00:48:26.180 So the article describes this phenomenon

00:50:58.840 definitely cheaper than renting without

00:51:05.600 phenomenon, Gen Z, they're renting 1.00

00:51:09.220 everything, and the explanation is

00:51:11.440 always, oh, well, it's because the

00:51:12.580 economy, it's because they can't

00:51:13.480 afford.

00:51:15.020 Well, yeah, but you're doing something

00:51:16.280 that's more expensive.

00:51:18.580 So that doesn't make any sense.

00:51:20.460 What's actually happening is that

00:51:23.580 people are spending more, they're

00:51:30.360 actually spending more with the excuse

00:51:32.080 of a bad economy, low income, all that

00:51:34.200 sort of thing.

00:51:36.200 What's happening is people are spending

00:51:37.760 more on these kinds of things.

00:51:41.220 And they're doing it so they can get the

00:51:43.280 designer outfit and post a picture on

00:51:45.340 Instagram.

00:51:46.200 That's what the point of this really is.

00:51:47.700 They rent the, I mean, the article

00:51:48.860 talked about, they rent the home decor and

00:51:50.480 the glassware and then post a picture of

00:51:52.340 the table spread for Instagram, which is

00:51:55.560 basically the whole point.

00:51:57.780 And it's much, much more expensive than

00:51:59.760 just buying these items and using them

00:52:02.420 thousands of times, as again, almost all

00:52:05.060 people have always done since forever.

00:52:08.820 But the effect is this, and here's why,

00:52:10.740 this is why I hate this.

00:52:13.760 Well, three reasons.

00:52:15.280 First of all, this is consumerism,

00:52:18.640 materialism, wastefulness, cloaked as being

00:52:23.240 thrifty and living affordably.

00:52:25.800 And it's really the opposite of that.

00:52:27.240 And there's a lot of this kind of thing

00:52:28.260 going around.

00:52:30.520 This is supposed to be, oh, well, you're

00:52:31.880 renting it, so it's cheaper.

00:52:33.620 I'm being wiser with my money.

00:52:37.300 No, this is not that.

00:52:39.260 This is the opposite.

00:52:41.060 And people think that just because they

00:52:42.580 don't own anything, they don't buy anything,

00:52:44.340 they only rent, that they're somehow living

00:52:45.900 a more humble and affordable lifestyle.

00:52:47.980 But they aren't at all.

00:52:50.620 And the second problem is that it's

00:52:51.600 performative.

00:52:52.440 You know, this is life as performance.

00:52:55.460 It's about getting things so you can post

00:52:57.240 about on social media.

00:52:58.780 And that's not real.

00:53:00.160 That's not authentic.

00:53:01.020 You cannot be a happy or well-rounded or

00:53:03.180 good or interesting person if you're not

00:53:05.980 authentic.

00:53:06.980 And I don't mean authentic in a kind of

00:53:09.380 shallow, self-help, mumbo-jumbo sort of

00:53:11.600 way.

00:53:11.840 I mean, authentic as in honest, just

00:53:15.080 living a real honest life, which this

00:53:17.340 isn't.

00:53:17.680 And third, most importantly, it's very

00:53:20.480 bad to have so many people who own

00:53:23.320 nothing.

00:53:25.000 And that's where we are.

00:53:26.120 I mean, think about it.

00:53:27.100 Think about the life of someone who

00:53:28.660 subscribes to one of these clothing

00:53:30.680 rental services.

00:53:31.620 And I don't know how many people do.

00:53:33.940 But think about their life.

00:53:37.760 We can assume they don't own the home

00:53:39.300 they live in, right?

00:53:40.940 They don't own their land.

00:53:41.700 They probably live in an apartment.

00:53:43.080 They don't own their car.

00:53:45.140 They don't own the clothes on their

00:53:47.700 Many of them don't own their furniture,

00:53:49.460 their utensils.

00:53:50.300 They have a lot of stuff.

00:53:52.800 Okay, that's the point.

00:53:53.640 They possess a great many things,

00:53:56.720 but they don't own any of it.

00:53:59.360 So they have a materialistic lifestyle

00:54:01.180 without the ownership that used to

00:54:03.720 come with that.

00:54:04.260 So it's really the worst of all

00:54:05.920 worlds to be surrounded with crap,

00:54:08.440 with stuff, to be incredibly

00:54:10.580 materialistic, but to not own any of

00:54:13.380 it.

00:54:14.280 It's really the worst combination for a

00:54:16.620 person.

