00:00:17.240 what it's done to everything from politics to church life to the economy,
00:00:21.220 and what to do about it.

00:00:36.080 This episode of the Kings Hall Podcast is brought to you by Defined Benefit Partners.
00:00:41.180 It's also brought to you by Private Family Banking.
00:00:43.640 And finally, this episode is brought to you by Squirrely Joe's Coffee.
00:00:47.900 In a recent Twitter post, Dr. Owen Strand wrote,
00:00:50.580 Something is wrong. I do mean deeply wrong with a number of self-professed reformed men.
00:00:56.600 There is a dark alchemy at work in our circles. Terrible ideas are being normed, end quote.
00:01:03.340 In response to this tweet, Pastor Andrew Isker wrote, quote,
00:01:07.880 When you have been marinated in the post-war liberal democratic moral consensus,
00:01:12.280 the views held universally by reformed Protestants and all the rest of Christendom do look like a dark alchemy.
00:01:18.900 This is, of course, an unstated reference to Eric Kahn's post about adoption, among other things.
00:01:24.740 But the truly dark spirit that is foreign to all of humanity until very recently
00:01:29.660 is that of universalism over and against particularity.
00:01:33.740 You see this for decades among middle-class conservative evangelicals
00:01:38.140 riddled with unspoken white guilt
00:01:40.040 who will go to great lengths and great expense to promote foreign missions and foreign adoption.
00:01:45.600 No one is saying any of those things are bad.
00:01:48.080 Of course, it is good to support the work of the church throughout the world
00:01:51.640 and to bring orphans out of dire poverty.
00:01:54.340 What is off about this is the priority for the very far away over against the very real needs
00:01:59.740 nearby. Not far from the large, wealthy evangelical church are communities that have been ravaged by
00:02:06.340 globalism. The entire Midwest is gutted, factories that paid a good wage gone, replaced by nothing
00:02:12.940 but fentanyl and meth. While the respectable evangelical crowd watched their IRAs and 401ks
00:02:19.300 grow fat due to the GDP gains from globalist devastation of our heartland, many people
00:02:24.780 very close by have suffered greatly. We will travel the far corners of the world to make
00:02:30.320 one convert while those nearest to us suffer. Who is my neighbor? The Pharisees once asked
00:02:35.820 Jesus. Universalism will say all humanity across the globe is our neighbor. But such
00:02:42.080 abstractions allow us to pretend that we are, quote, saving the world without having to
00:02:46.880 get our hands dirty. A few 20s in the offering plate for missions to Africa absolves a conscience
00:02:52.920 panged by historically unfathomable wealth, and we can watch our countrymen become further
00:02:59.100 racked by despair without feeling a thing. The MAGA chud is set upon by thieves and left to die. 0.97
00:03:06.660 Russell Moore and David French pass by on his left, not wanting to associate with such a deplorable 0.99
00:03:11.820 man. Owen Strand passes by on his rite in a hurry to give his next Jeremiah against Kinnism. But the
00:03:18.500 new Christian rite, dark alchemist, takes the man to the inn and pays to have him cared for.
00:03:24.400 Everyone wants to save the world, but no one wants to help mom with the dishes. Everyone wants to be
00:03:30.360 lauded for how much they care about foreign missions and foreign adoption, but no one wants
00:03:34.820 to minister to their own people who are discarded by every respectable person.
00:03:41.820 The King's Hall Podcast exists to make self-ruled men who rule well and win the world.
00:03:50.340 Well, gentlemen, welcome to another episode of the King's Hall Podcast.
00:03:53.940 I am one of your hosts, Eric Kahn, and I want to introduce the other hosts.
00:03:57.960 One of the most talented, handsome, brilliant, songwriting men that I know, Pastor Dan Burkholder.
00:04:03.540 I knew it was coming. It was great.
00:04:07.640 Thank you for that. I really appreciate it.
00:04:09.980 You know, that was a very glowing introduction, and I will own it completely.
00:04:13.640 And it is all true.
00:04:15.020 Oh, and Brian's here, too.
00:04:16.480 Well, I mean.
00:04:16.920 And also, Pastor Brian Sauve, one of the most honest, direct, Puddle Glum-like characters that I know.
00:04:23.180 Wait a minute.
00:04:23.720 Are we confusing people now?
00:04:24.680 Thank you, Eric.
00:04:25.500 Oh, I miss reading my notes.
00:04:27.080 That's what's happening.
00:04:27.440 No, I won't.
00:04:28.340 I like being Puddle Glum's a Chad King.
00:04:29.940 Puddle Glum, that is a compliment.
00:04:31.620 Puddle Glum's a Chad King.
00:04:32.340 High compliment.
00:04:32.800 Yeah.
00:04:33.140 I mean, wow.
00:04:33.760 We actually, as a teaser, so Dan and I had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Joe Rigney.
00:04:39.300 Yes.
00:04:39.560 We were talking about Narnia and Dan had asked him a really interesting question.
00:04:43.540 He said, who's your favorite character?
00:04:45.140 Yeah.
00:04:45.420 Yeah.
00:04:45.720 He said King Loon.
00:04:46.840 King Loon.
00:04:47.360 Obviously.
00:04:48.300 But the second was Puddleglum.
00:04:50.660 And I said, I relate to that.
00:04:52.760 Puddleglum and I have similar demeanors and dispensate, you know, and, but maybe not with
00:04:58.240 the virtue.
00:04:58.900 I don't know.
00:04:59.340 We'll find out.
00:05:00.300 I mean, I haven't had any witch fires to put out yet with my bare feet.
00:05:03.180 It would be rather, you know, boastful of anybody to say like, yeah, one of the greatest characters demonstrating astonishing virtue in the face of certain death and bewitchment far in the deeps of the earth.
00:05:15.500 Yeah, I'm exactly like him.
00:05:17.180 I mean.
00:05:17.960 Well, I mean.
00:05:18.680 I was hoping somebody else would say it.
00:05:20.260 I'm Aslan.
00:05:22.280 I really identify the most with Aslan.
00:05:24.600 Actually.
00:05:25.380 So I chose Reepercheep.
00:05:26.880 I was like.
00:05:27.780 Yeah.
00:05:28.160 It's just a spicy little mice, you know.
00:05:30.280 You'd remind me somewhat of Reepercheep.
00:05:33.180 In many, many regards, like the speed with which Reepicheep will draw his sword to attempt to duel other people, even close friends.
00:05:43.660 That's what I mean.
00:05:44.380 It's so great.
00:05:45.540 Honor demands it.
00:05:46.940 Honor demands it. 1.00
00:05:47.860 I will kill you right now. 1.00
00:05:49.700 That's right. 0.96
00:05:50.760 Gentlemen, it's actually a good tie-in to the topic for this podcast.
00:05:54.660 We'll be talking about adoption.
00:05:56.600 Brian said some things on Twitter that were taken out of hand and out of context.
00:06:01.280 Oh, I mean, I did.
00:06:02.980 People keep tagging me, so might as well.
00:06:06.420 Come get your boy.
00:06:07.380 Might as well.
00:06:08.340 This is how I know that an Eric Kahn tweet has gone truly far.
00:06:12.220 When people on Facebook begin to tag me about it, that's when I know.
00:06:16.780 It has escaped the bounds of the Zoomers, and the Boomers have found the tweet.
00:06:22.180 The Boomers don't care.
00:06:23.260 Yes, and there were plenty of people in plenty of places to be upset about this.
00:06:28.080 So, Dan, I'm actually going to ask you to do the honors of reading this glorious.
00:06:32.880 Reading your words.
00:06:34.240 Glorious tweet that, I don't know, it upsets some people, but here it is.
00:06:39.060 Yeah, this is from at Eric underscore Khan.
00:06:42.540 That's me.
00:06:43.120 Yep, that's you.
00:06:43.800 There is no moral obligation to adopt children, not from the ghetto, Sudan, or Russia.
00:06:50.600 Contra the trendy movement led by Russ Moore and David Platt, the gospel does not require adoption.
00:06:56.860 In fact, it is often unwise and detrimental to do so.
00:07:01.540 Loving your own is natural, not sin.
00:07:06.020 Wow.
00:07:06.680 When you read it out loud, man, that's a fireball.
00:07:11.320 It really is.
00:07:13.000 It really is.
00:07:14.200 And it has a lot to do with our season here on King's Hall on Fatherhead.
00:07:17.980 It really does.
00:07:18.800 Yeah, it really – I think one of the issues too – and there was a lot of good people mixed in with a lot of, I think, bad faith actors in the comments.
00:07:26.400 But one of the questions that people were asking about this was, is Eric saying things like, if you adopt a child, it's not, quote, unquote, your own?
00:07:33.680 Is this somehow like a racist tweet or, you know, et cetera, et cetera?
00:07:38.460 And so I think just from the beginning, I think I'm using language that Paul is using, saying he who does not take care of his own household is worse than an unbeliever.
00:07:48.540 This would have been a pretty normal way, I think, for the reformers, the Puritans.
00:07:52.420 You can think of William Gouge on his instruction in Ephesians 5 on the family.
00:07:56.980 This is a pretty normal way to talk about natural affection for, yes, your biological children.
00:08:02.940 And we'll continue to unpack some of the responses and questions that arise from this.
00:08:07.960 It was interesting at this time of recording, I checked again.
00:08:12.220 The post has almost 700,000 views, 300 reposts, 833 likes, and 400 comments.
00:08:19.680 Interesting to note, James White, Dr. James White.
