00:02:09.820 and now uses the name Stacey Marie Lawton, was charged in federal court with sexually exploiting children.

00:02:15.540 Authorities say that Lawton conspired with an accomplice who worked at a daycare to photograph

00:02:20.160 the genitals of young children in a private bathroom.

00:02:23.560 Lawton also discussed his interest in raping a three-year-old.

00:02:26.740 There are text messages that prove all of this, and we'll get back to that in a moment.

00:02:31.520 For the most part, the media would prefer that that's all you heard about this story if you

00:02:37.820 They want you to think that out of the blue, a state lawmaker committed horrible crimes,

00:02:46.560 But what you're not supposed to talk about, and what everyone knows is true, is that Stacey

00:02:50.600 Lawton didn't rise to power despite being a sexual deviant.

00:03:04.820 he decided to run for state office in New Hampshire anyway.

00:03:13.540 Even profoundly mediocre candidates could win, Lawton realized, as long as they claimed to

00:03:50.040 Whether you're impressed or not, that pitch thrilled Democratic Party voters in New Hampshire.

00:03:54.280 And soon Lawton became the first self-identifying trans lawmaker elected in the United States.

00:04:02.520 Media outlets and top officials in the Democratic Party celebrated Lawton's election.

00:04:06.500 The Huffington Post, for example, praised Lawton for making history.

00:04:10.320 The chair of New Hampshire's Democratic Party, Ray Buckley, promised Lawton would bring unique

00:04:14.840 experience and perspective to the office.

00:04:18.000 But just a few days before he was set to take office, Lawton resigned.

00:04:22.580 Because it turned out that he had hidden his criminal record from voters, and that because

00:04:26.280 of his criminal record and the fact that he hadn't paid restitution, he was unable

00:04:30.080 to serve in office.

00:04:31.380 It was not legal for him to serve.

00:04:33.400 He spoke about his resignation briefly in an interview with a local news station at the

00:04:36.740 time, blaming it on his past, quote, turmoil.

00:04:40.560 Now, here are the details about Lawton's past turmoil.

00:04:45.320 In 2002 and 2003, Lawton was arrested for charges like criminal mischief and simple assault.

00:04:50.740 In 2006, Lawton faked a medical emergency in order to get a free ride in an ambulance.

00:04:55.020 And that same year, Lawton slashed the tires of a resident in his apartment building.

00:04:59.720 Then in 2007, Lawton opened a credit card in someone else's name and began buying merchandise

00:05:04.640 with it.

00:05:05.140 So up to this point, while all these crimes were being committed, Lawton's name was Barry

00:05:10.580 Charles Lawton Jr.

00:05:12.480 He was not pretending to be a woman yet, as far as anyone knows.

00:05:16.060 But in 2010, when he was in his mid-20s, Barry decided on a new identity.

00:05:20.420 He began calling himself Stacey Lawton.

00:05:23.000 He formally changed his name in court documents, which helped him hide his criminal record from

00:05:28.760 reporters.

00:05:29.300 Because in the past, you know, a political candidate running under a new name that he

00:05:33.940 only recently assumed would raise all kinds of questions.

00:05:38.780 But because he was a man assuming a woman's name, nobody was allowed to ask any of those

00:05:44.240 And so nobody went back and looked and said, well, here's Stacey Lawton.

00:05:57.160 Now, what Lawton did not do is make any real attempt to pass as a woman, even after he took

00:06:12.860 After Lawton resigned his seat in 2012 because of his criminal history, he continued to break the

00:06:19.540 In 2015, for example, he called in a bomb threat against a hospital.

00:06:24.320 Now, at the time, the media excused this bomb threat as a symptom of Lawton's mental illness.

00:06:51.480 One problem was that I was not being properly treated.

00:06:54.040 I was untreated for nearly two years.

00:06:58.540 Untreated, bipolar, for two years, you can get really, really goofy, really, really crazy

00:07:02.280 and do all kinds of impulsive, intense, over-the-top things.

