
01:05:05.200 in the
01:05:05.540 aftermath
01:05:05.880 of
01:05:06.760 that
01:05:07.000 murder
01:05:07.340 you
01:05:09.080 read
01:05:09.380 of
01:05:09.520 Nietzsche
01:05:09.800 as
01:05:10.100 a
01:05:10.280 triumphant
01:05:10.940 anti-christian
01:05:11.900 he
01:05:13.380 was
01:05:13.720 a
01:05:15.220 very
01:05:15.480 complicated
01:05:16.140 person
01:05:16.620 and
01:05:17.040 he
01:05:17.560 knew
01:05:17.740 perfectly
01:05:18.260 well
01:05:18.720 that
01:05:19.420 the
01:05:20.120 dissolution
01:05:20.720 of the
01:05:21.160 Christian
01:05:21.520 metaphysic
01:05:22.160 would
01:05:22.360 produce
01:05:22.780 a
01:05:23.000 cataclysmic
01:05:23.700 consequence
01:05:24.160 he
01:05:24.640 predicted
01:05:25.160 in the
01:05:25.500 late
01:05:25.660 1800s
01:05:26.380 that
01:05:26.620 Europe
01:05:27.440 would
01:05:27.700 turn
01:05:28.040 to
01:05:28.440 a
01:05:29.280 radically
01:05:29.740 resentful
01:05:30.680 egalitarian
01:05:31.620 communitarianism
01:05:33.920 that would
01:05:34.700 kill
01:05:35.120 tens of
01:05:36.040 millions
01:05:36.280 of people
01:05:36.780 which is
01:05:37.840 exactly
01:05:38.300 what
01:05:38.540 happened
01:05:38.900 and he
01:05:39.520 saw
01:05:39.740 that
01:05:39.960 coming
01:05:40.260 just
01:05:40.520 as
01:05:40.720 clearly
01:05:41.000 as
01:05:41.320 his
01:05:42.060 Russian
01:05:42.460 counterpart
01:05:43.160 Theodor
01:05:43.700 Dostoevsky
01:05:44.440 saw it
01:05:44.960 he
01:05:45.860 knew
01:05:46.080 what
01:05:46.300 would
01:05:46.440 rise
01:05:46.880 in the
01:05:47.260 aftermath
01:05:47.560 of the
01:05:48.020 death
01:05:48.240 of
01:05:48.400 God
01:05:48.680 he
01:05:49.140 knew
01:05:49.360 that
01:05:49.600 resentment
01:05:50.140 and
01:05:50.640 communitarianism
01:05:51.620 would be
01:05:51.940 one
01:05:52.340 temptation
01:05:54.060 and he
01:05:56.480 tried to
01:05:57.460 formulate
01:05:58.240 a
01:05:58.780 alternative
01:05:59.400 path
01:05:59.800 he said
01:06:00.240 we're going
01:06:01.320 to have
01:06:01.700 to create
01:06:02.220 our own
01:06:02.640 values
01:06:03.100 we're going
01:06:03.680 to have
01:06:03.940 to take
01:06:04.360 it upon
01:06:04.760 ourselves
01:06:05.280 to create
01:06:06.420 the moral
01:06:06.860 landscape
01:06:07.360 I read
01:06:10.520 that
01:06:10.880 and
01:06:11.400 I
01:06:12.280 understood
01:06:12.680 why
01:06:13.100 he
01:06:13.460 said
01:06:14.440 that
01:06:14.720 I
01:06:15.080 could
01:06:15.260 see
01:06:15.560 its
01:06:15.780 influence
01:06:16.280 on
01:06:16.560 clinical
01:06:17.120 psychology
01:06:18.340 for example
01:06:18.920 the notion
01:06:19.460 of the
01:06:19.780 self
01:06:20.080 actualized
01:06:20.760 person
01:06:21.200 the notion
01:06:21.920 that our
01:06:22.300 soul