00:08:22.120 He claimed you were being ratioed.
00:08:23.960 And I kindly pointed out this is actually not a ratio.
00:08:27.820 Yes.
00:08:28.540 Which, you know, Dr. White being an excellent debater and, of course, debate being very much concerned with the clear and precise use of language.
00:08:41.920 Was he thankful?
00:08:43.400 He was not thankful.
00:08:44.280 Okay, dang it.
00:08:44.880 And he said, I'm not going to argue about a ratio of what it is or isn't.
00:08:48.220 i said well actually your first premise is just factually incorrect time time will tell you could
00:08:52.540 still be ratioed time will tell maybe we'll get a ratio out of this um but dan i want to ask you
00:08:58.340 because you're so active on twitter do you think like when you see this do you think it's just
00:09:04.080 engagement farming as many people claimed do you think there's any motivation beyond this and of
00:09:09.360 course i have to answer that question ultimately yeah but what i don't know your motivations what
00:09:14.420 do you think well what's really funny is the way that i found this tweet was that i was looking at
00:09:19.320 a different tweet that eric con had posted and he's like well you know i've got a different one
00:09:23.840 that's kind of kind of getting some attention you have to scroll down my feed a little bit to find
00:09:29.060 it and it was the adoption tweet uh no i i mean just knowing uh the character of pastor eric con
00:09:37.300 i don't think this was engagement farming this was just uh normal eric rhetoric observing something
00:09:44.280 that's true and just saying it. You know, and it reminds me of something people often miss about
00:09:50.040 our Twitter engagement generally, which is that something happens a lot when you're pastoring,
00:09:56.880 where you're having conversations or you're counseling somebody, or you're seeing a pattern
00:10:02.140 or a trend that you're thinking, how can I address this pastorally? This is something that could harm
00:10:05.680 the church. This was my modesty tweet that I did get ratioed, by the way, like hard. As bad as you
00:10:11.960 can almost get ratioed i got ratioed and dr james white said that means you're wrong i hope i wasn't
00:10:18.780 wrong it was funny because we i just interjecting but we saw that comment dr james white said if
00:10:23.760 you're getting ratioed this hard it probably means you're wrong and i pointed to like athanasius and
00:10:29.520 contramundum because that's kind of funny yeah we don't want to do the ad populum thing but that was
00:10:34.600 also something that was pointed out by somebody else was uh that's actually ad populum so this
00:10:38.740 what happens when you're hanging around classical school people yeah immediately we're like ad
00:10:42.900 populum they're like that's an ad populum actually you know there's nothing quite like a great cup of
00:10:49.640 coffee in the morning here at new christened press we've really been enjoying coffee from

00:12:50.100 Check out the links in the show notes for more information about Defined Benefit Partners.
00:12:54.520 no but so you're doing all that work and you're thinking about addressing the the principles and
00:13:01.560 truths of scripture to your people or to people relevant to your life and then you think of you
00:13:06.700 see something you notice something and you're like oh there i'll tweet about that i'm going to you
00:13:10.200 know tweet about modesty or i'm going to tweet about feminists or i'm going to tweet about
00:13:13.040 um you know men leading in the home or women submitting to their husbands and a lot of what
00:13:17.600 happens is people will assume that you are just trying to drop bombs that you're just trying to
00:13:23.200 explode things. Sometimes they'll assume you're talking about them. When, you know, a lot of
00:13:28.620 people did that with your tweet where they're like, oh, so you're saying that, look at all
00:13:31.960 my adopted children and I'm clearly unwise and, you know, whatever you said. Well, you didn't say
00:13:36.940 that. You said that it can often be unwise, which is absolutely 100% true. And the thing that
00:13:43.600 happens is that you see that you're talking to people who are like, yeah, really got burned
00:13:48.240 because of some of this adoption rhetoric,
00:13:50.540 ended up in some unwise family decisions,
00:13:53.040 really, you know, a lot of devastation on our family.
00:13:55.620 They don't see any of that context.
00:13:57.380 They just go, oh, it's Eric underscore con.
00:13:59.880 Therefore, he's just trying to farm outrage.
00:14:03.540 Yeah, I think it's a really good point.
00:14:04.660 Most of the stuff, as you said,
00:14:06.040 is it was literally from some conversations,
00:14:08.560 which we might get into.
00:14:10.700 Just conversations with, you know,
00:14:12.840 part of what's hard about this
00:14:14.120 is when people are having
00:14:15.120 counseling type conversations with you
00:14:17.020 And you're talking about adoption. These are not things that like I can say publicly, hey, let me tell you about this situation. I also thought it was interesting that I had scores of messages, text messages, Twitter messages, Facebook messages, Instagram messages of people saying you're absolutely right.
00:14:36.420 and this is how it destroyed my family or this is how harmful it was because of all the rhetoric of
00:14:41.840 the you know 2000s young restless reform their emphasis even today there's a huge emphasis
00:14:48.380 on adoption and a lot of the people said i would post this publicly but i don't want to be shamed
00:14:55.240 it's already hurt our family enough yeah and so i think it's it's sort of like it turned into a mob
00:15:00.960 pretty quickly. And we'll continue to maybe ask some questions about why that was.
00:15:06.360 So Eric, before we keep going, I think maybe it'd be a good idea for us just to get
00:15:11.140 clear away some of the bad faith or failure of reading comprehension or like the worst possible
00:15:18.980 assumptions that people made about your tweet. Let's just start with, are you saying adoption
00:15:23.480 itself is sinful, wrong, bad, inherently unwise? What do you say?
00:15:29.120 Yeah, definitely not. I would say basically what the issue comes down to is, is it a moral obligation to adopt? In other words, can we say to people, you are sinning if you don't adopt? You must adopt.
00:15:41.720 I think the rhetoric lends toward that.
00:15:45.220 We've seen people in First Things and even Desiring God, ERLC articles, calling it things like a moral obligation to adopt or a secondary moral obligation to adopt.
00:15:56.960 And really my point here is you can adopt.
00:16:00.240 Yeah.
00:16:00.700 But the whole emphasis of saying you can is that it's a wisdom issue.
00:16:05.140 Yeah. And what we can't do as pastors is bind the conscience to something that we don't have a scriptural warrant for. Yeah. I think we'll get into this, too. But I think what's really interesting about this discussion is that so much of the same people in the same movement are really uncomfortable telling people that you should have children if you're married.
00:16:28.620 Yeah.
00:16:29.060 So in the past, I had gotten into it with Stephen Outroge, who's written on Twitter, who's written for Desiring God and also the Gospel Coalition.
00:16:37.000 And I had said, based on another conversation, that I think it's not a biblical – it's not a picture of biblical obedience for dinks, dual income, no kids, to say, hey, we want to be married and we don't want children.
00:16:51.500 Right?
00:16:51.940 We talked about this in the fertility episode.
00:16:53.600 I don't think that's a viable, obedient, biblical position.
00:16:57.460 And Stephen said to me in that case, he said, you are wrongfully binding the consciences of Christians by telling them that they should have children.
00:17:04.680 And I said, well, in this case, I actually have a command, Genesis 128, be fruitful, multiply.
00:17:09.200 And this still applies in the new covenant.
00:17:13.100 Well, and then you fast forward to the adoption issue.
00:17:15.920 Stephen was going back and forth with me about it again.
00:17:18.680 And he said, no, Christians absolutely have to adopt.
00:17:22.260 And I was like, well, that's really interesting.
00:17:24.140 You're willing to take a biblical command and just discard it.
00:17:27.380 But now you're importing a biblical command where we don't have a Genesis 128 for adoption.
00:17:32.840 You know, we don't have a similar passage.
00:17:35.560 Yeah.
00:17:35.820 It's, again, to your point, one of the core, at least the way that I read it, one of the core principles that you were pointing out, which is this isn't just a fringe thing that you're just lobbing grenades for no reason.
00:17:47.040 This is one of the key failures of thinking and ethics in our current evangelical world.
00:17:53.420 And it's a failure of ethics when it comes to globalism versus particularism with that Pastor Isker was pointing out in our cold open that we so often we actually illegitly we discard the real commands of God by globalizing and generalizing them where we say, yes, we have a command to widows and orphans.
00:18:15.240 And we have a command to – when we turn that into a globalist, well, you have this duty to everybody.
00:18:22.080 The whole church has this duty to everybody.
00:18:24.500 You are of no use to anybody.
00:18:26.460 You have to actually start with who were the people who were morally responsible and sinned when they walked by the man beaten on the side of the road.
00:18:34.260 It was the people who walked by him and saw and said, eh, not my problem.
00:18:39.420 Rather than all of the other people in the town who had no idea that that guy was laying beaten on the side of the road.