00:54:18.000 Because if you own very little, but

00:54:19.860 also possess very little, well, then

00:54:21.700 at least you reap the spiritual

00:54:23.140 rewards of, you know, an austere,

00:54:27.460 humble, minimalist life.

00:54:29.980 And on the other hand, if you have a

00:54:32.480 lot of stuff, that can be very

00:54:35.520 materialistic.

00:54:36.200 But if you own it, well, then there

00:54:37.660 are rewards that come with owning

00:54:39.720 things.

00:54:40.160 Like, this is mine.

00:54:42.660 This is my thing, right?

00:54:45.260 And depending on what it is, this is

00:54:46.860 something I can pass down to my

00:54:52.060 And there are real rewards that come

00:54:55.900 This is the worst of all worlds.

00:54:59.160 disconnect between Gen Z and

00:55:01.320 boomers, because they're always 1.00

00:55:02.760 locked in this debate, this

00:55:04.240 contest, where Gen Z says that,

00:55:08.080 well, they have it so much worse

00:55:09.040 than the boomers did. 0.55

00:55:10.620 And, you know, and then boomers say,

00:55:12.060 oh, well, you ungrateful brats, you 1.00

00:55:13.680 have the easiest lives anyone's ever

00:55:15.260 lived, you don't know how good you

00:55:17.020 have it.

00:55:17.920 And it goes back and forth.

00:55:20.000 And the truth is that it's kind of a

00:55:22.160 third option, which is this, that

00:55:25.380 Gen Z are correct, that they have to 1.00

00:55:27.680 deal with things that no other

00:55:29.280 generation of Americans really had to 0.96

00:55:31.200 deal with, at least not to this

00:55:32.080 extent.

00:55:33.640 A country overrun by third world 1.00

00:55:37.120 invaders, they have to compete

00:55:38.860 against the entire world.

00:55:41.380 It's worse now than it's ever been, so

00:55:43.320 no one has had to deal with that at

00:55:44.800 this level.

00:55:46.940 They're in massive debt from getting

00:55:48.900 worthless college degrees that they

00:55:51.680 were, you know, they were cajoled and

00:55:55.580 coerced into getting, and everything is

00:55:58.640 way more expensive than it should be.

00:56:01.220 The quality of everything has gone

00:56:02.740 down.

00:56:04.800 Even when it comes to something like

00:56:05.780 restaurant food, the quality, it's like

00:56:17.000 And in this, in this war between boomers 0.66

00:56:22.540 know, I'm millennial, so we, we kind

00:56:23.640 of, I don't know, we're sort of in the

00:56:25.260 middle of it, but, um, this is something

00:56:28.600 that I think often the boomers are not

00:56:30.280 willing to acknowledge all those points.

00:56:34.260 However, it's also true that boomers 0.97

00:56:37.520 lived much humbler lives for the most

00:56:40.960 part when they were the age that

00:56:43.480 zoomers are now they had less stuff 1.00

00:56:47.380 and a lot less, you know, we talk about

00:56:50.860 how they, well, they could, they could

00:56:52.560 buy homes, you know, boomers, when they 1.00

00:56:54.580 were 24 years old, just got married,

00:56:56.400 they could go buy a home.

00:56:57.820 And, and that's a lot of them could.

00:56:59.560 And that is true.

00:57:00.460 They were not big home.

00:57:01.420 They were not living in palaces though.

00:57:03.680 They were, they were living in like 0.70

00:57:44.660 And then zoomers say, yeah, but you 1.00

00:57:46.080 owned a house and you had a car that

00:57:47.300 was paid off and you could buy a

00:57:53.240 And then boomers say, yeah, well, you 0.80

00:57:54.840 kids have TVs and video games and

00:57:56.600 phones and subscription services and,

00:57:58.660 and, and, and way more luxury and

00:58:00.440 material possessions than we ever had.

00:58:03.700 And the truth is like, they're both

00:58:06.380 right, which is the worst option.

00:58:10.200 Actually, actually, I'd rather it be

00:58:12.300 door number one or two, but it's kind

00:58:15.260 of door number three.

00:58:16.560 It's the, uh, it's, it's the, uh, the

00:58:20.000 worst of all worlds really where we're,

00:58:23.600 uh, it, it, the economy is in bad

00:58:27.460 shape.

00:58:27.940 People are broke, but it's also a very

00:58:30.960 materialistic culture and people have

00:58:34.100 many more things than they need and all

00:58:35.600 this kind of thing.