01:06:22.640 should
01:06:22.900 unfold
01:06:23.440 in the
01:06:24.060 direction
01:06:24.440 that's
01:06:24.720 commensurate
01:06:25.240 with
01:06:25.620 the deepest
01:06:27.200 understanding
01:06:27.940 of our
01:06:28.360 subjective
01:06:28.960 selves
01:06:29.500 right
01:06:29.720 the radical
01:06:30.600 unveiling
01:06:31.560 of
01:06:31.800 subjectivity
01:06:32.660 self
01:06:33.480 definition
01:06:34.100 I am
01:06:35.600 what I
01:06:35.960 say
01:06:36.220 I am
01:06:36.800 which is
01:06:38.280 a radical
01:06:38.720 claim
01:06:39.060 in our
01:06:39.360 society
01:06:39.880 now
01:06:40.300 a claim
01:06:41.560 of
01:06:41.720 omniscience
01:06:42.280 not only
01:06:43.020 am I
01:06:43.440 who I
01:06:44.080 say
01:06:44.340 I am
01:06:44.840 you
01:06:45.520 better
01:06:45.800 act
01:06:46.200 like
01:06:46.480 I'm
01:06:46.840 who
01:06:47.000 I
01:06:47.220 say
01:06:47.440 I
01:06:47.660 am
01:06:47.940 that's
01:06:48.860 the
01:06:49.020 claim
01:06:49.400 of
01:06:49.600 the
01:06:49.780 radical
01:06:50.200 subjective
01:06:51.460 well
01:06:51.880 what's
01:06:52.120 wrong
01:06:52.360 with
01:06:52.540 that
01:06:52.720 claim
01:06:53.100 well
01:06:54.520 the
01:06:54.680 psychoanalysts
01:06:55.660 criticized
01:06:56.200 Nietzsche
01:06:56.580 very
01:06:56.920 effectively
01:06:57.420 they
01:06:57.660 said
01:06:57.880 look
01:06:58.140 how
01:06:58.640 are
01:06:58.740 you
01:06:58.820 going
01:06:58.920 to
01:06:59.000 create
01:06:59.220 your
01:06:59.400 own
01:06:59.540 values
01:06:59.900 when
01:07:00.120 you're
01:07:00.240 not
01:07:00.400 master
01:07:00.780 in
01:07:00.960 your
01:07:01.080 own
01:07:01.240 house
01:07:01.580 have
01:07:02.500 you
01:07:02.600 tried
01:07:02.860 telling
01:07:03.140 yourself
01:07:03.540 what
01:07:03.780 to
01:07:03.960 do
01:07:04.240 how
01:07:05.460 does
01:07:05.640 that
01:07:05.820 work
01:07:06.080 for
01:07:06.320 you
01:07:06.480 I
01:07:07.180 know
01:07:07.380 you're
01:07:07.640 just
01:07:07.840 your
01:07:08.080 own
01:07:08.260 obedient
01:07:08.600 servant
01:07:09.060 right
01:07:09.360 you're
01:07:09.620 so
01:07:09.840 morally
01:07:10.240 pure
01:07:10.580 you
01:07:10.760 just
01:07:11.000 tell
01:07:11.320 yourself
01:07:11.760 at
01:07:13.160 new

01:09:17.240 himself
01:09:17.640 the
01:09:17.880 spirit
01:09:18.220 of
01:09:18.400 pride
01:09:18.800 what
01:09:20.200 does
01:09:20.300 that

01:09:23.560 can define
01:09:24.020 the moral
01:09:24.340 order
01:09:24.700 what's

01:09:31.380 I

01:09:35.180 it's

01:09:46.880 of maternal

01:09:48.060 and if
01:09:51.500 you can't
01:09:51.880 see that
01:09:52.240 happening
01:09:52.580 in our
01:09:52.880 society
01:09:53.300 you're
01:09:53.560 blind
01:09:53.920 and