00:18:44.420 they weren't in sin. They didn't have a sin of omission by walking by. But what we so often do
00:18:49.760 in evangelicalism is we neglect practical teaching on things like how to be a father
00:18:56.720 ahead of his house who leads his wife and his family well, who provides well, who takes care
00:19:01.180 of his own children first, and then works his way on outward in the outward ring sphere of
00:19:07.420 responsibilities. We don't do a good job of talking about that. Instead, we send our kids
00:19:12.760 to public school to be educated by pagans we send them off to our daughters off to colleges to be
00:19:19.260 educated by pagans to become you know things that eric khan has also tweeted about controversially
00:19:24.300 we we we and then we do so while and then we say many of us say oh we don't we want our kids to be
00:19:32.440 self-reliant we're not going to help with housing when they're 18 they're out they're on their own
00:19:35.740 while we continue to send money to compassion international and we continue to send money for
00:19:41.080 foreign missions. And again, like Isker said, those things aren't bad, but you got to get the
00:19:46.160 first things first. You have to get the natural affection that even the pagans understand
00:19:51.440 right first before you work out like that. Well, and I mean, I absolutely agree with you. And I
00:19:57.360 think this is exactly where mainstream evangelicalism has gone wrong. So you think
00:20:00.940 about the gospel coalition and they invert these priorities. So you'll see lots of articles about
00:20:06.740 how having a family is an idol how being a wife and a mother is an idol how you can make your
00:20:11.600 kids an idol you don't see like have you made adoption an idol which i think actually you know
00:20:21.180 dan and i were talking about this it seems like dan this is a case where did you touch the idol
00:20:27.620 based on people's responses and a lot of times people who are capable of clear thought were not
00:20:32.920 thinking clearly. Yeah. There was a lot of emotional responses and outrage. Did you think
00:20:38.900 it was like, was there an idol being touched? Yeah. I think that you can often get a good
00:20:45.380 measure of this. Christians have done this for centuries. You'll take something that's generally
00:20:50.580 a good, like adoption is a good. It can be. It can be a moral good. Yeah. And it becomes elevated
00:20:58.760 to a status in which, you know, not to get ahead of us too far, becomes almost like a
00:21:04.160 sacrament of the church or as Eric has said in private conversation with me, like an indulgence
00:21:09.840 of the church.
00:21:11.660 And you can tell that this is actually true because when you start to question it, like
00:21:16.560 Eric did, you just said, hey, maybe adoption isn't wise in every case.
00:21:20.840 It's not actually a yoke that Christians all ought to bear, where if you have an extra
00:21:27.120 room in your house, you are morally obligated by Jesus Christ himself to adopt a kid from Sudan.
00:21:34.900 And people don't have a category in which to actually question this, this moral good,
00:21:44.040 this adoption, taking care of these foreign orphans and saying, well, maybe there's a category in
00:21:51.540 which it wouldn't be wise for somebody to adopt. It's so baked into the foundations of their
00:21:56.340 presuppositions that people ought to adopt that, you know, when somebody says something about it,
00:22:02.100 when they poke that idea, uh, there is absolute explosion. In fact, there were multiple cases in
00:22:09.520 which Eric himself was referred to as a heretic because of the denial of universal and absolute
00:22:17.600 moral obligation to adopt foreign children from foreign countries. Yeah. In fact, one guy said,
00:22:23.880 no one is saying it's a moral obligation which i actually cited articles where it said exactly that
00:22:29.040 but he said no one is saying a moral this is a moral obligation and you are a heretic for
00:22:35.000 rejecting adoption and no one should listen to you and i was like well which is it people also
00:22:40.620 put a lot of labels on you like where they basically said because you're making a distinction
00:22:45.760 between that everywhere and localism that you are kinnist that you are racist that you were
00:22:53.480 saying, you know, basically like, let's only adopt white children because, you know, they're
00:22:59.260 better than black children from Sudan or something like that, which is not what, in fact, if someone
00:23:03.840 in Sudan had been reading your tweet, the correct response for them would have been, I shouldn't,
00:23:08.620 if I'm going to adopt, I shouldn't be looking in Atlanta, Georgia. I should be looking and seeing,
00:23:14.060 is there anybody in next door to me that I can first bring into my, you know, that that's the
00:23:19.180 principle, it applies locally to everybody. It didn't, there was no, there was no like
00:23:24.780 kinism or, and yet people were, they, they were, they were ascribing some things to you.
00:23:31.540 Yeah. So there was two tweets in particular that I captured. One is from Mark Spence.
00:23:36.640 He's, he referenced your tweet and said, unholy pastor friends, Mark and avoid as a heretic.
00:23:43.080 okay because he questioned the moral obligation to to adopt that it might not be wise in every
00:23:51.060 situation there was another pastor named dj jenkins who said that you were quote absolutely
00:23:58.800 depraved maybe he was just a calvinist who didn't understand the ordo salutis
00:24:05.420 the orders yes i don't know if that's it that was that is a take that's charitable though see
00:24:11.460 That is charitable.
00:24:12.120 These guys could learn.
00:24:12.900 Yeah.
00:24:13.860 He was just confused.
00:24:14.940 He was just confused by the Ordo Salutis.
00:24:16.540 Well, it was interesting because in one of the other things I think that would be helpful
00:24:21.240 with a discussion like this is helping people think through, like, how do you process issues
00:24:25.900 like this?
00:24:26.760 Matter of conscience, sin, or wisdom.
00:24:28.600 Yeah.
00:24:29.260 And Brian, you were teaching Sunday, I think it was this last Sunday morning, Sunday school,
00:24:33.640 and Westminster Confession, chapter 20?
00:24:36.280 Yes.
00:24:36.600 Chapter 20 on the basically liberty of conscience.
00:24:40.580 Yeah, liberty of conscience. So I went back, was reading through that. One of the things that stated in there is this, God alone is Lord of the conscience and have left it free from the doctrines and commandments of men, which are in anything contrary to his word or beside it in matters of faith or worship.
00:24:57.260 So one of the key things here, as we've said, is we want to be really careful forcing a commandment of men on people when Scripture doesn't warrant that.
00:25:08.180 Okay, so that's part of it.
00:25:09.760 But the other part of this is it means that you can't have emotional reasoning when you're going through stuff.
00:25:16.820 Like maybe you adopted and maybe it went well and maybe it's really important and near your heart.
00:25:21.600 Yeah.
00:25:22.420 But I think this is especially true with women when they get really attached to something.
00:25:26.600 any subject uh women and i mean women and also women of both sexes yeah um that they just it's
00:25:33.600 like they're just kind of like say anybody who even questioned what i did or take it personally
00:25:39.820 like i was you know dan said i was personally questioning them it seems like though this is
00:25:44.660 where pastors ought to be stepping in rather than doing what a lot of pastors did as dan just read
00:25:50.180 you have to help your people think through this right and then provide guardrails yeah because
00:25:55.580 one of the issues here is that
00:25:57.640 let's take someone who
00:25:59.520 their family adopted. There were many ladies 1.00
00:26:01.580 on Twitter who were very angry with you and assuming 1.00
00:26:03.700 things about what you were, your
00:26:05.580 motives and things like that. There was some screenshotting
00:26:08.020 and blocking. Yeah. A lot of it
00:26:09.800 came from, well, I've adopted
00:26:11.380 three. I've, you know, our family's had three
00:26:13.480 foreign adoptions. We're so thankful for these children.
00:26:16.160 They are our own. Eric,
00:26:17.660 stop saying they're not, which is not what you're saying.
00:26:19.620 Once you adopt a child, that child is your
00:26:21.640 own. Yes. And you have an obligation to provide
00:26:23.760 for them. They're a member of your household. Of course, obviously, only an idiot would say
00:26:28.240 otherwise, right? And Eric's not an idiot. He just like insulted a whole swath of people. 1.00
00:26:33.040 I'm just saying like only an idiot would say that someone you've brought into the covenantal 0.98
00:26:37.260 and legal protection of your household isn't your own and that that's what you were saying. 0.98
00:26:41.860 So you weren't saying that, but take someone in that situation. They read you in the least
00:26:47.040 charitable possible light. And what they end up doing is if that person's standard became the
00:26:51.880 pastor anybody through the question of adoption. Lots of families would make radically unwise
00:26:57.020 choices. Because think about this, when you're adopting, even people who have done it before
00:27:03.680 will give you, like Lexi and I looked into fostering at one point, young children in our
00:27:08.160 home. It was closer to this period that many of us went through where adoption was really being
00:27:14.680 pushed as like the gospel issue of the time. And we had been looking into fostering. So we began
00:27:20.780 to ask some people from who had done it, who had fostered, adopted, done local and foreign
00:27:26.220 adoptions, babies and other, you know, ages. And the advice we got over and over from many of these
00:27:32.900 families was many of them said, don't do it in your current stage of life. I'm very thankful for
00:27:37.400 that. And almost I think universally, every single one of them said, if you do, here are some things
00:27:44.060 that you must think through. Don't adopt out of age order. So if you're adopting and you have
00:27:50.720 If your youngest kid is four, you should only adopt children under four so that there's a natural birth order.
00:27:58.700 Yes. Age birth order. You're not introducing a 12 year old. All of a sudden they gave a lot of, you know, here's some issues that we ran into some discipline issues, some and and I'm thankful that we actually didn't at that time.
