00:00:36.240 This episode of the King's Hall is brought to you by Salt and Strings Butchery,
00:00:40.340 Private Family Banking, and our supporters at patreon.com.
00:00:44.560 In 1997, a book was published that took church youth and singles groups by storm.
00:00:50.460 A book that eventually sold over 1.2 million copies.
00:00:54.420 The book was titled, I Kissed Dating Goodbye.
00:00:58.880 The then 21-year-old author Joshua Harris encouraged Christians to give up dating and
00:01:04.440 discover a life of sincere love, true purity, and a purposeful singleness.
00:01:11.680 Joshua Harris, as a young man, was touted by the current vice president of content and
00:01:17.780 editor-in-chief of the Gospel Coalition as, quote, the evangelical wonder boy.
00:01:23.240 He was a rising star in the Sovereign Grace Ministries camp and became the face of the modern purity movement in American evangelicalism.
00:01:32.300 He later became the lead pastor in a Maryland megachurch and pastored there for nine years.
00:01:37.780 Everything appeared to be going well for Mr. Harris until he resigned in 2015, citing a lack of theological education as the reason.
00:01:46.620 He intended to attend Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, to receive theological instruction.
00:01:54.480 The following year, it appeared that his resignation for the purpose of theological education was not entirely genuine,
00:02:02.360 as he later apologized to those who were hurt by the purity culture and the approach he had taken in his book.
00:02:08.900 The trajectory continued when in July 2016, in a social media post,
00:02:13.900 He announced he was separating from his wife.
00:02:17.860 He said, quote,
00:02:43.900 times. Mr. Harris eventually divorced his wife. A few days after announcing the divorce,
00:02:50.700 he posted the following to social media. My heart is full of gratitude. I wish you could
00:02:56.240 see all the messages people sent me after the announcement of my divorce. There are expressions
00:03:00.820 of love, though they are saddened or even strongly disapprove of the decision. I am learning that no
00:03:06.700 group has the market quartered on grace. This week, I've received grace from Christians,
00:03:12.120 atheists, evangelicals, ex-vangelicals, straight people, LGBTQ people, and everyone in between.
00:03:20.320 Of course, he says, there have also been strong words of rebuke from religious people.
00:03:26.280 While not always pleasant, I know they are seeking to love me.
00:03:29.180 There have also been spiteful, hateful comments that angered and hurt me.
00:03:33.640 The information that was left out of our announcement is that I have undergone a massive shift
00:03:38.420 in regard to my faith in Jesus.
00:03:40.420 The popular phrase for this is deconstruction.
00:03:44.580 The biblical phrase is falling away.
00:03:47.260 By all the measurements I have for defining a Christian, I am not a Christian.
00:03:52.240 Many people tell me that there is a different way to practice faith,
00:03:56.020 and I want to remain open to this, but I'm not there now.
00:03:59.640 He goes on to say,
00:04:01.040 Martin Luther said that the entire life of believers should be repentance.
00:04:04.780 There is beauty in that sentiment, regardless of your view of God.
00:04:07.820 I lived in repentance for the past several years,
00:04:11.640 repenting of my self-righteousness,
00:04:13.580 my fear-based approach to life,
00:04:15.620 the teaching of my books,
00:04:17.140 my views of women in the church,
00:04:19.160 and my approach to parenting, to name a few.
00:04:21.840 But I specifically want to add this to the list now,
00:04:25.020 to the LGBTQ plus community.
00:04:27.640 I want to say I am very sorry for the views
00:04:29.780 that I taught in my books
00:04:31.660 and as a pastor regarding sexuality.
00:04:33.980 I regret standing against marriage equality
00:04:36.400 for not affirming you and your place in the church, and for any ways that my writing and
00:04:41.500 speaking contributed to a culture of exclusion and bigotry. I hope you can forgive me, end quote.
00:04:49.000 Joshua Harris, Goodreads, author profile, best describes his worth as a man of God. As it reads,
00:04:56.020 Joshua Harris lived outside Washington, D.C. in Gaithersburg, Maryland, where he was a pastor
00:05:02.000 of Covenant Life Church. His greatest passion was preaching the gospel and calling his generation
00:05:07.980 to wholehearted devotion to God. He since apostatized, divorced, and became an LGBTQ plus
00:05:14.940 advocate. One question we all should ask is this. What about his wife, Shannon? She must have assumed
00:05:22.060 she was marrying an evangelical wonder boy, a man who was a pastor, a man who was under the
00:05:27.540 leadership of renowned Christian leaders like C.J. Mahaney and Louis Giglio, a man who is
00:05:32.680 passionate about preaching the gospel, and not a worthless man that would abandon his wife and 0.94
00:05:38.840 promote homosexuality. How do we protect our daughters from marrying men like Joshua Harris? 0.87
00:05:45.340 How do we guide our sons to find women whose worth is more precious than jewels?
00:05:50.860 The King's Hall Podcast exists to make self-ruled men who rule well and win the world.
00:05:58.420 Well, welcome back, everybody, to another episode of The King's Hall.
00:06:02.820 I'm Brian Sauve, joined by my good friend, Daniel Burkholder.
00:06:07.400 Dan, say hi to the people.
00:06:08.500 Hello. It's just us two today.
00:06:09.940 It's just us, yep.
00:06:10.760 Yep. So normally we have a tribe of three, and now it's just a couple.
00:06:15.500 You know what? Let's go ahead and avoid that.
00:06:18.380 I think we can find it better.
00:06:20.000 After reading Joshua Harris's story, I mean, it seems like it's in the water.
00:06:25.160 It's all the rage, Dan.
00:06:27.020 No, Eric is out.
00:06:28.220 I could make a joke here.
00:06:29.640 I could say he's getting a pedicure.
00:06:31.800 I could say he's having, but he's actually doing something manly.
00:06:34.840 Well, he's not here to defend himself.
00:06:36.880 I say have at it.
00:06:38.420 Normally have any creative control in this podcast whatsoever.
00:06:42.240 I feel like it would be a low blow,
00:06:45.260 which I'm sure you guys withheld from when you did an episode without me, right?
00:06:49.880 Absolutely.
00:06:51.560 I don't even remember.
00:06:53.100 I don't remember either, so listeners, remind us.
00:06:56.460 i bet i bet we were very generous and you were probably very yeah yeah we didn't say anything
00:07:00.400 about any any french no nothing but no nothing no nothing like that never never he didn't say
00:07:08.360 brian sauvet like so gay didn't know i mean he might have said that okay all right see i mean
00:07:14.240 nothing he wouldn't say to your face that's actually true eric is chasing elk right now 0.62
00:07:18.940 in the i would say great state of colorado but it's not really that great it's all right
00:07:24.740 It's mountains are great.
00:07:26.340 Yeah, true.
00:07:27.240 Government's not great.
00:07:28.080 The government is not great in Colorado.
00:07:29.940 No, it's not really great many places,
00:07:32.640 but that's for a different discussion.
00:07:35.080 That's for a different discussion today.
00:07:36.680 Season three, maybe.
00:07:37.500 Season three.
00:07:38.080 I mean, we might, I don't know.
00:07:39.700 Should we tease without Eric here?
00:07:41.760 Maybe not.
00:07:42.380 It's going to be great, guys.
00:07:43.340 Season three.
00:07:43.900 Again, we have complete creative control.
00:07:45.400 Yeah, we can do whatever we want.
00:07:46.340 We're coming to the end of season two here on Fatherhood,
00:07:49.400 and we've got some really great stuff cooking for season three.
00:07:53.620 I'm really excited for it.
00:07:55.240 It's actually going to be a big change of pace from what we've done here in season two, but also, I think, really connect with some of the things that have made our show from the beginning what it is.
00:08:06.420 Well, yeah, in season one, we took a pretty expansive view of examining old Christendom and the idols of our day and how to build new Christendom.
00:08:16.580 And we really zeroed in on one aspect that was key to building the new Christendom of fatherhood.
00:08:24.080 And we'll be zooming back out and taking a macro look.
00:08:28.360 Looking more macro.
00:08:30.280 We've been doing our research, our reading.
00:08:31.960 We're reading up right now, getting edumacated.
00:08:33.600 Man, the books I have right now that I probably will never read is growing by the day.
00:08:39.420 The to read for season three.
00:08:42.100 Well, they're there.
00:08:43.320 By osmosis, I should get something from these books sitting next to me.
00:08:46.580 The back cover is just as good as reading it.
00:08:48.900 I bought them.
00:08:50.020 I purchased them.
00:08:50.660 On my Goodreads, that's how I count it as read.
00:08:52.620 Yeah, it's right there.
00:08:54.880 So today in this episode, we're going to be talking about really one of the most important tasks of a father.
00:09:00.420 And it's a task that, like, quite honestly, we get a lot of questions about, have had many discussions, and I've asked my own questions of older men, and have thought quite a bit about in my own fatherhood.
00:09:13.060 I'm sure Dan has thought as well. And as we've worked on pastoring and shaping this community
00:09:17.520 here in Ogden, it's one of the big things on our mind. And that is marriage, the next generation.
00:09:22.980 Basically, how can we as fathers help our children to marry well? How can we help our sons and our
00:09:30.860 daughters to marry well, or at least to put them in a position? Obviously, we can't do anything for
00:09:36.740 our children. They have to make their own decisions at some level as they come into judicial maturity
00:09:42.160 and they come into this decision-making time of their life.
00:09:44.660 But there are some ways we believe
00:09:46.780 that fathers have responsibility
00:09:48.680 and strong responsibility
00:09:49.780 to make it easier for their children to marry well 1.00
00:09:53.100 and avoid marrying fools. 0.99
00:09:56.020 I think this is one of the most important issues 1.00
00:09:58.640 that as a father you can think through
00:10:00.520 because we've all probably seen this in our own families,
00:10:04.580 just how devastating it can be 1.00
00:10:06.980 for somebody to marry a fool. 1.00
00:10:11.100 Yeah, I know. 0.99
00:10:11.460 So there's an example in my wife's extended family where one of her great-great-uncles or someone was known as being this really great man.