01:09:56.080 what's
01:09:56.340 the
01:09:56.500 sin
01:09:56.680 of
01:09:56.820 Adam
01:09:57.880 well
01:10:00.320 what do
01:10:00.600 men
01:10:00.760 care
01:10:01.040 about
01:10:01.360 women
01:10:02.400 care
01:10:02.740 about
01:10:03.120 properly
01:10:04.840 about
01:10:05.340 the

01:10:08.440 it's

01:10:13.620 virtue
01:10:14.000 and it
01:10:14.280 can be
01:10:14.700 inverted
01:10:15.860 and made
01:10:16.300 prideful
01:10:16.840 and trumpeted
01:10:17.520 and presumptuous
01:10:18.820 to
01:10:20.020 infantilize
01:10:20.720 the world
01:10:21.120 and to

01:10:25.320 of
01:10:25.820 worth
01:10:28.980 and honor
01:10:29.500 as a
01:10:30.180 mode
01:10:30.680 of
01:10:30.840 attaining
01:10:31.220 status
01:10:31.860 what's
01:10:33.380 Adam's
01:10:33.800 sin
01:10:34.040 what do
01:10:35.480 men care
01:10:35.900 about
01:10:36.160 impressing
01:10:37.020 women
01:10:37.400 men are
01:10:41.020 ambitious
01:10:41.400 fundamentally
01:10:42.160 to impress
01:10:42.840 women
01:10:43.200 for
01:10:45.520 better
01:10:45.780 or for
01:10:46.080 worse
01:10:46.460 what's
01:10:48.440 the
01:10:48.740 prideful
01:10:50.160 pathway
01:10:51.240 and
01:10:52.540 false
01:10:52.820 pathway
01:10:53.260 to
01:10:53.700 establishing
01:10:56.280 a relationship
01:10:56.920 with the
01:10:57.460 too
01:10:57.660 demanding
01:10:58.120 feminine
01:10:58.620 I've
01:11:01.220 got it
01:11:01.760 anything
01:11:03.800 you want
01:11:04.320 dear
01:11:04.600 right
01:11:06.420 and that's
01:11:07.160 Adam's
01:11:07.600 sin
01:11:07.880 he
01:11:08.500 Eve
01:11:09.500 hearkens
01:11:09.920 to the
01:11:10.220 voice
01:11:10.500 of the
01:11:10.880 serpent
01:11:11.260 and
01:11:12.220 clutches
01:11:12.620 it to
01:11:12.960 her
01:11:13.120 breast
01:11:13.560 despite
01:11:16.200 the
01:11:17.080 clear
01:11:17.560 injunction
01:11:18.260 from
01:11:19.100 the
01:11:19.340 divine
01:11:19.760 never
01:11:21.100 to do
01:11:21.500 that
01:11:21.840 and Adam
01:11:23.000 weakly
01:11:25.280 does
01:11:25.580 exactly
01:11:26.100 what
01:11:26.440 the
01:11:26.720 worst
01:11:26.960 part
01:11:27.220 of
01:11:27.320 his
01:11:27.540 wife
01:11:28.280 wants
01:11:28.700 and
01:11:29.980 so
01:11:30.260 here
01:11:30.840 we
01:11:31.000 are
01:11:31.240 folks
01:11:31.740 so
01:11:35.980 what's
01:11:36.220 the
01:11:36.360 consequence
01:11:36.740 of
01:11:37.020 that
01:11:37.260 well
01:11:38.540 the
01:11:39.480 scales
01:11:39.860 fall
01:11:40.120 from
01:11:40.340 their
01:11:40.500 eyes
01:11:40.760 and
01:11:40.900 they
01:11:41.040 notice
01:11:41.320 they're
01:11:41.540 naked
01:11:41.880 and
01:11:44.400 they're
01:11:44.560 deeply
01:11:44.840 ashamed
01:11:45.300 and
01:11:45.460 they
01:11:45.600 cover
01:11:45.820 up