00:07:12.860 he went down to San Diego in a manic state and threw his clothes off and did all kinds

00:07:47.440 And now he's threatening to blow up a hospital.

00:07:49.680 But according to Dr. Drew and his panelists, Lawton is the victim.

00:07:53.940 Now, also remember, keep this in mind, that Stacey Lawton, otherwise known as Barry Lawton,

00:08:00.520 Lawton called in a bomb threat and blamed his mental illness in that he was saying he's so mentally ill,

00:08:06.640 he can't stop himself from calling in bomb threats.

00:08:11.440 So keep that in mind as we continue along.

00:08:15.360 Shortly afterwards, maybe because he realized he could do absolutely no wrong, Lawton decided to run once again for a seat in the New Hampshire legislature.

00:08:24.820 After all those crimes and after saying, I'm mentally ill, I'm so mentally ill that I can't stop myself from threatening to blow up hospitals,

00:08:31.240 hey, vote for me.

00:08:33.960 This was in 2020.

00:08:35.540 And of course, Democrats in New Hampshire lined up to support him.

00:08:39.060 Manny Espitea, a two-term New Hampshire representative, endorsed Lawton in a Facebook post,

00:08:43.460 calling it one of the most consequential elections of our lifetime and saying that people should vote for the convicted fraudster and hospital bomb threat maker.

00:08:52.060 The state Democratic Party distributed flyers urging voters to support Lawton.

00:08:56.280 And he ultimately won the seat.

00:08:57.880 Two years later, in 2022, Lawton won re-election with the help of National Democrats this time,

00:09:03.720 including Eric Swalwell and Beto O'Rourke, who campaigned for him.

00:09:06.820 They even took photographs with him, which you can see here.

00:09:10.280 Now, this time around, history repeated itself.

00:09:13.140 Lawton resigned before taking office because, once again, it emerged that Democrats had hidden Lawton's past criminal history from voters.

00:09:20.600 According to Yahoo News, it turns out that in September, just before the election, Lawton was arrested for stalking.

00:09:26.080 So these are new crimes now.

00:09:27.380 We've got all those old crimes.

00:09:29.420 He was elected anyway, then re-elected.

00:09:32.640 This time it's stalking.

00:09:34.320 And the year before that, he was arrested for sending false emergency messages to 911.

00:09:38.880 The key point is that none of this criminal behavior was disqualifying to New Hampshire Democrats

00:09:43.480 until Lawton was arrested once again for stalking after the election and then missed his swear-in ceremony.

00:09:50.080 Once that happened and the media coverage was impossible to ignore, Democrats called on Lawton to resign, and he did.

00:09:57.240 Now, Lawton has not been shamed by any of this, and not that you would expect him to be.

00:14:06.360 That accomplice was his, I suppose, girlfriend at the time, a woman named Lindsay Groves, who worked at a local daycare.

00:14:13.640 According to a federal indictment, Lawton would ask Groves to take children to a private bathroom at the daycare,

00:14:19.960 have them lift their clothes over their faces, and then photograph their genitals.

00:14:26.460 And then he would instruct Groves to send those pictures to him.

00:14:30.060 In some cases, Lawton would instruct Groves also to physically molest the children, to touch their genitals.

00:14:37.900 In one text message, one of many like it, Lawton talks about his desire to rape a particular child.

00:14:43.600 In response, Groves writes, she's not even three yet.

00:14:47.380 And Lawton replies, yeah, I know.

00:14:49.960 Now, I had initially planned to read some of the documentation that prosecutors have compiled,

00:14:56.440 proving that Lawton is a depraved child predator, the conversations he had with Groves, the text messages, and so on.

00:15:02.400 But after reading an article with some of these details laid out, I find it far too disturbing and upsetting to repeat.

00:15:08.360 The details are all there in the affidavit if you want to see for yourself.

00:15:12.280 Just suffice it to say that this man is a true monster.