00:10:24.560 Yeah.
00:10:24.780 Like a man that was seen as a rising star.
00:10:28.360 He was a go-getter.
00:10:30.460 He was lively.
00:10:32.500 He was funny, vivacious sort of guy.
00:10:36.380 And he ended up marrying someone that was, I guess, a stick in the mud.
00:10:41.460 As you can say, his life took a different trajectory.
00:10:46.220 And it's really sad.
00:10:48.520 We've probably all seen situations where a sibling or a friend or someone you grew up in school with or church with marries some guy and then he ends up cheating on her or leaving her with the kids.
00:11:04.360 And then he's off somewhere doing crazy stuff and abandoning her.
00:11:08.520 We've all seen that time and time again.
00:11:10.400 And in the other direction as well, where a man marries a wife and thinks everything's going to be great.
00:11:17.040 And then the next thing he knows, she's divorcing him, taking his kids, putting him on the alimony.
00:11:23.140 What is it?
00:11:23.560 Alimony, is that what it's called?
00:11:24.760 Yeah.
00:11:25.240 Yeah.
00:11:25.620 Child support.
00:11:26.700 Trained for taking 50% of his income or whatever for the next 20 years of his life.
00:11:32.380 And in that direction as well, he has the added burden of having the court system be completely arrayed against him.
00:11:39.260 Do you think the courts are against men?
00:11:42.760 No.
00:11:43.880 You know what?
00:11:44.760 I don't want to be a conspiracy theorist.
00:11:47.620 So let me be more careful with my words and say yes.
00:11:52.000 I do believe that that is the case.
00:11:55.960 So there's a lot at stake here.
00:11:58.000 I think this is one of the things that as your kids start to grow, it grows in your mind.
00:12:03.020 You start to think, ooh, this is โ€“ I met a guy at County Before Country, Michael Foster's conference in Ohio.
00:12:09.260 a few weeks ago and he had something like seven daughters and I and some of them were coming into
00:12:15.340 that like late teen years and I was just thinking wow good for you like first of all amazing
00:12:23.440 praise God what a blessing and then I thought wow you have to find seven worthy men for these 1.00
00:12:32.500 daughters to marry them. This is terrifying. Terrifying. When I think of the state of young
00:12:40.060 people in America. Well, you'd think that once your young kids are raised, you'd actually get
00:12:44.720 sleep. Yeah. No, now you're up praying them off. Yeah. You're up praying, Lord, protect them from
00:12:50.680 that idiot. And, you know, that's, that's keeps trying to flirt with her at work. Oh Lord. So 1.00
00:12:57.700 So anyway, I think a good place to start, Dan, would probably be by making a distinction that's really important in this conversation, and that's on principles versus methods.
00:13:07.400 Because I think a lot of what people tend to do in this conversation is โ€“ and particularly people that don't have experience in it, that haven't like actually gone through the process yet or maybe they had a really bad experience in their upbringing and they're just reacting completely the other way.
00:13:24.040 And they sort of come up with some method of dating and courtship and marriage.
00:13:30.100 It's usually courtship and a model of how the father is to be involved, how the whole handing off process of authority is supposed to work.
00:13:39.040 So essentially like a government.
00:13:40.900 Yeah. 1.00
00:13:41.300 How do we build a bureaucracy to protect us against the foolish man or the foolish woman? 0.98
00:13:47.400 And then can kind of end up acting like that method for marrying came down on Sinai with Moses. 0.99
00:13:57.300 And it was, you know, this is set in stone.
00:13:59.020 It's the courtship model.
00:14:00.120 It's this.
00:14:01.240 And if anybody ever says the D word, dating, in my presence, like, it's over. 0.65
00:14:07.300 I'm going to assault you and probably question whether you're even a Christian in the first place.
00:14:12.960 I mean, it may be valid.
00:14:14.580 It may be valid.
00:14:15.760 Do you see that there's principles versus methods issue? And how do you think that plays in dating versus courtship? I mean, with Joshua Harris's book there at the beginning, obviously, sort of set a big movement towards this one method being like the be all end all. What are your thoughts on that?
00:14:33.060 that's interesting question i you know what's funny is in 1997 when the book was published i
00:14:38.340 was in youth group nice i was in the youth group i was 12 i was 12 then yeah so i was actually
00:14:45.300 in the book i i read the book have you read the book i know you know what i escaped reading that
00:14:50.000 book somehow you kissed the good book goodbye i kissed i kissed i kissed dating goodbye goodbye
00:14:55.620 yeah i read the book but i was a teenager so i i remembered nothing yeah it didn't didn't make
00:15:00.900 any impression at all. I remember nothing. No, this is human instinct, right? This is where you
00:15:05.600 get churches, ecclesiology, the church government, where you get the Congregationalist or the
00:15:11.580 Presbyterian or whatever, you know, plurality, the Moses model. And people are like, this is the way,
00:15:17.680 this is the only way. And it will protect us from things going awry. And so when you approach
00:15:25.000 pretty much any human institution this way with a government of some sort saying the government
00:15:31.020 itself, the system itself will protect us, not realizing that you could have the most robust
00:15:37.160 Presbyterian system, the most robust congregationalist system in a church. And if you
00:15:42.240 put wicked men in leadership, guess what? You've got a wicked government and it'll be horrible. 0.94
00:15:49.600 It'll go very badly for you. And so people definitely do approach the dating courtship
00:15:56.120 scene in this way. I haven't had as much direct experience with this because in the culture I
00:16:02.060 grew up in was more like encouraging. I guess that's part of the, I kiss dating goodbye,
00:16:06.420 but encouraging singleness. Like wait until you're wise, wait until you're called and wait
00:16:12.260 until you're mature before you pursue a wife. I got married in my late twenties and I really wish
00:16:18.360 that I had been prepared earlier to be married,
00:16:22.260 personal regrets.
00:16:23.140 But this seems to be a theme amongst people of my time
00:16:27.720 and I'm sure in your generation as well,
00:16:30.080 we're the same generation, we're both millennials.

00:17:19.840 street and avoid the coming banking meltdown go to the link in the show notes for more information
00:17:24.920 yeah just different sides of it right right and so you see a lot of people uh delaying marriage
00:17:36.860 uh as a protection yeah right a protection from foolishness i mean but it's not going to
00:17:43.240 it's not going to be the ultimate end-all be-all.
00:17:46.020 Any one of these things. 0.99
00:17:47.200 You could delay marriage and instead of being a young fool, 1.00
00:17:50.320 you could be an old fool. 1.00
00:17:51.480 Yeah. 1.00
00:17:52.280 Right?
00:17:52.680 So none of these things are guarantees.
00:17:55.200 So I think the methods and principles distinction is very important
00:17:59.800 when you're approaching these sorts of situations
00:18:02.440 because methods can be helpful.
00:18:04.900 Yeah.
00:18:05.140 Especially if you have wise men.
00:18:07.740 You know, if you're a younger single person 0.99
00:18:10.440 and you have a foolish father, 0.99
00:18:12.400 you would probably not or a foolish mother you would not want them involved to the degree 1.00
00:18:18.920 of a person that has a wise father or a wise mother whom whose judgment you trust yeah that 0.97
00:18:27.100 government of protection is going to be a much more advantageous government it's going to be
00:18:33.460 much more beneficial to you yeah and so you have to have the principles in place before you start
00:18:40.520 implementing a lot of the methods. Yeah. You want to make sure that the principles are in the
00:18:44.940 driver's seat and then that they're applied with wisdom because where the wisdom is needed,
00:18:49.800 it is needed in establishing the correct principles, obviously. But then where the
00:18:54.900 principles make contact with your actual life, that's where it gets really important that you
00:19:00.420 don't mistake a certain method for the only possible way of doing things. You know, especially
00:19:06.980 if you're in a different, like when we're talking about marrying our children or seeing our
00:19:10.500 children married well. We're going to face lots of circumstances, but one of the circumstances
00:19:14.920 that's going to be the most common is an immature Christian culture. So a lot of the courtship as
00:19:21.420 a model, and we'll build this out a little bit, a lot of the courtship model really depends upon
00:19:26.320 at least some semblance of a mature Christian community that is with you.
00:19:31.260 in 2023 indigo sundries became one of our sponsors at the time their business was little
00:19:42.480 more than a side hobby generating a couple hundred dollars a month but because of their
00:19:46.280 partnership with us and because all of you chose to support them they've grown enough to make it
00:19:50.140 their full-time livelihood this is what happens when christians support christians our communities
00:19:54.240 are strengthened and faithful businesses thrive so if you're a christian business owner who wants
00:19:58.400 to reach thousands of like-minded people and grow your company, we'd love to partner with you.
00:20:03.000 Email us at advertising at newchristendompress.com.
00:20:11.080 Yeah, right. And that's, I mean, probably not going to be the norm for most people.
00:20:16.640 No.
00:20:16.880 Even an immature Christian community locally, because what's going to happen, especially for
00:20:21.940 our sons, a lot of daughters as well, is they will either go to college and meet someone,
00:20:27.900 or they will go to work
00:20:29.960 and they will move away from home.
00:20:31.520 They will be apart from the community.
00:20:33.680 And so that protection of community,
00:20:35.700 whether mature or immature,
00:20:37.660 within your local context for a father,
00:20:42.400 it's not going to happen.
00:20:44.600 And so a lot of those methods would just not work.
00:20:47.700 They just won't, a lot of them won't work.