01:11:46.160 they
01:11:47.640 become
01:11:47.900 self
01:11:48.200 conscious
01:11:48.700 okay
01:11:49.880 so
01:11:50.080 when
01:11:50.240 do
01:11:50.320 people
01:11:50.540 become
01:11:50.880 self
01:11:51.160 conscious
01:11:51.560 when
01:11:53.780 they
01:11:53.900 make
01:11:54.160 prideful
01:11:54.740 errors
01:11:55.260 when
01:11:56.740 you
01:11:56.880 over
01:11:57.180 reach
01:11:57.600 and
01:11:58.300 you
01:11:58.420 reveal
01:11:58.800 your
01:11:59.040 inadequacy
01:11:59.760 as
01:11:59.980 a
01:12:00.120 consequence
01:12:00.540 of
01:12:00.940 the
01:12:01.100 mismatch
01:12:01.640 between
01:12:02.000 your
01:12:02.380 pride
01:12:03.180 and
01:12:03.400 your
01:12:03.660 ability
01:12:04.460 you'll
01:12:05.260 be
01:12:05.400 ashamed
01:12:05.920 you'll
01:12:07.640 recognize
01:12:08.140 your
01:12:08.640 insufficiency
01:12:10.280 you'll
01:12:11.280 be
01:12:11.600 aware
01:12:12.800 of
01:12:13.020 yourself
01:12:13.480 as
01:12:13.740 an
01:12:13.920 isolated
01:12:14.500 entity
01:12:15.340 that's
01:12:16.060 all
01:12:16.220 to
01:12:16.360 become
01:12:16.680 self
01:12:17.060 conscious
01:12:17.600 psychologists
01:12:19.280 have learned
01:12:19.780 over the
01:12:20.060 last
01:12:20.260 40
01:12:20.560 years
01:12:20.840 that
01:12:21.020 there's
01:12:21.260 no
01:12:21.500 difference
01:12:21.920 between
01:12:22.340 being
01:12:22.620 conscious
01:12:22.940 of
01:12:23.160 yourself
01:12:23.420 and
01:12:23.660 being
01:12:23.840 miserable
01:12:24.220 those
01:12:25.640 are
01:12:25.760 literally
01:12:26.280 the
01:12:26.580 same
01:12:26.840 thing
01:12:27.200 if
01:12:28.180 you're
01:12:28.400 living
01:12:28.780 a
01:12:29.500 life
01:12:29.800 of
01:12:30.100 other
01:12:30.640 centered
01:12:31.200 communally
01:12:32.140 oriented
01:12:32.720 hospitable
01:12:34.060 calling
01:12:35.400 you're not
01:12:37.340 attending
01:12:37.800 to the
01:12:38.820 miseries of
01:12:39.520 your
01:12:39.680 isolated
01:12:40.200 self
01:12:40.680 if
01:12:41.760 you
01:12:41.900 stay
01:12:42.260 in your
01:12:42.740 bailiwick
01:12:43.520 and you
01:12:44.400 don't
01:12:44.860 put forward
01:12:46.020 your
01:12:46.380 hand
01:12:47.000 presumptuously
01:12:47.860 you can
01:12:49.280 live in the
01:12:49.880 absence of
01:12:50.480 painful
01:12:50.820 self
01:12:51.180 consciousness
01:12:51.680 pride
01:12:52.600 goes
01:12:53.400 before
01:12:54.820 a
01:12:55.000 fall
01:12:55.240 we
01:12:56.500 have
01:12:56.640 a
01:12:56.780 month
01:12:57.220 devoted
01:12:57.640 to
01:12:57.860 pride
01:12:58.120 in
01:12:58.280 our
01:12:58.440 culture
01:12:58.820 right
01:12:59.880 pride
01:13:01.800 goes
01:13:02.080 before
01:13:02.400 a
01:13:02.560 fall
01:13:02.720 you
01:13:02.900 know