00:28:12.560 I don't think it would have been wise for our family. And I think it might have caused big
00:28:17.340 problems with our own children in hindering us from doing a good job with our own children
00:28:22.220 at that stage of life. So if you universalize this command and say, or even get all outraged
00:28:28.540 and act like any questioning of it or any urge to caution or any urge to wisdom is inherently
00:28:34.420 heretic gospel denying, you know, Twitter engagement, farming, blah, blah, blah, blah,
00:28:39.100 blah. It's like, well, no, but have you ladies pastored families? Have you talked to families
00:28:45.400 who have had their entire families blown up through adoption? Have you dealt with that
00:28:50.100 pastorally? And the answer is no, they haven't. And again, and maybe you can speak to this. Some
00:28:55.880 of the examples of people you've spoken with, some of where this came out of, I think would
00:29:00.440 be helpful for people to understand without, and this is difficult because the other, and I'm going
00:29:05.180 actually let you talk but the other thing that happens is that all of the the good and glorious
00:29:10.600 and god glorifying like yes we're thankful for all these successful adoptions that they are a
00:29:14.460 picture of the gospel praise the lord all of that but do you think that people are going on twitter
00:29:18.840 and posting when they have an adoption horror story do you think that that's getting the same
00:29:24.240 amount of press it was all dms no no no that no one is going to go because they they value those
00:29:29.860 relationships and hope for the renewal of them even when there's been total breakdown of the
00:29:34.000 family and the adopted child's, you know, curse the family's name and disown them and said, I
00:29:38.420 want nothing to do with, you're not going to go on Twitter and be like, well, this is what happened
00:29:42.300 to everybody. So of course you're not going to hear those stories that we hear. So Eric, I think
00:29:48.180 it'd be helpful if you could speak to that a little bit. Yeah, that's absolutely right. This
00:29:52.420 is one message that I was sent. And the person said, you can use this, obviously don't use my
00:29:56.680 name, but you can share this with your podcast listeners. I think it would be helpful for people
00:30:00.700 to hear. So this person says, I grew up in an incredibly strong Christian home with four
00:30:05.300 brothers. My parents decided to adopt three girls who were in foster care. My parents separated
00:30:10.920 seven years later and are now divorced. Obviously, I wouldn't say it's my sister's fault,
00:30:16.380 but there's no doubt in my mind that bringing them into our home caused strife and division
00:30:20.040 with my parents. My mom always said they brought a spirit of deception into our home. We love them,
00:30:25.960 But our family is in ruins today, and I don't believe it would be had we never adopted.
00:30:31.440 I mean, you can see what happens.
00:30:33.860 I've heard a lot of people say like, okay, we brought these kids into our home, and it was like having a boys or girls home.
00:30:39.240 And it really wasn't healthy to expose my other children to that.
00:30:43.460 Somebody who was in this kind of young restless and reform movement I was talking to recently, pastor, poor, you know, you're kind of in a movement in the SBC where it's like be poor because that's righteous.
00:30:54.380 more righteous right poverty theology so you know he told me he was like here we were we're like
00:30:58.540 poor but you know russ moore is like you need to adopt you need to adopt you need to adopt we adopt
00:31:02.320 a child uh through foster they say yep it's you know he's healthy everything else two three years
00:31:09.720 old they start to realize he's got some major mental retardation severe autism type stuff going
00:31:14.680 on very costly and expensive to take care of they were not prepared for that it greatly disrupted
00:31:20.720 you know with having biological children and having to spend so much time caring
00:31:24.940 for this child who is now late teens and I was talking to the dad and he said
00:31:30.440 this child will live with me forever and he said I believe in God's providence God's sovereign
00:31:36.040 but he said I genuinely believe the rhetoric coming out of the pulpit about adoption is
00:31:41.160 extremely harmful and basically because it was like gospel yeah is adoption so therefore
00:31:48.580 natural imperative outflow of the gospel is you must adopt.
00:31:52.620 And often where this rhetoric goes to, you've mentioned this already obliquely, but
00:31:57.440 is that it's aimed at, often it lands very powerfully in young married couples who are
00:32:05.600 in their like 19 to 25 years old kind of range. They have no experience in parenting yet. Many of
00:32:11.160 them haven't had children of their own, or they're just starting to. And then many of those families
00:32:16.240 without anybody or very few people telling them any kind of like, whoa, there, hey, let's think
00:32:22.180 this through. Let's make sure that you're prepared for this. Let, you know, it's like, no, it's the
00:32:27.920 gospel picture. Like, you got to do it. Like, let's, yeah, let's fundraise. Let's raise the
00:32:31.880 20 or 40 or $60,000 and let's make this happen. And it's like this rush of external display
00:32:39.740 that then goes through. And again, the only ones you'll hear about are the ones that were
00:32:45.860 successful. You won't hear about the ones where it was like, wow, that actually really damaged
00:32:52.180 our family, harmed our kids, and harmed our ability to be faithful to the duties we had
00:32:56.580 before the Lord. Right. And I mean, two other stories that come to mind to kind of demonstrate
00:33:01.380 this. I'll try to be fairly vague with details, but you have teenage girls and you have male
00:33:09.880 child brought in and adopted doesn't view sisters as sisters right so uh then you have uh sexual
00:33:17.000 problems yeah not knowing how much delinquency it was in the past of the the boy child can become
00:33:23.900 so egregious and people you know in those situations are that i've had conversations
00:33:29.940 with they said like we were not told right we just said like adopt gospel adopt uh the other
00:33:36.260 one that is probably the most egregious one uh russia has since banned adoptions yeah they've
00:33:41.720 banned foreign adoptions and this is maybe one reason why uh a church situation that i was you
00:33:47.240 know i i knew of uh was a girl who was adopted from russia into a christian family uh she had
00:33:54.140 been abused as a child comes over uh father ends up going to jail because daughter is performing
00:34:00.280 sexual acts on on father not you know adoptive adoptive father so uh these are examples of
00:34:08.880 i think just extremes that like when you go to the erlc website they're not talking about this one
00:34:14.340 they're not talking about what could go wrong and then maybe one that's not as severe but uh
00:34:20.320 speaking to some friends recently who years of miscarriage infertility finally were able to have
00:34:26.520 a child and all the adoption posting was going on and the dad said to me he said thank you so much
00:34:31.580 for what you said i was like what why would why would that matter to you and he said well when
00:34:35.940 we were infertile people were like you must adopt it's like heavy pressure yeah like heavy pressure
00:34:41.900 like you have to do this and he said that really meant a lot that that you would take the shot and
00:34:46.820 just just kind of defend us give the warning i didn't even realize it you know yeah uh was doing
00:34:51.760 but i i think a lot of this this is why it's an important wisdom issue that you have to think
00:34:56.120 through this and not just, I think it's actually irresponsible. Well, and we have, to be totally
00:35:01.100 clear, again, like all of the things people are assuming, we have multiple families in the church
00:35:05.680 who have wisely and successfully adopted children, and they are doing a great job avoiding the
00:35:12.000 ditches, did their homework, did this well. Very thankful for those children. Very thankful for
00:35:18.160 those families. And it absolutely is one expression of how we've obeyed James 127 and other passages
00:35:25.100 about caring for widows and orphans, absolutely.
00:35:29.000 And we're thankful for those families
00:35:30.520 that have successfully done that.
00:35:32.800 We're not throwing shade on them.
00:35:34.440 I actually think those families
00:35:36.040 who have been through the reality of the process
00:35:38.100 and also know you and know, like would say,
00:35:41.280 no, that's a warning that people
00:35:43.160 absolutely need to take seriously.
00:35:45.280 Like don't do the Owen Strand performative,
00:35:49.280 God loves adoption,
00:35:50.660 looking after orphans in their affliction.
00:35:52.480 Woe to those who speak against what God loves.
00:35:56.280 What the implication of that tweet, especially if you read what you actually said and not what people emotionally – not what people felt in their emotions when they read what you said, which is a different thing.
00:36:06.560 Anybody who reads that, the implication is pretty clear.
00:36:10.740 Anybody who doesn't adopt is – or anybody who disagrees or urges any caution whatsoever in wisdom taking and thinking through this process for a family, woe to them.
00:36:20.880 they're speaking against what god loves like what that's actually a pretty serious are you kidding
00:36:27.580 me this is another thing you think the the other tweet that owen had i thought was interesting he
00:36:33.160 said i am aware of exactly no one who has said it is sinful to love your own like what what that's
00:36:39.200 a non sequitur utterly unrelated and then he says what has been said rightly is that loving those
00:36:44.400 not like you is reflective of christ's atoning blood that unites jews and gentile as one new
00:36:50.080 man, Ephesians 2.15. God help you, Eric. God help you, Eric. Here's what I love about this tweet
00:36:55.040 is that, first of all, it is a common issue with this G3 Christian nationalism divide here,
00:37:00.580 where the, what I would say is trending in an Anabaptist direction theologically,
00:37:05.880 is that they don't understand categorically what you're talking about when you just use
00:37:11.020 classic reformed doctrinal categories. Like saying a natural family. Like natural affection
00:37:16.280 or the order of loves. And those are all clearly biblical doctrines that theologians have been
00:37:23.020 uncontroversially using for hundreds of years. And then they pour into it, like Owen is implying
00:37:32.120 there that you're saying that Christ's atoning blood is not enough to unite Jew and Gentile,
00:37:37.240 and that you're saying that somehow this duty to love your own, which is a direct biblical
00:37:41.200 commandment is you saying and don't you love those other skinned people yeah which is like 0.99
00:37:46.960 just absolutely stupid thing to say like here i how on earth did this man get a doctorate 0.98
00:37:52.540 with thinking that unclear i mean he's thinking like an emotional teenage girl he's not reasoning 0.99
00:37:59.120 like a a christian man who has a doctrine in theology and should be the leading example of
00:38:04.340 how to treat other people in their words and i'm like owen like what are you many example i wouldn't
00:38:10.860 be speaking so strongly if owen hadn't given example after example after example after example
00:38:15.680 after example of this kind of honestly cowardly and sinful treatment of his interlocutors yeah
00:38:24.320 like the implication don't miss this people don't just be like oh yeah classic christian
00:38:28.800 nationalism tweet debate he's saying that eric is a christ-denying racist yeah that's the
00:38:35.700 implication yeah which is slanderous in the extreme yeah well it actually makes sense that
00:38:41.320 his rhetoric would be like this emotive in nature we're trying to win because he's
00:38:46.480 well yes well they are all the women who screenshotted and blocked me and went on to
00:38:51.480 gossip and slander in the comments owen started retweeting them and saying amen sister yeah well
00:38:56.440 but what i was going to say is that it makes sense that he would reason this way post tweet
00:39:00.960 because this is the way he reasons pre-tweet.