00:20:49.440 When we're talking about the courtship model,
00:20:50.740 just to be clear,
00:20:51.760 what we're describing is this model
00:20:53.740 of marrying off children
00:20:55.120 where as they come into their marriageable age,
00:20:57.680 coming into their late teens, into their early 20s, a father is essentially helping on the side
00:21:03.740 of a son, let's say, identify another Christian family that has an eligible single woman,
00:21:09.900 a daughter somewhere that he would like his son to get to know. And hey, son, are you interested
00:21:13.900 in Mary Jo over there? And yeah, absolutely. When we were at homeschool co-op, she was doing that
00:21:20.300 square dance and it was captivating. Oh, wow. That's going to be clipped out and put on YouTube.
00:21:26.640 She is godly. 1.00
00:21:28.080 Her denim skirt is... 0.99
00:21:30.020 Denim skirts are great.
00:21:31.580 I'm really not making fun of homeschool.
00:21:33.320 A little bit I am.
00:21:34.320 I actually really don't like denim skirts.
00:21:36.420 Hey, they can be more and well.
00:21:38.360 Am I not supposed to...
00:21:39.240 I think there is new rules out there
00:21:41.180 where you cannot critique women's attire at all.
00:21:43.940 No, well, that's a new old rule.
00:21:45.940 Well, I just discovered it.
00:21:47.060 Yeah, you're not allowed to do that.
00:21:48.700 Yeah.
00:21:49.140 You know, so the dad is like,
00:21:50.900 look, son, Joe, are you interested in Mary Sue?
00:21:54.260 Yes, I am.
00:21:54.840 All right, well,
00:21:55.440 why don't you go and talk to her father and maybe the father sets up a meeting with the other father
00:22:01.200 who's also a wise and judicious christian man a lot of christian maturity and they agree yes
00:22:06.840 this is a worthwhile hey mary you know the other dad asks mary was it mary joe that i said well
00:22:11.860 you said mary joe but then the guy's name with joe and so then you said mary it wasn't mary sue
00:22:17.560 mary sue let's say mary sounds like it wasn't mary jane yeah it's not mary jane because that's
00:22:21.820 a different conversation and kids don't do the ganj okay don't do it oh man it'll eat your brain
00:22:27.640 okay so then the both fathers are involved in this courtship model there's some protection
00:22:33.820 this is great there's protection from for the the daughter because her father can be the first line
00:22:40.120 of defense where maybe she has no interest in joe yeah she's like i don't i just i don't like him
00:22:45.120 for whatever and that's fair she's allowed to not like him right she might tell her dad you know
00:22:48.440 what? I'm not interested. The dad can let the other, the other dad know, or they can let him
00:22:52.820 down easy, uh, whether directly or through the parents. So you have parental involvement.
00:22:58.000 Or she says, I would like to date him. And he says, I know his reputation and he is not good
00:23:04.420 or he is good. Yeah. One of those, any of those different situations, the father's involved.
00:23:09.560 And then let's say they come to an agreement that there's going to be a courtship. Well,
00:23:13.020 from the beginning, the goal is to get these two married or to, they each want their child to be
00:23:17.760 married to a godly christian spouse right so then the fathers or the parents get involved and they
00:23:23.160 set up some chaperoned talks you know you think little house on the prairie when uh the who is it
00:23:30.820 laura is courted by what's sorry i i didn't get that far in the books i lost interest it's been
00:23:37.720 a while since i've read them but uh you know you see this play out they're together in supervised
00:23:43.620 context. They might have some, they might even, parents might organize the thing where the two
00:23:48.440 kids, after they get to know each other, get to go out somewhere and, you know, have dinner or
00:23:52.040 something. Scandalous. Scandalous. Eat food together? But it's all supervised. And then
00:23:57.180 the thought, you know, the son says, can I, I am, you know, I think this is going well. Can I
00:24:01.240 ask your daughter to marry me? Permission? Yep. Here you go. They get, and then there's an overseen
00:24:06.800 period of engagement ending in a marriage. And there's a handoff of authority where a daughter
00:24:11.940 who's submitting to her father is now given away on her wedding day to submit to her new husband.
00:24:18.580 And all of that is amazing. In a lot of ways, if you were to paint a picture of the ideal,
00:24:23.680 in my mind, that would be it. It might look something like that. It's going to have a lot
00:24:27.940 of cultural differences and all that. But one of the problems with making that model the only
00:24:33.840 possible way of finding spouse is that there actually aren't that many human beings in those
00:24:39.880 categories today. It's just very difficult for most people to find a family with wise Christian
00:24:46.180 parents who are also on the same page there. And the other thing is that even then, that's not a
00:24:53.000 guarantee. It's not a guarantee. No, it's not. Both of those, that man and that woman who get
00:24:58.520 married, they can go off the rails. Either one of them can fall into sin and can wreck the marriage.
00:25:04.060 So it's a good method for sure, but it's not a guarantee, and also it's not โ€“ it didn't come down with Moses on Sinai.
00:25:18.040 God didn't give all of these parameters in terms of finding a spouse so that you could say, well, that any other method is necessarily and intrinsically sinful.
00:25:27.740 Right, right.
00:25:28.420 It is a good method given a particular context.
00:25:31.700 Yes.
00:25:32.060 Right?
00:25:32.260 Yeah. 0.90
00:25:32.620 But in, we don't have to look very far in our own families to see, you know, maybe we talked about like marrying a worthless man or, or, you know, a worthless woman or a foolish woman, but maybe, maybe it's not that maybe, maybe they had like a really healthy marriage, but one of the parents on that side is actually worthless. 0.80
00:25:55.080 Like, would you want to court a godly woman who has a foolish father? 0.91
00:26:00.840 Like, would you want him overseeing that to that degree? 0.99
00:26:05.040 Yeah.
00:26:05.780 Or he's an unbeliever and she's a believer.
00:26:08.100 You know, there's a lot of different contexts in where the method doesn't really work as well.
00:26:14.240 And the other thing you find out is that one tendency in courtship model cultures, one tendency is actually to overstate the father's authority.
00:26:25.400 There's a cultural ditch where you can understate the father's authority.
00:26:29.020 It's very common in our culture where the father's like, the daughter doesn't care.
00:26:32.500 The son doesn't care about dad.
00:26:34.160 He's not involved in this at all.
00:26:35.420 Whatever makes you happy. 1.00
00:26:36.740 Yeah, he's probably a bumbling idiot. 1.00
00:26:38.760 That's stupid, obviously. 1.00
00:26:39.820 We want to be fathers with gravitas who have understood real authority in our homes given by God. 0.99
00:26:46.520 But there is an edge to the authority, and some of these courtship models actually also worked well in contexts where you not only had a mature Christian community in terms of other families, but you had a mature civil polity and ecclesial polity in the community.
00:27:01.240 because you run into issues sometimes where maybe two eligible Christians have decided that they've,
00:27:09.280 you know, maybe they've courted for a time or whatever. They think that we want to get married.
00:27:12.720 And the man asks for permission. Father says, no. And let's say he asks, okay, why not? I'd love to,
00:27:20.380 are there some standards I'm not meeting? And is humble. Well, you know, son, you just,
00:27:26.520 I don't want my daughter marrying someone in the trades.
00:27:30.220 I want her to marry a white-collar guy.
00:27:32.280 Is that a reasonable reason to forbid marriage? 0.81
00:27:36.020 And you find that sometimes church courts and even civil courts needed to step in.
00:27:42.400 Historically.
00:27:42.860 Historically.
00:27:43.540 In Calvin's Geneva, you could sue.
00:27:46.600 A couple could take a father to court who refused permission spuriously.
00:27:52.280 So in a setting where you probably don't have that possibility, right, where a son, a young man, maybe he's intent upon marrying a young woman and they have genuinely met all of the biblical requirements for getting married.
00:28:06.160 He's able to provide their chase.
00:28:08.560 They're both Christians.
00:28:09.240 They're not an equally yoked.
00:28:10.140 There's no reason why they shouldn't be able to pursue marriage and one father just obstinately for some reason says, no, I don't like your face, whatever it is, right?
00:28:21.480 Well, there needs to be another authoritative structure that can step in and adjudicate that case.
00:28:28.000 And in many situations, that doesn't exist.
00:28:31.340 And so we do need to make sure that we don't end up saying, which a lot of courtship, like on the brutes on the ground, a lot of the courtship model can tend towards actually ending up believing that the father has absolute authority.
00:28:45.360 That no other authority can step in and say, you're being unreasonable.
00:28:49.660 You're being unbiblical.
00:28:50.860 You're requiring that which God does not require.
00:28:54.120 You need to give your permission to this marriage.
00:28:57.660 Yeah, so that authority can attempt to stop unions, to stop marriages.
00:29:02.660 But on the other ditch, it can also do some strange things with arranged marriages.
00:29:08.420 Yes.
00:29:08.820 Because their authority extends so far in their minds that they're โ€“ what does Eric call it?
00:29:15.160 Prairie muffins?
00:29:16.520 Is that โ€“
00:29:17.120 I think that is what Eric is.
00:29:17.800 Is that something that will have to be cut?
00:29:20.580 You know what?
00:29:21.660 I don't know if that's a derogatory term.
00:29:23.620 I've been too scared to ask the whole time Eric's been using that phrase, so maybe we should.
00:29:27.280 I don't know. 0.96
00:29:27.740 We should just cut that because I'm so ignorant. 0.98
00:29:30.420 Your call. 0.97
00:29:32.140 Ray, Google it, and then I trust your judgment.
00:29:35.940 So whereas essentially two fathers get together and they're like, yeah, let's arrange this marriage.
00:29:40.920 And it's kind of like set up from the beginning to happen that way, and they just direct them.