01:13:03.040 this
01:13:03.260 in
01:13:03.380 your
01:13:03.500 own
01:13:03.660 life
01:13:03.960 you
01:13:04.940 can
01:13:05.120 ask
01:13:05.400 yourself
01:13:05.740 and this
01:13:06.080 has been
01:13:07.040 a
01:13:07.180 Christian
01:13:07.620 conundrum
01:13:08.860 since the
01:13:09.980 beginning
01:13:10.200 of time
01:13:10.600 is your
01:13:11.360 life
01:13:11.620 miserable
01:13:12.020 because
01:13:12.460 misery
01:13:12.920 is
01:13:13.140 baked
01:13:13.440 into
01:13:13.680 the
01:13:13.880 structure
01:13:14.200 of
01:13:14.380 the
01:13:14.500 world
01:13:14.760 or
01:13:15.460 is
01:13:15.640 your
01:13:15.760 life
01:13:15.980 miserable
01:13:16.340 because
01:13:16.680 you
01:13:16.900 do
01:13:17.220 stupid
01:13:18.120 things
01:13:18.540 and
01:13:18.740 refuse
01:13:19.120 to
01:13:19.380 learn
01:13:19.680 and
01:13:19.920 bring
01:13:20.240 endless
01:13:20.680 misery
01:13:21.120 on
01:13:21.440 yourself
01:13:21.900 in
01:13:22.140 your
01:13:22.300 presumption
01:13:22.860 and
01:13:23.380 you
01:13:23.500 know
01:13:23.600 you
01:13:23.720 might
01:13:23.880 say
01:13:24.100 a
01:13:24.220 little
01:13:24.360 column
01:13:24.700 A
01:13:24.940 and
01:13:25.060 a
01:13:25.140 little
01:13:25.260 column
01:13:25.580 B
01:13:25.860 and
01:13:26.380 fair
01:13:26.660 enough
01:13:27.020 but
01:13:27.500 you
01:13:27.680 certainly
01:13:28.180 know
01:13:28.500 that
01:13:28.780 the
01:13:29.200 most
01:13:29.480 painful
01:13:29.920 episodes
01:13:30.440 of
01:13:30.640 your
01:13:30.760 life
01:13:31.040 come
01:13:31.340 when
01:13:31.580 you
01:13:31.980 claim
01:13:34.960 falsely
01:13:35.580 to be
01:13:35.880 more
01:13:36.120 than
01:13:36.280 you
01:13:36.460 are
01:13:36.760 and
01:13:38.440 and
01:13:38.460 the
01:13:38.700 core
01:13:40.500 narrative
01:13:40.920 in
01:13:41.800 the
01:13:43.420 Christian
01:13:43.920 Judeo-Christian
01:13:44.940 ethos
01:13:45.460 is that
01:13:45.880 the fall
01:13:48.240 of man
01:13:48.600 into the
01:13:48.980 profane
01:13:49.360 world
01:13:49.580 is a
01:13:49.860 consequence
01:13:50.240 of
01:13:50.520 pride
01:13:50.800 and
01:13:52.380 that
01:13:52.580 is
01:13:52.740 really
01:13:53.120 something
01:13:53.480 worth
01:13:53.740 thinking
01:13:54.020 about
01:13:54.300 you
01:13:55.040 know
01:13:55.180 Adam
01:13:55.520 and
01:13:55.660 Eve
01:13:55.780 are
01:13:55.900 called
01:13:56.120 upon
01:13:56.400 to
01:13:56.580 work
01:13:56.940 in
01:13:57.240 misery
01:13:57.660 as
01:13:57.940 a
01:13:58.060 consequence
01:13:58.400 of
01:13:58.680 their
01:13:58.800 pride
01:13:59.120 well
01:13:59.960 could
01:14:00.700 you
01:14:00.860 work
01:14:01.100 joyfully
01:14:01.660 if
01:14:03.300 you
01:14:03.440 didn't
01:14:03.700 overreach