00:39:03.940 In order to actually make adoption a moral imperative,
00:39:09.500 they treat foreign missions the same way.
00:39:12.240 And the reason I would say this is like a sacrament
00:39:14.400 or an indulgence is because automatically
00:39:17.260 in these sorts of camps, if you adopt
00:39:19.720 or if you're in foreign missions,
00:39:21.480 you are actually in a different class of Christianity.
00:39:25.240 You are set apart because of this emotional reasoning.
00:39:30.380 Yes, absolutely.
00:39:31.580 It is a higher caste system.
00:39:34.120 And isn't it – isn't that somewhat Gnostic too though to say that there's like a special class, almost like the secret knowledge, like a special class of ultra-Christian?
00:39:44.180 Yeah, you're now embodying the gospel in some ultra-standard way.
00:39:47.760 Here's the other thing I think people are missing.
00:39:49.260 There's – I can't remember who tweeted this thread.
00:39:50.780 It was very helpful on this conversation was the person who said a lot of older people and even a lot of younger people today didn't live through the period that if you're about between the age of 28 and 40, you lived this period of the 2000s where the dominant narrative was being ruled by David Platt, radical, desiring God at its most, I would say, proto-woke, which I'm not saying desiring God is everything they've ever done is woke or worth.
00:40:19.720 I'm not saying that.
00:40:20.400 I have the tweet if you'd like me to read it.
00:40:21.900 Yeah, I want you to read it.
00:40:22.940 And people didn't live through this era.
00:40:24.740 And so like, even, you know, with respect, like Dr. White, I don't think that he was
00:40:28.780 because he wasn't in seminary in this period.
00:40:31.280 He wasn't working through the culture of 20 somethings in this period, young marrieds
00:40:35.000 and the narrative that they were hearing.
00:40:36.940 So yeah, Dan, I think it'd be helpful to read this tweet.
00:40:39.160 Yeah, this is from Pastor Greg.
00:40:40.600 I have no idea how old Eric Khan is, but I can tell you, I experienced the adoption
00:40:46.180 boom in my mid twenties in seminary.
00:40:48.180 i had professors berating us constantly about adopting kids they treated them like designer
00:40:53.680 accessories and symbols of spiritual piety and it was disgusting i think that's the tweet that
00:41:00.700 that was actually one of them there was even another one that talked about several people
00:41:04.660 noted this though and it helped connect the dots for me because it was this i was that age at this
00:41:10.360 time we were all in this in this era at a formative time when you're not the teacher you're you're
00:41:16.560 saying I'm here to be taught like, okay, Christian leaders, thought leaders, public theologians help
00:41:21.500 us to become godly pastors and, you know, ministry aspiring men. Yeah. So you have zeal without
00:41:26.580 experience, no experience yet. And you're submitting to these men. You're saying, well,
00:41:30.500 I'm going to go where they tell me to go, or I'm going to consider it, you know, deeply.
00:41:34.400 And the result of that was that many, many families were led to believe that at this time,
00:41:42.140 If you wanted to be a truly radical, you know, not go for the American false gospel or the, you know, there were so many packaging put on it and it has implications for so many areas of life that we're all still kind of detoxing from.
00:41:56.460 But as controversial as it is, I understand why adoption narratives were a big part of how this pack, this radical plat kind of gospel got out there.
00:42:10.720 It was a huge constituent part of that messaging.
00:42:14.160 Well, I was talking to somebody else that has moved since, come to our church from Salt Lake.
00:42:19.680 They were going to like a gospel-centered church.
00:42:21.860 And they said, oh, no, we knew people, like many couples who got married.
00:42:27.100 And they said, like one couple in particular they were telling me about was they both got sterilized, permanently sterilized.
00:42:33.840 And they said, there's too many orphans in the world.
00:42:36.240 Yes.
00:42:36.480 We're going to reject children from our own loins, and we are going to start pursuing adoption.
00:42:43.440 Yep.
00:42:43.780 So there's a lot of said cases.
00:42:46.120 It's interesting.
00:42:47.260 Another friend from the South told me, he goes, oh, yeah, you go into like any SBC or Fundy Baptist Church, and like it's pretty normal for like every family to have like one or two black kids.
00:42:58.540 It just became the thing to do.
00:43:00.340 Yeah. It's also interesting to me because there wasn't all of this, a lot of dishonest engagement about James 127.
00:43:08.060 Yeah. So people were claiming that I was denying James 127.
00:43:12.760 What's interesting about this to me is when you look at how the history of the church and how we've treated orphans and widows.
00:43:21.080 Correct me if I'm wrong, Brian, but there is a command to care for orphans and widows.
00:43:24.360 That doesn't necessarily mean you have to adopt all orphans or marry all widows.
00:43:28.780 No, it does not mean that.
00:43:30.540 It means that there are going to be – there's a general duty of the church.
00:43:35.180 And here's, again, a key move you have to make in this understanding.
00:43:38.740 You have to particularize it.
00:43:40.480 How is this command going to be obeyed, this general command to the church in local churches?
00:43:45.580 Local churches ruled by elders giving wise counsel, overseeing the process, are going to go to 1 Timothy 5.
00:43:51.040 And they're going to say, what kind of widow is this?
00:43:53.160 Does she have a relative?
00:43:54.080 Is she a pious, older, godly Christian woman who is too old for remarriage and should be enrolled in the care of the church?
00:44:01.620 And if so, then yes.
00:44:02.440 We're going to ensure that she's – is she a younger Christian woman who should be urged to marry so that she doesn't become a gossip and she doesn't go from house to house?
00:44:09.720 Well, then I'm going to urge her not to be enrolled but to be remarried.
00:44:13.400 Okay, what kind of orphans are we talking about here?
00:44:15.960 Is it a 14-year-old unruly child who didn't have a father and he's not a Christian in any sense?
00:44:22.300 Okay, that's a different kind of duty than the Christians who were going out and they were saying the Romans are leaving these girl babies or these children to be exposed and die.
00:44:31.620 And they pick that infant up and they bring it home.
00:44:33.880 And Christians were both reviled and renowned in the ancient world for this kind of behavior.
00:44:39.920 What it didn't mean, though, is that any orphan, all of a sudden the local church had that immoral obligation to adopt them fully into the family.
00:44:50.280 Christians throughout the ages have wisely ordered how they care for, and one of the
00:44:54.720 wise things that they've done is that in many cases, where there are older children who
00:44:59.540 would genuinely, again, I know this sounds controversial, but older children for whom
00:45:04.380 it would be very unwise for your other children, for many families to bring them in as their
00:45:09.300 own, be very unwise for the culture and the discipleship of the other children in the
00:45:14.180 family that you have a direct duty to, Christians would often start orphanages.
00:45:18.720 George Mueller.
00:45:19.040 They would start boys' homes, girls' homes, keeping them separate, the boys from the girls, knowing the egregious sexual abuse and sexual issues that arise in some of these because you have 12, 13 fatherless boys who have not been discipled whatsoever going through puberty.
00:45:36.620 And then all of a sudden, some families have adopted children like this, and they've ended up having to run a lockdown in their home where one wing of the house is where the girls go, and it's got a different key.
00:45:46.780 And at night, it's like there's a full lockdown system to keep them safe from the adopted sibling.
00:45:51.900 Guys, that's not made up.
00:45:53.040 That happens, right?
00:45:54.640 So you have to take a command like this, particularize it, let it be governed by the local church in their local area, and be very careful in the way you talk about it that you don't heap burdens on people that might lead them to make an unwise decision for their family.
00:46:09.380 give them wise ways of loving the widow and the orphan that are consistent with the biblical
00:46:15.520 ordering of loves consistent with biblical wisdom and what people what was so criminal about the
00:46:20.900 way people are reacting to this is they were making it act like when you when you were saying
00:46:26.160 the order of loves being properly worked out from the middle that you were saying that all of those 0.89
00:46:31.660 people who have adopted all the white families that have adopted black children are unwise and
00:46:36.160 that you're, you know, like they're not really their own. They imported all of that. Yeah. They 0.97
00:46:41.340 brought that with them to your tweet. You didn't say any of that. Yeah, exactly. Uh, one of the
00:46:47.100 things, Brian, that I was just like providentially this morning, I was thinking about all this
00:46:52.220 reading in Acts 19, Paul causes a riot at Ephesus. Yeah. Because he's denouncing idol worship. But
00:47:00.000 the problem is that the silversmiths are making a lot of money. Yeah. Off of this. And you know,
00:47:05.600 we're told I think 50,000 pieces of silver was the amount of the books that
00:47:08.760 they burned with, this is like, you, you guys are haunted cosmos.
00:47:12.040 So this is like witchcraft.
00:47:13.140 Yeah.
00:47:13.640 That all sorts of witchy stuff, all sorts of witchy stuff, magic books.
00:47:17.360 I think this is another piece of the pie that people do not consider because
00:47:20.380 it, it doesn't fit in that warm, glowy sermonic format of what people have been
00:47:25.560 told in a lot of gospel center churches.
00:47:27.820 But you have to realize that adoption is an industry.
00:47:31.340 People make their livings off of this.