00:29:45.300 Yeah. By the way, that that I imagine produces some some marriages that are probably set up in the best terms. But yeah, there can be great marriages that way. But you can also have a lot of bitterness where, you know, maybe a daughter or son, he didn't want to marry.
00:30:00.020 she didn't want to marry that person. And there was a lot of strong pressure. And now you really
00:30:06.660 end up robbing everybody because now you have a man say that's married to a wife that didn't
00:30:11.240 really want to marry him. She was just pressured and didn't know how to assert, you know, any kind
00:30:16.080 of preference. And now she's just married and there's a covenant there and they must be true
00:30:21.400 to it, but it might not have been a wise match because you need compassion. You actually do need
00:30:26.900 like desire and respect and love at the center of a marriage for it to be a joyful Christian
00:30:33.880 marriage. There needs to be desire. So I think there are some ditches when we get to the talk.
00:30:39.700 If we elevate the courtship model to the level of a commandment, we err. On the other side,
00:30:47.140 we have the dating model, which is ubiquitous in our culture. People go out, they grow into
00:30:52.700 adulthood, sometimes not even, you know, 14, 15, 16. I mean, I can attest. Oh, I thought you were
00:30:58.000 talking about like 30 year olds that aren't really adults. No, no, no. I actually meant like some
00:31:02.000 people start dating when they're dating when they're 14. Oh yeah. Or whatever. But do you,
00:31:06.080 do you recommend that? No. Oh, okay. I was just definitely not. Yeah, no. And on this model,
00:31:13.300 it's much more self-directed. There might be permission asked, there might not from a father,
00:31:17.560 but it's basically go out, find a person you want to get married, go on some dates,
00:31:20.660 figure out if you want to marry him. And again, there's no reason why a dating model needs to
00:31:24.980 involve sin. You can still get permission from a father, honor his authority, all these things.
00:31:28.840 I think it's important for us in this initial part of the conversation, when you're thinking
00:31:33.000 about marrying off your children, dating versus courtship, all these things, what are some
00:31:36.580 principles that are going to be true regardless of the method that's used to find the spouse
00:31:43.880 at the end of the day? What are some principles non-negotiables? I'll give you an example,
00:31:47.240 And then I'd love your thoughts, Dan. So one example, and I'm going to give the most obvious. Your children must marry Christians. That's a principle. We're not going to be unequally yoked. There's a command there. And so my children โ€“ and I think there's also sub tiers to that where it's like I am a Reformed Presbyterian Christian man and my daughter's Reformed Presbyterian.
00:32:11.220 So it would probably be unwise for her to marry an extraordinarily charismatic Pentecostal young man who handles snakes regularly.
00:32:22.080 Oh, wow.
00:32:22.340 You went extreme.
00:32:23.020 I was just going to go 1689 Baptist.
00:32:25.380 Well, unequal yoking can โ€“
00:32:27.040 A joke for everybody if you didn't get it.
00:32:28.960 Obviously, unequal yoking can occur not just at the level of are they a Christian.
00:32:33.280 It can occur in other levels too.
00:32:34.680 But that would be an example of a principle that courtship or dating, whatever method you use, that's a principle we're aiming for.
00:32:42.340 What are some other examples of that?
00:32:43.960 Yeah, so this principle I think also ties in with the methods.
00:32:48.240 And the danger with dating is that it's in isolation.
00:32:51.740 And so one of the things that I think is very important is that you cannot do this alone.
00:32:56.640 Wise counsel is needed.
00:32:58.300 Yes.
00:32:58.540 Wise counsel is needed because everybody knows, having been in a relationship before, especially guys with a woman, and I'm sure I've never been a female. 0.61
00:33:07.580 I don't know what females think, but they seem to be smitten with men at certain points in their lives.
00:33:13.280 And when you start using attractions and emotions to make your decisions, quite often, I don't know, you don't tend to make the best choices.
00:33:23.220 You might end up led away by your heart flutters.
00:33:27.500 But your heart flutters. That's a nice way to put it. Yeah. Yeah. So it is important if you don't have a wise father to have a pastor. Yeah. Or somebody that has accountability and ownership now in your relationship. Yes.
00:33:44.400 So that that person with an uninterested third party, as far as like, you know, the heart flutters, as you call it, can judge with wise judgment to make sure that neither one of you are actually making a grave error.
00:33:57.940 I mean, a lot of that goes into like premarital counseling.
00:34:00.820 Maybe you don't realize this, but, well, you realize this, Brian, but dear listener, you might not realize this.
00:34:07.780 Most, I would say, premarital counseling is not even necessarily a benefit to future husband and wife.
00:34:14.480 Some of it is that.
00:34:15.740 But a lot of it is going to be the pastor vetting one another to see if you guys are actually a good match.
00:34:22.160 Yeah, the first thing I'm trying to figure out when I'm counseling somebody for marriage, premarital counseling, is should they be married at all?
00:34:31.480 And I tell them that first meeting, I might tell you not to get married.
00:34:34.680 I steal that from you.
00:34:35.860 Well, it's a good โ€“ I mean, I probably stole it from someone else, but that's an example of a great principle.
00:34:41.620 There should be โ€“ you're not just doing this by yourself out floating.
00:34:44.580 You need Christian community.
00:34:46.400 There's wisdom in a multitude of counselors.
00:34:48.160 I think another principle that's related to this is that your whatever method you use, it must honor the structures of authority that God has established in the world.
00:34:58.460 So that means the father and the mother need to be involved.
00:35:02.480 And with the asterisk that that must that principle must be applied with wisdom. 1.00
00:35:08.060 If the father is a crackhead idiot who has made a wreck of his life, you shouldn't you would be a fool to take his counsel. 1.00
00:35:15.720 You need to actively actually disregard his counsel. So this doesn't mean that that non-Christian or apostate or actively in sin father who refuses to submit to church to any other authorities, to church authority, that he has some kind of absolute authority on the level of God. No. All human authorities, all lesser authorities below the authority of God are contingent. So they all are subject to authorities outside of themselves. 1.00
00:35:43.600 I think a good barometer that goes along with these two principles that we talked about is that if you're tempted to hide your relationship from these wise authorities, then that should be a red flag.
00:35:55.200 You're probably โ€“ I mean we've all done something, relationship or otherwise, maybe investing or something else to where you're like, man, I hope nobody finds out I'm about to do this because it would be kind of shameful.
00:36:09.360 Yes.
00:36:10.040 Yeah.
00:36:10.280 If that's a temptation, that should be a big red flag.
00:36:12.740 Yeah.
00:36:13.600 I think another principle, you know, so we're talking about wise counsel. We're talking about honoring the authorities God's built into the world, marrying equally yoked. I think another good principle would be that whether you date or court or you're encouraging your children to do one or the other is that you need to make allowances for the sheer power of God's creative design for sexuality.
00:36:41.660 meaning that you have to understand that a man was designed to desire a woman sexually and a
00:36:49.180 woman was designed to desire the man sexually and they're designed to want that's a good thing
00:36:53.500 and there's a category where paul says if you burn it would be better to be married than to
00:36:57.700 burn with lust he's acknowledging that there's a category where that good thing is very powerfully
00:37:02.860 good but it also has a lot of gravity and so teaching your children this you know as you date
00:37:08.580 or court, if you're maybe at that age yourself and listening to this podcast, you need to give
00:37:13.280 yourself in moments of sobriety, you need to be honest about how powerful that temptation will be
00:37:19.700 to go and sin or to make a wreck of things with premarital sexual activity and contact or whatever
00:37:27.740 it is, crossing lines. And so fathers need to be honest with their children about that,
00:37:33.680 And they need to be establishing walls for the son and the daughter and for the, you know, the potential spouse, future spouse or whatever it is, the boyfriend, the girlfriend, whatever you call it in your model.
00:37:46.960 The father needs to be involved in the level that he is actively checking in, guarding, saying, son, now, like, let's be honest here that you're dating a beautiful young woman and you want to be married.
00:37:59.520 Don't screw it up.
00:38:00.940 Here's how you might screw it up.
00:38:02.300 you're going to be tempted to screw it up like this.
00:38:05.300 Don't do it.
00:38:06.660 Let me help you.
00:38:07.920 So there's a principle in there.
00:38:09.100 I don't know how to put it succinctly.
00:38:10.260 That was like five minutes.
00:38:11.280 But, you know, where you're recognizing-
00:38:13.940 Is this purity culture?
00:38:15.220 This is purity culture, my guy.
00:38:17.160 Well, no, you know, Song of Solomon 8 is what it is.
00:38:19.980 Song of Solomon 8, verses 8 and 9,
00:38:23.260 we see this little vignette in the poetry
00:38:26.100 where it's like if our sister is a wall,
00:38:28.640 then we will adorn her with silver or something like that. 0.89
00:38:31.980 and we'll build her up if she's a door then we will encircle around you know like bait then we'll
00:38:37.620 make her a wall and the point is that the woman is it's a reflective moment in the poem like looking
00:38:43.480 back on her life before the suitor comes in blah blah blah so she's saying you know i she ends up
00:38:49.460 saying i recognize i was a wall and that but the brothers are involved here like there's family
00:38:55.180 involved and they are they are charged with knowing the in this case the daughter their sister
00:39:01.420 their younger sister i'm assuming and knowing like okay is she a wall like if she's a wall that 0.77
00:39:07.200 means that she's guarded she's protected she's not just opening up to any passing tom dick or harry 0.99
00:39:13.940 right she's not dan she's she's not you know promiscuous or loose she she understands the 0.99
00:39:21.120 the glory of her sexuality her chasteness she's and the power of chase of chastity and so in that 0.99
00:39:27.460 case build her up we had we adorn her we make her even more glorious right but if she's a door
00:39:32.460 if she's like boys oh yeah no no don't do that come on you know what i'm saying i know what 0.99
00:39:41.300 you're saying i know what you're saying if she tends to be a little bit more bubbly and flirtatious
00:39:45.720 yes then we will enclose her with boards of cedar is so the the authorities the people who love her
00:39:52.440 They know her, and so they're reading the situation, and they're making sure that she's guarded.