01:14:04.200 yourself
01:14:04.700 if
01:14:04.940 you
01:14:05.040 were
01:14:05.160 aiming
01:14:05.360 upward
01:14:05.700 properly
01:14:06.240 if
01:14:06.460 you
01:14:06.560 were
01:14:06.660 telling
01:14:06.940 the
01:14:07.180 truth
01:14:07.480 if
01:14:07.720 you
01:14:07.840 were
01:14:07.960 acting
01:14:08.320 communally
01:14:08.920 if
01:14:09.360 you
01:14:09.420 were
01:14:09.520 acting
01:14:09.760 in
01:14:09.920 relationship
01:14:10.400 to
01:14:10.660 what
01:14:10.800 was
01:14:10.960 highest
01:14:11.340 would
01:14:12.080 it
01:14:12.200 be
01:14:12.340 possible
01:14:12.780 that
01:14:13.040 your
01:14:13.220 work
01:14:13.500 would
01:14:13.660 be
01:14:13.840 joyful
01:14:14.300 and
01:14:15.160 bring
01:14:15.440 abundance
01:14:16.000 isn't
01:14:17.060 there
01:14:17.180 times
01:14:17.460 in
01:14:17.600 your
01:14:17.720 life
01:14:17.920 when
01:14:18.080 that's
01:14:18.340 happened
01:14:18.720 is
01:14:19.420 it
01:14:19.580 the
01:14:20.420 case
01:14:20.720 that
01:14:20.920 you
01:14:21.080 move
01:14:21.380 forward
01:14:21.860 in
01:14:22.120 misery
01:14:22.660 in
01:14:23.560 precise
01:14:23.980 proportion
01:14:24.520 to
01:14:24.800 the
01:14:25.020 pretension
01:14:25.620 of
01:14:25.860 your
01:14:26.040 aim
01:14:26.360 it's
01:14:29.360 worth
01:14:29.620 considering
01:14:30.320 it's
01:14:33.560 the
01:14:33.780 suspicion
01:14:34.400 that
01:14:34.720 arises
01:14:35.140 at
01:14:35.460 the
01:14:36.240 story
01:14:37.340 that
01:14:37.540 begins
01:14:37.900 history
01:14:38.340 because
01:14:38.680 it's
01:14:38.940 with
01:14:39.380 the
01:14:41.060 prideful
01:14:41.900 fall
01:14:42.360 of
01:14:42.780 Adam
01:14:43.480 and
01:14:43.600 Eve
01:14:43.740 that
01:14:43.900 history
01:14:44.440 begins
01:14:44.840 Adam
01:14:48.740 and
01:14:48.880 Eve
01:14:49.000 discover
01:14:49.360 they're
01:14:49.580 naked
01:14:49.860 and
01:14:50.260 they
01:14:50.540 hide
01:14:51.500 and
01:14:52.080 God
01:14:52.300 comes
01:14:52.540 along
01:14:52.820 and
01:14:52.980 says
01:14:53.260 Adam
01:14:54.380 where
01:14:54.620 are
01:14:54.820 you
01:14:55.100 and
01:14:56.360 Adam
01:14:56.600 says
01:14:57.000 I'm
01:14:57.660 over
01:14:57.880 here
01:14:58.160 I'm
01:14:58.980 hiding
01:14:59.580 and
01:15:00.960 God
01:15:01.180 says
01:15:01.380 why are
01:15:01.820 you
01:15:01.920 hiding
01:15:02.240 it's
01:15:02.580 a
01:15:02.720 foolish
01:15:03.040 thing
01:15:03.360 to
01:15:03.520 do
01:15:03.720 right
01:15:03.980 because
01:15:04.320 Adam
01:15:05.020 is
01:15:05.220 perfectly
01:15:05.600 aware
01:15:05.860 that
01:15:06.040 God
01:15:06.300 can
01:15:06.520 see
01:15:06.720 through
01:15:06.960 bushes
01:15:07.400 Adam
01:15:08.240 is
01:15:08.420 hiding
01:15:08.700 from