00:47:32.900 So the reason I started looking at this was because one of our listeners and somebody who follows on Twitter said, well, you know, a lot of these conferences are sponsored by adoption agencies, these mega conferences that people are happening or having.
00:47:46.740 So I haven't tracked that down yet, but that was worth noting.
00:47:49.220 So I did look this up, though.
00:47:51.100 In 2022, it was reported that the adoption industry, and that's what it is.
00:47:55.740 The adoption industry was worth something like $24 billion in a single year.
00:48:02.900 So one of the things we need to be aware of is that this is – we were told in journalism, like, follow the money.
00:48:10.500 There's definitely money involved in the financial equation.
00:48:13.680 Think about if you're an adoption agency and you have all these pastors who – maybe you're donating to their charity.
00:48:19.780 You have all these pastors who are promoting your message, which brings in more clients.
00:48:24.280 Think about – this is the other thing I think people don't realize.
00:48:26.540 They're pointing to Christians in the Roman era adopting children.
00:48:29.280 I'm guessing they weren't paying $70,000 to do a domestic adoption.
00:48:34.440 They were probably just taking the children and not paying anything.
00:48:38.580 Yeah.
00:48:39.160 Yeah, absolutely.
00:48:40.120 As soon as you start to mix in the politics of donors and the politics of fundraising into issues, you're just going to have bad faith actors who get in and basically take something that is absolutely virtuous at its core.
00:48:54.220 Pro-life industry is another example of this.
00:48:56.320 There's grift.
00:48:56.900 And they come in and they make a living on it and they monetize and basically in adoption what happens is that you take something where you're actually monetizing people's virtue and you're doing it in a way that can functionally end up being like human trafficking where they're – foreign countries do this all the time.
00:49:16.720 They take care of – they take advantage of a wealthy American philanthropy by – they basically sell children.
00:49:23.700 It's absolutely wicked.
00:49:24.720 In fact, this is – so in 2013, Russia banned U.S. adoptions, and one of their biggest concerns was that there were a lot of abuses happening and that these children will be sold into human trafficking.
00:49:34.720 And even – and also LGBTQ families, but we repeat ourselves.
00:49:42.020 Our sponsor, Private Family Banking Partners, is on a mission to help Christians live out the dominion mandate by making a stealth-like move away from the mainstream banks and into their own privatized banking system.

00:50:37.520 Well, we've read the articles.
00:50:39.240 Yeah. 0.98
00:50:39.680 About the, you know, homosexual men who are adopting children and then abusing them. 0.94
00:50:44.440 Yes. 0.98
00:50:45.040 Putting this stuff online for people's consumption, pornographic, otherwise.
00:50:48.380 Yeah, absolutely wicked. 0.53
00:50:49.600 Absolutely wicked and criminal.
00:50:51.140 So I think you also have to acknowledge that reality that there are – I'm not saying everyone in the industry is bad.
00:50:57.420 Absolutely not.
00:50:58.020 Of course not.
00:50:58.300 I'm sure there are great adoption agencies and companies.
00:51:00.860 But I am saying you need to be aware that people are going to prey on this industry.
00:51:04.660 Many of them lament the cost.
00:51:06.760 They would say – and here's – and the good ones will say yes.
00:51:09.660 And this is exactly where the criminal evil grifting is happening.
00:51:13.880 Often it's in government regulation and dealing with foreign governments.
00:51:16.660 But you just have to realize that you – people, wicked men will actually take your Christian virtue and they will try to take advantage of it.
00:51:25.800 Like monetize it.
00:51:26.440 In order to monetize it.
00:51:27.760 And so I think if we're winding towards kind of a landing place for this episode, the question I think that lasts for us to discuss that would be really important and connecting it to our season.
00:51:39.140 Like it's not random that we're doing this here in a season on fatherhood.
00:51:41.640 We're not just doing this because, oh, this is a big tweet that's happening to, you know, be controversial now, is that fathers, men, need to think very carefully about how they protect their homes from emotionalist thinking, people who will prey on their wives' emotions.
00:52:01.200 because people will prey on your wife's emotions in order to try and convince you to do something
00:52:08.640 without thinking it through clearly, without seeking godly counsel. So how should a father
00:52:15.460 be thinking? Let's split this into two categories, maybe even three categories. And the one would be
00:52:21.860 how should a father, considering they've been thinking about adoption, what should they be
00:52:25.580 thinking through? Second would be, okay, you've adopted children and that's your situation as a
00:52:29.640 father? What are some things that you should be thinking through to make sure that you do a good
00:52:33.100 job to your, these are now your children. And then, um, also I think maybe the third category
00:52:38.220 would be what, what should, what would we say that people should be who were offended by your tweet?
00:52:46.140 Cause some of our listeners, I even saw some people say, you know, I'm usually with Eric,
00:52:51.260 but I think he went too far here. I think any last words on that, this is probably too big
00:52:56.700 have a question this is why you're usually the one who's leading it i think in like complex
00:53:01.180 three-part questions and you just like say so dan what do you think about this but i'll actually
00:53:05.620 start with the last one because it's the one i remember but also yeah because i i i there's kind
00:53:11.360 of like two categories on the one hand there's a lot of people who have followed us for a long
00:53:15.500 time again it was it was kind of sad to see they blocked and started screenshotting and they were
00:53:20.260 very upset um one of the ones that that didn't do that uh the the handle is patriarchy hannah
00:53:25.860 and she responded and she said okay i i i you know i've trusted a lot of what you said i'm having a
00:53:32.980 hard time digesting uh you know we've adopted walk me through this yeah she said where are people
00:53:39.160 saying moral obligation and i shared an article from ross moore and i shared an article i think
00:53:43.920 from first things where they literally said moral obligation to adopt and and then um you know we
00:53:50.540 talked about it and she said wow i did not know that thank you i'm going to talk with my husband
00:53:54.680 about this um and then i think i'll end up actually uh doing some podcasting with them
00:53:59.480 but but i think that is the better way for women to say and this is a woman you can i don't know
00:54:05.940 who it is but generally it's like okay you can tell that her husband has a firm leadership role
00:54:11.040 in the home right respects he's loving her she respects him she respects him in all the right
00:54:15.700 ways but this this is a really good and we had people in our church even who saw the tweet and
00:54:19.980 they said one guy in fact said to me he said yeah it kind of rubbed me the wrong way i i kind of
00:54:25.040 could identify with some of the criticisms but i said this is this is a guy that i trust i've
00:54:30.140 gotten counsel from so i'm just going to go ask him what what without importing all the false
00:54:36.620 narratives yeah what what did you mean and here's some of my questions and then afterward it usually
00:54:41.360 always went well yeah so i would say be that kind of particularly be that kind of lady husbands if
00:54:47.140 you're leading your wives through stuff like this you know you always have to guard like you know
00:54:51.800 help her think through like especially with social media and things online uh we live in an age that
00:54:57.580 is outrage farming yes and so people are easily what i would say is just like brian said before
00:55:03.620 about anger it's easy to manipulate your outrage is easy to manipulate yes oh i saw this this story
00:55:10.360 about dead babies in israel like let's launch the nukes right and and then maybe a wise father would
00:55:15.760 say like well let's wait and see if that's actually true hey yeah we're in the age of ai and video and
00:55:20.960 audio manipulation like let's just give it a second let's pause and then if you waited today
00:55:24.560 you were like okay false report so there was actually no reason to be outraged so i would
00:55:30.160 say that's part of it, just having self-control and discipline as you're reading things online
00:55:35.200 and wading through them. Dan, you look like you're about pensive about this subject matter.
00:55:41.940 Oh man, I'm so satisfied to just listen to your beautiful voice.
00:55:44.780 No, lies.
00:55:46.260 No, I mean, the thing is, I have a foundational understanding of why people are outraged,
00:55:52.000 right? So this isn't necessarily like just straight confusion, but I am slightly confused
00:55:57.000 Because if you just boil down your tweet to a single sentence, I think it would be – now I said a single sentence instead of multiple sentences.
00:56:08.100 But that you've been told it's a moral obligation to adopt and instead you should apply wisdom.
00:56:16.000 I mean that's really all that you said.
00:56:18.340 Yeah.
00:56:18.900 Yeah.
00:56:19.640 So I mean anybody that has an issue with that, I just –
00:56:24.000 So I'm like derailing, but I do have a question about this because a lot of people came in and said, well, this could have been reworded.
00:56:33.600 You could have not said it in that way.
00:56:37.660 I mean, to me, I read that as just like the typical winsome crowd type.
00:56:45.420 Well, a lot of times it's I don't like your tweet and I don't have a good reason.
00:56:50.320 So I'm going to police.
00:56:51.500 Yeah, ad hominem.
00:56:52.660 But it is interesting because, Brian, I was thinking about this, like, how many times Jesus will just drop an absolute bomb?
00:56:59.200 Like, whoever believes in me must eat my flesh and drink my blood.
00:57:02.700 And he's like, peace out, mic drop.
00:57:04.660 A lot of people stop following him, and then his disciples will come to him and they'll be like, what did you mean by that?
00:57:10.880 And he'll explain and they'll grow deeper in faith.
00:57:13.300 But it seems like there's at least a place for – like people were saying like, well, why didn't you provide every exception?
00:57:22.400 Why didn't you provide every nuance?
00:57:23.740 You could have nuanced this more.
00:57:25.800 What are you typically thinking when you hear that?
00:57:28.320 Well, about 95 percent of those people, no matter what nuance you had provided because it's you, would hate it.
00:57:34.540 They'd find a reason.