00:39:58.400 I mean, that's a principle there.
00:40:00.060 Courtship, dating, whatever.
00:40:01.100 The principle is that we guard that which is valuable so that it can be properly given, not thrown out into the streets.
00:40:09.360 So tell me why you have a low view of women again?
00:40:12.580 I mean, I hear this all the time. 0.99
00:40:14.280 Low view.
00:40:15.160 Yeah, yeah, yeah. 1.00
00:40:16.620 No, that a woman is so valuable she needs to be guarded. 1.00
00:40:18.800 Yeah, she's awesome as a mighty host. 1.00
00:40:21.560 She's an army with her banners flown. 1.00
00:40:23.320 Oh, man.
00:40:24.160 Who is this?
00:40:25.140 I was wondering why you knew Song of Solomon, chapter 8, verses 8 and 9.
00:40:29.900 You wrote a song.
00:40:31.680 Yeah.
00:40:32.000 Clear as the moon.
00:40:33.240 Okay, anyway, I'm done.
00:40:34.080 Man, we need Eric here.
00:40:35.420 I just.
00:40:36.140 We need Eric here.
00:40:37.540 We need bullying.
00:40:39.240 Yeah. 0.50
00:40:39.780 Bring back, make bullying great again.
00:40:41.600 When it's just one-on-one, it's harder to do.
00:40:43.480 It's easier to gang up on someone.
00:40:45.100 It really is.
00:40:46.120 And it's much easier.
00:40:47.800 So there's a principle.
00:40:48.800 There's a good principle of just recognizing the power and the draw and that that's a good
00:40:54.160 thing.
00:40:54.860 And so encircling, putting up guards, like that's one of the things the courtship model 0.98
00:40:59.780 is trying to do.
00:41:00.840 Yeah, no.
00:41:01.360 And it does a good job of it in the right context with wise men, you know, overseeing
00:41:06.220 it.
00:41:06.680 You know, another thing to consider, I don't know if this would be a principle as much
00:41:10.660 as just a truism is whomever your son or daughter is interested in pursuing marriage
00:41:17.700 with if you look to his or her parents she has been formed by them yeah that is just a data point
00:41:25.280 to be aware of yes and so if if your daughter is pursuing a godly young man by all appearances and
00:41:32.520 his father is a crackhead and his mother is in prison that is an important important data point
00:41:38.520 to be aware of and so i i mean like i said i don't think that's a principle but there are going to be
00:41:45.020 certain struggles that are unique to that man that might not be the case in the ideal
00:41:52.820 situation, which would be a young godly man who has been raised by godly parents who have
00:41:56.820 been members in the church their whole life, who are Christians, you know, multi-generational,
00:42:01.260 like that would be ideal.
00:42:02.520 We don't live in an ideal world.
00:42:04.040 And God redeems sinners and cleanses them from their sin and makes them new creations.
00:42:09.720 So I'm not saying discount, you know, a man like that, that had less than ideal parentage, but that is something that you must be aware of.
00:42:19.200 Yeah, we're formed by our surroundings, by our past experiences, by our family, by our culture.
00:42:25.000 And so it's important that we equip our children, our sons and our daughters with the right questions.
00:42:29.580 If we, to the degree that we can be involved, we can be asking these questions as well of another father or of the, you know, if I'm, obviously I've hoped to be involved in any young man, you know,
00:42:39.340 courting or wanting to date my daughter. So I would love to be able to sit them down, take them
00:42:42.540 out, ask them some questions, knowing what questions to ask and what questions to have to
00:42:47.520 note for your children to ask are big. Do you, do you have any questions off the top of your head?
00:42:52.640 Yeah. Like do you, do you, or have you ever looked at pornography? I think it's a huge one that a
00:42:57.200 father should probably ask first if it's, if at all possible, if not, then that question needs
00:43:02.180 to be asked by somebody. And I'm talking about from a daughter's perspective. Do you, are you
00:43:06.600 a virgin? Have you ever had sex with anybody? I would be asking those kinds of sexual purity 1.00
00:43:11.440 questions. I would be asking theological questions. Tell me what kind of church do you go? Hopefully
00:43:15.980 it's the same church, obviously, but in the ideal, but what kind of church do you go to?
00:43:19.900 How did you come to your theological convictions? Do you believe we should baptize, that Christians
00:43:24.060 should baptize their children, that the infants of believing parents should be baptized? Do you
00:43:29.400 believe that women should be pastors? I mean, like there's a whole range that sexually,
00:43:34.900 theologically, what kind of job do you have? How much do you hope to earn?
00:43:39.140 How much have you saved up right now? Do you have any debt? What are your plans for your career?
00:43:43.900 How many children do you want to have? What do you think about educating children?
00:43:48.000 Is there a proper method, principles there? And your daughter's suitor is going to be,
00:43:53.520 well, I listened to the King's Hall, so I know all the answers. Of course.
00:43:57.360 The King's Hall won't be around by then. I'm just going to let you know it's not going to be like
00:44:00.860 15 years. Let's be honest about longevity of podcasts. But yeah, I mean, there's a, there's
00:44:06.120 a question. The basic thing we're trying to do is figure out the character and the convictions of
00:44:10.880 the person in front of you as help as a father, as well as teaching our children what things to
00:44:16.760 value. Yeah. I think there are other principles that you can, uh, I guess you said it like this
00:44:23.600 in a, in a Q and a, a canary in the coal mine. Yeah. You know, there, there are a few of those
00:44:28.400 that are floating around.
00:44:29.140 There's not like one,
00:44:30.700 but there are some.
00:44:32.460 One of them is the,
00:44:33.980 you know,
00:44:34.240 what are their parents like?
00:44:35.480 The other is
00:44:36.760 there are certain sins
00:44:38.060 that men and women
00:44:39.820 are more prone to fall into.
00:44:41.300 Like you had mentioned
00:44:42.080 with a young man,
00:44:43.240 you want to know
00:44:44.040 about his sexual purity.
00:44:45.180 And you would
00:44:46.000 with a young woman,
00:44:47.140 but in a different way.
00:44:48.520 The sins that are,
00:44:50.100 I guess,
00:44:51.000 outside of the,
00:44:52.900 of sexual purity
00:44:53.880 or sexual immorality,
00:44:55.160 let's move on
00:44:55.740 to a different category.
00:44:57.200 One sin that,
00:44:58.400 a lot of men are going to be tempted to fall into. And that's more of a character thing
00:45:03.280 is to be worthless, to have a lack of ambition, to not be able to provide for your daughter.
00:45:10.900 That would be one thing that I would want to know about his character in this interview. And you
00:45:15.140 get to that with some of your questions about, well, the thing is though, talk is cheap, right?
00:45:19.500 It's cheap. You can say like, what are your career plans? Oh, I'm planning on being a musician and
00:45:23.120 I'm going to make it big. And Brian Sauve laughs. Yeah, I know how much they pay on Spotify.
00:45:30.600 Fractions of a penny. Yeah, it's less than a cent. But that's one thing that I would want to know
00:45:35.380 if I had daughters was, is this a man that has ambition? Is this a man that has vision? Is he
00:45:41.700 going to be able to take care of my daughter and my grandkids? And this is one of the dangers of
00:45:46.820 trusting in something like the courtship model to do all the heavy lifting for you,
00:45:50.000 is that one thing the people who tend towards the courtship model in on the parent level are very
00:45:55.860 strong personalities and convictional people and so what can what might happen you have to be aware
00:46:02.640 of is that they might have a like a coattail son or a little like scared mouse of a son who's had
00:46:09.660 this really strong overbearing dad who's involved in everything son never makes any decisions for
00:46:15.160 himself and so he's gonna i'm gonna get my boy married okay let's here's all the right answers
00:46:19.320 but he doesn't actually know anything and he has no experience and he's not strong and he like
00:46:23.480 i'm not saying that's guaranteed in this but you have to be aware of these ditches and you
00:46:29.240 courtship or not you need to be able to know the person that this that is the potential spouse
00:46:34.720 standing on their own two feet not just as mommy and daddy think they are yeah well in all fairness
00:46:42.120 if that's one of the ditches of the courtship model one of the ditches in the dating model
00:46:46.260 is that you have a self-centered, ambitious man
00:46:49.760 who is really good at attracting women,
00:46:53.580 who is self-absorbed
00:46:55.300 and is going to work entirely for his own glory
00:46:57.740 and will still neglect the provision of his wife
00:47:02.240 and his kids.
00:47:04.380 And so there are ditches on both sides of that.
00:47:06.640 You know, with women, 1.00
00:47:07.700 one thing I think you have to look out for 1.00
00:47:09.740 is that you don't want to also have a woman
00:47:13.460 that lacks ambition, 1.00
00:47:14.340 that is not a hard and diligent worker that would keep a house and is intelligent and is able to
00:47:20.840 educate children and to be able to exercise wisdom and discernment in the discipline and raising of
00:47:25.900 children. I mean, that's all really important. But I mean, you probably have some thoughts about
00:47:31.060 this as well because you speak to this a lot in Breithearth, but having a woman that is in a busy
00:47:37.160 body. Yeah. That is, has the virtue of chastity, not just in her physical appearance and in her
00:47:44.560 flirtatiousness, but also in her speech. Yeah. Who practices modesty in her speech. I think 1.00
00:47:51.620 that's a, that's an important one. I don't know if you have any others that would be like big
00:47:55.200 character things. Like if you were, if you were to interview the father of a woman that your,
00:48:00.780 your son is interested in yeah red meat is a staple of a healthy protein pack diet but not
00:48:07.640 all meat is created equal that's why i buy my meat from salt and strings butchery salt and

00:49:19.100 What sort of questions would you ask
00:49:20.920 that would differ from, you know,
00:49:23.040 Asking, interviewing a young man, that's...