01:15:08.960 God
01:15:09.280 is
01:15:10.020 it
01:15:10.180 your
01:15:10.460 pathetic
01:15:11.540 self
01:15:11.940 consciousness
01:15:12.460 that makes
01:15:13.140 you hide
01:15:13.520 from
01:15:13.760 God
01:15:14.140 that's
01:15:15.780 a good
01:15:15.980 question
01:15:16.380 are you
01:15:17.140 not
01:15:17.480 everything
01:15:17.960 you could
01:15:18.500 be
01:15:18.740 because
01:15:19.400 you're
01:15:20.320 ashamed
01:15:20.780 of who
01:15:21.120 you are
01:15:21.580 that's
01:15:22.860 what that
01:15:23.180 story
01:15:23.520 indicates
01:15:24.120 and so
01:15:24.900 God
01:15:25.180 calls
01:15:25.520 Adam
01:15:25.760 on
01:15:25.940 he says
01:15:26.220 who
01:15:26.420 told
01:15:26.840 you
01:15:27.060 why are
01:15:28.460 you
01:15:28.580 hiding
01:15:28.900 and Adam
01:15:29.260 says
01:15:29.480 well
01:15:29.660 I'm
01:15:29.880 naked
01:15:30.200 and God
01:15:30.700 says
01:15:30.980 well
01:15:31.340 how do
01:15:33.240 you find
01:15:33.560 out that
01:15:33.920 you were
01:15:34.140 naked
01:15:34.460 how did
01:15:35.920 you find
01:15:36.500 out that
01:15:36.920 you were
01:15:37.240 inadequate
01:15:37.720 how did
01:15:38.980 you find
01:15:39.420 out that
01:15:39.880 you are
01:15:40.900 shameful
01:15:41.560 and Adam
01:15:42.860 says
01:15:43.180 you know
01:15:43.700 that woman
01:15:44.140 you made
01:15:44.580 me
01:15:44.900 it's her
01:15:46.700 fault
01:15:47.240 and that's
01:15:48.520 the second
01:15:49.040 sin of
01:15:49.520 Adam
01:15:49.720 and that's
01:15:50.080 another
01:15:50.320 indication
01:15:50.880 of the
01:15:51.340 non-patriarchal
01:15:52.640 nature
01:15:52.920 of the
01:15:53.280 text
01:15:53.660 you know
01:15:54.280 Eve
01:15:54.740 is the
01:15:55.060 first
01:15:55.420 human
01:15:56.540 being
01:15:56.820 to take
01:15:57.180 a bite
01:15:57.420 of the
01:15:57.660 apple
01:15:57.920 but Adam
01:15:58.380 follows
01:15:59.020 along
01:15:59.600 and it
01:15:59.880 isn't
01:16:00.120 obvious
01:16:00.460 to me
01:16:00.820 that the
01:16:01.220 follower
01:16:01.640 of sin
01:16:02.200 is in
01:16:02.840 a worse
01:16:03.360 better
01:16:04.020 moral
01:16:04.360 position
01:16:04.840 than the
01:16:05.220 initiator
01:16:05.920 and then
01:16:06.580 he compounds
01:16:07.160 his sin
01:16:07.720 like men
01:16:08.680 do
01:16:09.020 by blaming
01:16:10.060 the woman
01:16:10.580 why is
01:16:11.480 your life
01:16:11.780 so
01:16:11.980 well if
01:16:12.400 you had
01:16:12.800 my wife
01:16:13.380 man
01:16:13.660 you'd
01:16:14.020 know
01:16:14.320 it's
01:16:14.820 like
01:16:14.940 those
01:16:15.240 damn
01:16:15.620 women
01:16:15.960 it's
01:16:16.240 like
01:16:16.440 it's
01:16:16.800 a handy
01:16:17.200 excuse
01:16:17.700 for men