00:57:35.600 That's true of about 95 percent of negative interaction with me and you on Twitter.
00:57:42.020 just given given the fact that we've had controversial tweets that have gone pretty far
00:57:46.380 multiple 10 000 followers that kind of thing we just have to deal with that every single day with
00:57:52.720 everything we say about an 80 to 95 of people who are negative are gonna they don't care how much
00:57:58.560 you nuance they just hate your face right like there's a couple that now lexi's been tweeting
00:58:03.280 again recently and they're just like nagging her in the comments to like they block them but
00:58:08.680 But for those serious 5% that are like, no, no, no, I respect you.
00:58:14.400 I'm hearing you out. 1.00
00:58:15.080 I haven't just decided that you're an idiot a year ago and I'm just going to rage tweet back at whatever. 1.00
00:58:20.520 I'm going to be a rage reply guy or reply gal to your tweets all the time. 1.00
00:58:24.860 To those people, I would say, yeah, totally.
00:58:27.940 I understand why.
00:58:29.020 Like any of the tweets that have been controversial for many of us will often have some serious people saying, I don't like the way you said that.
00:58:38.180 And to those people, I would say, that's fine. I'm not telling you how you have to communicate every truth. But as somebody who does communicate truth into culture and to real people all day long, every day for years, you have to reckon with the reality that sometimes saying things in a way that's intentionally going to unsettle the reader or listener is actually a rhetorically effective and wise move.
00:59:03.660 because in when you when you're dealing with you're countering narratives that are deeply
00:59:08.900 ingrained in a culture like the one about it clearly the one about adoption in order to get
00:59:14.700 a hearing at all sometimes you have to really unsettle people to get them to question their
00:59:19.260 foundational thinking on an issue at all sometimes you really have to shake their foundations and say
00:59:24.320 no no but but but think like the modesty tweets a good example the one i said
00:59:28.940 don't ladies shouldn't be posting immodest pictures even to show their newborn baby 0.98
00:59:34.040 and and that was because i had seen a lot of christian women online that i thought were 1.00
00:59:38.540 otherwise like godly and respectable women all of a sudden posting here's my baby on my breast
00:59:43.340 with 80 of my breast exposed but it's okay because i'm in a hospital room or i'm in a
00:59:49.080 home birth center i'm in my home and i just had a baby and and and i said that knowing that a lot
00:59:54.980 of people would be like, how dare you sexualize this intimate motherly moment? I was like, well,
00:59:59.920 no, no, no, no. That was actually not the response though, was it? Well, lots of people did say that.
01:00:03.920 Oh, they did. Yeah, they did. They said, how dare you sexualize that moment?
01:00:06.840 Most of the replies were off limits because. Yeah. Don't go look at that tweet people. So
01:00:12.100 this is another case where I would say people who are like, no, I agree with the core,
01:00:17.800 everything you said. It just, I didn't like the way that you said it. I would say, well,
01:00:23.200 Well, you know, it actually is a legitimate rhetorical move to unsettle a listener on purpose because you know how deeply ingrained the narrative is that you're combating.
01:00:33.360 So you have to, like, get them to actually stop and think about the thing you're talking about.
01:00:38.360 And I would just say, especially for the ladies who are upset, who do, who aren't unreasonable beyond, you know, who are like no matter what we say they're going to hate.
01:00:49.040 I would just say like, okay, think about why you respect Pastor Khan. And a lot of it's going to
01:00:55.800 come back to him saying hard things bluntly about situations other people aren't. And then I would
01:01:01.000 say, give him the benefit of the doubt when it strikes you as, you know, wow. And know this,
01:01:08.680 that like the regularly in this room or in this church, we're fallible men. We have
01:01:13.540 brothers and pastors around there are absolutely times when we've said to one another dude you
01:01:19.880 were off on that you're just wrong you shouldn't have said that so there are also checks and
01:01:25.220 balances here where if if dan and i had genuinely been like eric was out to lunch on this he is
01:01:30.980 wrong take it out we would have said it i mean the thing is i don't think the tweet was brash 0.96
01:01:37.000 or harsh it would have been harsh if eric had said uh god damn all of the men that put moral 0.75
01:01:44.620 extra biblical moral obligations on christians to adopt when it might be unwise that would have 0.92
01:01:51.220 been that would have been very strong that would have been strong yeah that would have been more 0.53
01:01:54.580 of a damn here's what i think yeah yeah maybe uh if i tweeted ever if one could imagine one could 0.78
01:02:00.740 think yeah i think this is what's going on though put put on your tinfoil hats for a moment 0.98
01:02:04.160 so there would not have been the outrage around this tweet if there weren't a certain group of
01:02:10.920 men the g3 guys in particular that had drawn attention to it and i think this was definitely
01:02:15.520 a strategy because i think is it really g3 macarthur phil johnson got involved etc yeah
01:02:21.640 yeah yeah and but they are connected yeah masters uh seminary is connected to g3 so
01:02:27.140 in some way and i don't know the inner workings of the anabaptists so
01:02:30.980 here's what i think is going on and so you have men like and i hope you haven't heard of most of
01:02:38.660 these guys because they're really not worth following but if you have like anthony bradley
01:02:42.980 or virgil walker owen strand uh phil johnson uh greg thornburg scott anniel scott anniel
01:02:52.140 Josh Buiz, all of these guys responded to Eric's tweet.
01:02:58.820 And the reason why I think is actually because they're coordinating efforts in order to gain ground and to see a movement that is possibly growing.
01:03:09.120 But there's a bigger issue going on.
01:03:11.220 So I think that's a strategy or a tactic that they might be using.
01:03:14.440 And I say that because they all dogpiled onto this one.
01:03:18.080 In almost the exact same way.
01:03:19.760 Yes, in the same way.
01:03:20.960 And the way they did it, though, is really, really concerning because we talk about them like emoting and like, I can't believe they said this.
01:03:28.540 But ultimately, if you were to boil down and reduce what they're saying, I could I have verses like Proverbs says a false witness who breathes out lies and one who sows discord among brothers.
01:03:43.460 I think ultimately what you see is a sin that's being cultivated, uh, like leaven within a lump
01:03:51.680 of dough in this G3 leadership is a sin of false witness in order to sow discord for their own
01:03:59.580 purposes. Yeah. Owen Strand bore false witness, obviously. Yes. Well, and that's what they're
01:04:04.320 trying to do is by twisting words and making assumptions. Yeah. Even, uh, so this Greg
01:04:09.700 thornburg guy i don't know if he's a g3 i honestly directors i think he's just a guy one of the least
01:04:15.660 clear thinkers i've ever encountered yes phil johnson though quote tweeted him that's why i
01:04:20.000 reference him he just goes off and says i'm going to assume eric's motivations as a kinest and then
01:04:26.720 he ascribes a whole lot of racist thoughts to this tweet that essentially says hey people said that
01:04:33.780 you were morally obligated to adopt and that it's something that you needed to do and it might not
01:04:39.360 be wise. And all of a sudden, you know, he's got this, uh, it was like seven points, uh, in a tweet
01:04:47.040 and, uh, again, by Scott annual and then Phil Johnson. Correct. Correct. And so that's why I
01:04:52.620 bring it up, but ultimately this is what's happening there. And honestly, for those that
01:04:57.400 are bearing false witness, may God have mercy on you. May God have mercy on you because there is
01:05:04.560 nothing but judgment that awaits you, especially when you're a teacher.
01:05:09.540 Yeah. It's like, how convenient is that if you have a rhetorical opponent that you need to defeat
01:05:13.620 and you can just make, it's an easy two-step move, win any argument in these two steps.
01:05:18.460 Dan, if you could pretend like you're arguing for some ridiculous position, like let's say that Dan
01:05:23.460 is arguing that Christians should desire for their politicians to bend the knee to Christ, 0.98
01:05:29.600 some ridiculous position like that. 0.86
01:05:32.320 And then I said, as an opponent of your view, 0.95
01:05:34.700 you were like, Psalm 2, no.
01:05:36.320 But, you know, Brian, it says in Psalm 2,
01:05:37.860 all these things, maybe we should consider these pastors.
01:05:39.600 If I said, that really sounds like someone,
01:05:42.480 I think something a serial killer would say.
01:05:44.620 Yeah.
01:05:45.840 Therefore, I win.
01:05:46.980 And it's very, it's hard to see.
01:05:48.420 I just, it's step one.
01:05:49.640 Just say the other person is guilty of an insanely bad sin.
01:05:54.120 And then step two, you win the argument.
01:05:56.600 So you guys can try that if you ever need that.
01:05:58.380 This is what's so concerning.
01:05:59.100 concerning yeah you got that to me as the the whole rhetorical process has been straight out
01:06:04.880 of the leftist playbook yeah it's what russ moore did for years it's what tabidi did for years it's
01:06:09.780 what you know beth moore all these people have done for years and so i think if you're following
01:06:14.240 any of the debate hopefully you're not hopefully you're like i have a peaceful life because i don't
01:06:18.700 look at that trash here's one thing to consider joe rigney said this in the interview this will
01:06:22.680 be coming out uh for listeners in coming weeks so look forward to that we did get into the christian 0.85
01:06:27.660 nationalism g3 thing and joe said i would say this about our anabaptist brothers when you are
01:06:35.040 continually strawmanning people eventually people will go back and see that that's not what they
01:06:40.420 said and then you are going to lose all credibility you'll lose credibility you're just destroying
01:06:44.780 yourself they might buy it one time might buy it twice but even the most like uh even the listener
01:06:52.360 who is the most with you to start with,
01:06:55.960 people have been doing this around your tweet.