00:49:25.180 Yeah, this is tough.
00:49:26.020 Asking the father would be tough
00:49:27.660 because you're like, that's his daughter.
00:49:30.300 I think you should be teaching your sons for sure.
00:49:35.340 On the first level, I think,
00:49:37.300 is teaching your sons to understand
00:49:40.060 what a godly woman looks like
00:49:41.980 and what a glorious woman...
00:49:43.680 Like, she is a gentle and quiet spirit.
00:49:45.400 What does that mean?
00:49:47.020 Like, sons, do you know what nagging is?
00:49:50.000 You know how, like, does mom ever do this?
00:49:51.820 And then maybe you say, like,
00:49:53.040 does mama ever, she does it all the time. And I hate it. That'd be bad. Hopefully she doesn't,
00:49:57.000 you know, I know my wife doesn't marry a woman like your mother. Yeah. I know Lexi doesn't do 1.00
00:50:02.440 this. And so I could ask my sons and, and we've had conversations like this before, but like,
00:50:07.060 does mama ever put daddy down in front of you guys at dinner? Cause sometimes we, they're at
00:50:11.880 the age now where maybe there's a fight at the table and one of them's, you know, telling his 0.97
00:50:15.740 sister, like you're, you know, you're ugly or you're whatever. And so, well, Hey, does mama 0.96
00:50:20.000 ever do that? Does daddy ever do that? And we're trying to establish for them, hopefully in our
00:50:24.900 actual persons, but a goal, like what is their Venus? What is the ideal woman? And then also
00:50:32.580 teaching them to name the sins. Like what is a naggy woman look like? Do you want to marry a 1.00
00:50:38.220 naggy woman? Get the Proverbs with them. No, the answer is no. Women, do you want to marry an angry 1.00
00:50:43.260 man who has a temper that's uncontrolled? How do you see that, right? Like getting your kids to 0.98
00:50:49.720 become adept at diagnosing or naming sins that are common to men and women is a huge part of this
00:50:55.900 because they have to have the discernment at the end of the day. You can coach them and see it
00:51:00.180 yourself and say, hey, you know, I know Susie's really beautiful and she's, you know, she flirts
00:51:05.220 with you. She seems interested in you, but I just want, you know, have you noticed how disrespectful
00:51:11.260 she is to her dad? Yeah. And how often she, you know, initiates fights with you, right? 1.00
00:51:19.720 Now, think about that.
00:51:21.500 What do you think about that?
00:51:22.980 Yeah.
00:51:23.260 You know, what about this verse?
00:51:24.200 Well, it's also going to be important to you as fathers to be wise in knowing the times.
00:51:29.620 Yeah.
00:51:29.880 Because the sins of our day are going to be, I mean, the sins of our day.
00:51:34.260 That means like a predominant number of people are falling into the sins of our day.
00:51:38.080 Yeah.
00:51:38.260 So it's important to understand the times and where the battle lines are to help identify
00:51:43.360 a lot of the sins that are going to be prominent.
00:51:45.500 Yes, absolutely.
00:51:46.520 Absolutely.
00:51:47.000 Absolutely. Let's talk a little bit more particularly about boys versus girls here and young men versus young women, because obviously we have slightly different aims for our sons versus our daughters and preparing them for marriage.
00:51:59.700 And I'll give an example and then ask your thoughts with sons, particularly starting there.
00:52:04.200 One of the things, obviously, that we're trying to train our sons to recognize, like we just said, is a godly woman. 0.95
00:52:11.380 What does that look like?
00:52:12.380 One that they're attracted to, that they can know is a virtuous woman they can entrust to raise the children with and be faithful to.
00:52:20.440 So I'm telling my kids, like, okay, as they grow up, my sons need to learn, like, they need to be protected from certain archetypal dangers in a woman.
00:52:33.060 One of them would be like a hoe, to just put it straightforwardly.
00:52:36.560 A harlot, if you wanted to Bible it up.
00:52:39.100 You know, people get so mad when you say hoe on Twitter. 1.00
00:52:41.900 But I'm like, look, harlot, whore, hoe. 1.00
00:52:44.860 Whore is worse. 1.00
00:52:45.960 It's a denigrating word for a certain type of woman that the Bible is just unblushingly repeatedly says, hey, whatever you do, son, don't go down her door, right? 0.94
00:52:55.980 So I think one of the big things we're doing is we're teaching our sons to identify the sexually immoral woman or the loose woman or the allure of the woman who is the loud woman.
00:53:08.660 She doesn't have a gentle and quiet spirit, but she does know what she has to lure, and it's her sexuality.
00:53:15.960 So that's one thing as I'm thinking of raising my sons that I'm protecting them.
00:53:20.420 What are your thoughts?
00:53:20.960 Any other things you got?
00:53:21.720 Well, you know what?
00:53:22.080 You said something.
00:53:23.100 You just kind of brushed by it that I think is actually really profound and maybe seems obvious.
00:53:29.060 But the aim of what you're aiming for in a relationship I think is really important.
00:53:36.080 Yeah.
00:53:36.320 Because I think so often โ€“ the thing I was most concerned about when I was dating is am I attracted to her?
00:53:44.780 do I get along with her? Is she a friend or whatever the, you know, the dumb measure I was 0.85
00:53:50.020 using at the time was, can I see myself being with this person for a long time? Yeah. It was all
00:53:56.080 internal selfish navel gazing, right? Yeah. And you just said, well, son, if you're going to find
00:54:03.560 a woman that can, you know, raise your children and be diligent in the house and, and all of that,
00:54:08.520 Those are all things you have to have as an aim when you're looking for a wife. 0.98
00:54:14.080 Yeah.
00:54:14.260 So it becomes easier at that point of filtering mechanism, if you will, to identify some of these character deficiencies. 0.99
00:54:21.460 Like if she is a hoe, like, well, it obviously automatically kicks out because it doesn't meet your vision for what a wife needs to be in order to accomplish your mission here. 1.00
00:54:31.780 And so she has to be able to raise children. 1.00
00:54:34.640 Yeah. 0.76
00:54:34.840 She has to be faithful and loyal, be willing to submit. 0.96
00:54:39.400 She can't be naggy.
00:54:41.020 She can't, you know, undermine her father's authority. 1.00
00:54:43.540 She can't undermine your authority. 1.00
00:54:45.080 She will teach your children to undermine your authority. 1.00
00:54:48.320 They will not listen to you. 0.96
00:54:49.400 They will rebel against you.
00:54:51.240 You know, so I think the aim is really, really important when you're filtering out spouses for your children or if you're single, you know, your future spouse.
00:55:00.460 The aim is really important.
00:55:02.020 What does a woman, what boxes would a woman, not boxes, what vision would you have for a wife? 0.99
00:55:10.400 What is the job description that she would be fit for?
00:55:14.300 Yeah, and these are things that you're teaching your son so they can soberly assess.
00:55:18.280 So they're approaching it with the heart and with the eyes and with all the, those are good things.
00:55:23.320 You should be wildly attracted to and want to, you know.
00:55:28.040 Want to what, Brian?
00:55:29.120 Want to take this woman.
00:55:30.620 To make children.
00:55:31.120 To your bedroom. 0.99
00:55:32.020 That's as your wife, obviously, duh, I want my sons to marry, you know, women they're 0.95
00:55:37.200 attracted to and, but they need to make sure they have the full range.
00:55:40.440 What do you think happens in marriage, Brian? 0.94
00:55:42.080 Notorious pervert, Brian. 0.84
00:55:43.820 Someone today, I said that Pornhub should be raised to the ground and all of its executives 0.99
00:55:51.180 executed.
00:55:52.140 And they said, and all the assets should be turned into a fund for restitution for their
00:55:57.100 child victims.
00:55:58.040 Because all the stuff about Pornhub is coming out about-
00:55:59.900 That's a good tweet.
00:56:00.420 I'll go like it.
00:56:01.140 Go like it.
00:56:01.680 When I'm done.
00:56:02.660 It's all coming out about their policies for child trafficking and just how abysmal they are.
00:56:07.980 They have one guy reviewing flagged videos, and there's 700,000 video backlog.
00:56:13.660 So there's some pervert that's just watching pornography all day.
00:56:16.440 Actually, they're- 1.00
00:56:17.340 This is disgusting. 0.94
00:56:18.280 Man, I hate this. 1.00
00:56:19.060 Let's go burn it down.
00:56:20.320 Their employees are expected to watch 2,000 videos a shift.
00:56:22.920 That was satire, by the way.
00:56:24.520 2,000 videos a shift.
00:56:26.260 No.
00:56:26.700 That's how they review them.
00:56:28.980 That's their whole job. 0.99
00:56:29.940 Those people must be seriously ugly. 0.99
00:56:32.260 Oh, yeah. 1.00
00:56:32.560 They're destroyed. 0.98
00:56:33.720 Sinning makes you ugly. 0.97
00:56:35.660 Yeah, just destroyed.
00:56:36.860 I mean.
00:56:37.400 So someone said, though, okay, Brian, what search terms did you use to find kitty stuff with on that site?
00:56:43.840 And I was like, I just blocked them.
00:56:46.760 But I can't remember where we're going with that other than that I think we should destroy.
00:56:51.740 What are the job descriptions?
00:56:52.820 Yeah, that's right.
00:56:54.080 That help.
00:56:55.960 I think that's the first level.