01:16:18.160 all the
01:16:18.480 time
01:16:18.860 to say
01:16:19.680 that
01:16:19.960 and it's
01:16:20.700 not least
01:16:21.240 because
01:16:21.580 men
01:16:21.900 can't
01:16:22.360 tolerate
01:16:22.760 being
01:16:23.020 rejected
01:16:23.460 by
01:16:23.720 women
01:16:24.040 and women
01:16:24.720 reject
01:16:25.120 them
01:16:25.280 all the
01:16:25.560 time
01:16:25.940 and the
01:16:26.720 reason
01:16:26.980 women
01:16:27.280 reject
01:16:27.660 them
01:16:27.820 is
01:16:27.920 because
01:16:28.080 they're
01:16:28.220 not
01:16:28.380 all
01:16:28.540 they
01:16:28.680 should
01:16:28.900 be
01:16:29.160 and so
01:16:30.760 of course
01:16:31.140 that makes
01:16:31.600 men
01:16:31.840 painfully
01:16:32.360 self-conscious
01:16:33.160 and makes
01:16:34.180 them shake
01:16:34.620 their fist
01:16:35.100 at God
01:16:35.580 and makes
01:16:35.960 them hide
01:16:36.560 and so
01:16:37.880 what God
01:16:39.220 says
01:16:39.560 and so
01:16:40.180 Adam reveals
01:16:41.180 himself
01:16:41.580 in this
01:16:41.960 pathetic
01:16:42.420 manner
01:16:42.840 it's like
01:16:43.140 he can't
01:16:43.500 even take
01:16:44.080 responsibility
01:16:45.280 for his
01:16:45.920 own misstep
01:16:46.680 he has
01:16:47.020 to blame
01:16:47.620 the thing
01:16:49.080 that's been
01:16:49.560 granted to
01:16:50.260 him as the
01:16:50.840 highest form
01:16:51.640 of gift
01:16:52.300 and not
01:16:53.260 only her
01:16:53.800 but God
01:16:54.740 whose fault
01:16:57.100 is it
01:16:57.420 well it's
01:16:57.800 not mine
01:16:58.480 it's probably
01:16:59.220 women's
01:16:59.900 fault
01:17:00.220 and if
01:17:00.600 it's not
01:17:01.020 women
01:17:01.300 it's
01:17:01.580 clearly
01:17:01.920 God
01:17:02.420 it can't
01:17:03.580 be me
01:17:04.200 so what
01:17:06.820 happens
01:17:07.200 well both
01:17:07.680 Adam and
01:17:08.020 Eve are
01:17:08.280 condemned
01:17:08.620 to suffer
01:17:09.200 in their
01:17:09.560 work
01:17:09.880 and that's
01:17:12.460 how history
01:17:13.080 begins
01:17:13.540 and that's
01:17:15.060 the situation
01:17:15.880 of
01:17:16.240 fallen
01:17:17.660 of the
01:17:18.740 fallen
01:17:19.020 world
01:17:19.420 and that's
01:17:20.460 the
01:17:20.780 description
01:17:21.800 of the
01:17:22.680 landscape
01:17:24.640 of
01:17:25.380 profound
01:17:28.400 fiction
01:17:28.900 that we
01:17:29.500 that we
01:17:31.260 inhabit
01:17:31.640 and that's
01:17:33.800 only
01:17:34.300 a tiny
01:17:35.620 fraction
01:17:36.220 of the
01:17:36.680 characterization
01:17:37.260 of
01:17:37.920 God and
01:17:38.900 man
01:17:39.160 in the
01:17:39.780 biblical
01:17:41.000 corpus
01:17:41.580 thank you
01:17:44.820 very much
01:17:45.320 thank you
01:17:54.740 thank you
01:17:55.300 Thank you.