01:06:58.240 They're like, but I'm kind of with these guys, 0.90
01:07:02.200 but this is ridiculous. 0.91
01:07:04.240 You're actually lying. 0.97
01:07:05.120 You're like, that's not true at all.
01:07:06.120 That's not what he said.
01:07:07.480 They'll eventually see through it
01:07:08.680 and you'll lose credibility.
01:07:10.000 It's like, this is why I don't worry
01:07:12.600 when a lot of people hate something
01:07:14.700 that comes out of Ogden.
01:07:16.720 As long as we've sat down and thought,
01:07:18.760 let's have the high ground in the sense
01:07:21.060 that we really are convinced
01:07:22.180 of what we said was true and timely and helpful, which we try to do that, obviously.
01:07:28.140 If 80% of the world reacts negatively to it and tone polices and all of that, I just say
01:07:32.620 we're playing the long game.
01:07:34.260 Must actually be an issue.
01:07:35.520 In 20 to 50 years, we'll see who was right about these principles.
01:07:40.000 Yeah.
01:07:40.500 And I'm willing to say we'll stack the fruit up.
01:07:43.580 We'll let our fruit do the talking at the end of the day, and they can let their fruit
01:07:47.560 talking.
01:07:47.900 And I, I hope the Lord bears good fruit in all these brothers who, who, you know, hate all of us.
01:07:54.500 I hope, cause I think it would mean repentance, but I mean, you know, like, let's, let's let the fruit do the talking at the end of the day.
01:08:00.640 And, and we'll see how it comes out.
01:08:02.080 People will say like, let's let the fruit do the talking.
01:08:04.760 Oh, they're, they're anti-adoption.
01:08:06.500 Well, no, here's some families in our churches that were very much behind who adopted doing a good job.
01:08:09.860 Love those kids.
01:08:10.840 Next. 0.99
01:08:11.680 Oh, they're racist and they, they hate all people. 0.99
01:08:14.320 Yeah. 0.99
01:08:14.640 Okay.
01:08:14.940 Well, here – why don't you ask any of the people in our church who are not – they don't look Nordic if we regularly put on white hoods and burn crosses in their driveways?
01:08:26.620 Well, no, they don't. 0.94
01:08:27.640 It's just – so much of it is so silly that we just chuckle and we chuckle.
01:08:34.800 We move on and we record hour-long podcast responses.
01:08:38.000 Yeah.
01:08:38.300 And by the way, I do think one of the reasons for responding, we did have a lot of faithful – they were in the 5%.
01:08:45.820 They were not people going crazy.
01:08:47.420 But they say, hey, here's some questions.
01:08:49.000 This would be helpful.
01:08:50.020 We'd ask that you speak to this issue.
01:08:53.560 I'll be on with Joel Webin later today for Right Response Ministries talking about the issue.
01:08:58.140 Joel, by the way, is adopted.
01:08:59.780 And Joel said, I'm adopted, and I agree with your tweet.
01:09:02.300 I actually adopted Joel.
01:09:03.420 I actually was going to beat you to it.
01:09:05.280 Joel is actually my son.
01:09:06.380 He's your son.
01:09:07.120 Yes.
01:09:07.500 breaking this just in you heard it here first uh other things that you might have heard here first
01:09:13.140 and this is this is we're gonna close on a happy a happy uh little thing here and that is brian
01:09:19.260 you have an album yes that is coming out for christmas um from what i understand if you've
01:09:24.760 heard of mariah carey christmas albums this is 100 not like that oh i was gonna say i was gonna
01:09:32.440 lean into it yeah it's exactly like mariah carey 100 except without like minus the flagrant and
01:09:39.700 modesty which nobody's asking for from me nobody's actually requested that from me i don't think it
01:09:46.560 would work to sell albums but i'm gonna be honest like my physique i don't think it would sell
01:09:50.820 albums if you had to give a quick pitch could you imagine that can you imagine i just do a shirtless
01:09:57.500 The title is like, all I want for Christmas is you.
01:10:01.020 No, it is.
01:10:02.220 It's just a very, this is a very simple raw acoustic EP.
01:10:06.060 I recorded, there's three, two classic hymns and one psalm setting on the album.
01:10:11.260 And they're almost all recorded with just me playing the song, guitar and the vocals
01:10:16.120 at the same time with a single mic in front of me.
01:10:18.300 Very raw.
01:10:19.440 Had Emily Heimstra play some viola.
01:10:21.820 A professional harmonica player came in and played some harmonica on one of them.
01:10:25.480 Was that you?
01:10:26.360 It was me.
01:10:27.500 I saw the spark.
01:10:30.020 Dan knew.
01:10:31.160 I kind of don't want to give away because I know it's a secret sauce.
01:10:33.980 You know, you buy an album, an EP, whatever you want to call it.
01:10:37.700 There's always a bonus track.
01:10:39.320 I believe the bonus track on this one is Radioactive.
01:10:42.620 You know, the listeners will have to wait and see.
01:10:48.140 Because if I buy mine and there's not, I'm going to be furious.
01:10:52.120 Well, you know how they have the Snyder cut, like the director's cut?
01:10:55.180 But I have the con cut, and I give it just for you.
01:10:59.120 Where at the end of two minutes of silence after the last track, you just – you hear me whispering the words to Radioactive.
01:11:06.600 Whispering.
01:11:07.260 You're welcome.
01:11:07.940 I want to hear the full song. 0.93
01:11:09.500 This is silly.
01:11:10.900 Is it though, Dan? 0.84
01:11:11.860 It's what we do.
01:11:13.060 In a very real sense.
01:11:13.620 Brian, where can people find this album?
01:11:16.640 Where can they buy it?
01:11:17.460 You'll be able to find this November 6th, Monday, and beyond.
01:11:21.780 And any streaming platform, Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, just look for my name, B-R-I-A-N-S-A-U-V-E.
01:11:30.760 On my website, which is the same thing, BrianSauve.com, there's links to all of those as well.
01:11:36.340 And just enjoy, guys.
01:11:38.560 Absolutely.
01:11:39.220 I hope it builds you up.
01:11:40.100 I do too.
01:11:40.960 I hope it builds you up.
01:11:41.880 Final plug.
01:11:42.760 I just want to – for people who are listening to The King's Hall and who have not listened to it yet, the second greatest podcast on the face of the planet behind this one.
01:11:51.780 Yeah.
01:11:52.880 Is.
01:11:53.180 Hard men.
01:11:54.220 Haunted.
01:11:55.060 Oh, okay.
01:11:56.180 So, uh, latest episode, Dyatlov Pass.
01:11:58.900 Yeah.
01:12:00.020 I mean, 30 second elevator pitch.
01:12:02.160 What's it about?
01:12:02.900 Why should they listen?
01:12:03.820 30 seconds.
01:12:04.800 Dyatlov Pass.
01:12:05.240 With the greatest story.
01:12:06.900 I know.
01:12:07.540 Told outside of the Bible.
01:12:08.900 Well, can I, can I, can I actually, by the way, I don't even know what Dyatlov Pass is.
01:12:13.520 Are you serious?
01:12:14.240 I don't know.
01:12:16.140 Wow.
01:12:16.860 Dyatlov Pass is one of the greatest mysteries of the modern world.
01:12:21.160 Why?
01:12:21.560 Why is it?
01:12:23.380 Why?
01:12:24.000 I don't want to give it away.
01:12:25.320 No, just give me.
01:12:26.140 In 1959, nine expert hikers were found dead in the Ural Mountains under suspicious circumstances,
01:12:33.260 scattered hundreds of yards from their tent, which they had cut out from the inside and
01:12:36.880 fled, many times unclothed into the sub-zero temperatures of the Siberian wilderness.
01:12:43.000 What drove these intrepid hikers from their tent?
01:12:46.160 What ate some of their faces?
01:12:48.120 What?
01:12:48.640 Find out on this week's episode of...
01:12:51.440 haunted cosmos dude he did that without no notes well here's why because we sat down and recorded
01:12:58.980 these are two hour episodes ben and i sat down and recorded the atloff pass we got an hour and
01:13:04.020 35 minutes in and then we're like hey let's pause got to go to the bathroom reach down to pause the
01:13:08.300 recording realize we hadn't you can't pause the recording you haven't started no so this has
01:13:14.160 happened yes multiple times now so then just once oh just once it was the atloff so we we we
01:13:21.260 wept openly. We went
01:13:23.700 to Chili's. We ate Chili's
01:13:25.740 and margaritas. Are you serious? Unreal.
01:13:27.360 We billed it to New Gristin and Press. I haven't
01:13:29.740 seen that receipt. You already reimbursed it.
01:13:31.940 Oh, I did. Okay. Oh, this was
01:13:33.740 a while ago. It was a while ago. Okay, all right.
01:13:35.340 And then we came back and we redid the whole thing.
01:13:37.740 That's why Eric and I justify all of
01:13:39.680 our work lunches. I know, yeah.
01:13:41.540 It's because of your Chili's. Yeah, right. It's because
01:13:43.700 of... Extravaganza. Well, we plan
01:13:45.720 every season at Chili's. That's another reason
01:13:47.860 you should... I mean, the whole thing's drenched
01:13:49.580 in seed oils.
01:13:51.180 What more can I say?
01:13:53.000 Sorry,
01:13:53.620 trying to pitch the show
01:13:54.780 or give it another show.
01:13:55.420 I'm sorry,
01:13:55.460 I'm just...