00:56:57.880 Yeah. 1.00
00:56:58.080 Like, what is the job description of a wife? 0.89
00:57:00.440 What is a job description for a husband?
00:57:02.220 And then there are certain qualifying, disqualifying things, like you said, like a loose woman would not help you accomplish your mission. 1.00
00:57:11.080 She flirts with everybody in the school.
00:57:13.260 She flirts with, and on the daughter side, it's like, what we're doing is we're trying to teach our sons and teach our daughters how to have an ideal that's not completely impossible and unattainable.
00:57:24.320 Right.
00:57:24.600 Like, you want a human being, you need to know how to deal with sin. 1.00
00:57:27.160 I'm only attracted to supermodels 0.99
00:57:29.460 I'm only 1.00
00:57:30.620 Every young woman who was
00:57:33.220 Unmarried I feel like early in the
00:57:35.140 Like our Calvary Chapel days there were so many
00:57:37.280 That would tell Lexi like oh man
00:57:39.280 I just how did you
00:57:41.020 I really want to marry a worship leader
00:57:42.960 Like he's got to be a musician
00:57:44.520 He's got to be really godly he's got to have enough money 0.99
00:57:46.580 And Lexi was always like that's dumb 0.98
00:57:48.880 I'm married to one 1.00
00:57:51.000 It's not that great
00:57:51.900 So true king
00:57:56.800 No, no, no. Women, because their capital is so high right now, because feminine beauty is commodified. And right now, it's especially valuable in the human capital. 1.00
00:58:10.620 In the sexual marketplace.
00:58:11.340 Yeah, in the sexual marketplace. And so women tend to have higher standards than reality, is what you're saying. 1.00
00:58:18.380 There's a calculator. I can't remember what website it is, but you can put in characteristics you're looking for in a spouse, and it will tell you what percentage of the population is eligible.
00:58:25.040 Oh, yeah. No, I've seen that before.
00:58:26.800 And, you know, women will put in, he has to be six foot tall, make $100,000 a year.
00:58:31.840 It's like less than a percent of the population of America.
00:58:35.060 By the way, it feels really good to be in the top percent.
00:58:37.680 But I'm not.
00:58:38.220 Right here.
00:58:38.700 But I'm also single.
00:58:39.560 Oh, wait, I'm not six foot.
00:58:40.620 Never mind.
00:58:41.420 Oh, you're not six foot?
00:58:41.860 I'm 5'11".
00:58:42.880 Oh, it's so over.
00:58:44.980 Kicked out.
00:58:45.620 It's never been more so over than it is right now.
00:58:47.200 But that's among single men.
00:58:48.540 Dude.
00:58:48.760 The available single men.
00:58:49.500 So true.
00:58:50.280 Okay, I'm going to move on.
00:58:51.340 Ray, help.
00:58:53.180 Okay.
00:58:54.320 We're teaching our sons what to recognize in an ideal woman, our daughters what to recognize in an ideal man, and we're teaching them how to evaluate those things themselves, what kind of questions to be asking.
00:59:07.980 I think a father's involvement at this level is really important to be asking your โ€“ let's say your daughter is getting in some kind of โ€“ she's interested in getting to that age and she's interested in marrying a particular young man or something.
00:59:21.180 hey what do you think about this what kind of job is he interested taking interest like a father
00:59:27.100 his most important role here is taking interest and initiative to being right there helping his
00:59:33.220 child clear away the emotional fog or uh you know twitter patient and ask good questions and be
00:59:42.020 sober-minded so how do you think a father gets to that point where his daughter is open enough
00:59:49.340 to actually talk to him about these things
00:59:51.800 and isn't just going to hide it
00:59:52.960 and be embarrassed or whatever.
00:59:54.800 How does a dad get to that point
00:59:56.160 to build that rapport?
00:59:57.280 He's got to be from an early age
01:00:00.320 winning his daughter.
01:00:01.620 I mean, loving her,
01:00:04.000 taking care of her,
01:00:04.800 physical affection,
01:00:06.360 praying for her,
01:00:07.280 specifically praying for her spouse,
01:00:10.660 encouraging her in the direction of chastity
01:00:13.300 and a gentle and quiet spirit,
01:00:15.500 but also strength.
01:00:17.160 Like Proverbs 31,
01:00:18.120 her arms are clothed in strength. 1.00
01:00:19.060 she's we want strong women we just don't want strong women in the way that the culture thinks 1.00
01:00:23.760 strong women which are boss babes we want strong gentle and quiet women right so he needs to be in
01:00:29.300 all those levels and then he also needs to be um just i think taking that initiative as she gets
01:00:35.640 into those years obviously i'm not quite into those years yet but taking the initiative to be
01:00:41.380 making sure that she understands that he is on her side that he is her advocate he is a shield
01:00:48.940 and his goal is very good for her i want you to be the you know may you become the mother of
01:00:54.720 ten thousands and your descendants possess the gates of your enemies he's very much for her
01:01:00.760 and and i think that helps win he's just a winner heart because she doesn't if she doesn't respect
01:01:07.280 him take care of mom like be a be a good man yeah be present yeah whereas if you have the
01:01:14.740 dour father who is always condemning and he's the no guy yeah everything's right everything's no
01:01:20.540 no no boys none of this like i don't want to hear about it yeah they'll make sure you don't hear
01:01:26.440 about it yeah it's like the whole thing where when when we we need to honor our children as a category
01:01:32.260 of discipline just as much as correcting them so we're we're winning them by we're not always the 0.98
01:01:37.240 ones coming in and saying like oh yeah that boy's an idiot because the implication is if she likes 0.99
01:01:41.920 a young man and you come in strong and you're the dad with the shotgun on his lap and you're 1.00
01:01:46.360 making all those jokes and you're actually calling her an idiot because you're saying look at this 1.00
01:01:51.120 person you're clearly attracted to or interested in what idiot would he's such a dope that what 1.00
01:01:56.500 idiot would even be you have to respect the young men too as a father otherwise you're teaching her 1.00
01:02:02.620 that all young men aren't respectable and that's a foolish thing to do she'll ultimately be 1.00
01:02:07.300 incentivized to hide things from you not trust you and kind of be have distance well no we want
01:02:14.080 to honor yeah hey that looks like a respectable young man like i'd love to i'd love to get to
01:02:18.460 know him i'd love him to show him how to clean a shotgun can he come over for dinner can i can i
01:02:26.360 hey what do you like about him what what drew you because obviously wait what oh what drew what drew
01:02:31.360 you in about that i thought you said something else and to your sons what what what do you like
01:02:35.680 about Mary Sue, you know, what, what, what, what features of hers are you, are you into? 0.96
01:02:43.120 She has, well, dad, she's just, um, she's just, I think is really flouncy. It's nice. And if we've
01:02:49.840 raised our sons and our daughters to, to maturity, we should expect them to give good answers to that
01:02:55.000 to say, you know, dad, I just really liked that. I've noticed at church that she's so good with
01:02:59.880 the kids. She's constantly going and helping with the kids. I know she nannies for that family or
01:03:04.780 she's, you know, in school and she's in, in, in school, she's, you know, she smiles a lot.
01:03:09.640 She seems really happy. And I think she has a nice singing voice. I think she's beautiful dad.
01:03:14.040 Yeah. Like those are all good answers. Yeah. And if we are, if we're doing a good job of raising
01:03:19.660 our sons and daughters, we should expect them to have good answers to those questions and not
01:03:23.440 patronize them. So a lot of this is about respecting your child as they grow into an adult
01:03:27.440 and not making them feel like they're stupid or you think they're stupid. 0.99
01:03:33.200 that's not helpful yeah my point in asking the question is because just like a lot of things 0.99
01:03:38.500 that take time to grow and to mature is that if you didn't put in the work in the early years
01:03:44.100 it's going to be much harder in the later years and so especially fathers with younger kids
01:03:49.700 yeah it's important to start building these conversations and these principles now with
01:03:54.440 the future in mind because there will be a day maybe maybe your your kids will be a little bit
01:03:59.860 like when they're teenagers, they're awkward, you know, they're teenagers are super awkward.
01:04:03.840 They're awkward and they're going to get uncomfortable. You know, young man, you know,
01:04:08.560 your son, you're going to say, Hey, you know, you know, I noticed you talking to this girl.
01:04:13.160 What are you guys talking about? And he's going to get all weird and stuff like that. I mean,
01:04:17.540 I mean, so you have to build the rapport. You have to build the, the capital in the relational
01:04:25.700 account before you start making withdrawals like that. And if you haven't done that, then you're
01:04:31.360 going to have to make up for time and show them that you are interested in their best. You want
01:04:39.020 them to succeed. And the thing is, here's what I would encourage you to do, is that if that's you,
01:04:46.720 if you haven't put in the time, maybe you're a Christian later in life, maybe you just weren't
01:04:52.580 exercising a lot of wisdom, and you have younger kids that you're trying to find a worthy spouse
01:04:57.880 for, and you haven't built that capital in, I would say continue to try to show them that you
01:05:05.640 have their best interests in mind, love them well, and even just encourage them in their awkwardness
01:05:12.300 a little bit. And just ignore it. Don't take it personally, because I guarantee you, if you do
01:05:17.100 that, there will be a day where they will thank you for doing that. Yeah, absolutely. Even if they
01:05:21.620 don't seem to appreciate it in the moment. Yeah. Yeah, that's great. And it's all about just,
01:05:27.200 it's the greatest commandment, love your neighbor, applied to this very particular
01:05:31.300 human relationship of fatherhood. How would you want to be treated by your dad? Well,
01:05:36.920 you'd want him to take interest with you in what interests you and help shape and guide that
01:05:42.240 interest towards righteousness. So a lot of this, this is the center of the discussion,
01:05:47.300 I think, where we need to move on for time. But that's the center of the discussion
01:05:50.680 in this whole process is it's not don't put your trust in horses or chariots don't put it in
01:05:55.400 courtship model versus dating model it's in the get the principles right read the situation you're
01:06:02.060 in and win your children and aim to win them to a wise and glorious vision of a godly spouse
01:06:09.980 a husband or a wife the last thing i wanted to talk about though in this episode dan was
01:06:14.380 some of the well where does this fruit grow kind of conversation because a lot of people
01:06:20.420 will find themselves in situations where there are no or very few like-minded Christian families
01:06:26.920 in their vicinity with any kind of marriageable age children for their children. One of the things
01:06:32.840 that I think we need to talk about is the role that location and community plays in this and
01:06:38.860 how people, a lot of people listening are going to have very young children and how they can be
01:06:43.020 thinking now about setting their family up to have a good chance at high quality Christian
01:06:51.140 spouses being even available to them at that time. So what are some of the factors that,
01:06:57.300 first of all, do you agree that that's an important part of this conversation? And then
01:07:00.280 what kind of factors do you think play in and what kind of things do families need to be thinking
01:07:05.320 through now in terms of where this fruit grows? Yeah, I will say it is a very important
01:07:13.300 consideration when you're looking at where you live. And the thing is, there's a lot more going
01:07:19.860 on as far as risk to your family. If there's not a good church community nearby, let's just say for
01:07:28.300 a second, there are a few different scenarios. Let's say you're in an area where you're somewhat
01:07:32.680 isolated and there's not a lot of like-minded Christians around. So there might be marriageable
01:07:37.800 aged children, but they're not like-minded. That's a dangerous spot to be in because automatically
01:07:44.920 through your filters, that's going to be problematic. And the other problem is that
01:07:50.160 your kids are still going to want to get married. And the selection that you're giving them is
01:07:55.120 generally bad. Yeah. And that desire is very strong. It is very strong. So they were very
01:07:59.720 likely to settle. Yes. Yes, that's
01:08:01.740 right. So you are forcing them to leave
01:08:03.640 in order to find an
01:08:05.760 ideal spouse.
01:08:07.460 Let's say that you're in an area with a decent
01:08:09.800 church that's
01:08:12.060 like-minded, but say
01:08:13.880 you have younger kids and all of the kids
01:08:15.820 are older. And so the prospects
01:08:17.680 aren't looking very good. I think there
01:08:19.700 are certain things that you can do in that situation.
01:08:21.680 I wouldn't recommend leaving necessarily.
01:08:23.840 That could be an option, but
01:08:25.700 there are other avenues that you
01:08:27.740 can explore. I know that
01:08:29.720 There are a few families that we've talked to at different conferences, and that's one of the aims of the conferences is networking across the country and making connections with men that they trust and then mining their congregations for high-quality families and spouses for their kids.
01:08:47.900 And I think that networking can be really powerful with that.
01:08:51.060 Now, courting or dating or whatever becomes really challenging because it's now at a distance.
01:08:56.160 Yeah.
01:08:56.520 Yeah. And so that's obviously a less than ideal situation, but it is difficult to recommend like,
01:09:04.260 oh, you should definitely move then if you're at a good church, you know, in a region. I don't
01:09:08.660 know what you would think about that situation. Yeah. I do think that, you know, people don't
01:09:12.980 get this. One of the reasons I go to conferences at all is because of this, even though my kids
01:09:16.920 are 10 and under, Lexi and I have talked a lot about this, is that we would like to identify now
01:09:21.920 strategic relationships with families and churches and communities that will be fruitful for our
01:09:27.720 family long-term, up to and including for marriage connections. And we do that even though I think
01:09:35.320 we have a great community here, and there's a lot of kids that are our kids' age, and they're
01:09:39.860 going to grow up in the school, and it's going to be, like, Lord willing, it'll be wonderful.
01:09:43.460 But we try to keep and maintain and build new relationships in these places with that in mind.
01:09:49.900 So if you're in a less than ideal situation, as a father, take initiative to try and help.
01:09:58.100 Identify the communities where they're like-minded and you can inquire.
01:10:02.720 Go ask a pastor.
01:10:04.340 Is there anybody in your church that's this age range that is looking for marriage that you as a pastor would recommend for some kind of courtship or anything like that?
01:10:13.300 That sounds really weird.
01:10:14.580 It's not really weird at all.
01:10:15.860 It's not.
01:10:16.300 It's historically normal.
01:10:17.460 Actually, it's really wise.
01:10:18.440 Yeah, it's just you being, take initiative as a father and don't put it all, don't be like, yeah, daughter, here, go to college, have fun. Man, do you know what happens to women in the colleges? They just are mattresses, a lot of them. Like, it's horrible. They just become passed around, manipulated by guys who are really good at picking up women. And you're not there. Take initiative. Like, go out and try to find those communities, go to the conferences, do the thing.
01:10:44.060 And a lot of it's the value of these sort of events are actually around the people.
01:10:49.120 They're not, I don't really care a lot.
01:10:50.900 Most of the time, about 90% of the talks at a conference, I want to know who's there.
01:10:55.860 Wow, that was a radical statement that I definitely agree with.
01:11:00.540 I think we both agree.
01:11:02.300 Yeah, I mean, also, it's an opportunity to win glory and respect in the eyes of your son or daughter.
01:11:08.500 Yeah.
01:11:08.720 Saying, I will do this for you because I care this much about your future.
01:11:14.260 Yeah.
01:11:14.700 And your success.
01:11:15.600 Absolutely.
01:11:15.840 And you're, I mean, you're caring about your generations.
01:11:18.360 You're loving yourself in a way.
01:11:20.400 And then the last scenario would be if you're in an area that doesn't have like-minded Christians and there are no prospects whatsoever.
01:11:30.120 That's a dangerous spot for your family to be.
01:11:32.520 Very risky.
01:11:33.220 Period.
01:11:33.720 Yeah.
01:11:34.260 Not just for marriage.
01:11:35.640 Yeah.
01:11:35.940 But for all of life.
01:11:37.440 A lot of people find themselves in this because of homesteading fantasies where they find a place where 100 acres is really cheap and they say we're going to homestead.
01:11:46.160 I'm not alone in saying โ€“ you can talk to a guy like John Moody who knows his way around homesteading.
01:11:50.900 I mean he's working with Joel Salatin and he's involved in this really into productive Christian household stuff.
01:11:56.720 Great, wise guy.
01:11:57.560 You should definitely follow him.
01:11:58.500 But he'll say to most people, don't go buy land way out in the rural boonies, especially if you have young kids.
01:12:04.900 Don't do it because who are they going to marry?
01:12:07.140 Who are they going to be around?
01:12:08.200 Who's going to be your church family?
01:12:10.000 People are one of the most important resource for you to tap into economically, vocationally,
01:12:15.420 relationally, ecclesially.
01:12:16.840 In all of these different facets of life, people are the thing. 0.97
01:12:21.300 So I'm not saying if you're rural that you're dumb or something like that, but you're going
01:12:25.320 to have obstacles to overcome. 0.88
01:12:27.200 So don't, I would argue, I would urge you not to put yourself in that situation out
01:12:32.940 of a fantasy of the glory of the remote farm life, unless you have very compelling social
01:12:40.260 supports in the region you're looking at that you can be confident in, because it's going to be
01:12:46.200 tough for your kids. And I would honestly, I would encourage people with young kids who are in these
01:12:52.780 early years, it seems far away, guys, it's not far away at all. It will be so quick before your
01:12:59.060 kids are teens. I mean, my kids, I already have a 10 year old. I feel like I just started having
01:13:03.780 kids. And so I would, I would highly encourage people to consider relocating if that's what it
01:13:11.040 takes to find Christian community that's like-minded and culturally potent. If, if, if there
01:13:19.440 are many reasons, but this is a high one on my list. Yeah. And I, and I guarantee you, as you
01:13:23.800 look through the obstacles uh that would prevent you from moving that men have made greater
01:13:29.700 sacrifices for much less in in 15 years if your daughter marries an unbeliever what amount of
01:13:36.620 money would you pay to have a do-over to go back and move to a better community and see that
01:13:44.040 more but just better options yeah i guarantee you it would be everything like half a million bucks
01:13:50.400 your house, like your house, oh, it's expensive to, well, there are places, I'm not saying move
01:13:55.200 to Ogden necessarily or anything like that, but I'm saying think, think this through.
01:13:58.820 This is one of the most important aspects of your fatherly duty is to the best of your ability
01:14:05.460 within reason, providing a context where they're likely to be able to fulfill the normal vocations
01:14:11.880 of human life well. So any last, any last thoughts here? I know there's tons more we could say.
01:14:17.120 Yeah, I mean, we've already gone on for a very, very long time, and I don't think we've really scratched the surface.
01:14:23.520 If you have any other questions, you can send them to us at thekingshallatprotonmail.com, or you can hit us up on Twitter.
01:14:31.700 Yeah, find us there.
01:14:32.860 Tell us if you want a part two on this, and if we get enough interest, we'll do a part two with Eric, too.
01:14:37.520 But I think this is a huge topic.
01:14:39.200 We've talked about it on Breithearth as well, Field Guide for Finding a Spouse and things like that.
01:14:42.680 But thanks for listening, guys.
01:14:44.140 Fest in Alente.
01:14:44.840 Make haste slowly.
01:14:45.600 remember that the Lord is forming His people, not just over the five-minute increments, but
01:14:51.000 He's forming His people over generations. So make your generational progress that the Lord has put
01:14:56.900 in front of you, and then send your kids out downstream with faith in the Lord. And trust
01:15:02.880 that God will use them and grow them and push faith further downstream in history. But thanks
01:15:07.820 for listening. We'll catch you next time on The King's Hall.
